Schools Stay Prepared With Intruder Class
New Haven Schools faculty and staff received a refresher course on how to handle active shooter situations last week from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
School personnel were given the initial intruder training—a four-hour presentation—last year. The sheriff’s office provides the training at schools throughout the county on a regular basis.
New Haven uses the standard protocol developed after a shooting incident in Colorado a few years ago.
“It’s just a standard response for law enforcement and school districts to be on the same page for active shooter events,” said the training officer, Lt. Michael Richardson, also a member of the county’s SWAT team.
