Hunting Easter Eggs Proves To Be Serious Business

How do you handle a couple hundred anxious parents and kids competing in a tense battle to collect the most Easter Eggs? John Berger wasn’t worried. He’s been doing this for years. First, you work with a good team of fellow dedicated New Haven Lion Club members, Second, prepare the 90 dozens eggs by filling them with chocolate candy. Third, prepare 3 large designated spots for distributing the eggs for 2-3 year olds, 4-5 year olds, and 6-7 year olds. Four, pray for good weather.

It all went perfectly for the Lions at this year’s Egg Hunt. Around 200 parents and kids put on their game faces and stepped up to the line, ready to pounce on eggs when the whistle blew. The first round was for the 2-3 year olds, and it was somewhat amusing to see confused toddlers being coached by their parents and trying to make sense of what they were doing. The 4-5 year olds definitely had a concept of collecting and were more aggressive and fast in their egg-hunting techniques. The 6-7 year olds, however, were like shoppers on Black Friday waiting for the store doors to open. These experienced young ones operated with practiced efficiency and gathered more than many of their fellow hunters.

There were also a silver and gold egg in each age category, and the finders of those special eggs were awarded big chocolate bunnies. The winners are: 2-3 year olds Callie Groppe and Hank Laune, 4-5 year olds Samuel Lowe and Maylah Havelka, and 6-7 year olds Millie and Mavis Yarborough. Special gratitude to Seitters Market for donating the eggs and candy and to John and his wife for loading the eggs with said candy.

All in all, there were smiles all around for the fun experience put on by the Lions Club of New Haven on a beautiful Easter Sunday morning.
