1970 Folk Rock Hit That Charted No. 1 for Weeks Is Actually Cited as One of the Big Reasons an Iconic Duo Split
When Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel joined melodic forces, folk music was changed forever, and it all started in the fourth grade. Simon first laid eyes on Garfunkel in their Queens, New York, elementary school and, according to Gold Radio, realized it would be the best way to get girls interested. That primitive motivation was all it took to birth one of the greatest American folk duos ever to grace the airwaves.
But despite their delightfully simplistic, somewhat endearing beginning, their end was full of much more bitterness, jealousy, and a hit song no one would ever think could be part of their undoing.
By 1970, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had debuted after a tumultuous recording session, and it would ultimately be one of the final nails in the coffin of their friendship.
“We were really best friends up until Bridge over Troubled Water,” Simon said in the first episode of the MGM+ documentary series In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, according to The Independent. “[Afterward], it didn’t have the harmony of the friendship… that was broken.”

When Problems for Simon and Garfunkel Began EmergingAfter the wild success of their soundtrack for The Graduate, Garfunkel landed a role in the film adaptation of Catch-22, taking it on amid their work on Bridge Over Troubled Water.
“Artie said, ‘Yeah, the way it’s going to be is that I will do movies for six months, then I’ll come back, you’ll have written the songs, and we will do the album,’” Simon elaborated in the documentary. “And I thought, ‘Yeah? Actually, no. That’s not gonna happen. I am not gonna do that.’”
Part of the problem, according to Simon, was that their partnership was heavily "uneven," with him feeling he did most of the heavy lifting as the band's songwriter. It got even more complicated when filming for the movie ran over, and Simon supposedly demanded that pieces of the upcoming album be sent to him, rather than leaving to actively work on it with Garfunkel.

How Bridge Over Troubled Water's Success Meant the Band's DemiseAside from the writing and recording strains, Simon, in general, didn't believe it was a strong song. According to Smooth Radio, the songwriter wrote it quickly and didn't think much of it. However, producer Roy Halee saw its potential and convinced him to write a third verse, turning it into a grand production. Simon thought it was far too grandiose for his "little hymn" and reportedly thought it was "too long, too slow and too orchestral to be a hit single."
The recently deceased Clive Davis, who was at Columbia Records at the time, believed in its mass appeal and made it the single and title track of the album. Much to Simon's shock, it catapulted to the top of the Billboard charts and stayed at No. 1 for weeks.
Simon also admitted to feeling jealous of Garfunkel's vocals on the track. After watching the crowd give Garfunkel a standing ovation after a live performance, he admitted to thinking, "I wrote that song." Simon claimed, according toFox News, "Or maybe it was my perfect Freudian trauma. My mother said to me once, ‘You have a good voice, Paul, but Arthur has a fine voice.’"
Shortly after that, the group disbanded, and the two stopped speaking for decades. Though they had crossed paths, it wasn't until 2024 that the two met for a healing lunch, which brought them back onto speaking terms.
In an interview with The Times, Garfunkel said, “I actually had lunch with Paul a couple of weeks back. First time we’d been together in many years. I looked at Paul and said, ‘What happened? Why haven’t we seen each other?’ Paul mentioned an old interview where I said some stuff. I cried when he told me how much I had hurt him. Looking back, I guess I wanted to shake up the nice guy image of Simon & Garfunkel. Y’know what? I was a fool!
“We’ve made plans to meet again. Will Paul bring his guitar? Who knows. For me, it was about wanting to make amends before it’s too late. It felt like we were back in a wonderful place. As I think about it now, tears are rolling down my cheeks. I can still feel his hug.”
While it's been two years since the two reunited and we've yet to get a reunion song, die-hards are still holding out hope.
Milo Ventimiglia Welcomes Baby No. 2 With Wife Jarah Mariano — See Their Baby's Unique Name
Milo Ventimiglia is now a proud father of two!
The This Is Us alum, 48, and his wife, Jarah Mariano, have welcomed their second child together, a son. The model shared the happy news on Instagram on Monday, July 6.
The post featured a sweet black-and-white photo showing Mariano's hand, Ventimiglia's hand, and their 18-month-old daughter Ke'ala Coral's hand all holding onto the newborn's tiny fingers. A second photo showed the happy family in their backyard, with Mariano, 42, cradling her baby boy while Ventimiglia played with their daughter. The family dog, Duke, was also included in the photos, sitting in front of his favorite humans.
In addition to sharing the adorable photos, Mariano revealed their little one's unique name: Rock-Anthony Makoa Ventimiglia. While she didn't detail the meaning behind the moniker, the mother of two did share some insight into the couple's first moments as a family of five.
"These last couple of weeks have been chaos, but in the best possible way. Welcome back home, Rock-Anthony Makoa Ventimiglia," Mariano captioned her post. "Can't wait for all of the adventures ahead with our family of 5!"
View this post on InstagramRock-Anthony's arrival comes a year and a half after Ventimiglia and Mariano welcomed their daughter in January 2025, not long after the actor and his wife were forced to evacuate their home amid the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
It was while celebrating Ke'ala's first birthday earlier this year that the couple revealed they were expecting their second child.
And though Mariano didn't directly address her second pregnancy in the post, the photo — which showed her holding her daughter at the beach while showing off her baby bump — served as the couple's official announcement. Calling motherhood the most "unique" love she's ever experienced, the proud mom gushed over her firstborn while sharing her hopes for her daughter's future.
"Happy 1 year, baby girl. When you came into my life I had 2 distinct thoughts, one immediately after the other—I would die for you in a heartbeat, but now I also have to live as long as I possibly can to be around to make sure you're safe," Mariano wrote in the caption.
She continued, "This is the most unique love I've ever experienced, just as unique a soul as you are. In a world with so much fear and hatred, I know that you will bring your radiating light everywhere you go to make it a better and brighter place for those around you. I love you, Ke'ala Coral, forever. x Mama."
View this post on InstagramVentimiglia, meanwhile, spoke to People last month ahead of welcoming the couple's second child and shared his excitement about his growing family, which also includes the pair's "100-pound firstborn," Duke.
"At this point, I'm completely outnumbered in the babies-to-wife-to-husband ratio," Ventimiglia quipped, telling the outlet that the couple were "very happy" to be expecting another baby.
"I'm most excited for my daughter to have a sibling, someone to grow up with," he added.
Pat Sajak’s Retirement Just Took an Unexpected Turn
Pat Sajak may be retired but he's still got jokes.
The former Wheel of Fortune host took to X on Monday, July 6, to share something funny with his followers.
"Now that I’ve been off TV for a while, I thought I could walk anonymously through a mall. It worked at first, but then someone yelled, 'Hey, it’s Pat Sajak!' Then I was surrounded by people. 'How are you?' 'We miss you!' It was a bit of a circus," Sajak wrote before the punchline. "I’m almost sorry I yelled."
X users found the post extremely funny and many
"Pat, you must be a hoot to hang around! I'd roam the mall with you any day my friend! We could hit up the Orange Julius or something," one person replied.
"Are you here all week, Pat?" someone else joked.
"Funny! You are a loved person even if you do have to out yourself," a third comment read.
Sajak's newest post comes a few weeks after he shared a life "update" with fans.
“I know a lot of you have been wondering, asking me how I’m doing, and I’m enjoying life," Sajak said into the camera as we walked near a beach. "I moved here to Montana, and everything’s going just great," he continued—clearly not in Montana. The post quickly went viral and has been watched more than 1.4 million times.
Sajak, who will turn 80 in October, left Wheel of Fortune in 2024.
“Well, the time has come to say goodbye. I have a few thanks and acknowledgements before I go. And I want to start with all of you watching out there,” the longtime host said in a farewell message. “It’s been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade."
Ryan Seacrest has since taken over the role.

'80s Rock Band Announces New Album for the First Time in 12 Years
Rock supergroup Asia has some exciting news for their fans.
It was announced on Monday that the English supergroup will be releasing their first album in 12 years. Titled Indigo, the new LP is set to be out on Nov. 6 via Frontiers Music Srl. This marks Asia's 14th studio album since their formation in 1981. The lead single, "The Traveller (Into The Light)," and its music video are available to stream now, and the full album can be pre-saved on Frontier Music Srl's official website.
"The first track off the album is a high-power-energy piece with a few elements of prog trickery but retaining the accessible-chorus block, which was always a signature of Asia's music from the very beginning," Asia keyboardist Geoff Downes told Blabbermouth.
Downes is the only original member of Asia, while new members Harry Whitley, John Mitchell and Virgil Donati joined in 2024.
View this post on InstagramWhen Asia was formed in London in 1981 by progressive rockstars Downes and Steve Howe of Yes, John Wetton of King Crimson and Uriah Heep, and Carl Palmer of Emerson and Lake & Palmer, it quickly became one of the most successful acts from the United Kingdom in the 1980s. They released their self-titled debut a year after their formation, and it remains their best-selling album and was listed by Billboard as the top album in the United States in 1982. The lead single, "Heat of the Moment," reached Top 40 in various countries and hit No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
The group has always been proud of "Heat of the Moment," which they still perform in their concerts today.
"Prog still lived deeply inside the four of us, but with Asia we sliced away the fat," Wetton said while reflecting on their formation, according to Louder. Wetton was also extremely proud of the lyrics and says that "it's the only song I've ever heard that begins with an apology. It didn't fare too badly for something thrown into the pot as a bit of an experiment right at the end of the session."

Despite their huge success in the 1980s, it caused Asia to briefly split from 1986 to 1989 due to creative differences and commercial pressures. Wetton and Palmer were able to reunite the band for a European tour, but with a different lineup. Since they reunited in 1989, Asia has released 10 more albums and gone on multiple tours around the world.
Downes described the album as "a joy to make," and started writing the album with Wetton back in 2015, a year after they released their most recent album, Gravitas. Unfortunately, in January 2017, Wetton passed away in his sleep at 67 years old, and was battling illness and health issues.
"John Wetton and I started putting our ideas together, aiming to get into the studio once more. It was with great sadness that John became seriously ill during this time, and we had put [our plans on hold], and sadly John passed away before we could continue and complete it," Downes described. "It was always in my mind that at some point it would be a shame not to finish off some of these songs and finally release them as part of an Asia album."
Indigo has 16 tracks, including collaborations with Steve Howe and Mike Portnoy. Most of the album was recorded throughout 2025 and produced by the band, with mixing and mastering done by John Mitchell.
"The album was really a joy to make. I forged a close writing relationship with Harry, and I felt how great was to be working with someone who had very similar musical influences and taste once again, just as I did with John," Downes said in a statement. "I feel that this is one of our best albums to date. The songs are deep in musicality, with a powerful and original performance, dynamics and strong lyrical undertones — it's an album that hopefully our fans will widely appreciate, and support our cause to put Asia back on the map."
Indigo will be released on streaming platforms on Nov. 6. The lead single, "The Traveller (Into The Light)," is out now.

Entertainment Weekly Picks the Best TV Shows of 2026 (So Far): 'The Best of the Best'
Hard as it is to believe, we're currently past the halfway point in 2026, with the current year closer to its end than it is to its start.
Over the past few months, numerous great shows have come and gone, earning the standout attention of viewers across the globe. As many fantastic TV series as we've seen since the start of 2026, however, most critics tend to agree that only a handful of shows have truly captured audiences' imaginations.
More recently, Entertainment Weeklyshared their own list of the best TV shows of 2026 to date, circling some of the series they considered "the best of the best."
Ranking their picks in alphabetical order, the outlet first looked to Netflix's Big Mistakes as one of the platform's best recent offerings, followed by HBO Max's award-winning comedy, Hacks.
Likewise, Entertainment Weekly shared an altogether positive review of HBO's Industry and the network's similarly well-received A Knight of the Seven Kingdom. (For the latter series, the publication wrote, "Who could’ve guessed that a modest, half-hour drama filled with poop gags and 10 inches of prosthetic man meat would be the show to revitalize the fandom’s faith in Game of Thrones?")
Meanwhile, HBO's new Steve Carrell-led comedy Rooster earned standout attention from EW, along with AMC's glam rock-inspired The Vampire Lestat. Unsurprisingly, EW also highlighted the critically acclaimed continuations of Hulu's Paradise, HBO Max's The Pitt and Apple TV's Shrinking.
Additionally, the publication gave the viral new Apple TV horror comedy series Widow's Bay a glowing stamp of approval.
"Katie Dippold's sublimely strange and surprisingly scaryWidow's Bay was perfectly poised to fall victim to the Apple TV curse — competently made, intellectually engaging shows worth watching never finding audiences and one by one disappearing beneath the waves," EW wrote. "But the horror comedy about a tight-knit New England island community besieged by an ancient curse was miraculously rescued by that vanishing phenomenon in the world of TV fandom: genuine word-of-mouth fervor.
1977 Rock Song, Lasting Over 10 Minutes, Remains a Classic 49 Years Later
At more than 10 minutes, "Sheep" isn't just one of Pink Floyd's longest songs, it's also one of the band's most ambitious.
Released in 1977 as the closing track on Animals, the progressive rock epic was never released as a single, yet it has become one of the group's most acclaimed deep cuts. Nearly 50 years later, its sweeping composition, biting social commentary and unforgettable musicianship continue to captivate listeners.
The song completed one of rock's most celebrated concept albums.
Written primarily by Roger Waters, "Sheep" serves as the dramatic finale to Animals, an album inspired in part by George Orwell's Animal Farm. Throughout the record, Waters divides society into three symbolic groups, dogs, pigs and sheep, to explore themes of power, conformity and rebellion. By the album's conclusion, the once-submissive sheep rise up against their oppressors, giving the story a powerful and unexpected ending.
"I don't think the humour of the work has ever really escaped in the way it might have," Waters said in a 1987 interview. "The political subject matter on top of it has been generally dour. I suppose I have always appeared as a rather melancholy person. But I'm not. My situation is like the opposite of the cliché of the comedian who when he's not performing is a miserable sod."
Musically, the track showcased Pink Floyd at the height of its creative powers.
"Sheep" opens with Richard Wright's tranquil electric piano before gradually building into a tense, driving arrangement anchored by Nick Mason’s drums, David Gilmour's soaring guitar work and Waters' unmistakable bass lines. One of its most memorable moments arrives midway through the song, when a distorted spoken-word passage reimagines Psalm 23, reinforcing the album's themes of control, obedience and resistance.
Although its length kept it off commercial radio, "Sheep" became a fan favorite through the success of Animals. The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, further cementing Pink Floyd's reputation as one of rock's most adventurous and influential bands.
The song also became a highlight of the band's 1977 In the Flesh tour. Its dramatic shifts in tempo, elaborate live presentation and emotionally charged finale made it one of the standout moments of the concerts, while its reputation continued to grow through successive generations of Pink Floyd fans.
Over the years, "Sheep" has earned recognition as one of the strongest compositions in the band's catalog, demonstrating how Pink Floyd could combine philosophical ideas, literary inspiration and progressive rock into a single, cohesive work.
"When I designed [the Animals] album cover and went and photographed Battersea Station, I thought it was quite good symbolically of a band like Pink Floyd, because it's a thing that has some power and there are four of us and four chimneys," Waters told Rolling Stone in 2019. "It's all very phallic and whatever. It sort of represented to some extent the power, maybe, that we had as a band if we cared to use it for something. And maybe music has no power. I don’t believe that. I believe music is a very powerful art form and that it can be used as a political tool, as well as a source of entertainment to keep the masses quiet."
Nearly 50 years after its release, "Sheep" remains a testament to the band's willingness to push musical boundaries. Lasting more than 10 minutes, the ambitious epic continues to reward listeners who take the journey, proving that some of rock's greatest classics were never intended to fit inside the confines of a hit single.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tied the knot over the weekend, and fans can’t get enough of their massive Madison Square Garden wedding. It turns out, Panera is just as obsessed with the wedding as the rest of us.
With Adam Sandler officiating and dozens of celebrities in attendance, the wedding has become the talk of the internet. To celebrate the newlyweds, the café is hosting a giveaway that Swifties won't want to miss.
“It’s been a long time coming, and Panera is toasting the recent internet-breaking Loaf Story along with something for fellow bread lovers everywhere,” the company said in a statement shared with Parade. “From the brand who thinks about bread 100% of the time, Panera knows all too well that no loaf story is complete without sourdough.”
On July 9, participating cafés in the US will give away 13 sourdough loaves — first-come, first-served. The number is a nod to Swift herself.
"I was born on the 13th,” Swift said in a 2009 interview with MTV News. “I turned 13 on Friday the 13th. My first album Taylor Swift went gold in 13 weeks. My first #1 song had a 13-second intro. Every time I've won an award I've been seated in either the 13th seat, the 13th row, the 13th section or row M, which is the 13th letter. Basically, whenever a 13 comes up in my life, it's a good thing."
Fans quickly flocked to Panera’s comment section on Instagram to share their excitement for the Swift-themed giveaway.
“It’s a loaf story baby just say yes,” one fan joked, putting a twist on Swift’s song “Love Story.”
“LOAFING HIM WAS BREAD,” Panera replied.
“I’m sooo breadddy to get mine,” another said.
Swift’s wedding took place on July 3, around 7:30 p.m. (ET). The black-tie event hosted a rumored 1,000 guests, including actors such as Hugh Grant, Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez. Find our wedding coverage here.

Dove's Limited-Edition Dessert-Inspired Collection Is Already a Hit Among Fans — 'A Dream Come True'
Smelling like ice cream in the sweltering heat of mid-summer weather? Dove is all for it. The body care company is making a case for turning your shower into a multi-sensory experience with its brand-new line of washes and scrubs.
To cool off the heatwave, Dove's Ice Cream Parlor line arrives just in time. The limited-edition collection comprises four delectable scents across four staple product formats: Raspberry Sorbet, Strawberry Swirl, Pistachio Gelato, and Coconut Vanilla, available in deodorant, body wash, body scrub, and body mist.
"The lineup pairs playful, summer-inspired scents with the superior care and is designed for fragrance layering," the brand stated in a press release shared directly with Parade.
Online, the new release is already going viral, with one TikTok video displaying the products in-store garnering over 120K views. We will admit, they do sound scrumptious, but don't actually taste them (they're not edible... even if they smell like it).
View this post on InstagramElsewhere across social media, the hype is just as palpable.
"Wow a dream come true 😍," one remarked in the comments section of the brand's Instagram announcement on Monday, July 6. Another declared a clear favorite among the bunch, writing, "OMG YALL MADE A RASPBERRY ONE I WAS PRAYING FOR THISSS."
"I need to get my hands on these scents," someone else added, with more saying, "Omg sounds delishhhhh 😍," "Oh yes please to all," and "need to try!"
"Want them all 😍," another person confirmed.
Reactions continued to roll in on separate uploads, too. "Imagine - need a sample of the whole line 😍," one fan dropped under food blogger Markie Devo's post, where he quipped, "Dove will try any which way possible to get you to smell like a snack!🥵"
As evidenced by pistachio continuing to take over new launches in both the food and beauty spaces, the trendy flavor and scent note is still enjoying a serious heyday—but it seems to be another option in the lineup that has shoppers' interest particularly piqued. The comments section was filled with an overwhelming response regarding the other gourmand fragrance offering, Coconut Vanilla.
"Coco Vanilla and Pistachio Gelato for suuuure 😍😍😍," one added, with several others echoing that sentiment with things like, "Coco Vanilla 😍," "Coconut vanilla!!🥥🌴💛," and "Definitely coco vanilla!!! I love dove products they’re always so good."
The latest launch follows the Dove x FIFA Limited-Edition Palo Santo & Sage Oil collection in honor of the FIFA World Cup. Other body wash collections include its "luxury in a bottle" Serum+ Oil Body Wash and limited-edition collaboration with hit Netflix series Bridgerton, which debuted in indulgent scents like Whispering Wisteria, Love & Meadows, Raspberry Rendezvous, and Moonlight Masquerade.
Dove's Ice Cream Parlor body care collection is available at Target, in-store and online.

Taylor Swift's Madison Square Garden Wedding Has Fans Buzzing Over a Documentary Theory
It’s a love story, and they both said yes.Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’sJuly 4th weekend nuptials captivated the country. Scratch that, the world. The over-the-top wedding with a star-studded 1,000-plus guest list, Madison Square Garden venue, and the couple’s luxe custom Christian Dior hate couture styles seems kind of normal for a celeb. Right?
But some fans have a theory about the highly guarded event, and they think that this was more than just a wedding.
In the days leading up to Swift and Kelce’s “I do’s,” TMZ reported spotting a filming notice outside of Madison Square Garden. Posted on the door of MSG, the notice included the June 29 through July 3 time frame (the dates of set-up, the rehearsal dinner, and the ceremony) and a warning that anyone who entered the building consents to being filmed.
Along with the notice on the door, fans found similar 'film shoot' signs around Madison Square Garden before and during the event.
Barricades at Madison Square Garden. Photo: Tom Weller/dpa (Photo by Tom Weller/picture alliance via Getty Images)Social media sleuths immediately began gathering clues and piecing together what seemed like a movie in the making. And this wouldn’t be the first time Swift has turned an IRL event into a big-screen box office blockbuster. Taylor’s The Eras Tour concert film grossed over $261.6 million worldwide—and that was just the theatrical release. A $75 million Disney+ streaming deal took the total estimated revenue to over $336 million!
Given the star’s massive fan base, it makes sense that she might want to share her wedding with the world. The notice on the door? The secretive venue that also happens to be large enough to film a documentary inside? The set-like decor that was trucked in for days? The not-exactly-understated custom designer gown? The guest list featuring a who’s who of Hollywood elite? It’s all coming together. At least, for some savvy fans.
Even though there is absolutely no confirmation about a Taylor Swift wedding documentary, and neither the bride nor the groom has addressed the rumors, it hasn’t stopped the social media speculation.
While some fans are rooting for a movie, others take a different view of the possible clues. One Reddit user wrote, “I’m leaning more toward music video than documentary,” and another added, “She also seems sentimental enough that if she wrote a song for her wedding (likely), she may want to use footage for a music video. I could see that being a future anniversary release.”
Other fans pointed out, “Most people make a video of their wedding. The issue I have is if she releases such a private film on streaming for money,” and, “For the sake of controlling the narrative with what gets leaked, what gets said, and how things get portrayed, having everything documented makes sense. You can pull your own receipts whenever you want.” Followed by, “It wouldn't surprise me at all if she released a documentary of the wedding or used footage of it in music videos or digital productions. So long as fans feel this personal attachment to her, they’re going to enjoy that kind of content.”
The debate raged on (online) as to whether Taylor would use the footage for a video, a film, or just keep it to herself. But for now, it looks like Swifties will just have to wait.

Pilates Instructors Share Their 7 Favorite Longevity-Boosting Exercises
Fitness enthusiasts usually have a certain goal in mind that fuels their workout routine. Some focus on stress relief, while others prioritize sculpting a six-pack or firming “bat wings” (aka, arm fat). But for many, a key desire is to boost longevity—ultimately supporting an active, independent, long life that’s free of chronic disease.
To achieve this goal, it’s essential to focus on functional fitness, which means performing exercises that translate to everyday living. This includes keeping your hips mobile so you can move comfortably, building grip strength so you can carry grocery bags or lift your grandchildren and maintaining core strength to reduce your risk of falls and injuries. Plus, you likely don’t want to simply be able to take care of yourself—you want to genuinely enjoy life, whether that means hitting the courts for a pickleball match, boating, traveling the world or simply walking to smell the roses.
Preserving muscle mass, bone density, balance and mobility are crucial steps in the right direction, which is why many older adults turn to Pilates.
“Most people know Pilates for its remarkable effect on core strength, but one of its most important, and often overlooked, benefits is its impact on spinal health or what I often refer to as spinal integrity. When we strengthen the deep abdominal wall, including the transversus abdominis, along with the deep spinal stabilizers such as the multifidi, we create a foundation of strength, mobility and stability, while decompressing the entire spinal column,” explains Brynne Billingsley, Pilates instructor and founder of Progressive Pilates Williamsburg. “Maintaining a healthy, resilient spine is one of the most important investments we can make in our long-term health.”
Your ability to lift, walk, balance, rotate, exercise and lead a confident, independent life as you age greatly depends on how well you preserve spinal function. To help you get started, we learned from Pilates instructors their favorite longevity-boosting exercises to add to your routine.

Why Pilates Is an Effective Training Modality for Those Who Want To Boost Their LongevityPilates is one of the few training modalities that challenges balance, mobility, strength, coordination, posture and breath all at once. A well-rounded, longevity-boosting workout should emphasize all of these things. After all, they’re key components for leading an active, independent life as you age.
“Longevity is about maintaining the ability to move well and independently while enjoying life as you age (and of course living longer). Pilates helps people build sustainable movement patterns that support that goal,” explains Daisy Zhang, Pilates instructor and founder of Mind Pilates.
Since every Pilates move is grounded in spinal alignment, breath and core stability, you’re honing in on the foundations that typically erode with age—neuromuscular control, joint health and postural integrity.
“Pilates is one of the most intelligent movement systems ever designed and after more than four decades of teaching it, I believe that more deeply now than when I first began. What makes it extraordinary for longevity is that it works with the body rather than against it. Unlike high-impact training that accumulates wear and tear over time, Pilates builds the body up,” explains Sherry L. Granader, ACE, AFAA, NETA, ACSM, ASDA, BBU, Pilates instructor at Club Pilates Southern Maryland. “Joseph Pilates called his method ‘Contrology’ for a reason. It is the conscious, deliberate control of movement.”
This control is exactly what keeps your joints mobile, your muscles strong and your nervous system sharp well into your golden years of life. The best part? Pilates has no age limit.
“I have taught clients in their 80s who moved better after six months of consistent practice than they had in years. That is the promise of this method, and it delivers,” Granader adds.

7 Best Longevity-Boosting Exercises, According To Pilates InstructorsBelow, instructors share their favorite longevity-boosting exercises to add to your routine.
1. Footwork on the reformer (2–3 Sets of 10 reps)Many Pilates sessions kick off with footwork on the reformer. According to Zhang, footwork helps boost functional lower-body strength, supporting everyday tasks like climbing stairs, getting up from a chair and walking. (Zhang also shares a mat modification if doing these exercises at home.)
- Lie flat on your back with your head on the headrest, shoulders relaxed and arms at your sides.
- Place your feet on the footbar. You’ll perform each set with your feet assuming a different position on the bar (toes, heels, then a Pilates V).
- Take a deep breath in.
- As you exhale, press the carriage away from the footbar.
- Inhale and use control as you bend your knees to return to the start position.
- Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 reps.
For this modification, go slow and focus on your form.
- Begin standing tall, feet shoulder-width apart.
- Place your hands on your hips or extend them ahead of you.
- Bend at the knees and hips to lower into a squat, descending until your thighs are parallel to the mat.
- Drive through your heels to return to standing, squeezing your glutes at the top of the movement.
- Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 reps.
Related: The #1 Pilates Workout Sequence That Builds Strength Beyond the Mat
2. Bridges (2–3 Sets of 8–10 Reps)This exercise helps build stronger glutes and a more mobile spine, which Zhang says directly translates to improved posture and reduced back pain as you age.
- Begin by lying flat on your back on the carriage with your head supported.
- Place your feet parallel and hip-width apart on the footbar and your arms at your sides, palms facing down.
- Take a deep breath in.
- As you exhale, press your feet into the footbar and lift your hips, peeling your spine off the carriage. Lift until your body is straight from shoulders to knees.
- Inhale as you hold for a moment.
- Exhale to lower with control.
- Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps.
For this modification, focus on peeling your spine off the mat rather than thrusting your hips up.
- Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the mat.
- Rest your arms at your sides, palms facing down.
- Press through your heels to lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from head to heels.
- Squeeze your glutes at the top, holding for 2 counts.
- Slowly roll back down.
- Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps.
Related: The Exact 15-Minute Pilates Routine Instructors Recommend for Beginners
3. Rowing Series (2 Sets of 8–10 Reps)The rowing series is completed on the reformer with the straps, helping you move your body through a variety of upper-body positions that strengthen the upper back, open up the chest and retrain your posture, Zhang says.
“Rounded shoulders and a forward head position are seen in people who sit at desks or look at phones for hours a day,” she explains. This exercise helps address exactly that.
- Sit on the carriage facing the straps, holding one in each hand.
- Extend your legs or slightly bend them for additional support.
- Extend your arms forward and maintain a tall chest.
- Take a deep breath in.
- As you exhale, row the straps in toward your body, bending your elbows.
- Inhale as you extend your arms and return to the start position.
- Perform 2 sets of 8 to 10 reps.
- Sit tall on a mat with your legs extended straight out in front of you.
- Loop a resistance band around your feet, holding an end in each hand.
- Sit tall and brace your core.
- Start with your arms extended at about chest level.
- Pull the band toward your ribs, bending at the elbows and keeping them close to the sides of your body.
- Use control to extend your arms back to the start position.
- Perform 2 sets of 8 to 10 reps.
Most of us spend a good part of the day sitting, which can cause the spinal extensors to weaken, leading to rounded posture.
“The Pilates exercise ‘Swimming’ strengthens the muscles along the back body that help us stand upright and maintain spinal support as we age and can be done daily without the need for a pool,” explains Billingsley.
- Begin by lying face-down with your arms reaching overhead in a wide “V.”
- Extend your legs behind you.
- Lift your head, chest, arms and legs off the mat.
- Draw your abdominals gently away from the mat.
- Alternate between lifting the opposite arm and leg, mimicking a freestyle swimming motion.
- Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 slow breaths or 30 to 60 seconds.
The roll-up with spinal extension is an original variation Billingsley created that supports mobility, flexibility, core strength and spinal articulation.
- Begin by lying flat on your back with either a cushion or yoga block placed behind your shoulder blades. Optionally, use a second pillow to support your head.
- Reach both arms overhead.
- Take a deep breath in.
- As you exhale, slowly roll up from the mat, one vertebrae at a time.
- Once you reach a seated posture, reach forward, flexing your spine and stretching the hamstrings.
- Inhale as you lengthen your spine upright and sweep both arms overhead and behind you.
- Open your chest and gently extend the spine, pressing your fingertips into the ground a few inches behind your pelvis.
- Breathe out as you flow into a forward fold.
- Roll back up to a seated position.
- Slowly return to the mat with control.
- Perform 5 to 8 reps.
“Spinal extension is the antidote to the forward-flexed posture that dominates modern life and accelerates aging. Swan prep strengthens the erector spinae, opens the chest and counteracts kyphosis beautifully,” Granader tells Parade.
- Start by lying face-down with your hands under your shoulders, elbows close to the sides of your body and legs hip-distance apart.
- Breathe in to prepare.
- As you exhale, lightly press through your hands and lengthen through the crown of your head as you lift your chest off the mat. Make sure your abs are gently lifted.
- Hold for one breath.
- Lower with control.
- Perform 2 to 3 sets of 6 to 8 reps.
According to Granader, the single-leg stretch requires coordination between the opposite limbs while maintaining spinal stability.
“[This is] exactly the kind of cross-pattern neurological challenge that protects against falls and cognitive decline,” Granader tells Parade.
- Begin by lying flat on your back.
- Curl your head and shoulders up.
- Draw your right knee in toward your chest.
- Place your right hand on your ankle and your left hand on your knee.
- Lengthen your left leg out to a 45-degree angle.
- Inhale as you switch legs.
- Then, exhale as you switch again.
- Perform 2 sets of 8 to 10 alternating reps. (Each side counts as 1 rep.)
By developing a regular Pilates practice, you’re taking a major step in the right direction in your own path toward longevity.

From 'Jaws' Extra to Police Chief—He Has a Surprising Answer About Sharks
Nearly 50 years after playing one of the kids behind Jaws' infamous fake shark fin prank, Jonathan Searle is now the real-life police chief on Martha's Vineyard. And unlike Chief Brody's fictional nightmare, Searle says the island has had exactly this many shark attacks during his tenure: "Zero. Never."
Searle said Cape Cod has had “a couple of incidents,” but Martha’s Vineyard has seen only one shark-related bite in recent memory — and it involved someone actively fishing for sharks. “The only shark bite that we had was someone fishing for sharks and caught one,” he told Remind Magazine. “It was hooked, and they were dragging him into the surf. The shark slid into him riding a wave and accidentally bit him in the leg.”
Despite being considered one of the most terrifying films of 1975, Jaws ultimately drew even more attention to Martha’s Vineyard. Searle recalls “huge influx” during the 50th celebration last summer, plus the population has also grown.
“Our population now is, I’m guessing, two and a half times what it was back in the seventies, and a lot of year-round population,” he shared.
Searle recalled his time as a local extra on Steven Spielberg’s Jaws as “a great summer,” saying they were paid, fed, and spent their days at the beach. He and his brother Steven, both island locals, even appeared on camera during a scene involving a prank with a fake shark fin. Jonathan joked in the film that Steven made him do it, and the pair were ultimately pulled from the water during filming.
Days at the beach during the shoot weren't always sunny and warm. “From day one, they really had experienced it all: rain, fog, wind. New England weather is famous for its inconsistencies,” extra actor Susan Murphy shared in the book, “Jaws: Memories from Martha’s Vineyard”, Martha’s Vineyard Magazine reports.
“It’s rainy one day, followed by three days of fog, then maybe a little bit of sun,” she shared. “But when you’re spending as much money as Universal was to film a scene that’s supposed to look like a fun, warm, sunny beach, and all you’re getting is clouds and cold wind for weeks on end, you’ve got serious problems. They had no choice but to keep all the extras and crew on the beach each day and pick away at whatever shots they could get because after July 1, thousands of real tourists would be arriving. Waiting until September certainly wasn’t going to work because all the kids they needed for the scene would be back in school.”
