A song about a young girl’s life in rural poverty became one of the most powerful stories ever told in country music. 

In 1970, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” by Loretta Lynn reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, transforming her personal memories into a timeless anthem that still resonates today.

From the very first lines, the song stood apart. It wasn’t fiction or fantasy, it was real. Lynn wrote about her childhood in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, growing up in a coal mining family during the Great Depression. 

The honesty in her lyrics helped the track connect with millions, making it not only a chart-topping hit but also one of the most important recordings in country music history.

Critics praised its authenticity, with Billboard highlighting its “true country flavor.” “Coal Miner’s Daughter” became Loretta Lynn’s signature song because it told her life story in simple, clear words. 

She wrote the song herself in 1969, blending melody and lyrics at the same time. The original version had nine verses, showing just how much she wanted to share.

Writing it wasn’t easy. Lynn once admitted, “I had to match up words like ‘holler’ and ‘daughter’ and ‘water.’ But after it was done, the rhymes weren't so important.”

The song paints vivid scenes: her father working in the coal mines and farming corn, her mother doing endless chores and the family living with very little. Yet, there is pride in every line.

Still, Lynn made it clear that the song only told part of her story. She revealed, “The song doesn’t tell half of it. If I told the whole story, nobody would believe it now anyway.”

That deeper story included not just poverty, but a life filled with both resilience and hardship. Born into a large family, Lynn grew up with limited resources, an experience that shaped the honest songwriting style that later defined her career.

The song was recorded on Oct. 1, 1969, at Bradley’s Barn in Tennessee under producer Owen Bradley. Before recording, Lynn had to shorten the track by removing several verses.

Despite the cuts, the final version kept its emotional core. Featuring steel guitar, fiddle and banjo, the track was recorded live with only a few takes. The result was a song that felt natural and real. It became Lynn’s fourth No. 1 country hit and one of 16 chart-toppers in her career. It also marked her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100, expanding her reach beyond country audiences.

“Coal Miner’s Daughter” eventually grew far beyond a single song. It inspired her bestselling 1976 autobiography and the 1980 film adaptation starring Sissy Spacek, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Lynn.

The song also earned lasting recognition. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, named one of the “Songs of the Century,” and preserved in the National Recording Registry. These honors cemented its place as one of the most important recordings in American music.

When Lynn passed away in 2022 at age 90, her legacy was already secure, not just as a country music icon, but as a storyteller who turned real life into art.

At 94 years old, legendary composer John Williams still holds one of the most talked-about records in Hollywood: the highest number of Oscar nominations without wins.

Williams, born on Feb. 8, 1932, has earned 54 Academy Award nominations, the most for any living person and second only to Walt Disney’s 59. Out of those, he has won five Oscars. That means he has 49 nominations that did not turn into wins. 

However, Williams’ record reflects a career filled with constant recognition. He has been nominated across seven straight decades, something no other composer has achieved.

Many of his nominations came during years when he was even competing against himself. That means multiple scores he created were nominated in the same category.

His five Oscar wins include:

• Fiddler on the Roof (1971) – Best Scoring
• Jaws (1975) – Best Original Score
• Star Wars (1977) – Best Original Score
• E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) – Best Original Score
• Schindler’s List (1993) – Best Original Score

His most recent win came in 1994 for Schindler’s List. Since then, he has gone more than 30 years without another Oscar victory. Still, he continued to earn nominations, about 23 more after that last win.

Williams began his career as a jazz pianist and studio musician before moving into film scoring in the 1950s and 1960s. His early work included television shows like Lost in Space and Gilligan’s Island.

His big break came in the 1970s through collaborations with directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. These partnerships helped shape modern cinema.

He went on to compose some of the most recognizable themes in movie history, including:

• Star Wars (main theme and “Imperial March”)
• Indiana Jones (“Raiders March”)
• Jurassic Park
• Harry Potter(“Hedwig’s Theme”)
• Superman
• Saving Private Ryan

Over seven decades, Williams has scored more than 100 films, making him one of the most prolific composers ever.

Beyond movies, he also served as the principal conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993 and continues to write music for concerts and orchestras.

Even in his 90s, Williams shows no signs of slowing down. As of 2026, he recently completed a score for a new Steven Spielberg project and is working on new concert pieces.

The documentary Music by John Williams was nominated for a Grammy in 2026 for Best Music Film. Across his career, he has earned 76 Grammy nominations and 27 wins, adding to his long list of achievements.

Despite not receiving a new Oscar nomination for the latest awards season, his record of 54 nominations remains untouched. Williams is still widely seen as the greatest living film composer.

Ella Langley and Morgan Wallenhave dropped their highly anticipated brand new duet “I Can’t Love You Anymore.”

Out today (Friday, April 24) via SAWGOD/Columbia Records, the tune follows Langley’s recently released and hugely successful 2026 studio album, Dandelion. 

Written by Langley alongside Austin Goodloe and Joybeth Taylor, and produced by Langley with Goodloe and Ben West, “I Can’t Love You Anymore” finds two of the hottest country music superstars taking a verse with the Alabama native setting the scene for the track in the opening lyrics. In the first verse, the “Be Her” singer paints a picture of missing a once romance, describing how an old lighter has brought her back to the memory of being with  that someone she used to love.  

Echoing Langley’s sentiments, Wallen channels the second verse. He reminisces on an old portrait of him with his former flame before recalling the aching moment of seeing his ex set fire to the photo that had been gathering dust.

Throughout the chorus, the pair showcase their superstar energy and undeniable musical chemistry, delivering harmony on lyrics that have them succumbing to the realization that they need to let go of what once was and move on from the failed relationship. 

The Song Was Teased in a Music Video

Before releasing “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” Langley offered up an easter egg to fans in her official music video for “Choosin’ Texas,” which featured a license plate that matched the initials of the duet title. The hidden message reading: "ICLYA" was later confirmed as an upcoming collaboration with Wallen. 

A Long Time Coming

"Ella and I have been talking about doing a song for a little while now,” Wallen shared in a press release. “We have been on tour together, and I’m a huge fan of what she does. She wrote and sent over this song, and from the beginning riff, it was hard to deny. I’m honored she wanted me to be the one to do it with her.” 

The epic collaboration follows Langley and Wallen’s recent live performance debut of the song, which took place during an Alabama stop on the East Tennessee native’s Still The Problem Tour.

In celebration of  “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” and as a nod to their respective home states, Langley and Wallen have taken their duet a step further, releasing a limited-edition T-shirt line. The apparel, which features a split licence plate design, can be found here.

Throughout his illustrious decades-long career, Alan Jackson has taken 35 songs to the top of the country charts. One of those tunes was a cover of a timeless classic called “It Must Be Love.” 

Released 26 years ago today, on April 24, 2000, Jackson made “It Must Be Love” his own. So much so that it would be easy to assume he was the first to cut it. 

However, that is not the case.  

A Don Williams Cover

20 years before he included the track on his Under the Influence album, in the summer of 1979, Don Williams released the song as the third single from his Expressions album. Williams’ original offering was a commercial success. His version of the song reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the fall of its release, giving him his ninth overall chart-topper.

Unlike Jackson’s version, Williams’ original take offers a breezy, almost beachy feel with lighter instruments and mellow vocals, while Jackson’s cover offers a heavier sound and tighter production, features that fit for a large arena. 

While Williams’ “It Must Be Love” was already an undeniable hit, Jackson revived it, sending it back to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in September of the same year of his release. Jackson’s take also made it into the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 37. 

The Meaning of the Song

Written by Bob McDill, “It Must Be Love” plays out as a simple love song, with the singer expressing his range of emotions that have him suggesting he must be in love with the person of his dreams. The chorus of the track includes stunning harmonies and a repetitive “It must be love” hook that makes it easy to sing along to. 

Jackson’s “It Must Be Love” cover served as the third and final single on his Under the Influence album. According to American Songwriter, the collection found Jackson paying tribute to several of his heroes. “It Must Be Love” followed singles, “The Blues Man” — a Hank Williams Jr. cover — and the Nat Stuckey-penned “Pop a Top.”

In 1977, Soviet filmmaker Larisa Shepitko directed a war drama that would go on to build one of the strongest worldwide reputations in cinema.

The Ascent has been ranked among Rotten Tomatoes' "300 Best Movies of All Time," reflecting how deeply the film has continued to resonate with critics and viewers alike, even decades after its release. Its lasting impact does not come from spectacle, but from its intense emotional and moral weight.

Set during World War II, the story follows two Soviets who leave their unit in search of food and find themselves in Nazi-occupied territory. As their situation worsens, the film shifts into something more psychological, forcing both men into decisions that test survival, loyalty and personal conviction.

The film's director, Shepitko, was known for her ability to blend physical reality with a spiritual dimension. The Ascent is widely considered her greatest work, and its composition is largely responsible for that.

She avoided the traditional war-movie pacing by building a slow, deliberate atmosphere. The snowy landscapes feel isolating and unforgiving, mirroring the characters' internal struggles and heightening tension without relying on action.

Film critic Wael Khairy describes it as "simply remarkable," explaining that "Its complex existential message transcends nationalism to investigate the human condition. ... It engages viewers, both intellectually and emotionally, by looking at the very essence of morality."

Many consider the film a cinematic masterpiece, and the honors it has received reflect this. It won the Golden Bear at the 1977 Berlin International Film Festival, alongside three other awards, and now holds a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rather than fading with time, The Ascent continues to stand out for its remarkable ability to instill deep emotion and reflection in viewers. Its outstanding reputation helps explain why it still appears on major "greatest films" lists today.

37 years ago today, on April 24, 1989, Tom Petty released his debut solo album, Full Moon Fever. By the time he had ventured into solo work for this particular collection, the Gainesville, Florida native had already experienced success throughout the ‘80s, charting with songs like “American Girl,” “Refugee,” “Don’t Do Me Like That” while backed by his longtime band, The Heartbreakers. 

Full Moon Fever found Petty stepping outside of his norm, working alongside producer and Traveling Wilburys member Jeff Lynne and The Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell for the majority of the album’s song lyrics. Notably, additional Traveling Wilbury members, Roy Orbison and George Harrison, lent their expertise to the project. Meanwhile, The Heartbreakers weren’t excluded from contributing to the record — in fact, they did add their instruments to the songs — all except for drummer, Stan Lynch, who didn’t participate on his own accord. 

Petty Revealed Why He Chose to Make a Solo Album

“I’ve always wanted the freedom to do something like that,” the late Petty once said of making the solo album, in an interview that has been shared on YouTube. “I have no intention of leaving The Heartbreakers. They might have had some intention of leaving me, but I had no intention of leaving ... .After 13 years, you kinda like to do other things and get other influences from different people.” 

Low-key was the overall take on making the album during the Full Moon Fever recording sessions, with tracking taking place inside Campbell’s built-in studio in his garage. Featuring 12 tracks, the project includes five singles. They are “Free Fallin',” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” “A Face in the Crowd,” and “Yer So Bad.” The first three of those five songs were hits, landing at No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and making it into the Top 40 on the BillboardHot 100 chart. 

The Album's Success

Following its debut, Full Moon Fever was a major commercial success, reaching the No. 3 spot on the Billboard 200. The 5X Platinum-certified collection went on to become a ‘Greatest’ Album of all Time, according to Rolling Stone’s 2020 top 500 list, where it ranked at No. 298, as well as a 100 best ‘Albums of the 1980s’ by the same publication. Additionally, Full Moon Fever was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. 

Full Moon Fever, which provided a turning point in Petty’s career, solidifying him as a rock icon, is the follow-up to his Heartbreakers 1987 platinum-certified album, Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough).

Fourty-four years ago today on April 24, 1982, a completely unplanned moment in music history made its way onto the charts. The Survivors, a live recording featuring Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, officially entered the country charts, capturing the magic of a night no one saw coming.

The recording came from a 1981 concert in Stuttgart, where Cash was already scheduled to perform. By coincidence, Lewis and Perkins were also touring in Germany at the time and ended up at the same venue. What happened next was pure spontaneity: the two legends joined Cash onstage for the second half of the show, turning a standard concert into an unforgettable collaboration.

A Night That Brought Rock and Country History Together

All three artists were pioneers of early rock and roll and rockabilly, each with deep ties to Sun Records. Seeing them share a stage again wasn’t just nostalgic—it was historic.

The country superstar, who is a self-proclaimed "lover of rock music" has a well-documented history of covering her favorite heavy metal and hard rock tracks. From Ozzy Osbourne to Axl Rose, Underwood has taken on hits by some of rock's biggest legends, and according to Rolling Stone, Underwood's take on a Joan Jett classic is one of her best hard rock covers ever.

In 2019, Underwood performed the 1988 classic from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, "I Hate Myself For Loving You," during her CMA Fest set at Nashville's Nissan Stadium.

Putting her own take on the angry rock anthem, Underwood surprised the crowd by bringing none other than Jett herself on stage. Together they finished performing "I Hate Myself For Loving You," before taking on more of the band's biggest hits, including "Bad Reputation," "Crimson and Clover" "Fresh Start" and "I Love Rock and Roll."

Rolling Stone includes Underwood's version of "I Hate Myself For Loving You" on its list of the country singer's "Best Hard Rock Covers," a roundup published in 2023. The performance is described by the outlet as having been "joyous enough to make even the most dark of Blackhearts swell."

The list also included more notable tracks that Underwood has rocked out to, such as Guns N Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine" and "Paradise City," plus "Alone" by Heart, "Home Sweet Home" by Mötley Crüe, "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams, Motörhead's "Ace of Spades," and Stevie Nicks' "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," among a few others.

It is a rare for an a quietly introspective novel to be as captivating and compelling as The Remains of the Day.

The bestselling work by Kazuo Ishiguro has been ranked among the best "books for a rainy day" on Goodreads, based on user lists that highlight stories perfect for slow, reflective reading. Its enduring appeal lies in its subtle emotional depth and contemplative tone.

Published in 1989, the novel follows Stevens, a devoted English butler who embarks on a road trip through the countryside while reflecting on his decades of service at a grand estate. As memories surface, Stevens begins to confront the choices he's made, particularly his unwavering loyalty to his employer and the personal sacrifices that came with it.

Set against the backdrop of post-war England, the story offers a look into a changing world where old social structures are beginning to fade. Ishiguro uses Stevens' journey to explore themes of duty, regret and missed opportunities, crafting a narrative that is as deeply personal as it is quietly profound.

Ishiguro completed his first draft of the novel in just four weeks, during which he set himself a rigid writing schedule: Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break and two-hour dinner break.

"I'd not see, let alone answer, any mail, and would not go near the phone," Ishiguro wrote for The Guardian. "No one would come to the house. Lorna, despite her own busy schedule, would for this period do my share of the cooking and housework. In this way, so we hoped, I’d not only complete more work quantitively, but reach a mental state in which my fictional world was more real to me than the actual one."

The novel was awarded the Booker Prize, further cementing its status as a modern classic.

It was later adapted into the acclaimed film of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. The film brought the novel's understated emotion to life, with both leads earning Academy Award nominations for their performances. Its careful pacing and attention to detail mirrored the tone of the book, making it a faithful and widely praised adaptation.

"I quite like the idea that something I've put out there has begun to permeate and grow in the culture," Ishiguro told Goodreads of his film adaptations. "That's a seriously flattering thing—to contribute in a little way to what's out there in the public imagination. Isn't that what we're creating stories to do, ultimately?"

Prince Harry made rare political comments during his visit to Ukraine, calling out “American leadership” days ahead of his father, King Charles III’s, US state visit. 

The Duke of Sussex, 41, made a surprise two-day trip to Ukraine’s capital city, arriving by train on April 23. He spoke at the Kyiv Security Forum, and without specifically naming President Donald Trump, he pointed to the United States to fulfill its “obligations” during the Russian-Ukrainian war, which started in February 2022. 

“The United States has a singular role in this story. Not only because of its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was part of the assurance that Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders would be respected,” Harry said, in part, while on stage. “This is a moment for American leadership. A moment for America to show that it can honor its international treaty obligations, not out of charity, but out of its own enduring role in global security and strategic stability.”

Harry, who currently resides in California with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, also pleaded to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the violence. 

“No nation benefits from the continued loss of life we are witnessing,” he said, directed at Putin. "Years into this war, with immense losses and limited gains, it is increasingly clear that this path offers no victory, only more loss.”

Harry acknowledged he is “not a politician” earlier in the speech, but visited Ukraine as a “soldier,” referencing his 10 years in the British Army, and a “humanitarian.”

Although Harry is not a working member of the British royal family anymore, it is still very rare for him to make political comments. His speech came days before his father, Charles, and his stepmother, Queen Camilla, are scheduled to come to the US for four days.

While Charles and Camilla’s visit is officially meant to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the timing also comes as tension rises between the two countries. Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer have publicly disagreed over immigration policies and the war in Iran. Despite some politicians in the UK calling for Charles to cancel his US visit, Trump expressed excitement about his majesty coming to the White House.

Trump said Charles’ visit could “absolutely” ease tensions between the UK and US during an interview with the BBC. 

“He's fantastic. He's a fantastic man,” Trump said about Charles. "I know him well, I've known him for years … He's a brave man, and he's a great man. They would absolutely be a positive."

Charles and Camilla will be in the United States from April 27 to April 30, and are expected to have an informal tea with Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, and attend a formal state dinner. Charles will become the second monarch to deliver an address to Congress during his visit after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did the same in 1991.
