Rose Family Honors Family Grave Sites In New Haven
Besides the usual Memorial Day ceremonies, there is a local tradition by the Rose family to place flags on the graves of their relatives in New Haven’s Nortmann Ccemetery. Charlie Rose, his wife Kathy, and his nephew Lue came to New Haven from their home in Webster Groves to continue the decades’ long tradition of placing flags on the Rose family’s grave sites.
The African-American part of Nortmann’s cemetery is on the western edge of the grounds and includes many veterans, going back as far as David Smith’s great-grandfather who fought for the Union in the Civil War.
After the placing of the flags, the family had a picnic lunch in the City Park and reminisced about old times in New Haven.
