Ollie Bearman's debut in Formula 1, standing in for Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari team, was no exception. Starting 11th on the grid at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Bearman not only maintained his position in the initial laps but also demonstrated aggressive yet calculated overtaking manoeuvres.

Charles Leclerc, Bearman's teammate for the weekend, couldn't help but express his admiration for the young driver's performance. In a post-race conversation with David Coulthard, Leclerc highlighted Bearman's immediate adjustment to the car's pace from the third free practice session, his near miss for Q3 in qualifying, and his impressive race day finish. The Monegasque driver said:

"He completely deserves it. He's done an incredible job. Already from FP3 he was straight on the pace. In qualifying he did a great job and missed Q3 by so little.

"Today he's been incredible. Seventh in your first race in F1 having only done FP3 in a new car is hugely impressive and I'm sure he's extremely proud.

"Everybody has noticed how talented he is and I'm sure it's just a matter of time before he's in F1."

Bearman's performance is notable not just for his final position but for the composure and maturity he displayed throughout the race. Competing against seasoned racers and amidst the high pressures of F1, Bearman's ability to stay focused, make decisive moves, and secure a commendable finish speaks volumes of his potential and readiness for the sport's top level.

The race itself saw a mix of outcomes, with Max Verstappen taking the top spot, followed by Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc, who secured the fastest lap. Bearman's seventh-place finish places him in the spotlight, not just as a temporary substitute but as a promising talent likely to make a significant impact in the future of Formula 1.

Saudi Arabian GP Results: Max Verstappen Wins In Jeddah

Sat, 03/09/2024 - 12:28pm

Max Verstappen won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix under the lights of the Jeddah circuit. Joining the Red Bull driver on the podium were his teammate Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc who crossed the line in second and third place, respectively.

Lap 1: Pierre Gasly was forced to retire his Alpine A524 after reporting gearbox issues on the formation lap.

Ollie Bearman, who is standing in for Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari, had a fantastic start on his F1 debut. Starting from 11th on the grid, he remained in position on the opening laps and was putting in some moves to make overtake attempts.

George Russell was heard telling his Mercedes team that Lando Norris had a false start, however, this has not been clarified by the Stewards yet.

Lap 7: Lance Stroll clipped the wall at Turn 21 and subsequently crashed into the barrier at Turn 22. The Canadian driver was thankfully okay and walked away from the crash. A safety car was then brought out leading to a flurry of early pitstops.

Penalty: However, bad news for Sergio Perez who was handed a five second penalty for an unsafe release in the pit lane. (Lap 15)

Penalty: Kevin Magnussen was handed a ten-second penalty for causing a collision with Alex Albon. The Danish driver did not give Albon enough space at Turn 4 leaving damage to the latter's front wing. (Lap 15)

Penalty: Lap 22- Magnussen is handed another 10-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage on Yuki Tsunoda.

Lap 30: Yuki Tsunoda almost got past Magnussen in the fight for 12th but the Haas driver didn't give up easy and took the place back straight away. Making the most of the battle in front of him, Esteban Ocon took the opportunity to overtake Tsunoda as well.

Lap 34: Albon was next to overtake Tsunoda as the battle towards the back of the grid intensified.

Lap 42: Sauber suffered from yet another horrific pit stop. After Bottas had a 52 second stop in Bahrain, Guanyu now stops for an excruciating amount of time.

Lap 49: Daniel Ricciardo had a spin out at the back of the pack but thankfully is able to avoid colliding with the wall and gets back to racing before causing issues for the rest of the grid.

F1 News: Helmut Marko Responds To Mercedes Offer

Sat, 03/09/2024 - 11:55am

Red Bull Racing's Helmut Marko has addressed the offer extended by Mercedes' team principal Toto Wolff. Amidst swirling rumours and an unfolding power struggle within the Red Bull team, Marko's position has seemingly become the pivot around which the future of the team could turn. Erik van Haren of De Telegraaf brings light to Marko's response.

"That is not an issue at the moment. But fortunately they are not much further established in the paddock... Max still has a contract until 2028, but Toto Wolff says that contracts do not mean much in Formula 1," Marko stated (translated by Google).

This development comes on the heels of Wolff's open invitation to Marko. The Mercedes chief, in a display of strategic camaraderie or perhaps cunning mischief, had previously expressed his willingness to welcome Marko into the Mercedes fold, especially in the wake of internal discord at Red Bull.

Wolff's offer came after Marko's sudden departure from the Jeddah Corniche Circuit yesterday with questions arising over a possible suspension. With the team caught in a tumultuous power struggle, Wolff's comments add another layer to the ongoing saga.

"If the team gets rid of Marko, it will certainly be a loss for Red Bull and the team," Toto told ORF at the time. "We miss our old mascot (Niki Lauda), so we just take Helmut with us. He's the right age. He just doesn't have a red cap, but he can join us."

Now, of course, Marko has confirmed that he will be staying with Red Bull until the end of his contract - an outcome that Max was very pleased with.

Lance Stroll's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix came to an abrupt end after a collision. The Aston Martin driver encountered trouble on the 7th lap, resulting in a premature exit from the race.

Key Takeaways:

  • Lance Stroll's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was cut short due to a crash on Lap 7.

  • With Stroll out, Aston Martin's hopes now rest on Fernando Alonso to score points, who is currently in seventh place.

- Aston Martin on X

Lance Stroll, the Aston Martin racer, met with an unfortunate incident that led to his early retirement from the race. On the seventh lap, Stroll experienced a mishap at Turn 21, clipping the wall and subsequently crashing into the barriers at Turn 22, marking a sudden and disappointing end to his race day ambitions.

The incident had immediate repercussions, with the race officials deploying the safety car to manage the situation, thereby altering the dynamics of the race. This triggered a strategic dash for the pits, as teams scrambled to adjust their strategies in light of the unfolding situation. Stroll, after the crash, was quick to communicate with his team that he was okay.

The focus of Aston Martin now shifts entirely to Fernando Alonso, the two-time world champion, to bring home points.

F1 News: Helmut Marko Confirms Red Bull Future After Managing Director Meeting

Sat, 03/09/2024 - 10:43am

Following recent speculations, Helmut Marko's future with Red Bull Racing has been confirmed to remain secure after a pivotal discussion with Red Bull's CEO, Oliver Mintzlaff, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding his position.

Key Takeaways:

  • Helmut Marko's role at Red Bull Racing has been solidified after concerns about his future due to an ongoing investigation.
  • A productive dialogue between Marko and Oliver Mintzlaff in Jeddah has led to a clear confirmation of Marko's continuing involvement with the team.
  • Max Verstappen's staunch support of Marko underscores the critical influence Marko holds within the team and Verstappen's career trajectory.

In light of recent turmoil and conjecture regarding Helmut Marko's standing within Red Bull Racing, a significant meeting with Red Bull GmbH Managing Director Oliver Mintzlaff has dispelled doubts, securing Marko's place within the team's future plans. This development follows amidst swirling rumours tied to an investigation into alleged information leaks related to Christian Horner.

Addressing the speculation, Marko shared his concerns about his future with the team in an interview with Austrian television, hinting at the possibility of his departure. However, the narrative took a positive turn after Marko's meeting with Mintzlaff at the Shangri-La hotel in Jeddah, ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Reflecting on the discussion, Marko told Sky Germany:

"It was a very good conversation. Of course, calm must return to the team. That has priority.

"We agreed on all points. I will continue here. My contract still has three years to run. But calm must return."

This affirmation of Marko's role was further bolstered by Max Verstappen's vocal support, underlining Marko's indispensable role in the team and Verstappen's own career. Verstappen's assertion of loyalty to Marko was a testament to their deep-rooted relationship. Marko stated:

"It was very impressive. I am very grateful to him for that. But he is one of the few who has strength of character and shows loyalty."

Addressing the accusations of leaking sensitive information, Marko firmly denied any wrongdoing, stating:

"The leaking is complete rubbish. I'm glad I can manage to use my mobile phone. I've never seen any of these chats."

As the team moves forward, Mintzlaff's brief remarks in the paddock echoed a sentiment of unity and focus:

"We are focusing on the racing. We are happy with our management."

F1 News: Former Driver Makes Big Claim On Max Verstappen Mercedes Move -"Would Be St*pid"

Sat, 03/09/2024 - 9:32am

Former driver Giancarlo Fisichella has revealed that it would be "stupid" of Red Bull driver Max Verstappen to move to Mercedes, considering the obvious factors such as having the best team and the best car on the F1 grid, currently.

Key Takeaways:

  • Former F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella advises against Max Verstappen's potential move from Red Bull to Mercedes, citing Red Bull's current status as the best team with the best car on the grid.
  • Speculation about potential replacements for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes intensifies after his announcement of departure for Ferrari in 2025.
  • Internal discord within Red Bull surfaces as Max Verstappen's father calls for the removal of team boss Christian Horner, while advisor Helmut Marko faces the possibility of suspension before the Australian Grand Prix. Verstappen expresses loyalty to Marko and suggests that leaving Red Bull would negatively impact his standing within the team.

Since Lewis Hamilton announced his Mercedes departure for Ferrari, scheduled for 2025, the rumor mill has been churning hard to suggest potential replacements for the seven-time world champion.

While Verstappen's name was an extremely far-fetched possibility, the most recent and perhaps one of the biggest controversies to have struck Red Bull and F1 has ensured that the rumor mill revs at higher RPMs.

Amidst calls from Max Verstappen's father, Jos, for the removal of team boss Christian Horner, internal division within the ranks has reached unprecedented levels. Verstappen himself acknowledged the oddity of being on the opposite side of his father in this matter.

However, the matter has become more critical after Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko, who shares a close relationship with Verstappen, revealed this week that there is a possibility of him being suspended by Red Bull before the Australian Grand Prix.

Marko has played a pivotal role in recruiting crucial talents to the team, including Verstappen, former driver Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz, and numerous others. Verstappen, expressing loyalty to Marko, emphasized that leaving Red Bull would have a detrimental impact on his standing within the team.

Amidst the brewing controversies, Fisichella has questioned Verstappen's potential move to Mercedes if it does happen anytime soon. Speaking to OCB Scores, he said:

"Anything is possible in Formula 1 and in life, you just never know. Nobody expected to see Lewis Hamillton moving from Mercedes and especially closing the deal with Ferrari. Nobody expected that.

"But we don't know if Max will join Mercedes, next year or in the future. In the place where he is now with the best team and the best car – it’s stupid move to another team.

"The salary is good at Red Bull and it could be the same or even more in Mercedes so who knows?

"But you know, you got a winning car, you are at the top of the world at the moment. Why, why move to another team?"

F1 News: Mercedes Loses Director To Ferrari After Lewis Hamilton Shift

Sat, 03/09/2024 - 7:55am

Jerome D'Ambrosio has transitioned from Mercedes to Ferrari, sources have confirmed to RacingNews365. This comes after D'Ambrosio's year-long tenure at Mercedes as driver development director.

Key Takeaways:

  • Jerome D'Ambrosio transitions from Mercedes to Ferrari, marking a significant shift in his career within Formula 1.
  • Known for his role in nurturing Mercedes' future talents, D'Ambrosio's departure is a notable loss for the German outfit.
  • This move adds to the intrigue of the F1 off-track dynamics, especially following Ferrari's recent acquisition of Lewis Hamilton.

The F1 world is witnessing a notable personnel shift as Jerome D'Ambrosio departs Mercedes for a new chapter with Ferrari. His tenure at Mercedes, primarily focusing on driver development, saw D'Ambrosio emerge as a key figure in the team's strategic framework, particularly in nurturing the next generation of racing talents.

Before his involvement with Mercedes, D'Ambrosio's racing career included stints in Formula 1 with Marussia Virgin Racing and Lotus. His post-racing career trajectory saw him take on significant roles, such as deputy team principal at Venturi Racing in Formula E, showcasing his leadership and strategic acumen.

During his time at Mercedes, D'Ambrosio's presence was not just confined to the developmental aspects of the team. He was often seen alongside team principal Toto Wolff, especially during critical race weekends, underscoring his influential role within the team's hierarchy. His stint as acting team principal during Wolff's absence further cemented his standing within the team and the broader F1 community.

However, Ferrari's recent strategic coup, spearheaded by team principal Fred Vasseur, has led to D'Ambrosio's surprising switch. This move follows the high-profile announcement that Lewis Hamilton would join Ferrari, pointing to a significant reshuffling within the F1 personnel landscape.

The specifics of D'Ambrosio's role within Ferrari are yet to be disclosed, but his departure from Mercedes signifies a considerable shift.

F1 News: Max Verstappen's Father On Horner Allegations - "I Sympathise With The Woman"

Sat, 03/09/2024 - 5:20am

Jos Verstappen expressed his support for the woman who levied allegations against Christian Horner, after she was suspended from the Milton Keynes team. The saga has cast a shadow over Red Bull Racing, sparking reactions from within the F1 community.

Key Takeaways:
  • Jos Verstappen, father of F1 star Max Verstappen, voices his sympathy for the woman accusing Christian Horner of inappropriate behaviour.
  • Verstappen Senior to miss the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, citing participation in the Hannut Rally in Belgium.
  • The controversy surrounding Horner is said to be affecting Max Verstappen's focus and performance, according to his father.

Red Bull Content Pool

The unfolding drama surrounding Red Bull Racing's team principal, Christian Horner, has captured significant attention. Jos Verstappen, in a statement to the Daily Mail, articulated his backing for the accuser amid her suspension. This development comes as Max Verstappen, the three-time world champion, gears up for the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix from a pole position, albeit without his father's presence at the event.

"I sympathise with the woman, with all that she went through, but we will see what happens," Jos Verstappen remarked

His absence at the Grand Prix, due to participation in a rally event in Belgium, doesn't diminish his concern over the controversy's impact on his son.

Jos Verstappen also hinted at the enduring nature of the situation, suggesting it may be too late to simply move past the allegations.

"I think it's a bit too late for that now. If that's what he [Horner] wants, fine, but I don't think it will be possible," he said.

"I don't want to talk too much more as it will create problems. But the most important thing for me is that Max is happy, that's what counts for me, I just want him to be happy."

The controversy has seemingly permeated aspects of Max Verstappen's professional life, with his father noting the distraction it has caused. Jos Verstappen criticised the media focus on Horner, and doubles down on his view that Horner should leave the team.

"But all these things that are going on are having an influence on Max. He was third in the first practice, and all we hear about is Horner and what happened with his situation.

"In the press conference Horner gave the other day it was all about him and his problems when we should be talking about Max, the car, his performance and the race.

"I've already said I think it is causing problems if he stays."

This comes on the back of Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko expecting to be suspended, with more news due on that today. Max has expressed concern over this, hinting that he likely won't stay if Marko is removed from the team.

"He has built this team from the ground up with Dietrich's blessing and I think he's always kept a good relationship with a lot of people in the team and backed the important people and in crucial moments as well," the 3-time world champion told Sky F1.

"He's definitely a key member now for the future."

F1 News: Mercedes Chief Welcomes Red Bull Consultant - "He Can Join Us"

Fri, 03/08/2024 - 8:00pm

In the midst of unfolding dramas at Red Bull Racing, Helmut Marko finds himself at the heart of the controversy, leading to his abrupt departure from the Jeddah Corniche Circuit and a potential suspension. Toto Wolff, with a hint of mischief, extends an open invitation to the Red Bull advisor to join Mercedes.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull is caught in an intense internal power struggle, with Helmut Marko unexpectedly leaving the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
  • Mercedes' Toto Wolff humorously offers Marko a position within his team, citing the need for a new "mascot" following Niki Lauda's absence.
  • Max Verstappen emphasises Marko's crucial role at Red Bull, hinting his own future at the team might be influenced by Marko's decisions.

The dynamics within the Red Bull team have taken a riveting turn, with speculation surrounding Helmut Marko's rumoured suspension. Reports of a power struggle have emerged, pointing to a turbulent atmosphere since the allegations against Christian Horner.

Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, watches the unfolding drama with an element of amusement.

"If the team gets rid of Marko, it will certainly be a loss for Red Bull and the team," Toto told ORF after the team's consultant admitted he may soon be suspended.

In a light-hearted gesture, he extended an offer to Marko, suggesting a place for him within the Mercedes team.

"We miss our old mascot (Niki Lauda), so we just take Helmut with us. He's the right age. He just doesn't have a red cap, but he can join us," Wolff quips.

On the other side of the garage, Max Verstappen has thrown his support behind Marko, with him admitting that he will leave the team if they decide to remove Marko.

“I cannot continue without Helmut Marko," he told De Telegraaf.

The implications of these internal dynamics could have lasting effects on the future of Red Bull. Hopefully tomorrow we'll know much more.

F1 Rumour: Ferrari Targets Red Bull Engineers As Team Tensions Rise

Fri, 03/08/2024 - 7:00pm

Ferrari has set its sights on poaching key technical staff from the ranks of Red Bull Racing amid growing unrest within the Austrian team. This initiative, spearheaded by Frederic Vasseur, aims to bolster the Italian squad's technical department by drawing on the expertise of Red Bull's engineers.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ferrari is exploiting the current turmoil at Red Bull Racing to lure away crucial technical personnel.
  • The focus is on engineers just below the top tier, avoiding Red Bull's top figures like Adrian Newey and Pierre Waché due to extended gardening leave periods.
  • Frederic Vasseur's strategy mirrors the actions of McLaren and Aston Martin, who have previously succeeded in acquiring talent from Red Bull's ranks.

Ferrari Press Image

Recent reports from Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport have unveiled Ferrari's ambitious plan to capitalise on the current disarray within Red Bull. Under the guidance of Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari is not just aiming to strengthen its position on the grid but is also looking to destabilise its rivals by targeting their key technical staff - brain drain.

The current issues within Red Bull Racing present a golden opportunity for Vasseur, who has been proactive in reinforcing Ferrari's technical team since taking the helm. Unlike previous high-profile moves, Ferrari's current strategy avoids the top-tier technical minds such as Adrian Newey and Pierre Waché, due to the lengthy gardening leave that accompanies such positions. Instead, the focus is on the layer of engineers just beneath, whose immediate contributions could significantly influence Ferrari's performance, especially with an eye towards the 2026 season.

This approach is not unprecedented in Formula 1. Cadillac has been doing exactly the same thing. They're extracting talent, ingenuity, and expertise from competitor teams. Many of these individuals will often operate beneath directors and managers, and being in a new team provides a platform for innovation. These engineers and designers, who might have struggled to have their ideas approved by senior management, will potentially have the opportunity to bring their visions to life within Ferrari.

While specific names of Ferrari's targets remain undisclosed, the intent is clear: to inject fresh talent and insights into their technical department, potentially accelerating their progress and challenging Red Bull's dominance more effectively.

  • Hamilton emphasized the need for immediate action to resolve the intensified problem, highlighting its impact on stability and performance, especially compared to previous experiences.

Hamilton further disclosed the inconsistency he experiences with the car, noting that he was beginning to adjust to his W15 this morning as it felt improved, only to encounter bouncing issues during the afternoon qualifying session.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about the problem, Hamilton said:

"It was similar to previous years. There are so many elements of this car which are better, but we are being hindered with the bouncing we have.

"The bouncing we have through turns six, seven, eight, nine and 10, which probably affected George...it's something they have not been able to fix. We made some changes overnight and this morning the car felt so much better.

"I was re-gaining this confidence again then when we get to qualifying, it disappeared again. But George did a great job. He's a lot more comfortable in the car - similar to the past couple of years I'd say.

"But we keep our heads down and keep working away. I've got a bit of a better feeling as to where the issues are coming from so I will try and address it with the team."

Hamilton indicated the timing of the bouncing issues while urging for a prompt resolution to the problem. He added:

"We've tried every set-up change. We can't get rid of it. It's difficult to explain.

"We had some bouncing in Bahrain but nowhere near as intense as here.

"That first sector is super high-speed with a lot of yaw in the car and a lot of lateral load and the bouncing really offsets the car quite a bit.

"If you imagine when the car goes up and down at the back, your balance shifts forwards and rearwards

"If you are doing that at 160 or 170mph, correcting that each time...the others like Max are flat through six, seven and eight and the balance is just stable. That's what we are working towards.

"We've got to fix it. It's three years in a row. We've got to get on top of it."

Three-time F1 champion Max Verstappen has openly expressed his reliance on Helmut Marko amidst speculations of Marko's departure from Red Bull. The star driver's future with the team appears uncertain should Marko leave.

Key Takeaways:

  • The future of Max Verstappen at Red Bull is closely tied to Marko's presence within the team.
  • The situation underscores the significant impact of team dynamics on Red Bull's preparations for a demanding F1 season.

Helmut Marko, the team's influential advisor, has candidly discussed the potential for his suspension in an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF. This development comes at a crucial juncture for the team, already navigating the complexities of internal disputes following the controversy surrounding team principal Christian Horner.

Marko's remarks reveal a layered situation, with the advisor acknowledging a "theoretical possibility" of his suspension amidst a backdrop of unspecified team turmoil. The exact nature of this discord remains unclear, but it is evident that recent events involving Horner have stirred significant unrest within the team's ranks. Marko stated:

"How can I put it? It is difficult to explain, but ultimately I decide what I'm going to do it."

"But is there a possibility [of suspension]? That theoretical possibility exists.

"It is such a complex issue. And again, we want peace in the team and we want to see it. This world championship is becoming difficult enough with 24 races and that's what we have to concentrate on."

This controversy takes on added weight with the revelation of Max Verstappen's stance. The top driver for Red Bull has made it clear that Marko's potential exit could dramatically affect his own future with the team. Verstappen commented to De Telegraaf:

“I cannot continue without Helmut Marko.”

As the F1 community reels from the recent rumours around Helmut Marko's potential departure from Red Bull Racing, Mercedes' team principal, Toto Wolff, has shared his perspective on the matter. The news broke after Marko hinted at a looming suspension in light of an internal investigation accusing him of disclosing sensitive information to the media. While Red Bull Racing refutes claims of Marko's suspension, they clarify his affiliation with Red Bull GmbH rather than the racing team itself.

Wolff, in his dialogue with ORF, didn't shy away from acknowledging the gravity of Marko's possible exit for Red Bull, stating:

"If the team gets rid of Marko, it will certainly be a loss for Red Bull and the team."

Despite a known rivalry, Wolff expressed respect for Marko, appreciating his contributions as a "racer" to the sport and Red Bull's legacy.

The Mercedes chief also delved into speculation about Max Verstappen's future amidst the chaos, hinting at Mercedes as a potential new home for the star driver. With Mercedes harboring a vacancy for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, Wolff teased the possibility, yet conceded that Verstappen's loyalty lies with the fastest car, currently Red Bull's domain. Wolff reminisced about his decade-long acquaintance with the Verstappen family, emphasising a personal rapport yet maintaining a professional distance on potential team switches.

"We have a free seat for 2025 and 2026, but Max will want to drive for the team with the fastest car, and that is Red Bull today.

"We have been talking to each other for 10 years, since Verstappen has been in Formula 1.

"I have a good relationship with Jos and also with Max, but that does not mean we also see a change professionally."

F1 News: Christian Horner Responds To Helmut Marko Suspension Stories

Fri, 03/08/2024 - 1:42pm

Following a notable discussion with Viaplay post-qualifying in Saudi Arabia, Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing's team principal, shed light on Max Verstappen's impressive pole position and delved into the swirling rumours around Helmut Marko's potential suspension. This conversation came in the wake of Red Bull Racing's triumphant qualifying session, which saw Verstappen and Sergio Perez secure P1 and P3 respectively, and amidst growing speculations of internal discord as revealed in a candid interview by Marko with Austrian broadcaster ORF.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull Racing excelled in Saudi Arabia's qualifying, with Verstappen taking pole position and Perez finishing third.
  • Christian Horner attributes Verstappen's Q3 success to his intrinsic talent and an exceptional first lap.
  • Helmut Marko's hinted suspension has stirred discussions, amidst internal controversies and its potential impact on the team, including Max Verstappen's future.

Christian Horner has addressed the media after a fruitful qualifying session for Red Bull Racing in Saudi Arabia. The team demonstrated formidable performance, with Max Verstappen securing the pole position and teammate Sergio Perez clinching third place. Horner praised the team's efforts and Verstappen's standout performance, particularly in Q3, where his unmatched speed and remarkable first lap were highlighted as key factors to his success.

"Yeah, very strong. Two laps that were quick enough for the pole position. The car's working well. Great to have Checo in P3 as well. So, strong qualifying from him," he said in the post-qualifying press conference.

However, the conversation soon pivoted towards the speculation surrounding Helmut Marko's potential suspension from Red Bull Racing. In an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF, Marko himself acknowledged the "theoretical possibility" of such an outcome amidst ongoing team controversies.

"How can I put it? It is difficult to explain, but ultimately I decide what I'm going to do it."

"But is there a possibility [of suspension]? That theoretical possibility exists."

Verstappen's contract reportedly includes a clause tied to Marko's presence in the team.

"Max is certainly the strongest asset, there are no faster drivers at the moment," Helmut admitted. "Losing him would be a huge loss. Also for the mechanics and engineers, who all strive to work for Max."

Christian Horner, in his discussion, seemed caught off guard by the rumours of Marko's suspension.

"Well, it's the first I've heard of that, so I'm not sure where that rumour has come from," he said.

The unfolding saga around Marko's potential suspension and its ramifications for the team and Max Verstappen adds an element of uncertainty to Red Bull's 2024 campaign. Marko's importance to the team, both as an advisor and as a pivotal figure for Verstappen and the engineering crew, cannot be understated. His potential absence could lead to significant shifts within the team's dynamics and strategy moving forward.

Who is Helmut Marko And What's The Max Verstappen Connection At Red Bull?

Fri, 03/08/2024 - 1:30pm

Renowned as the senior advisor at Red Bull GmbH, Dr. Helmut Marko's tenure with the team dates back to 1990. Appointed by company founder Dietrich Mateschitz, Marko oversaw the Red Bull Junior Team, shaping the careers of F1 stars like Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo, and Alex Albon.

Key Takeaways:

  • Dr. Helmut Marko, Red Bull's senior advisor since 1990, has played a key role in shaping the careers of Formula 1 stars like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen through the Red Bull Junior Team.
  • Despite a racing career cut short by a tragic eye injury in 1972, Marko transitioned to become a successful driver manager and founded RSM Marko, later acquired by Red Bull as the Red Bull Junior Team.
  • Marko's close bond with Max Verstappen, whom he recognized as a future F1 star at 16, highlights their strong relationship. Speculation arises about Verstappen's future should Marko face suspension from Red Bull, given their close ties.

An 80-year-old still actively engaged, Dr. Helmut Marko, late Mateschitz's trusted confidant, holds a law doctorate earned in 1967. Marko's racing career flourished in the late sixties, culminating in victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours alongside Gijs van Lennep and establishing his prominence in the Grand Prix circuit. However, tragedy befell him in 1972 when a stone struck his left eye, resulting in the loss of vision in that eye and prompting the conclusion of his racing endeavors.

Despite the setback, Marko continued his involvement in motorsport, shifting his focus to a role as a driver manager. He guided promising talents such as Gerhard Berger and Karl Wendlinger before founding his junior team, RSM Marko, which now competes in the contemporary equivalent of Formula 2. Subsequently, Red Bull assumed control of his team, rebranding it as the Red Bull Junior Team, and appointed Marko as the advisor to the racing department and head of the training program.

Marko's Fatherly Relationship with Max Verstappen

Following an outstanding performance in Euro Formula 3 at the Norisring in the summer of 2014, Helmut Marko immediately recognized the potential of Max Verstappen, then just 16 years old. Marko wasted no time contacting Max's father, Jos, expressing his desire to see Max in Formula 1.

He offered Verstappen a Toro Rosso seat for 2015. Practice sessions were quickly arranged later that year to prepare Verstappen for the demands of Formula 1.

Here's what Marko had to say about their first meeting:

"That was in 2014 in Graz. Normally I speak with a young driver for 20, maybe 30 minutes at most, but with Max the conversation lasted two hours!

"His dedication stood out immediately. Fully focused on his racing career, he had a clear goal, Formula 1, and he had no doubt that he would succeed. You need that confidence and for me that was very unusual."

Competing in Formula 1 for Toro Rosso (now Visa Cash App RB) until 2016, Marko's utmost faith in Verstappen's ability to become a world champion elevated him to the senior team, Red Bull. Marko stated at the time:

"Max can race fast in any car. In terms of character, dedication, confidence and charisma, I would compare him to Ayrton Senna. I see Max driving at this level for at least another decade."

Verstappen also shares a similar fondness for Marko. Speaking to RacingNews365.com in 2021, Verstappen described Helmut Marko as a father figure, emphasizing their strong bond. When discussing both Marko and team principal Christian Horner, Verstappen highlighted their excellent rapport, particularly praising Marko's straightforward nature and his preference for honest communication. He said:

"Helmut is like a father to me.

"I have a very good relationship with both of them and with Helmut, he says what he thinks, is always straightforward and I like that. No bullshit stories with him.

"The rapport with Marko is just very good and so is the one with Christian. Over the years we've obviously been through so much, so it's all good. We get along very well."

Therefore, the strong bond between Verstappen and Marko raises speculation about the departure of the three-time world champion from the team in the event of Marko's suspension from Red Bull.

With the recent news of Helmut Marko's potential exit from Red Bull, if the Austrian truly does leave, this could spell a big issue with Verstappen, who's contract is reportedly connected to his mentor. If Marko leaves, Max could surely follow, leaving Red Bull in major hole.

The revelation of internal discord at Red Bull Racing is palpable. At the heart of the controversy is Helmut Marko, suspected of divulging confidential information. This suspicion has led to rumoured restrictive measures against Marko, including a directive from Red Bull's top management barring him from media communications.

Max Verstappen, the team's leading driver, has been vocal about the situation, paying tribute to Marko's influence and their shared achievements.

"From my side, I have a lot of respect for Helmut and what we have achieved together. It goes very far, and of course, my loyalty to him is very big, and also I've always expressed this to everyone within the team, to everyone high up, that he's an important part of my decision-making for all the time in the future," Verstappen stated.

The potential departure of Marko from the team he played a fundamental role in building presents a concerning scenario for Verstappen.

"It's very important that he stays within the team, including, of course, everyone else, because it's a whole team effort, and it's very important that we keep the key people together.

"I feel like if such an important pillar falls away, that's also what I've said to the team, that it is not good for my situation as well."
