More than 50 years after it first appeared on the landmark 1970 album Moondance, Van Morrison’s beloved soft rock ballad “Into the Mystic” is still being celebrated as one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Rolling Stone ranked the track at No. 462 on its updated list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” once again placing the dreamy classic among music’s most respected recordings. The recognition adds another major milestone to a song that many fans and critics consider Morrison’s defining masterpiece.

“Into the Mystic” became one of the songs most closely tied to Morrison’s career. Rolling Stone described the track as “delectably arranged” and “transportingly sung,” calling it “the definitive Morrison song.” The magazine also praised the song for feeling “like a lover’s whisper.”

The publication highlighted how the recording sessions for Moondance helped shape the song’s warm and natural sound.

Even Morrison himself admitted that the song’s deeper meaning remained mysterious to him. Reflecting on his songwriting during that era, he said, “So many of my songs from that Seventies period, I haven’t a clue what they’re about. A lot of the time, I was just picking up on a vibe.”

Recorded between September and November 1969 at A&R Recording Studios in New York City, “Into the Mystic” quickly stood out as one of the emotional centerpieces of Moondance. The song blended soft rock, folk, soul, jazz and spiritual themes into a sound that became closely linked to Morrison’s style.

Music critics have long praised the song’s poetic writing and emotional pull. A review from Rolling Stone famously called it “the heart of Moondance,” praising lyrics including: “I want to rock your gypsy soul/Just like in the days of old/And magnificently we will fold/Into the mystic.”

The song’s dreamy atmosphere also sparked many interpretations over the years. Morrison once explained that the title was originally written as “Into the Misty” before he changed it because the music carried “something of an ethereal feeling.”

Critics often connected the song to spiritual searching, love and transformation. Per JSTOR, Johnny Rogan described the recording as something that sounded both heavenly and deeply connected to Morrison’s Belfast roots.

The song’s lasting impact has only grown stronger with time. In earlier editions of Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” “Into the Mystic” ranked at No. 480 in 2004 and No. 474 in 2010 before rising to No. 462 in the magazine’s 2021 update.

More than five decades after its release, “Into the Mystic” remains one of Morrison’s most popular songs worldwide.

The track is currently Morrison’s second most-streamed song on Spotify, behind “Brown Eyed Girl.” It also reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales chart and hit No. 1 on Ireland’s radio airplay chart in 2022.

Over the years, many famous artists recorded their own versions of the track. Musicians including Joe Cocker, Michael McDonald, Zac Brown Band, The Wallflowers and Bob Dylan have all performed or recorded the song. For Morrison, whose career began in the 1960s before exploding with albums like Astral Weeks and Moondance, “Into the Mystic” remains one of the clearest examples of the soulful and spiritual style that made him one of music’s most respected artists.

On Friday's broadcast of Today, Dreyer rocked several colorful outfits inspired by the Kentucky Derby. One included a green dress and a brighter green hat with pink accents. A second look featured a pink floral dress and a coordinating pink hat—and she playfully completed the outfit with a pair of white Crocs.

She also shared that took input from her three sons ahead of the "Run for the Roses."

“I will try on a lot of my dresses, and Ollie, my middle guy, just thinks I look pretty in everything," she explained. "But Calvin is very opinionated, and he’ll be like, ‘No, you can’t wear that. Nope, I don’t like it.’ Or, ‘Yes, that’s pretty.’ If Calvin doesn’t like it, I’m not wearing it because if he doesn’t like it, someone else won’t too."

Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing three months after her Feb. 1 abduction in Tucson, Ariz., with a new video showing a masked man stealing plants in the 84-year-old's neighborhood.

Recently, News 4 Tucson (KVOA) published footage and stills from a Ring camera in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood, not far away from Nancy's home.

A masked thief is shown in the video footage wearing gloves and a baseball cap, and stealing potted cacti from a driveway. The video was taken at approximately 11 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29. According to the neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous but posted the clip to the Ring app, the suspect drove a gray Ford F-150.

There is no evidence that the man in the new Ring video is connected to Nancy's case. However, neighbors seemed surprised by the clip, according to KVOA, especially considering that the Pima County Sheriff's Office (PCSD) had increased patrols in the area after neighbors complained about a YouTuber "harassing" residents, KVOA previously reported.

"It is someone walking on your property late at night, uninvited, it might be a small crime, but committing a crime, and it is disturbing," Jeff Lamie, who lives a few homes down from Nancy, told News 4 Tucson. "This drives the point home that we have to be watchful, be aware of our homes but also of our neighbors."

When KVOA reached out to the PCSD about the new footage of the masked person, the department responded, "We have not been advised of anything like this. We will do some research and keep you posted."

On May 1, the investigation into Nancy's disappearance officially reached the three-month mark. The 84-year-old was last seen at her home on the evening of Jan. 31, with family members reporting her missing on Feb. 1. Despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward and the FBI releasing a video and photos showing a masked man on Nancy's front porch, no suspect has been named in the case.

Despite achieving significant commercial success throughout their career, it took '70s rock band the Doobie Brothers five years to top the Billboard Hot 100.

The Doobie Brothers was formed in 1970 in San Jose, California, by guitarist Tom Johnston, drummer John Hartman, bassist Dave Shogren and guitarist Patrick Simmons. After producing four studio albums—garnering initial success with hits like "Listen to the Music" and "Jesus Is Just Alright" from their 1972 album, Toulouse Street—the band finally achieved a No. 1 hit with "Black Water."

"Black Water" was an organic and somewhat unexpected triumph for the Doobie Brothers. Much of its success stemmed from a Roanoke, Virginia AM radio station called WROV-AM, which played the song repeatedly due to the region's proximity to the Blackwater River.

The song was originally released as a B-side to "Another Park, Another Sunday" on their fourth album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. The band initially believed the song's sparse acoustic arrangement and experimental a cappella vocals would not fare well as a single. However, after high regional demand and positive listener reviews, they re-released the track as a single in November 1974.

After a few months, the song climbed up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 1 in March 1975 for one week. The chart-topping track marked a massive milestone in the band's career, further solidifying them as a dominant force in the rock genre.

In 1979, the band followed up their No. 1 success by topping the Hot 100 for a second time with the single, "What a Fool Believes." That track famously won two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Even after decades, both chart-toppers continue to be recognized as some of the '70s' most defining rock classics.

George Lucas’ American Graffiti has long been considered a cultural touchstone. The director’s second full-length feature, it’s a coming-of-age comedy that borrows from his own teenage years, capturing the sights and sounds of 1962 in a way that turned nostalgia into a cinematic time capsule. Even better: The film was just ranked the best rock movie of 1973 by Ultimate Classic Rock.

Set in the summer of 1962, right after high school graduation and just before Beatlemania, the film rides shotgun with a group of teenagers cruising, drag-racing, sock-hopping, and, of course, listening to Wolfman Jack’s rock-and-roll hits on the radio. When you’re feeling nostalgic for nostalgia, it doesn’t get better than this slice of teenage Americana.

Featuring more than 40 classic rock hits, including  Del Shannon's "Runaway," the Crickets' "That'll Be the Day," and the Del-Vikings' "Come Go With Me," the soundtrack is a cultural phenomenon itself. A near complete re-creation of the film’s tracklist, the double album sold more than 3 million copies. One major rock-and-roll voice missing from the rock soundtrack? The King. The crew behind the picture just couldn’t afford Elvis Presely. 

"The kids in American Graffiti are therefore probably the only teenagers in America who could listen to the radio all night in 1962 and never hear an Elvis song," Mental Flosswrites.

American Graffiti is just full of fun trivia like that. Beyond the music, the film itself was forced to overcome hurdle after hurdle. The biggest might have been that producers were angling for a TV movie release. That is, until Francis Ford Coppola boarded the project as a producer, flexed his Oscar-winning Godfather moxie, and insisted on a theatrical release. Made ‘em an offer they couldn't refuse, eh?

The film’s cast was stacked — Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Harrison Ford — but again, not without obstacles. Ford, who was working as a carpenter to support his wife and two kids, per Mental Floss, was approached for the role of Bob Falfa, but wouldn’t agree to the part unless he could keep his hair long. They compromised by fitting the newbie with a Stetson. 

Meanwhile, Mackenzie Phillips, the daughter of John Phillips, the lead singer of The Mamas & the Papas, was just 12 years old at the time of filming and had to be legally taken under guardianship of a producer, per California law. She lived with the producer’s family for the duration of production.

Today, the film is a blueprint for nostalgia-driven storytelling and teen hangout cinema, influencing everything from Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused to Amy Heckerling’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High and even the broader teen comedy wave of John Hughes’ classics.

In 1972, a quietly released song would go on to become one of country music's most enduring classics, though its biggest success wouldn't come until years later.

"Pancho and Lefty," written and first recorded by Townes Van Zandt, has since been ranked among the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone, celebrated for its storytelling and emotional depth.

"I realize that I wrote it," Van Zandt said in an interview. "But it's hard to take credit for the writing because it came from out of the blue. It was like it came through me, and it's a real nice song."

Originally released on Van Zandt's album The Late Great Townes Van Zandt, the song flew largely under the radar and didn't achieve major commercial success at the time. But its haunting narrative, centered on the lives of two outlaws and the consequences of betrayal, quickly earned it a reputation as a songwriter's masterpiece.

That reputation only grew over time, eventually catching the attention of two country music legends.

In 1983, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard recorded their own version of "Pancho and Lefty," introducing the song to a much wider audience. Their duet brought new life to the track, pairing their distinct and legendary voices to amplify its emotional weight.

"I had been asleep about ten minutes, and he knocked on my bus," Haggard told Houston Press. "I got up — anybody else but him and I wouldn’t have even opened the door. But I opened the door and said, 'What's going on, Will?'" Nelson responded, "I found us a song."

Little did the pair know that they were making music history.

The result was a massive success. The cover version climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles, more than a decade after the song's original release.

The contrast between the song's modest beginnings and its later chart-topping success only adds to its legacy. It's a rare example of a track that found its full commercial impact long after its creation without losing the raw emotion that made it special in the first place.

Today, "Pancho and Lefty" is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of narrative songwriting in country music.

In the comments, Larry's Instagram followers fawned over Dannielynn's edgy look, with one writing, "She looks stunning! And not to shabby yourself, Dad."

During an interview with Access Hollywood on the Kentucky Derby red carpet, Dannielynn was asked how she thought her mom would react to her new hair, after going from a long blond look to a pixie cut with black tips.

"I don't know," she admitted. "I think she might like it, maybe. I can't really say, for sure, but she was cool. And I'm cool, so..." to which Larry interjected, "She'd definitely love it."

When asked if she was still channeling a vampire vibe (as she described Friday night's look), Dannielynn replied, "Yes, but not so visibly this time. I'm still a vampire, but don't look like it too much right now."

"I think she's more refined than [a] vampire, but it's the best of the dark side," Larry added.

In 2007, Smith died from an accidental overdose when Dannielynn was 5 months old. Attending the Barnstable Brown Gala and the Kentucky Derby has been a father-daughter tradition for Larry and Dannielynn for many years, as Larry and Smith first met at the 2003 gala when he worked as a photographer.

Last weekend was a tough one for Saturday Night Live fans, as the iconic sketch show was on a break...and sadly, a longer hiatus isn't very far away, as Season 51 is almost over.

Yes! Tonight, May 2, Olivia Rodrigo will pull double duty as both host and musical guest. While this will be the singer's debut as host, she's appeared as musical guest twice before.

In a preview for tonight's episode, James Austin Johnson delivered a dead-on Miranda Priestly impression in honor of The Devil Wears Prada 2, which opened yesterday.

On May 9, Matt Damon will return to SNL for his third time as host, joined by Noah Kahan as musical guest.

SNL airs at 11:30 p.m. EST / 8:30 p.m. PST.

Beau Starr, best known for his roles in the Halloweenfranchise and Goodfellas, has died at the age of 81.

Starr reportedly died on Friday, April 24, of natural causes, his brother, Mike Starr, told TMZ. The actor died peacefully of natural causes.

"It is with a heavy heart Im here to inform everyone of the very sad passing of Beau Starr. [Mike Starr] asked me to make the announcement," Christopher Serrone, who starred alongside Starr in the 1990 mob film. "Beau enjoyed a rich a meaningful life. He was a son, brother, father, grandfather, actor and NFL/CFL player. Please take a moment to help me remember a great guy. RIP. #Goodfellas #hoodlum #holloween4 #holloween5 #NYJets"

Tributes poured in for the late star, with many fans sharing their favorite memories of his work.

"He was a great actor, your scene with him in Goodfellas is still a scene I will never forget, he was also good in Halloween 4-5, May he rest in peace," one fan wrote.

"He was a great actor & good man in person. Very sad to read this news. I am sorry for his family loss," another wrote.

Beau Starr was born in New York in 1944 and became an actor after a career as a professional football player. Starr was signed by the New York Jets after playing college football at Hofstra. He later played in the Canadian Football League for the Montreal Alouettes and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

His first feature role came in 1982 alongside Gene Wilder in Hanky Panky. He later appeared in films like Summer School and Cinderella Man.

Carol Burnett just turned 93 last week, and she's still the queen of the red carpet.

The titan of comedy, who broke boundaries and created endless belly laughs with her timeless comedy series The Carol Burnett Show, which ran from 1967 to 1978 on CBS,  recently returned for season 2 of the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale. Still thriving, she hit the red carpet before speaking onstage at "We Have This Time Together: A Conversation with Carol Burnett" during the 2026 TCM Classic Film Festival at The Hollywood Roosevelt on May 01. With a bright smile on her face, Burnett made it clear that she's not slowing down anytime soon.

Recently, Burnett opened up in a profile in the New Yorker about why Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels has never asked her to host the iconic program.

“I don’t know what I did to upset that man,” Burnett told the publication. “Do you think it’s misogynistic?” she asked her interviewer.

The piece noted that Michaels declined to comment in response.

The piece continued, explaining that Burnett is an icon to many of the stars who have come to prominence on SNL. When Burnett presented Amy Poehler with a lifetime achievement award at Variety’s Power of Women event last year, Poehler made it clear how grateful she is to Burnett for forging a path before her.

“I wanted to thank my mother, the mother,” Poehler said, adding, “ ‘S.N.L.’ owes everything to you.”

The closest Burnett came to hosting was making a brief appearance in a 1985 segment when host Harry Anderson shouted her out, the piece notes.

While Burnett openly questioned what she did to upset Michaels, she made it clear she wouldn’t be interested in hosting SNL anytime soon. Back in 2019, she confirmed that the window had closed.

“No, I don’t think I would. Maybe like 20 years ago or whatever,” she told Vulture. “But that ship has sailed.”

Once was considered a "sleeper" hit, with its popularity taking off after positive word-of-mouth reviews and critical acclaim. In total, the film grossed over $20 million worldwide—an impressive feat for a project with a budget of only $150,000.

Aside from its commercial success, the film's stunning musical score was recognized at the 80th annual Academy Awards, taking home the Oscar for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly." The film also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album.

The film starred Glen Hansard, the '90s Irish rock star and frontman of the band The Frames, as the lead character, Guy. Once is a musical romance that follows the story of a struggling street performer and a Czech immigrant pianist as they push one another to pursue their passions. The film is an intimate take on romance and musical connection. Combined with its tender soundtrack, Once has gone down in history as one of the most impactful musical films ever made.

Today, Once continues to make waves in popular culture. After closing on Broadway in 2015, the film's Tony-winning musical adaptation is expected to return with a reimagining at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre later this year.

Olivia Wilde is getting a lot of attention right now, but not entirely for her new movie.

Last week, the actress-turned director stepped out to promote her new film,The Invite, which she directs and stars in, but instead of getting attention for the comedy due out this June, much of the discourse shifted to Wilde’s appearance, with fans debating how different she has looked during her recent public outings. 

Wilde’s film opened the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 25. While walking the red carpet, she spoke with reporters, including SF Gate. While she discussed her new project’s connection to the city. Wilde wore a simple white tee with a voluminous high-low black midi skirt, with her hair pulled back into a half-up style and glam that accentuated her light-blue eyes. 

"I think we really took advantage of everything that I love so much about this city,” Wilde said on the red carpet before the screening. “It’s such an incredible cultural melting pot, and you can feel that. It sets the tone for our film.”

Jerry Seinfeld has a few choice words about driving electric cars.

The legendary comedian and creator of Seinfeld, 72, who rose to stardom in the '90s in the lead role on the world's favorite "show about nothing," kept us laughing with Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee until 2019. In 2024, he directed Unfrosted, a feature for Netflix, and still makes occasional appearances on other shows. A seasoned car enthusiast, Seinfeld opened up about his passion for vehicles in a new interview. But if there's one thing you shouldn't expect him to be driving anytime soon, it's an electric car. When asked if he's "on the electrification train" by Air Mail, Seinfeld had a few choice words to say.

"No, I’m not interested in electric cars at all. Anybody else wants to do it, that’s fine. I think it’s a big, stupid virtue signal. Look at me. I’m saving the planet, yeah. What about the lithium? It’s all BS," Seinfeld shared.

The comedy icon, who has been married to Jessica Seinfeld since 1999, made it clear that while Hollywood may be filled with people who have addiction issues, his biggest vice is his penchant for buying and selling cars.

"I’ve never had really any problems with addiction, except this. Selling cars can be very exciting, too. It’s pretty clear that cars coming and going seems to stimulate some receptor in the brain for people that are genetically inclined. It’s powerful stuff," he continued.

Back in December, Seinfeld made fans of his iconic TV series smile when they saw him reunite with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who rose to stardom as Elaine Benes on the series, and Larry David, who co-created the show. While it had been a whopping 37 years since the show first hit the airwaves, the trio still found the time to laugh and smile together. Now that's a lasting friendship.

 Last year, LaBellle got emotional while celebrating her 81st birthday with a bold message for fans about aging during her New York concert.

The singer, who turned 81 that day, shared an empowering message for the crowd during the performance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, which featured fellow icons Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Stephanie Mills as part of the Queens Tour.

"Let me say something. I have so many people who are afraid to say how young they are," she told the crowd, People reported. "Don't be scared. 81 is wonderful, okay? Happy birthday."

Deeply emotional, LaBelle later continued by saying, "We don't take that for granted. We are such hardworking women. I've been doing it for 65 years, and to still have people come to see our show, we are truly blessed."

Dressed in a pastel blue pantsuit that wrapped at the front, LaBelle went on to express her gratitude to all the people who made the journey possible.

Later, she was presented with a luxe floral cake and a massive flower bouquet as 50 Cent's "In Da Club" played in the background.
