Mary L. Horstmann, 65, of Berger, MO, passed away Friday, January 3, 2020 at Mercy Hospital, Creve Coeur, Missouri, after an extended illness.

Mary was born in Washington, Missouri on October 16, 1954, a daughter of the late Hilbert & Octavia E. (Dobmeyer) Horstmann.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and as a devoted daughter, she cared for them in the home until their deaths. Mary was educated in the Hermann schools. After graduation she attended advanced training to become a member of the Registry of the American Medical Technologists. Mary turned her education into a 30 year medical career of helping others. She was employed at the Hermann Area District Hospital for many years and was the manager of the lab. She made a career move to the Mercy Hospital in Washington.

As a life-long member, Mary was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel United Methodist Church at Senate Grove. She was very involved in the activities of her church and spent countless hours organizing, sizing, and folding clothes for the annual rummage sale. Mary also loved to cook and bake for others, so she turned her talents to help her church. She was instrumental in preparing meals for special events like the Easter breakfast and the Lord's Acre Dinner. Mary took great care in planning for these events, especially the Christmas cookie sale, which she baked as many as 170 dozen cookies. Nothing stopped her commitment and dedication. Even during an extended hospital stay in 2016. She was seen with recipes and cook books spread out on her hospital bed, making plans for the sale. Mary enjoyed the outdoors and loved her rural life, and feeding the birds, especially in the winter months.

Mary is survived by her sister, Myra Horstmann, of the home, a brother, Michael Horstmann, Sr. & wife Delores, of Washington, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was a wonderfully kind, generous, and dedicated friend. She will be greatly missed by her caregiver, Cindy Groner.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 8 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Senate Grove, where memorial services will follow at 2 p.m., with Rev. Doug Booth officiating.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Immanuel United Methodist Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Immanuel United Methodist Church or Immanuel United Methodist Cemetery. C/O Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home.
