Paddle Stop Is A Major Force In The MR 340 Race
“SUP Y’all” is painted on the entrance door to New Haven Paddle Stop, and might raise a question in a visitor’s mind as to what this greeting may mean. It became apparent this past week with the Missouri American Water MR 340 race on the Missouri River. Starting in Kansas City and finishing in St. Charles, competitors are only given 85 hours to complete this endurance course with checkpoints all along the way.
SUP is an acronym for “Stand Up Paddleboard” and Paddle Stop owner Shane Camden custom-made several boards for race competitors. Most notable is Lauren Rodriquez, who commissioned Camden earlier this year to build a paddleboard which took her to first place in the solo women’s SUP category.
Camden also had several other clients who paddled their SUPs the entire 340 miles to finish in St. Charles after 2 to 3 days of paddling. The entire journey is not spent standing and paddling, but also sitting on a cooler and paddling in a more relaxed fashion between various checkpoints at multiple cities along the Missouri River. SUPs are one category of several in the race.
