1962 ‘The Twilight Zone’ Episode Was Ranked as Having the Best Plot Twist in the Entire Series

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:57am

TV Line recently compiled a list of the “10 Best The Twilight Zone Plot Twists.” Coming in at number one was the season 3, episode 24 masterpiece, “To Serve Man.” This episode revolved around aliens named Kanamits who came to earth and promised to help humanity. (Spoilers ahead!)

Throughout the episode, the Kanamits shared their technology and tried to solve world hunger with the help of a book they had, titled To Serve Man. Since they were so kind, they ended up lowering everyone’s guard. However, it was ultimately revealed that the book was a play on words. It was not a guidebook to help the humans. It was a cookbook to eat the humans. The Kanamits were only helping humanity in order to make them as healthy as possible before consuming them.

One reviewer of this classic episode said, “Besides being The Twilight Zone at its best, Rod Serling produces an entire 1950's sci fi movie in only 25 minutes. A complete detailed story/mystery is presented in a complex episode that keeps moving along. I don't know of another episode that is this complex and delivers quite a punch.”

Some other iconic episodes that made the list of “Best Plot Twists” were “Eye of the Beholder,” which was about a woman whose face is hidden behind bandages, and “Time Enough at Last,” which is about a bookworm who ends up stranded after a nuclear apocalypse.

The Twilight Zone, which was created and hosted by Rod Serling, was an anthology television series that ran from 1959 until 1964. Throughout its run, which consisted of 156 episodes, it won several Emmy Awards and Hugo Awards. In 2013, TV Guide ranked it No. 5 in their list of greatest shows of all time. It also inspired the popular Disney attraction, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, which originally opened in 1994.

A reboot of The Twilight Zone was released in 2019 by Simon Kinberg, Jordan Peele, and Marco Ramirez. Like the original, it featured stories of science fiction, mystery, and horror.

Ellen DeGeneres Just Announced a New ‘Finding Nemo’ Short, and Parents Are Feeling Nostalgic

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:55am

Disney’s Finding Nemo hit the big screen 23 years ago. And now it looks like a new addition to the popular Pixar flick is in the works. Ellen DeGeneresrecently announced that she’s returning to the Nemo-verse to reprise the role of Dory. So if you watched the iconic animated flick on repeat with your kiddo two decades ago, get ready to feel nostalgic.

Deadlinefirst broke the news, reporting that Pixar plans to produce an as-yet-unnamed Finding Nemo short. While there’s no information on the plot or release date, DeGeneres did appear to confirm the project. The comedian posted a screenshot of Deadline’s article on her Instagram page over the weekend, captioning the pic, “Excited about this.”

View this post on Instagram

Even though we don’t know much about the mini movie, fans of the franchise are already excited about the upcoming addition. One commenter wrote, on Ellen’s post, “This is everything…Dory is back!” and another gushed, “This is incredible news.”

While most of the comments applauded the new project and praised Ellen’s involvement, some had a more cynical take. Following allegations of a toxic workplace in 2020, the former TV host ended her self-titled talk show in 2022. In 2024, DeGeneres addressed the scandal in her Netflix comedy special, For Your Approval, writing on Instagram, “Here we go! To answer the questions everyone is asking me—Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special.” She also humorously added a cute quip about her wife, “Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life.”

During the 2024 Netflix special, Ellen wove the controversy into her standup script, saying, “A few years ago, I started ending my show by saying, ‘Be kind to one another.’ Here’s the downside: I can never do anything unkind, ever, now.” She also said, “Yeah, you all heard I was mean. Everybody heard that I was mean. Everywhere I go, I know everyone’s heard that I’m mean. I know when I walk into a restaurant, people are watching, waiting to see if I’ll be mean.”

Based on her recent post’s comments, some former fans haven’t forgotten this scandal. One mused, “Disney’s still working with Ellen? Weird,” while another wrote a simple, “No thank you.”

This project is the first acting role DeGeneres has taken on since she voiced Dory in the 2021 miniseries Pixar Popcorn. The 68-year-old celeb (and her wife, Portia de Rossi) left Hollywood in 2024, moving to the rural Cotswolds in England. As of now, Disney has yet to provide additional information on the new production or DeGeneres’ involvement.

13 Dairy Queen Items You Forgot About

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:40am

When it comes to ice cream, it's hard to think of a more recognizable name than Dairy Queen. The beloved treat shop, first founded in the mid-1940s, has been the backdrop for many hot-fudge-covered childhood memories and continues to capture us even as adults. It occupies this unique space between being deeply rooted in the penny-candy, soda-shop nostalgia of the past and simultaneously feeling like a place that never goes out of style. Which isn't too hard because who doesn't love ice cream?

Regardless of whether you're a Blizzard fanatic who's tried almost every new concoction or you prefer simpler pleasures, like a tasty cherry-dipped cone, there's something for everyone at Dairy Queen. Of course, once you find your thing, there's nothing worse than taking a trip to the beloved home of the Dilly Bar only to find out that they've taken your go-to order off the menu completely. Waffle cones gone, Blizzard flavors eliminated, dreams crushed—it could very well be treated as a crime scene.

The sad truth is that while there are some constants (like the cutesy curl at the end of a cone), nothing lasts forever. Not even your favorite menu item. If you've ever wondered exactly how Dairy Queen determines which items get the proverbial axe, or want to experience some mouthwatering FOMO, we've rounded up 13 Dairy Queen items you forgot about and which ones might be making a comeback. Keep reading to find out more.

What Dairy Queen Menu Items Have Been Discontinued?

There is a reality where Dairy Queen never got rid of the Girl Scout Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties Blizzard, but sadly, we haven't quantum jumped to that timeline yet. Every now and then, DQ makes the difficult decision to discontinue a fan favorite for one reason or another, and regardless of the size of that specific treat's fandom, the pain left behind is just as enormous. Here are seven discontinued Dairy Queen menu items.

1. Waffle Cones

Ink N Propeller / Shutterstock.com

This might come as a surprise because it definitely was to me, but you won't find too many Dairy Queen locations making waffle cones anymore. While a few remain due to differences among franchisees, waffle cones have largely been phased out of the DQ zeitgeist. Despite their obvious popularity, freshly made waffle cones require significant additional labor and have a notoriously short shelf life, making them a costly, high-waste item. This led many franchise owners to remove them from the menu.

2. Sour Patch Kids Blizzard

While over 170 Blizzard flavors have been introduced since its creation, the Sour Patch Kids Blizzard was surprisingly among Dairy Queen's most popular flavors. Redberry flavored soft serve blended with Sour Patch Kids Bitz—a combo that shouldn't have worked, but it definitely did. It worked so well, in fact, that since it's very one-the-nose sour, sweet and gone release in July of 2019, fans have been petitioning for it to make a comeback. There's even an ongoing campaign on Change.org

3. DQ Fudge Bars

Not to be confused with the iconic Dilly Bar, Dairy Queen once stocked Fudge Bars, a low-calorie, sugar-free alternative to some of the brand's other sweets. Unfortunately, the healthier sweet option wasn't a bestseller for the brand, leading to its discontinuation in 2022.

4. Butterscotch Dipped Cone @dqshelbytwpmi

It’s back!!! Butterscotch cone dip 💛 #dq #dairyqueen #icecream #conedip

When it was announced that the Butterscotch Dipped Cone would be removed from menus, fans couldn't contain their disappointment. The fan-favorite flavor was a menu staple at Dairy Queen for decades before being relegated to seasonal status sometime in 2019. Today, you can find the flavor as a limited-time seasonal offering or grab a box of Butterscotch Dilly Bars instead.

5. Wet Walnuts

We promise not to go nuts with puns on this one, but yes, you're reading that correctly: Wet Walnuts were, in fact, a previous topping at Dairy Queen. Despite its name that would make even the most mature fifth grader crack up, wet walnuts were essentially a sticky-sweet topping made of walnuts or walnut pieces mixed with maple syrup. You could get them added to your sundae or blended into a milkshake, and although they weren't the most popular topping on the menu, they had one shell of a cult following. Sadly, due to rising ingredient costs and general lack of demand from fans, DQ removed the topping from menus sometime in 2022.

6. Chocolate Sprinkles

rafastockbr / Shutterstock.com

Personally speaking, the only sprinkles we acknowledge are rainbow, but no judgment if you prefer chocolate. At least not directly to your face. That being said, we can totally understand how it must've felt to find out that Dairy Queen had decided to phase out chocolate sprinkles for good in June 2022. The move was made in response to supply chain issues and was ultimately intended to promote menu consistency across the stores. Please accept our condolences.

7. Cherry Dipped Cones @theonly_iris

🍒 Cherry Dipped @Dairy Queen Ice Cream! 🍦 OMG guys! I’m OBSESSED!! We can't talk about Dairy Queen without mentioning the Cherry Dip. Although it's a newer flavor for the chain, the bright red candy shell is arguably one of the brand's most popular, and once you taste it, you'll understand why. It's the perfect complement to DQ's creamy, vanilla-laced soft serve, and it doesn't hurt that its bright red color looks stunning in photos. With that in mind, it makes sense that when Dairy Queen announced that the cherry dip would be phased out of stores in 2023, fans were ready to riot. Fortunately, the beloved flavor has returned since then as a limited-time seasonal offering rather than a permanent menu item.

What Were the Most Popular Dairy Queen Treats in the Past?

Over the course of its 85-year history, Dairy Queen has consistently delivered countless treats that practically cater to every kind of sweet tooth. From sundaes and malts to the iconic Blizzard, DQ is and always will be the place to go when you're looking for a little bit of a sugar rush. And if you've ever wondered what else is popular at Dairy Queen, we've rounded up 5 of the most popular treats from the past below. You might even be able to find some in a very special place.

1. Monkey Tails

Brent Hofacker / Shutterstock.com

Unless you grew up in the 1970s and '80s, you've likely never heard of Monkey Tails, a frozen banana on a stick dipped in chocolate. It was a simple treat that looked like, well, a monkey tail, and it was a staple on menus for about 20 years, dating back to the '60s. Although there has never been a concrete explanation for why this perfect summer treat was discontinued, some fans speculate that it was simply to make room on the menu for other items. Luckily, if you're still craving one, you can find them at the historic Moorehead, Minn., location, along with various other nostalgic sweets.

2. Mr. Maltie View this post on Instagram

This one might not ring any bells for the millennials out there, but at one point, Dairy Queen had a mascot named Mr. Maltie and a treat to go with it. It was essentially a frozen chocolate malt on a stick, first introduced in 1949. It was a staple on menus until the late 90s, when the brand all but stopped marketing the product. The trademark for the character was renewed in 2004, then canceled in 2016. Luckily, the Moorehead location still sells them if you'd like to try one for yourself.

3. DQ Bakes Apple Tart

DQ Bakes sound like some made-up mythic concoction, but at one point, they were one of Dairy Queen's most beloved menu items. The premise was that you could get a rich, decadent treat featuring something warm, topped with DQ's classic soft serve. While the Apple Tart was by and away the most popular flavor, fans could also choose between a Triple Chocolate Brownie or a Fudge-Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookie. The decadent treats were unfortunately discontinued in 2022, and there's no word on whether or not they'll return.

4. Oreo Brownie Earthquake Sundae @auburnhillsdq

Do you remember this? #dairyqueen #dqtok #dq #dqn #fyp #fypシ #foryou #icecream #CloroxMistChallenge #LinkBudsNeverOff #oreo #yes #xyabca #fouryou #sta

♬ Fantasy (feat. O.D.B.) (Bad Boy Fantasy) - Mariah Carey

As someone who loves anything to do with Oreos, this one is very near and dear to my heart. It had everything you could want in a sweet treat. Rich, creamy soft serve, chunks of fudgy brownies, hot fudge, marshmallow sauce, and a shower of Oreo crumbles—what's not to love? Unfortunately, the treat is no longer a permanent item on menus, although most of the ingredients are readily available for other treats, so you can still build one yourself. Simply ask for a sundae with all the extras.

5. DQ Jet

This one might not ring a bell for anyone who isn't Gen X, but from the late '50s through the '70s, Dairy Queen carried the DQ Jet, which was essentially a push pop like a creamsicle, available in vanilla, chocolate, and other rotating flavors. It was made as a nod to the ongoing space race at the time and sold for a meager 10 cents. You could also get a six-pack for 55 cents or get 11 for $1. Unfortunately, it was discontinued in the '70s, with no plans to return.

6. Old Fashioned Sodas

Although we've never thought of Dairy Queen as anything other than an ice cream parlor, its age should give you an idea of what the early days behind the counter might have looked like. Just when the beloved sweet shop first opened its doors, soda fountains were entering their golden age, and naturally, DQ had to jump on the bandwagon. Up until the late '90s, Dairy Queen sold its own Old Fashioned Sodas, which featured a variety of syrups, soft serve and carbonated water.

Why Does Dairy Queen Retire Menu Items?

Like most businesses, Dairy Queen occasionally retires menu items for a variety of reasons, including ingredient availability, declining sales, or a general refresh to offer customers something new. Also, from an operations perspective, it's a lot easier to manage a menu with set items and a few exciting features than one that looks like the booklet at The Cheesecake Factory.

That said, because Dairy Queen is a franchise, menu options can vary by location, so you might get lucky and stumble upon a waffle cone or Monkey Tail in the wild. Or you could take a road trip to the historic Moorehead, Minn., DQ, and check out a variety of vintage treats still on the menu.

Are Any Discontinued Dairy Queen Items Coming Back?

Thankfully, we've spent enough time talking about everything we're missing and are now looking ahead to which discontinued items we can expect to see back in stores—even if only for a limited time. While there's no word on whether Mr. Maltie is being reborn or if Dairy Queen will revamp the health-minded DQ Breeze, the brand has plenty in store for 2026, including a packed summer lineup of returning faves.

As far as blizzards go, you can grab a S'more's, Cotton Candy or Oreo Dirt Pie Blizzard, all returning just in time for the warmer weather. The chain is also bringing back the Brownie Batter Blizzard as well as the beloved Cherry Dip. And the fun doesn't stop there. Dairy Queen is also introducing a barrage of new flavors, including a Strawberry Angel Food Cake Blizzard, a Fruity Pebbles Shake, and a Cinnamon Toast Crunch Dipped Cone. Consider your summer treat calendar booked.

What Is Dairy Queen Best Known for Today?

It's pretty much impossible to mention Dairy Queen without simultaneously mentioning the iconic Blizzard. Since it was first introduced to the world in 1985, the Blizzard has become Dairy Queen's global calling card, often served with the signature flip upside down to showcase just how thick and luscious it is, even after it's been expertly blended with mix-ins. It's one of those things that tastes amazing at a molecular level, like it was always meant to exist.

To get even deeper, the real unsung hero of DQ is that expertly crafted soft serve that's the base of nearly everything on the menu. Beyond that, Dairy Queen is the perfect one-stop shop, no matter what kind of treat you're in the mood for. Now, if you'll excuse us, we just got the sudden urge to try every Blizzard on the menu.

'DWTS' Pro to Leave Tour Due to Injury: 'I'm Super Bummed'

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:18am

Dancing with the Starspro Brandon Armstrong will be leaving the show's tour earlier than expected.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the dancer shared in a video message that due to a broken elbow, he'll be heading home to seek further medical attention.

"No easy way to say this and obviously I'm super bummed but as you can tell, I'm hurt," Armstrong, whose arm was in a sling, said. "Long story short, I have a broken elbow. It could be a lot worse, it could obviously be a lot better, so I spoke with the doctor and I've been counseled from that doctor and the team on tour that I need to go home and look at it and try to figure it out, see what the next steps are so that I can get healthy again."

View this post on Instagram

Armstrong, who has been a pro on the ballroom dance competition show for 8 seasons, also spoke about how being on tour and meeting fans was so special to him as he thanked everyone for their support.

"I remember when I was first on the show I didn't get the opportunity to go on tour and I saw my friends going out and performing live but really getting to meet you guys every night and I wanted that so bad," he recalled. "So me not able to finish this tour, especially when we're so close, it's so hard for me to accept that, I'm going to miss that, I'm going to miss you guys and I think that's what's the hardest thing for me."

Looking on the bright side though, Armstrong said he's looking forward to getting better so he can be back to dancing for the DWTS fan convention happening later this summer.

"I cannot wait to come out see you guys at Con," he said. "I can't wait to come out there [and] dance for you guys."

And while Armstrong's post was flooded with well wishes from fans, fellow pros also took to the comments with support.

"I'm gonna miss you," Ezra Sosa wrote, while both Alan Bersten and Emma Slater wrote, "Love you, B."

"B, going to miss you so much! Love you!" added Britt Stewart.

1937 Classic Novel Ranked Among Best Quick Reads You Can Finish in a Single Sitting

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:15am

Goodreads users have put together a list of the "Best Quick Reads" that you can complete in a single sitting. Coming in third was the classic, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. The novella, which is around 100 pages in most standard paperback editions, was released in 1937. It tells the story of two ranch workers, George and Lennie, who are looking for work during the Great Depression.

Although the book has been banned frequently in schools, it is still one of the most well-known stories of all time. The title, Of Mice and Men, was inspired by a poem written by Robert Burns, called "To a Mouse." It famously says, “The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”

The novella, which can easily be completed in a single sitting, was adapted into a 1992 movie starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinise that has a 97% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story was also turned into a play, which premiered on Broadway in 1937. The most recent production in 2014 starred James Franco, Chris O'Dowd, Leighton Meester, and Jim Norton.

When speaking about the original novel, one reviewer said, “Breathtaking prose, touching characters and a heart-breaking ending. Who said only lengthy novel can make an impact?” Another said, “This is a classic that I feel everyone should read. And, I feel like Steinbeck is an author that everyone should read at least once. The writing is just too amazing to miss out on and it is so awesome how consistently amazing Steinbeck was.”

Steinbeck is one of the most successful novelists in American history. In addition to writing Of Mice and Men, he also wrote East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath. The latter sold more than 15 million copies. Steinbeck also received the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature and the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Also making the list of best quick reads you can finish in a single sitting were Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

1985 No.1 Ballad Ranked Among 'Top Movie Songs of All Time' Won an Oscar

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:14am

In 1985, Lionel Richietopped the charts with a hit single that was released as part of a musical drama film. The pop track would also end up winning two major awards in 1986, an Oscar for "Best Original Song" and a Grammy.

Directed by Taylor Hackard, White Nights starred Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines, Jerzy Skolimowski, Helen Mirren, and Isabella Rossellini, with it becoming her big screen debut as an actor. The main concept of the film focused on its use of dance and choreography by Twyla Tharp. While the film wasn't the biggest success among critics, it still succeeded at the box office, having made over $40 million.

White Nights follows Nikolai “Kolya” Rodchenko (Baryshnikov), a Soviet ballet dancer who defected to the United States. When his plane is forced to land in the USSR, he’s taken back into custody and pressured to perform again for the Soviet government. Assigned to keep an eye on him is Raymond Greenwood (Hines), an American tap dancer who had previously defected to the Soviet Union.

Despite being on opposite sides politically, the two form an uneasy bond as they navigate surveillance, loyalty, and their shared passion for dance. Koyla struggles with the idea of returning to a life he once escaped, with Raymond devising a plan to help Koyla regain his freedom.

White Nights had successful hits like "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin, but Richie's "Say You, Say Me" became the film's standout success. It was ranked by Billboard at No. 14 as one of the "Top Movie Songs" of all time. Richie was approached by the film's director to develop the track, and as Richie was unable to include "White Nights" in the title, he came up with "Say You, Say Me." Audiences hear the track during the film's closing credits, and it would end up winning an Oscar and a Grammy in the same category.

The song was created alongside James Anthony Carmichael, but it wasn't included in the film's soundtrack for a reason. In 1983, Richie was on a career high after releasing his album Can't Slow Down, and his record label didn't want his first single to be under a different company. Instead, they released "Say You, Say Me" as part of Richie's 1986 album Dancing on the Ceiling.

"Say You, Say Me" also topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts at No. 1 and on the Adult Contemporary charts. Critics called the ballad an "enduring love song" of the '80s, while also giving Dancing on a Ceiling mixed reviews. Its accompanying music video includes scenes from White Noise.

We Asked 3 Psychologists What Daily Habit Brings Families Closer Together—They All Said the Same Thing

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:10am

"Family is everything" is an excellent cross-stitch line, and you may see framed photos with the slogan at HomeGoods or Target. Family isn't everything, but psychologists agree it counts for a lot.

"A close-knit family is important because it acts like a safety net," says Dr. Emily Guarnotta, Psy.D, PMH-C, a psychologist and founder of Phoenix Health. "When life gets hard, knowing you have a team in your corner helps you navigate those tough times."

Dr. Guarnotta explains that people with close family ties naturally feel less isolated and alone, pointing to research that links loneliness to physical and mental health concerns. The research goes against the often individualistic, pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps messages our society pushes. Yet, that mindset is not in our DNA.

"As humans, we are wired for connection, especially within our primary relationships," says  Dr. Crystal Saidi, Psy.D, a licensed psychologist with Thriveworks. "A close-knit family relationship creates a sense of emotional safety and can directly impact confidence, mental health and behavior."

Importantly, some people may need to go low or no-contact with their biological families, such as if there is a history of abuse or substance misuse. If that's you, know that you do not have to live in loneliness.

"Although friends, church and social groups can never replace the family, for those who lack family ties, it’s important to develop these connections in order to receive some of the same benefits," saysDr. Karyne Wilner, Psy.D., a psychologist and the author of Releasing Toxic Anger for Women.

Whether you're trying to bond more with your chosen or biological family, daily rituals can go a long way toward that. If you do nothing else, three psychologists agree that this daily habit brings families closer together.

What Brings Family Members Closer Together?

PixelsEffect/Getty Images

Dr. Guarnotta is big on foundational moments and priorities that foster closeness between family members.

"What brings family members closer together isn’t anything groundbreaking," she says. "It’s small, consistent moments of connection. Families are closer when members feel seen and heard by one another. It’s about creating a safe space where everyone feels like they belong and that their voice matters."

That's not to say big moments don't have a way of bringing families together.

"Family members become closer when an event or situation brings them together so that each person can participate and have a role," Dr. Wilner explains. "Perhaps they are solving a problem, taking a family vacation, coping with a stressful event, helping a sick relative or responsible for designing a holiday ritual."

The #1 Daily Habit That Brings Families Closer Together, According to 3 Psychologists

Psychologists agree that daily screen-free time is a game-changing habit that brings families closer together.

"Time away from screens is important because it provides a space to connect," Dr. Guarnotta states. "When we’re on our screens, we might be together, but emotionally, we are alone. Screen-free time allows for eye contact and active listening. It says to each other, 'I value our relationship more than this device.'"

Of course, phones are such a regular part of our daily lives—from TikTok videos to work emails. Dr. Wilner concedes it can be hard to get everyone in the family to agree to implementing a rule of no screens for a certain period. Yet, it's worth working through the friction for all of the benefits, Dr. Guarnotta mentions.

"When each family member agrees that there is a need for screen-free time and screen-free hours are defined, the benefits to the family as a whole are amazing," Dr. Wilner says.

Dr. Saidi echoes these sentiments.

"When screens and devices are involved, one can be physically present but not emotionally," she notes.

OK, but what if you don't live with your family and can only communicate via Zoom or FaceTime? Psychologists say that it can work, too, with the right guardrails.

"Connection is about presence... so even virtual meetings can feel meaningful if done intentionally," Dr. Saidi says. "It is important to treat the FaceTime calls like a dedicated connection time, meaning not being distracted or on other devices."

How To Implement a Screen-Free Daily Habit With Your Family

Dr. Guarnotta suggests taking practical, well-paced steps to establish a screen-free daily habit that can bring your family closer together.

  • Pick a "no-screens zone." She says the dinner table or car ride to school make good candidates for this zone. "During this time, put all of your phones in a basket in another room so that you’re not tempted to check them," she shares.
  • Discuss the benefits. To get buy-in, speak with members of your family of all ages about the benefits of screen-free time. "Teens may be more open if they understand why you are implementing a guideline like this, rather than just feeling forced into it," she reports.
  • Start small. You're not going to go from "scrolling every night at the dinner table" to a device-free two-week vacation. "Start small, such as five to 10 minutes, and gradually increase it over time," she advises. "Even just a few minutes can help reset your connection and lower stress levels. From there, build up to longer activities, such as a screen-free outing."

7 Other Core Habits and Rituals To Keep Families Connected 1. Have a daily check-in

This habit can ensure you have a touch point with your family each day.

"You can use daily highs and lows as a check-in, as this is easy to implement and teaches kids that all emotions are welcome," Dr. Saidi explains. "This also normalizes talking about feelings."

Hint, hint: Make it screen-free.

2. Shared meals

Shared meals are another great habit to stack on top of a no-screen period. Dr. Saidi says shared meals protect family connection and communication.

"It is less about the actual meal or food and more about the ritual of coming together consistently," she explains. "Even if it is a few times a week, it can make an impact."

3. Volunteering and caretaking

Dr. Wilner shares that volunteering and caretaking reinforce values like compassion, giving and helpfulness. She suggests that the family decide together on where to volunteer.

"Perhaps you are good at the internet, and your grandfather is struggling to pay his bills on an online banking site," Dr. Wilner says. "Find an hour when you are both available so that you can tutor him. Or, a grandmother may ask to sit with her six-year-old grandson and sound out words with him to improve his reading skill."

Soup kitchens and community litter pick-ups are great ways to help others, too.

4. Bond in nature

Dr. Wilner says picnics, hikes or car rides through the countryside often become core memories families recall for years to come.

"This activity creates experiences which produce memories and group cohesiveness," Dr. Wilner points out. "Additionally, each family member may have an opportunity to suggest the next location to explore."

5. Make chores a team effort

Yes, chores can serve as a bonding experience rather than one riddled with strife and nagging.

"When it comes to things like laundry, dishes and yard work, make it a family affair," Dr. Guarnotta says. "These 'boring' activities can become more like team-building, as you’re working toward a common goal together, which in turn helps you feel closer."

6. Create a special language or inside jokes

This one can help you and your family feel like you really get one another on a different level.

"Having inside jokes or code works that only your family understands is a way to feel closer," Dr. Guarnotta shares. "It builds a sense of 'us against the world.'"

7. Have a family question game night

Dr. Wilner says this core habit can give families a "deeper insight into each other."

"You are sharing experiences that aren’t normally brought up during ordinary conversation," she explains.

To implement this habit, the psychologist suggests picking a theme for the evening, like "the time I was most afraid,” “the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me” or “when I really had to face a situation with courage.”

Final Takeaways

Becoming closer as a family is a worthwhile goal, and habits can help you get there. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • Family matters. Close family ties can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, both of which can have profound impacts on your physical and mental well-being.
  • Screen-free time fosters connection. Psychologists say screen-free time lets families give one another undivided attention. It opens the door for genuine emotional connection and communication.
  • Implement screen-free time practically. Psychologists recommend setting achievable boundaries around screens, like device-free times (dinner or the car ride to school, for instance). Start with small intervals—even five minutes can help—and work your way up to longer periods in analog mode together.
  • Proximity doesn't have to get in the way. If you don't live with family members, it's OK to have one screen, like a phone or computer, for FaceTime and Zoom. But psychologists say you'll want to make it a one-screen affair and close other tabs and pause notifications.
  • Other habits can also help with family closeness. Volunteering together, engaging in family check-ins and spending time in nature can all build closeness and core memories.

‘Superman’ Sequel, Branded a Disaster, Ranked Among 'Worst Action Movies of All Time'

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:00am

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is intended to be a triumphant return of the box-office sci-fi action series starring the iconic actor Christopher Reeve.

However, what was supposed to be a bold revival for Reeve’s final performance as Clark Kent and Superman was ultimately labeled as a major cinematic misfire, landing it among the worst action movies of all time.

Collider released a list of the top 10 films that sparked poor reception and viewer disappointment, with the DC movie landing at No. 5.

Based on the article, the cast ensemble was not the problem, especially since the movie was headlined by a legendary star, but the script was the real issue.

“It’s such a poorly written sequel, and looks noticeably cheap compared to the three Superman movies that came before,” as Collider stated.

Another factor that might contribute to the movie’s downfall was the lack of creativity, depth or real purpose, which the article described as an “empty shell of a sequel.”

Interestingly, the movie showed the same reaction from professional critics on Rotten Tomatoes, a recognized movie and TV show review aggregator website.

The fourth installment of the Superman Franchise starring Reeve holds a 16 percent score on the Tomatometer, which means only 16 percent of professional critics gave the film a positive review, while the remaining 84 percent rated it negatively.

The critics also cited the shallow storyline and the strangely routine special effects as the film’s key shortcomings.

One even mentioned that Superman IV was a “sloppy, low-budget” version of the original.

Directed by Sidney J. Furie, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace sees the return of Reeve as Clark Kent and Superman, who decides to end the nuclear arms race.

This was after receiving a heartfelt letter from an elementary student. In response, he used his powers to collect all the nuclear missiles on Earth and throw them into the Sun to destroy them.

Beyond Reeve’s on-screen appearance, he was deeply involved in the production and only agreed to reprise the role after being granted creative control of the story.

According to Warner Bros. Fandom, he wanted the storyline to include the global political issue of nuclear warfare to give the movie a more serious and different tone from the previous installment.

However, they were only given a limited budget, which led to significant creative and technical constraints.

Unfortunately, what could have been a grand sendoff for Reeve as Superman became a widely criticized final chapter that fell short of expectations.

1958 Rock Song Made Rare Chart History With Four Different Artists

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 10:00am

A rock song hitting the charts once is an achievement. Doing it multiple times is rare. Doing it four separate times, each with a different artist, is something else entirely.

That’s exactly what happened with “Summertime Blues,” a track that first arrived in 1958 and somehow refused to stay tied to a single moment, or a single voice. Instead, it became one of rock music’s most unusual success stories, reappearing on the charts again and again as new artists made it their own.

The song was originally recorded by Eddie Cochran, who co-wrote it with Jerry Capehart. Fitting considering the title, it came out in the summer of 1958, and it was a huge success for Cochran, both in the immediate aftermath and over the decades since it was released.

The track climbed to the eighth spot on the Billboard Hot 100, cementing its place as an early rock and roll staple, while it also reached the top 20 on other international charts, including in the U.K., Austria, and South Africa.

But this was really just the start of the song's success. Around a decade later, “Summertime Blues” found a second life when the band Blue Cheer recorded a louder version in 1968, bringing the classic track to a more hard rock audience.

Like the original, this version charted well too, reaching the 14th spot on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 3 in Canada, and going all the way to the top spot in the Netherlands.

Only a couple of years later, one of the most iconic rock bands released their own version. Within the interesting history of the song overall, The Who's version also had its own unusual journey. It first appeared on the Live at Leeds album in 1970, but they started performing "Summertime Blues" on tour earlier than that. Around the same time, they recorded a couple of studio versions, although these didn't see the light of day for many years.

Despite this, the version on Live at Leeds was a major success, peaking at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and reaching the top 40 in the U.K., Canada, and the Netherlands.

Last but not least, the most recent version to chart was in 1994 when Alan Jacksontransformed "Summertime Blues" into a country song. It topped the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart, which is the main major country music chart, and got to the fourth position on the U.S. Bubbling Under Hot 100 music chart.

Along with all of these versions of "Summertime Blues" that reached the music charts, there were also multiple other versions of the song released by artists over the years, further proving its enduring popularity.

In 2004, another rock legend group, Rush, released a version, and it got into the top 40 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, while others who took on the classic song are the Swedish rock band Hep Stars, country singer Buck Owens, Johnny Chester, and French singer Johnny Hallyday.

We Asked 3 Personal Trainers the #1 Move To Get ‘Pilates Arms’ and They All Said the Same Thing

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 9:50am

Summer is fast approaching, which means you may have a goal of building strong, toned arms for short sleeves, sundresses and beachwear. Putting in a little hard work now can lead to sculpted biceps, triceps and shoulders later. The best news here is that there’s no need to sign up for a pricey membership or even head to a Pilates studio to see noticeable results.

We asked three personal trainers what exercise you can add to your routine to achieve enviable “Pilates arms,” and they all agreed on the same move. This productive exercise can help define your arms while boosting upper-body strength and definition.

But before we dive into how to upgrade your arm-day workout, let’s address what “Pilates arms” are. Pilates arms typically refer to a lean, defined look that’s anything but bulky. You’ve likely seen Instagram videos of at-home workout enthusiasts training with lightweight dumbbells and bodyweight movements to achieve that coveted look—for good reason.

According to Rob Moal, CPT with Train Like Rob who’s based in Vancouver, BC, you can achieve Pilates arms with muscular endurance training, not hypertrophy.

“You're not enlarging the muscle fiber—you're increasing tone, density and postural definition,” Moal tells Parade. “The result is a longer, leaner silhouette with visible shoulder and arm definition rather than mass.”

Instead of working with heavy loads, Pilates helps those who practice it build strength through endurance and control—while putting the entire body to work. Below, trainers break down the best exercise to help you achieve Pilates arms and how to get started.

The Best Exercise To Build 'Pilates Arms,' According to 3 Personal Trainers

LumiNola/Getty Images

Now, let’s chat about exactly what this magical exercise is. Drumroll, please! Experts agree that narrow-grip pushups—or "Pilates pushups"—are the best move for sculpting lean, defined arms. This productive pushup variation involves placing your hands shoulder-width apart—or narrower—on the floor and keeping your elbows close to your body throughout the movement.

“This position shifts the load away from the chest and into the triceps and anterior shoulder, the two muscle groups that make up the majority of your arm's visible surface area,” Moal explains. “Most people focus on biceps, but anatomically, the triceps and shoulders account for far more of your arm's size and shape than the biceps do. That's where the Pilates arm look actually comes from.”

Another key benefit of the narrow-grip pushup? Because your chest is the main driver of the movement, you’re able to perform higher rep ranges without risking the bulky “gym arm” appearance you might get from isolation work or heavy pressing movements, Moal notes.

“High rep, high fatigue, low load, that's the endurance zone you want,” he stresses.

Narrow-grip pushups are also totally scalable. No matter your fitness level, you will challenge all of your pushing muscles—including the triceps, shoulders and chest.

“We can do a full pushup or perform them on our knees, and we can adjust further by elevating the hands. Doing narrow pushups against a barbell in a rack is a great way to modify and regress the movement,” says Matt Kasee, MS, CSCS, certified personal trainer and owner of Trilogy Fitness Systems. “The narrow-grip pushup will slightly increase the range of motion, biasing the triceps to do more work during the exercise. Anytime we can make a smaller muscle do more work with a larger load, in this case the triceps finishing the pushup, we will make that muscle work harder and get stronger over time.”

Overall, the narrow-grip pushup channels the type of controlled bodyweight resistance used in Pilates, where you’re actively resisting gravity with intention.

“That combination builds strength without bulk and helps create that defined, sculpted look,” notes Jade Winter, CEO, co-founder and trainer at Studio Pilates International.

How To Perform the Narrow-Grip Pushup With Proper Form

When performing narrow-grip pushups, keep a strong plank position throughout the movement. If you’re unable to complete pushups from the floor with proper form, Kasee recommends elevating your hands.

  1. Assume a high plank position with your hands placed under your shoulders or closer together. Your body should form a straight line from head to heels.
  2. Lower your chest toward the ground, keeping your elbows close to your body as you do so.
  3. Make sure the fronts of your shoulders do not round and your lower back doesn’t cave in.
  4. Press back up to a high plank, completely extending your arms and gently flexing your triceps at the top.

While sets and rep ranges can vary, Moal recommends aiming for a minimum of 15 to 20 reps, 30-second rest breaks and three to four sets, or working until fatigued. He says to keep rest breaks short, noting, “If you're resting 90 seconds between sets, you've shifted into hypertrophy training and out of the endurance zone that produces this look.”

How Form, Control and Tempo Can Impact Results

Control and form are essential in any exercise. When it comes to compound movements like the narrow-grip pushup, it’s important to control your tempo and range of motion to ensure you’re using the right muscles throughout.

“The two most common form faults in the narrow-grip pushup are the plank position failing, with hips dropping or piking up and the shoulders rounding forward at the bottom of the exercise,” says Kasee. “When doing exercises, tempo helps us make the muscles work harder throughout the set. This mechanical tension from tempo is a great stimulus for building muscle, which contributes to that toned look.”

In Pilates, it’s not about how many reps you’re able to complete—it’s about how well you’re able to perform them. Slowing down a movement increases time under tension, which is what establishes strength and definition.

“Proper form ensures you’re targeting the right muscles and not compensating through your neck or lower back. Control is what transforms this from a basic pushup into a highly effective sculpting exercise,” says Winter.

How Often To Do Narrow-Grip Pushups for Noticeable Results

As far as pushup frequency is concerned, this can vary depending on what your weekly training regimen looks like, overall physical activity levels and nutrition. Noticeable muscle changes take hard work, dedication and time and are the result of consistency in both your workout routine and diet.

“Another factor is how experienced somebody is in training; if they are new to exercise, visible results can happen much quicker than for people who have been exercising for a long time,” Kasee explains.

That said, with consistent training—i.e., performing narrow-grip pushups three times a week—you may notice visible toning in your triceps and shoulders within four to six weeks.

“[This timeframe is] faster than most expect, because they're not waiting for muscle size to change, just tone and definition to emerge,” Moal adds.

Moral of the story? If you’re looking to build lean, toned Pilates arms, adding narrow-grip pushups to your workouts is the name of the game. And remember—consistency is key in any successful routine.

Valerie Bertinelli Posed Nude for Her New Book Cover: ‘It Was Terrifying’

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 9:19am

Valerie Bertinelli recently released a new memoir, Getting Naked, which currently has a 4.5 rating on Amazon. Because of the title, the actress felt like she needed a cover to match—and recently opened up about the decision to pose nude during the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on April 18.

“It was terrifying,” she said. “But here's the deal. It's like when I was on the phone with my editor and I was saying, ‘I think because I'm calling it Getting Naked, I need to actually be naked on the cover. So I wanna try and explore that.' And she's like, ‘Great!' And then once it was out of my mouth, I kinda had to do it.”

View this post on Instagram

Bertinelli revealed that the photoshoot took place at her home. “I walked in [with] like a big sweater on … so I knew that I would be comfortable,” she said. “And at a certain point, I just said, ‘I'm just gonna do it.'”

She continued, “I'm one of those people that if I'm really afraid of something, I'm like, ‘Why? What are you so afraid of? What is it gonna hurt you? Just do it. Who the f--- cares?’ So I finally just did it. I did it, I'm not gonna do it again. But it was interesting to walk through that fear and get to the other side of it."

Getting Naked: The Quiet Work of Becoming Perfectly Imperfect was released on March 10. Amazon describes it as a vulnerable book that speaks about divorce, menopause, and generational pain. “She writes with clarity and compassion about the insecurities that have haunted her for decades: shame and anxiety about her body, and the false belief that her value depended on perfection. Through it all, Valerie reflects on the quiet, daily work of self-acceptance—the kind that doesn’t make headlines but changes lives,” the site says.

One reviewer raved, “Loved this book. Valerie was so honest and real. Super easy read. Just like she’s talking to you. Highly recommend.” Another said, “Loved this book! So inspirational! I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time. This just cemented it!”

The audiobook version is narrated by Bertinelli herself.

Ryan Coogler Reveals When The X-Files Starts Filming — and the Location Will Look Familiar

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 9:10am

Ryan Coogler's Hulu reboot of The X-Files has a pilot filming window, a working title, and a location that will mean something to anyone who grew up watching Mulder and Scully chasing the truth.

Production on the pilot is set to begin in May and run through June 2026 in Vancouver, British Columbia, the same city where the original series shot its first five seasons starting in 1993. The working title is Alphabet Soup. Coogler will write, direct, and produce the pilot, with Jennifer Yale serving as showrunner. Original series creator Chris Carter is on board as a non-writing executive producer.

Vancouver is a practical shooting location, but more importantly it's the city that gave The X-Files its original identity. The dense forests and rain-soaked streets of British Columbia provided the show's unmistakable atmosphere through five seasons (standing in for locations from Oregon to Siberia), before production relocated to Los Angeles in season six. That move coincided with a creative shift fans still debate. Returning to Vancouver is a nod to the show's roots.

The cast is equally attention-grabbing. Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Piano Lesson) and Himesh Patel (Yesterday, Station Eleven) will play the two lead FBI agents, entirely new characters, not new versions of Scully and Mulder. The official premise is that two highly decorated but very different agents form an unlikely partnership when they're assigned to a long-shuttered division investigating unexplained phenomena. The format will preserve what fans loved about the original, standalone monster-of-the-week cases alongside an overarching mythology and conspiracy arc.

Related: Gillian Anderson Loved the New X-Files Script — but David Duchovny Doesn't Even Know If Mulder Exists

Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully for eleven seasons across the original run and two revival seasons, has read the pilot script and called it 'really good,' adding that fans should 'give it a chance because it's gonna be f***ing cool.' She confirmed she has had multiple conversations with Coogler, leaving open the possibility of some kind of appearance. David Duchovny, who played Fox Mulder, told The Hollywood Reporter he's spoken with Coogler but hasn't read the script and doesn't yet know whether his character even exists in this new version of the show's world.

Coogler has been open about why this project matters to him personally. The X-Files was his mother's favorite show, and he's described it as one of the most beautiful American television series ever made. He's also brought in serious creative muscle. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who shot Sinners, will work on the pilot, and Coogler has credited conversations with Vince Gilligan, who wrote for the original series before creating Breaking Bad, as formative in shaping his approach.

The pilot still needs a full series order from Hulu before a premiere date is set. But with cameras heading to Vancouver next month, the truth is...in pre-production!

‘The Waltons’ Star Reveals How He Moved on From His Iconic Role as John-Boy

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 8:52am

Richard Thomas played John-Boy on The Waltons, a historical drama which ran from 1972 to 1981. The hit series was inspired by the book, Spencer's Mountain, which was written by the creator and screenwriter of the show, Earl Hamner Jr. Over its nine-year run, the series was nominated for several Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.

During an interview with Page Six, Thomas, who played the oldest boy in the family, discussed how he overcame typecasting after landing such an iconic role. “I figured, I’d been in the show for five years, it was going to take at least five years to sort of do enough work to start to balance the scales,” Thomas said.

He went on to gush about the show, saying, “I have nothing but only incredible gratitude, affection and fond memories. It was a wonderful piece of television for its time.” He continued, “The reach of that was phenomenal, and hard for people to understand today.”

After The Waltons came to an end, Thomas went on to play many different roles throughout his career. He portrayed Bill in the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's It and more recently played Atticus Finch in the 2022-2024 tour of To Kill a Mockingbird. He also appeared on hit shows like Ozark, NCIS: New Orleans, The Blacklist, Touched by an Angel, and The Adventures of Swiss Family Robinson.

When speaking about his recurring role as Special Agent Frank Gaad on The Americans, he said, “I loved it because it was kind of counterintuitive casting for me. [It] gave me really a wonderful opportunity to play a rather enigmatic character who sometimes you thought was OK, sometimes [you] thought he was just a d–k, you know?”

Thomas is celebrating his 75thbirthday on June 13. Although he still looks young, he claimed that he has never had any work done since foreheads are “one of the most expressive parts” of the face. “I don’t want to freeze any of it,” he said, “I mean, it’s falling apart, but what the hell?”

Golden Globe Winner, 76, Left Hollywood at the Height of Her Career—and She Has no Regrets

Ann Jillian, best known for her roles in Mr. Mom and Babes in Toyland, made the decision to put her family ahead of her career and walked away from Hollywood at the height of her career. After giving birth to her son, Andrew Joseph Murcia, Jillian wanted to stay home and raise her child. Now, more than three decades later, she's opening up about that decision.

"I’ve been out of it for a while. I’ve been out of it for a good reason. I gave birth to my one and only son when I was 42, and I took that seriously too," Jillian said on the Famous with Jacy Dawn Valeras podcast.

"Now, maybe somebody out there can do this, and good for them," she said, referring to balancing family life and a career. "I love that they can. For me, I recognize that I cannot. Since I like to focus on what I do, I cannot do all things at the same time."

"I can, over the course of a lifetime—the life that the good Lord has given me—I can do everything that I want to do, but not all at the same time. Ultimately, if you try to do it all at the same time, something is going to suffer because your focus is going to go away from one thing," she continued, adding, "and I was determined at my age, at 42, that it was more likely going to be my only son."

Jillian said that by the time she had her son, she felt she had a “great career,” but she chose to step back so she could be home every night to put him to bed. She didn’t want to miss the fleeting moments of being a mother—and she is happy with that decision.

Jillian has dabbled in acting since leaving Hollywood, with more than a dozen credits to her name in the 90s. Her last role, according to IMDb, was in an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger that aired in 2000.

The rug comes in three sizes: 6 by 9 feet, 8 by 10 feet, and 9 by 12 feet.In reviews, Walmart shoppers have praised the rug’s durability, and noted that it holds up surprisingly well over time. There are three color options including two orange tropical-inspired designs and a classic navy shade.

Beyond its durability, reviewers also noted an added benefit: the woven design helps reduce heat buildup, keeping surfaces cooler underfoot in hot weather and making it more comfortable to walk on barefoot during the summer months.

Legendary ‘Oklahoma!’ Actress and Last Surviving Original Cast Member Turns 100

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 8:15am

Broadway history has few remaining living connections to its earliest modern era, and one of its most remarkable is celebrating a huge milestone as she turns 100 years old on April 26, 2026.

Actress and dancer Bambi Linn, best known for her work in the original Broadway production of Oklahoma!, has turned 100 years old, marking a rare centennial for a performer whose career stretches back to what is widely considered a defining moment in American musical theater.

Born on April 26, 1926, Linn built her early career during the so-called “Golden Age” of Broadway, a period when musical theater was evolving and growing into the dynamite industry it is today.

She was part of the original Broadway company of Oklahoma!, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that premiered in 1943 and is frequently credited with changing the course of American stage history. The musical is the first to be written by the legendary duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and it's based on the 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs.

The story is set in 1906 in rural Oklahoma and follows a young woman named Laurey Williams as she faces two suitors, the cowboy named Curly and the farm hand named Jud. Throughout the musical, Laurey tries to figure out which man she truly has feelings for during the day leading up to a box social dance that night, where everyone comes together, and chaos ensues.

Linn's debut in Oklahoma! was also her first role on stage ever, after training as a dancer for a long time. She originated the role of Aggie and was an ensemble dancer.

In an interview with writer Jim Colleran, Linn said of the musical's legacy, "Oklahoma! was made for the people. And the people made Oklahoma! If the audience hadn't received it the way it did, Oklahoma! would not have been Oklahoma!"

Over a decade after the original Broadway production of Oklahoma! premiered, Linn returned to the classic story for the 1955 film adaptation. This time around, she took on the role of Dream Laurey, performing the show's famous ballet dance routine.

As of writing, Linn is the last surviving member of the original Oklahoma! opening night cast.

After her Broadway debut, Linn continued working as an actress and dancer, appearing in Carousel in 1945, Alice in Wonderland in 1947, and I Can Get It for You Wholesale in 1962, among other productions. She eventually retired from the stage and dance to live a private life with her family.

1966 Ballad, Which Was Originally a Famous Italian Song, Became a No. 1 Hit 60 Years Ago

Sun, 04/26/2026 - 8:11am

"You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" is the English version of a 1965 Italian song titled "Io che non vivo (senza te),” which was written by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini. The song reached No. 1 in Italy after being introduced at the Sanremo Festival. Dusty Springfield, who is considered one of the greatest female singers in pop music, was in the audience while the song was performed and said she was moved to tears by it, even though she didn’t understand any of the lyrics.

Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell, who had no experience as songwriters, wrote their own lyrics to fit the song's melody. In 1966, Springfield recorded it, but she wasn’t satisfied with the sound at first. It took her 47 takes in order to be happy with her own vocals.

"You Don't Have to Say You Love Me,” which was released on March 25, went on to become her most popular single. 60 years ago today, it reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It also rose to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Decades later, "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me” even made the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Springfield, whose real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, started out in the group, the Lana Sisters. Then she moved onto a folk-pop group with her brother called the Springfields. Two of their songs reached No. 5 on the UK charts, but she ventured out on her own and began her solo career in 1963. Some of her most popular songs were "Son of a Preacher Man," "I Only Want to Be with You,” and "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"

Springfield also worked in television, presenting episodes of the British series, Ready Steady Go! and hosting her own BBC series. Throughout her career, she was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the UK Music Hall of Fame. She died of breast cancer in 1999 at the age of 59.
