F1 News: Carlos Sainz's Saudi Arabian Media Absence Clarified By Ferrari

Thu, 03/07/2024 - 7:00am

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz was absent on the opening day of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend on Wednesday due to illness. As a result, he was unable to perform his media duties ahead of the GP, scheduled for Saturday, 9 March, at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ferrari's Carlos Sainz missed Saudi Arabian Grand Prix media duties due to illness, amid speculation about his future as his contract expires after 2024.
  • Sainz's absence comes after a strong performance in Bahrain, where he finished third behind Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
  • McLaren anticipates a competitive showing at the Saudi Arabian GP, focusing on high-speed circuit strengths.

As Formula 1 gears up for its next event in Saudi Arabia, Sainz had to step away from his media obligations as reports indicated he was returning to his hotel. Here's what the team stated:

“Carlos is not feeling well and has gone back to the hotel."

Before the 2024 season began, Sainz had revealed that he would treat the year as a stage to prove himself, as his contract with the Maranello outfit expires after the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Red Bull Press Image

His seat will be going to Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who entered the final season with the Brackley outfit after an association of 11 years. Rumors of Sainz talking to Red Bull, Mercedes, and Audi (after it takes over Sauber in 2026) for the subsequent seasons have been doing the rounds.

Speaking of the Saudi Arabian GP, Sainz expressed a few days ago about the high chances of McLaren finishing the race with flying colors, given that the Papaya team performed excellently on high-speed circuits last year. He said:

“Let’s see the differences first.

“We go with this new 2024 car so it will be a bit of a surprise for everyone to see where we are.

“I expect the cars like the McLaren, last year they were very good in high speed circuits, to be competitive there but you know our car has also improved in the high speed so hopefully we can be also stronger.”

F1 News: Lewis Hamilton Comments On Adrian Newey Move To Mercedes - "Not My Decision"

Thu, 03/07/2024 - 6:00am

Lewis Hamilton has commented on the rumour that Adrian Newey, the CTO of Red Bull and the perceived mastermind behind Red Bull's current-regulation cars, could be unhappy at the team amid the drama surrounding Christian Horner.

Key Takeaways

  • Lewis Hamilton commented on rumours that Red Bull's Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey may be unhappy at the team amid the drama surrounding team principal Christian Horner.
  • There are allegations of misconduct against Horner and a reported "civil war" within Red Bull over control of the technology division, creating a mess of a situation.
  • While Newey leaving Red Bull is speculation, it's unlikely top teams like Mercedes or Ferrari would turn him down if he wanted to move.

Red Bull Content Pool

Red Bull has been caught in the wildfire surrounding its team principal Christian Horner and the allegations surrounding him currently. While the official independent investigation into the alleged misconduct initially put the ordeal to bed, it has since erupted once again when a leak of purported evidence of the misconduct was shared with key names within Formula 1.

This story, based on unverified evidence, has been bigger than the start of the 2024 season itself, and has affected many in the paddock, especially those within the ranks of the Milton Keynes squad. To make matters worse, there's also rumoured to be a civil war brewing within the team as leaders fight for control over the technology division of the energy drinks company. Like adding potassium to water, this has turned into a fizzing, fiery mess of a story.

It's no surprise then, that questions are forming around whether key members of Red Bull will want to continue. After all, being connected to these stories, true or not, would be disconcerting for many.

It's worth saying at this point that Adrian Newey thinking about leaving the team is all speculation after stories surrounding exit clauses and other people's opinions. But with Mercedes apparently taking the aerodynamicist's focus, the 7-time world champion was asked about this in an interview with Autosport.

“In terms of Adrian, having worked within the team, I know obviously Adrian gets all the praise for everybody's work.

“I know he's a huge part of it, of course. But I know there are so many engineers in the background who are a huge part of developing the team and the car that they have. It's not down to one person.

"It's not my decision. But I'm competing against him this year at the moment, so I can't really talk about next year just yet."

Hamilton will be moving to Ferrari for the 2025 season, and after several teases from Newey regarding a move to the Scuderia to serve under Fred Vasseur and alongside Lewis, a driver he's always wanted to work with, fans will be keen to watch as this story unfolds. But for someone as talented as Adrian Newey, it's highly unlikely that Mercedes, Ferrari, or any team on the grid, in fact, would say no.

Thu, 03/07/2024 - 5:21am

The 2024 F1 Academy season is upon us with the season-opener in Saudi Arabia this weekend.

The F1 Academy has unveiled its comprehensive plan for the 2024 season, blending the ambition of young talents with the seasoned expertise of returning competitors. This year's championship sees a significant transformation, with each of the ten Formula 1 teams nominating a driver to represent them, donning their respective liveries. This strategic move not only bridges the gap between the F1 Academy and the pinnacle of motorsport but also elevates the stature of the series.

Here is everything you need to know about the all-female racing series.

2024 F1 Academy Calendar

The 2024 F1 Academy calendar consists of seven race weekends, which all coincide with the Formula One race weekends. Kicking off the season is Saudi Arabia this weekend before they head to Miami in early May for the next round.

March 7-9: Saudi Arabia

May 3-5: Miami

June 21-23: Barcelona

August 23-25: Netherlands

September 20-22: Singapore

November 29 - December 1: Qatar

December 6-8: Abu Dhabi

Race Weekend Format

The race weekend will begin with one Free Practice session which will last for 40 minutes. Following the practice session will be a 30 minute Qualifying session. The drivers fastest laps in Qualifying will determine the starting grid for Race 1, and the drivers second fastest laps will determine the line-up for Race 2.

Each race will be for 30 minutes.

Points System

Two points will be awarded for each driver who takes pole position for Races 1 and 2.

The top 10 in both Race 1 and 2 will be awarded 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 points, respectively.

Similarly to Formula One, the driver who has the fastest lap in both Race 1 and 2 will receive 1 point, so long as they finish in the top 10.

Super Licence Points

In a bid to propel the drivers up through the driving ranks, 2024 has seen the introduction of Super Licence points.

At the end of the season, the top 5 drivers in the standings will receive FIA Super Licence points in the following format.

Winner - 10 points

Second place - 7 points

Third place - 5 points

Fourth place - 3 points

Fifth place - 1 point

Where To Watch

One of the main criticisms of the inaugural 2023 season was the fact that it was not broadcast making it difficult for fans to keep up with the on-track action. As part of the F1 Academy being closer aligned with Formula One in 2024, the all-female racing series will now be broadcast on various different platforms. The F1 Academy has shared how to watch from different locations.

F1 News: Lewis Hamilton Reveals Measured Take On Abu Dhabi 2021 - "Wasn't His Fault"

Thu, 03/07/2024 - 4:55am

As the 2024 Formula 1 season continues into its second race weekend, the anticipation of how the teams perform on a different track is palpable. However, the echoes of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix still linger, with Lewis Hamilton's recent comments reigniting discussions around the contentious events that unfolded during the championship-deciding race.

Key takeaways

  • Lewis Hamilton doesn't blame Max Verstappen for the controversial 2021 championship finale
  • Hamilton understands why Red Bull extended Verstappen's contract, but wonders about his future plans amid rumours of him looking for an exit
  • Excitement builds for Saudi Arabian GP to see if any team can challenge the pace of Verstappen's RB20

Mercedes F1

The 2021 season witnessed an intense battle for the Drivers' Championship between Hamilton and Max Verstappen. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the season, was set to be the ultimate decider. However, a late safety car period and subsequent decisions by the race director sparked outrage and controversy, ultimately leading to Verstappen claiming his first World Championship title.

In a recent interview with Autosport, the Mercedes driver addressed the events of that day, offering a measured and insightful perspective.

"I wouldn't say I'm surprised, because he's a great driver," he said, referring to Verstappen's actions during the pivotal moments of the race. "I think even we spoke back then. Max in that moment, he did what he had to do, it was nothing on him, it was the sport that let us down."

Hamilton's words reflect a level of sportsmanship, recognising - as everyone should - that Verstappen's actions were within the bounds of the rules as they stood at the time. However, he also acknowledges the larger systemic issues that marred the integrity of the race's conclusion.

"And I think that wasn't his fault. Me, in his position, I would have done exactly the same thing. So there's no issues there," Hamilton added, further cementing his stance that Verstappen should not bear the brunt of the criticism for his role in the events.

Red Bull Content Pool

Looking ahead to the future, Hamilton touched upon Verstappen's recent contract extension with Red Bull, stating:

"I think if you run a team, you want to have the best driver, and you want to be the team that's got the driver that brings in the eyeballs, brings the sponsorships, and he is one of those."

While acknowledging Verstappen's talents and value to the Red Bull team, Hamilton expressed curiosity about the Dutchman's long-term plans amid rumours of him potentially leaving the team after the drama surrounding it started ahead of this season.

"So I understand it, but it wouldn't make sense, I would say, for him. But it'll be interesting to see," he said.

As the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix approaches, fans will be keen to understand how the potent RB20 performs on a street circuit with faster corners compared to the previous Bahrain track. Can they be caught by the likes of Ferrari, who showed excellent pace, albeit with reliability issues, last weekend? Or maybe another team hidden in the mid-grid cluster can bounce forward. We're excited to find out.

F1 News: George Russell On Max Verstappen Mercedes Rumours - "Welcome A Challenge"

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 8:00pm

George Russell has responded to the rumours surrounding Max Verstappen possibly joining Mercedes, following the shock move of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari.

Key Takeaways:

  • Speculation about Max Verstappen's move to Mercedes has intensified after Lewis Hamilton's switch to Ferrari.
  • George Russell sees the potential addition of Verstappen to Mercedes as beneficial, emphasising the team's aim for the strongest lineup.
  • Russell is confident in his abilities to match up with Verstappen, citing his performance alongside Hamilton as evidence.

Mercedes Press Image

The F1 community is still reeling from Lewis Hamilton's unexpected switch to Ferrari, a move that has sent shockwaves through the sport. Hot on its heels is the rumour mill churning out news of Max Verstappen potentially transferring to Mercedes. This would position him as Hamilton's successor and George Russell's new teammate. Russell, currently with Mercedes, has openly welcomed the idea, pointing to the advantage of having formidable partners in a team. He explained in the Drivers Press Conference ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix:

"I think any team wants to have the best driver lineup possible. And right now, Max is the best driver on the grid, so if any team had a chance to sign Max, they would 100% be taking it."

However, Russell also acknowledged the complexities involved in such a potential move, given the intricate dynamics at play within Red Bull Racing and the broader F1 ecosystem.

"So I think the question is more on the other side, his side, and Red Bull's side.

"Obviously, there is so much going on there. We don't know what truly is going on behind closed doors. And ultimately, it's none of our business right now.

"Yes, I guess we'll be excited."

Despite the formidable reputation of Verstappen as a competitor, Russell is unwavering in his self-belief and readiness to compete at the highest level. Drawing on his experience with Hamilton, he stated:

"As I said last week in Bahrain, this is my third season now alongside Lewis. He’s the greatest driver of all time, and I feel like I've done a pretty good job alongside him.

"So whoever was to line up alongside me next year or in the years to come, I welcome anybody, I welcome a challenge. You always want to go against the best.

"But, ultimately, for me, I just focus on myself. I believe in myself. I believe I can beat anybody on the grid. And you have just got to have that mentality. So, as I said, having Lewis as my benchmark for the last couple of years has been a pretty good benchmark for sure."

F1 News: Christian Horner's Shrugs Off Toto Wolff's Max Verstappen Claims - "Long Season"

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 6:00pm

Christian Horner has addressed Toto Wolff's remarks regarding Max Verstappen's performance from a "different galaxy" during the Bahrain Grand Prix, indicating that he won't base the season's outcome on just one race. The Red Bull team boss stressed that with a lengthy season ahead, the Formula 1 grid is likely to eventually level out.

Key Takeaways:

  • Christian Horner addresses Toto Wolff's comments on Max Verstappen's Bahrain Grand Prix performance, noting that one race won't determine the season's outcome and expressing confidence in the Formula 1 grid leveling out over time.
  • Wolff's acknowledgment of Verstappen's dominance in the 2023 season is mentioned.
  • Horner remains cautious about drawing conclusions from Bahrain, expecting the field to converge and anticipating a challenging season ahead, with focus already on the next race in Jeddah.
Mercedes Press Image

Wolff's comments seem to resonate with the 2023 Formula 1 season, which saw sheer dominance from Max Verstappen, whose "meritocracy" was well appreciated by the Mercedes team boss.

The 2023 flavor was evident in Bahrain last weekend, where Verstappen proved victorious by pulling a 20+ second lead over his teammate Sergio Perez, who finished P2. When Horner was asked about the comments and the scene of Red Bull's dominance, he revealed a different opinion. Speaking to the media after the Bahrain GP, he said:

“I’ve been in this business too long to draw too many conclusions from a single race.

“It’s a fantastic start, we’ll enjoy this moment, a maximum point score, but it’s a long season.

“Many different venues, different challenges, different conditions, and what we saw in the testing is things that are closer now.

“We got it right this weekend, we took the right tyres into the race, we executed a perfect race with both cars, and we got a great finish. But I think that it will converge.”

Speaking further about the grid converging, Horner added:

“It’s what we’re here to do. It’s why we’re all here, is to go racing.

“And I’m sorry that it wasn’t a more entertaining race for you today, but that is the result of the team doing its job and producing an incredible car.

“Now, we have a sample of one race. I have the feeling that the field is going to concertina this year, so I don’t think you can take anything for granted out of this one race on a specific surface, specific conditions, and I have a feeling that this season will be a lot more challenging on track than last season.

“But, it’s the best possible start and our minds are already thinking about five days’ time in Jeddah.”

F1 News: Toto Wolff Lays Out Mercedes Plan For Saudi Arabian GP - "More Consistent Weekend"

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 5:07pm

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff spoke of the frustrated weekend faced by the team over cooling issues on the W15 F1 car in Bahrain before laying out the plan for a more consistent weekend in Saudi Arabia on the Jeddah street circuit.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff addresses cooling issues with the W15 F1 car in Bahrain, aiming for a more consistent performance in Jeddah's street circuit.
  • Drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell faced cooling problems during the race, impacting their finishes.
  • Williams, a Mercedes customer team, also encountered cooling issues with their FW46, emphasizing the need for Mercedes to refine their approach for the upcoming race in Jeddah.

Mercedes Press Image

Drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell had to endure cooling issues on their W15s in race conditions, and thus, they finished the opening race in P7 and P5, respectively. Wolff claimed that the duo lost around six-tenths of a second per lap due to the problem.

Williams, a customer team of Mercedes, also encountered cooling issues with their FW46, indicating the necessity for the Brackley-based team to devise a more robust plan of action in Jeddah.

With the problem masking the W15's true potential, Wolff hinted that the coming weekend is another opportunity to learn more about the car, with the aim of having a more "consistent weekend". He told the media:

“Our race in Bahrain was best described as underwhelming.

“We were hopeful of a stronger showing after our performance in practice and qualifying.

“Both drivers were pleased with the balance earlier in the weekend, and the more stable platform provided by the W15.

“Unfortunately on Saturday evening, our cooling performance didn’t match our predictions. That forced us into management mode early on, which had the knock-on impact of reducing tyre temperatures below optimum.

“That cost us the opportunity to show something closer to our true potential. It was a frustrating way to start the season but one we will learn from.

“We’ve got an opportunity to take a step forward immediately. Jeddah is a street track with a lot of high-speed content.

“It will be good to continue our learning with the new car on a very different circuit to Bahrain. We will be aiming for a more consistent weekend and to understand our true performance relative to the rest of the grid."

F1 News: Adrian Newey Delivers Blow To Rivals - "RB20 Well Suited To All Circuits"

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 3:20pm

Red Bull's chief technical officer and aero expert Adrian Newey has expressed that the team's 2024 challenger, the RB20, is not a concept that has ventured into unknown territory but, it is a "third generation evolution" of the 2022 car, the RB18, that helped Max Verstappen win the first title in the ground effect era.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull's Adrian Newey describes the RB20 as a "third-generation evolution" of the RB18, emphasizing its continuity despite visual changes.
  • The RB20's design, reminiscent of Mercedes's W14, sparks curiosity about potential new concepts.
  • Newey clarifies that while there are visible changes for aerodynamic gains, the RB20's core architecture remains largely unchanged. The team focuses on creating a versatile car, particularly aiming to improve performance on maximum downforce street tracks after a disappointing showing in Singapore last year.

Red Bull Press Image

With the Milton Keynes outfit winning 21 out of the 22 Grands Prix last season, courtesy of Verstappen and his RB19, it was expected that the 2024 car would be similar-looking to the 2023 car.

Surprisingly though, when Red Bull launched the RB20 a few weeks ago, the car's design philosophy looked similar to Mercedes's outgoing W14 F1 car, which wasn't particularly famous for winning races.

Thus, raising several eyebrows, many were curious to know about the RB20 and if Red Bull had experimented with a new concept while veering off into an unknown territory. Revealing the real picture, Newey confirmed that the RB20 is an evolution of the old concept, as a major part of the car underneath the external bodywork remains the same.

He also emphasized that there are subtle bits on the car that have helped improve performance but have gone unnoticed by onlookers. When asked on the F1 Nation podcast if the RB20 was a step into the unknown compared to the outgoing RB19, he answered:

“No, not at all.

“I mean, the underlying architecture of the car is the third generation evolution of what started as RB18.

“Where we carry everything, apart from the radiators, they’ve changed, but apart from that, the layout of the front suspension, the rear suspension, the gearbox, casing, et cetera, it’s a third evolution of RB18.

“The bits that are visible, and they’ve obviously caused quite a lot of attention, obviously, we’re pursuing aerodynamic gains there, but the visual change is actually much, much larger than the performance change you get from that and there are other much more subtle bits, that people haven’t noticed, that are probably responsible for a bigger gain.”

After missing out on that one victory in Singapore last year, Newey revealed that the primary goal of the team was to design an all-rounder car to improve performance on maximum downforce street circuits. He added:

“That’s what we’ve tried to achieve, is a car that is reasonably well suited to all circuits.

“I think, typically, last year are the circuits that we had less of an advantage on were the maximum downforce street tracks.

“Singapore, obviously, we made famously made a bit of a mess of, underperformed to what we could have achieved – I think we could have certainly achieved podiums there had we got our act together a bit better.

“But it certainly is true to say that those circuits are the ones that we probably have less advantage on, but as long as we’re not disastrous on them, then maybe that’s good enough.”

F1 News: Alex Albon Worries For 2024 Season - "They Will Remain In the Top 10"

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 1:00pm

Alex Albon has expressed concerns about Williams' prospects for the 2024 F1 season after a disappointing opener in Bahrain. The Thai driver warned that the top teams would likely maintain their advantage throughout the year.

Key Takeaways:

  • Alex Albon worried about Williams' competitiveness in 2024 season
  • Suggested top 5 teams will remain comfortably ahead of midfield rivals
  • Cooling issues and strategy errors hampered Williams' race in Bahrain

Despite a respectable 13th place in qualifying, the 2024 Formula 1 season got off to a frustrating start for Alex Albon and Williams in Bahrain. The Thai driver could only manage 15th in the race, prompting worries that scoring points consistently may prove extremely difficult this year.

In a sobering assessment speaking to Motorsport.com, Albon indicated the gap to the leading teams could leave Williams adrift in the lower midfield:

"Everyone has made a step, but it's all relative. At the moment the top five teams are further ahead than the rest. As long as they remain consistent and don't have technical problems, they will remain in the top ten."

The 27-year-old felt Williams were only really competitive in the opening stint in Bahrain before fading. Cooling issues similar to those afflicting Mercedes hampered their race pace.

"It's partly due to the fact that we drove less due to the problems during the test days. We were only driving in the clean air before and the engine was now overheating very quickly. We lost a lot of time because we had to scale back the engine and had to keep their distance from the competition," Albon explained.

He also felt Williams missed opportunities with their strategy, pitting too late and losing valuable track position. Electronic gremlins hampering their ability to manage key systems like cooling added to their woes.

“If the engine overheats, that should be the first thing. Problems with fuel and overheating should be the priority,” Alex said speaking on aspects of the car to improve. "The team asked me to make adjustments, but there was an alarm on the screen. I couldn't do anything. If you can't do anything about the overheating problems, it's very frustrating."

Albon's comments suggest Williams may face an uphill battle to regularly challenge for the lower points-paying positions barring a major step forward in development. If this is true, it could be a very long season for the Grove-based team.

F1 News: Red Bull Announces Staggering Partnership Contract Extension

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 12:00pm

Red Bull has reportedly signed a record-breaking apparel deal ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with precision performance sportswear brand Castore, estimated to be worth over $200 million.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull has inked a groundbreaking apparel deal with Castore, reportedly valued at over $200 million, ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
  • The extended agreement will see Castore branding on the sportswear of Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, building upon their existing partnership.
  • Additionally, Castore's branding will be featured on the Red Bull Academy Programme for the 2024 F1 Academy season, as well as on the attire of three Red Bull drivers in the all-female series F1 Academy: Emely De Heus and sisters Amna and Hamda Al-Qubaisi.
Red Bull Content Pool

The agreement is actually an extension of its contract from last year and will involve the Manchester-based brand appearing on the sportswear of Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

In addition, the branding will also feature on the Red Bull Academy Programme for the 2024 F1 Academy season, apart from featuring on the attire of three Red Bull drivers in the all-female series F1 Academy, namely Emely De Heus and sisters Amna and Hamda Al-Qubaisi.

Speaking on the fruitful extension of their partnership, Castore co-founder Tom Beahon said in a statement:

“We’re thrilled to have expanded our partnership with Oracle Red Bull Racing.

"The length of this agreement demonstrates the trust they have in Castore to deliver products that help optimise the performance of the whole team and speaks to our commitment to Oracle Red Bull Racing’s goals to continue their charge to more wins and titles.”

Here's what Red Bull team principal Chrisitan Horner said about contract extension:

“From the start of our collaboration with Castore last year we knew we had found a partner whose commitment to innovation and advanced engineering matched our own and the trust we have in them to deliver performance improvement has only increased over the past 12 months and has led to this record-breaking new agreement.

"We’re also pleased that Castore’s faith in the team has extended to our activities in F1 Academy. That too is a ground-breaking initiative and having Castore on board to help our drivers in that series is a huge bonus.”

F1 News: Fernando Alonso Confronts Retirement - "If I Am Here It's Because I Want To Do Well"

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 11:30am

Fernando Alonso has addressed his future in Formula One, stating he needs to evaluate his motivation before committing beyond 2024. The Spaniard highlighted once again his desire to perform at the highest level if he does choose to continue racing.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fernando Alonso to assess motivation before deciding on F1 future
  • Wants to ensure he can give 100% commitment if he continues racing
  • Priorities personal decision before considering team options for 2025

As one of 12 drivers out of contract at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, Fernando Alonso has shed light on the factors he'll weigh up in determining whether to prolong his remarkable career. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 in Saudi Arabia, the 42-year-old Aston Martin driver explained he needs to feel fully motivated and able to dedicate himself entirely before considering another year on the grid.

"If I am here it's because I want to do well and first of all I need to speak with myself in order to commit," Alonso told Motorsport.com. "I enjoy racing. I love racing. It doesn't matter if I am fighting for a win, for a podium or P12. I dedicate myself 100% for a race and for a team."

The two-time world champion acknowledged he can't simply stay in F1 for enjoyment's sake, stressing his competitive desire to contribute at the highest level for whichever team he drives.

"To do a commitment for the future I need to make sure I can give 100% to that team. If not it would be too egoist from side to just sign and be in F1 just for fun."

Of course, there are personal factors the driver has to take into account, especially with the season being a record-breaking length with an intense travel schedule.

"How I feel, how I go through the first run of trips, planes, time zones differences, physically how I feel, how motivated is the main thing for me," he said.

While speculation has linked him to potential seats like Mercedes and now even Red Bull, the Spaniard is focused solely on making the right personal decision first before contemplating which team to target.

"First I need to make a personal commitment with myself to dedicate myself to dedicate a few more years. If I am willing to sacrifice again other things in life once I make the decision with myself then I try to see what is the best possibility out there.

"At the moment, we're not in that stage yet."

F1 News: Christian Horner Speaks Out On Sergio Perez's Future With Red Bull

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 11:00am

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has revealed that Sergio Perez could consider a contract extension with Red Bull beyond 2024 if he continues to "deliver" P2 finishes this season behind Max Verstappen.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull team principal Christian Horner suggests that Sergio Perez's consistent performance in securing second-place finishes behind Max Verstappen could lead to a contract extension beyond 2024.
  • Perez's role in supporting Verstappen's title defence is emphasized amid high demand for Red Bull's seat beside Verstappen for the next season, with expectations that Perez continues to back up his teammate.
  • Horner praises Perez's performance in the Bahrain Grand Prix, highlighting his swift overtaking from fifth on the grid and emphasizing the importance of winning races, regardless of the margin of victory.
Red Bull Content Pool

Horner suggested that Perez's efforts to secure second place and impede competitors from challenging teammate Max Verstappen in first place are in line with expectations for him in 2024. The team principal did not set a higher standard for the Mexican driver, such as winning a race.

Perez is one of the 13 drivers in Formula 1 whose contracts expire this year. Consequently, there is significant competition for the seat alongside Verstappen at Red Bull next year, making it a priority for Perez to support Verstappen's title defence.

When asked after the Bahrain GP if Perez has other targets to fulfill this year to secure his seat, Horner told the media:

“There’s no set criteria.

“He’s got to do enough to earn that seat and, days like today, he’s done exactly what he’s got to deliver.”

Horner also praised Perez for starting in P5 and swiftly overtaking rivals to finish behind Verstappen. When asked if the margin of victory has doubled for the Dutchman compared to last year, Horner said:

“Look, everything’s relative, isn’t it?

“Checo [Perez] came from P5, Max was obviously managing the race as many drivers are managing different tyres at different times.

“It’s not a question of how much you win by, it’s a question about winning. We won today, Max dominated the race and was in a class of his own.

“Checo drove an outstanding race as well, coming through the field from fifth on the grid. Fastest lap – I think the back end of the race was exaggerated by the offset of tyres that we carried in.

“I’m surprised that others didn’t carry softs into the race when it was clearly, in these conditions, the better tyre to have.”

F1 News: FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem Wanted To Prevent Las Vegas GP As Per Report

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 10:30am

Controversies continue to pour down on Formula 1, with the most recent one revolving once again, around FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Following allegations of purportedly influencing the results of the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, reports now suggest he attempted to obstruct the Las Vegas Grand Prix track from attaining Grade 1 status for hosting F1 races.

Key Takeaways:

  • FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem faces renewed controversy, accused of attempting to obstruct the Las Vegas Grand Prix track from obtaining Grade 1 status for hosting F1 races, following prior allegations of influencing the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix results.
  • A BBC report reveals a whistleblower's account of being instructed, allegedly by their manager at Ben Sulayem's behest, to find artificial faults in the Las Vegas Grand Prix street circuit to prevent its homologation for hosting Grand Prix races.
  • Questions arise about Ben Sulayem's motives amid tensions between Formula 1 owner Liberty Media and the FIA, with the Las Vegas Grand Prix being a pivotal event for promoting the sport globally, despite attempts to extract more money from F1 by the FIA.
Red Bull Content Pool

As per a report by BBC, a whistleblower has revealed being asked by their manager ahead of the inaugural event, at the behest of the FIA president, to cancel the homologation of the Las Vegas Grand Prix street circuit by finding artificial faults in it so it could not be allotted the license to host Grand Prix races.

The shocking report has raised several questions about Ben Sulayem's intentions if the allegations are found to be true. After all, the race in Las Vegas was the first one to be fully hosted and managed by Formula 1 owner Liberty Media.

To delve further into the report, as per the whistleblowers' accounts, the instructions provided by their manager could not be complied with, since they yielded no findings that could hinder the circuit from obtaining its Grade 1 status.

The fresh claims come after a report was which was released on Monday by the BBC in which an FIA whistleblower alleges that Ben Sulayem intervened to ensure a penalty was imposed on Fernando Alonso during the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The BBC has reportedly obtained a report submitted to the FIA’s ethics committee by FIA compliance officer Paolo Basarri, which contains details from whistleblowers regarding two incidents.

Here's what BBC has to further state about the matter concerning the Las Vegas Grand Prix:

"It is not clear why Ben Sulayem would wish for FIA officials to refuse to certify the Las Vegas track.

"The race was a poster event for F1, and commercial rights holders Liberty Media had invested at least £500m in the event in the hope of using it to promote the sport in the US and across the globe.

"But the backdrop to Las Vegas, the penultimate race of last season, was two years of tension between Liberty Media and the FIA, in which Ben Sulayem on numerous occasions was keen to extract more money from F1 for the FIA.

"The contract between the two parties sees the commercial rights holder pay the FIA about $40m a year to perform its duties in legislating F1."

F1 News: Daniel Ricciardo Reveals "Private Briefing" With Yuki Tsunoda After Bahrain Clash

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 10:00am

Visa Cash App RB driver Daniel Ricciardo has spoken out about a "private briefing" he held with teammate Yuki Tsunoda following a contentious moment at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The incident, which occurred post-race, has since been resolved between the two.

Key Takeaways

  • Ricciardo and Tsunoda resolved tensions after a near-miss on the cooldown lap at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
  • The clash stemmed from Tsunoda's dissatisfaction with a team order to change positions during the race.
  • The teammates' discussion aimed to rebuild trust and ensure smooth cooperation for future races.

Red Bull Press Image

The Formula 1 season kicked off with a stir within the RB team, as Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda experienced a tense moment during the cooldown lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix. Tsunoda, irked by a race strategy that favoured Ricciardo, expressed his displeasure through a risky manoeuvre that brought the teammates dangerously close. This act led Ricciardo to publicly critique Tsunoda's maturity, hinting at underlying tensions within the team.

As the F1 circus moved to Saudi Arabia for the next grand prix, Ricciardo shared insights into a private meeting held with Tsunoda. This "private briefing," as Ricciardo termed it, was crucial in clearing the air and setting a cooperative tone for the rest of the season. The Australian driver acknowledged his own public outburst but emphasised the importance of resolving such issues internally, away from the media's gaze. He commented to Sky F1:

“I obviously said a few things on the radio and I obviously know that everything gets broadcast, so someone is going to pick it up, so I said a few things but I also tried to save it for the briefing as well.

“I also know as soon as you put the helmet on and also at the end of a race, yeah there’s some frustrations, you are also a bit exhausted. So you can maybe do things which are maybe a little bit out of character, so I try to take these things into account as well.

“But also, it was something for us afterwards. I think enough got put out there to the public but it was important that we spoke after the race. After our technical briefing we then had a private briefing and just cleared the air.

“That was important for Yuki and I to do it and also for the team to know we’re not going to have problems moving forward. It’s race one and I think that’s what we needed to do, and leave that room and be like ‘alright, it’s done’, Saudi here we come.”

Red Bull Press Image

In response to questions about his trust in Tsunoda going forward, Ricciardo expressed confidence. He emphasised the value of their candid conversation in fostering a sense of trust and understanding. Acknowledging the pressures and challenges inherent in F1 racing, Ricciardo pointed out that such incidents, while regrettable, are not uncommon and can serve as learning opportunities for all involved.

“Yeah we have to and that’s why I think if we just kind of let it go, maybe there’s still these questions or doubts.

“That’s why I think it was so important for us to, once the helmet was off and we got out of our race suit, we sat in the room and we talked very openly together.

“So moving forward there is trust. I think also, there’s a lot, probably with the in-lap - that was that, but the race situation, these things happen. It’s not the first time there’s been a bit of a delay with a driver swap.

“We do have new people on the pit wall and everything. It was also something that can happen in race one. So I wanted to try and take that into account. We’re not perfect yet.

“So all these little things make us come here with no issues.”

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 9:45am

Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff has recently commented on the speculation surrounding Max Verstappen's potential move to Mercedes post-2024. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 ahead of the Saudi Arabian GP, Wolff said "there is no reason now for Max to leave Red Bull anytime soon, but we'll see what happens."

Key Takeaways:

  • Max Verstappen's Red Bull contract reportedly includes an exit clause linked to Helmut Marko's departure.
  • Recent tensions within Red Bull Racing have been accentuated by Jos Verstappen's critiques of the team environment under Christian Horner.
  • Mercedes is reportedly eyeing Verstappen as a possible successor to Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari in 2025.

Mercedes Press Image

The future of Max Verstappen with Red Bull Racing remains a subject of intense speculation, particularly in light of internal team dynamics and external challenges. Amidst this, Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff has shed some light on the situation, subtly acknowledging the competitive nature of the driver market without dismissing the possibility of future developments.

Speaking with Sky Sports F1 ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Wolff commented:

"The market is very interesting. For a driver the most important thing is to be with whoever is fastest, and there is no reason now for Max to leave Red Bull anytime soon. But we'll see what happens."

The intrigue around Verstappen's tenure at Red Bull has been fuelled by revelations of an exit clause in his contract, contingent on the departure of his close confidant, Helmut Marko. This clause introduces an element of uncertainty regarding Verstappen's commitments, especially in the context of recent controversies involving team principal Christian Horner.

Tensions have been further stirred by comments from Jos Verstappen, Max's father, who has voiced concerns over the team's atmosphere under Horner's stewardship. These concerns have been amplified by allegations against Horner, which, despite being addressed through an internal investigation by Red Bull, have persisted due to the circulation of alleged communications.

The situation has led to speculation about Verstappen's future, especially with Mercedes potentially in the picture as a new home for the three-time champion.

F1 Interested In Red Bull's 220MPH Drone For Filming During Races

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 9:30am

Red Bull showcased incredible footage from a high-speed drone during a filming day, sparking F1's interest in potentially using the technology for race week coverage. However, there are significant challenges to overcome before implementation.

Key takeaways:

  • Red Bull's 220mph 'Drone 1' captured impressive footage at Silverstone
  • F1 has held talks with Red Bull and FIA about using drones at races
  • Safety concerns and restrictions around crowds pose major hurdles

Formula 1 has expressed keen interest in Red Bull's cutting-edge 'Drone 1' technology, which captured jaw-dropping footage of Max Verstappen's car during a recent filming day at Silverstone ahead of the season start. The futuristic drone, capable of hitting F1 speeds up to 220mph, was developed by Red Bull's Advanced Technologies division in collaboration with the Dutch Drone Gods company.

The spectacular overhead shots, tracking Verstappen's RB19 and RB20 for an entire lap, represent a significant leap forward from the limited drone footage previously seen in F1. However, as F1's director of Media and Broadcast, Dean Locke, explains, numerous challenges must be addressed before such technology could be widely implemented during grand prix weekends.

"It is really interesting what they have done with it," Locke acknowledged as quoted by Autosport. "But it was a private test, and they don't have to adhere to 90% of the rules that we have to."

While discussions have taken place between F1, Red Bull, and the FIA to explore the drone's potential applications, Locke highlighted critical safety concerns that could hinder its use, especially in the presence of spectator crowds.

"It is really quick, but you can't fly over a crowd, and you can't cross the track. Plus it doesn't have a moving head, so it's actually got to follow the car or be to the side. So it's actually quite tricky."

Locke highlighted that safety remains the utmost priority when considering the integration of drones at F1 events, where crowds can exceed 400,000 over a race weekend.

"The drone has been amazing for some sports but, for us, it's still very challenging. The speed of cars are still ridiculously fast and we have these events where we're getting over 400,000 people turning up over a weekend. So not flying over crowds is actually quite difficult now."

Red Bull content pool

He continued:

“We are also doing some work not only speed of drones, but just how light can we go? Can we go incredibly small? So if it does drop, it's doing very, very little damage opposed to the companies that always approach us with these huge things.”

Despite the obstacles, Locke suggested that certain track areas without spectators, such as the back straights in China and Austin, could potentially accommodate the Red Bull drone.

"There are places, like the backstraight in China, and the backstraight in Austin, there are a couple of areas where we plan to talk to them about it," he added.

Ralph Hogenbirk, the drone pilot known as Shaggy FPV, expressed uncertainty about the next steps but reiterated the technology's potential for live race coverage.

"We have no idea where we're actually going to go from here. But of course the goal is to have some livestream capabilities in an actual race or free practice or whatever. To combine this with a Formula 1 circuit in some kind of way. Because it's specifically built to do that."

F1 News: Ferrari Chief Sets High Expectations For Sainz And Leclerc In Saudi Arabian GP

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 9:00am

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has set the bar high for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at the forthcoming Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. During the team's race preview, Vasseur acknowledged the progress made over the winter, highlighting the reduced gap to the frontrunners.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fred Vasseur praised the team's offseason advancements, noting a closer qualifying gap, albeit with a still significant race pace difference to Max Verstappen.
  • The Saudi Arabian GP presents a new challenge with its smooth track and high-speed corners, testing the SF-24's aerodynamics and downforce.
  • Vasseur expects strong performances from Leclerc and Sainz, given their history at the Jeddah Corniche circuit.

Ferrari Press Image

Following an optimistic start to the season, Fred Vasseur has openly expressed his aspirations for his drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, in the upcoming race in Saudi Arabia. The commendations came after an encouraging showing at the season opener, where the team's efforts during the off-season seemed to pay dividends, evident in the reduced gap to the leaders, particularly noted during qualifying sessions.

Vasseur's comments shed light on the team's direction and morale.

"The first race of the season confirmed that we worked in the right direction over the winter. In Sakhir, we saw that the gaps in qualifying have closed up even more, although the distance to Max Verstappen in the race is still significant.

"However, it's encouraging that we have reduced that gap compared to last year, which is a good starting point."

Ferrari Press Image

The upcoming race in Jeddah is poised to be a litmus test for Ferrari's SF-24, with its distinct track characteristics, notably the smooth surface and high-speed corners, expected to test the vehicle's aerodynamic efficiency and downforce. Vasseur's confidence in his drivers is buoyed by their previous performances at the Jeddah Corniche circuit, where both Leclerc and Sainz have shown commendable prowess. Vasseur added:

"In Jeddah we will face a completely different test and we want to check if the positive signs we have seen from the SF-24 in the past couple of weeks are repeated on this very different track.

"The track surface is very smooth so tyre degradation should be negligible, while for the first time we will deal with very high speed corners that will highlight the cars' downforce and aerodynamic efficiency.

"Charles and Carlos have always gone well at the Jeddah Corniche and I expect them to be front-runners again, although once again it will all be very close. They should be able to do well in both qualifying and the race."

F1 News: Valtteri Bottas Lays Out Contract Conditions For Mercedes Return

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 8:30am

Valtteri Bottas has specified his terms for a potential return to Mercedes, contingent on a long-term contract offer. The Finnish driver's current tenure with Sauber, now known as Stake F1, concludes at the end of 2024, opening up possibilities for the 2025 season.

Key Takeaways:

  • Valtteri Bottas is open to a Mercedes comeback but insists on a multi-year contract, rejecting short-term engagements.
  • Bottas asserts his willingness to adapt for a title-challenging opportunity, albeit without compromising his individuality.

Mercedes Press Image

Following Lewis Hamilton's announced departure from Mercedes to join Ferrari, speculation has arisen about who will take up the mantle alongside George Russell. Among the contenders, Valtteri Bottas emerges as a potential candidate, given his successful stint with Mercedes from 2017 to 2021, where he played a pivotal role in securing championship victories.

In an extensive interview with PlanetF1.com, Bottas addressed the rumours, humorously noting that he hasn't been contacted by Mercedes' team principal, Toto Wolff, regarding a reunion. With his contract at Sauber concluding after the 2024 season, Bottas is poised for negotiations, expressing openness to a Mercedes dialogue if it involves a long-term commitment. The Finnish driver commented:

“No, actually [haven't heard from Toto Wolff]! I think he’s been busy. Nothing so far!

“[I'd] only [return to Mercedes] if it was a lot more than a one-year contract.

“If it was a one-year deal, then it wouldn’t make sense for me. But, for long-term, of course there could be a discussion.”

Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff has remained adamant that he will not rush into deciding who will fill the spot left by Hamilton. Other names mentioned have been Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Alpine driver Esteban Ocon, Williams' Alex Albon, and most recently three-time champion Max Verstappen.

F1 News: Aston Martin Scoops Up Alpine Advisor - "Optimising Everything"

Wed, 03/06/2024 - 7:55am

Aston Martin Formula 1 team announced the acquisition of Bob Bell as its new Executive Director – Technical following his high-profile departure from Alpine. Bell will report directly to Team Principal Mike Krack and assume responsibility for Technical, Engineering and Performance functions.

Key takeaways:

  • Bob Bell joins Aston Martin as Executive Director – Technical from Alpine
  • Bell's exit adds to Alpine's leadership vacuum and poor start to 2024 season
  • Will oversee Technical, Engineering and Performance areas at Aston Martin

- Aston Martin Aramco media

The Aston Martin Formula 1 team has made a significant move by securing the services of Bob Bell as their new Executive Director – Technical. This appointment comes at a time when Bell has parted ways with Alpine, where he held an advisory role, adding to the French team's ongoing leadership turmoil and underwhelming on-track performance.

Bell's switch to Aston Martin marks another chapter in Alpine's ongoing turmoil, as the Enstone-based squad grapples with a leadership vacuum and underwhelming track performance. The 65-year-old Briton, who had been associated with Alpine (formerly Renault and Benetton) since the late 1990s, was the technical director during Fernando Alonso's title-winning years in 2005 and 2006.

"I am delighted to welcome Bob Bell to Aston Martin Aramco," expressed Team Principal Mike Krack. "This is a key appointment to ensure we are optimising everything we do as a team and focusing on the right performance areas.

"Bob's track record in the sport speaks for itself and his experience will help us continue to make steps forward on the exciting journey we are on."

Alpine's woes began last year with the ousting of team principal Otmar Szafnauer and sporting director Alan Permane, triggering a mass exodus of senior figures. Chief technical officer Pat Fry, CEO Laurent Rossi, and most recently, Technical Director Matt Harman, have all parted ways with the team.

The squad's dismal showing in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix only exacerbated the internal turmoil. Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon qualified at the very back of the grid, with Ocon finishing 17th and Gasly 18th – a worrying sign of regression for the French manufacturer.

In his new role at Aston Martin, Bell will report directly to Krack and "assume overall responsibility for the Technical, Engineering and Performance functions" within the Silverstone squad. Bell, whose involvement in Formula 1 dates back to 1982 when he joined McLaren, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating@

"I have been impressed by the progress Aston Martin Aramco has made in recent years. The opportunity to play my part in that journey is incredibly exciting and I look forward to working with the great technical leaders at Silverstone.

"The scale and ambition of this project is highly motivating. I am a racer, and I see the hunger and determination powering this team. I look forward to playing my part with Mike and the rest of the team," Bell added.
