Few bands of this Earth can completely top the charts with their debut record. Most bands have to grind away for years to achieve the heights of stardom available to a person. It seems that the artwork of their smash hit debut record was a statement of truth, because it would take an alien to achieve the out of this world success Boston would with their first release.

Fifty years ago on this day, Boston’s self titled debut unleashed the power pop sound onto the ’70s music landscape with a record that would go platinum seventeen times over. It’s an endlessly lauded and revered release of the time that has defined the classic rock genre. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame placed the album in the 43rd spot on their “Definitive 200” list of albums, marking it as one of the most respected releases of all time. There’s two kinds of people in this world: kids who heard this song for the first time in the car, and the fathers who played it for them. To me, this song sounds like windows down, long desert highways, and wind blowing your hair all the way back. There’s a glare in your sunglasses, and not a single care in the world. It’s an infectious energy that makes me endlessly nostalgic for a time I didn’t live in.

Boston’s debut album is a true flash in the pan moment. A testament to what can happen when the right band with the right sound comes out at exactly the right time. They changed the landscape of popular rock music going forward, and gave tons of ’70s kids an unforgettable summer with a pop rock classic.

Connections Sports Edition is just like the regular Connections word puzzle, in that it’s a game that resets at 12 a.m. EST each day and has 16 different words listed. It’s up to you to figure out each group of four words that belong to a certain category, with four categories in total.

This new version is sports-specific, however, as a partnership between The New York Times and The Athletic.

As the NYT site instructs, for Connections Sports Edition, you “group sports terms that share a common thread.”

There are many of us who grew up feeling like our emotions were “too much,” or that we were simply “too sensitive.” Maybe you were called “dramatic” when you tried sharing your perspective. Maybe you were told to “toughen up” while crying about an injury or insecurity. Whatever the case, you are likely familiar with the experience of feeling as if your emotions, concerns or viewpoints were easily dismissed.

Dr. Sasha Hamdani (known online as @thepsychdoctormd with one million followers on Instagram), a renowned board-certified psychiatrist and one of the country’s leading mental health experts, understands this experience well. So well, in fact, that she wrote her newest book on the topic: Too Sensitive: Rejection, Resilience, and the Science of Feeling Deeply (out August 25).

The book cover also says: “Understanding RSD and turning emotional sensitivity into strength.” RSD stands for rejection sensitive dysphoria, which Cleveland Clinic defines as “when you experience severe emotional pain because of a failure or feeling rejected.”

Here, Dr. Hamdani weighs in on whether this type of rejection in a conversation says more about the person using a dismissive phrase, or the person they’re about. She also tells Parade why some people are quick to disregard someone’s feelings rather than validating them in their responses, and how to best communicate with condescending individuals.

When someone uses a dismissive phrase like “toughen up” or “you’re too sensitive,” does it say more about the person speaking, or the person being talked about?

Dr. Hamdani explains, “I’m not sure because each scenario has a unique context, but I do think that sometimes when someone says ‘toughen up,’ they may be uncomfortable with emotion, unsure how to respond or trying to shut down a feeling they do not know how to hold.”

On the other hand, “That does not mean the sensitive person is reacting perfectly or that every feeling needs to dictate the outcome,” she adds.

However, either way, these comments are not helpful.

“But dismissive phrases usually do not help anyone regulate; they just add shame on top of pain (and I know anyone who has heard those phrases repeatedly agrees with that!),” she tells Parade.

Flatiron Books

When someone is dismissing your feelings, it can be hard to know exactly how to respond. So, how does a psychiatrist suggest shutting down this type of rejection?

First things first, Dr. Hamdani stresses, “I would be careful with the idea of ‘shutting someone down,’ because the goal is not to win the interaction. The goal is to protect your emotional reality without escalating the dynamic.”

That being said, she has a go-to response that she recommends.

“A phrase I often like is: ‘You do not have to agree with my feelings for them to be valid,'” she reveals. “It is direct, grounded and it reminds both people that emotional validation is not the same thing as admitting fault.”

Besides “You do not have to agree with my feelings for them to be valid,” Dr. Hamdani has other go-to responses she recommends.

“I think it helps to have a few phrases ready because when you are emotionally flooded, language can disappear,” she tells Parade, explaining that you might use one of the following responses:

• “I am not asking you to fix this, I am asking you to hear me.”
• “When you dismiss this, it makes it harder for me to feel safe in this conversation.”
• “I can take accountability for my reaction, but I still need you to acknowledge the impact.”

“The key is to stay anchored in your experience without over-explaining or begging someone to care,” she shares.

• Sasha Hamdani, MD (known online as @thepsychdoctormd), is a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in ADHD, RSD and emotional regulation, and the author of Too Sensitive: Rejection, Resilience, and the Science of Feeling Deeply

When we think of the Civil Rights Movement and famous writers at the time, one of the most well-known names that comes to mind is James Baldwin’s. He was a Civil Rights activist on top of being an American writer who received acclaim for his many essays, novels, poems, plays and more. 

As Britannica reported, Baldwin was “one of the most important voices of the 20th century” thanks to his in-depth, fantastic writing and his passion regarding the topic of race in America. He was also one of the first Black writers to incorporate queer themes in his work, which was “highly controversial at the time” due to how “frank” he was about it. And in our quote of the day, Baldwin touches on how confronting life’s challenges is vital to progress, which can be taken personally or applied to the wider landscape, as he did. 

His most well-known works include his books Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953) and Another Country (1962), his plays such as The Amen Corner (1954) and essays such as Nobody Knows My Name (1961) and The Fire Next Time (1963). 

According to the National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC), Baldwin was born in 1924 in Harlem, NY, and died in 1987 in France; he was most active in his writing and work from 1947 to 1985. He faced poverty and a “complex relationship with his religious upbringing” growing up (his stepfather was a strict Baptist preacher). 

He spent a lot of his time abroad, though he came back for extended periods of time to the U.S. to see his family and partake in the Civil Rights Movement. As NPR reported, Baldwin wrote, “I love America more than any other country in this world and exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually,” in 1955. And that mentality really is what propelled a lot of his actions and bolsters his opinion in today’s quote.

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

This quote appears in Baldwin’s book, The Cross of Redemption: Uncollected Writings. It came out in 2010, decades after his death, but as its subtitle says, it’s a collection of essays, articles, reviews, interviews and more that hadn’t been put in book form up until that point (though some had been published elsewhere). As the book description reads, it is deemed a “welcome and important addition to the works of a cosmopolitan and canonical American writer who still has much to teach us about race, democracy and personal and national identity.”

This line is at the very end of the chapter titled “As Much Truth as One Can Bear,” under the essays and speeches section of the collection. It was first published in The New York Times in 1962, and in it he writes about living in a post-World War society in the early ’60s and calls for American writers to look at that world with critical eyes, per the Justice Innovation Lab. 

He writes this famous line in the last paragraph of this essay, but right before it he talks about how he is a part of “the generation that must throw everything into the endeavor to remake American into what we say we want it to be,” and that if they don’t do that, “we will perish.” Baldwin makes the case that American writers have a responsibility to confront the world that they live in. He then finishes the essay with: 

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. The principal fact that we must now face, and that a handful of writers are trying to dramatize, is that the time has now come for us to turn our backs forever on the big two-hearted river.”

The last part of his larger quote is referring to Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “Big Two-Hearted River,” which was about a man “emotionally wounded and disillusioned by World War I.” Most likely, Baldwin was urging writers to move beyond war stories or those about the past, and instead look toward the future and invent new literary devices (this was one of the earliest pieces of Hemingway’s to use his iceberg theory).   

Overall, in terms of what Baldwin is saying in this essay, as Distinguished University Professor Keith Clark said on the George Mason University podcast, Access to Excellence, Baldwin understands the desire to be nostalgic. And while it’s important to look back, it’s more important to use that retrospective to move forward. Clark said that Baldwin wanted American writers to “[look] at that history as a way to move into a future that is more about connectivity and connection and mutual progress…”

The quote on its own is saying something similar, which is why it’s so inspiring and so popular. While we cannot change every fate, issue or thing we set out to deal with, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. Because if you can fix things or redirect your path in life, you can only do so if you deal with or “face” them head-on. 

Kind of like the adage, “If you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always be where you’ve always been,” Baldwin is saying that you’re going to be stagnant and stuck in whatever cycle you’re in unless you confront it.

Fifteen years ago, Steve Jobs announced that he was stepping down as CEO of Apple, ending a major chapter in the career of the company’s most recognizable leader.

On Aug. 24, 2011, Jobs submitted a resignation letter to Apple’s board of directors and the Apple community after years of serious health problems and several medical leaves of absence. He was 56.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” Jobs wrote that time, per ABC News. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Jobs also made clear who he believed should lead Apple next.

“As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.”

Apple followed that plan the same day. Cook was named Apple CEO, while Jobs became chairman of the board. Cook was also added to the company’s board.

Jobs’ resignation came after a long period of health concerns. He had battled a rare form of pancreatic cancer, undergone a liver transplant in 2009 and taken several leaves of absence from Apple.

Apple did not provide additional details about Jobs’ health when his resignation was announced. The company focused instead on the leadership transition and its succession plan.

Jobs’ association with Apple goes back decades prior to his resignation. He founded the company in 1976 together with Steve Wozniak and it started out by developing and selling personal computers, such as the Apple I and the successful Apple II.

Jobs later helped lead the development of the Macintosh, which became one of Apple’s most important early products.

His career with Apple was not without setbacks. In 1985, Jobs left the company after a power struggle with Apple’s board and then-CEO John Sculley.

After leaving, Jobs founded NeXT and purchased the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, which later became Pixar. Pixar went on to produce Toy Story and became a major animation studio.

Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 after the company acquired NeXT. At the time, Apple was struggling. Under Jobs’ leadership, the company rebuilt its product lineup and introduced a series of products and services that became part of everyday life for millions of people.

Those included the iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, App Store and iPad.

Jobs was also behind Apple’s push into new software and online services. In June 2011, just months before his resignation, he appeared at a software developers’ conference in San Francisco to introduce the Lion operating system and iCloud.

Meanwhile, Cook’s appointment as CEO on Aug. 24, 2011, marked the beginning of Apple’s next chapter.

Cook is set to leave the CEO position on Sept. 1, with hardware chief John Ternus expected to take over, according to Cook’s letter.

Apple had previously announced that Cook would move into the executive chairman role, while Ternus would lead the company’s day-to-day product and operations work.

Jobs died on Oct. 5, 2011, at age 56. However, the products and businesses he helped create continue to shape Apple and the technology industry.

Find theme words to fill the board.

• The spangram describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.

Need a hint?

• Find non-theme words to get hints.

Shudder to Think, the influential ’90s rock band, delivered a major surprise to fans with their long-awaited return to music.

Following the announcement of their upcoming tour, the band, composed of Craig Wedren, Nathan Larson, Adam Wade, Clint Walsh and Jherek Bischoff, has shared news of their upcoming EP.

Marking the band’s first new EP in nearly 30 years, Shudder to Think is set to release the three-song mini-album, Who Sent You? on Sept. 11 under Dischord Records.

The exciting news will give their longtime listeners a rare chance to hear new music from one of the era’s most distinctive rock bands.

The soon-to-be-released EP reflects on Wedren’s teenage years in Cleveland in the 1980s, when he described himself as “young, horny, bored.”

It also served as a way for him to express his gratitude to the people he met along the way and the experiences that shaped his life.

“It’s both a collage of memories, refracted through the prism of time, and a message back to my younger self,” the frontman shared, as cited by Consequence. “Above all, it’s a nocturnal THANK YOU to all of the girls, family, friends, music, and invisible hands that lit the path, angels and devils both. Who, indeed, sent you?”

Before releasing Who Sent You?, the last EP they released was the self-titled promo EP in 1994 featuring five songs.

As for a full-length studio album, the last they had was the 1997 record 50,000 B.C.

On the other hand, this year will be a jam-packed one for Shudder to Think as the band will also go on tour for a four-date limited run in September.

Last year, the band marked a special milestone after embarking on their first tour in 17 years by staging a series of headlining shows and an appearance at Riot Fest 2025 in Chicago.

When asked about their comeback tour, Wedren said he believed it was the right time for them to launch a reunion.

“I think a lot of it had to do with just sort of age and stage,” he told Vanyaland 617 Q&A. “We’re all alive, we all love each other, we’re all very creative on a daily basis. I’ve had pretty serious health issues over the years. Nathan [Larson, guitar] had some weird health stuff, and I think there was just a kind of, let’s call it, “wizened appreciation” for how rare and special what it is that we have and can do together. I think that that combined with the fact that everybody’s kids are, well, actually Clint [Walsh], who’s the new guitar player, he just had a baby a couple of weeks ago with the exception of Clint, everybody’s kids are like teenagers. Everybody’s pretty set.”

Now, the band is entering a new chapter with its first new music in nearly three decades.

The comedy program only holds a 54% average critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though its audience “Popcornmeter” is more promising at 82%.

In other Kaling news, the beloved Office scene-stealer made headlines last month when she was announced to be among the guest Sharks for Season 18 of Shark Tank. Kendra Scott and Rashaun Williams are stepping into expanded roles as permanent Sharks, meanwhile.

There are so many ways to improve your blood pressure through diet, including limiting salt intake to 2,300 milligrams daily (OK, ideally 1,500 milligrams). That common advice may leave you rather…salty, though. What can you eat for lower blood pressure? Dr. Lauri Wright, Ph.D., MS, RDN, a registered dietitian and associate professor with USF Health, says loading up on fruits is “one of the easiest and tastiest ways to support heart health.”

“I like to call [fruit] nature’s grab-and-go snack,” Dr. Wright says. “It’s portable, naturally low in sodium, packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants, and satisfies a sweet tooth without added sugars.”

That’s probably welcome news if you’re one of the nearly 120 million U.S. adults living with hypertension (almost half of the adult population). While all whole fruits can have a positive effect on your heart health, Dr. Wright says that those high in potassium are especially useful for blood pressure management.

“One of the biggest heart-health superstars in fruit is potassium,” she says. “Potassium helps counteract the effects of sodium by encouraging the kidneys to flush out excess sodium and by helping blood vessels relax. Both support healthy blood pressure.”

Julia Zumpano, RD, a Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian, says another bonus with fruit: You don’t have to put too much thought into portion sizes. However, she clarifies that some people may want to be mindful of their fruit intake, such as those living with obesity, pre-diabetes or diabetes.

“Fruit contains natural sugars, some more than others,” Zumpano says. “Fruit can cause blood sugar to rise too high if eaten alone or in large amounts.”

Ensuring you’re consuming whole fruits (rather than low-fiber, high-sugar juices) that aren’t canned or sweetened is one way to limit blood sugar spikes. She adds that eating smaller portions (about a half-cup or 4 ounces of fruit) is another. Otherwise? It’s OK to go ham with fruit, especially one that registered dietitians agree is the best one for lowering blood pressure.

Four registered dietitians agree that bananas are the best fruit for blood pressure management because they contain key nutrients for heart health, most notably potassium. Most people don’t get enough potassium, but a medium banana contains 422 milligrams. Increasing your potassium intake through bananas might lower blood pressure within about a month.

“For blood pressure management, bananas are helpful as they have a significant amount of potassium,” says Dr. Elizabeth Klingbeil, Ph.D., RDN, an assistant professor at the University of Texas-Austin and a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics. “Potassium has been associated with decreased blood pressure as part of a healthy diet. So, in the short term, an increase in banana consumption could decrease one’s blood pressure slightly.”

You can reduce blood pressure even more—and sustain these results over several months to years—if you add bananas to your regular diet long-term.

“Bananas can help relax the blood vessels because potassium and magnesium help ease the tension in blood vessel walls,” Zumpano says. “This wider vessel diameter allows blood to flow freely, relieving pressure on the cardiovascular system.”

She adds that the antioxidants in bananas, such as catechins, also help dilate blood vessels, reducing inflammation and preventing artery damage and plaque buildup that can contribute to long-term hypertension (and other heart health issues, like high cholesterol).

 Bananas may not seem like the juiciest fruit, but they are made up of 70% to 80% water. So, they can help you feel more hydrated immediately and improve blood pressure over time if you make a habit of eating one.

“Bananas support hydration and muscle function because potassium is an essential electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance and supports proper muscle function, including the heart muscle,” Dr. Wright says.

Johannah Katz, RD, a dietitian from Consumer Health Digest, says fiber in bananas can also help your heart health in the short and long term.

“Using fruit like bananas to replace salty snacks, sweets, or refined carbohydrates can help improve the overall quality of the diet, because blood pressure is influenced by the whole diet by the whole eating pattern, not just one food,” Katz says.

As great as bananas can be for your blood pressure, Zumpano notes that people with certain conditions, like kidney failure or disease, may be on a potassium-restricted diet. If you fit that bill, talk to your doctor or registered dietitian about whether it’s a good idea to incorporate bananas into your diet, plus other ways to lower blood pressure through food.

“There is no clear ‘banana recommendation’ for blood pressure management, but including one medium-sized banana as part of your daily diet may be beneficial for those trying to manage their blood pressure,” Klingbeil says.

Zumpano offers similar advice. Remember, a balanced diet is the best way to lower blood pressure—there are no superfoods.

“One a day will do, along with other food sources of potassium like watermelon, beets, broccoli, oranges, avocado, potatoes, leafy greens and beans,” she says.

Registered dietitians say that bananas are a great fruit for lowering blood pressure. They’re sweet and filling, so you may enjoy one on its own, but RDs offered some other simple ideas.

• Bananas with oats/oatmeal. This breakfast-friendly food is one of Klingbeil’s favorite ways to go bananas. “By adding the banana to your oats, you get not only the benefits of the banana, but also the heart-healthy components of fiber in the oats themselves,” Klingbeil raves.
• Banana nicecream. Zumpano loves mashing bananas and freezing them to make “nice cream,” a delicious ice cream alternative. “If I am craving a frozen treat in the warmer months, this is a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth without added sugar,” she notes. “You can top with chopped nuts and/or shaved dark chocolate.”
• Bananas with Greek yogurt and sliced almonds. Katz is a fan of the crunch, potassium, healthy fats and protein this dish contains. “It makes it more balanced and satisfying than eating the banana alone,” Katz shares.

Bananas aren’t the only fruit that helps lower blood pressure, and RDs stress that getting a variety of foods in your diet is critical to support your overall health. Here are a few of Klingbeil’s favorite fruits that can lower blood pressure (besides potassium-rich bananas).

• Berries. Klingbeil says that berries have anthocyanins and other polyphenols that can improve blood vessel function and reduce oxidative stress. Plus, they’re high in fiber—all wins for your heart.
• Kiwi. Klingbeil calls kiwi an “underappreciated powerhouse.” “It’s packed with vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants, and regular kiwi consumption may support healthy blood pressure,” Klingbeil says.
• Oranges. Citrus isn’t just for boosting immunity! “Oranges provide potassium and vitamin C, which help support healthy blood vessel function,” Klingbeil reports. “They’re refreshing, portable and easy to incorporate into meals or snacks.”

Taylor Swift has the highest-grossing concert tour in history, and it is not close.

Adjusted for inflation, her 2023 Eras Tour finished $631 million ahead of the tour in second place, according to a new ranking from Visual Capitalist. The stranger thing sits further down the list. Every one of the top 20 happened this century. Not one of them started in the 1900s.

That would be the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang, at No. 7. Everything above it is newer. The figures are adjusted for inflation to July 2026, so this is not a case of old money being undercounted. Touring simply did not pay like this until record sales fell away.

Swift’s Eras Tour leads at $2.2 billion across its 149 dates, the only tour ever to clear $2 billion. Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres follows at $1.6 billion and stands as the most attended tour in history. U2’s 360° Tour takes third at $1.1 billion. Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road and Ed Sheeran’s Divide Tour round out the club at roughly $1 billion apiece. All five started in 2009 or later.

Swift played across Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas before finishing in Vancouver in December 2024. The tour reportedly added around $4 billion to the US economy. Economists predicted a boost of roughly 0.2 percent to Singapore’s GDP. Paris reportedly saw a bigger economic impact from her shows than from the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Guns N’ Roses’ Not in This Lifetime sits at No. 8 with $758 million. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band land just behind at $754 million for their 2023 to 2025 run. Harry Styles’ Love On Tour is No. 13, Roger Waters’ The Wall Live is No. 15 and Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour is No. 16 at $629 million.

Four acts appear twice. Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, the Rolling Stones and Metallica each placed two tours in the top 20. Rammstein, at No. 18, is the only act on the list that isn’t from an English-speaking country. Metallica took the last two spots outright, at Nos. 19 and 20.

There’s no question that the ’60s produced some of the most unique bands in rock history, and the 13th Floor Elevators were definitely among the most distinctive of the era. For one thing, the pioneering psychedelic rockers manage to get a song featuring an electric jug on the Billboard Hot 100. For another, that song — called “You’re Gonna Miss Me” — was written by singer-songwriter Roky Erickson when he was just 15 years old.

Erickson got his start in music early, according to the Southwest Review, beginning piano lessons when he was just four years old at his mother’s suggestion.

“My mom always encouraged everybody to sing,” the late Erickson explained in his last interview. “She’d say, ‘If you’re not going to do anything constructive around the house, the least you could do is sing! Sing a happy song.’”

Growing up in Austin, Texas, Erickson was a big fan of musicians like Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and James Brown. The influence of those idols can certainly be heard on “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” which Erickson first recorded with his local group the Spades. Like many teenage rock bands, the Spades didn’t last for very long, and Erickson went on to form the 13th Floor Elevators with University of Texas psychology student Tommy Hall in 1965.

As drummer John Ike Walton recalled years later, the 13th Floor Elevators came together as a group fairly quickly.

“We went to Tommy’s house. Tommy got Roky over and we were jamming. Next thing, we’re playing at the Jade Room,” he told The Austin Chronicle.

Showcasing Erickson’s one-of-a-kind voice (often described as a primal scream or howl) and Hall’s trademark whoop-whooping jug, “You’re Gonna Miss Me” was the opening track on the band’s 1966 debut album, The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators.

While “You’re Gonna Miss Me” was only a modest hit commercially, peaking at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100, it’s still considered to be one of the most influential songs of the era, credited with helping to shape the sound of psychedelic and garage rock. Nearly 50 years later, in 2014, Paste ranked “You’re Gonna Miss Me” at #2 on a list of the “50 Best Garage Rock Songs of All Time,” with music journalist Eric R. Danton calling it a “significant milestone” and the 13th Floor Elevators’ “defining statement.”

While the 13th Floor Elevators never had another song on the charts, they did release a few more albums (despite such complications as run-ins with the law, substance issues and Erickson’s severe mental health struggles). As for Erickson, though his condition would continue to deteriorate over the years, he didn’t let that stop him from making music.

“He was the most electric performer I’ve ever seen, and that includes Hendrix,” former Warner Bros. executive Bill Bentley said of Erickson. “He was possessed, so vivid and mesmerizing. His voice was so sharp and cutting — sometimes he’d get lost in his screams.”

In 2005, Keven McAlester‘s documentary You’re Gonna Miss Me explored Erickson’s music and life (including his schizophrenia diagnosis and onstage comeback). Erickson died in 2019 at the age of 71.

The Doors had just been fired.

Management at the Whisky a Go Go cut them loose on Aug. 21, 1966, over the way Jim Morrison was performing “The End,” and three days later the band walked into Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood and started making their first album anyway. That was 60 years ago today. Eight days after that, the whole thing was finished.

The sessions ran Aug. 24 through 31. Paul Rothchild produced and Bruce Botnick engineered. The whole record went onto four tracks of tape, one of them held back for overdubs, and almost everything you hear was played live in the room together. Rothchild later said they stopped a take not when it was perfect but when it had “the muse in it.”

Not one. Ray Manzarek played the bass lines with his left hand on a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, a 32-note keyboard stacked on top of his Vox Continental organ, and worked the organ with his right. On five tracks they quietly brought in Larry Knechtel on bass guitar, uncredited, among them “Soul Kitchen,” “Back Door Man” and “Twentieth Century Fox.”

Morrison had started “The End” as a breakup song, then stretched it night after night onstage at the Whisky until it became the thing that ended the residency. It went on the album anyway. Last, and uncut.

The album arrived Jan. 4, 1967, 11 tracks on Elektra. “Break On Through (To the Other Side)” had gone out three days ahead of it as the first single, and it stalled at No. 126. The one that actually broke them was “Light My Fire,” out that April, written mostly by guitarist Robby Krieger but credited to all four of them.

Collider named the record the greatest classic rock debut ever made earlier this year, with Led Zeppelin second and Black Sabbath third. By that September the band had gotten itself banned from The Ed Sullivan Show, and their second album landed a week after that.
