School Moves Start Of Band To Sixth Grade

Sixth grade is now the starting point for New Haven Schools students to enroll in band classes.

The issue was discussed at the April school board meeting and the change given final approval at the July meeting with the adoption of the new NHES handbook. Only a few districts in the region offer fifth grade band.

To offset losing the fifth grade year, the number of minutes per week of band instruction till be increased accordingly to the point where an incoming seventh grader would have a similar number of hours had he or she started band in fifth grade.
