Hoping for a promotion at work or more success with your business? Craving a more fulfilling life, improved relationships and/or a health boost? If so, you might have Googled phrases like “healthy habits,” “how to succeed” and “how to be more effective.” Maybe you wandered through the self-help section in your local bookstore or searched for similar books on Amazon. Or maybe you haven’t done any of those things, but you’re still interested in the topic.

Regardless, you might have come across the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, written by Stephen Covey, an educator, author and businessman. Published in 1989, it entails exactly what the headline suggests: habits that make someone effective, aka, help them get results without sacrificing their needs or relationships. As a global bestseller, it’s obviously pretty popular.

But since it was written decades ago—before so many political changes, technological advances and more occurred—does it hold up today? Is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People still relevant? Parade asked three psychologists to weigh in, sharing their general takes, what they think Covey got right and wrong, changes they would make and answers to other questions you might have. Do Psychologists Think the ‘7 Habits’ Stand the Test of Time?

Psychologists think the psychology of Stephen Covey’s habits does apply to today’s world—with some nuance.

“While I believe the principles do still hold up, the psychology underneath how we apply them has become much more sophisticated in the years since it was written,” says Lisa Thomson, a registered psychologist and the owner of Core Psychology in Calgary, Canada.

It’s a relevant philosophy for living and leading, she continues, but relies on dated characteristics (which she’ll describe later).

“I do think they stand the test of time for the most part,” agrees Dr. Amy Vigliotti, PhD, a licensed psychologist and founder at SelfWorks. She points to suggestions such as taking responsibility, setting goals, listening, self-reflecting and having healthy habits.

Dr. Scott Glassman, PsyD, a licensed psychologist and the director of the Master of Applied Positive Psychology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, finds that we’re still in the goal-oriented, outcomes-driven society aligning with the book’s premise. However, he believes we need to get more holistic.

“I would say that we need a more dimensional view of success, well-being and happiness than what 7 Habits offers, a view that takes into account the ever-increasing challenges of isolating technology, environmental degradation, socioeconomic stressors, political and cultural divides, identity complexity and the impacts of individual and collective trauma,” he explains. 

What Are the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People?

The aforementioned seven habits include:

• Be proactive: Focus on what you can control and take responsibility for your life.
• Begin with the end in mind: Be clear on your goals and values.
• Put first things first: Realize not everything is urgent, and prioritize.
• Think win-win: Seek outcomes that respect everyone’s interests, and collaborate.
• Seek first to understand, then to be understood: Listen with genuine curiosity and lead with empathy.
• Synergize: Value differences; utilize people’s various strengths and perspectives.
• Sharpen the saw: Invest in your well-being, practice self-care and rest to keep your work sustainable.

The Psychological Verdict: Where Stephen Covey Got It Right

What specific habits do today’s psychologists agree with? 

Move ‘private victory’ to ‘public victory’

Output isn’t the only thing that matters—effectiveness is relational.

“Effectiveness is also about character, self-awareness, relationships and living consistently with what matters to you,” Thomson says. “How we lead, communicate and relate to others is influenced by how well we understand and manage ourselves.”

“Listening, kindness, teamwork: All these things are so important for success,” Dr. Vigliotti adds.

Agency and listening are important

Respect people’s autonomy and interests.

“People often know what they should do,” Thomson says. “The challenge is acting on it consistently when they are stressed, afraid, overwhelmed or caught in familiar patterns.”

Success requires self-care

Self-care is necessary to success, and Covey knew it.

“‘Sharpen the saw’ was a very early way of naming that rest, health, reflection and renewal are part of long-term performance, rather than distractions from it,” Thomson states.

Dr. Glassman appreciates this, too, asking people to “know their internal ‘temperatures’ in a world that often seeks to keep us outwardly focused.”

Live by your values

Dr. Vigliotti agrees with Covey that it’s important to live life according to your values, which could include lifelong learning, connectivity, vulnerability, appreciation and self-improvement.

“All these things are very, very much supported by psychological research,” she shares.

Dr. Glassman adds that values can lead to course corrections and greater fulfillment.

Be proactive and accountable 

This is especially valuable for people who feel helpless or stuck in passive patterns. 

“Cognitive-behavioral approaches ask us to look at habitual ways we’ve learned to think about ourselves and evaluate our abilities, and adjust our perspective when those thoughts and beliefs hold us back,” Dr. Glassman tells Parade. “The evidence base in psychology has consistently demonstrated a perceptual component to happiness and empowerment that Covey taps into.”

Where the 1989 Framework Falls Short in Today’s World

Let’s dive into some Stephen Covey “7 Habits” critiques. 

Behavioral change isn’t that straightforward

This is the “biggest limitation,” according to Thomson. It suggests if people clarify their values, make good decisions and practice discipline, they’ll follow through—which isn’t always true. 

“Modern psychology tells us that behavior is also shaped by nervous system responses, automatic habits, mental health, neurodiversity, relationships, culture and environment,” she explains.

There’s too much focus on individualism 

While 7 Habits is relational in some ways, it’s individualistic in others.

“[The book] says a lot about how the individual should function, but less about what happens when someone is working within an unhealthy family, workplace or social system,” Thomson notes.

Emotional regulation also plays a role

Thomson would place greater emphasis on acknowledging and regulating emotions.

“Being proactive does not mean overriding fear, grief, anger or anxiety,” she says. “We need to be able to understand and tolerate our internal experiences, not simply rise above them.”

It doesn’t speak to digital media

Written in the late ’80s, there’s little talk of smartphones and social media.

“I think newer research is focusing and showing that our environment, even our digital environment, stress, mental health and relationships all affect our behavior, and there’s less talk about that in the book,” Dr. Vigliotti states.

The prescriptions are too mechanistic and monolithic

Dr. Glassman thinks Covey limits the range of what’s holistically fulfilling and meaningful.

“He over-emphasizes outcomes, ‘win-win’ versus process, sidestepping our emotional lives and the wisdom that can be found in painful experiences,” he explains. “You get the sense his framework might be more helpful for a business professional who needs some assistance in goal-oriented pursuits versus someone with anxiety and depression who yearns to find greater balance, happiness and internal peace.”

How Modern Psychologists Recommend Updating the 7 Habits

Psychologists today would make some adjustments to the seven habits. 

“If I were to update the seven habits, I might provide more practical and psychologically informed ways to apply them,” Thomson tells Parade. 

Here are psychologist-backed examples:

• Combine Covey’s emphasis on values with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help people move towards what means most to them.
• Merge the habits with positive psychology, such as gratitude, mindfulness, savoring, kindness, self-compassion, acceptance, openness and positive self-regard.
• Bring in “small habits” that can become routine.
• Add psychological safety to relational habits; create an environment where there’s listening, collaboration and support.
• Expand “sharpen the saw” to include emotional recovery, boundaries, self-compassion and rest.

Wondering how legit the seven habits are, psychologists’ main critique or which habit is most important? Keep reading.

Are the 7 Habits based on real psychological science?

Not in an “evidence-based treatment” way. 

“His framework grew more from philosophy, character ethics, leadership principles and applied wisdom rather than from controlled psychological research,” Thomson explains.

That doesn’t mean it’s invalid, however.

“While the seven habits aren’t based on psychological science and the book is not a scientific model, many of its ideas match what psychologists find,” Dr. Vigliotti says.

Plus, certain aspects have theoretical and empirical support, Dr. Glassman clarifies, such as self-efficacy, collaboration, empathy, self-care and a values-based approach. 

“For example, Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory highlights the role of values-consistent action and intrinsic motivation,” he says. “Many studies offer support for the connection between self-efficacy and well-being.”

What is the main critique of Stephen Covey’s ‘7 Habits’?

Interestingly, each psychologist has a different #1 critique.

“My main critique is that it tells people what effective functioning looks like, but it does not always explain how to get there when human psychology gets in the way,” Thomson says.

In other words, how can someone apply these habits when they’re traumatized, emotionally overstimulated or neurodivergent?

For Dr. Vigliotti, the main critique is relevancy.

“There’s less talk about how our environment, even our digital environment, stress, mental health and relationships affect our behavior, and that’s something newer research is focusing on and showing more of,” she shares.

Dr. Glassman emphasizes the lack of holism.

“It’s the outcome-focused, individual-centric framework Covey uses that limits the benefits from a holistic wellness perspective,” he notes.

Which of the habits is most important today?

According to Thomson and Dr. Vigliotti, the most important habit today is “Seek first to understand, then to be understood”—especially in a culture that rewards speed, certainty and strong reactions. 

“One thing I find myself reminding clients of all the time is that understanding someone doesn’t require agreement,” Thomson says. “It means becoming curious enough to understand the context, emotions and experiences shaping another person’s perspective.” She’s found this can lower defensiveness, build trust and make people more willing to listen in return.

Dr. Vigliotti adds it’s even more important after COVID and the social anxiety it caused. She says focusing on this habit “is going to lead to so much goodness,” such as stronger relationships, reduced conflict and improved teamwork.

“Listening is really the foundation of how strong relationships are built,” she continues. “Taking the time to slow down and really seeking understanding is going to make a world of difference.”

Dr. Glassman points to a different habit: beginning with the end in mind, or values and mission clarity.

“Having this clarity can exert a positive gravitational force on daily habits and behavior, which in turn can lead to a stronger sense of meaning, purpose and alignment… This, in turn, contributes to more individual happiness as well as the greater well-being of our families and communities.”

While Covey’s habits don’t perfectly align with what today’s psychologists would suggest, many of the habits do hold. Not only can they make you “highly effective,” but they can bring happiness and purpose to your life, too.

And, honestly, he’ll look great right next to my whimsical cow butter dish. Because kitchen accessories should be fun, OK? And this chicken crock is nothing short of fun.

Made from ceramic, it has that classic, sturdy feel you want from a serving piece, while the playful chicken shape brings a little charm to the table. In a real-life Exorcist moment, Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber revealed she was “possessed” as a child. Yes, that kind of possession. The one you’ve seen in horror films and on TV. 

Before heading to the set to film American Horror Story season 10, her iconic supermodel mother did something…well, out of the ordinary. Instead of giving her a few acting tips, packing her a snack, or slipping her a lucky charm, she gifted Kaia with something totally unexpected. 

During a recent appearance on ‘The Mitch Churi Chat Show,’ Gerber told the host a wild story: “Do you know how they did the exorcism? My mom gave me holy water to go to set with because she was like, ‘I don’t want you to get possessed.” I was told I was possessed as a child.”

Whoa. Possessed? Yes, according to Kaia, “I just was possessed. I was haunted my whole life.”

Of course, fans have to know more about Cindy Crawford’s daughter’s alleged childhood demonic possession. 

When Australian podcast host comedian Mitch Churi asked, “Did you have an exorcism?” Gerber replied, “I actually did…Oh wait, this is actually perfect for you. Do you know how they did the exorcism? They played a didgeridoo all over me. That’s how they did the exorcism.”

She continued, “That actually did happen, and I’ve never talked about it, but that actually did happen.”

Whether Kaia was or wasn’t possessed, it looks like things turned out well for Crawford’s look-alike daughter. The brunette beauty started modeling when she was just 10-years-old, starring in a campaign for Young Versace. By the age of 13, she had signed with IMG Models and made her New York Fashion Week runway debut at 16. 

In 2021, she hit the small screen in American Horror Story. Gerber (whose father is Crawford’s husband, entrepreneur Rande Gerber) also appeared in Apple TV’s Palm Royale, HBO’s Hacks, and Amazon Prime Video’s Overcompensating. If you spend any amount of time on #FoodTok, there’s a very good chance you know Chef Tini Younger. The professionally trained chef and content creator first started gaining a following with her cooking videos before competing on Season 2 of Gordon Ramsay’s Next Level Chef in 2023. I recently saw a viral macaroni salad recipe of hers all over my feed, so obviously, I needed to try it. Pasta salad is a summer staple at my house, especially when burgers and hot dogs are on the grill—a good creamy macaroni salad is one of those classic sides that works with almost anything. Tini’s version has all of the familiar elements you want, but she adds a few smart and different ingredients that make it much more interesting than your standard deli-counter macaroni salad. The Secret Sauce: Chef Tini’s Dressing Ingredients

The dressing is where Tini really packs in the flavor. She combines 1 cup mayonnaise with 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar and 1 teaspoon smoked paprika.

Then, she seasons the mixture with garlic powder, Old Bay seasoning, salt and pepper to taste. Finely chopped bread-and-butter pickle chips also go right into the dressing, adding little pops of sweetness and acidity throughout the salad.

Tini doesn’t give exact measurements for the garlic powder, Old Bay, salt or pepper, so start small, taste and adjust until it’s seasoned the way you like it.

If you don’t have red wine vinegar, Tini says white vinegar or apple cider vinegar will work too.

The Crunch Factor: Prepping the Veggies

One thing I immediately liked about this viral macaroni salad is that Tini doesn’t skimp on the vegetables. While the pasta cooks, finely dice one celery stalk, one red bell pepper and one red onion, then add them to a large mixing bowl with 1 cup shredded carrots.

You want everything chopped fairly small so you get a little bit of crunch and flavor in every forkful rather than huge pieces of vegetables competing with the macaroni. Between the celery, pepper, onion, carrots and chopped pickles, there’s plenty of texture to balance out that creamy dressing.

Ingredients Needed

To make Chef Tini’s macaroni salad recipe, you’ll need 1 pound elbow macaroni, 1 stalk celery, 1 red bell pepper, 1 red onion, 1 cup shredded carrots and 2 tablespoons finely chopped bread-and-butter pickle chips.

For the dressing, you’ll need 1 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, plus garlic powder, Old Bay seasoning, salt and pepper to taste.

It’s a pretty straightforward grocery list, I ended up having all of the ingredients to make this between my refrigerator and pantry…we love to save a trip to the store!

How To Make Chef Tini’s Viral Macaroni Salad

Start by bringing a large pot of water to a boil and cooking 1 pound of elbow macaroni for about seven minutes, or until tender.

Drain the pasta and allow it to cool slightly. While the macaroni cooks, dice the celery, red bell pepper and red onion and add them to a large bowl with the shredded carrots.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the chopped bread-and-butter pickles, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar and smoked paprika, then season with garlic powder, Old Bay, salt and pepper to taste.

Once the dressing is smooth and creamy, add the cooked macaroni to the bowl of vegetables, pour the dressing over everything and gently fold until the pasta and veggies are evenly coated.

Cover the bowl and refrigerate the macaroni salad for at least one hour before serving.

The Golden Rule: Why You MUST Make It Ahead of Time

Don’t skip the chilling time! Tini recommends refrigerating the macaroni salad for at least an hour before serving, and it really does make a difference. That time in the refrigerator allows the pasta to cool completely and gives all of those flavors, from the Dijon and red wine vinegar to the Old Bay and smoked paprika, a chance to come together.

It’s also what makes this such a great make-ahead BBQ side. You can assemble the whole thing before your guests arrive and pull it out of the refrigerator when you’re ready to eat. In fact, I thought it was even better the next day. Just give it a good stir before serving to redistribute the dressing and make sure everything is creamy and well coated.

Recipe Review: My Honest Thoughts

This was a really solid macaroni salad recipe. It had everything I want in a great pasta salad: crisp, well-chopped vegetables, plenty of texture and a creamy dressing with enough flavor to keep things interesting.

I especially loved the red bell pepper. I think red pepper belongs in a good pasta salad and elbows are such a great pasta shape for this style of recipe. They’re classic for a reason and give you the perfect pasta-to-veggie-to-dressing ratio in every bite.

The dressing was probably my favorite part. The Old Bay seasoning is such a unique addition, and I loved that Tini used smoked paprika instead of regular paprika. It gives the whole salad a subtle smoky punch that works especially well when you’re serving it alongside food straight from the grill.

The Dijon mustard is also necessary here; it adds tang and depth and keeps the mayonnaise-based dressing from tasting flat or overly rich. And those little pieces of sweet bread-and-butter pickles add just the right amount of sweetness.

If I were to make it again, I might add another few scoops of mayo (I’m an extra creamy salad kinda gal!) and maybe a few more pickles. They were such a fun addition.

We originally ate this as a side with dinner, but the next day I added a can of tuna to the leftovers for lunch, and it was SO good. It instantly turned the macaroni salad from a summer side dish into a really satisfying main. That’s absolutely how I’ll be eating the leftovers from now on.

Chef Tini does it again! This macaroni salad is creamy, crunchy, packed with flavor and officially earned a spot in my summer side dish rotation. If you’re headed to a barbecue or just need something delicious to serve with dinner, this is one viral recipe that’s absolutely worth trying.

Akin to retro thrillers like Cloverfield, Super 8, Jurassic Park, and even Edgar Wright’s Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy, Mitchell’s film has Warner Bros. and big-time producer J.J. Abrams behind it. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor star, alongside Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. Together, they make up the Platts, the family at the center of the action going down in their Michigan neighborhood against a totally primitive backdrop.

“I’m just calling back that feeling I had as a kid, where I could be in the yard looking over to the dead-end street nearby, looking down into the woods,” Mitchell told the AU Review of his inspiration for his retro film. “There was this old brick or rock wall, and it was just imagining what’s in the shadows, you know? What’s beyond the chain-link fence? As a kid, just thinking about the films that I had seen, the stories I’d read, and imagining those things in my own suburban world, and then as an adult trying to remember that feeling. I do think it’s a little bit burned into my brain, that feeling.”

As the movie is set in the early ’80s, the film’s soundtrack appropriately echoes the sounds of the time, with needle drops from Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” The Cars’ “Shake It Up,” Steve Winwood’s “Valerie,” Roxy Music’s “More Than This,” and Jefferson Starship’s “Find Your Way Back” all setting the mood. The film’s official trailer also features a cut of Elton John’s “My Life.” 

Meanwhile, Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, whose credits include Star Trek and Super 8, both Abrams’ productions, as well as Ratatouille, Up, The Batman, and numerous Marvel films, created an original score that channels the spirit of John Williams, adding an extra layer of retro blockbuster magic.

“David has a remarkable ability to build dread in a way that feels effortless, balancing quiet tension with moments that genuinely get under your skin,” Giacchino said via The Associated Press. “It’s a rare combination, and I’m grateful to have been a part of this one.”

No stranger to a high-concept film, Mitchell won over critics in 2010 with his directorial feature debut, a “somber and sweet” portrait of adolescence called The Myth of the American Sleepover. Made on a shoestring budget, the award-winning indie was celebrated for its authenticity but failed to really find a large audience. 

In 2014, however, Mitchell unleashed It Follows, a high-concept supernatural horror film that cultivated major buzz on the film festival circuit before scoring big with both fans and critics. Today, the film is widely considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

Though Mitchell’s 2018 film, a noir-style mystery called Under the Silver Lake, failed to really connect with audiences, the director is definitely back on track with his first film in eight years. With its primeval critters, suburbia chaos, and killer ’80s soundtrack, The End of Oak Street may be the closest thing to a lost summer blockbuster from another era fans will ever get.

Bobby Flay is making sure everyone knows just how highly he thinks of his girlfriend Brooke Williamson.

The Food Network star celebrated Williamson’s 47th birthday on Saturday, August 15 with a sweet Instagram carousel featuring four photos along with a touching message. “Happy birthday to the most talented chef in the universe, @chefbrookew,” Flay, 61, wrote. “She’s pretty cute too! Xo”

One photo showed Williamson wearing a pink dress with bow details while digging into what appeared to be a key lime pie. Another captured the pair dressed up for a recent day at the races, with Williamson in a brown polka-dot dress and Flay sporting a checked suit.

Williamson also posed poolside in a striped swimsuit in another snap, while perhaps the most romantic shot showed the chefs dancing as Flay dipped his girlfriend.

Williamson had an equally sweet response to the tribute, commenting, “I love you forever ❤️”

And fans loved the tribute, too.

Flay and Williamson have known each other for years through their work on Food Network, including Bobby’s Triple Threat, Beat Bobby Flay, and BBQ Brawl. Their friendship eventually turned romantic, with reports confirming they were dating in March 2025. They made one of their first public outings as a couple at a New York Knicks game the following month.

Williamson’s birthday also comes during a big week for her family. On August 10, the Top Chef winner shared a photo after dropping her only son, Hudson Roberts, off at New York University for his first year of college. For anyone who grew up being, well, a Star Trek nerd like me, the price for watching all the Trek movies just dropped to zero . Beginning Friday, August 14, Pluto TV launches a dedicated Star Trek pop-up that turns the free, ad-supported service into a six-decade tour of the final frontier.

The pop-up brings together seven live channels timed to count down to Star Trek Day on September 8, the date the original series first aired on NBC in 1966 and the franchise’s official 60th anniversary. Five of the channels are dedicated to the classic broadcast series: The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. Those series feeds have long served as free entry points to decades of episodes, from the 1966 original through the Scott Bakula-led prequel. Two more channels are built around the films.

The centerpiece for movie fans is Star Trek: The Motion Pictures, a channel streaming all 13 theatrical films live and on demand, from 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture through 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. That run covers the six original-cast films led by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, the four Next Generation features with Patrick Stewart, and the three Kelvin-timeline reboots starring Chris Pine. A companion channel, Star Trek en Español, carries the identical slate in Spanish, widening access for a bigger audience.

Those two new movie channels expand a Star Trek presence that already lived on the Paramount-owned service through the five series feeds. Because the films also stream on demand, fans can pick a single title instead of waiting for it to cycle on the linear channel. The service works through web browsers, iOS and Android devices, streaming sticks, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and smart TVs from Sony, LG, Vizio, and Hisense.

Fans may be wanting to revisit old Trek just now. Star Trek has no new series or films in active production, and Strange New Worlds is moving toward a shortened final season, which leaves the anniversary leaning on archives rather than fresh episodes. The newer Paramount+ shows, including Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy, are not part of the pop-up, and neither is The Animated Series. The focus stays on the eras that built the fanbase across broadcast television and the big screen.

There is one catch worth noting. The category is scheduled to run through Star Trek Day on September 8, though some reporting indicates the channels and content will linger later into the month before coming down. Fans who want to work through all 13 films, or leave a Star Trek channel running the way earlier generations left the show on after school, have a defined window to do it. Six decades of Starfleet history are free to stream for the length of the celebration.

When Neil Young released “Heart of Gold” in 1972, he was already respected as one of rock’s finest songwriters. What he couldn’t have known was that the gentle acoustic ballad would become the biggest hit of his career and eventually earn the admiration of another music legend, Johnny Cash.

Written during sessions for Young’s landmark album Harvest, “Heart of Gold” came together at an unexpected moment.

After a back injury temporarily prevented him from playing electric guitar, Young turned to acoustic instruments and stripped-back arrangements.

“I was in and out of hospitals for the two years between After The Gold Rush and Harvest,” Young told Rolling Stone in 1975. “My discs slipped. I couldn’t hold my guitar up. That’s why I sat down on my whole solo tour. I couldn’t move around too well, so I laid low for a long time on the ranch and just didn’t have any contact, you know. I wore a brace [and] I recorded most of Harvest in the brace. That’s a lot of the reason it’s such a mellow album. I couldn’t physically play an electric guitar.”

It was during that time Young wrote Heart of Gold, a deeply personal song about searching for authenticity and connection, featuring memorable harmonica passages and harmony vocals from James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt.

“We were sat on the couch in the control room, but I had to get up on my knees to be on the same level as James because he’s so tall,” Ronstadt later told Mojo. “Then we sang all night, the highest notes I could sing. It was so hard, but nobody minded. It was dawn when we walked out of the studio.”

The recording resonated almost immediately.

Released as the lead single from Harvest, “Heart of Gold” climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the only chart-topping single of Young’s career. It also reached the top of the charts in Canada and helped propel Harvest to become the best-selling album in the United States in 1972, firmly establishing Young as one of the defining singer-songwriters of his generation.

Its influence continued to grow long after its initial success.

Artists from a wide range of genres have recorded their own interpretations of “Heart of Gold,” but one of the most notable came from Johnny Cash, who covered the song during the later years of his remarkable career. Cash’s rich, weathered voice brought a different emotional perspective to Young’s lyrics, demonstrating how the song’s themes of hope and self-discovery could resonate across generations and musical styles.

That ability to connect with listeners has helped “Heart of Gold” remain one of Young’s signature compositions.

Its timeless melody, introspective lyrics, and universal message continue to make it a staple of classic rock radio and one of the most beloved songs in his catalog. More than five decades later, it remains the benchmark against which many of Young’s greatest recordings are measured.

“I’d happened to be in the right place at the right time to do a really mellow record that was really open because that’s where my life was at the time,” Young later recalled. “I was in love when I made Harvest. So that was it. I was an in-love and on-top-of-the-world type of guy.”

Fifty-four years after its release, “Heart of Gold” continues to shine as one of rock’s defining soft rock classics. From becoming Neil Young’s only No. 1 hit to being embraced by Johnny Cash, the 1972 song has proven that a heartfelt search for something genuine never goes out of style.

Following the release of the leading single, “The Traveler (Into the Light),” from their forthcoming album, the band is giving fans another sneak peek at the color of Indigo.

Dropped Aug. 12, “Echo of You” is a spacey, electronica-focused production, initially written by keyboardist Geoff Downes and bassist Harry Whitley. An uplifting tune with a twist, the track taps into a deep personal connection and preserves the group’s nostalgic arena rock sound while adding modern polish.

“Echo of You” follows the lead single, “The Traveler (Into the Light),” released July 6. An energetic arena rock anthem, the track captures the spirit of ’80s rock while standing out as a melodic progressive rock gem.

“The first track off the album is a high-energy piece, with a few elements of prog trickery but retaining the accessible chorus block, which was always a signature of Asia’s music,” Downes, who also wrote this song with Whitley, said, per the band’s official website. “It’s a song of great optimism, mainly about looking forward to the future and traveling ‘into the light.’ Play it loud!”

According to the band, their 14th studio album, Indigo, bridges the future, present, and past, honoring the iconic supergroup’s legacy while also crafting a new chapter over 15 tracks and one bonus song. Featuring the supergroup’s new lineup, consisting of Downes and Whitley, alongside Virgil Donati and John Mitchell, the album is set for a Nov. 6 release through Frontiers Music Srl. Pre-order is now available.

Writing the forthcoming album began in 2015, following the release of Gravitas in 2014. Downes shared that he and John Wetton, one of the band’s founding members and former lead vocalist, started putting ideas together before Wetton became ill. Tragically, Wetton passed away in 2017, with Downes planning to finish the record in Wetton’s name.

Tributes to the late rocker are seen and heard throughout Indigo, notably in “Tattoo Indigo (Parts 2 & 3)” and “Chesapeake Bay,” which grew out of the final writing sessions between Downes and the late Wetton. His presence is further celebrated in the tonsils of Harry Whitley, whose lead vocalist sound and phrasing evoke Wetton, according to the band.

Formed in 1981, Asia brought together members and former members of Yes, The Buggles, King Crimson, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, creating one of rock’s most celebrated supergroups. Making their debut in 1982 with their self-titled album, they hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 4 million copies.

Asia remains one of the most iconic supergroups of all time—and longest-standing. The band is still active, touring and performing shows. Though, currently, there’s no standard global or regional tour scheduled, Asia is confirmed to perform live on the Cruise to the Edge, sailing April 2 to 8, next year.

In 1966, Batman exploded onto television and turned its colorful cast of heroes and villains into pop culture icons. Six decades later, only a handful of the stars most closely associated with the beloved series are still alive.

On Aug. 16, Julie Newmar, who originated the role of Catwoman on the series, celebrates her 93rd birthday.

Newmar appeared as the feline villain in 13 episodes of Batman across its first two seasons, opposite Adam West’s Batman and Burt Ward’s Robin. She became so closely identified with the character that her take on Catwoman remains one of the defining portrayals of the DC Comics villain.

Today, Newmar and Ward, 81, are the only two last surviving major stars of the 1966 series. West died in 2017 at 88, while other familiar faces from the show, including Yvonne Craig, Cesar Romero, Burgess Meredith and Frank Gorshin, have also died.

Newmar was already an accomplished performer long before she slipped into Catwoman’s famous catsuit.

Born Julia Chalene Newmeyer on Aug. 16, 1933, in Los Angeles, Newmar began dancing as a child and was performing as a prima ballerina with the Los Angeles Opera by age 15.

She appeared as a dancer in films including The Band Wagon and Demetrius and the Gladiators before landing the role of Dorcas in the 1954 musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Broadway followed, including appearances in Silk Stockings and Li’l Abner.

In 1958, Newmar originated the role of Katrin Sveg in The Marriage-Go-Round, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She later reprised the role for the 1961 movie and earned a Golden Globe nomination.

Television ultimately brought Newmar her most famous role. She first appeared as Catwoman during Batman’s debut season in 1966 and returned for the second season.

Newmar revealed in a June 2026 interview with The Guardian that she hadn’t even heard of Batman when the opportunity came her way. She was preparing to go to dinner when she received a call about playing Catwoman, and it was her younger brother, then visiting from Harvard, who convinced her to take the job.

“‘Batman!’ he said. ‘We stop all our studies and watch that every Wednesday … Hey, sister, out the door, get on the plane, get the script, do it.'”

Newmar also put her own stamp on Catwoman’s look. Her background as a dancer helped her develop the character’s feline movements, and she told The Guardian that she “adopted two cats in order to watch their physical behaviour.” She also altered the costume herself, lowering the belt to her hips and taking in the outfit until, as she put it, “it was like liquorice poured over the body; it fit that well.”

The costume eventually became part of the Smithsonian Institution’s collection.

Lee Meriwether stepped into the role for the 1966 Batman feature film, while Eartha Kitt portrayed Catwoman during the show’s third and final season.

But Newmar wasn’t finished with Selina Kyle.

A remarkable 50 years after first playing Catwoman, she returned to voice the character in the 2016 animated movie Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. She reprised the role once more in 2017’s Batman vs. Two-Face, reuniting with West and Ward for another adventure inspired by their original series.

Newmar accumulated an impressive list of television credits outside Gotham City.

She appeared on The Twilight Zone, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Monkees, Get Smart, Bewitched, Columbo, The Bionic Woman, Fantasy Island and The Love Boat, among many others. She also played Eleen in the 1967 Star Trek episode “Friday’s Child.”

In 1992, she appeared in the music video for George Michael’s “Too Funky.” Three years later, her place in pop culture was immortalized right in the title of the movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, in which she made a cameo as herself.

Newmar’s interests also extended well beyond acting. In the 1970s, she became an inventor, receiving multiple U.S. patents for designs involving pantyhose and bras. She also studied real estate at UCLA and became a successful real estate investor, following in the footsteps of her parents.

More than 70 years after her earliest screen appearances and 60 years after she first prowled onto television screens as Catwoman, Newmar remains indelibly connected to one of the most famous characters in the Batman universe.

And at 93, she’s one of the precious few remaining links to the television phenomenon that first brought Gotham City into millions of American living rooms.

Parents can teach you what to do and what not to do. In the case of Adam Scott’s daughter, it’s the latter. Turns out, even famous parents can mortify their kids just like the rest of us.

The Severance star recently shared a hilarious story about his daughter, who was taking part in an acting program in New York this summer while Scott was in the city filming Season 3 of the series. As reported by PEOPLE, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Scott explained that one of his daughter’s teachers decided to show the class his audition for The Office. There was just one problem: Scott didn’t get the part.

The teacher followed Scott’s audition with John Krasinski’s successful audition for the role of Jim Halpert and asked the students to discuss why Krasinski got the job and Scott didn’t. “He had no idea,” Scott said. Although he could appreciate the absurdity of the situation, his daughter apparently wanted to disappear. “She was mortified,” he said.

Things got even more awkward when after class, the teacher stopped her and asked whether she knew either actor. He eventually put together the connection between her last name and Scott and realized exactly whose audition he’d just used as an example. According to Scott, the teacher “felt terrible.”

But perhaps his daughter can take some comfort in knowing that her dad’s career turned out well anyway. Krasinski went on to play Jim on The Office from 2005 to 2013, while Scott found another beloved workplace comedy in Parks and Recreation, where he played Ben Wyatt alongside Amy Poehler.

And Scott has apparently experienced another very relatable parent problem: his own kids aren’t particularly interested in watching some of his biggest shows. He’s previously joked that his children watched The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine but somehow skipped Parks and Recreation, despite his repeated assurances that they’d love it.

They eventually started watching Severance, giving Scott the consolation that he could “at least” count them as viewers. So yes, even when your dad is Adam Scott, he can still embarrass you in front of your classmates. Maybe that’s the great equalizer of parenthood.

Cancer is often considered something that “only” affects the elderly. The median age for a first cancer diagnosis is 67 years, though averages vary by cancer type. However, cancer can strike anyone of any age. Sobering recent data showed that the rate of people under 50 developing cancer increased nearly 80% from 1990 to 2019, and deaths from these cancers rose by almost 28% over the same period.

Enough doom. The good news is that modern medicine has come a long way in recent decades, and early detection can be life-saving. But one oncologist stresses you’ll want to be aware of common cancer symptoms, such as a lump, unexplained weight loss, ongoing fatigue or changes in bowel or bladder habits.

“Some cancers cause symptoms, while others don’t, especially in their earliest stages,” states Dr. Joshua G. Cohen, MD, FACOG, FACS, the medical director of the Gynecologic Cancer Program at City of Hope Orange County. “This is true for several types of gynecologic cancer, including ovarian cancer and early-stage cervical cancers. Pay attention to unusual changes in your body, and keep up with routine gynecologic exams and recommended cancer screenings.”

Dr. Cohen emphasizes that early screenings are more effective for catching cancer early than watching and waiting for symptoms to develop. Common cancer screenings include mammograms, cervical cancer screening, colorectal cancer screening or lung cancer screening for people at higher risk. But eligibility depends on age and risk factors, and not every cancer has a screening test.

“So, let your healthcare provider know about symptoms that are persistent, unexplained or simply don’t seem right,” he tells Parade. As an oncologist, Dr. Cohen stresses that there’s one symptom he tells people under 40 to never ignore. Here’s what to know.

The First Symptom an Oncologist Would Never Ignore in Someone Under 40

Dr. Cohen is begging people under 40 not to brush off unexplained bleeding, as it can be a symptom of several types of cancer.

“Cancer can cause bleeding in several ways,” he tells Parade. “A tumor may grow into nearby tissue or damage blood vessels, and some tumors develop fragile blood vessels that bleed easily.”

Dr. Cohen notes that where the bleeding occurs can be an important clue for oncologists. For instance, in colorectal cancer, blood appears in the stool. Black, tar-like stools can also be a sign of stomach or esophageal cancer, which can also cause a person to vomit blood.

“Colorectal cancer often shows up as blood in or on the stool or black, tar-like stools,” he says. “With bladder or kidney cancer, blood in the urine may appear pink, red or brown. In cervical or uterine cancer, you may notice abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially between periods, after sex or after menopause. Lung cancer can cause a person to start coughing up blood or blood-streaked mucus.”

Blood cancers, such as leukemia, can cause unexplained bleeding for different reasons. “They can reduce healthy platelets, the blood cells that help stop bleeding, leading to easy bruising, bleeding gums or frequent nosebleeds,” Dr. Cohen reports.

While routine screening saves lives—and you should attend any that you are eligible for—Dr. Cohen says that if you notice blood in the stool before age 45, you should get a colonoscopy rather than wait for the recommended age.

“Many cancers are first discovered because the patient notices that something just isn’t right,” he explains. “I encourage patients not to dismiss a symptom simply because they think they’re too young to have cancer. While cancer is less common in younger adults, it can occur at any age. Abnormal bleeding always deserves an explanation, and you should seek this out with your medical team.”

Is Unexplained Bleeding Always a Cancer Sign?

No, unexplained bleeding could ultimately have many causes, and not all of them are cancer. In fact, Dr. Cohen says cancer is not the most likely cause. Depending on where the bleeding occurs, it could be due to:

• Hemorrhoids
• Urinary tract infections
• Kidney stones
• Stomach ulcers
• Hormonal changes
• Fibroids
• Blood-thinning medications

That said, these causes of unexplained bleeding also warrant attention from a medical doctor. A good rule of thumb: “Persistent or unexplained bleeding should always be evaluated,” Dr. Cohen says.

What To Do if You Notice Unexplained Bleeding

While most cases of abnormal bleeding aren’t cancer, Dr. Cohen stresses it’s important to speak with your medical team. “Bleeding that is associated with symptoms such as pain, fatigue or unexplained weight loss are especially concerning,” he says. “Your doctor will review your symptoms, perform an examination and may order tests.”

The good news is that cancer treatment has come a long way, and the earlier you catch it, the better. “In cases of gynecologic cancer, earlier diagnosis often means more treatment options, and today’s treatments are more personalized than ever, with gynecologic oncologists carefully tailoring care to each patient,” Dr. Cohen points out. “Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy.”

At nearly 10 minutes long, “Bat Out of Hell” broke just about every rule for a hit rock song. Yet the Todd Rundgren-produced epic became the defining track of Meat Loaf’s career and helped launch one of music’s biggest-selling albums.

The song’s path to the studio was anything but straightforward.

Written by Jim Steinman, “Bat Out of Hell” combined theatrical storytelling, hard rock, and grandiose arrangements into a style unlike anything else on the radio. Many record labels rejected the project, unsure how to market its operatic scope. It wasn’t until Rundgren heard the material that the album finally found a champion.

Rundgren immediately understood Steinman’s vision.

“I knew who Meat Loaf was; I’d seen him in the Rocky Horror show on Broadway,” Rundgren told Billboard. “So I said ‘Okay, interesting enough, let’s listen to [the demo]’ — and the only way that they would demo the material was to do it live. They didn’t have a demo tape, or they didn’t want me to have a demo tape, because they thought that was not representative of what they were trying to do”

The producer agreed to work on the record and assembled many of the musicians who brought the songs to life, including members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. His energetic production embraced the album’s oversized sound rather than trying to scale it back, helping turn “Bat Out of Hell” into a cinematic rock spectacle.

“Meat Loaf was just plain weird. By the standards of the time, he was just a plain weird act,” Rundgren told Guitar World. “And every producer couldn’t figure out what to do with them because the songs were so long.”

Rundgren’s willingness to take a risk paid off in spectacular fashion.

Released in October 1977, Bat Out of Hell initially built momentum through relentless touring and word of mouth before becoming a worldwide phenomenon. The album has since sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history, while the title track became one of Meat Loaf’s signature performances and a staple of classic rock radio.

“One of the most mind-blowing moments in my life was watching Todd Rundgren play the guitar and do it in one take, and one take only,” Meat Loaf told Classic Rock Magazine in 2000 interview. “In 15 minutes he played the lead solo and then went back and did the harmony guitars at the beginning. The whole thing didn’t take him more than 45 minutes! Then Todd mixed the record in one night. He started at six o’clock and finished about four o’clock in the morning.”

The song’s influence has endured across generations.

Its thunderous guitars, dramatic vocals, and unforgettable storytelling have inspired countless artists, while its larger-than-life production helped redefine what a rock album could sound like. Decades later, “Bat Out of Hell” remains the song most closely associated with Meat Loaf’s remarkable career and with Steinman’s singular songwriting style.

Forty-nine years after its release, “Bat Out of Hell” continues to captivate listeners with the same theatrical energy that made it an instant classic. Guided by Todd Rundgren’s visionary production, the 1977 epic proved that taking creative risks can sometimes result in rock history.

The Big Brother live feeds have delivered another viral moment.

Big Brother 28 houseguest Mallory Aurichio (aka Pipe Queen) is getting attention for an elaborate—and increasingly chaotic—improvised New York City sightseeing tour that was captured on the show’s live feeds and shared on Instagram Thursday, August 13.

Seated in an office chair, Mallory welcomed her fellow houseguests to “Mallory’s bus tour” before promising stops in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. What began with some surprisingly legitimate Statue of Liberty trivia quickly went off the rails.

While “driving” through Brooklyn, Mallory suddenly instructed her passengers, “Everybody get down,” before acting out a shooting and warning them about broken glass. The imaginary excursion continued and included a bank robbery, a stop for chopped cheese, a hurricane that became a tornado, dangerously sharp turns, and a passenger seemingly becoming infected with something.

“Thank you guys so much for joining the tour,” she eventually announced, finally bringing the three-minute journey to an end.

Fans of the show online were cracking up over the clip.

“It’s honestly so refreshing to see adults play like this. Screens have really robbed us of a lot of joy in life,” one Instagram user wrote.

“Mallory slowly turning the house into an improv troupe,” another said.

A third replied, “sad they didn’t show it in the episode, prob to make sure she doesent beat an icon for afp….”

“i love whatever’s wrong with her,” the official Big Brother account wrote.

Kathy Young wasn’t waiting for the stars to align. Just shy of 15 and still in ninth grade, she approached Indigo Records’ Jim Lee after a taping of Wink Martindale’s local television dance show in Los Angeles and introduced herself.

A week later, she was auditioning.

“Frankie Avalon was the star that day,” Young said in an interview via Classic Bands. “I saw this gentleman walking around, talking to all the artists, but he wasn’t actually with someone. … I walked straight up to him and said, ‘How do you make a record if you don’t know anyone and you don’t have any connections?’”

That man was Lee, and that fateful chat in August 1960 set off a chain of events that led directly to Young recording and releasing “A Thousand Stars” weeks later.

A quintessential doo-wop ballad, the song featured Young’s soft and airy vocals backed by the polished sounds of The Innocents. By December, the track had climbed the Billboard Hot 100 all the way to the No. 3 spot, solidifying the 15-year-old as a bona fide star of her own and earning her the moniker the “Cinderella of Show Business.”

“Because I went from being a 14-year-old girl in the ninth grade in high school to overnight being a star on American Bandstand, I was Cinderella,” she said. “I went from one thing to another in a matter of weeks.”

Young traveled with Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, The Shirelles, Bo Diddley, Connie Francis, and so many more. Appearing on American Bandstand four times, she also received a Gold Record for “A Thousand Stars.”

But Young wasn’t the only artist to find something special in “A Thousand Stars.” The song had already traveled a long way before it found its way into the hands of a teenager in Los Angeles, and its journey was far from over.  

The track was first recorded by The Rivileers, a pioneering doo-wop group from New York, led by 18-year-old Eugene Pearson, who hoped his newly penned “A Thousand Stars” would be their big break. After recording a demo, Sol Rabinowitz, the future owner of Baton Records, heard it and believed in it so much that he invested his own money to get it recorded.

Released as a single in early 1954, the track was a gritty R&B street-corner ballad featuring Pearson’s soulful tenor, a heavy bassline, and professional jazz backing.

Though limited distribution kept The Rivileers’ original from becoming a national hit, “A Thousand Stars” became a regional success and major radio staple in major music hubs like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Not to mention, caught the ear of Lee and Young six years later, whose cover was immensely successful.

More than a decade later, “A Thousand Stars” found an entirely different audience.

Following covers from several musicians, from Billy Fury and Linda Scott to Arthur Alexander and The Daughters of Eve, who all saw success with their own versions of the romantic ballad, The Guess Who delivered their own take on the ballad.

Known for chart-topping hits “American Woman,” “These Eyes,” and “No Time,” The Guess Who gave the song a decidedly rock ’n’ roll afterlife when they worked it into a live medley at a show at the Mobile Municipal Auditorium in August 1971. After rocking through “American Woman,” they transitioned into a loose cover of “A Thousand Stars,” before wrapping up with “Come On” and again “American Woman.”

One of the most famous homages, the live rendition has since become a legendary piece of classic rock history. And it all began with a ninth-grader who had the nerve to chase a dream.
