Yield To Pedestrians

Dear Editor,

If you have ever tried to enter Highway 100 from any city street in New Haven at 6:45 a.m. you will know how frustrating it can be.

This is the same for 2:45 p.m., 5 p.m. and other high traffic times. This is the way it is and all we can do is deal with it and just leave for our destination about 5 minutes earlier.

My biggest concern with this, however, is when entering the highway from Douglas Street. At this intersection is a pedestrian crosswalk. I watch kids walking to and from school, runners, and bikers sit at the crosswalk and wait to cross.

Many times, they dart out trying to beat traffic in order to get across the highway. This is sad that these pedestrians have to resort to this.

Morning after morning I sit waiting to head east onto Highway 100 and see this happen way too often!

My purpose in writing this is to inform anyone and everyone that it is a Missouri State Law to yield to pedestrians!

When you see someone waiting to cross or approaching a pedestrian crosswalk YOU MUST STOP and YIELD TO THE PEDESTRIANS.

This particular intersection has a flashing light, painted walkway on the highway, and signs that tell vehicles where to stop. No excuses!

The pedestrian bridge slated for construction in 2019 will not come soon enough for the citizens in our community!

Respectfully,

Kerri Otten
