Soggy Youth Fair Brought Smiles And Fond Memories
Lighting was crackling across the sky during the New Haven Youth Fair’s Cornhole Tournament and the crowning of the Fair Queen last Friday night. Caroline Otten was crowned and honored as both Queen and Miss Congeniality. Recent New Haven High graduate Sheny Delgado was first runner-up, and second runner-up was the lovely McKenzie Pecaut.
While the ladies were celebrating, rain seemed imminent leading up to the Pig Scramble, but, fortunately, the hundreds of people who came out were spared a soggy event. The Pig Scramble has been a tradition for generations and many parents once ran through the mud and slop to catch a pig and drag it back to the gate just like their kids were presently doing. There were age categories from 4 year olds up to 18 and over. Part of the appeal is the competitive nature of wrestling the pig back to the gate without anybody else stealing the prize on the way. As a badge of honor, every pig scramble entrant is covered head to toe in mud. Most of the kids know what to expect and dive headlong after the fleeing swine.
