New Haven Police Department Audit Completed
On January 31, 2024, New Haven Police Chief John Hallquist submitted his resignation, stating that “circumstances surrounding the department, and the information I have discovered that were unknown to me prior to my appointment, have brought me to this decision.”
In a special meeting on February 2, 2024, the New Haven Board of Alderpeople (BOA) voted to dissolve the New Haven Police Department. The BOA then entered into a contract with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department to provide law enforcement services within the New Haven City limits for the next six months while an audit of the New Haven Police Department was conducted.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department released the findings of their audit on Thursday, May 2, 2024. The audit covered three areas of concern raised by then New Haven Police Chief Hallquist:
1.) A missing handgun from the evidence box;
2.) two missing handguns from the evidence room; and
3.) A missing folder from a desk drawer.
The audit conclusion can be found in the May 8, 2024 edition of your New Haven Independent News!
Additionally, the Franklin County Sheriff's Department will be at the next regular BOA meeting scheduled for May 13, 2024. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the New Haven American Legion Post 366, 9494 Hwy 100.
