2023 Recap: Volleyball Digs Up District Title

New Haven crowned themselves the Class 1 District 5 Champions in 2023, their third title in four seasons. The Shamrocks finished the year with an 18-12-2 record. Jaime Hoener head-coached the team, while Brooklyn Covington and Emma Engelbrecht assisted.

Seniors Aubri Meyer, Liz Luecke and Samantha Mendenhall gave it all in their last dance on the court.

Meyer led the Shamrocks with 617 attacks and 273 kills. In the 89 sets she played, Meyer racked up 45 blocks, 32 digs, 27 aces and an assist. She was named to the all-state and academic all-state volleyball squads and the all-district and all-conference teams.

Luecke had a team-high 352 scoring assists. She also tallied 354 attacks, 153 digs, 78 kills, 40 aces and 13 blocks. Luecke finished with academic all-state and first-team all-district honors.

Mendenhall was on the court for each match last season. She brought in 208 attacks, 36 kills, 17 digs, two blocks and two assists.

Katie Holtmeyer served up magic with a team-high 53 aces and executed 95.70% of her 372 serves. She also racked up 170 digs, 91 attacks, two blocks and an assist. Holtmeyer started in all 89 sets.

Isabella Groner completed 96.38% of her 359 serves and launched 41 aces. She started every game and unleashed 290 attacks, 282 assists, 130 digs, 63 kills and five blocks. Groner landed a spot on the academic all-state team. 

Megan Hoerstkamp delivered a team-high 291 digs and played every set. She also drew up 90 attacks, 41 aces, 28 assists and 16 kills. Hoerstkamp was selected to first-team all-district.

Avery Strubberg broke away for 476 attacks, 173 digs, 134 kills, 18 aces, eight blocks and an assist. At the end of the season, she was awarded a spot on the academic all-state and first-team all-district teams.

Alayna Lagemann balled out with 364 attacks, 132 kills, 45 blocks, five digs and an assist.

In the 25 sets she played, Morgan Guehne put together 38 digs, 28 attacks, 24 assists, seven aces and two kills. 

Bailey Fleer competed in two sets, executing three digs, two attacks and an ace.
