There are lots of things people turn to to help them focus. They might strive for a clutter-free desk or set a timer as they work for a certain amount of time. And then there are those of us who need background noise to focus on a task, whether it’s a Spotify playlist, coffee-house chatter or white noise. There’s something about background sounds that help you get into the zone. 

Although there can be many types of people who require something in the background while they work, the preference does tend to vary among age groups. For instance, according to 2019 research from Poly, more than half of the Gen Z individuals surveyed said they’re most productive when they’re working around noise in an office, while 60% of Baby Boomers said that they’re most productive when it’s quiet.

People who need background noise to get their work done can have specific personality traits, and ahead, a psychologist details those common characteristics.

Why Is Background Noise Beneficial to Some People?

Licensed psychologist Lienna Wilson says that one of the evolutionary functions of our nervous system is to be on the lookout for stimuli (i.e., sights, noises) that present danger. 

“Even when you are relaxing and quietly reading a book, your brain is scanning for subtle noises that might present danger,” she tells Parade. “Imagine how you would react if you suddenly heard a firetruck siren outside, while you are quietly reading a book. The more you pay attention to external stimuli, the more difficult it is to focus.”

As a result, she says that background noise, such as white noise, helps eliminate intruding sounds, making it easier for the brain to focus on the task at hand or to relax—that’s why some people use background noise to fall asleep.

Mental Health Conditions and Background Noise

There are certain mental health conditions that are tied to needing background noise. For example, Dr. Wilson says that people who have anxiety often don’t like to sit in silence. 

“Since their mind often races, silence can exacerbate their racing thoughts and can bring a lot of unwanted intrusive thoughts to the surface. White noise can help them calm their minds,” she explains. 

“Additionally, people who have ADHD, especially the inattentive presentation, are typically more easily distracted by outside noises. Stable background noise, like white noise, can eliminate those unwanted distractions,” she adds. 

Dr. Wilson also observes that since people on the autism spectrum tend to be very sensitive to sounds, they may benefit from consistent background noise, like white or brown noise, to mask distracting environmental sounds. But there is a caveat. 

“Even a consistent background noise may be too stimulating for some individuals on the spectrum, in which case they might prefer noise-canceling headphones,” she says. 

And lastly, Dr. Wilson says that people with bipolar disorder who are in the manic state may be more sensitive and can be easily bothered by various noises. 

“That’s why having stable background noise, like white noise, can help in those situations,” she explains.

Dr. Wilson points out that people who are creative tend to dislike repetitive tasks and find them boring. “Having some background noise, like your favorite soundtrack, can make boring tasks more tolerable,” she says.

“People who are high-energy and who like to move around as opposed to sitting quietly tend to prefer background noise,” Dr. Wilson says.

3. You’re adaptable

If you prefer to have some background noise, you might be a lot more flexible than the average person. As Dr. Wilson says, “People who are flexible tend to be adaptable to various situations, like loud neighbors or living next to a train station. During the time of building their adaptability toolkit, they typically incorporate background noises that tend to block out the unwanted sounds.”

4. You’re a multitasker

You likely excel at multitasking. Dr. Wilson says, “People who like to multitask tend to enjoy background noise. They are used to quickly moving from one task to the next, and silence can make them feel that it’s slowing them down.”

5. You’re extroverted

“Some people by nature are more extroverted and are looking for frequent social stimulation and interactions,” Dr. Wilson says. “They may have a difficult time tolerating complete silence and tend to gravitate towards background noise, such as music or TV in the background.”

6. You grew up in a loud family

You may have grown up “in a large, loud family,” as Dr. Wilson says, who adds that you may crave a reminder of what feels familiar and comforting and often gravitate to having background noise. 

7. You’re afraid to be alone

“There are some people who are afraid to be alone because it brings up acute feelings of loneliness,” Dr. Wilson says. “Having background noise in those cases can help.”

Other Things That Help Focus

If you’ve tried background noise and it doesn’t seem to help you focus, you may just need the opposite—in this case, you may need to block out distracting sounds through noise-canceling headphones or earplugs, as Dr. Wilson recommends. 

“Additionally, some people really benefit from reducing clutter in their work area,” she says. “When the work environment is visually cluttered, it can be visually distracting and can increase anxiety because it may become more difficult to find certain things that you need for your project. Creating a clean, organized desk space can help with mental focus.”

Or you just may need a change of scenery. 

“Sometimes, a change of location can be really helpful,” Dr. Wilson says. “If you find that you cannot concentrate at home because you are easily distracted by certain tasks or people, you may benefit from going to a coffee shop. If the noise starts to bother you, try going to a local library or another quiet location.”

When Background Noise Becomes a Problem

Although background noise can be helpful to many people, there are those times when it actually becomes detrimental to your productivity. You may notice that your need for background noise starts to interfere with your life—it can become a coping mechanism for poor focus, it could throw off your deep focus or the wrong type of noise (i.e. loud rock music) might negatively affect your productivity. 

Other negative outcomes may include, as Dr. Wilson says: “You always need background music while you work, but you forgot your headphones at home, and you have not been able to concentrate all day. Or perhaps your co-workers are starting to complain that you are always wearing headphones, and therefore seem unavailable when they need to speak with you.”

For this, Dr. Wilson advises seeking a mental health consultation.  

“A consultation with a mental health professional can help determine whether you have a condition that drives you to seek background noise, or help you develop other coping skills when you don’t have access to background noise,” she says.

In 1979, a song with an irresistible groove and unforgettable hook took over the chartsand held on long enough to become one of the longest-running hits of the deacde.

"Ring My Bell," performed by Anita Ward, became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it debuted in the top spot and remained for two weeks. It went on to stay at the top of Billboard R&B Chart for 5 weeks, cementing its place among the longest-running chart-toppers of the era.

Written by Frederick Knight, the track was originally intended for a younger audience, but it ultimately found its voice through Ward's smooth, confident delivery. With its blend of disco rhythms, shimmering instrumentation and a now-iconic electronic drum sound, the song captured the energy of late-'70s dance floors at their peak.

"I personally didn’t like the song," Ward confessed to WREG. "But I like ballads." Fortunately for Ward, she decided to record the song anyway.

"Ring My Bell" quickly became a global sensation, dominating radio airwaves and dance clubs alike. Its catchy chorus and upbeat tempo made it instantly recognizable, helping it stand out even in a crowded era filled with disco hits.

"I had started doing substitute teaching while we were waiting to see if the music was going to take off," Ward told Goldmine. "I didn't have to wait very long. I subbed for four months and then the song went gold after two weeks."

One Mission: Impossible icon is recovering after a medical scare that took place during a family dinner in Los Angeles.

Actor Ving Rhames, 66, reportedly collapsed while dining at a restaurant on Wednesday afternoon. According to reports from TMZ, Rhames was seated with family members around 1:40 p.m. P.T. on April 29 when the incident occurred. 

The outlet stated that the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on the scene after receiving a call about a man in his 60s in distress and transported the actor to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

While the situation initially raised concern, Rhames’ representative later shared a reassuring update, suggesting the episode may have been caused by overheating. The actor is currently in stable condition and remains hospitalized for observation, but no rep has responded to Parade’s request for comment.

Rhames has spent years in Hollywood and played some legendary roles. He is best known for his role as Luther Stickell, the tech expert in the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise alongside Tom Cruise. He also played the character Marsellus Wallace in Quentin’ Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

Rhames also won a Golden Globe in 1998 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series for his role in Don King: Only in America.

Meryl Streep initially turned down the role of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. Then she came back with a counter-offer.

In a TODAY exclusive that aired Wednesday morning, Streep sat with Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci and walked Jenna Bush Hager through how the deal that produced the 2006 movie actually came together. She read the script, loved it and said no. Then she came back and asked for double her original salary. The studio agreed right away.

The Line Fans Seized On

The reveal that lit up social media was about timing. Streep was 56 when she made the original Prada, and she said it took her until that point in her career to realize she could use her leverage that way.

"I'm 56, it took me this long to understand that I can do that," Streep told the group.

It is a quietly radical thing for one of the most decorated actors in American film history to say out loud. Prada opened in June 2006 and went on to gross more than $326 million worldwide on a budget Streep has separately described as tight.

When life is getting you down, there's nothing like dancing your troubles away. That's why, over half a century after the disco took over the world, the genre is still surprisingly relevant...and some of the biggest hits of the disco era are still getting millions upon millions of streams. Case in point: Leo Sayer's classic "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing."

While "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing," was the first of Sayer's two #1 singles, Sayer didn't exactly expect the song to be his ticket to success. In fact, as Stereogum reported, he recorded the tune "on the spur of the moment" in the studio for his 1976 album Endless Flight, co-writing it with session musicians (including guitarist Ray Parker, Jr.).

When Harry Nilsson/Carly Simon producer Richard Perry told Sayer that "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" was destined to be the record's hit, Sayer didn't even remember recording it.

Maybe Sayer didn't remember recording "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" because he wasn't a big disco fan in the first place; in fact, he was quoted as saying "I hate disco music" in Fred Bronson's Billboard Book Of Number 1 Hits.

Whether Sayer liked the song or not, it was still a huge success. Not only did it go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 15, 1977 (where it stayed for one week), it even went on to win the 1978 Grammy for Best R&B Song despite never making an appearance on Billboard's R&B chart.

Leo Sayer's manager scammed him out of hundreds of thousands of dollars

Considering he had one of the biggest disco hits of all time, fans probably assume Sayer has had plenty of money in the bank all these years. Alas, as he explained in an interview last month with The Guardian, he was unfortunately swindled out of a massive sum by his manager, former pop star Adam Faith.

“Adam was an incredible mentor, it must be said," Sayer recalled. "I can’t forgive him for the things he did later, but in the early days he was incredible. He knew everybody, he could open doors. Guys like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, everybody looked up to him."

While Faith did play a huge role in making Sayer's career, they weren't always on the same page; as Sayer explained, "I always wanted to be an artist and he wanted me to be a pop star.”

Even worse, Faith took advantage of Sayer's naivety, convincing the singer to sign power of attorney over to him when they started working together.

“When he picked me up, he said: ‘Right, we’ve got to make this legal, so sign this otherwise we’re not going to get started.’ It was very gangster.”

Eventually, Sayer got himself a lawyer and the case was settled out of court for £650,000. Nowadays, he's doing just fine, earning a "nice crust from streaming, downloads and even the occasional record sale," in addition to touring. At the time of this writing, "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" has close to 200 million streams on Spotify alone.

The King of Pop lives on.

It was revealed by Luminate and reported by The Hollywood Reporter that the number of streams for Michael Jackson's discography went up 95% in the United States over the weekend, thanks to the release of the biopic Michael, which follows the rise of the "Thriller" singer's career and his start while in The Jackson 5.

On Spotify, the late pop star's monthly listener count jumped by five million from April 20 to this Wednesday, from just over 68 million to 75.6 million. In addition, The Jackson 5 gained a million monthly listeners during that same time frame, going from 8.7 million to 9.7 million.

The biopic, starring the "Beat It" singer’s real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson, traces Michael Jackson’s early years from the mid 1960s to the late 1980s — from his beginnings with his brothers in The Jackson 5 to his rise as a groundbreaking solo artist. The supporting cast also included Nia Long, Juliano Krue Valdi, KeiLyn Durrell Jones, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo.

Though Michael received poor reviews from critics and had various production problems, it achieved a record-breaking opening weekend at the domestic box office, earning $97 million this past weekend. The movie featured many of the late singer's most popular songs, including "Beat It," "Thriller," "Billie Jean," "Human Nature" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," as well as Jackson 5 classics such as "ABC" and "I'll Be There."

Michael gave director Antoine Fuqua the best opening of his career at the box office. In an interview with Deadline, Fuqua revealed that he had a very strong take on how the late pop star should be, and that he wanted to "humanize" him.

"I wanted people to get to know him: How eccentric he was, how he was as a young man," he explained to the publication on Sunday. "I always felt that younger generations didn't know Michael or his story. In order to tell anything about Michael, you had to remind people about the magic of him, the power of the music and the fun that he brought into the world and his own insecurities."

As Donaldson recalls, one day, while playing Xbox in his youth, he was randomly given the name "MrBeast6000." When he started to get into posting videos on YouTube, he decided to keep the moniker, albeit dropping the "6000." Thus, "MrBeast" was born.

When did MrBeast start posting videos?

Donaldson actually uploaded his first video on the MrBeast channel only when he was 13! Back in February 2012, his early work ran the gamut, from playthroughs of popular video games to videos estimating the net worth of other YouTubers to explanations on drama happening in the YouTube space at the time. Safe to say, it's a far cry from what he's known for doing now!

How did MrBeast become famous?

That is quite a loaded question! A few years into his channel, Donaldson began to pivot his content, focusing on audacious stunts. The first video that made him go viral, for example, consisted of him spending nearly an entire day counting to 100,000. Other early stunts include attempting to spend 24 hours underwater, and watching paint dry for an hour.

Of course, if you know the work of MrBeast, the more popular he got, the more ridiculous his stunts have gotten. By the time 2020 hit, he had become one of the most mainstream YouTubers, boosting his profile even more with events like holding a real-life version of Squid Game (before, of course, Netflix would do that themselves with Squid Game: The Challenge). As MrBeast has grown in popularity, he's involved increasingly famous people in his videos, including Stephen Curry, Serena Williams and Tom Brady.

Does MrBeast have a TV show?

Yes! In March 2024, it was announced that Donaldson and Amazon Studios would be partnering on a new reality show. The result is Beast Games, which has hundreds of contestants competing for $5 million, the biggest single prize in television history. The Prime Video series has so far ran for two seasons, and has been renewed through Season 4.

Was MrBeast on Survivor?

Yes! While Donaldson rarely makes TV appearances outside of Beast Games, he chose to make an exception for Survivor. He'll appear on Episode 10 of Season 50 of the iconic CBS reality series, dropping by to offer the remaining players a game-changing "MrBeast Super Beware Advantage."

What are the controversies around MrBeast?

Of course, being the most popular YouTuber on the planet, it's not surprising Donaldson and the MrBeast brand has attracted a fair amount of controversy around it over the years. Here's a list of what has come out so far:

• Over the course of May 2021, a series of employees came forward, alleging Donaldson was fostering a difficult work environment. Some former editors claimed they were berated almost daily, and that Donaldson's demeanor would shift when the cameras were off. Donaldson denied the accusations, insisting that their intention is to maintain high standards without creating toxicity.
• In September 2024, five contestants who were on BeastGames Season 1 filed a class action lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Donaldson and Amazon. They alleged that they were mistreated consistently while filming the show, including sexual harassment, unsafe conditions, unpaid expenses, and being pressured by production to sign illegal contracts and submit false paperwork to secure tax credits.
• In April 2026, former employee Lorrayne Mavromatis accused the company, "Beast Industries," of years of demanding treatment, sexual harassment, gender discrimination and even wrongful termination, claiming she was fired after she became a mother. Donaldson has denied the allegations.

Parenting isn’t easy. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a regular mom in the Midwest or a superstar celebrity athlete likeSerena Williams. 

Even though she’s won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, and four Olympic gold medals, Williams struggles with the same mommy-ing issues that the rest of us face. Serena is mom to two daughters—Alexis “Olympia” Ohanian, Jr. (born 2017) and Adira River Ohanian (born 2023) with her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. 

Case in point, Williams recently shared a poignant parenting post to X, writing, “I told my daughter to go to bed. She did not, therefore, she missed out on her sleepover. She cried. But what she did not know is I cried harder. I hate when she cries. Discipline sucks. But sometimes it’s important.”

Friends and fans took to X, applauding Williams and sharing their own experiences. One commenter wrote, “The greatest athlete of all time broken by a bedtime. You defeated every opponent on earth and a little girl in pajamas took her out…motherhood is humbling,” while another said, “A+ parenting, shoutout to you.” 

Plenty of parents commiserated with the mom, adding comments such as, “It sucks indeed but very important. We can’t avoid it,” “It does suck…but without it kids don’t learn boundaries. It’s our investment in them. Not to be popular Moms…but to be good Moms,” and, “Awww…I love that you’re sharing this! Many years ago my sister called me crying bc she had to follow through when she told her six-year-old that if she did something, she wouldn’t get to go to a sleepover. My niece did it, and so she had to miss the sleepover and was so upset. And my sister, her mom, was more so.” 

Of course, no post on social media is without its critics. And while most of the comments praised Williams, some shared a different view: “Why would she miss out? The sleep over wasn’t that night so you didn’t discipline you punished. You stopped ger going because she didn’t do as you asked.” 

Like other controversial topics, the naysayers sparked a bit of a backlash. Williams’ fans jumped in to defend the celebrity mom. One wrote, “What Serena Williams did was absolutely the proper way to discipline a child. I can tell you right now” and another added, “Soft parenting invited a host of ills. Good on Serena Williams. She knows, and you should pay attention.” 

It's a gift for a television showrunner to be able to end their series on their own terms, with a carefully-crafted finale that wraps up all the loose ends and serves as a fitting farewell to characters you've come to know and love throughout its run.

Sadly, not every show is given that benefit. In fact, some are forced to end abruptly, due to unexpected cancellations, production complications (hello, COVID pandemic) and more. That means unresolved cliffhangers, unknown character fates and a disappointing lack of closure for the viewers at home. Then there are shows that do get the grace of longevity, but creative decisions still leave fans feeling unsatisfied and unsettled once the credits roll.

From one-season series that deserved more time, to incredible TV dramas that fumbled their finales, here are 20 shows that ended on a cliffhanger and left fans with more questions than answers.

20 Shows That Ended on a Cliffhanger 1. 'Heroes' The cast of Heroes, the superhero drama that ended after four seasons in 2010.

NBC’s Heroes started off strong—the superhero drama’s first season was critically acclaimed, with the American Film Institute naming the sci-fi series one of the 10 "best television programs of the year." However, it lost that good favor by its fourth season (which has a paltry 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), a decrease in quality that prompted not only falling ratings, but also a premature cancellation by NBC in May 2010, three months after the Season 4 finale aired. 

That means that episode, entitled “Brave New World,” became a de facto series finale, ending with Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere) unexpectedly climbing atop a Ferris wheel inside Central Park and jumping off unscathed while news cameras looked on, revealing her powers to the public and proving the existence of evolved humans in the world. That reveal eventually set up the 2015 miniseries spinoff Heroes Reborn, but fans had to wait five years for the story to continue. 

2. 'A League of Their Own' Prime Video's A League of Their Own reboot was initially picked up for a second season, but the streamer later backpedaled.

Amazon's series adaptation of the beloved baseball movie of the same name, A League of Their Own on Prime Video similarly follows a group of women—played by Abbi Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D'Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez and Gbemisola Ikumelo, among others—chasing their dreams of playing professional baseball in the newfound All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II. Unlike the original film, though, the streaming series delved into queer romances, racial tensions and more of the players' personal lives.

Speaking of personal drama, the Season 1 finale saw a kiss between catcher Carson (Jacobson) and teammate Greta (Carden) spotted by Carson's husband, a juicy plot point to unfold in future episodes. However, Season 2 never materialized, with Amazon canceling its four-episode order due to delays caused by the WGA strike.

3. 'Southland' Ben McKenzie and Shawn Hatosy starred as police officers in the TNT crime drama Southland.

After Southland was canceled by NBC in October 2009, the Los Angeles-based crime drama was salvaged by TNT, where it would air for another four seasons. The gritty series stars Ben McKenzie, Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and C. Thomas Howell as LAPD patrol officers and detectives tasked with keeping the City of Angels safe—all while dealing with personal conflicts at home.

Dwindling ratings caused TNT to cancel the procedural in 2013, leaving behind a doozy of a cliffhanger: veteran officer John Cooper (Cudlitz) is tragically shot by his fellow police after suffering a mental breakdown and assaulting his neighbors over a loud generator. He lies bloody on the ground as the series ends, leaving one of the show's main characters' fate forever unknown.

4. 'The Wilds' The Wilds was canceled after two seasons on Prime Video, leaving things on an open-ended note.

We love a high-concept drama, and this Prime Video survivalist saga is certainly that, focused on a group of teenage girls (played by Sarah Pidgeon, Mia Healey, Erana James, Sophia Taylor Ali and Shannon Berry, among others) left stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash, only to horrifyingly find out that they didn't end up there by accident and are instead the subjects of a complex social experiment.

The problem with high concepts is what happens when they're canceled before they're fully finished, as was the case with The Wilds—Prime Video nixed the series in July 2022 after two seasons and left fans on a shocking reveal: that despite fleeing the "rescue" facility, the girls actually never left the island at all and a third phase of the twisted experiment was only just beginning.

5. 'Santa Clarita Diet' Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore in Santa Clarita Diet, which aired for three seasons on Netflix.

For three seasons, Netflix's horror-comedy Santa Clarita Diet dealt with suburban mom Sheila Hammond's (Drew Barrymore) hilariously gross transformation into a flesh-eating zombie, much to the terrified dismay of her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant) and their teenage daughter Abby (Liv Hewson). But in the Season 3 finale, it seemed like Sheila would be getting some undead company, as Joel began exhibiting the gory symptoms of zombiedom after receiving a bite from his wife.

Alas, fans won't get to see how that deadly development shakes up the family dynamic. The series ended on that cliffhanger after Netflix announced its cancellation on April 26, 2019.

6. 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Lena Headey starred in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which ran for two seasons on FOX.

Bringing James Cameron's Terminator franchise to TV land, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles starred Game of Thrones' Lena Headey as the titular action hero, with Thomas Dekker as her teenage son John. Together, they worked to prevent the creation of Skynet, an artificially intelligent computer system that would launch a nuclear war on humans and ultimately destroy the world as we know it.

Despite the cinematic clout of its IP, the FOX sci-fi drama failed to draw impressive ratings across its two seasons, leading the network to cancel it in May 2009. Fans launched a campaign urging FOX to renew the series for a third installment. It was fueled by frustration over the finale episode, "Born to Run," which saw John and Catherine Weaver (a T-1001 Terminator played by Shirley Manson) travel to the future, only to discover that no one there had heard of John Connor.

7. 'Angel' The Buffy spinoff Angel aired for five seasons on The WB before ending on a cliffhanger in 2004.

WhileBuffy the Vampire Slayerended on a satisfying high note—with the entire town of Sunnydale collapsing into the Hellmouth cavern—its spinoff series Angel didn't conclude so triumphantly. On February 14, 2004, The WB announced that the David Boreanaz-led supernatural drama would not be brought back for a sixth season, despite critical acclaim and solid ratings; that advance notice did allow Joss Whedon to rework the end of the season into a finale.

However, fans were still left exasperated by the ambiguous final moments of the series finale—"Not Fade Away"—which saw Angel (Boreanaz), Illyria (Amy Acker), Spike (James Marsters) and a wounded Gunn (J. August Richards) facing an army of supernatural creatures in an alley, their fates left unknown as the screen went black.

8. 'My So-Called Life' My So-Called Life starred Claire Danes (bottom center) as Angela Chase, an angsty and all-too-relatable American teen.

One of the best teen dramas of all time didn't last longer than a school year, with My So-Called Life canceled after just 19 episodes on May 15, 1995, despite great critical acclaim and award recognition. (A youngClaire Danestook home the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her relatably angsty turn as 15-year-old Angela Chase.)

And though the coming-of-age ABC series didn't have the high stakes of, say, a dystopian drama, it did manage to end on a suspenseful and heartbreaking note: Hoping to win back Angela's affections, Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto) enlists Brian Krakow (Devon Gummersall)—who has long harbored a crush on his friend Angela—to write a love letter to her. Angela eventually finds out that Brian actually wrote the heartfelt missive, leaving her conflicted between her feelings for the two boys.

9. 'Raised by Wolves' Not only did the sci-fi drama Raised by Wolves end on a cliffhanger, but it was also unceremoniously removed from the HBO Max platform.

Raised by Wolves began with quite a howl: The first two episodes of the HBO Max sci-fi drama—centered on two androids (Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim) tasked with raising human children on a mysterious exoplanet after Earth is ravaged by war—were directed by none other than filmmaking legend Ridley Scott.

Despite receiving positive response from critics and fans alike across its two seasons, the dystopian series got caught in corporate crossfire, with the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery leading to the show's untimely cancellation in June 2022. Even more shocking, all episodes of Raised by Wolves were removed from HBO Max later that year.

That means viewers will never find out what happens to Mother, who's left trapped in a VR simulation by Grandmother, or Marcus (Travis Fimmel), who's seen mysteriously levitating after having been crucified. And on top of that, they won't be able to revisit the series on HBO Max.

10. 'Popular' The cult-favorite teen comedy Popular had an unexpected series finale when it was canceled after its second season.

Long before Glee, Pose and American Horror Story, Ryan Murphymade his memorable TV debut with Popular, The WB's campy teen drama starring Leslie Bibband Carly Pope as two polar-opposite teen girls forced to coexist after their parents got married. Rounded out by Christopher Gorham, Sara Rue, Bryce Johnson, Leslie Grossman and Ron Lester, the soapy high-school melodrama amassed a small but dedicated fan base over the course of two seasons.

Alas, that passionate following didn't manifest into a Season 3 renewal and Popular was canceled in 2001, with that shocking season finale—in which Bibb's Brooke McQueen was run over by her drunk frenemy Nicole Julian (Tammy Lynn Michaels)—unexpectedly serving as the show's final episode.

11. 'Jericho' The post-apocalyptic action-drama Jericho ended abruptly due to low ratings.

The townsfolk of Jericho, Kansas already had plenty of post-apocalyptic drama to deal with over the course of the show's freshman season, after a cross-country nuclear explosion upended the once-peaceful Midwestern enclave and left Americans scrambling for scarce resources, social stability and overall survival.

Speaking of survival, the CBS series was able to fight back from the brink of cancellation after Season 1 thanks to a fervent fan campaign. Viewers sent over 20 tons of peanuts to CBS headquarters in reference to a popular show quote—only for the series to be axed yet again after its shortened seven-episode sophomore season. The series ultimately ended on a cliffhanger, with Jake (Skeet Ulrich) and Hawkins (Lennie James) successfully smuggling the remaining nuclear bomb across enemy lines and effectively setting up a civil war between the Allied States of America and the Republic of Texas.

12. 'Stargate Universe' Syfy series Stargate Universe ended on a semi-cliffhanger, though a comic book eventually wrapped up its storylines.

Stargate Universe executive producer Joseph Mallozzi originally conceived of "Gauntlet" merely as the show's Season 2 finale. However, that changed on Dec. 16, 2010, when the Syfy network announced that it would not be picking up SGU for a third season due to low ratings and high production costs, unexpectedly rendering "Gauntlet" the series' finale episode.

That means the show ended on an open-ended note for the crew of the Destiny, who enter stasis pods to survive the ship's resource-depleted three-year journey across an intergalactic void. Well, all but one: Eli Wallace (David Blue) remains awake to fix the final malfunctioning pod, leaving his survival literally up in the air.

13. 'Twin Peaks' Kyle MacLachlan's Agent Cooper gets an evil doppelgänger in the final minutes of Twin Peaks.

Season 2 of David Lynch's ABC murder mysteryTwin Peaksmight have finally answered its famous mystery "Who killed Laura Palmer?" but it ended with even more questions, namely the cryptic "How's Annie?" That's what Kyle MacLachlan's Agent Cooper utters in the final moments of Season 2—or rather, the dark doppelgänger of Agent Cooper that emerges from the supernatural Black Lodge.

Equipped with an unconventional narrative, spooky surrealism and, yes, unresolved questions, "Episode 29" long frustrated fans with its unsettling ending. But thankfully, Lynch resumed the mystery 26 years later with Twin Peaks: The Return, which aired 18 episodes.

14. 'Hannibal' Hannibal had widespread critical acclaim but dismal viewership numbers, leading to its demise.

For three seasons and 39 episodes, NBC's psychological horror-thriller series Hannibal delved into the deliciously dark (and, yes, at times homoerotic) connection between FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and the forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).

So it was only fitting that the series finale would center on the dangerous entanglement of the two characters, but we didn't know just how literally creator Bryan Fuller and his team would take things. “The Wrath of the Lamb” finds the men banding together to kill fellow serial killer Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage) at Lecter's cliffside house. With both Graham and Lecter heavily wounded after the altercation, they embrace and reflect on the twisted nature of their relationship. In the episode's final moments, Will pulls Lecter with him over the cliff's edge and seemingly into the ocean below, their fates unknown.

15. 'Moesha' Moesha shockingly ended with a positive pregnancy test, though viewers will never know to whom the test belonged.

Even traditional network sitcoms can end on a cliffhanger—and Moeshais proof. The UPN coming-of-age comedy starred R&B legend Brandy as a Black American teen living with her upper middle-class family (William Allen Young and Sheryl Lee Ralph played her father and stepmother). Ultimately, the series ended with unresolved storylines because the cast and crew had fully expected to return for a seventh season.

Instead, UPN abruptly canceled the show, with the Season 6 finale serving as the long-running comedy's final chapter. The episode's shocking moments included Myles (Marcus T. Paulk) getting kidnapped by a rival of Dorian's (Ray J)—the latter of whom was revealed to be Frank's son, not nephew—and the discovery of a positive pregnancy test in the trash can of Moesha's dorm room. But who does it belong to?! We'll never know.

16. 'The Last Man on Earth' Led by Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth ended on a major cliffhanger after its fourth season.

Created by and starring Will Forte, the post-apocalyptic FOX sitcomThe Last Man on Earth chronicles the adventures of Philip Tandy Miller, an average guy and the only human survivor of a deadly virus that has seemingly wiped out the entire human race. Across four seasons, we find out that Forte's character isn't as alone as he thinks, as he rounds up a small group of survivors played by Kristen Schaal, Mel Rodriguez, January Jones, Cleopatra Coleman and Mary Steenburgen.

By the show's end, the crew is happily setting up their new homestead in Tapachula, Mexico, only to encounter dozens of mysterious survivors who suddenly appear on their doorstep. Do these mask-wearing individuals come in peace? The show was canceled before we could find out.

17. 'iCarly' Miranda Cosgrove's Carly and Nathan Kress' Freddie nearly get hitched in the iCarly reboot's series finale.

Unlike most reboots, Paramount+'siCarly revival actually got to run for three seasons, bringing back the OGs of that 2000s Nickelodeon teen sitcom—including Miranda Cosgrove (as Carly Shay), Jerry Trainor (as Carly's brother Spencer) and Nathan Kress (as Freddie Benson, Carly's neighbor-turned-boyfriend), albeit in slightly more adult circumstances.

And Carly and Freddie certainly found themselves in more adult circumstances in what would become the reboot's series finale, after the streamer canceled the show in October 2023. In "iHave a Proposal," the couple decided to tie the knot at the forfeited nuptials of Marissa (Mary Scheer) and Lewbert (Jeremy Rowley), who had decided instead to run off to Las Vegas to elope. But before they could officially say "I do," they were interrupted by a surprise guest: Carly's estranged mother, who abandoned her and Spencer decades earlier.

18. 'ALF' The Season 4 ending of the 1980s sitcom ALF became an unintentional series finale after the comedy was canceled.

ALF's March 1990 episode "Consider Me Gone" unintentionally became the show's series finale. The iconic alien sitcom aired on NBC for four seasons before the network canceled the series due to alleged issues that included grueling production, technical problems and behind-the-scenes tension amongst the creative team.

Its cancellation was so unexpected that the episode even ended with a "To Be Continued..." title card. The cliffhanger saw ALF himself (voiced by Paul Fusco) captured by government agents of the Alien Task Force, who interrupted his planned reunion with his fellow Melmacians.

19. 'Pushing Daisies' This charming ABC comedy ran for two eventful seasons, during which it wrangled 17 Emmy nominations and seven wins.

Starring Lee Pace as Ned—a pie-maker with the ability to bring dead things back to life with his touch—the whimsical ABC dramedy Pushing Daisies drew a passionate cult following with its winning combination of romantic dark comedy and “forensic fairytale” vibes.

The Bryan Fuller-created series, which also starred Anna Friel, Kristin Chenoweth and Chi McBride, aired for two seasons but was abruptly canceled in June 2009, forcing the series finale “Kerplunk” to rush through several storylines, especially for its supporting characters (remember Olive's random mac-and-cheese restaurant?!), and leave other plot points incomplete. Thankfully, a long-awaited third season is currently in the works with the original cast returning, so fans will hopefully get to see those loose ends tied up.

20. 'The Sopranos' Many The Sopranos fans were in disbelief as Tony (James Gandolfini) and his family sat in a New Jersey diner while the show cut to black.

Did Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) live or die at the end of The Sopranos? It took creator David Chase 14 years to confirm the answer was death—but for years, fans were left to debate it themselves. After six seasons, the HBO classic closed out with its polarizing finale, "Made in America." The episode began with Tony, Carmela (Edie Falco) and A.J. (Robert Iler) waiting for Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) at Holsten's and ended with an abrupt mid-scene cut to black after a mysterious person entered the New Jersey diner and caused Tony to look up. Was it merely Meadow or was it someone with revenge on the brain?

Chase finally confirmed Tony's death in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, much to fans' chagrin: "I had no idea it would cause that much—I mean, I forget what was going on in Iraq or someplace; London had been bombed! Nobody was talking about that; they were talking about The Sopranos. It was kind of incredible to me. But I had no idea it would be that much of an uproar. And was it annoying? What was annoying was how many people wanted to see Tony killed. That bothered me."

Actor Dan Levy recently appeared on Conan O'Brien's podcast, Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend, wherein he remembered his late Schitt's Creek co-star and family friend, Catherine O'Hara.

During the April 2026 podcast episode, Dan referenced that O'Hara, who died in January 2026 at the age of 71, was his father, Eugene Levy's longtime comedy partner. The pair played husband-and-wife, Moira and Johnny Rose, on Schitt's Creek, which had a six-season run until 2020. Dan, who co-created Schitt's Creek with his father, said that O'Hara's death is something he "still can't quite fit into [his] head" and is "an unimaginable loss."

O'Brien, who offered his condolences to Dan, shared that he got the chance to sit next to O'Hara at the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special, held in February 2025.

"I had the time of my life with her," said O'Brien.

O'Brien said that he and O'Hara were chatting and making jokes "in between sketches" throughout the show. He said, however, that she didn't love a joke he made about Paul McCartney before he performed for SNL50.

"At the end of the show, Paul McCartney comes out. It's like a surprise, but he comes out to sing like the end of Abbey Road. And I just next to Catherine went, 'Ugh' and she said, 'What?' And I said, 'This guy's never good.' And Catherine like punched me. She was like, 'Oh, shut up.' You know, I'm like, I know her, but I didn't know her well enough to get punched by her. But yes, I did," said O'Brien during the podcast episode.

Dan quipped that O'Hara, given her comedy expertise, "knew when something was not funny."

"Hence your Paul McCartney joke. She knew when to bring it back to reality," said Dan with a laugh.

A laughing O'Brien then explained that he "wanted to be the one person who ever said that when Paul McCartney came out."

"I thought no one's ever done it. I'm going to do it," continued O'Brien.

When Dan said, "I'm sure that was the reaction you were looking for," O'Brien replied, "I wanted to get punched by Catherine O'Hara and my dream came true."

Dan, who played Moira and Johnny's son, David, shared a tribute to his on-screen mother in a January 30 Instagram post.

In the caption of the post, Dan noted that he and O'Hara had a close bond because of her friendship with his father.

"What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years. Having spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. Fifty years ago tonight, a 26-year-old Bruce Springsteenclimbed the wall at Graceland to try to meet Elvis Presley. Elvis was not home. Security walked Springsteen back out.

Springsteen was on the road for his Born to Run tour on April 29, 1976, and had just played a Memphis show. The previous October, he had landed on the cover of Time and Newsweekthe same week. He was 26 and on a roll.

After the show, Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt got in a cab. They wanted an all-night diner. The cab passed Graceland. Springsteen saw a light on in an upstairs window, decided Elvis was awake, and asked the driver to stop.

He climbed the wall and ran up the hill toward the mansion. A security guard intercepted him at the front door before he got inside. Springsteen tried to talk his way in.

"Can you tell him Bruce Springsteen was here," he told the guard, per his own retelling. He added that Elvis "may not know who that is" and pointed out he had just landed on the cover of Time and Newsweek.

The guard said he would pass the message along. Then he walked Springsteen back to the gate.

Elvis Was 1,800 Miles Away

Springsteen did not know it that night, but Presley was not at Graceland. He was already in Lake Tahoe, preparing to open a sold-out 14-show run at the Sahara Tahoe the very next night. The light in the upstairs window meant nothing.

Presley would die at Graceland just over a year later, in August 1977. The two men never met.

Why the Story Stuck

Springsteen has told this version himself, on stage and in interviews and in his 2016 memoir Born to Run. It is one of his most-repeated anecdotes, mostly because it is funny. The Boss scaled a wall to meet a guy who was 1,800 miles away gearing up for opening night.

Springsteen had gotten big enough to think Elvis might know who he was. He still hedged it with the guard.

Springsteen, now 76, is on the road again. He plays the United Center in Chicago tonight on his Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour, exactly 50 years after the Graceland wall. Graceland is open seven days a week. More than 600,000 people walk through it every year. None of them have to climb the wall.

A powerful war drama from 1989 is finding new life in 2026. Glory, a film about courage during the American Civil War, is now ranked No. 21 on Netflix’s “100 Best Movies Right Now” list for April. 

The sudden rise is surprising to many, but it shows how the movie still connects with viewers decades after its release. The film holds a strong 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 

Critics praise its moving story, detailed visuals and standout acting, especially Denzel Washington’s Oscar-winning role. Even after 37 years, Glory is being called one of the best war films ever made.

Glory tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first Black regiments in the Union Army during the Civil War. The movie follows Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick, as he leads the group of soldiers. Among them are Trip, an escaped slave played by Denzel Washington, and John Rawlins, a wise gravedigger played by Morgan Freeman.

The film shows how these men trained, faced unfair treatment and fought hard to prove their worth. At first, they were given simple labor jobs instead of real combat roles. But they pushed for a chance to fight on the battlefield.

One of the most powerful parts of the story is when the soldiers learn they are being paid less than white troops. Trip speaks up, and the men refuse their pay in protest. Colonel Shaw supports them, even tearing up his own paycheck. This moment helps unite the group and build trust.

The story leads to the Battle of Fort Wagner, where the 54th bravely charges into a deadly fight. Many soldiers are lost, including Shaw and Trip. But their courage changes how people see Black soldiers. After the battle, more Black men are allowed to join the Union Army.

Film critic Roger Ebert once wrote, “Glory is a strong and valuable film no matter whose eyes it is seen through.” 

When Glory first came out, it earned praise and awards. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington. The film also received honors from major groups like the NAACP Image Awards and the Golden Globes.

In 2025, the movie was added to the United States National Film Registry. This means it is seen as “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” This recognition helped bring the film back into the spotlight.

The movie’s message about equality, bravery and sacrifice feels just as important today. It shows how people can stand up against unfair treatment and make a difference.

The film was directed by Edward Zwick and written by Kevin Jarre. Jarre got the idea after seeing a Civil War memorial and noticing that some of the soldiers were Black. That moment inspired him to tell a story many people had not heard before.

Even with some criticism about its storytelling perspective, Glory remains widely respected. It continues to teach viewers about an important part of history while delivering an emotional and powerful story.

Today, its return to the charts shows that great films never truly fade away.

When "Best of My Love" by the Eagles hit No. 1 in 1975, it marked a defining moment for the band and for the rock genre as a whole.

More than five decades later, the popular song continues to resonate far beyond its original release, earning recognition as one of the greatest soft rock songs of all time, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. The track helped solidify The Eagles as one of the most influential acts of the 1970s, and the track still remains a staple today.

It was written by Eagles members Don Henley, Glenn Frey and JD Souther, and included on their 1974 album, On the Border. Released as the third single for their third record, it became the band's first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single in March the next year. In addition, the song charted the publication's Adult Contemporary Chart (called the Easy Listening Chart at the time) and was ranked the No. 12 song for 1975.

"The Best of My Love" describes the feeling of a slow and painful end of a relationship, and was inspired by Henley's breakup with then-girlfriend Suzanna Martin, highlighting how touring and communication issues can lead to the end.

In a conversation with director Cameron Crowe, Henley shared that "The Best of My Love" and a lot of On the Border were written at Dan Tana's, an Italian restaurant in the West Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

"A lot of the lyrics were actually written in Dan Tana's at a booth we liked to sit on, on the front side of the bar area," Henley explained. "That was the period when there were all these great-looking girls who didn’t really want to have anything to do with us. We were just scruffy new kids who had no calling card. We could be cocky at times — which was really just a front — but we weren’t very sophisticated or confident. We were typical, frustrated, young men."

Henley also explained that "The Best of My Love" was a "real turning point for the group." According to American Songwriter, recording On The Border was very difficult for the band, but the success of this song made it worth it.

“We had more or less given up hope for the success of the On the Border album, and we’d begun work on the next album,” Henley said. “So when ‘The Best of My Love’ took off, it was like a resurrection, a miracle. Totally unexpected.”

The Eagles formed in 1971 in Los Angeles and became one of the most successful music acts of the 1970s. Not only are they one of the world's best-selling music artists, but they also have four other No. 1 singles, six No. 1 albums, six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards. In addition, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and ranked No. 75 on Rolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" in 2010.

Since their formation 55 years ago, they have released seven studio albums, with their most recent being Long Road Out of Eden in 2007. Many of their records have been combined into compilations or remastered over the years.

Currently, the Eagles are prepping for their upcoming The Long Goodbye: Act III Tour, which kicks off at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival this Saturday and ends on May 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
