8 Psychological Benefits of Knitting and Crocheting, According to a Psychologist

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 2:11pm

There are so many activities you can do that help you wind down at night. Whether you enjoy reading to shut off your brain or a more hands-on activity, it's important to have something you can do outside of work to create a better work-life balance. Psychologists say that engaging in activities like knitting and crocheting can be the perfect hobby for this and provide an array of psychological benefits.

Whether you're experiencing grief or want to create a healthier relationship with your partner through gift-giving, knitting or crocheting can help. Even if you're a beginner to either of these practices, licensed psychologist Dr. Brandy Smith, PhD, says that each of these can create a safe, peaceful environment, especially when you set aside even 20 or 30 minutes a day to do it.

That's not all, either. If you're curious about whether knitting can help with trauma, ADHD or focusing overall, keep scrolling. Dr. Smith shares eight incredible psychological benefits that knitting and crocheting can provide below.

Does Knitting Heal Trauma?

While activities like crocheting and knitting can be a great way to boost your mood, Dr. Smith, says that it's not really these things alone that can help heal trauma.

"Can knitting be beneficial and help one with trauma? Yes, but I would not go so far as to say it is going to 'heal' trauma on its own," she tells Parade.

What it can do, however, is create a peaceful environment, which is beneficial for someone coping with any kind of trauma.

"Some people report that when they knit, it creates a calm within their nervous system, and since trauma can be connected to the nervous system, knitting can connect on that level for some people," she further explains.

She also says that knitting and crocheting are reported by some to be the ultimate relaxation tool and a good activity for stress relief.

"Both can help someone who is experiencing trauma (and in general)," she shares. "It can be meditative for some people because of the repetition, which is another potential benefit in general and for people navigating trauma."

Is Crocheting Good for Mental Health?

Dr. Smith says that any activity you enjoy and find rewarding can be positive for your mental health. If you enjoy crocheting or knitting, then it can definitely be beneficial to your overall well-being. As she mentioned previously, it can be a great stress-reducer due to the repetition and calming environment it creates, but there's also another common issue it can help.

She also reports crocheting and knitting as helpful for anxiety because it gives you something to focus your energy on. "That can help with aspects of both depression and anxiety," she adds.

Are Knitting and Crocheting Good for the ADHD Brain?

While there hasn't been much scientific research done on whether knitting and crocheting are good for ADHD directly, there are studies that report it can result in an increase of the alerting and orienting networks of the brain, even after a brief, single session. The study also explores the possibility that these types of activities, along with meditation, can pave the way for neurorehabilitation (specialized programs designed to improve function and reduce symptoms experienced by individuals with nervous system disorders or injuries).

"Some people report those activities as helping with focus because it is repetitive and something they can become engaged with, which can be beneficial to someone with ADHD," adds Dr. Smith, thanks to her expertise as a licensed psychologist.

8 Psychological Benefits of Knitting and Crocheting, According to a Psychologist1. It provides something to do and look forward to

Finding activities to do outside of work is important for your mental health. Knitting or crocheting provides a low-lift way to keep yourself busy.

"It's an activity that a person can look forward to doing," Dr. Smith says. "While we need rest, we also need to be active and do things, and this is a form of activity that can be wide-reaching."

2. It's beneficial for people who are goal-oriented

If you're someone who likes to have an end result in mind, Dr. Smith says this is the perfect activity for you.

"For people who are motivated by doing something they view as 'productive,' this can fill that," she explains. "Some people struggle to do something if there is not an end product that they view as 'meaningful,' enough. Since something is produced from knitting and crocheting, this individual can more easily be open to this as an option."

3. The repetition of it can be calming

As Dr. Smith mentioned above, the repetitive nature of knitting and crocheting can create a sense of calm—especially if you've had a long or stressful day.

"Repetition can be soothing to the point of [it being] meditative," she shares. "This is a frequently mentioned benefit and has been associated with tapping into aspects of our body's nervous system and aiding relaxation."

4. It provides you with something to focus on

Studies show that focusing your energy and attention on a specific activity like knitting or crocheting can really help to increase alerting and orienting networks in the brain. This can be beneficial to everyone—especially if you find yourself losing focus throughout your day or being less productive than you'd like to be.

"This is also different than the point above about creating an 'end product,'" says Dr. Smith. "This relates to keeping one's focus on the present of what one is doing because there is a pattern or some sort of approach the person needs to attend to in order to make progress on their project."

5. It can aid your focus elsewhere

While knitting or crocheting definitely requires you to stay focused in the moment, Dr. Smith says that, surprisingly, it can help you focus elsewhere, too.

"Another way some people report these activities as helping with focus is that it gives them something to do physically while still being able to listen and engage with someone (this may be more likely to come after someone is more familiar with the activity)," she explains. "Some people report that having something to do physically with their hands allows their mind to focus better on what they are 'supposed' to be paying attention to outside of the knitting or crochet project they are working on."

As an example, she says that someone may bring their knitting or crocheting project to meetings or a social gathering.

"While some people may view someone working on a project as 'not paying attention' to what else is happening, that is just not the case for some people's brains," she continues. "In fact, for their brains, it is the opposite because it allows them to hone in better."

6. It can serve as an act of love or a gift-giving opportunity

It's a great motivator to work on a gift for someone else. Dr. Smith says this can be a huge benefit of learning to knit or crochet.

"We are social beings, and doing something for someone else gives us a boost," she says. "Making a knitted or crocheted item can serve as an act of love or care. It can also be a gift, which adds to the specialness and taps into those 'feel good' feelings within the person creating the item."

7. It's a creative outlet

Not only are crocheting and knitting great for focus, but they can also be a great creative outlet outside of your regular everyday activities.

"Research shows expressing creativity in some way is beneficial to all of us, so this can be one more outlet to consider for creativity," Dr. Smith adds.

8. It provides sensory engagement

Because knitting and crocheting are such hands-on activities, Dr. Smith says it provides yet another benefit for your brain.

"Knitting and crocheting are a sensory experience across the board, but depending on the materials and tools used, it can be a fulfilling sensory experience on a whole other level for some people."

Sharon Stone Has a Great Sense of Humor

One of Stone’s most famous roles is that of Catherine Tramell in Paul Verhoeven‘s 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct. Stone’s legendary character, who is suspected of being a savage killer, is pulled in for questioning by the police. Tramell is dressed in a cream-colored outfit in the infamous scene, which went down in film history for being sexually charged. On Christmas Eve, Stone posted a photo of herself from the scene, along with a hilarious holiday message.

“A reminder to bring a little main character energy to your holiday. wishing you a wonderful time with your family & friends this season, if you need an inspo for your fashion tonight, might I suggest my look from nobody 2? It should keep the conversation… light. 🎄xo Sharon,” she wrote.

Last year, Stone revealed she’d love to tackle the role of her late friend and comedy icon Phyllis Diller, who passed away in 2012.

“I do want to play Phyllis Diller very, very badly,” Stone, who recently starred alongside Bob Odenkirk in Nobody 2, told Business Insider in an interview. “She and I were very close friends. Phyllis made little paintings for all my kids. She cooked me dinner a lot of times — that woman could cook. I told her I wanted to play her, and she sat down and taught me her laugh. She made me practice her laugh!”

Stone went on to explain that Diller’s journey from struggling comic to living legend was extraordinary, and that a variety of other stars could tackle the roles of the fellow comics who surrounded her.

“You know, she didn’t hit it big until she was 49. She lived in a trailer park with five kids and her schizophrenic husband, and practiced her act on women at the laundromat. It’s unbelievable. I think there are great actors who could play Bob HopeRed Buttons, Johnny CarsonSam Rockwell could play Johnny in his sleep. We were tight,” said Stone. “Yes, I’m desperate to play her.”

Now that’s one film we’d love to watch!

This Post-Apocalyptic Love Story Is Striking a Chord With Readers Right Now

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 1:36pm

A new novel arriving at the end of April is drawing attention for something far less common in the its post-apocalyptic genre. T.J. Klune’s We Burned So Brightplaces an elderly gay couple at the center of an apocalyptic story, a choice that is resonating with readers who rarely see themselves reflected in end-of-the-world narratives.

Klune, known for character-driven fantasy with emotional depth, leans into intimacy rather than chaos. The novel follows two men who have built a life together over decades as they confront the unraveling of the world around them. Instead of focusing on survivalist action or large-scale disaster, the story explores memory, love and the weight of a shared past when time suddenly feels limited.

Early coverage has emphasized how unusual that perspective feels within the genre. Apocalyptic fiction has long skewed toward younger protagonists or ensemble casts, often centered on physical endurance and rebuilding society. Here, the tension is more personal. The stakes are about both survival and what it means to say goodbye, to reflect, and to hold onto connection in the face of inevitable doom.

That is part of why the book is gaining traction now. Readers and critics have pointed to its portrayal of LGBTQ+ elders, a group that remains largely absent from mainstream fiction.

Related: Lena Dunham Bursts Into Tears on Camera After Learning 'Famesick' Hit #1 on the NYT Bestseller List

There is also a broader trend working in its favor. Book audiences have shown increasing interest in emotionally grounded storytelling, even within traditionally high-concept genres. Stories that blend speculative elements with real-world themes like grief, aging and long-term partnership are finding a wider readership, particularly among adults looking for something that feels both imaginative and deeply human.

Social proof has played a role as well, with early readers sharing reactions that highlight the book’s emotional impact. Rather than focusing on plot twists, many posts center on how the story feels, describing it as reflective and quietly devastating in a way that lingers after the final page.

The appeal is clear. This is not just another post-apocalypse Mad Max story. It's a love story that asks what matters most when everything else falls away. It also offers a rare look at a relationship that has already endured decades, shifting the focus from beginnings to endings and everything in between.

As more readers discover the novel, its success may signal a continued shift in what audiences expect from genre fiction. Big ideas still matter, but the stories that stay with people are often the ones that feel closest to real life.

Oncologists Say This Is the #1 Cancer Risk Factor No One Talks About

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 1:25pm

We have good news and bad news. The good news is that cancer deaths are on the decline in the U.S. Increased awareness, screening and personalized care based on risk factors have played a big role in this welcome development. The bad news? Rates for some cancer diagnoses are increasing in younger populations under 50, like colon cancer.

"Overall, these patterns highlight an important shift: while progress has been made in reducing mortality, cancer is increasingly being diagnosed earlier in life, reinforcing the importance of prevention, awareness and timely screening," says Dr. Brian Helfand, MD, Ph.D., a urologic oncologist at Endeavor Health.

A cancer diagnosis can feel cruel and even random, especially (but of course not only) in younger people. Sometimes, we can't control our cancer risk, such as with genetics, but other factors are changeable. For this reason, Dr. Helfand says understanding risk factors is crucial to getting ahead of cancer—and putting yourself in the best position to beat it and even lower your odds of developing it.

"Rather than thinking of cancer as something random, understanding risk factors helps to see it as the result of many influences adding up, including lifestyle, environment and biology," he tells Parade. "When a person understands their risks, they can take practical steps to lower them, such as adjusting daily habits or staying on top of recommended screenings."

Dr. Helfand adds that it can help you tune into your body sooner and seek care earlier, which is when treatment is often more effective. Speaking of daily habits, one is often overlooked as something that can increase or decrease cancer odds. Below, oncologists share their choice for the #1 cancer risk factor that no one talks about—and what to do about it.

"It has become increasingly recognized that sleep quality influences cancer risk," Dr. Helfand says.

Another oncologist echoes these sentiments. "In a very basic sense, cancer is a result of the body’s inability to eliminate mistakes that occur during natural cell growth," explains Dr. Kathryn M. Eckert, DO, a breast surgical oncologist for Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Dr. Eckert shares that the theory is that, when sleep is poor, your body's natural repair strategies are affected, and your cancer risk goes up. But she concedes it's hard to create and complete studies on the theory, so there's limited data on it right now.

Still, we do have some data. For instance, a 2023 study of more than 78,000 people published in Public Health suggested a link between poor overall quality scores, including for people with insomnia and who snore, and an increased risk of overall and site-specific cancers, such as breast and kidney cancer. The American Cancer Society says more research is needed, but also points to research indicating that poor sleep can contribute to a person's cancer odds.

4 Reason Why Poor Sleep Can Increase Your Cancer Risk

We hate to give you another reason to toss and turn, but oncologists warn that not getting enough sleep can raise cancer risks. Understanding why is one step toward action.

1. It can affect your hormones

Lack of sleep disrupts your natural hormone cycles. "Everyone’s internal clock depends on consistent sleep to regulate hormones like melatonin, which not only helps people fall asleep but also plays a role in controlling how cells grow and repair," Dr. Helfand says.

That's an issue because the body needs to get to sleep so it can naturally repair cells.

Plus, melatonin doesn't just help you get to sleep—research suggests it has anticancer effects, too. "Sleep disruption may decrease or block melatonin release and prevent its antitumor actions," says Dr. Alison Stopeck, MD, the associate director of clinical and translational research at the Stony Brook Cancer Center.

Melatonin isn't the only hormone affected by sleep. "Sleep is important for decreasing stress and stress hormones, regulating the repair of DNA that occurs naturally in people, and generally promotes a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining ideal body weight," Dr. Stopeck adds.

Chronic psychological stress is another potential cancer risk factor.

2. Poor sleep can affect your immune system

We often think of the immune system as something that protects us from colds, but we also need to keep it strong to help us ward off chronic diseases, like cancer. Poor sleep can weaken the immune system.

"During restful sleep, the body works behind the scenes to identify and remove damaged or abnormal cells," Dr. Helfand explains. "Without enough quality sleep, this process becomes less effective, so harmful cells may linger longer than they should and can turn into cancer cells."

3. It can trigger chronic inflammation

Our bodies need some inflammation to heal, but too much of it can, over time, increase cancer odds.

"Chronic poor sleep increases inflammation in the body," Dr. Helfand notes. "While inflammation is useful in short bursts, like when a person is healing from an injury, long-term inflammation can damage healthy tissues and create conditions that make it easier for cancer to develop."

4. Sleep deprivation can lead to other poor lifestyle choices

It's hard to cook for yourself, and it's easy to grab ultraprocessed convenience-store options when you're exhausted. Exercising after hitting "snooze" 12 times? Not likely. Yet, diet and exercise are critical components of cancer prevention.

"As a result, prioritizing high-quality sleep can help people make better dietary decisions, thereby improving body weight and decreasing cancer risk," Dr. Eckert says. "Regular exercise has been independently linked to cancer risk reduction for several cancers, but may also influence cancer risk by improving body weight."

How To Get Better Sleep

Getting better sleep can feel like a steep hill to climb. However, oncologists share that tweaking one habit at a time can make a big difference. Here are their top tips for getting better sleep—and lowering your cancer risk while you're at it.

1. Skip the nightcap

Alcohol helps you fall asleep fast, but the sedative effect is misleading. Dr. Eckert points out that alcohol can decrease the amount of time you spend in the all-important restorative sleep.

"Limiting alcohol consumption can increase the amount of restful sleep and allow you to wake feeling more well-rested," she says.

Related: This 3-Minute Habit Could Help You Sleep Through the Night

2. Stick to a schedule

There's room for spontaneity in life, but oncologists don't recommend surprising your body with a new bedtime each night.

"Keeping a consistent sleep schedule is one of the most effective ways to improve sleep quality," Dr. Helfand says. "Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps regulate your internal clock, making it easier for your body to know when it’s time to wind down and when it’s time to wake up."

3. Limit screens before bed

Whether you're doom-scrolling or comfort-watching sourdough-baking sessions, screens before bed can wreak havoc on sleep.

"Limiting screen time before bed is also important because the blue light emitted from phones, tablets and TVs can suppress melatonin production," Dr. Helfand says. "This can trick your brain into thinking it’s still daytime, delaying the natural process of falling asleep."

Related: Want To Sleep Better? This Is the Best Time of Day To Take Magnesium, Experts Say

4. Create a sleep den

Dr. Helfand reports that cool, dark and quiet sleep spaces promote more restorative rest.

"Darkness signals your body to produce melatonin, cooler temperatures help initiate sleep and a quiet setting reduces interruptions that can pull you out of important sleep stages," he explains. "Together, these habits help the body carry out the overnight repair work that supports long-term health."

5. Get tested for sleep disorders

If none of the above are working or if someone has told you that you snore, Dr. Helfand suggests getting tested for sleep disorders. He says that certain medical conditions, like obstructive sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome, can disrupt restorative sleep.

"Effective treatments are available and can improve both sleep quality and overall health," he emphasizes.

Other Cancer Risk Factors To Know About

Not getting enough sleep may increase cancer risk, but it's not the only thing to be mindful of. "Many cancer risk factors are within a person’s control, and these are often the most impactful over time," Dr. Helfand says. "Making gradual, consistent improvements in these areas can meaningfully reduce risk."

He reports that modifiable cancer risk factors include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Alcohol intake
  • Diet quality
  • Physical activity
  • Body weight
  • Sun exposure
  • Sleep habits

Dr. Helfand also notes that some factors are out of our hands, including:

  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Family history
  • Certain past environmental exposures.

"While you can’t change these, knowing about them is still powerful as it allows you and your care team to personalize the patient's screening plan and stay vigilant for early signs of disease," he shares.

2005 Film That Saved a Cultural Icon From the Brink Now Ranked in ‘Greatest Movies of All Time’

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 1:06pm

Twenty one years ago this month, the legend began — and ended up saving a cultural icon from the brink of extinction.

When Christopher Nolan unleashed his 2005 film, Batman Begins, he not only rescued the caped crusader from the Batman & Robin debacle of 1997, but he launched the first successful reboot in film history. And now, the superhero comeback is widely considered one of the most influential and greatest films of all time

A critical and commercial failure, Batman & Robin nearly derailed the beloved, decades-old franchise. The fourth and final installment of the series that began in 1989 with Tim Burton at the helm, the Hollywood misfire was mocked for its neon palette, cheesy dialogue, and campy villains — a far cry from the darker, more stylized vision that defined the original.

When Nolan took over years later, he steered Batman back into the shadows. His story, about a billionaire who learns the art of fighting to avenge his parents’ deaths, restored the grittier vision, but elevated Bruce Wayne's narrative with character, realism, and emotional depth. The director, whose resume at the time included Following, Memento, and Insomnia, was impressive, but he hadn’t dipped into blockbuster territory just yet. He had a steep climb ahead, but if anyone could pull it off, it was Nolan.

Revamping the cast with Christian Bale in the Batsuit, Nolan surrounded him with big-screen icons including Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Liam Neeson. He looked to cinematic legends for guidance, including Ridley Scott whose Blade Runnerwas a big influence, and insisted on directing all the action sequences himself.

“He said to the studio, ‘Why would I want to direct an action film where I hire another director to direct the action?’” director of photography Wally Pfister recalls in an interview with Empire. “It seemed insane, but it made all the sense in the world to me!”

Batman Begins made its world premiere on May 31, 2005. And it changed everything. Nolan’s film became the first successful reboot in film history, it salvaged a franchise on ice, and it reinvigorated the comic book movie. Compounded with a stellar soundtrack and score composed by the great Hans Zimmer, Batman Begins also paved the way for an Oscar-winning Dark Knight trilogy. Long live the Batman.

Batman Begins is streaming on HBO Max.

Brett Kissel isn’t afraid to admit that he’s been experiencing burnout. So much so that the country star says he has considered taking a break before, but he never followed through on his words.

That is, until now.

On Friday, May 1, the 35-year-old Canadian, known for songs like “Airwaves,” “Let Your Horses Run,” and “Farmer” featuring Lee Brice, took to social media, revealing plans to unplug for a month, especially from social media, to recharge and reset mentally.

View this post on Instagram

“I’ve always said I’m gonna do it… Then, you never wind up doing it.  But this time, I’m gonna do it,” Kissel began his post on Instagram, writing his message against a black background. “It’s kinda ironic, but I’m gonna unplug for a month or so, and ‘recharge’ my batteries.”

Fans Can Still Catch Him in Concert

Even though he’s stepping back to refocus, Kissel isn’t disappearing from the spotlight completely. He promised that he still plans to perform the rest of his upcoming shows, which include a full calendar of dates set in his home country. Those shows can be found on his official website

“I’ll see y’all at my shows, but you won’t see me on social media much as I take this time to relax and refocus. Been burning the candle for too many years straight,” Kissel wrote, adding that he plans to take up a few new hobbies to keep him away from social media.

“Maybe I’ll read.  Maybe I’ll write.  Maybe I’ll climb a tree.  Maybe I’ll ground myself with my feet in the grass. Maybe I’ll do nothing.  Who knows,” he said. “Wish me luck.  See y’all this summer when I’m ready to come out of hibernation. - BK”

Fans Chimed in With Their Reactions

Fans and followers, who saw Kissel’s message, took to the comments section of his post, sharing their reactions, with most folks supporting his decision to take some personal time.

“Everyone needs a recharge-reset. Especially when life has been nonstop. Proud of you for doing just that,” One person wrote, while another follower added, “Good for you, Brett! Enjoy life, enjoy family time, and just be you! We will all wait to see you at your next event! Enjoy the break!”

A third fan commented: “Sometimes unplugging is the best. You can focus on YOU! 🫂🙏🏼 wishing you the best during this time and hoping to see you soon! You’ve got this.”

Lindsey Vonn Planning to Walk Without Crutches for the First Time Since Tragic Accident

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 11:03am

Olympian Lindsey Vonn is ready to take the next steps in her recovery—literally. Vonn is slated to attend the Met Gala on Monday, May 4, where she will attempt to walk without crutches for the first time since she sustained a complex tibia fracture while competing in Milano Cortina.

"There are a few stairs. Yes, it's going to be intense. I was like, can I do this? Can I do this?" Vonn told CNN News Central. "You know, Thom Browne asked me a long time ago. And I love Thom. We did a campaign together during COVID. And it's been like the thing that I'm like, can I get there? Like, you know, it's like been the light at the end of the tunnel. And I'm going to try to walk. It's, like, technically supposed to be my first day of walking a little bit without crutches. So from the start to the top of the stairs, if I can make it with no crutches, that's a huge win."

Vonn has undergone multiple surgeries since she crashed on February 8. She's documented some of her rehab on social media, and has made great strides over the past few months.

"Step by step…recovering physically and mentally," she captioned a photo of herself walking on a beach with crutches on April 17.

"Smiling is everything. I’m just so happy to be around people again," she captioned another Instagram post that included photos and videos from her time at CBS on Saturday, May 2.

Vonn, 41, has stayed upbeat despite recent injuries that have impacted her career. As for her future, she isn't ready to make any definitive decisions just yet.

4 Taco Bell Items You Should Skip, According to Dietitians

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 10:40am

Taco night has a way of sneaking into almost everyone's week—especially when it comes with a craving for something salty, cheesy and fast and wrapped in familiar packaging. Taco Bell has built its reputation on exactly that kind of convenience—a menu that's endlessly customizable, budget-friendly and engineered for maximum flavor in every bite. From burritos stuffed to the seams to crunchy tacos that hit all the right nostalgic notes, it's the kind of place where a quick bite often turns into a full meal.

But behind the comfort-food appeal, the menu is a mixed bag from a nutritional standpoint. Registered dietitians say that while Taco Bell can absolutely fit into a balanced eating pattern, some of its most popular items are designed more for indulgence than everyday fueling. Think oversized burritos layered with cheese sauces, fried shells and heavy add-ons that quietly stack up calories, sodium and saturated fat faster than most people realize.

The good news? With a little menu strategy and a few smart swaps, you can enjoy a satisfying order without defaulting to the heaviest hitters.

To break down the menu, we spoke with two registered dietitians who know how to balance real life with real nutrition.

  • Kelsey Kunik, RD, is a freelance nutrition journalist and creator of Graciously Nourished, where she promotes a practical, no-guilt approach to eating. She focuses on helping people make sustainable food choices without demonizing favorite foods. You can also find her on Instagram at @graciouslynourished.
  • Melissa Mitri, MS, RD, is a Connecticut-based registered dietitian, weight-loss expert, and communicator with a sustainable approach to building healthy nutrition habits. Through her virtual private practice, Melissa Mitri Nutrition, she supports clients in navigating weight loss with a practical, personalized approach. Mitri is known for translating complex nutrition science into clear, actionable guidance and is a trusted voice on topics ranging from metabolism and body composition to GLP-1 support and long-term weight maintenance.
What Are the Unhealthiest Items at Taco Bell?1. Cheesy Double Beef Burrito

Courtesy Taco Bell

Taco Bell's Cheesy Double Beef Burrito is one of the menu items with the most sodium and saturated fat, according to both dietitians. It layers double seasoned beef, rice, nacho cheese, shredded cheeses, sour cream and crunchy strips into one tightly packed tortilla.

While delicious, Kunik notes that burrito-style items like this tend to be high in refined carbs, saturated fat and sodium. Nutrition data backs that up—it clocks in around 560 calories, 25 grams of fat and over 1,300 milligrams of sodium per serving—a hefty hit for a single item.

Mitri adds that meals like this can deliver more than half of the recommended daily sodium limit for many people in one sitting, making it easy to overshoot your daily limit without realizing it.

2. Grilled Cheese Burritos

Courtesy Taco Bell

The Grilled Cheese Burrito takes indulgence even further, doubling down on melted cheese—both inside and seared on the outside of the tortilla. That crispy cheese crust is part of its appeal, but also part of its nutritional downside.

Mitri points out that this item falls into the same category as other oversized burritos, often approaching 700 calories and high in fat and sodium. The combination of beef, sauces, rice and extra cheese creates a dense calorie load without much fiber or micronutrient balance.

Kunik adds that meals like this can be satisfying in the moment but tend to be lower in the nutrients that help keep you full long-term, like fiber and fresh vegetables.

3. Nachos Bell Grande

Courtesy Taco Bell

If there's a shareable item that quietly becomes a personal meal, it's the Nachos BellGrande. Loaded with chips, seasoned beef, nacho cheese, sour cream and tomatoes, it's a classic example of "everything on top of everything."

Mitri flags this item as one of the highest-calorie menu choices, with more than 700 calories and more than 1,100 milligrams of sodium, depending on customization. The fried chips and cheese-heavy toppings contribute to high saturated fat intake, while the portion size makes it easy to eat more than intended.

Kunik notes that fried bases paired with creamy sauces are a common fast-food pattern that quickly pushes meals into indulgent territory, with little fiber or balance to slow digestion or support fullness.

4. Other 'Loaded' Menu Items

Courtesy Taco Bell

Mitri adds that many "Grande," "Supreme" or "Stuft" burritos can easily stack up in calories, saturated fat and sodium, so it's important to note these commonly used phrases and names when searching the menu.

Also, pay attention to limited-time items that are "triple" or "double" in size or offer double or triple the meat, such as the Double and Triple Crunchwrap Supreme currently on the menu; these can add up in calories and saturated fat quickly.

What Do Dietitians Recommend Ordering at Taco Bell Instead?

Courtesy Taco Bell

Good news—you don't have to abandon Taco Bell to eat more mindfully.

Both dietitians recommend building meals around simpler, more balanced options. Kunik suggests choosing bowls instead of burritos when possible, as well as soft-shell tacos over fried shells. Adding beans, lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole boosts fiber and nutrients without going overboard on calories.

Mitri highlights Cantina-style items like the Chicken Cantina Soft Tacos or a straightforward beef taco. Even some burritos—like a basic chicken or bean version—can work if you skip the heavier add-ons and creamy sauces.

Are There Any Healthy Options at Taco Bell?

Courtesy Taco Bell

One menu standout, according to Kunik, is the Chicken Cantina Bowl. It combines lean chicken, black beans, avocado and vegetables for a balanced meal with about 24 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber, all under 500 calories. That's a solid option for staying full without feeling weighed down.

The Cantina menu is a nutritionally superior choice for dietitians, with Mitri also suggesting the Cantina Chicken Soft Taco, as it's lower in sodium and saturated fat than most other items. Bean- or chicken-based items or soft tacos can also be solid choices when you're aiming for a lighter meal that's still budget-friendly.

What Makes Certain Fast-Food Items Unhealthy?

It usually comes down to a few repeat offenders—deep-fried items, heavy cheese and sour cream add-ons, double meat options, large portion sizes and sodium-packed seasoning blends.

Mitri explains that fried shells, creamy dressings and cheese-heavy toppings significantly increase saturated fat and calorie content. Kunik echoes that these additional calorie-dense ingredients offer very little fiber or micronutrient value.

The result is food that's tasty and satisfying in the moment—but not very filling in a lasting, nutrient-dense way.

How Can You Make Taco Bell Orders Healthier? View this post on Instagram

The overarching message is that small tweaks go a long way.

Both experts recommend scaling back on add-ons and choosing simpler builds. Kunik suggests "Choosing bowls instead of burritos, soft shell tacos instead of fried shells and adding beans and fresh veggies like tomatoes, lettuce and guacamole can help you eat healthier at Taco Bell" for extra fiber and fullness.

Mitri adds that going "fresco style" can make a noticeable difference—swapping out cheese and creamy sauces for diced tomatoes reduces calories, fat and sodium without sacrificing flavor. "A simple bean or chicken burrito would be among the best choices," she says.

Luckily, with nutritional values posted on most menu items, you can use them as a guide to make more nutritious choices. Taco Bell's website goes beyond listing just calories and fat, offering a full nutrition breakdown that includes sodium, carbohydrates, protein and fiber—so you can make a more informed choice before you order.

In the end, Taco Bell doesn't have to be a nutritional gamble. With a few smart swaps, even a late-night drive-thru run can feel a little more balanced—and still totally satisfying.

Nancy Guthrie Exclusive: The Moment Brian Entin Realized the Case Was 'Worse' Than He Expected

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 10:09am

Nancy Guthrie has been missing for 90 days and, according to NewsNation's Brian Entin, authorities don't have a suspect or any "solid leads" in the case. As the investigation continues, Parade spoke with Entin, who has been covering the case since the beginning.

In the interview, Entin and I discussed how Guthrie’s disappearance—and everything that’s followed—has felt like a movie.

"I still don't understand. How does an 84-year-old woman literally just vanish from her bed?" Entin says. "I think the mystery of it all, too, people are just sort of infatuated with."

One moment, however, stood out as especially chilling for Entin.

"When the pictures came out. When the FBI put out the pictures of the suspect in the mask, with the gloves on at the front door. That's what I said, too. This actually feels like a horror movie. This is worse than I even expected," Entin says.

After the photos were released—about two weeks after Guthrie's disappearance—authorities received thousands of tips. Unfortunately, none of those tips have led to an arrest. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the FBI (1-800-CALL-FBI).

Although Entin is no longer staying in Arizona, he is still covering the Guthrie case. He will be hosting a new television special, NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery, that will air on the CW on Wednesday, May 6, at 9 p.m. Eastern.

‘Bewitched’ Star Erin Murphy Dazzles in Rare Red Carpet Appearance With Her Twin Sister

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 10:09am

Bewitched star Erin Murphy and her sister Diane made a rare public appearance to celebrate a new movie. In a post to Facebook on May 1, Erin, 61, posed with her twin on the red carpet for a special screening of the Lifetime movie Love, Again. The movie, which will premiere on May 9, 2026, stars Valerie Bertinelli and Eric McCormack as a couple who find an unexpected love later in life.

In the photo, Erin wore a dark green maxi dress while her sister wore an aqua-colored blouse and black slacks. The two posed on the red carpet in front of a Lifetime banner.

“Fun night at the Love, Again screening with my sis,” the Bewitched alum captioned the photo.

Erin also posted a second selfie-style photo from inside the screening room, which she captioned to explain why the sisters were in attendance at the premiere.  “We had a great time at the Love, Again screening at the Television Academy,” the former child star wrote. “I’m a voting member for the Emmys and they have tons of events with great food and Q & A’s with the actors.”

Diane Murphy usually stays out of the spotlight

In 1966, fraternal twins Erin and Diane were cast in the role of Tabitha, the magical daughter of Darrin and Samantha Stephens (Dick York, Elizabeth Montgomery) on the hit ABCsitcomBewitched. Erin ultimately remained on the series until its end in 1972, while Diane bowed out after 21 episodes. Not only did the twins begin to look less alike as they got older, but Diane wasn’t as interested in acting as Erin was.

In a 2025 interview with Celebrity Drop, Erin said she sometimes secretly did “double duty” on the Bewitched set, unbeknownst to the welfare worker tasked with enforcing the child labor laws.

Of her sister, Erin added, “[Show business] is not for everybody. I mean not everybody likes the lights and the camera and the attention and all that. It’s a lot. And she's not like that."

"She's more reserved," Erin said of Diane. "She's, you know, quieter than I am. And she works in medical writing. She's done that for many years, and she's very successful at it. And we're close as can be, but as different as two people could be as well.”

Chocolate Brown Is a Trending Neutral for Spring—Here’s How I’ve Styled It 5 Different Ways

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 10:09am

Spring always brings a bit of a style identity crisis. One day it’s cold enough for layers, the next it’s warm enough to reconsider everything in your closet. The same goes for color—winter’s deeper tones can start to feel too heavy, while anything overly light or bright can feel slightly out of place. Getting dressed becomes less about instinct and more about trial and error.

Thankfully, one shade has been quietly cutting through all of that: chocolate brown. It’s rich without feeling heavy, neutral without feeling flat and somehow manages to work across temperatures in a way most colors don’t. Often considered a softer alternative to black, it adds depth and warmth while still feeling grounded and easy to wear.

"What I love about chocolate brown is how effortless it feels," says celebrity stylist Ana Brillembourg, who has collaborated with brands like Moncler and Bottega Veneta. "It gives you depth without trying too hard." That ease is exactly what makes it work for spring. The key is in how you style it—balancing it with lighter textures, softer tones and pieces that keep it from feeling too wintery.

So, I tried to figure out how to style the popular color by putting it to the test with five different chocolate brown outfit ideas to see how it actually translates day to day. Spoiler alert: I discovered some of my new favorite styles. Read on for the looks that made chocolate brown feel like the most wearable neutral of the season.

Is Chocolate Brown Considered a Neutral Color?

Chocolate brown is having a bit of a rebrand moment—and yes, it absolutely qualifies as a neutral. As Brillembourg tells Parade, it has "the same versatility as black or navy but feels softer and a bit more elevated," which is exactly why it’s resonating right now. It anchors an outfit the way a classic neutral should, but without the sharpness that can sometimes come with darker shades. Instead, it adds depth while still feeling warm and approachable, making it especially easy to wear as the seasons shift.

That flexibility is what really seals the deal. New York City fashion stylist Rachel Newman notes that it "functions well as a ‘go-with-everything’ choice and acts as a great base for a multitude of different colors, prints and patterns," which means it plays nicely with everything from crisp whites to soft pastels and even bolder hues. In practice, it works less like a statement color and more like the foundation of a look; the piece that quietly pulls everything together while letting the rest of your outfit do its thing.

Is Chocolate Brown Trending in 2026?

Short answer: very much so. Chocolate brown is stepping into the spotlight as fashion leans into richer, more grounded tones, and as Brillembourg explains, it "fits perfectly into that movement," offering something that feels "warm, sophisticated and a little more directional than the classic neutrals."

Chocolate brown is no longer reserved for fall layers or winter knits—this shade is showing up everywhere, from sharp tailoring to breezy resort wear, proving it has far more range than people once gave it credit for.

What’s really driving the trend is its new seasonless appeal. Durand Guion, Senior Vice President, Fashion Office at Burlington Stores, notes that chocolate brown has been "a strong trend color for the second year in a row," but the bigger shift is how it’s being worn now. "Deeper shades of brown are now seasonless," he explains, meaning they carry just as much weight in spring and summer as they do in colder months.

That shift is already showing up in real time, with chocolate tones becoming a go-to styling choice for festival dressing, proving this isn’t a fleeting moment—it’s a full-on rotation in how neutrals are defined.

5 Chocolate Brown Outfit Ideas: How To Style the Popular Color1. Monochromatic look

Courtesy Alyssa Rotunno

I wanted to start with a monochromatic look because it’s one of the easiest ways to make chocolate brown (or, really, any color) feel intentional in the right way. Instead of overthinking the set, I leaned fully in, styling a Beyond Nine Mabel Linen Barrel Leg Trousers ($174) and their Elodie Linen Top ($96), which felt relaxed but still pulled together.

Newman says she’s "always a huge proponent of a monochromatic look, regardless of the season," and I get why. It instantly creates a sense of cohesion, and with a color like this, it feels rich without being overwhelming. And for spring, choosing a lighter fabric like linen makes all the difference—it keeps the look breathable and stops the deeper tone from feeling too heavy.

What made this outfit really work was playing with simplicity rather than over-styling it. Newman recommends keeping things "pared back," which is exactly the mindset here—keep the palette consistent, let the shapes and textures do the work. I finished it with a classic white Diadora Trainer leather sneaker to break things up just enough and give it that off-duty feel (and if you want to lean in to that casual feel, some EYEBUYDIRECT Valmont Sunglasses ($56) really add to the vibe). It felt easy but still elevated, and made me realize how wearable chocolate brown actually is. No second thoughts.

2. Styled with white

Courtesy Alyssa Rotunno

This look instantly clicked for me. I paired a chocolate brown American Eagle Halter Top ($26.21, originally $34.95) with Silver Jeans Co. High-Rise Slim Barrel-Leg Jeans in an ecru color, and finished it with easy clog-style shoes (which are from Primark—one of the few places I can reliably find a size 10 shoe that’s actually cute). The whole thing felt fresh in a way I wasn’t expecting.

Newman explains that pairing chocolate brown "with crisp white instantly freshens it for spring," and the lighter denim acted as that contrast, breaking up the richness and making everything feel more seasonal. It’s exactly that balance that makes chocolate brown work right now (aka, it's grounding, but not heavy).

What I liked most about this outfit is how easy it felt to recreate. The top adds just enough structure with its halter shape (and shows off my collar bones!), while the barrel-leg jeans bring in a relaxed, slightly directional silhouette that keeps it from feeling basic. My biggest tip is to keep the palette clean and let one piece do the talking. Whether that’s swapping in a white button-down, darker denim or even white accessories, it’s that contrast that makes chocolate brown feel spring-ready instead of fall-coded.

3. Brown and denim

Courtesy Alyssa Rotunno

I didn’t expect this to be one of my favorite combinations, but it ended up feeling the most natural to wear. There’s something about throwing on denim that instantly relaxes an outfit—and pairing it with chocolate brown gives it just enough edge to feel considered.

I went with a Solmar Basic Ribbed-Knit Polo Jumper and Urban Outfitters BDG Baggy Barrel Jeans ($69), which created that high-low mix I’m always drawn to. As Brillembourg notes, "chocolate brown softens denim and makes it feel more refined," and you can really see that shift happen here. It takes what could feel overly casual and gives it a bit more intention.

The trick here is balance. The top keeps things clean and close to the body, while the jeans bring volume and a slightly undone feel that makes the outfit interesting. Brillembourg points out that a "clean, straight-leg jean... keeps the look polished but still easy," and even though I leaned into a looser silhouette, the same principle holds—denim should feel deliberate, not accidental.

I added a statement red kitten heel to sharpen it up, but this is one of those outfits that can flex depending on your day. It works because the brown grounds everything, while the denim keeps it from ever feeling too serious or styled.

4. Layered with soft neutrals

Courtesy Alyssa Rotunno

This one felt undeniably spring—florals are part of the equation (of course), but styled this way, they feel fresh instead of predictable. The chocolate brown Popilush Shapewear Seamless Modal Henley Tank Bodysuit ($55) paired with a soft, patterned midi skirt created this really easy balance—nothing felt too loud, but it still had personality. There’s a quiet contrast happening here that makes the outfit feel interesting without trying too hard, almost like it’s doing more than it looks like it is at first glance.

The skirt itself does a lot of the work through movement, so I kept everything else intentionally simple. I finished it with Haviana's Slim Square Flip Flops ($40) to keep it relaxed, and if you want to level up the look, a denim jacket —like ShowPo's Ruby Jacket ($58, originally $119.95)—always pairs nicely with florals.

Brillembourg explains that layered neutrals like this create "a tonal, effortless palette," and you really feel that when the pieces aren’t competing. Newman also talks about pairing chocolate brown with lighter or pastel-adjacent tones, and letting accessories stay in the same color family, which is exactly what makes this formula so wearable for spring. It’s the kind of outfit that lets colors sit comfortably next to each other, relying on harmony and texture.

5. Keep it cool

This look is the one I keep coming back to when I want chocolate brown to feel effortless for spring without losing its richness. I built the outfit around an Express Gold Button V-Neck Sweater Vest ($58.50, originally $70) and paired it with Lee's Legendary Trouser Jeans ($54.99). There’s an easy contrast happening here that makes it all work—the brown reads grounded and warm, while the dark denim brings in that sophisticated yet relaxed energy that spring styling always benefits from. What I love the most is how the vest gives structure without feeling heavy, especially thanks to the open neckline and sleeveless cut, which keeps everything light enough for transitional weather.

The goal was to let each piece do a different job. The sweater vest sits close to the body, which instantly sharpens the silhouette and keeps the chocolate brown feeling intentional rather than weighty. And the jeans bring in that elongated, wide-leg shape that moves easily and keeps the outfit from feeling too buttoned-up, especially with the soft crease running through the leg.

Then I finished it with Bearpaw Colette Platform Sandals ($69.99), which ground the look while still adding a bit of lift, making the whole outfit feel ready for anything from a casual workday to late-afternoon plans. It’s that sweet spot where chocolate brown takes the edge off lighter spring fabrics and makes denim feel a little more elevated, without ever losing that easygoing energy. A total win-win.

2011 Book by an ‘SNL’ Legend, Which Sold Millions of Copies, Named No. 1 Funniest Memoir

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 9:56am

Goodreads users have put together a list of the funniest memoirs, which contain books from well-known comedians like Chelsea Handler, Ellen DeGeneres, and Kathy Griffin. Coming in at the very top of the list is an autobiography written by a comedy legend.

Bossypants is a 2011 memoir written by Tina Fey, who played Liz Lemon on 30 Rock and starred on SNL from 1997 to 2006. The audiobook version of the novel, narrated by the star herself, was Grammy-nominated. It went on to sell over 3 million copies and remained at the top of the The New York Times Best Seller list for five weeks in a row.

The memoir detailed Fey’s journey from being a young child with dreams of becoming a comedian on television to those dreams becoming a reality. In addition to her iconic roles on SNL and 30 Rock, Fey also appeared in hits like Mean Girls, Baby Mama, and Date Night.

Fey is also a writer and producer who created the television series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and the musical adaptation of Mean Girls, which ran on Broadway and secured her a Tony Award nomination.

Whether or not you’re a fan of the comedian’s past work, you can enjoy her book. As one Goodreads reader, who gave the book five stars, said, “I didn't really know who Tina Fey was when I picked it up. I had a dim awareness of her being one of the SNL people, and an actress. But that's it. I also didn't know she was in charge of 30 Rock. (A show I've seen exactly one episode of.) So I didn't come into this book as a fan. I became a fan by listening to it. I'm probably one of the few people that's going to start watching the show because of the book, rather than the other way around.”

Also making the list of best memoirs were Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling and Yes Please by Fey’s most prominent comedy partner, Amy Poehler.

1978 Hit Disco Track Ranked Among ‘Greatest Dance Songs of All Time’ Won an Oscar 47 Years Ago

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 9:51am

Donna Summeris inarguably the queen of disco music, and released a track in 1978 for a musical comedy that became a genre sensation. With the help of her regular collaborator Giorgio Moroder, they released a hit track that didn't top the charts, but did earn an even bigger award: an Oscar.

Thank God It's Fridaywas a musical comedy produced by Motown Pictures during the height of the disco era. It told several intertwining stories of the patrons and staff of a groovy Los Angeles disco club called The Zoo over the course of a Friday night. The film wasn't a jaw-dropping box office success, but it had a stellar cast. Jeff Goldblum played the leading role of Tony Di Marco in one of his earliest performances, alongside Debra Wingeras Jennifer in her first major on-screen appearance.

What also made the film stand out was its musical stars playing leading roles. Berlin's Terri Nunn played Jeannie in her only film role, with Summer also appearing as Nicole Sims, an aspiring disco singer. While Thank God It's Friday featured the Commodores performing "Too Hot to Trot," it was Summer's "Last Dance" that received critical acclaim.

"Last Dance" came about due to Summer's role in the film, seeing as her character brings a demo version of the track to the club's disc jockey, hoping to perform it. Throughout the film, the disc jockey refuses until the film's final moments, leading to a sensational performance by Summer. The track ended up entering the Billboard Hot 100 charts and peaking at No. 3, and stayed in the Top 10 for several weeks.

Related: This Beloved 1972 Soft Rock Song Hit No. 1—and Still Feels Timeless

Rolling Stone ranked the track at No. 200 of the "Greatest Dance Songs of All Time," showcasing that disco was "ready to jump the shark" at the time. "Last Dance" was also a first in the disco genre for its ballad-style opening that switches gears into a dynamic dance fever.

According to the song's arranger, Bob Esty, songwriter Paul Jabara was the one to have convinced Summer to record the track. Some drama ensued, according to Esty, who helped rearrange the entire track alongside Summer. Despite Moroder not liking the track or the idea of Summer singing in full vocal, Esty believed he'd receive co-producing and co-writing credit.

Instead, the credit went to only Jabara, who would win an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Last Dance" in 1979. He also won a Golden Globe in the same category, along with a  Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Song. The track also earned Summer her first of many Grammys in the category Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female.

The #1 COVID Symptom People Are Ignoring Right Now, According to Doctors

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 9:50am

Breaking news: COVID-19 is still going around right as allergy season is to starting wreak havoc on our sinuses, giving our upper respiratory systems a double whammy of discomfort. What makes this particularly tricky is that a lot of COVID symptoms overlap with allergies.

Many people who get COVID-19 infections in the spring ignore one particular symptom that they mistake for hay fever: The dreaded sore throat.

It's not too surprising: As someone who sounds like Fran Drescher and Jeezy's cursed love child if I'm outside on a high-pollen count day for 10 minutes, it's easy to dismiss a scratchy throat this time of year as run-of-the-mill allergies. However, if you're in a particularly at-risk group—for example, if you have asthma, a compromised immune system, other pulmonary or heart issues or are on the "older and wiser" side—ignoring a sore throat can be dangerous.

Great. We know!

So how can you tell the difference between trees, grass, flowers, weeds and the general beauty of spring versus a potentially deadly virus making your throat hurt? Grab your lozenges and read on to find out.

Is a COVID Sore Throat Different From a Normal Sore Throat?

The answer is, it depends. A COVID sore throat can be different from sore throats from other causes, but it isn't always.

Dr. Carlos Zambrano, MD, infectious disease specialist at Loretto Hospital in Chicago, tells Parade that some patients are still experiencing the super-painful "razor blade throat" that first emerged last June. The razor blade throat often feels like a sharp, stabbing pain in the back of the throat.

"There has been some anecdotal evidence of a sore throat being more prominent with the recent Stratus strain of COVID," Dr. Michael J. Davis, DO, MPH, infectious disease specialist at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Ind., explains. "When experienced, the sore throat will be more severe in the early stages of the infection; however, it typically will improve over a few days. It’s expected to show a similar trajectory as other cases of viral pharyngitis."

However, most of the time, the sore throat you get with a coronavirus infection will feel pretty much the same as one you'd get from being outside on a pollen-heavy day.

"There are so many variations of sore throats," Dr. Tyler Smith, Ph.D., statistical epidemiologist and professor at National University, explains. "Some report their sore throats are terribly scratchy, burning and cause significant pain from swallowing. Many infectious diseases present the same way, depending on the bug and the person."

"COVID sore throat feels similar to other viral sore throats and usually comes with other symptoms (fatigue, congestion, headache)," Dr. Subhash Verma, MD, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and immunology at University of Nevada, Reno, says. "There is no specific throat sensation that confirms COVID."

When it comes to telling the difference between a COVID sore throat and a run-of-the-mill one, Dr. Steven Goldberg, MD, MBA,primary care physician and chief medical officer at HealthTrackRx, says, "Honestly, not in a way most people can reliably tell apart on their own. A COVID sore throat tends to be a scratchy, raw, irritated feeling—often described as more of a 'dry burn'—and it typically comes alongside other symptoms like fatigue, body aches or congestion."

What makes COVID sore throat particularly sneaky is that it can be the only prominent symptom early on, or it can look exactly like allergies or a common cold, so people dismiss it. "Sore throat has become one of the most common COVID-19 symptoms in the Omicron era—reported in 60% to 86% of infections—yet it's also one of the least specific, meaning it doesn't reliably distinguish COVID-19 from other causes," Dr. Goldberg says.

He added that there is one type of sore throat that you may be able to discern specifically from allergies and COVID, however: Strep throat. He explains, "A strep throat, by contrast, tends to come on very suddenly with severe pain, high fever, swollen and/or tender lymph nodes in the neck and sometimes white patches on the tonsils—and notably, strep usually does not come with cough, runny nose or congestion."

How Can I Tell the Difference Between COVID Symptoms and Seasonal Allergy Symptoms?

"The only way to differentiate COVID symptoms from allergies, influenza, RSV or even
the common cold, is testing, really," Dr. S. Wesley Long, MD, PhD., director of diagnostic microbiology at Houston Methodist Hospital, tells Parade. "There are combination tests for COVID and flu A/B available now over the counter. If they are negative, then you may want to talk to your doctor about your symptoms, which could be allergies, strep throat or a common cold."

That said, there are things to look out for. "Look at the pattern: It is more likely to be COVID if it comes with fever, fatigue, body aches, headache and possible GI symptoms," Dr. Verma adds.

Dr. Goldberg agrees, noting that there are a few symptoms specific to allergies that may help you tell which condition is causing you to feel crummy.

"Beyond testing, there are some practical clues," Dr. Goldberg says. "Allergies tend to cause itchy eyes, itchy nose, sneezing, and clear watery nasal discharge—and they do not cause fever, body aches or significant fatigue."

COVID, even mild cases, more commonly bring fatigue, muscle aches, and sometimes fever or chills alongside the upper respiratory symptoms. "A few rules of thumb: Itchiness (eyes, nose, throat) strongly favors allergies. Body aches, fatigue or fever favor COVID or another infection. New-onset symptoms that feel different from one's usual allergy pattern warrant a COVID test," he emphasizes.

Are COVID Treatments and Allergy Treatments the Same?

Not always. "Sometimes yes, sometimes no,"Dr. Andrew Benin, MD, primary care physician and co-founder of BeninMed, tells Parade. "Symptomatic treatment has some overlap: Rest, hydration, over-the-counter meds if needed, such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc. Paxlovid, an anti-viral therapy, is still sometimes prescribed if COVID is caught early in our more high-risk patients."

"There’s some overlap in symptom relief, but the treatments aren’t identical," Dr. Long agrees. "Simple measures like warm fluids, salt water gargles, rest, hydration and over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease a sore throat, whether it’s caused by COVID or allergies. However, the underlying treatments differ, and allergies are typically managed with antihistamines, nasal sprays and avoiding triggers, while COVID, especially in high-risk individuals, may require antiviral medications."

Testing is important when determining how to treat your sore throat, Dr. Snehal Smart, MD, patient advocate at the Mesothelioma Center, advises.

"Some sore throats can be due to Strep A, which is a bacterium, while COVID is a virus. Bacterial infections require antibiotics and viral infections require antivirals," she says. "Antibiotics would not help with COVID. However, over-the-counter pain relievers, hydration and soothing remedies can help manage the symptoms for both COVID and other sore throats."

Further, if you have severe symptoms, please don't try to battle them alone.

Dr. Charles Bailey, MD, medical director for infection prevention at Providence St. Joseph Hospital and Providence Mission Hospital in Southern Calif., urges, "Medical attention should be sought if symptoms such as sore throat or cough are severe or not well-controlled by over-the-counter symptomatic medications (as this might indicate a cause that would benefit from targeted prescription treatment) and especially if shortness of breath or chest discomfort develop, as these symptoms are suggestive of possible pneumonia."

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Rumors Rocked Derby Odds—But the Situation Has Shifted

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 9:31am

The first Saturday in May hosts the Kentucky Derby, bringing out some of the biggest stars from Hollywood celebrities to well-known athletes. And while many fans are wondering if Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce will make their Derby debut at Churchill Downs later on today, the power duo has impacted racing odds.

According to Fox Sports, rumors that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have a 10% ownership stake in Derby contender “The Puma” have influenced the betting odds for today's race. Speculation about "The Puma" hit a fever pitch when the horse's co-owner, Michael Iavarone, took to Instagram with a photo of the colt with the following caption.

"OK people. Everyone asking me if Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are partners on The Puma… all I can say is I signed an NDA, so I can’t confirm or deny," he wrote, according to the outlet.

As of Saturday morning, however, The Puma—listed at 10-1—had scratched.

"We discovered some swelling in his leg due to a skin infection,” trainer Gustavo Delgado said, according to the Courier Journal. "It’s incredibly disappointing, but the swelling should go down within a day or two. It’s just really bad timing."

Delgado said that The Puma is likely out of the upcoming Preakness (May 16) as well.

Although it's still not clear whether Kelce and Swift have any stake in "The Puma," Kelce does own a share in a racehorse. In 2024, he purchased "Swift Delivery" alongside the Zoldan family. The horse, trained by Mark E. Casse, will not be racing in the 2026 Kentucky Derby.

2 NBC Shows, Including an Underrated Fan-Favorite Comedy, Have Been Quietly Canceled

Sat, 05/02/2026 - 9:26am

Two NBC shows have been quietly canceled. Brilliant Minds, the medical drama starring Zachary Quinto, is ending after two seasons. The series, which was inspired by novels written by Oliver Sacks, was about a neurologist and his team of interns who tackle rare, psychological cases at Bronx General Hospital. The final episodes will air this summer.

"The conversation around network versus streaming has shifted," Quinto said in a 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly. "And the industry has experienced a return to [a type of] television it had departed pretty significantly from. There's something about the reliability of [network procedurals]. Audiences are more interested in appointment television than they were for a little while." Unfortunately, even though Brilliant Minds drew in many fans, it did not last on the network.

NBC has also announced that the mockumentary, Stumble, is coming to an end after a single season. The series, which starred Jenn Lyon and Taran Killam with appearances by Kristin Chenoweth, was a laugh-out-loud comedy about a college cheer squad. Its final episode aired in March 2026.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Both shows were among NBC’s least watched scripted series of the season. With seven days of linear viewing (i.e., before streaming), Brilliant Minds averaged just above 3 million viewers, a smaller total than any other drama on the network this season. Stumble, meanwhile, came in at 2.24 million viewers.”

Fans of both shows have expressed disappointment at the cancellations, with some wishing that comedies like Stumble were advertised more. As one commenter on Reddit said, “I literally only found out about [Stumble] because of fans begging for it to not get canned.” Another said, “So angry about Stumble. We don’t need any more hospital or detective shows. Give us comedy!”

Many are hoping that just because NBC has canceled their beloved shows doesn’t mean that they are gone forever. As one person said, “Praying [Stumble] goes on another streaming service so it gets the views it deserves and hopefully gets picked up.”

Although these two NBC shows are coming to an end, there should be more new shows in the near future. NBC has ordered eight pilots, which is more than usual, which could be coming to your screen soon.
