Proposition: New Haven Ambulance District

You may have been seeing signs for the New Haven Ambulance district asking for a tax increase. Residents may be thinking, “Why would I want my taxes to increase during an inflation?” The ambulance district has been in need of upgrades for some time and would like the citizens’ approval for a new facility and equipment.

The ambulance district has been in their building for approximately fifty years and has been inside a building that was designed for retail space and not emergency equipment. The district hasn’t purchased a new cot since 2009. Emergency equipment is always advancing and the newest equipment is taller and longer. The ambulances can barely fit inside the doors due to height restrictions. The ambulance district can provide an enhanced working environment and living quarters for their employees. The rooms right now are very small and can barely fit four twin sized beds.

Here are the facts. In 2023, the ambulance district was awarded a $1,050,000 Federal ARPA grant for the construction of a new headquarters. This will allow competitive wages to retain and attract experienced emergency services employees, so they can assist in increased call volumes. This grant only gives the New Haven ambulance district half the money that they would need. The cost of an ambulance has increased substantially over the years. The price has doubled from $150,000 to $300,000 in just six years, and if you add that on the cost of the other lifesaving equipment, the prices have substantially increased.
