New Haven’s Late Surge Not Enough To Overcome Union Post 297
New Haven Legion Post 366 A lost grip on their comeback in a 14-4 loss to Union Post 297 14U on Wednesday, June 12. The game ended with a mercy rule during the bottom of the 5th.
Trailing by three runs to start the 4th inning, New Haven was desperate to mark the scoreboard as they had not put up a score yet. Carter Humphrey and Evan Scheer were not ready to let Post 366 throw in the towel, and both managed to walk onto the diamond. While Weston Hecktor was at bat, Humphrey stole 3rd, then Scheer sneaked to 2nd. Hecktor sent a line drive deep to right field, allowing Humphrey to break the scoring drought for Post 366. Wyatt Meyer sacrificed himself on a ground out, and Scheer crossed the dish. James Orf drove in the final RBI of the inning, which allowed Hecktor to punch it home for the game-tying run.
Ayden Keen, New Haven’s final scorer against Union, snatched their fourth run in the top of the 5th. He took home after the bases became full.
Despite Post 366’s late surge, Union showed no mercy and clawed through the bases for a ten-run lead to end the match after five innings.
