Online scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, duping Americans out of $2.1 billion in 2025, a figure that is only set to grow. While social media still dominates as the top place where scams start, spoofing phone calls, texts, and emails remains a huge market for these digital thieves.

You may remember the early days of email scams when messages with poor grammar and fantastical stories about needy Nigerian princes graced everyone’s inboxes. For most people, these oddly worded pleas for money were easily recognizable as scams.

Modern scammers have improved their methods, even spoofing numbers from trusted sources like Chase Bank. That’s how Jennifer Lichthardt was tricked into giving away $40,000, according to ABC Chicago News. She notes that the fraudsters not only called from a number identical to the Chase number on the back of her card, but also had her account number and exact balance down to the penny.

This sounds scary. How can a scammer get all that information? Usually, through data breaches, something many of us ignore when they’re announced. Sensitive information is for sale to the highest bidder on the dark web, and scammers can purchase it for shockingly cheap. 

You can help mitigate the flow of your personal data by using data removal services like DeleteMe, but software can’t catch everything. That’s why the FBI warns consumers to be vigilant when contacted by anyone claiming to be from your bank, or even the Federal Government.

Lichthardt was told that Chase employees had access to her account and was advised to move the $40,000 into a “secured” Chase account. The scammers withdrew the money the same day. 

Because Lichthardt moved the money herself, no security software would have caught or stopped her. But understanding the warnings issued by banks and the government could have helped her stop before she transferred the funds.

It’s important to remember that no financial institution or government entity will call you to ask for your banking details or to move money. The IRS isn’t taking payments over the phone, and Chase doesn’t expect you to put money in “secured” accounts. 

If you receive one of these calls, it’s best to hang up and then call the institution yourself. Never use a number provided by the caller, and always contact the institution through verified channels (like the bank’s phone number from the website or the back of your card). That follow-up phone call could save you from being the next scammer’s victim.

One of the most popular rock bands of the '60s was Buffalo Springfield, made up of Neil Young, Bruce Palmer, Dewey Martin, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay. The band had a short run, released only three albums, and had their last farewell concert as a band in early May before breaking up.

Buffalo Springfield was originally formed in Los Angeles in 1966 under the folk rock and psychedelic rock genres. Their debut track, "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," had moderate success and one spot shy of making the Billboard Hot 100. They reached the Top 10 with their counterculture anthem and protest song "For What It's Worth" and released their second album in 1967.

The band became known for tracks like "Mr. Soul" and "Bluebird," but their run was quickly coming to an end. Buffalo Springfield was often in trouble with the law, with Palmer often deported due to marijuana possession. Young was also appearing less and less frequently, giving the reins of lead guitar to Stills.

According to UltimateClassicRock, Neil told Mojo in 1995 that he initially left the band because he didn't want to do the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. He felt it was "belittling" of what the band was doing, and the audience wouldn't understand them. On May 5, 1968, Buffalo Springfield would perform their farewell concert at the Long Beach Auditorium.

Many fans saw the performance as the very end for the band, with the members having set up a meeting with Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun to arrange their official breakup.

"I just couldn't handle it towards the end," Young explained about his departure. "It wasn't me scheming on a solo career, it wasn't anything but my nerves. Everything started to go to fucking fast. It was going crazy, joining and quitting, joining and quitting again. I began to feel like I didn't have to answer or obey anyone. I'd quit, then I'd come back 'cos it sounded so good. I just wasn't mature enough to deal with it."

Stills also added that they each had fallen victim to the idea of having their own entourage and forgot the brotherhood of the band. In 1968, Furay and Jim Messina compiled various tracks to form Buffalo Springfield's last album, Last Time Around. After the disbandment, Martin formed a new version of the band and toured extensively. Palmer also reformed his own version of the band in the early '80s.

In 1986, Palmer, Martin, Furay, Young, and Stills dabbled with the idea of a reunion tour, but it was scrapped. It had been one of the last times all five members were together. While Young expressed interest in reuniting with the original band, Palmer died in 2004 and Martin in 2009. The remaining members, Young, Stills, and Furay, reunited at the Bridge School Benefit in 2010 and later reunited for six concerts in 2011. Young announced in 2012 that Buffalo Springfield was on an indefinite hiatus.

While the upcoming Harry Potter TV series has hogged most of the media spotlight since its announcement, fans of the original film series got their own bit of good news on May 5. HBO Max revealed in a press release that it's partnering with Pod People to launch Harry Potter: The Official Film Podcast on May 19, to celebrate 25 years since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone was released in theaters.

New episodes will drop every Tuesday, with two episodes premiering on May 19. Each episode will run for 60 minutes. In total, fans can expect 16 hours worth of episodes, with two episodes devoted to each of the eight films. The podcast will be available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, AntennaPod, or whatever platform you use. For those interested in watching the podcast, videos will also air exclusively on HBO Max.

Self-professed "Harry Potter obsessive" Rhianna Dhillon will host the show, bringing her film-critic expertise and extensive Harry Potter knowledge to the experience.

"Have you ever confidently explained Horcrux mechanics at a dinner party?" Dhillon asks in the podcast trailer. "Genuinely debated the true purpose of a rubber duck? Or declared out of nowhere that Slytherins are vastly misunderstood? Because -- same."

Along with deep dives and dissections of each film, Dhillon will interview those who worked behind the scenes, giving listeners and viewers valuable insider information. She will also be joined by various co-hosts, who love talking about Harry Potter just as much as she does.

Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, the original films ran from 2001 through 2011. When filming began, the actors were 11, 10, and 12 years old. Because they spent the next decade together on film sets, many of the actors from the films remained in touch after filming ended.

Oliver and James Phelps, who played George and Fred Weasley, have stayed more connected to the films than many of their castmates. In 2022, they began Fantastic Friends, a series in which they met up with a different Harry Potter actor each episode. In 2024, they began hosting Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking, in which contestants bake Harry Potter-themed desserts. Like Fantastic Friends, many of their former co-stars, such as Evanna Lynch and Bonnie Wright, have appeared as judges.

It was a banner year for pop music in 1974 with artists such as the Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Bad Company, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney & Wings and others topping the charts. Yet there was one No. 1 album that was different than all the others.

It was the soundtrack to an Oscar-winning film that featured no singing and was centered around a 72-year-old song. It was called The Sting.

The song in question was “The Entertainer,” a ragtime piano number written by Scott Joplin in 1902, updated by noted pianist/composer Marvin Hamlisch.

The musician was recruited to work on the soundtrack to the film that starred Robert Redford and Paul Newman as a pair of con men. Hamlisch and Hill were pals dating back to the days when Hill directed plays on Broadway and Hamlisch occasionally served as a rehearsal pianist.

Yet since those days, Hamlisch had become a star in his own right, co-writing Barbra Streisand’s first No. 1 single, “The Way We Were” with the songwriting husband-and-wife team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

Working on The Sting was different for Hamlisch than writing for Streisand. Although he wasn’t a particularly big fan of Joplin, he was left with the task of figuring out which of the composer’s songs would work best in the context of the film.

“The way George cut the film was very musical,” Hamlisch said in an interview for The Billboard Book of Number One Albums. “But Joplin’s music wasn’t always a perfect fit, so I had to do things to make it fit.”

Initially, there weren’t even plans to release a soundtrack album to the film. “It was an afterthought,” Hamlisch added. “I don’t think anyone realized that it would be a big hit.” Since the music was recorded with a relatively small band of 10 or 11 players, the album could be recorded inexpensively, even if it wasn’t a big seller.”

Aside from using “the crème de la crème of Scott Joplin,” which included three different takes of “The Entertainer” on the album, Hamlisch wrote some original music, including “Luther” and “The Glove.” Hamlisch explained, “Anything I wrote was written in a very Scott Joplin manner, and hopefully no one could tell my originals from his music.

The formula worked. With The Sting a big hit at the box office, the soundtrack album rose to the top of the Billboard album chart the week of May 4, 1974, in its 15th week on the list, making it the first instrumental album to top the chart since “Dueling Banjos” from the Original Soundtrack Deliveranceaccomplished the feat in March 1973. Like “Dueling Banjos,” “The Entertainer” did not top the Hot 100, peaking at No. 3, but the fact it was a hit at all stunned Hamlisch.

“We were totally surprised when ‘The Entertainer’ became a hit single,” he said. “We had no idea that in the midst of all the rock ‘n’ roll that was dominating the charts, we could have a hit with some Scott Joplin ragtime.”

From 1985 until the massive price spike in 2015, ground beef prices fluctuated but didn’t spiral too far out of control. Over the past 11 years, however, prices have been shooting up to record levels while many Americans complain their wages can’t keep up. 

There are plenty of TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube accounts dedicated to showing you how to make your ground beef favorites for less, using ingredients like lentils, textured vegetable protein, and vegan grounds to supplement beef or replace it altogether. Ground chicken and ground turkey have also become popular options in dishes like pasta, meatballs, and meatloaf, replacing beef in recipes once dominated by it.

The century-old candymaker is the latest company to find a sweet way to celebrate the 250th birthday of the U.S., following limited-time offers from brands including Betty Crocker, Hot Pockets, Monster Energy, Oreo, as well as Pillsbury, and this news is confirmation that fans have been begging for.

Haribo's Red, White and Blue Goldbears are coming back for the 2026 season, a spokesperson shared with Parade via email. And if you're familiar with the brand and its recent foray into seasonal mixes, then you're probably aware that this means the limited return of two exclusive flavors of the beloved gummy bears.

The limited-edition mix was first released in 2024 and features three highly acclaimed flavors: Pineapple, Cherry, and Blue Raspberry (the latter two Goldbears flavors are found only in this mix).

At its debut and upon its return last summer, fans were ecstatic and called it one of the "best flavor combos."

"I had these. These are a good mix of flavors," another shared on Reddit. "I like whenever Haribo pumps out a new variety of an old classic."

The brand recognizes that fans have been asking for the return of Red, White and Blue Goldbears since they last disappeared, so it's following through and making the festive variety available well ahead of the July 4 holiday and peak summer barbecue season.

Pop culture chart knowledge came into play in Final Jeopardy, as two out of three players got it right. Crisenberry, who got off to a slow start earlier in the game, opted for the boldest all-or-nothing move, as she wagered her entire $19,200, answered correctly, and doubled her winnings to $38,400. A spectacular payoff! 

Kaplan played it more conservatively, wagering $3,000 of her $18,600 total, getting it wrong, and dropping to $15,600. Roberts, who came in with $7,200, wagered only $2,800, got it correct and walked away with a respectable third-place total of $10,000.

Crisenbery will return on Wednesday to defend her title.

This novel is set to make you really think about what you consider paradise to be!

Get ready to delve into a mystery that will bring up darker elements of the past. You’re sure to start questioning the history that we know of now. After all, history has been written by the victor, and it’s time to take the truth back.

This isn’t a summery beach read, despite it being set in “paradise.” It follows Lehua, a woman who heads back to her native Hawai'i in search of her missing twin sister. Well, maybe she won’t find her sister, but she does want to learn what happened to her.

What Lehua doesn’t expect is to learn about the darkness of the luxury resorts. Kendall delves into real history about these resorts, making you question what you really think about luxury. It is a sense of The White Lotus with a Jordan Peele theme, something that the HBO series felt like it should have been from the start!

After all, these resorts have been built on top of plantations. They are benefitting from the slave trade, but it’s something that nobody wants to talk about. And while the novel itself is fictional, there are truths to the story that will leave you feeling somewhat uncomfortable — and that’s okay! It’s okay to not really like the feelings you’re sitting in, but sit in them to help see the world change.

There are some supernatural elements to the story as well, and there is a bit of a love story — but don’t confuse this for a romance. It’s definitely NOT a romance! This is a heartfelt story mixed with tension and suspense.

Within the story, there is also a tale of reclamation and belonging. We have a main character who hasn’t necessarily grown up in the culture that she comes from. She’s going back, reclaiming who she is while finding where she belongs, because she’s never felt like she belonged anywhere before.

That Which Feeds Us is now available to purchase, and it’s a must-read for those who love The White Lotus but want something a little more like Mexican Gothic. Kendall is writing from experience, as she is a Hawaiian native who now lives in Los Angeles, and the fictional location is based on the real Lāhainā resort.

Audiences have always flocked to science fiction movies, especially within the past decade or so. That being said, not all recent sci-fimovies are of the same caliber.

Colliderrecently shared a list of the top 10 "most perfect sci-fi movies of the last five years." The ranking, published on May 2, included hit films like Nope, released in 2022, 2026's Project Hail Mary, Frankenstein from 2025, 2024's Furiosa, 2022's Everything Everywhere All at Once, and 2023's Godzilla Minus One.

The publication named Dune: Part Two, released in 2024, the "most perfect" film from the science fiction genre since 2021.

Dune: Part Two, which has a 2-hour and 46-minute run time, has a 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 79 on Metacritic.

In a November 2024 interview with fellow director Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, who directed and co-wrote both Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, discussed adapting Frank Herbert's first Dune book, released in 1965. Villeneuve explained that when crafting the screenplays for Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, he wanted to "create as much cinema and not falling into too much exposition."

He also shared that while he wanted to be faithful to the Dune novel, there were some details absent from the book that he had to "fill [in] the gap." The director explained that there's nothing in the novel about how one would ride the sandworm.

In addition, Villeneuve said he wanted to honor Herbert's desire not to have Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) be celebrated.

"[Herbert] wanted to do a cautionary tale, a warning against charismatic figures," said Villeneuve during the 2024 interview.

Villeneuve said he decided to make the message of his film "clear for the audience that Paul became a colonizer himself" and not a savior. One way he did so was to change Chani's (Zendaya) characterization from how she's presented in the Dune book.

"In the book, she's in the shadow of Paul. In the second half of the book, she disappears in his shadow. She's a believer. She follows him. And I thought that there was a opportunity there to have her become our moral compass," said Villeneuve to Nolan.

The English rock band Squeeze announced on Instagram this Tuesday that they will be touring around North America this coming August and September on their Tried, Tested and Trixies Tour, which supports their most recent album Trixies,and celebrates almost 53 years together. The ensemble announced their European dates last November, and they will take place this winter, with opening act Billy Bragg.

The North American leg of the tour is expected to kick off in Nashville on August 16 and conclude on Sept. 27 in Detroit. They are also making stops in Boston, New York City, Toronto, Cleveland, Denver, Salt Lake City, Portland, San Francisco, Las Vegas and more. Special guests will include Adam Ant and Haircut 100.

Formed in 1974 by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, Squeeze rose to prominence in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s. Though they weren't as popular in the United States, some of their hits, such as "Tempted," "Black Coffee in Bed" and "Hourglass" were popular and considered a huge part of the Second British Invasion, a 1980s pop culture movement where the world saw an increase in British pop music.

Though they took breaks in 1982 and from 1999 to 2007, the band has been together for 52 years. So far, Squeeze has released 16 studio albums, with their most recent being Trixies in March. The lineup has changed multiple times throughout the years, but the band's current members include Difford, Tilbrook, Stephen Large, Simon Hanson, Steve Smith, Melvin Duffy, Owen Biddle and Danica Dora.

When it came to writing Trixies, Difford and Tillbrook wanted to celebrate their 50-year career, and revisited their older songs. The 16th studio album revisited the tracks that the two wrote during their teenage years, way before releasing their self-titled debut album in 1978.

"These are very much the same songs that we wrote then," Tilbrook told Rolling Stone back in November. "The only difference is that now I can teach the songs to the rest of the band. Back then, I didn't even know what the names of the chords were."

Presale for the North American leg of the Tried, Tested and Trixies Tour will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m local time, where fans can use their code "TRIXIES" for access. General sale will happen on Friday.

A new trailer for The Odyssey dropped Monday, and fans can’t wait for the summer blockbuster to hit the big screen. While mythology mavens and action enthusiasts are on pins and needles, it looks like there are three kiddos who are also pretty excited for this mega-movie.

Last winter, while promoting The Rip, actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. While the duo discussed their recent project with Fallon, the conversation turned to The Odyssey. Of course, Damon plays the title role of Odysseus in the Christopher Nolan flick, saying that it was, “Absolutely the pinnacle of my entire career.” 

Fallon asked Affleck about visiting his BFF on set, and the actor explained, “Yeah, I did, and I’m a huge fan of Chris.” But as it turns out, he wasn’t the only fan. Allfeck continued, “You know, it was one of those things where my kids never want to come to the set when I’m working…they’re like, ‘No, I got school.’ They’d rather go to school.”

Affleck went on to say, “They were really psyched to come visit the set. My middle child’s really interested in actually reading the ‘Iliad’ and the ‘Odyssey,’ and we went there, and it was really great.” 

Ben Affleck has three children with ex-wife, actress Jennifer Garner. The couple married in 2005 and divorced 13 years later in 2018. Affleck was also famously engaged to another Jennifer (that is, Jennifer Lopez) before marrying Garner. He reconnected with Lopez in 2021 and married the pop icon in 2022. But their romance didn’t last, and the pair divorced in 2025. 

While Affleck never had children with Lopez, he has maintained a seemingly solid co-parenting relationship with Garner. Their eldest child, Violet Anne Affleck, turned 20 last December and attends Yale University. Affleck and Garner’s middle child, Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck, is a 17-year-old high school student who revealed a name change (to Fin) in 2024. The youngest Affleck, Samuel, was born in February of 2012. 

So now that you’ve seen the trailer and heard about Affleck’s kiddos’ reaction to the filming of the movie, when can you catch the epic? Even though a brand-new trailer just dropped, fans will have to wait to actually watch the full-length movie. The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon (of course), Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya, hits theaters on July 17, 2026. 

Hollywood has been in a love affair with Biopics for a good period now. The specific trend that most people point to is the Music Biopic, which received a massive new entry recently with Michael, the film about the life of Michael Jackson. This summer isn't done yet, however, with films of those we tragically lost too early, as the trailer for Tony released today, a film about the humble beginnings of the legendary Anthony Bourdain.

Bourdain was a hard man to categorize. Many knew him as a chef, and many also knew him as a writer. Some knew him also as a TV host on Parts Unknown and No Reservations. I think that's part of what made him such a successful and endearing figure. He defied categorization. He was somebody who made a legacy out of tearing away labels and creating community through writing, food, and travel. He was completely singular.

With such a massive, fascinating personality, it makes sense that a film would be made exploring his life. Tony is that film, directed by Matt Johnson fresh off of Nirvanna: The Band - the Show - the Movie, and stars Dominic Sessa (who is phenomenal in one of my favorites, The Holdovers) as Anthony Bourdain. The film is set to cover the beginnings of Bourdain's career in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The trailer released today and was met with many mixed reactions from fans. Take a look:

The main divide comes at the topic of the film's existence. Many fans expressed that they feel Bourdain would not have wanted this film to be made.

"Idk if Bourdain would have wanted this."

"Anthony Bourdain wouldn't have liked this at all... however, I will be seated. Forgive me, Tony."

Others showed obvious excitement for the film, which I honestly share with them.

"Love the look, can't wait. Love me some Bourdain."

"Looks good. Hopefully they did Chef right!!!!"

"Ommmggggg this looks so good!"

Tony is set to release sometime in August, distributed by A24. I, for one, am very excited to see how this ends up. Matt Johnson has established himself as a unique filmmaking voice, and Dominic Sessa is a rising star who I think deserves much more attention. No matter what, I will be seated on release day.

The Foo Fighters almost didn't happen. At least that's what Dave Grohltold Stephen Colbert during his appearance on The Late Show on Monday, May 4.

Grohl was there with Foo Fighters to promote their new album, Your Favorite Toy, which was released on April 24, during which the band performed two songs from the new album, "Caught in the Echo" and "Window."

The 57-year-old drummer-turned-singer also sat down to chat with Colbert about everything from the longevity of Foo Fighters to how they named the new album. The late night talk show host cut straight to the chase, calling out the fact that the band has been together for 31 years, asking "Was there a specific moment when you knew you were ready to start a new band after Nirvana?"

"Yes, there was," Grohl responded. "When Nirvana ended, I wasn't sure what to do. I didn't know if I wanted to continue playing music. It made me sad to think of playing in another band; losing Nirvana, losing Kurt was a really dark emotional experience. So I thought ,you know, I just need to get my head together and I rented a car and drove around the Ring of Kerry in Ireland. It's gorgeous. One of the most beautiful places in the world."

The rock singer continued, "I was driving on this country road, and there were like sheep, and it was a great day. And there were green rolling hills, and all I wanted to do was disappear. And as I was driving down this country road, I see a hitchhiker, and he had a Kurt Cobain T-shirt on."

The audience audibly gasped as Grohl continued his story, "To me, I thought, 'Okay this is the universe telling me you have to continue, you have to go on, you have to go forward.'"

"Music has always been the love of my life, It's helped me through some of my most difficult moments and when I saw the kid with the Kurt Cobain T-shirt I thought, 'Okay I have to keep going.' I have so much reverence and respect for the past but I need to have a future."

The "Best of You" singer went on to explain the bond between Foo Fighters band members, calling them "the coolest people in the world" and playing on on-stage as a group the "greatest gig in the world."

But Foo Fighters have not been without tragedy either. Beloved drummer Taylor Hawkins died in 2002, leaving a huge hole in the band that they tried initially to fill with Josh Freese, who played with the band until he was let go in July 2025, making room to bring in former Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin, who made his drumming debut with the band on their latest album.

Foo Fighters will head out for a stadium tour that begins on Aug. 4, 2026 at Rogers Stadium in Toronto. The North American leg of the Take Cover tour consists of 12 tour dates featuring Queens of the Stone Age, Mannequin Pussy, and Gouge Away as opening acts and will end on Sep. 26, 2026, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

A voluntary recall has been issued for several kinds of potato chips after a third-party supplier notified Utz Quality Foods, LLC that a seasoning containing dry milk could contain the presence of Salmonella. 

The affected seasoning batches, which had dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies, Inc were tested for Salmonella, and the results came back negative, but out of an abundance of caution, Utz has recalled limited varieties of both Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips. Utz has not received any complaints of illness due to the ingestion of the affected potato chips at the time of publication.

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of Salmonella can include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically within 8 to 72 hours after exposure. Nausea, vomiting, chills, headache, and blood in stool can also occur. Though Salmonella typically clears up on its own, the medical center suggests that a health care provider should be contacted if the affected person is an infant, young child, older adult, or someone with a weakened immune system and their illness lasts more than a few days.

Other reasons to contact a medical provider are if the affected person falls into one of those groups and has a high fever, bloody stool, or has symptoms of dehydration like dry mouth and tongue, is urinating less than usual, or has dark-colored urine.

In 1982, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts turned a 1975 flop into a global smash hit with their cover of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll."

The original version of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was released in 1975 by the British band The Arrows as the B-side to their single, "Broken Down Heart." While the song received a generally positive response—prompting the band to re-release it as an A-side—it didn't gain enough momentum to secure a position on the charts.

Despite its initial failure, the song experienced a massive resurgence in the early '80s. In 1976, Jett, then a member of The Runaways, saw the Arrows perform "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" on a U.K. television program. Inspired, she recorded a cover of the track with the Sex Pistols in 1979. In 1982, she returned to the studio with the Blackhearts to record the rendition that would go on to dominate global charts.

Within two months of its release, the cover climbed up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks. In addition to its U.S. triumph, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" also topped the charts in Canada, Sweden and Australia, and reached No. 4 on the U.K. Singles Chart. The cover's undeniable dominance ultimately made it the No. 3 song of the year—a remarkable feat for a track that had previously failed to break into the charts.

With chart prosperity came commercial success, and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" certainly saw strong sales. Within a year of its release, the song was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 2 million units in the U.S. alone. Today, the song has sold over 4 million physical copies globally.

In 2016, Jett's cover was critically recognized, earning a spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame for its undeniable influence on the music industry. More than four decades after its release, the track remains popular in the streaming era. On Spotify alone, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" has amassed over 674 million streams, attesting to the songs enduring legacy.

Quick! What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think about McDonald's? Is it the iconic Big Mac with extra mac sauce or those gloriously crispy fries? Maybe it's a discontinued item, like the McSalad Shaker, or a decidedly questionable McLobster Sandwich? For me, it's that ultra crispy Sprite. You know the one. It's the most soda-tasting soda ever—like you're drinking lemon-lime-flavored TV static or battery acid—but in a good way. It's the kind of Sprite that jolts your senses awake and burns your nose hairs when you burp. And you can only get it out of the self-serve fountain at Mickey D's.

It's developed its own cult following, and more persnickety McDonald's Sprite connoisseurs would say that they can tell when it's off or watered down. Unfortunately, it looks like the days of filling our cups to our hearts' content with the crispiest, most effervescent soda around might soon be coming to an end. McDonald's has quietly started phasing out self-serve soda fountains nationwide, which means no more endless refills of crispy Sprite and no more getting a water cup only to fill it with soda. Feel free to observe a moment of silence.

Now that you've had the chance to mourn, let's look at why McDonald's made this decision in the first place. Although it feels like an abrupt end to an era, the rumor first surfaced in 2023 that Mickey D's would be removing self-serve soda machines, which was later confirmed by Today.com. The plan is to phase out all self-serve stations by 2032, leaving roughly six years before they disappear completely. According to the brand, the goal of removing the machines is to streamline operations and ensure a consistent dining experience for workers and customers. 

From a broader perspective, McDonald's is doubling down on drive-thru and mobile ordering and has also expressed plans to have servers delivering meals and drinks directly to customers' tables, virtually eliminating the need for a soda fountain. But social media isn't so sure the brand's motivations are entirely innocent. While Mikel Petro, an Illinois McDonald's operator, claims that it's a natural "evolution towards convenience and (the result of) the growth of digital service," fans believe the reason is a bit more calculated. 

"Reminder that this is because executives want to cut costs and raise the bottom line," espoused one person. "Capitalism requires continuous, unsustainable growth, which is why EVERYTHING around you sucks more and more every day."

"Just so they can charge for refills, which used to be free," theorized someone else.

Several others called it a "recession indicator" and suggested going literally anywhere else. "Thank you, McDonald's, for giving me another reason to never eat your food ever again," conceded one fan. 

It looks like this might be one of the more controversial moves Mickey D's has made in a long time. On the bright side, McDonald's has expressed a commitment to increase the quality of its menu items and even jumped on the Dirty Soda bandwagon, which might indicate that the brand has lofty expectations for what's next for the Golden Arches.
