New Haven Post 366 Comes In Clutch To Upset Elsberry 7-5
New Haven Post 366 staged a late comeback in the bottom of the 6th to take down Elsberry 7-5 on Friday, June 28. Despite Post 226 outhitting them, New Haven snatched the victory in the first match of the home doubleheader.
Elsberry set the tone early with two quick scores in the top of the first.
Two innings later, Evan Scheer managed to get Post 366’s first run on the board. He capitalized on Brady Traub’s ground out to cross the dish and close the deficit.
New Haven continued their momentum in the bottom of the 4th. Traub tied it by sliding home on Ben Gilbert’s ground ball single. Gilbert later snuck to 2nd, then Anthony Groner followed by walking to first base. Carter Humphrey changed the tides by ripping a ground ball that gave way for two baserunners to the dish. Gilbert was made out while crossing it, but Parker Thurman survived and seized the lead. Landen Gildehaus flew out, and Groner clutched the final score of the inning to put Post 366 ahead 4-2.
Despite New Haven’s surge, Elsberry retaliated with three runs to take back the lead in the top of the 6th.
Post 366 stepped up to bat, knowing they would have to face the music as time ran out. Humphrey refused to let New Haven wave the white flag and landed home when Weston Hecktor smashed the game-tying RBI. As James Orf waved his bat back and forth at the plate, Gildehaus seized the opportunity to steal the lead again on a passed ball, while Hecktor advanced to 3rd and Scheer took 2nd. Traub launched New Haven’s final RBI on a grounder that allowed Hecktor to make it a two-run game.
Post 366 worked its magic in the outfield and Elsberry could not score in their final drive, handing New Haven a hard-fought win.
