Stephen King Ruled Horror Every Year of the '90s — Except One
The 1990s were a strange time to love horror. The genre's mass-market paperback boom had peaked, the bookstore shelves were crowded with legal thrillers andDanielle Steel romances, and yet horror kept climbing the Publishers Weekly annual fiction charts. Every single year it was on the shoulders of one man, with one very notable exception.
Here's the top horror fiction breakdown for each year of the '90s:
1990 — Four Past Midnight, Stephen King King opened the decade with this collection of four novellas, landing at No. 2 on the Publishers Weekly annual fiction bestseller list. The book (including 'The Langoliers' and 'Secret Window, Secret Garden') won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Collection that year and hit No. 1 on the New York Timesweekly fiction chart. Four novellas, one monster sales figure.
1991 — Needful Things, Stephen King Billed as the 'Last Castle Rock Story,' Needful Things came in at No. 3 on the Publishers Weekly annual fiction list. A new shop opens in King's fictional Maine town with a devilish proprietor offering irresistible bargains...at a cost. The novel later became a 1993 film. Castle Rock would never be the same, and King's grip on horror readers remained total.
1992 — Dolores Claiborne, Stephen King The only year in the decade that a horror novel sat atop the entire Publishers Weekly annual fiction chart. Dolores Claiborne was No. 1 overall, ahead of The Pelican Brief, ahead of everything. The psychological portrait of a Maine housekeeper accused of murder contained almost nothing supernatural, yet it was pure King, dark, relentless, and impossible to put down. Kathy Bates starred in the 1995 film adaptation.
1993 — Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Stephen King King's short story collection, 23 tales, each with an author's note, debuted at No. 5 on Publishers Weekly's annual fiction chart, ahead of Anne Rice's Lasher at No. 7. It spent 15 weeks on PW's weekly bestseller list.
1994 — Insomnia, Stephen KingThe Chamber by John Grisham went to No. 1 that year, but the top horror title was King's Insomnia at No. 5 on the Publishers Weekly annual fiction list, with Anne Rice's Taltosat No. 12. The 800-page novel follows an elderly widower plagued by sleeplessness and increasingly vivid hallucinations that grow impossible to distinguish from reality.
1995 — Rose Madder, Stephen King The Rainmaker pushed Grisham back to the top, but King placed Rose Madderat No. 7 on Publishers Weekly's annual fiction chart. The novel, about a woman who escapes an abusive husband and discovers a mysterious painting that takes on a life of its own, is one of King's more underrated titles of the decade.
1996 — Desperation, Stephen King In one of the most remarkable maneuvers in publishing history, King released two novels simultaneously in September 1996 under different names, Desperationas Stephen King and The Regulators as Richard Bachman. Both made the Publishers Weekly annual fiction chart: Desperation at No. 3, The Regulators at No. 5. Desperation, set in a Nevada mining town terrorized by a demonic sheriff, was the unambiguous horror entry.

1997 — Wizard and Glass, Stephen King King's only major release of 1997 was the fourth volume of The Dark Tower series, and it debuted as a No. 1 national bestseller. While the series blends fantasy, Western, and science fiction, Wizard and Glass contains substantial horror elements, including a Stand-style superflu apocalypse, and no other horror title came close to its commercial impact that year.
1998 — Bag of Bones, Stephen KingKing's first book with Scribner placed at No. 3 on the Publishers Weekly annual fiction list, behind Grisham and Tom Clancy. Bag of Bones, a ghost story about a grieving novelist who retreats to his Maine lake house, won King the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel and marked what many critics called a maturation in his writing. He had not lost his readers.
1999 — Hannibal, Thomas Harris The decade's lone exception to King's dominance. Thomas Harris's long-awaited sequel to The Silence of the Lambs ranked second on Publishers Weekly's 1999 annual fiction chart, second only to Grisham's The Testament, capitalizing on the character's cult following from the earlier novel and its film adaptation. The book moved millions of copies and Dr. Lecter devoured the competition. In nine of ten years, Stephen King was the best-selling horror author in America. Thomas Harris took the one that got away.
We Asked Real Estate Pros What Boomers Get Wrong About Buying a Retirement Home and They All Said the Same Thing
For many, retirement means downsizing and relocating to a new place. And while lots of people end up heading south to Florida to take advantage of all of the perks the state has to offer retirees—like year-round sunshine and favorable tax laws—there are those who opt to stay close to home or move somewhere that will put them closer to their family during their golden years.
However, it doesn't matter where you plan to move; there are a few mistakes retirees should avoid when shopping for their forever home. I spoke with a few real estate pros to find out what those are, and discovered that they all said the same thing...and it has to do with the type of house so many boomers favor when shopping for a new home. Keep reading to find out what they had to say.
Many Boomers Make the Same Mistake When Shopping for a Home in RetirementWhen Baby Boomers shop for a new home, Suzanne Vasbinder, Broker and Owner of Your Home Sold Guaranteed Realty-Vasbinder International, LLC, says that many of them fail to plan for the long-term. "One of the biggest mistakes that I have seen retirees make is not taking into consideration if they are planning to age in place or go to an assisted living facility when the time comes," she says, noting that this should influence the type of home you're purchasing. "The layout of the home is extremely important."
Anthony Askowitz, Broker at REMAX Advance Realty II echoes that sentiment, saying that you not only need to consider you and your partner's current mobility needs when shopping for a new home, but you should also plan for the future...whatever that may hold. "Multi-story properties can become a challenge in the future, especially if there is no bedroom and full bath on the main floor," he says, adding that you'll also need to look at the age of a home before purchasing it.

"Newer buildings will be ADA compliant, but others may not be," he says of the potential need of assistance devices like wheelchairs and walkers. Additionally, Askowitz says boomers often forget about the amenities they may need in the future as well, which includes things like in-unit washers and dryers and a community that will help you socialize once you're unable to get around as easily.
Real Estate Pros Say Boomers Buy Homes That Are Too BigWhile failing to prioritize one-floor living was definitely a common theme among the real estate pros I spoke with, the next biggest issue they see is failing to downsize enough up front. "I often see retirees buy bigger homes, expecting family members and friends to visit, but sometimes that doesn’t happen, and they end up with a bigger house than they need," Scott Swonger, a HomeSmart real estate agent, says. "Then they end up calling me a couple of years later and want to downsize."

Of course, the type of home you will need in retirement will vary depending on your specific situation. However, according to the real estate agents I spoke with, it's definitely important not to just consider what you want right now when shopping for your next home, but to make sure you're purchasing a place that will suit your needs long-term. If you do that, you may just be able to find your dream home for your golden years.
57 Years Ago Today, ’60s Legend Celebrated Historic Oscar Win in Rare Tie Moment
The Oscars have witnessed a slew of record-breaking wins, but 57 years ago, two Hollywood greats shared the spotlight in an unprecedented winning moment.
On April 14, 1969, Barbra Streisand achieved a career-defining milestone after winning her first Academy Award for Best Actress.
This was after the singer-actress delivered a stellar performance as Fanny Brice, the legendary comedian and radio personality who rose to fame as a star of Ziegfeld Follies.
During the 41st Academy Awards, Streisand took the stage after surpassing the equally talented nominees Patricia Neal in The Subject Was Roses, Vanessa Redgrave in Isadora and Joanne Woodward in Rachel, Rachel.
However, what was supposed to be a highlight in the music star’s acting career instead turned into a rare and historic moment after she tied with the legendary Katharine Hepburn, who starred in the film The Lion in Winter.

This celebration instantly became a landmark moment in Academy Awards history.
Presented by Ingrid Bergman, who appeared visibly surprised as she announced the winner, Streisand and The Lion in Winter director Anthony Harvey, who accepted on behalf of the actress, both took the stage to deliver their acceptance speech.
Harvey, who was the first to take the spotlight, delivered a short yet grateful message.
As for Streisand, who was wearing a daring and now-iconic sheer, glittery black pantsuit by designer Arnold Scaasi, she charmed the audience with her witty yet heartfelt speech.

“Hello, gorgeous,” she began her speech, adding, “And I'm very honored to be in such magnificent company as Katharine Hepburn. And gee whiz, it's kind of a wild feeling. Sitting there tonight, I was thinking that the first script of "Funny Girl" was written when I was only eleven years old, and thank God it took so long to get it right, you know.”
The then-newly crowned Best Actress mentioned the people who made Funny Girl possible, as well as the “Hollywood people” who made it into a movie.
She concluded her message with a hilarious remark, saying, “Wow. It's like, somebody once said to me, asked me if I was happy. And I said, "Are you kidding? I'd be miserable if I was happy." And I'd like to thank all the members of the Academy for making me really miserable. Thank you.”
Besides the Oscars, Streisand also won Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the 1969 Golden Globe Awards for her performance in Funny Girl.

Best-Selling Writer Releases First New Novel in 20 Years to Sweeping Critical Acclaim: 'It's Well Worth Taking the Plunge'
After 20 years away from the public spotlight, best-selling author Nancy Lemann is returning to the forefront of the literary community with her brilliant new novel, The Oyster Diaries.
Set in Lemann's native city of New Orleans, The Oyster Diaries follows a middle-aged woman named Delery who finds herself torn between the demands of her father and her adult daughters. Reflecting on her eventful past through various diary entries, Delery comes to terms with her delicate place in life, as well as the changing nature of her relationships to her fellow family members.
"The Oyster Diaries, the latest novel by the incomparable Nancy Lemann, is a funny and poignant portrayal of the vicissitudes of adulthood that sees the return, from her legendary debut, Lives of the Saints, of the heroic wastrel Claude Collier," The New York Review of Books said of Lemann's highly anticipated new novel.
"This is an exuberant, indignant, insightful performance, and an irresistible addition to the books that have made Lemann one of the keenest, most engaging, and simply beloved of American writers at work today," the publisher continued.
Of course, Lemann's latest novel marks the author's long-awaited return two decades after her previous novel. To this day, the celebrated novelist continues to earn renown for her earlier works, including her critically acclaimed debut book Lives of the Saints, which The New York Times went so far as to describe as "a dense, musically patterned novel" and "a finely etched picture of the South."
As with her past work, The Oyster Diaries has once again earned Lemann significant acclaim among readers and critics alike, as evidenced by the ample praise the book has received so far.
"[Lemann's] women are frank, sardonic, bookish, self-absorbed and neurotic; they stew in their own juices. They deliver jokey shoves that sometimes land like real ones," The New York Times wrote of Lemann's new book. "The author channels their discontent and delivers slashing little thunderstorms of meaning. . . . [Lemann will] put you in mind of writers such as Lorrie Moore, Lydia Davis, Mary Robison and Fran Lebowitz, the four horsewomen of the anarchapocalypse."
"Lemann takes readers back to the world of her 1985 cult classic Lives of the Saints with an easygoing and lovely . . . novel of late middle-age . . . the novel offers an indelible ode to the struggling but vital city [of New Orleans] . . . It’s well worth taking the plunge," echoedPublishers Weekly.
When Does ‘The Pitt’ Season Finale Come Out? How and Where to Watch
The "pulse-pounding" conclusion to Season 2 of The Pitt is finally here, and, frankly, we're not quite sure how they could possibly wrap everything up into a neat little bow in just under one more hour.
With Dr. Mohan, played by Supriya Ganesh, slated to depart the series after the season's end, her character's arc still feels incomplete, and Dr. Robby's (Noah Wyle) old friend Duke seems up in the air over whether he's going to treat his likely terminal diagnosis.
Plus, another mysterious death is set to plague the doctors in the final hour, adding a little more chaotic energy to wrap up their days.
Here’s everything you need to know about Season 2, Episode 15 of The Pitt.

What will happen in The Pitt Season 2, Episode 15 this week?As several of his colleagues come to recognize the mental health crisis Dr. Robby is spiraling into, it seems like more than one person will attempt to intervene before he heads out on his pre-planned motorcycle sabatical.
At the end of the last episode, he asked Nurse Dana (Katherine LaNasa) what she'd do if he never came back, leaving her stunned into silence—and leaving the audience to wonder if he's looking to quit just his job, or life altogether.
In the preview for the finale, Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball) likens him to many of the other addicts he met in rehab, telling Robby, "The only difference is, they've accepted that they need help."
Later, Robby breaks down in front of Dr. Abbott (Shawn Hatosy), telling him that he's done the most important things in his life right there in the hospital. "But it is killing me," he admits.
While the show has always been impressively accurate when it comes to the medicine, it looks like it's getting even more real with the impact of the job on healthcare workers' well-being.
What is The Pitt Season 2 release schedule?Unfortunately for fans, this is the final episode of Season 2, so there won't be any more new episodes until Season 3 drops sometime next year.
This Fan-Favorite Actor Just Joined 'Dexter: Resurrection' as a Chilling New Villain
A terrifying new villain is headed to Dexter: Resurrection and he’s bringing chaos with him.
Dan Stevens has officially joined the hit series for its second season in a series regular role, taking on the part of the ominous "Five Borough Killer." The character is described as a Zodiac-style murderer who taunts police with chilling phone calls, threatening the lives of innocent people—and then following through, leaving a city in fear.
The casting marks a major addition to the show’s expanding lineup of high-profile stars. It was recently announced that Brian Cox will appear as the "New York Ripper," a serial killer who terrorized the city years earlier, while Uma Thurman is set to reprise her role as Charley, the former Special Ops officer who fled New York last season.
At the center of it all is Michael C. Hall, who returns as Dexter Morgan in the continuation of the long-running franchise. The series comes from Emmy-nominated showrunner Clyde Phillips and continues to build on the dark, psychological storytelling that made Dexter a fan favorite.
Season 1 of Dexter: Resurrection is currently available to stream on Paramount+, with the upcoming season expected to raise the stakes even higher as multiple killers collide.
Stevens, known for roles in Beauty and the Beast, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and the indie thriller Cuckoo, continues to expand his range with darker material. He’s also set to lead the upcoming horror anthology series The Terror: Devil in Silver and will reunite with director Adam Wingard for the film Onslaught.
With multiple serial killers entering the picture, Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection is shaping up to be one of the series' most intense chapters yet.

1989 Hit Film That Defined Romance for a Generation Turns 37 Years Old Today
The beloved 1989 teen romance film Say Anything, starring John Cusack and Ione Skye, was released into the world on this day 37 years ago. That day marked the official end to boring romantic gestures for a generation. Young love could never again be expressed with a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates. Get those out of here! Get out your boombox and your Peter Gabriel song or go home.
The movie Say Anything, written and directed by Cameron Crowe, focuses on an opposites-attract romance between two Seattle teens—charming slacker Lloyd Dobler (Cusack) and valedictorian Diane Court (Skye). Despite the fact that Diane's wrestling with being an overachieving people-pleaser and Dobler's life goal comes down to: "I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career," the two mismatched teens fall in love.

The film is not your average meet-cute movie either. The endearing script is remembered for its honest, witty banter, and compared to other teen romance films, for its smarter emotional complexity. The movie digs into some real-life, coming-of-age questions and struggles with self and family, and it's not dumbed down as silly teen angst.
In the movie's most iconic scene, Lloyd redefines modern chivalry for a generation. After Diane's father convinces her that Lloyd has inevitable low-life status, LLoyd comes fighting back. He pulls up in his Chevy Malibu outside Diane's bedroom window and holds a boombox up over his head that's bellowing Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." A new, better kind of romance was unlocked!
Here's the iconic Say Anything boombox serenade:
Say Anything was released on April 14, 1989, and its sweet, earnest depiction of first love and that boombox scene have stood the test of time. And so has Lloyd's unforgettably sad line: "I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen."
Ione Skye writes about her perspective and memories making this film in her memoir Say Everything.
1980 Hit Film Named 'Greatest Movie of All Time' Is a Sequel
What's your favorite Star Wars movie out of the bunch?
It may be hard to nail down, given that three trilogies have been released over the decades, along with spinoff and prequel films.
Or maybe it's an easy answer for lots of fans out there, going back to the original sci-fiaction movies that launched in the 1970s and into the '80s.
Die-hards may always have a soft spot for the original — AKA Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977). It was this groundbreaking space opera by George Lucas that launched the billion-dollar franchise, after all. It's no wonder that the American Film Institute, meanwhile, lists Star Wars: A New Hope at No. 15 on its list of 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time.
But what about the follow-up? There's a funny little moment in Scream 2 (1997) where Timothy Olyphant's character preaches to Jamie Kennedy's Randy that The Empire Strikes Back (1980) is superior to A New Hope due to the special effects and more.
Years later, the film-centric publication Empire Magazine ranked the "galaxy far, far away" sequel as the "greatest movie of all time" based on a 2014 fan poll, HuffPost reported at the time. Yes, The Empire Strikes Back even beat out The Godfather, which came in at No. 2 on the headline-making list.
Here's the rest of the top 10:
- The Empire Strikes Back
- The Godfather
- The Dark Knight
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Pulp Fiction
- Star Wars: A New Hope
- The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
- Jaws
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Inception
As the movie nears 46 years since its May 21, 1980 release, The Empire Strikes Back also ranks on Rotten Tomatoes' list of 300 Best Movies of All Time. The critically acclaimed sequel brings back Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) as they face attack by the Imperial forces and its AT-AT walkers on the ice planet Hoth. While Han and Leia escape in the Millennium Falcon, Luke travels to planet Dagobah in search of Yoda's help to face Darth Vader.
Pennsylvania Steals Southern Crown for the Best College Town In the U.S.
Every year, USA TODAY releases its 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, and the results tend to follow a familiar script. Southern charm dominates. Think tailgates, porch-lined streets, and towns where college football feels like a civic religion.
State College, Pennsylvania, home to Pennsylvania State University, claimed the No. 1 spot for Best Small College Town, edging out perennial Southern favorites like Florence, Alabama, and Oxford, Mississippi. The shift is subtle on paper, but it says something bigger about how people are choosing where to travel now. Because the truth is, the best college towns are no longer just about the college.
Don't miss a beat—subscribe now for trending travel updates and destination guides.
Why State College, Pennsylvania, Feels Like More Than a CampusOn a map, State College, Pennsylvania, is exactly what you would expect. A university town tucked into central Pennsylvania, surrounded by mountains and farmland. But spend a day there, and it starts to feel like something else entirely. As Mayor Ezra Nanes put it when the ranking was announced, “This is a vibrant, welcoming, and truly special place.”
Downtown is compact but surprisingly layered. There are long-standing bookstores and coffee shops filled with students, sure, but also art spaces, live music venues, and restaurants that feel designed for repeat visits, not one-time crowds. It’s a place where you can arrive without an agenda and still feel like you’ve done something with your day.
That accessibility is a big reason it resonated with voters. According to USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, winners are selected based on both expert nominations and public voting, which means this wasn’t just a technical win. It reflects what travelers actually enjoy experiencing.

The Southern Towns That Defined the CategoryFor years, places like Florence, Alabama, set the tone for what a great college town looked like. Florence, near the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, built its reputation on music. The town feels like a living archive of American sound, where live performances are part of the daily landscape rather than a scheduled event. It’s immersive in a way that sticks with you.
Then there’s Oxford, Mississippi, home to the University of Mississippi. Oxford leans into literature and food. It’s a place where writers like William Faulkner shaped the cultural identity, and where the dining scene feels as much a part of the experience as the campus itself.
What Today’s Travelers Are Really Looking ForThis sudden shift is because the modern traveler is looking for something slightly different and less about tradition, you have to understand, and more about the atmosphere you can immediately enjoy.
Other top-ranked towns reflect that change. Burlington, Vermont, pairs college energy with lakefront views and a strong local food scene. Charlottesville, Virginia, blends history with vineyards and access to the mountains. Even Blacksburg, Virginia, offers a mix of outdoor adventure and a tightly knit downtown.
The Secret Advantage of College Town TravelCollege towns are built for people who don’t yet know their way around. Menus are approachable but creative. Streets are navigable. Events are constant and usually affordable. And there’s an underlying energy that doesn’t depend on you being part of the student body.
I’ve found that they’re some of the easiest trips to recommend because they remove friction. You don’t need a packed itinerary. You don’t need reservations weeks in advance. You just show up and follow the noise. Even outside of football season, there’s always something happening. A concert, a lecture, a festival, or just a crowded patio on a random Thursday night.
Why This Win Signals a Bigger Travel TrendState College taking the top spot isn’t about Pennsylvania outperforming the South. It’s about a shift in what “best” actually means. We’re gravitating toward places that feel lived in rather than staged. Places where the culture exists whether or not visitors are there to see it.

College towns fit that perfectly. They are constantly evolving but never trying too hard. And when one rises to the top of a national ranking, it usually means it has figured out how to balance identity with openness.

Why Travelers Should Try ItFor travelers, phone-free dining offers something rare: a chance to be fully present in a new place. Without the distraction of notifications or social media, meals become more memorable and often more meaningful.
It’s also a refreshing break from documenting every moment. Not every experience needs to be posted to be meaningful.
Tips for Enjoying a Phone-Free ExperienceIf you’re planning to visit one of these spots, a little preparation goes a long way:
- Plan logistics ahead of time: Have directions, reservations, and contacts ready before you arrive
- Bring a watch or note key info: You won’t be checking your phone for the time
- Embrace the moment: Lean into conversation, observation, and the experience itself
- Let others know: If someone needs to reach you, give them a heads-up
Phone-free restaurants may still feel like a novelty, but they’re quickly becoming part of a broader shift in how people want to travel and dine.
In a world that’s always connected, these spaces offer something increasingly valuable: the chance to disconnect, and that might just be the most memorable travel experience of all.

When warm weather arrives, the backyard immediately takes on a second life. It becomes less of a backdrop you admire out the window and more of a lived-in extension of the house — part dining room, part hangout spot, part family-and-fur-friendly zone. And in between the group gatherings and louder moments, there’s always room to carve out a space that feels a little more like your own.
That’s where Walmart’s Zimtown Hanging Cotton Canvas Hammock Swing Chair comes in. At just $16 — down 64% from its original $45 price tag — it’s an easy way to turn any porch, patio, or overlooked corner of the yard into a dedicated spot where you can slow down. It doesn’t take up much space, but it can immediately shift the vibe of any outdoor area. Whether it becomes your morning coffee perch or your end-of-day reset seat, it’s a simple upgrade that makes the outside feel like the best “room” in your house.
Zimtown Hanging Cotton Canvas Hammock Swing Chair, $16 (was $45) at Walmart Shop at WalmartBuilt for all-day, all-season lounging, the chair is made of a soft yet sturdy cotton-polyester canvas-blend fabric designed to balance comfort with durability. The oversized seat — measuring roughly 37.4 inches wide — gives you plenty of room to stretch out and fully relax, unlike smaller hanging chairs that keep you sitting upright. It can support up to 250 pounds and is designed to resist tearing or fraying over time, offering a secure, dependable spot for adults, kids, and even pets. Two included pillows add an extra layer of comfort, while the hanging rope, hook, and carry bag make it easy to transport and set up your “cocoon” wherever you want it.
Installation is just as flexible as the chair itself, thanks to its lightweight, portable design, weighing about 70.5 ounces. It can be hung from a sturdy porch beam, balcony ceiling, backyard tree branch, or even an indoor ceiling joist, as long as the anchor point can safely support the weight capacity. The included hardware keeps setup straightforward, so you can move it seasonally or shift it from indoors to outdoors without much effort. Once in place, the suspended design allows for a gentle rocking motion, turning almost any corner into an instant relaxation zone.

Best-Selling Author’s Novel Fueled by Radiohead Ranked No. 1 ‘Best Plot Twist’ of All Time
The only rule about Goodreads is that we simply must tell you about the reads topping the lists at Goodreads. And this time, we’re talking plot twists. The “Best Plot Twist” of all time, to be exact.
On Goodreads, the list features readers’ “favorite, most shocking plot twists,” with solid entries including Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper, and Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. But at the top? Chuck Palahniuk’s visionary Fight Club.
About a nameless, hapless insomniac who meets a dude with a six-pack then starts an underground fight club as a sort of radical psychotherapy, the novel is a twisted 218 pages that culminates in one of the most shocking twists to fit between two covers. It even shocked its maker.
“To outline seems to weaken my motivation to write,” Palahniuk told The Strand Magazine. “To know where the plot will end bleeds away any desire to execute the story, but I’ll plot as far as the end of the second act. If I can get the ball rolling, then I can stay excited because the natural momentum of the events will lead the story to outcomes greater than I could ever have anticipated. In Fight Club … the eventual reveal dazzled me.”
According to Goodreads, the narrative is the result of “stolen moments under truck chassis and on park benches” listening to Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiraland Radiohead’s Pablo Honey. Which makes a lot of sense if you’ve read any part of the New York Timesbest seller’sdebut 1996 novel.
In 1999, the book was adapted for the big screen by gritty thriller maestro David Fincher. Starring Edward Norton as the sleep-deprived everyman and Brad Pitt as the mysterious Tyler Durden, the thriller was a disappointment at the box office, grossing merely $37 million in the U.S. against a $65 million budget.
Over time, however, the dark satire of consumer culture and control has become a massive hit, partly due to its DVD release, selling 13 million copies and developing a cult following. P.S. Real-life plot twist: Fight Club is hitting theaters again on April 22 this year. Tickets are available now.

The Property Brothers Name the Kitchen Appliance You Should Remove From Your Home
The Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathon Scott, have spent decades building and remodeling homes. Lately, they have been trying to make more eco-friendly decisions while they work. That is why they have been vocal about one kitchen appliance that they don’t believe anyone needs in their home—a gas stove.
The brothers prefer induction ranges over gas. Some fans assumed this was because they wanted to keep the homes looking and feeling modern, but the decision is also about safety in the kitchen.
"We de-carbonized by getting rid of the old gas range that we had and put in this beautiful induction range," Drew explained during a tour of his eco home transformation. “I love this because it cooks a pot of water in half the time that it did with the gas range.”

Drew went on to explain that an induction range was also safer with kids in the house. “Even if this is heated up, I’m not going to burn my hand when I put my hand on here because you need the pot. Induction needs the metal to actually bring the heat.” He also spoke about the air quality in his home, admitting that it “is already so much better because we're not running a gas range."
Jonathan also spoke about the topic withBloomberg. "Decarbonizing the home is critical because of the human health element," he said. "40% of our energy-related greenhouse gases come from buildings. The future of the home, in my mind, it's much cleaner and much safer."
Although Jonathan admitted that induction ranges typically cost more money than traditional gas ranges, he still believes they're worth the price in the long run. “It’s been so expensive," he said. "But now the price points have come down a lot. The government has rebates and tax incentives that offset cost. In some situations, it actually makes it cheaper than going back to a gas option."
Drew is a real estate expert and his twin brother, Jonathan, is a licensed contractor. Together, the pair helped families find houses and transform them into their dream homes on Property Brothers. The original series ran from 2011-2019, but there are multiple spinoffs, including Property Brothers: Under Pressure, which is now airing on HGTV on Sundays.
4 Birth Dates That Would Rather Be Single Than Settle
Love is a beautiful thing. However, if it comes at the expense of self-love, how harmonious can it truly be? Relationships require sacrifice and effort at times; however, there's a difference between compromise and neglecting your own needs. According to expert numerologists and astrologers, four birth dates stand out as the most self-sufficient, individuals who carry a strong sense of self-respect. These individuals would rather remain single than settle for a relationship that disregards their needs, often finding greater life satisfaction than those who enter relationships solely out of the fear of being alone.
Which Birth Dates Would Rather Be Single Than Settle?Check for your birth date. Disregard birth months.
Born on the 7th — The Selective SoulPeople born on the 7th of any month tend to be selective. Ruled by Neptune, the planet of spiritual compassion, they maintain heightened empathy without neglecting themselves. As they mature, they learn to trust their intuition all the more. Many people may overlook the emotional or spiritual signs of dysfunction that these individuals bravely confront. With their introspective wisdom, they feel comfortable focusing on building a life that aligns with their values and feels divinely right, even if it means going it alone.

Born on the 10th — The Standard-SetterThose born on the 10th, illuminated by the Sun, are confident leaders and pioneers who understand that life is what you make of it. They often carry radiant personalities, making it easy for them to attract friends, family, and lovers to build a supportive community. However, in matters of romance, their standards are higher; they refuse to compromise on what is essential to them. Instead of settling for less, they prefer to wait for the right person to come along, ensuring that they prioritize their own values and desires.

Born on the 17th — The One With IntegrityHave you ever met someone born on the 17th? Guided by Saturn, the planet of structured resilience, these individuals walk with integrity. From a young age, they instinctively understand the importance of taking responsibility and agency. They create a life on their own terms. Therefore, it only makes sense that they'd be unwilling to compromise their hard work for the wrong person. Their greatest fear is losing control of their life trajectory. As a result, they're often content to remain single until someone who shares their level of commitment and level-headedness comes into the picture.

Born on the 18th— The Whole PersonPeople often view their soulmate as someone who completes them, representing their missing half. While this romantic notion may seem charming at first, it is unsettling to believe that we are incomplete without another person. Those born on the 18th are strong-willed individuals who reject the idea that they need someone else to be whole. Ruled by Mars, they recognize their value as leaders. Rather than waiting for others' permission, they take the initiative to pursue their desires. While they enjoy passion and romance, they also hold themselves in high regard. They won’t settle for someone who diminishes their brightness; instead, they will wait until they find someone who appreciates their bold confidence.

Daniel Radcliffe Ranks the 'Harry Potter' Movies and His Surprising No. 1 Pick
When being the lead of a major movie franchise that has spanned multiple years, there are inarguably some favorite installments that rank higher than others. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe ranked the movie franchise and was surprised to learn which film was his favorite.
The actor spoke with Josh Horowitz for his Broadway production "Every Brilliant Thing" for a sit-down interview and was tasked with ranking all eight films. Parameters for the choosing were relatively simple, with the actor making his choices based on his own experience and the overall film. The ranking started with a process of elimination in chronological order.
Radcliffe was first asked to choose betweenHarry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, to which the actor chose the latter, having a fondness for the basilisk. Between Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the actor knew many fans preferred the third movie installment. For Radcliffe, it's the opposite.
"That's actually tough," he said. "I know everyone wants me to say Azkaban. I know that's how everyone else feels, but I love the stuff I got to do on the fourth movie. It was awesome. I'll take Goblet of Fire."
When it came down to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix versus Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Radcliffe wasn't shy to admit that the sixth movie installment was not his favorite of the franchise. He even said it's "probably the bottom of the bracket for me." The actor then admitted Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2 was his favorite of the last two franchise installments.

In the end, between Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hollows Part 2, the final Harry Potter movie installment took home the win.
"Wow! I'm fascinated. I wouldn't have said if not... Yeah, interesting. I don't think I knew Goblet of Fire would have been my second favorite film. Although it would have survived if the bracket were different. It would have gone a different way, " he said.

‘Brady Bunch’ Star Barry Williams Calls Infamous '70s Spinoff ‘A Circus’ — Says It Was ‘Ahead of Its Time’
Barry Williams had some strong feelings about The Brady Bunch Variety Hour. Produced by late TV legends Sid and Marty Krofft, the variety show aired from November 1976 to May 1977 on ABC, and it featured singing, dancing, water follies (!!!), and celebrity guests such as Milton Berle, Tina Turner, and Vincent Price.
The spinoff show was served up Brady style, with cast members Williams, Florence Henderson, Maureen McCormick, Christopher Knight, Mike Lookinland, Susan Olsen, and Ann B. Davis, reprising their Brady Bunch characters under the far-fetched premise that they ditched their suburban home life to become variety show stars. (Newcomer Geri Reischl filled in for Eve Plumb, who opted to skip the TV reunion).
In 2002, TV Guide ranked The Brady Bunch hour as the fourth-worst show in television history, per Remind magazine.

Barry Williams changed his tune on ‘The Brady Bunch Hour’In his book Growing up Brady, Williams wrote, "The Brady Bunch Hour was incredibly bad,” and he went on to call it “a mess” and a “turkey.” "The Brady Bunch Hour was perhaps the single worst television program in the history of the medium,” the actor wrote.
Pitched as a show that could follow in the footsteps of the Kroffs’ highly successful Donny and Marie show, Williams admitted he bought the idea “hook, line, and sinker.” Unfortunately, The Brady Bunch Hour was rushed into production and was a ratings flop.
Over time, Williams embraced the show for what it was: a showcase for the wacky magic of Sid and Mary Krofft, the masterminds behind the popular ‘70s Saturday morning shows H.R. Pufnstuf, The Bugaloos, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost, and more.
“I know our variety show gets criticized pretty heavily, but it’s a style of show from Sid and Marty Krofft,” Williams told Yahoo! Entertainment in 2022. “It was a circus — and I thought it was a great circus! I love it that it was kooky and crazy, and that the colors and the costumes were just so over-the-top. It's what Sid & Marty Krofft do. And I think in some ways they're even more popular now than they were. It's kind of ahead of its time.”

Barry Williams maintained a friendship with the KrofftsWilliams and the rest of The Brady Bunch child actors had a bit of a history with TV producing duo Sid and Marty Krofft. In 1972, the sitcom stars introduced the Kroffts’ Saturday morning TV lineup in the preview special The Brady Bunch Meets ABC’s Saturday Superstars. The following year, they made cameos in the TV special The World of Sid and Marty Krofft at the Super Bowl.
And while The Brady Bunch Hour only lasted nine episodes, Williams remained friendly with the famous brothers.
In March 2026, he paid a visit to see Sid Krofft just a few weeks before his death at age 96. In a photo posted to Instagram, Williams held an Easter bunny balloon as he posed alongside the television legend and fellow former child actor Mancow Muller after Krofft spent time in the hospital.
“Thank you for my first visit since getting out of prison!!” Krofft joked in the caption to the photo. “This morning I got to spend some VERY special time with my friends @thebarrywilliams and @mancowmuller. I just love absolutely every one of you! Thanks for sticking around with this crazy guy!”
Sid Krofft died on April 10, 2025, nearly two years after his brother passed away.
OpenAI's Sam Altman Shares Rare Photo of His Son in the Wake of a Recent Attack
Sam Altman is known for many things, most notably as the tech entrepreneur behind OpenAI. So if you’ve ever used ChatGPT, you sort of already know him. And while he’s the public face of artificial intelligence, the 40-year-old is also a husband and a devoted father.
What happened to OpenAI’s Sam Altman recently?Altman recently made headlines after a terrifying attack was made on his life. According to reports, Daniel Moreno-Gama from Texas allegedly threw an incendiary device (a lit Molotov cocktail) at Altman’s home last Friday. The 20-year-old is also accused of attempting to throw a chair through the glass door of OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters.
Of the attack, Acting Attorney General Todd Blache said, in a press release from the Department of Justice, “Violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement, be it with politics or a technology or any other matter.”
Who is Sam Altman’s child? While Altman is typically a private person, the CEO did make a very public statement after the attack. Altman rarely shares public pictures of his family—especially his infant son. The tech guru and husband, Oliver Mulherin, welcomed the baby boy (via surrogacy) in 2025. But you won’t find sweet snapshots of this kiddo splashed across Instagram.
Of course, that’s not to say Altman completely shied away from social media. Like any new parent, he eagerly announced his baby news. The proud dad did post to X immediately after the birth, sharing a cropped photo of the newborn’s head and the statement, “Welcome to the world, little guy! He came early and is going to be in the nicu for awhile. He is doing well and it’s really nice to be in a little bubble taking care of him. I have never felt such love.”

After the recent attack, Altman took to his blog (yes, he has a blog), posting an absolutely adorable photo of his son and Mulherin, writing, “Here is a photo of my family, I love them more than anything.”
So why did the CEO suddenly share this rare image? Altman explained, “Images have power, I hope. Normally we try to be pretty private, but in this case I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think of me.”
He goes on to add that, fortunately, no one was hurt in the attack, and he addresses some of his beliefs regarding AI. Altman also reflects on his work at OpenAI, his triumphs, and his mistakes before ending his blog post with, “We should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figurativley and literally.”
