Local 4-H Youth Takes Part In 2018 Missouri State Fair

On August 9, 2018, Megan Hoerstkamp of New Haven took part in the 2018 Missouri State Fair demonstrating the five retail pork cuts.

She was one of 300 youth selected to give a demonstration in the 4-H Building at the Missouri State Fair. Missouri 4-H members compete at county events in order to qualify for the State Fair 4-H Building Demonstrations.

Megan learned about swine through her 4-H Leader, Peter Otten and used the New Haven 4-H Club’s Puzzle Pig to help demonstrate. She learned about cutting the hog from her Grandpa David Hoerstkamp who is a butcher.

Demonstrations are a great way of sharing what the youth has learned in 4-H projects focused on science and technology, healthy living or citizenship. Preparing for demonstrations helps 4-H youth develop research, organizational and communication skills. Presenting a demonstration in front of a group helps 4-H youth build poise, confidence and public speaking skills.

Megan received a 3rd Place trophy at the State Fair.
