1971 Career-Defining Classic Was No. 1 Hit 55 Years Ago Today
In 1971, Sonny James added another milestone to an already remarkable career.
His single, "Empty Arms," climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, continuing a streak of chart-topping success that few artists in country music history have matched. By that point, James had already established himself as one of the genre's most consistent hitmakers, and audiences were ready for yet another evocative track.
Known for his smooth voice and polished delivery, James brought a sense of emotional clarity to "Empty Arms," turning it into a standout song of the era. The track's lyrics center on heartbreak and longing, capturing the quiet pain of lost love with a restrained, heartfelt approach that resonated deeply with listeners.
The success of "Empty Arms" was part of an extraordinary run for James, who scored an unprecedented string of consecutive No. 1 hits throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. That consistency helped cement his reputation as one of country music's most reliable and influential artists during the period.
Often referred to as "The Southern Gentleman," James became known not only for his music but also for his professionalism and crossover appeal, which brought country music to a broader audience.
"Different type songs are needed along the way for freshness and variety.. but without changing the artist," James told biographer Dave Samuelson. "Loyal fans have certain things they listen for on each record."
One of James' earliest hits, "Young Love," became his signature song after it's 1956 release. "It caught the people in merchandising off guard… being a country artist they looked for me to sell a certain amount of records and each release was based on that," James said. "In other words, they didn't want to overpress before any record was released… the song surprised everybody it hit so fast, and was such a hit."
The song laid the groundwork for the impressive career that would follow; James became one of the most successful male country artists of his era. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
More than five decades later, "Empty Arms" remains a defining example of Sonny James' signature sound, a career-defining classic that continues to stand as a testament to his lasting impact on country music.

Chicago West Adorably Roasts Mom Kim Kardashian’s Memorable ‘KUWTK’ Diamond Earring Tantrum
In one of the most iconic scenes from Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim Kardashianthrows…well, a Kardashian-level tantrum after then-beau Kris Humphries tosses her into the ocean. While Kardashian initially giggles and smiles at the prank, things take a major turn when she realizes one of her diamond earrings is missing. Clutching her lobes, the reality TV star screams, “My earrings are gone!” continuing, “I’m going to cry. My diamond earring. Seriously.” And yes, by now we all know that she does, in fact, start to cry. She follows her in-ocean tantrum with a rant on dry land.
Of course, Kardashian has a pretty good reason to cry. After all, as she points out, “Literally, that’s $75,000.” Kim did clarify the scene on the Call Her Daddy podcast, telling host Alex Cooper, “That was like one of my first biggest purchases. So, they weren’t insured yet. That’s why I was so upset, is because that would be money down the drain.” As it turns out, little sis Kylie Jennerdove down into the ocean and found Kim’s missing diamond earring. Not only did she find the earring, but she also found the back too!
So what does this kind of magical moment in reality television history have to do with Kim’s daughter, Chicago West? Khloé Kardashian recently posted a hilariously cute clip of her daughter, True Thompson, and the Kardashian cousins (including Psalm West, Chicago West, and Dream Kardashian) recreating some of the most viral memes on Instagram.
View this post on InstagramAlong with roasting shots of celebs like Anthony Mackie, Zac Efron, and grandmaKris Jenner, the video also gently mocks Kim’s diamond earring in the ocean KUWTK scene. Eight-year-old Chi grabs her ear and makes a pained face as the clip of her famous mommy plays at the bottom of the screen. And fans can’t get enough of the absolutely adorable little girl.
Internet celebrity Austin McBroom commented, “Now I gotta do this with my kids lol,” while actress Viola Davis wrote, “Sooo sweet.” One fan joked, “Not the Kim slander,” and another noted, “Chi was on point.”
The praise for Chicago’s roasting skills didn’t end there. More applause for Chicago’s roasting skills poured in: “Chi doing Kim’s iconic scene is gold,” “That earring meme is diabolical”, and “The way Chi is so good at imitating Kim is hilarious.”
While mocking mom, Kim, was pure precious precociousness at its best, Chi’s cousin also made fans laugh with her loving imitation of “Lovey” on the phone (a.k.a. Grandma Kris Jenner).
Kate Beckinsale Says She Was Fired — Then Calls Out Mark Ruffalo Over What Happened Next
Kate Beckinsale has some things to get off her chest.
The actress took to Instagram on Friday, April 3 to allege that she was dropped by her talent agent after simply liking a social media post about a ceasefire in Gaza. The comments, which have since been deleted, were left under a post by Mark Ruffalo promoting his new film Palestine 36.
"Gosh, it must be so nice not to be fired by your Agent for liking a post about a ceasefire and not supporting the murdering of children," Beckinsale wrote per Entertainment Weekly, before going into significantly more detail about what she claims happened. "I guess having a penis in Hollywood really counts for a lot because you've not been fired by the same Agent that I had and she sent me a gift the week before so we didn't have any beef, but I liked a post about a ceasefire and I've got fired on the same day as Susan Sarandon was fired, two days after the end of the strike after nine months of none of us being able to work at all."
A screen shot of Kate Beckinsale's now deleted comment on Instagram from Friday, April 3.Beckinsale alleged the timing made everything worse. She was dealing with a family crisis at the time—her mother, Judy Loe, had been given six weeks to live with brain cancer, and her stepfather had just suffered a catastrophic stroke. "I was fired in two sentences after 12 years of friendship with my Agent," she wrote, adding that her agent "definitely knew what I was dealing with, alone."
The Underworld actress also revealed she had previously tried to address the situation privately with Ruffalo. "DMd you about this months ago but you ignored me," she told him directly. She later softened her stance somewhat, clarifying she wasn't blaming Ruffalo personally and that she genuinely supports his activism, but pointed to the silence as an example of "male privilege even in the good guys."
The callout comes during what has clearly been an extraordinarily painful stretch for Beckinsale. At the end of 2025, the 52-year-old shared an emotional video addressing the grief she has carried following the deaths of her mother in July 2025, her stepfather in January 2024, and her father Richard Beckinsale—who died when she was just five years old. In the video, she also pushed back against body shamers who had been commenting on her weight loss, explaining the physical toll of prolonged grief in a way that resonated deeply with fans. Fans flooded the now deleted post with comments of support.
Kendra Duggar’s Family Launches GoFundMe for Housing, Legal Bills
Kendra Duggar's parents Paul and Christina Caldwell have launched a GoFundMe for housing and legal bills.
The couple launched the fundraiser on behalf of themselves and their children on Saturday, Apr. 4. The Caldwells have yet to publicly address Kendra and her husband Joseph Duggar's arrests, and it is unclear if their financial situation is related to their daughter and son-in-law's ongoing court cases.
"My family is facing a difficult and urgent situation. We are in need of support to cover legal fees and secure safe housing," Paul wrote on the GoFundMe, which has a goal set at $24,000. "This has been an incredibly stressful time, and we are doing everything we can to protect ourselves and move forward."
"The funds raised will go directly toward legal representation to help us navigate the challenges ahead, as well as finding a safe place to live," he continued. "Both are essential for our well-being and peace of mind. We are grateful for any help, whether it’s a donation or simply sharing our story with others who might be able to support us."
"Thank you all so much for your care, concern, and prayers during this difficult time," Paul concluded. "We have set up this GoFundMe to help cover the unknown expenses of legal fees and housing. Anything you can do is a help—even if it’s just prayer. Your support means the world to us as we work to rebuild and find safety."
Paul did not share why the family needs legal representation.

'The Pitt' Star Teases Potential Night Shift Spin Off
The Pitt star Shawn Hatosy knows fans want to see more of the night shift characters.
The actor who portrays Dr. Jack Abbot on the hit HBO medical drama spoke with People on Friday, April 3 on a potential night shift spin off.
"There's been a lot of talk about the night shift. That would be really cool. We could do some cool, interesting things with the tone of the show," he told the outlet.
Hatosy added that he thinks his character chose the night shift because, "it's a certain kind of group of misfits that work together at night." However, he acknowledges that "everything is great" with how The Pitt is now.
Hatosy also revealed to People that there were conservations about Dr. Abbott potentially being full-time in season 2. However, in the new season, Abbott is moonlighting with a SWAT team.
"Then they came back to me to suggest that he’s in the E.R. in the middle of the season and I was like, what does that mean? Why am I coming in the middle? Am I dying? Am I coming in on a gurney?" he said.
While Dr. Abbott may not be working full-time in the emergency room, Hatosy continued to be heavily involved in season 2. The actor directed the first episode of the new season at the request of executive producer John Wells.
"I was like, I don’t know if I can do Abbot and be a director at the same time. And then I went home that night and thought, 'Did I just talk myself out of a job?' So I made sure to call him and say, 'I didn’t mean that I don’t want to direct period.' And then I think in season 2 somebody ended up not being able to do it, and I was able to step in," he shared.
In 2025, Hatosy won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Dr. Abbot.
1976 Rock Classic Ranked 'Best Road-Trip Song' of All Time
Most music lovers will agree that a road trip needs a solid playlist. In 2025, Rolling Stone magazinemade coming up with said playlist a whole lot easier by compiling a list of the "50 best road-trip songs" ever released.
The list included hits like The Doors' 1970 song, "Roadhouse Blues," the 1977 classic "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer, "Gin and Juice" by Snoop Dogg from 1993, AC/DC's 1979 "Highway to Hell," Tracy Chapman's 1988 song "Fast Car," The Beach Boys' "Fun Fun Fun" from 1964, and Bruce Springsteen's "Drive All Night" from 1980. The top five ranking featured Lit's 1999 hit "My Own Worst Enemy," the 2011 song "Rolling in the Deep" byAdele, Golden Earring's 1973 song "Radar Love," and "Crosstown Traffic" from 1968 by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
"Roadrunner" by The Modern Lovers, released in 1976, took home the title as the best road-trip song. Rolling Stone reported that the classic, written by the band's singer Jonathan Richman, is the quintessential song to play while on the road because of its appreciative, highway-themed lyrics.
Jonathan Richman Briefly Discussed 'Roadrunner' in a 2021 InterviewRichman, now 74, briefly discussed "Roadrunner" during a 2021 interview with TheSpinoff. The publication reported that the song was featured on the 2003 comedy, School of Rock soundtrack. In the interview, Richman was implored to share whether he believed the film's director Richard Linklater was correct when he declared that "Roadrunner" was "the first punk song."
"No. When we were playing we were just a rock band, and thought of ourselves as only that," replied the Massachusetts native.
In the Spinoff interview, Richman also shared some words of wisdom to those who are trying to make it in the music industry.
"I think the same principle applies now as applied then: Sing what you feel, and don’t sing what you don’t feel," said "That Summer Feeling" singer.
Beloved Beauty Brand Closing Most of Its Stores — What Shoppers Need to Know
If you've ever picked up a Boy Brow or a Cloud Paint at one of Glossier's sleek pink storefronts, you might want to check whether your local one is still going to be around.
The brand that turned dewy skin and minimalist packaging into a cultural moment has announced it will be shutting down nine of its twelve retail locations over the next two and a half years. When the dust settles, only three stores will remain—one in New York City, one in Los Angeles, and one in London. Everyone else is getting the axe, including shoppers in Atlanta, Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Dallas, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Seattle.
At the center of the shakeup is new CEO Colin Walsh, who came on board in October 2025 and has wasted no time. He's already cut roughly a third of the company's staff and pulled the plug on products that were previously in the pipeline, according to Business of Fashion. The stores that are staying open are being transformed into experience-driven spaces built around events and community rather than straightforward selling. It turns out those three locations are pulling serious weight, generating 55 percent of total store revenue and bringing in 60 percent of new customers.

For loyal fans worried about access, the brand's products aren't going anywhere. Sephora, Space NK, Mecca, and Amazon all carry Glossier, and that's increasingly where the brand is planting its flag. The retreat from physical retail comes after a rough few years for the company. Business of Fashion says that Glossier hit a valuation of nearly $2 billion in 2021 before watching that number slide below $1 billion. Attempts to raise fresh capital and reported acquisition talks with LVMH in 2024 both came up empty.
Nancy Guthrie Update: TSA Found Undeclared Loaded Gun in Chris Nanos' Luggage
Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing after she was abducted from her Tucson, Ariz., home—and a new report revealed that TSA found an undeclared loaded gun in Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos' luggage in 2024.
On Saturday, April 4, Fox News Digital detailed the incident and spoke with a Tucson community member, a woman named Cory Stephens, about the alleged major airport faux pas.
The incident happened on Nov. 6, 2024, when a TSA X-ray technician spotted a gun in Nano's bag and alerted an officer, according to an incident report obtained by Fox News Digital.
An incident report obtained by Fox News Digital from Nov. 6, 2024, shows a TSA X-ray technician saw the weapon in the sheriff's bag at Tucson International Airport and flagged an officer. In a private screening room, an officer asked where, in the bag, the gun was located. Nanos responded that it was in a zippered pocket, and the officer removed the weapon, finding five rounds in the magazine and another round in the chamber.

The incident did not result in any charges. Although Nanos missed his original flight, he was able to book another that same day after storing the gun in his vehicle.
“If a private citizen had encountered that at the airport, the consequences would have been greater,” Stephens told Fox News Digital. "We as citizens want answers. The safety of our community is at stake."
The report of Nanos' TSA incident came on the heels of the results of a workplace harassment investigation involving Nanos. It also comes amid ongoing criticism over how Nancy's case has been handled—including that the crime scene was "corrupted."
Nancy, 84, was last seen at her Catalina Foothills residence on the evening of Jan. 31 and remains missing, as of writing. No suspect has been named in the case.

On This Day in 1971, a Record-Breaking Broadway Musical Changed Theater Forever
On April 4, 1975, Stephen Sondheim’s Follies opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City. Though it’s been decades since the show’s original run, Follies is regarded as one of the most beloved musicals of all time.
Originally starring Alexis Smith as Carlotta Campion, Dorothy Collins as Sally Durant Plummer, Yvonne De Carlo as Phyllis Rogers Stone, and John McMartin as Benjamin Stone, Follies, directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett, snagged seven Tony Awards at the 1972 ceremony. Moreover, the original production ran for more than 500 shows.
Despite its staggering critical success, Follies was actually a financial disaster due to high running costs. According to multiple reports, Follies lost $792,000 all in. It was the most expensive Broadway musical in history — at the time.
The story, with music and lyrics written by Sondheim, follows a group of former showgirls who reunite at a rundown Broadway theater that is about to be demolished. Among them are two couples, Sally and Buddy Plummer and Phyllis and Ben Stone, who confront unresolved tensions and regrets from their younger years.
As they tour the theater one last time, the past comes to life alongside the present through younger versions of themselves and elaborate musical sequences. The reunion forces both couples to face the choices they made, the paths not taken, and the reality of their current marriages.
In 2001, the Broadway revival of Follies starred Blythe Danner as Phyllis Rogers Stone, Judith Ivey as Sally Durant Plummer, Treat Williams as Buddy Plummer, and Gregory Harrison as Benjamin Stone.
Fast forward a decade to 2011, and Follies was revived on Broadway, starring Bernadette Peters as Sally Durant Plummer, Jan Maxwell as Phyllis Rogers Stone, Danny Burstein as Buddy Plummer, Ron Raines as Benjamin Stone, and Elaine Paige as Carlotta Campion.
Bernadette Peters (4th R, rear) and Stephen Sondheim (5th R, rear) join the cast of Follies at a promotional event for the show’s new cast recording at Barnes & Noble, 86th & Lexington, on December 1, 2011, in New York City. (Photo by D Dipasupil/WireImage)Sondheim, who died on November 26, 2021, at 91 years old, was also responsible for shows like West Side Story, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Company, Into the Woods, and A Little Night Music.

These 4 Birth Dates Become More Resilient Later in Life
According to Mayo Clinic, resilience is defined as the ability to adapt to life's misfortunes and setbacks. Our youth is often filled with lessons that later in life transform into greater strength and wisdom. According to expert numerologists and astrologers, four specific birth dates are particularly associated with individuals who are likely to become more resilient as they age. During their childhood and young adulthood, these individuals may struggle to develop coping strategies, manage stress, and understand how to harness their inner empowerment. However, with each passing year, they tend to discover greater strength.

Which Birth Dates Grow Resilience Later in Life?Check for your birth date. Disregard birth months.
Born on the 5thPeople born on the 5th of any month are known for their flexibility and dynamism. Influenced by Mercury, the planet associated with mental agility, they possess an innate curiosity. In their younger years, they often take pride in their open-mindedness. However, as they grow older, they become more aware of the times they have felt the need to suppress their voices or ignore their own needs to please others or avoid misunderstandings.
In later years, while they still embrace their spirited nature, they prioritize their own thoughts, beliefs, and opinions, making these aspects fundamental to their identity rather than an afterthought meant to appease others. Their wiser, older self realizes that their true strength has always been within, just waiting for their permission to focus on what truly matters to them.

Born on the 11thIn numerology, the number 11 is considered a master number associated with intuition, spirituality, and divine healing. Additionally, the Moon, which represents emotional intuition, influences those born on the 11th. As a result, individuals born on this date tend to be naturally nurturing—they care for others instinctively.
Throughout much of their early lives, they often foster community, bring families together, and provide healing to their loved ones. However, they can become overwhelmed by emotional mood swings when those they care about are unhappy, taking on excessive responsibility, and ultimately draining their own energy. As they mature, these individuals develop the strength and awareness to give only when they have the capacity, rather than from an empty reservoir.

Born on the 16thDreamers bring healing to our lives. People born on the 16th are influenced by Neptune, the planet associated with dreams and creative imagination. These individuals often feel as if they are drifting through life, caught in the changing currents of circumstances.
However, as they grow older, they learn to manage their deep emotions rather than letting them dominate them. This resilience enables them to turn confusion into clarity. With increased inner strength, they start to transform their higher ideals into reality, disregarding the skeptics who urge them to be "more realistic."
COSMIC CALLING: This is Your Lucky Angel Number, Based on Your Birth Date
Born on the 24thWhen you hang around someone born on the 24th, you sense their unconditional positive regard, even after just one encounter. These individuals are highly diplomatic and deeply focused on relationships. In their early years, they may struggle to develop a strong sense of identity beyond their roles or others' perceptions of them.
However, as time passes, they gain a broader perspective. Later in life, they become more aware of their own wants, desires, and aspirations. Although they always maintain a family-oriented, caring nature, they realize that the best way to support the people who matter most is to ensure their own self-fulfillment rather than seek validation from external sources.

These Are the Most Common COVID-19 Cicada Variant Symptoms Doctors Are Seeing Now
In case seasonal pollen allergies and everything else going on in the world weren't enough to bug you, now there's a new COVID-19 variant: Cicada.
No, it doesn't involve huge, loud insects making a racket every few years in the summer, but it can impede on your warm-weather plans if you get infected.
"The term 'cicada variant' is used informally to refer to an Omicron subvariant, sometimes associated with BA.3.2, though it is not an official CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] or WHO [World Health Organization] designation," Dr. Eve Elizabeth Pennie, MD, a physician and epidemiologist at Drugwatch, tells Parade. "Current data suggest it behaves similarly to other recent Omicron strains, with mutations that may enable some immune escape."
Further complicating and worsening the realities of COVID-19 risk—which very much still exists, especially for older patients or those with pre-existing conditions or compromised immune systems—is that we don't have a great system for tracking it right now.
"One of the under-appreciated realities of where we are with COVID-19 right now is that the United States has no national system tracking symptoms in real time," Dr. Tyler Evans, MD, infectious disease specialist and founder and CEO of Wellness Equity Alliance, warns. "We are, in many ways, flying without instruments. Clinicians on the ground are not reporting new clinical patterns yet, but that silence is not the same as a signal of safety."
That said, there are ways to stay safe. Find out what the most common COVID-19 symptoms are in April 2026, what makes the COVID-19 cicada variant unique and how to protect yourself and your loved ones.
What Are the Most Common COVID-19 Symptoms in April 2026?If you do get the bug, what can you expect? "Symptoms remain similar to other recent strains and include sore throat, cough, fatigue, fever, congestion and headache," Dr. Pennie says. "There are no clearly unique symptoms associated with this variant."
Dr. Nneoma Oparaji, MD, DipABLM, DABOM concurs. "So far, the most common symptoms of the cicada variant appear to be like recent Omicron-family COVID variants," Dr. Oparaji explains. "These include sore throat, cough, low energy, headache, fever, chills, runny nose and body aches."
That said, it's still not a walk in the park for anyone infected, especially if you get hit with a severe case, which can happen even to healthy people not considered high-risk.
"Most cases remain mild," Dr. Pennie says, "but worsening symptoms such as difficulty breathing or chest pain require prompt medical evaluation."
Also, remember that all cases of COVID, even mild ones, put you at risk of long COVID, the effects of which we're still learning about, but that we know definitely aren't fun.

How Is the COVID-19 Cicada Variant Different From Prior Strains of Coronavirus?According to Dr. Pennie and Dr. Oparaji, what makes the COVID-19 cicada variant different from others isn't necessarily anything you'd feel if you were infected, but you may be more likely to get infected with it.
She explains, "The biggest difference is that it is more mutated compared to other strains of the virus, which raises concern about spreading and being able to dodge the immunity people already have."
Dr. Oparaji adds, "Compared with earlier variants, the main difference is a greater ability to infect individuals with prior immunity. However, it has not been shown to cause more severe disease or significantly different clinical outcomes."
Related: Getting COVID Again Is More Dangerous Than Most People Realize—Here’s What To Know
Do COVID-19 Vaccines and Boosters Protect Against the Cicada Variant?COVID-19 vaccines and COVID boosters for the 2025-2026 "season" (more on that in a minute) will, indeed, protect you, and getting the jab is the best way to prevent severe infection.
"The variants driving circulation right now, XFG and NB.1.8.1, are covered by the existing JN.1 lineage vaccines. That is meaningful, practical information for anyone wondering whether their last shot still matters," Dr. Evans says. "It does. Both XFG and NB.1.8.1 fall within the JN.1 lineage, meaning current vaccine formulations were designed with these variants in mind."
The same applies to the cicada variant. Dr. Evans explains, "For the roughly 90 million Americans living in the 25 states where BA.3.2 has been detected, my guidance is straightforward: the current vaccines still offer meaningful protection against severe illness. Getting up to date is not a precaution against a theoretical future threat. It is the most evidence-based tool available right now."
That said, Dr. Pennie notes, "The most recent COVID vaccines are expected to protect against the cicada variant, especially against severe illnesses. However, it may be less effective in fully blocking against infection because the Cicada variant appears to avoid antibodies compared to recent COVID strains."
Other protective measures include all the ones you likely know already: Masking in crowded areas, testing if you have symptoms, self-isolating if you test positive, avoiding people who are infected until they fully recover, washing your hands thoroughly and frequently and maintaining an otherwise healthy lifestyle (as in eating anutrient-rich diet, exercising, getting adequate sleep and managing stress).
Related: Does the Current COVID Vaccine Protect Against the Latest Mutation?
Will There Be a Lower Risk of COVID-19 in Spring and Summer? While warmer temperatures mean open windows and potentially better ventilation for some, that won't necessarily keep you from getting hit with the cicada variant or any other COVID strain in the spring and summer.
"People often ask me whether COVID-19 follows the calendar. The honest answer is: not reliably," Dr. Evans says. "Microbes rather do. We have seen surges in summer, in fall, in winter. What we can say is that a significant summer wave can sometimes exhaust the virus's immediate momentum and produce a quieter winter, but that calculus changes entirely if a new variant enters the picture."
"COVID-19's pattern is not exactly seasonal in the way influenza is," he adds. "Forecasting based on seasonal data alone is unreliable and has repeatedly led to premature declarations that a wave has passed."

What’s the Quickest Way To Get Rid of COVID Symptoms?Uh oh, you tested positive and feel awful. What can you do next?
"The best way to ease cicada variant symptoms is to treat it like other COVID strains and not like a ‘new’ illness," Dr. Oparaji recommends. Her tips for relief:
- "You can use over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol or ibuprofen for fever, body aches, headache; saline nasal sprays and rinses for congestion, honey for cough and sore throat and lozenges for throat pain if these medications are safe for you."
- "Rest by prioritizing sleep because it helps with recovery rather than trying to power through it."
- "Stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids such as water, electrolyte drinks, warm tea, broth and soups, especially if there is fever, vomiting or diarrhea. This is an underrated tool for recovery from COVID."
- "Ask about anti-viral medication if you are high risk, such as older, immunocompromised or pregnant patients, as well as patients who have obesity, diabetes or heart, lung or kidney disease. It is better to start taking these medications within five days of first having COVID symptoms."

9 Things Toxic Parents Hate (and Why Adult Children Should Absolutely Still Do Them)
If you grew up with a toxic parent, you probably spent a lifetime trying to diffuse or downplay situations so as not to set them off. But according to several psychologists who spoke with Parade, there are actually times when it can be valuable for you to go ahead and just do the things that toxic parents hate—because those things may help you create a better life for yourself.
"Adult children raised in unhealthy family dynamics often need to practice behaviors that promote autonomy and emotional well-being, even if those actions are uncomfortable for the parent," says Dr. Lance Garrison, dean of The Chicago School’s College of Professional Psychology.
Of course, pushing back against years of norms with a toxic parent is a challenge, but the outcome may be healing.
"What I often remind people is that recognizing unhealthy family patterns is not about blaming parents. It's about understanding what happened so you can choose something different," says Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, a psychologist, children's mental health expert and host of the podcast Dysregulated Kids.
Charting an uncomfortable path can be tricky, so Dr. Garrison recommends surrounding yourself with a strong support system. "Friends, partners, therapists and mentors can help provide perspective and emotional validation," he says.
If you have that support system and you're ready to start reclaiming your life in certain ways, this article explores the things you can do to push back against your toxic parent.
"I'm not suggesting doing these things to be mean or because you want to fight," says licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Patricia Dixon. Instead, she adds, "[These actions] can help you stop engaging with your toxic parent and allow you to take care of yourself."

What Is a ‘Toxic Parent’?Dr. Jenna Budreau-Roman, a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of the Love & Theory therapy practice, acknowledges that there's a difference between a truly toxic parent and a parent who occasionally makes mistakes.
"There comes a time in every adult's life when their parent falls from the idealistic pedestal we had set for them. We realize they are not superheroes, they don't know everything and they're imperfect," she tells Parade. "In my professional opinion, a 'toxic' parent is one who displays an intentional disregard for their child's wishes, boundaries and general autonomy."
She adds that toxic parents often have a difficult time taking accountability or encouraging their "adult child's independence, autonomy and personal development."
Dr. Dixon adds that toxic behavior can "include intentional actions like manipulation or intimidation, but also pervasive patterns of criticism, silence around emotions [and] shaming." She adds, "The behavior is repetitive, not isolated... the parent might not know they’re causing harm, but lack of intent doesn’t make the impact OK."
Over time, long-standing toxic patterns "can undermine a child’s sense of self-worth, emotional safety and independence," says Dr. Garrison.
Those feelings can stay into adulthood, but there are ways to break the patterns by advocating for yourself.
"Healthy adulthood means making choices that invest in your well-being, even if someone else doesn’t like it," Dr. Capanna-Hodge states.

9 Things Toxic Parents Hate (and Why You Should Do Them Anyway), Psychologists Share1. Setting boundariesDr. Budreau-Roman notes that toxic parents often struggle with boundaries.
"They feel entitled to override them and take great insult when their child pushes back," she says. "Boundaries are seen as rejection." But she calls them "the framework of healthy relationships."
When setting boundaries, "stand firm even if it feels awkward or uncomfortable," Dr. Dixon adds, saying that it's about consistency. "By asserting what you need, what your limits are and what you will not tolerate, you are showing your parent you value yourself."
And don't be afraid to start small.
"For individuals from highly controlling or abusive family environments, boundary-setting may need to happen incrementally and with support rather than all at once," shares Dr. Garrison. He says you can start by limiting certain conversation topics or not engaging in manipulative discussions.
Related: Therapists Are Begging You To Remember This 1 Thing About Boundaries
2. Saying "no"It's not enough to just set the boundary; you have to take action to show your parents that you're serious. That means occasionally (or often) saying no.
"You are allowed to say no to requests, demands for your time and to answering questions from your toxic parent that make you uncomfortable," states Dr. Budreau-Roman. "It will feel catastrophic at first, but like any muscle, the ability to naturally say 'no' can be strengthened with enough training."
3. Limiting accessJust because your parent raised you as a child doesn't mean they get unfettered access to your life as an adult.
"Think about the amount of contact you need with your parent in order to sustain a relationship that feels comfortable for you," suggests Dr. Budreau-Roman. That may mean not answering the phone every time they call, declining requests to "swing by," or even not allowing them to follow you on social media.
She says this distance is often needed "for the toxic parent to wean off the constant communication they have had."
Dr. Capanna-Hodge adds that you can create that distance in small increments.
"Sometimes the first step is simply sharing less, limiting visits or shortening conversations," she notes.

4. Prioritizing other relationshipsDr. Dixon says that it can be "scary" to a toxic parent when you prioritize your friendships or partnership.
"[The parent] wants you all to themselves, but allowing yourself to have other support systems makes you stronger as an adult," she shares. "[It] shows your toxic parent that you don’t revolve your life around them."
5. Making time for yourselfDespite what your parent may communicate to you, "self-care isn't selfish," says Dr. Dixon. She adds that it promotes important independence.
"When you put yourself first, you show your toxic parent you value yourself and you are psychologically full," she notes.
6. Holding them accountableAccountability is typically pretty tough for toxic parents, but Dr. Dixon says you have to hold them accountable anyway.
"[It] allows you to normalize realistic expectations, patterns [and] responsibilities," she states. When your parent fails to follow through or crosses a line, she says you can calmly and clearly "call them out... and hold them to what they said."
This can go for wanting accountability for things that may have happened in the past as well.
"Adult children benefit from acknowledging how family dynamics affected them rather than minimizing those experiences to maintain peace," says Dr. Garrison.

7. Making your own decisions"Toxic dynamics often involve control," says Dr. Garrison. It's important to push against that with "autonomous decision-making."
"Choosing careers, relationships or life paths independently is an important step in breaking that pattern [of control]," he adds.
8. Grey rockingDr. Budreau-Roman recommends "grey rocking" to deal with an especially frustrating toxic situation.
"In essence, you make yourself as interesting as a grey rock," she explains. "You respond with polite, boring answers that are devoid of any details. You do not ask questions to prolong conversations. Eventually, the other person loses interest and moves on."
9. Breaking the cycle"Many adults who grew up in difficult environments are deeply committed to creating calmer, healthier homes for their own children," says Dr. Capanna-Hodge. "That awareness alone can be the beginning of breaking generational cycles."
Know that your parents may continue to make autonomy difficult when you're raising your own children.
"Toxic parents often feel entitled to their grandchildren. They steamroll their adult children's requests... claiming they have already raised children and they 'turned out just fine,'" Dr. Budreau-Roman shares.
The key to breaking this toxic cycle is modeling proper behavior for your own children.
"If a grandparent is overly critical, undermines parenting decisions or creates tension in the home, boundaries matter," says Dr. Capanna-Hodge, adding, "Kids are always watching how adults treat each other... healthy boundaries protect not just the parent, but the next generation."
When it comes to setting boundaries around visiting, communication and more, Dr. Dixon recommends framing it "around what you are allowing for your child, not what you are taking away from your parent."
5 Things To Remember When Dealing With a Toxic Parent1. Don't take the bait"Many adults... notice that being around a difficult parent brings them right back to how they felt as a child," notes Dr. Capanna-Hodge. But she cautions that pausing and forming your thoughts in a controlled manner will leave you feeling better than if you are reactive.
"When you regulate yourself first before interacting with the toxic parent, you have the capacity to set those boundaries," she says.
If you need help working on this, Dr. Garrison recommends seeking help from a licensed mental health professional who can help you "develop improved emotional regulation."
2. Guilt is normalDr. Garrison says that feeling guilty about changing your relationship and setting boundaries is common, but it's "not a reliable guide."
"Feeling guilty is just a symptom of your conditioning, not a sign that you are making the wrong decision," he says.
3. Create a safety planMost toxic parents will push back against these types of changes to your relationship, but if you're truly concerned about their reaction, Dr. Dixon says to create a "safety and support plan."
"If your toxic parenting relationship includes coercion, harm or you fear they may hurt you; seek professional help... contact a therapist for support and reach out to authorities [and] legal services if necessary," she shares.
Additionally, she says you can "limit contact [and] be mindful of how often you reach out."
4. Change doesn't always happenDespite all the work you may do, it's possible that things will not change meaningfully or at all in your relationship.
"More often than not, my clients need to come to terms with the parent they have versus the parent they wish they had," Dr. Budreau-Roman states. "If a parent is truly toxic, most likely they do not have the capacity to make sustainable changes."
It's a hard reality, but it's important to keep in mind so you don't fault yourself. As Dr. Garrison puts it, "You cannot change another person's personality or long-standing patterns. Focus on what you can control, which is your response and your boundaries."
Related: Psychologist Says if You Have These 8 Habits, You Are Highly Emotionally Mature
5. There's an option to go no-contact"Going no-contact is usually a last step after many attempts to set boundaries have failed," says Dr. Capanna-Hodge. "If the relationship repeatedly causes emotional harm, manipulation or intense stress and the parent refuses to respect basic limits, stepping away may be necessary for someone’s well-being."
If this is the route you choose to take, Dr. Dixon recommends doing so with support.
"Talk to a therapist about the cycle and how it's affecting you," she shares. "Create a solid, step-by-step plan to cut contact, including what you will say to that person and how you will manage if they need you in an emergency or [need to] contact you."
And continue working on yourself.
"Spend this time establishing healthy habits for self-care, boundaries and your values," Dr. Dixon says. "Allow yourself to feel upset about losing the relationship you wanted, but choose you." She adds, "Remember, you are more than your relationship with your parent. You are your own, wonderful person, and you deserve healthy relationships."

Olivia Newton-John Was ‘Devastated’ by One Childhood Moment
A new biography about Olivia Newton-John is shedding light on a deeply personal moment from her childhood—one that she said stayed with her for years.
In “A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John,” author Matthew Hild recounts how the singer was profoundly affected by her parents’ divorce when she was a young girl.
Newton-John later reflected on the experience with remarkable clarity, recalling that her father was the one who told her the news. The moment left a lasting impression. “I still remember that day,” she said in a later interview. “I was devastated.”
The biography also notes that the experience marked a turning point in her childhood, leaving her to navigate long stretches of time on her own while her mother worked. Reflecting on that period years later, Newton-John acknowledged how deeply it affected her, describing it as a time when she struggled to adjust and was strongly impacted by the absence of her father.
At the time, Newton-John was just about to turn 10 years old. The separation not only changed her family dynamic but also meant she would see far less of her father, who moved hundreds of miles away for a new academic position.
The emotional impact carried over into other areas of her life. Newton-John later said the upheaval made it difficult for her to focus in school, and she often spent time alone after classes while her mother worked. In retrospect, it was a formative period—one that shaped both her resilience and her outlook on life.
Despite the challenges, Newton-John would go on to build one of the most successful careers in entertainment. She became a global superstar in the 1970s and 1980s, scoring multiple No. 1 hits and starring in the blockbuster film Grease, which introduced her to an entirely new generation of fans.
But as the new biography makes clear, her public image as a perpetually upbeat, “nice” performer only told part of the story. Behind that image was someone who had experienced real hardship at a young age—and who carried those experiences with her long after she found fame.
Newton-John died in August 2022 at the age of 73. In the years since, renewed interest in her life and career has highlighted not just her success as an entertainer, but also the personal strength that helped define her legacy.
Are Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli Still Married? Inside Their Relationship, Split, and Scandal Fallout
In 2019, more than two decades into their marriage, Lori Loughlinand Mossimo Giannulli found themselves at the center of the Varsity Blues college admission scandal. At the time, they put on a united front, sharing a legal team and walking into court holding hands. But now they’re popping up in the news cycle again — this time, because they’re headed for divorce.
Although the pair has yet to initiate legal proceedings, a representative for Loughlin confirmed in October 2025 that she and Giannulli were "living apart and taking a break from their marriage.” Reports have since suggested that Loughlin never really forgave her husband for “spearheading” a scheme that sent the Full House star to prison for two months.
Keep reading to learn more about Loughlin’s marriage to Giannulli, whether she ever dated costar John Stamos and if she’s in a relationship now.
Are Lori Loughlin and her husband still married? On paper, yes, but presumably not for long. The couple announced their separation in October 2025.
What did Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli have to do with the college admissions scandal? In 2019, the Hallmark star and her fashion designer husband were among the most high-profile figures caught up in the Varsity Blues college admissions scandal. They paid $500,000 to admissions consultant Rick Singer, funneling the money through a sham charity, to get their daughters, OliviaJade and Isabella Rose, into the University of Southern California as purported recruits for the crew team. Of course, neither of their kids were ever actually competitive rowers. As part of the scheme, the girls posed for staged photos on rowing machines.
After initially denying charges of fraud, bribery and money laundering conspiracy, Loughlin and Giannulli pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud in 2020; she served two months in prison, while he served five, along with paying fines and completing community service.

How much time did Lori Loughlin’s husband spend in jail for the college admissions scandal?Giannulli, creator of the streetwear brand Mossimo, served five months in a federal prison in Lompoc, Calif., starting Nov. 19, 2020.
Why did Lori Loughlin separate from her husband? The On Call actress has not publicly commented on her split from Giannulli, but Page Six reported that Loughlin pulled the plug on her marriage after she found "incriminating" texts on Giannulli’s phone and email.
Other tabloid reports have suggested that their marriage never recovered from the strain of the Varsity Blues scandal.
"She felt that he got her involved,” a source told Us Weekly. “She didn't fully blame him, but he spearheaded it.” The source added that Loughlin “never fully forgave him and never fully got over it, and they were never the same after."
Meanwhile, Loughlin’s Full House husband, John Stamos, offered his own take on their split, saying in an interview on Josh Peck's "Good Guys" podcast that Giannulli is a "terrible narcissist."
"Whatever he did to her, it busted her up to the core,” he said. “She put up with a lot over the years.”
He also called Loughlin a “saint” and said she “went to jail for” her husband. “She didn't deserve to be dragged through that,” he said. “I know for a fact it was all him."
What is the age difference between Lori Loughlin and her husband? There’s not much of an age difference at all. Loughlin was born in July 1964, while Giannulli was born in June 1963, making him about a year older.
When did Lori Loughlin and Mossimo get married? The pair tied the knot in November 1997, eloping two days before Thanksgiving. “We had Moss' best friend and a minister meet us, and we got married at sunrise and then we went to Thanksgiving dinner and we told everybody,” Loughlin told Entertainment Tonightin February 2018. "We had talked about doing a wedding and we just thought, 'Let's get up and let's go do it.'”
Do Lori Loughlin and Mossimo have a prenup?Yes, and according to TMZ, it would leave Loughlin with virtually nothing of her husband’s reported $80 fortune since the agreement provides their assets are separate property. Giannulli’s wealth comes largely from his mid-range fashion brand, Mossimo, which he launched in 1986 and sold in 2006.
Who are Lori Loughlin and Mossimo’s children? The estranged couple share two daughters: Isabella Rose Giannulli, born Sept. 16, 1998, and Olivia Jade Giannulli, born Sept. 28, 1999. Giannulli also has an older son, Gianni Giannulli, from a previous relationship, who was born in 1990.
Who was Lori Loughlin’s first husband?Loughlin was married to investment banker Michael R. Burns from 1989 to 1996.
Did John Stamos and Lori Loughlin ever date? No. Stamos addressed fans who assumed they were once a couple, saying on the Good Guys podcast, “A lot of people think, ‘Oh, you guys were romantic,’ or whatever,” Stamos said. “You know, I happened to say she was the one that got away in something — I think it was before I met [wife] Caitlin [McHugh] — and, you know, it was an interesting thing.”
He went on to compare a younger Loughlin to Sandy from Grease “before the leather” and his ex-wife, Rebecca Romijn, as “Sandy after the leather.”
“There was a moment where I had the choice, I think, and I was more into the rebellious,” he explained. “Lori was so sweet, and I loved working with her, but she was too nice for me.”

Is Lori Loughly dating James Tupper now?No. The day before news of Loughlin’s split broke, she and her Great American Family co-star were spotted dining together at The Bird Streets Club in West Hollywood, which raised some eyebrows. But their outing was said to be strictly platonic.
Is Lori Loughlin in a relationship? No, but according to Us Weekly, she started dating again six months after her split from Giannulli. “Lori has been putting herself back out there after her split from Mossimo and is dating again,” a source told the outlet. The insider added that the 61-year-old mother of two is “just having fun and keeping things light and casual.”

1980s Dance Anthem Was Inspired by a Slasher Film of the Same Name
Turn on the forever hit, '80s dance track "Maniac" by Michael Sembello, and it takes approximately six seconds before your heart starts pounding and you must (you must!) start moving your body. The song, which was popularized in the hit 1983 movie Flashdance and its soundtrack, will simply never die, and we're so glad for that—especially since its origins come from intense horror, murder, and gory death. Sorry, it's true.
As music history lore, and apparently Sembello himself tell us, he wrote the high-energy track with his songwriting partner Dennis Matkosky. After watching the graphic, psychological slasher film titled Maniac, Matkosky was inspired to write a song.
The synopsis for the 1980 film Maniac, directed by William Lustig, is described on IMDB as follows: "A psychopathic man [played by actor Joe Spinelli] goes on a killing and mutilation spree in New York City."
Related: 2001 Dance Anthem With 'Invincible Beat' Ranked No. 1 'Best Party Song of All Time'
Sembello dropped into the comments on Songfacts, and explained that Matkosky came up with the original inspiration for "Maniac," and "the basic idea and groove." He also recalls that the temporary lyrics for the chorus Matkosky had were: "He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure / He will kill your cat and nail him to the door."
"That direction obviously wasn't going to work," writes Sembello, "at which point the genius of Phil Ramone, producer of the soundtrack, who had the vision to see the potential of the song, asked us to change it to the present concept of a girl possessed with the passion of a gift for dance. Without Phil, it would not have happened."
Amazing how a song with such grisly beginnings could ultimately come into our hearts in 1983 and give us LIFE. The high-energy track often trends on TikTok and Instagram today and will not only go down in history as an '80s dance anthem, but it will also exhale serious life force from dance floors and, of course, workout studios until the end of time.
Watch the original music video of "Maniac" by Michael Sembello, starring Jennifer Beals:
"Maniac" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 10, 1983, and held the top spot for two weeks. The song was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, but another song from the Flashdance soundtrack "What a Feeling" (Giorgio Moroder, Keith Forsey, and Irene Cara, who also sang) took home the statue. "Maniac" was also included in a wacky danceoff scene in the 2003 movie American Wedding (aka, American Pie 3).

Nancy Guthrie Update: Chris Nanos Sets Record Straight on Investigators' Homicide Case Experience
Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing more than two months after she was abducted from her Tucson, Ariz., home—and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos just set the record straight about investigators' reported lack of homicide case experience.
During an interview with KVOA published on April 3, Nanos refuted a claim by an unnamed law enforcement insider, who recently spoke with NewsNation's Brian Entin.
"This sergeant has been the supervisor of homicide for over two years," the sheriff declared. "And in that time he has solved some pretty significant, very high profile cases for this area. The Reddington homicide, the Goodwill homicide. And they solved that within days."
Additionally, Nanos reiterated that he has complete confidence in his team. "You cannot attack my department. Attack the Sheriff, but you will not get by with attacking my department," he said.
He also pushed back on claims that investigators made glaring mistakes early on during the investigation into Nancy's disappearance.
"Discrediting an investigation like this doesn't help anything, it's very harmful," Nanos pointed out. "No, we don't believe there were any mistakes made."
Related: Nancy Guthrie Update: New Details on Suspect Situation Revealed by Law Enforcement Insider
Nanos's remarks came after an anonymous law enforcement insider alleged during an April 2 interview with NewsNation that the "people that were there on the scene were not tenured homicide detectives." He explained, "They didn’t have a lot of experience in homicide at that point. To include the supervisor, who, from my understanding, never investigated a homicide before being installed as the supervisor for the homicide unit.”
The sheriff's response also came after the results of a workplace harassment investigation involving Nanos were revealed.
Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on the evening of Jan. 31. As of writing, no suspect has been named in the case, despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward for information leading to the 84-year-old's recovery.

Legendary Rock Band's Latest Single Is 'Quite Cinematic', Says Lead Singer: Exclusive
Shinedown just dropped the sixth single from their upcoming eighth album, titled EI8HT, scheduled for release on May 29, 2026.
"Outlaw" is now available to stream on all major digital platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more. One thing fans will notice immediately is that "Outlaw" is the latest track where the band embraces a country-rock sound, and that was no accident.
Ahead of the release, Parade had the pleasure of speaking to lead singer Brent Smith about "Outlaw" and what inspired the new song.
"'Outlaw' is just... It's kind of a quintessential Shinedown song that's quite cinematic," Smith explained. "We love to create these songs that, when you listen to them, it's almost like a movie is playing in your subconscious, and you know, there are characters, there are different impulses in the song, there are different textures. It creates like its own world, so we have these songs from time to time to do that, and 'Outlaw' definitely did that."
Smith continued, "You know, when we wrote 'Searchlight' and then we decided to go a bit more... kind of rock country, but a bit more like outlaw country. Thus, 'Outlaw' was kind of born."
The Shinedown rocker went on to liken the feel of "Outlaw" to something you'd hear in a modern noir western, sharing that it has a "No Country For Old Men vibe to it."
With this latest release, that means we've heard one-third of the upcoming album. With 18 tracks, it's essentially a double album, and it's safe to say that several more hits haven't even been released yet.
EI8HT will drop just over two weeks after Shinedown's Dance, Kid, Dance Act II World Tour begins on May 13, 2026, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at the Resch Center.
Taylor Frankie Paul Shares Vacation Pics of Kids Amid Custody Drama
It looks like Taylor Frankie Paul is taking some time for herself and her family after a rough few weeks. Like many families with children are doing right now, she recently enjoyed a spring break getaway with her clan.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives reality TV star is no stranger to controversy. After all, she rose to fame after the MomTok Mormon mothers soft-swinging scandal broke in 2022. Of course, the drama didn’t end there. In 2023, Paul was arrested following alleged assault and domestic violence charges after a heated altercation with her then-beau and baby daddy, Dakota Mortensen.
Just as things were simmering down for the mom of three, Paul shares eight-year-old Indy May Paul and five-year-old Ocean Paul with ex-husband Tate Paul, and two-year-old Ever True with Mortensen, the latest controversy struck. A video of the domestic assault surfaced (involving her ex-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen) just as Paul’s upcoming season of The Bachelorettewas slated to air. And as fans and followers already know, ABC pulled the plug on the show before its release.
The turmoil didn’t stop there. Mortensen filed for, and was granted, temporary custody of Paul’s youngest child, Ever. So if you’re wondering why the reality TV mom’s latest social media post doesn’t include the two-year-old, now you have an answer.
Who is in the post? Paul has managed to stay out of the spotlight in the past few weeks. But she recently added to her Instagram Stories, sharing a glimpse of her family’s spring break vacation at the glam Hoodoo Moab Curio Collection Hotel by Hilton in Moab, Utah.
Paul posted a pic of a luxe gift box containing a travel journal (with her daughter Indy’s name on the front), lanyards, and a few other goodies, writing, “Thank you @hoodoomoab for having us this week.” She also added a photo featuring a parade of off-road vehicles, titled “When the family meets in @area.bfe.” The Area.BFE shout-out refers to a local Moab tour and rental company specializing in off-road adventures and excursions.
But the photos didn't stop there. Paul also posted a family picture between the two other vacation images. While it is somewhat blurry, fans can see the mom cuddling her two older kiddos, Indy and Ocean.
Taylor’s mom, Liann May, shared the group shot to her Instagram Stories, adding, “Family time is my favorite time.” Along with the family photo, she added a video clip of the off-roading trip and a look at their serene vacation scenery.
