Delta Just Announced 3 Game-Changing Upgrades for Coach Passengers
If you’ve ever flown 10 hours overseas, you know that specific kind of "Long-Haul Lottery." You spend weeks hoping you’ll board one of the newer planes with the good screens and plush seats, only to walk down the jet bridge and find a vintage bird with a seat cushion that feels like a park bench and a headphone jack that requires a dongle you definitely left at home.
That gamble is finally coming to an end.
Delta just announced a massive, $1 billion "nose-to-tail" fleet transformation. Instead of just focusing on the fancy suites at the front, they are bringing "bespoke" design and practical comforts all the way to the back. It’s a move that focuses on the physical reality of being a person in a middle seat for half a day. As Mauricio Parise, Delta’s VP of Brand Experience, put it: “The experience should feel familiar—creating a sense of home and comfort when you’re away.”
Here are the three upgrades that are going to make your next trip feel a lot more human.

Memory Foam in Every RowIn a win for anyone who has ever tried to find a comfortable sleeping position at 30,000 feet, Delta is ditching the standard, stiff airline padding. Starting with their brand-new aircraft and rolling out to their existing fleet, every single seat is getting a memory foam cushion. It’s a huge relief for your back, designed to stay comfortable through those middle-of-the-night hours when you're just trying to get a few hours of shut-eye.

2. Bluetooth for EveryoneWe can finally say goodbye to the "headphone scramble." Delta is making 4K QLED screens with Bluetooth connectivity the new standard. This means you can finally use your own noise-canceling headphones without digging for an adapter or settling for those scratchy, one-size-fits-all earbuds. Whether you’re catching up on a movie or just trying to drown out the engine noise with a podcast, you can finally stay wireless.
3. The End of the "Clutter" CabinWe’ve all dealt with that cramped feeling where there’s nowhere to put your phone or glasses without them disappearing into the seat pocket abyss. The new cabin design includes a dedicated seatback shelf in Delta Comfort and the Main Cabin to keep your personal items within reach. Plus, they’re adding an always-open, self-serve snack station for the long-haul routes. While it’s starting in the front, the goal of this $1B refresh is to make sure everyone has a little more control over their own space and their own schedule.
Bottom LineThis billion-dollar investment feels like a major shift in how airlines think about us. It’s moving away from the "transactional" feeling of travel and back toward something that feels a bit more like hospitality. From the "candlelit" mood lighting that helps you transition through time zones to those tactile seat controls, Delta is betting that if they make the cabin feel more like home, we might actually enjoy the journey.
By refreshing 800 planes over the next five years, they’re basically guaranteeing that you won't have to cross your fingers for the "good plane" anymore.

Target’s 'Resort-Like' $160 Chaise Lounge Chair Brings Vacation Vibes Straight to Your Patio
Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
A five-star vacation might not be on the calendar (or in budget) right now, but that doesn’t mean your backyard can’t step in and step up. There are plenty of ways to bring the luxury vibes home — string lights for a soft glow, a patio table setup for outdoor dinners, maybe even a few potted plants to make the space feel lush and lived-in. But if you’re really chasing that poolside, resort energy, it usually comes down to one thing: Having a dedicated spot where you can actually stretch out and relax.
That’s where the Costway Outdoor Chaise Lounge Chair comes in. At $160, marked down 47% from its original $300 at Target, it delivers that laid-back, hotel-pool energy without the travel plans, luggage, or bank-breaking stress. Just set it out in the sun, lean back, and you may even find yourself thinking about putting up that “out of office” status message.
Costway Outdoor Chaise Lounge Chair, $160 (was $300) at Target Shop at TargetThis sleek-looking lounge chair is designed to make outdoor relaxing feel easy, customizable, and genuinely comfortable, no matter how you like to unwind. The seven-level adjustable backrest gives you a lot of flexibility — fully flat when you want to stretch out and sunbathe, slightly reclined for lounging with a drink, or more upright when you’re reading, chatting, eating, or watching the kids play.
Built with hand-woven polyethylene (PE) rattan over a reinforced metal frame, the chair is made for outdoor use while keeping its structure and look over time. The PE wicker is fade-resistant and sun-protective, so it holds up well through repeated exposure to the elements. It also has a naturally breathable feel if you choose to use it without the cushion on hot days. Underneath, the sturdy frame can support up to 400 pounds, and adjustable foot pads help stabilize the chair on uneven surfaces like patios, decks, or garden stone, so it stays steady wherever you place it.
For comfort, it includes a thick, high-density sponge cushion that adds a soft, supportive layer across the lounging surface. The cushion is secured with buckles, so it stays in place even as you shift positions. A removable, machine-washable cover makes cleaning straightforward. There’s also an under-seat storage compartment built in, which is a useful detail for keeping essentials like a book, phone, or sunglasses within easy reach.
Shoppers have made it clear in the reviews section that this “resort-like” lounge chair is of “great value for the price.” One shopper wrote, “The frame feels sturdy, and the adjustable backrest makes it easy to switch from sitting up with a book to fully lying down for sunbathing.” That same reviewer added that the “cushions are thick enough to be comfortable for hours” of relaxation, and that the fabric “handles sun and light rain well without fading.”

Starbucks Is Rolling Out 2 New Summer Drinkware Collections, Including a Miffy Collab
Starbucks is counting down the days until summer and the debut of its new seasonal merch.
The international coffee giant's mango-centric spring menu may have only become available last week, but Starbucks is already teasing fans with new drinks, a returning cake pop and so much more—including not one, but two summer-inspired drinkware drops.
The first, dubbed the Road Trip Collection: Let's Take a Trip, is "inspired by summer adventure," according to the brand and it will feature staples like mugs and tumblers, as well as some more trendy and seasonally appropriate accessories. Starbucks is also launching a new collaboration with the global icon, the adorable cartoon bunny Miffy (the star of a series of beloved picture books written and illustrated by Dutch artist Dick Bruna), which includes additional drinkware and lifestyle merchandise.
Starbucks Unveils Its New Road Trip Drinkware Collection and Miffy Lifestyle Collab For Summer 2026Starbucks' new Road Trip collection is both sensible and stylish, featuring four drinkware styles in vibrant, lush shades of green. There's a classic Starbucks cup-style tumbler as well as a more modern Stanley Cup-esque version with a handle for easy carrying. Fans will also have the option to snag a smaller travel-ready mug-style hot cup and a tumbler.
The outdoorsy collection also includes a dual-tone mint-and-Starbucks apron-green canvas mini tote bag, a new foldable picnic blanket, and more surprises, which the brand promises are the perfect addition to "days spent chasing sunshine and making memories." Full details on pricing and what's included in the full collection were not immediately available.

Starbucks previews upcoming cups, tumblers and merch for summer 2026.As for the upcoming Starbucks x Miffy partnership, it appears Starbucks is playing into Miffy's curious nature, leaving most of the details to fans' imagination, at least for now—it did promise to share more in May.
While much of the collaboration is still being kept under wraps, what Starbucks is comfortable sharing at the moment is the suggestion that it's a totally "irresistible drinkware and lifestyle collection" that captures Miffy’s "playful curiosity and gentle charm," using it as an invitation to "slow down, sip, and savor the sweetest moments of the season."
And even with no photos of the collection just yet, fans are sure "ppl are gonna line up like sheep" for it.
"NO WAY MIFFY BRO," another rejoiced.
When Will the New Starbucks Cups, Tumblers and Summer-Inspired Merch Drop?Starbucks didn't explicitly say when its Road Trip-inspired collection would drop, but we would assume it would be the same day as the official release of its summer menu (Tuesday, May 12). So if you haven't grabbed one of its spring-inspired cups, consider the next couple of weeks your final countdown.
As for the Miffy collab, surprisingly, Starbucks did reveal when it would be available. While there are plenty of more details still to come, Starbucks x Miffy is due out the following Tuesday (May 19) in both the U.S. and Canada.

Highly-Anticipated ‘Spicy’ Romance Novel on Goodreads Gets TV Adaptation
There’s a new heated rivalry coming to television screens, and while it’s about athletes, hockey is not the name of the game this time around.
2023 romance novel Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner, which tells the story of two rival soccer players on the U.S. Women’s National Team who face off for the same position, but get distracted by their growing attraction to each other, is being developed as a series by Amazon MGM.

Deadline reports that the series Playing the Field will be an ensemble comedy about four players on a professional women’s soccer team in New Orleans, anchored by the romantic back-and-forth of two players on the team, captain Grace Henderson and new upstart Phoebe Matthews.
Sarah Tapscott, who previously served as a co-producer on The Sex Lives of College Girls and worked on shows like Single Parents and New Girl, will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Retired WNBA player and five-time Olympic gold medalist Sue Bird and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team darling and retired professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe will produce through their company A Touch More.

Wilsner will also executive produce the series, and took to Instagram to announce the news to fans, writing, “When I tell you this could not be in better hands, I mean it,” sharing that “Everyone working on this project is fantastic.”
View this post on InstagramWhen first published in September 2023, Cleat Cute was highly anticipated by fans of the genre on Goodreads, where the slow-boil romance was placed on the Readers' Most Anticipated September Romances list. With over 39,500 reviews on the bibliophile social media network, it has an average 3.7 out of five stars, where readers say it’s fun, spicy, “steamy yet wholesome,” and point out that while it’s set in the soccer world, the sport is not a focal point.

Bestselling Author Ranked as No. 1 ‘Most Anticipated’ Romance in 2026 on Goodreads
With so many romance and romantasy books coming out, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not know where to start. Goodreads is a great place to get some recommendations, with thousands of books making it to various lists. The “most anticipated” list tends to be popular, covering books that are confirmed for 2026.
There’s one that sits proudly at the top of this list. The Heat of the Moment by Camilla Isley is the one that readers are most excited about, although that’s only just ahead of Rein Me In, which happens to also be by Isley!
A New Addition to the ‘Meet Cute’ SeriesThe Heat of the Momentwill send shivers down a Supernatural fan’s spine, but the novel itself is adorably cute. While there is the romance, there is also a story of grief and love.
ER nurse Lily Finnigan has one goal after losing her husband in the line of duty: raise her daughter and keep her locked away. She doesn’t plan on falling in love again. At least, not any time soon. It’s only been four years since she was widowed!
Well, life always has other plans, and when Josh Collins walks into the ER, that’s proven. Lily wants to stay away, but she’s not sure how she can, especially when it turns out that not only is Josh a sexy firefighter, but he’s also her neighbor. Now he’s everywhere!
While this is part of the Meet Cute collection of books, you don’t need to read the first one to understand this. The collection is a series of standalone books.
Boldwood Books
Don’t Overlook ‘Rein Me In’Sure, The Heat of the Moment is the No. 1 pick for Goodreads users right now, but in a close second place is Rein Me In. The former is already out, but Rein Me In will be released in May 2026, and it follows a single dad rather than a single mom.
Faye is a new teacher at a small-town high school, where she wants to disappear. However, Ryder isn’t going to give her a chance of a fresh start. He isn’t going to let anyone tell him how to raise his children, and that leads to him storming into the classroom with a few choice words.
Now the two can’t avoid each other, and sure enough, sparks start to fly. Is Faye ready to settle, or will she decide to flee again?
1982 Hit Named ‘Most Complex Pop Song of All Time' Released 44 Years Ago Today
Released on April 14, 1982, “Never Gonna Let You Go” by Sérgio Mendes has become one of the most unlikely chart hits of its era—and one of the most musically intricate.
The song, written by legendary songwriting duo Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, was first recorded by Dionne Warwick before Mendes released his now-definitive version in 1983, featuring vocalists Joe Pizzulo and Leeza Miller.
Related: 1967 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Captured a Quiet Love Story
It went on to become a major hit, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending four weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart—a strong showing for a song that, behind the scenes, is anything but simple.
Related: 1975 Classic Hit No. 1 51 Years Ago Today—It Was Inspired by a Forbidden Love
Decades later, musician, producer and educator Rick Beato gave the track a new level of recognition when he called it “the most complex pop song of all time” in a 2021 analysis on his YouTube channel.
Beato pointed to the song’s constant key changes, unusual chord progressions, and unpredictable structure as reasons it stands apart from typical radio hits. In his breakdown, he recalls first encountering the track as a young musician and being completely thrown off by how quickly it shifts musically.
Related: 1977 No. 1 Hit Ranked in ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Haunting Anthem
“I’d never seen a song that went through so many different chord changes,” Beato said, describing his first attempt to learn it.
Despite that complexity, “Never Gonna Let You Go” doesn’t sound complicated to casual listeners, which is a paradox that helps explain its success. The melody is smooth, the arrangement is polished, and the emotional core is easy to connect with, even as the underlying structure constantly shifts.
Beato also noted how unusual it is for a song this harmonically dense to become a mainstream hit, especially by today’s standards.
Related: 1971 Classic Ranked No. 1 ‘Best Album of the 70s’
“You don’t even notice that it changes keys like a hundred times,” he said.
Originally, the song had been offered to Earth, Wind & Fire, who passed on recording it—a decision that ultimately opened the door for Mendes’ version to become the definitive one.
More than four decades later, the song remains a fascinating outlier: a soft, romantic ballad on the surface, and a masterclass in musical complexity underneath, which is proof that even the most intricate compositions can still find a wide audience.

Quote of the Day: Reba McEntire's 9 Words on Fear Say It All
Reba McEntire may be the Queen of Country, but the kindness, warmth and humor she displays onThe Voiceand Happy's Place makes it easy to forget that she's sold over 75 million records and released 25 No. 1 hits over the course of her career! From music to acting to hosting, McEntire has not only done it all, she's done it all exceptionally and is still going strong. But behind that iconic red hair and unmistakable voice is a woman whose life has been shaped by curiosity, courage and resilience.
McEntire was born on March 28, 1955 in McAlester, Oklahoma and raised on a cattle ranch. Her mom was a gifted singer, while her father was a rancher and champion steer roper. By her freshman year of high school, Reba and her siblings had formed a vocal group and were already performing at local rodeos and events.
She wasn't even out of her teens when country artist Red Steagall heard her sing the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo in 1974 and invited her to Nashville to record a demo. But a young Reba was terrified and on the car ride there, she kept making up excuses about why they should turn the car around. In her memoir—My Story—Reba revealed that her mother finally said, "If you don't want to go to Nashville, we don't have to do this. But I'm living all my dreams through you." And they continued on.
The demo Reba recorded on that trip would land her a deal with Mercury Records. For the next six years, she worked tirelessly—writing, recording, touring—and released a whopping 13 singles. Nothing seemed to move the needle, but she refused to give up. One day, she heard a song and knew she had to record it. At first, her producer told her no—thinking her voice was best suited for demos—but she fought for herself and he eventually agreed. On Oct. 2, 1982, "Can't Even Get the Blues"—Reba's 14th single—was officially released. Three months later, it became her first No. 1 hit. "It took a long time," she told Billboard in 2020. "But boy, it was worth it."
From there, Reba was off to the races with multiple platinum albums, sold-out tours and radio hits. Starting in 1984, she won Female Vocalist of the Year at the CMAs four times in a row. In 1987, she earned her first Grammy for "Whoever's in New England" and three years later, made her film debut in Tremors.
On March 15, 1991, McEntire and her band performed a private show for IBM executives in San Diego, California. After the concert, they needed to get to Fort Wayne, Indiana for their next show. However, because Reba was recovering from bronchitis, she decided to stay behind and fly out the following day. It was a decision that saved her life: Just minutes after takeoff, the chartered plane carrying her band crashed into the side of a mountain. All ten people on board were killed—seven of her band members, her tour manager Jim Hammon and both pilots.
Her heart was completely shattered. "I didn't know how I could go on," she said. She seriously considered walking away from music entirely. But instead of giving up, she channeled her grief into an album she dedicated to her fallen friends. For My Broken Heart was released on Oct. 1, 1991, and it would become one of the best-selling records of her entire career.
Since then, she's made her dazzling Broadway debut, had her own sitcom—Reba—that ran for six seasons, earned a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame and received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. Currently, you can see her on two hit NBC shows: The Voiceand Happy's Place. Through every hit song and accolade—and every setback and heartbreak—Reba continues to inspire—and that's why she's our quote of the day.
Quote of the Day by Reba McEntire"The flip side of fear isn't fearlessness. It's curiosity."
This quote is from Reba's 2023 book—Not That Fancy. It's so Reba—meaning it's so unique that I've never heard anyone else describe fear in this way. We've always been taught that the opposite of fear is being brave; that we have to face challenges head-on. And that can be so stressful and overwhelming. But the "Fancy" singer presents it as something entirely different. When we encounter something that scares us, it's not about finding the strength to tackle it; it's about being curious enough to want to discover what the other side of that feels like. It makes fear feel so much more manageable.

Deeper Meaning of Reba's Quote—Fearless CuriosityNow that you've seen this quote, think about Reba's career one more time. For over 50 years, she's been living by these words. She was terrified on that drive to Nashville to record her first demo, but she was curious about what could happen once she finished it. She landed her first record deal. While her producer previously only had her sing ballads, Reba fought to record "Can't Even Get the Blues" because she loved it and was curious about how an upbeat song would do. It became her first No. 1 single! And when she was curious about acting, she dove in and got her own TV show.
Life is not about finding the courage to face something that scares you—it's having the curiosity to discover what could happen after you take a chance and try.

'60s Rocker Addresses Last Phone Call With Legendary Drummer
Veteran rocker Bill Ward is looking back on one of his most emotional memories: his final phone conversation with late drum icon Cozy Powell.
Speaking during a recent appearance on LA Radio Sessions, the founding member of Black Sabbath shared deeply personal reflections about their friendship, revealing that the call came just two weeks before Powell’s sudden death in 1998.
During the radio segment, Ward recalled how meaningful that last conversation was.
“My last phone call with Cozy, actually, was about two weeks before he passed away,” he said. “And I am so glad that I was able to talk to Cozy on really meaningful topics and heartfelt conversation.”
WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA - NOVEMBER 11: Musician Bill Ward speaks during Black Sabbath Reunion Press Conference at Whisky a Go Go on November 11, 2011 in West Hollywood, California. (Photo by Chelsea Lauren/WireImage)The drummer explained that he and Powell had not spoken for some time before reconnecting. That made the call even more significant.
“I hadn't spoken to him for a while, and then, of course, two weeks later, he passed away, which was heartbreaking,” Ward added.
Powell, known for his powerful style and work with major rock acts, died on April 5, 1998, following a car crash in England. He was 50 years old. His death shocked the music world and left a lasting void among fellow musicians and fans alike.
Beyond the emotional memory, Ward spoke with admiration about Powell’s talent and influence. He remembered first meeting him when they were both young musicians, noting how impressed he was even then.
“Well, Cozy Powell was somebody that I first met when we were still kids. Great drummer. Tight,” Ward said. “I was attracted to his personality. He was a nice man — very nice man.”
Ward also praised Powell’s musical style, linking it to legendary jazz influences like Buddy Rich while noting how perfectly it fit into rock music. “It fitted really well into rock. It's almost like his body and the way that he played was designed for that era,” he explained.
He emphasized Powell’s versatility and success, pointing out that the drummer even had charting solo records built around drum performances—something rare in popular music.
“He had a lot of hit records by himself as a single artist… He was always available, always listening. I think he was a drummer’s drummer,” Ward said.
Now approaching his late 70s, Ward admitted that revisiting memories of lost friends brings mixed emotions.
“It's so sad, very sad, now when I'm thinking about it,” he said. “It's an incredible journey, but there's also a price to pay… The memories alone are often sad as well as brilliant opportunities. It's a mixed bag.”
Despite the sadness, Ward ended his tribute on a deeply affectionate note: “So, yeah, Cozy was an angel. That's what Cozy Powell was.”
Ward’s comments come as fans continue to celebrate the legacy of Black Sabbath, a band that helped define heavy metal in the 1970s alongside members like Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler. As one of the group’s founding figures, Ward remains a key voice in preserving rock history through stories like this.

But just before she was officially named the No. 1 pick, everything changed.
For the main stage moment, Fudd stepped out in a completely different sequined gown: warmer, brighter and even more eye-catching under the lights.
The dress featured a deep V-neckline and a fitted silhouette that highlighted her athletic frame. Thin straps and a sleeveless cut kept the focus on the design, while the sequins created wave-like patterns in gold, copper, bronze, burnt orange, champagne and deep purple tones.
Every step she took made the dress shimmer like moving fire under the draft lights.
She kept her accessories simple, holding her hands together and showing off a few rings, including a standout diamond piece. The outfit itself did all the talking, giving her a glamorous and powerful presence as she walked onto the stage.

One fan said, “Gorgeous. That dress is the #1 pick of her fits draft night too.”
Another wrote, “Wow. Her stylist is amazing.”
Others simply reacted with short praise like “So pretty” and “Beautiful model mid basketball player.”
One comment even said, “I think I love this one more!” while another added, “Love this look 😍.”
Fudd’s draft night wasn’t only about fashion. The moment she was selected by the Dallas Wings marked a major step in her career, as she officially joined a team looking to build a new era of success.
After her name was called, she shared an emotional moment hugging her parents at her table. She also celebrated with teammates and supporters in the crowd, including her former UConn teammate Paige Bueckers, who was seen applauding during the announcement.
Fudd later spoke about her excitement to reunite with Bueckers on the court.

Iconic ’70s Rocker Makes Fan-First Move Amid 2026 Tour
A legendary drummer from the 1970s rock era is getting attention online after taking a very personal step for fans.
Phil Ehart, co-founder and longtime drummer of the American rock band Kansas, was seen signing copies of his memoir I AM PHIL for fans who pre-ordered autographed editions.
The moment was shared through a Kansas Instagram post showing Ehart focused on signing books. The post included this caption:
"Phil Ehart is spending today autographing copies of his book, "I AM PHIL," for those who pre-ordered autographed copies.”
Ehart is best known as the powerhouse drummer and co-founder of Kansas, a band formed in 1973 in Topeka, Kansas. The group became one of the most recognizable names in progressive rock, known for major hits like “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind.”

Over the decades, Ehart has remained one of the key steady members of Kansas, performing on every studio album since the band’s debut. He is also widely credited for helping guide the group through more than 50 years of lineup changes and major tours.
His new memoir, “I AM PHIL,” is described as a personal account of his life and career, focusing on his own experiences rather than only the band’s history.
View this post on InstagramEhart told Blabbermouth that in the book’s introduction, "I didn't want to write a book that hid behind mythology.”
"This is my story as I lived it, messy, meaningful, and real,” he continued.
The book explores both his rise in music and the personal challenges that came with it, giving fans a closer look at the man behind the drums.
Kansas is known for blending progressive rock with strong melodies and complex arrangements. Since its formation, the band has sold millions of albums and built a global fan base.
Ehart’s role has always gone beyond drumming. He has been a co-founder, band leader, and long-time manager, helping keep Kansas active through decades of change in the music industry. He also co-wrote some of the band’s well-known songs, adding to his influence on their sound.
In recent years, Ehart has also dealt with health challenges, including a major heart attack in 2024 that led him to step back from touring. Despite that, he has remained connected to Kansas and its activities behind the scenes.
The book is available for preorder at PhilEhart.net, with signed copies being prepared directly for fans who reserved them early.

1985 No. 1 Art Rock Hit Became the Anthem of a Cult Classic Still Beloved 37 Years Later
April 14, 2026, marks the 37th anniversary of the release of the romantic comedy-drama film Say Anything…, in which actor John Cusack stars opposite Ione Skye as Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court.
The movie, which debuted in theaters by 20th Century Fox on April 14, 1989, is a coming-of-age film that captures the intensity of first love and focuses on the unlikely pairing of two high school graduates. Cusack’s character is an unconventional dreamer without a future plan, while Skye’s role is that of a class valedictorian who is headed for academic success.
Regardless of the striking contrast between the two individuals, Dobler (Cusack) doesn’t hesitate to pursue Court (Skye), which works in his favor as she accepts his romantic gestures.
An Iconic SceneThough drama unfolds and tension builds as the story continues with Court’s overprotective father being unaccepting of Dobler, one moment in the Cameron Crowe-directed film has stood out as an iconic scene that will be remembered for years to come.
And that’s the famous “boombox scene.”
In that sincere and vulnerable moment, Dobler is shown standing outside Court’s bedroom window late at night, holding a boombox over his head. What’s heard at that point is Peter Gabriel’s 1986 soft rock classic “In Your Eyes,” being blasted into the air.
The song became a defining moment of the film that still carries weight today because it captures a feeling of emotional risk that’s both rare and timeless. In pop culture, that boombox moment became a long-lasting symbol of romantic devotion.
A Near-MissSurprisingly, however, “In Your Eyes” almost never made it into the film. According to Entertainment Weekly, Crowe had the initial idea of using Billy Idol’s “To Be A Lover,” but that song would’ve changed the vibe of the story.
“No song worked, especially ‘To Be A Lover,’ or anything we were playing in the boom box in the number of times that we tried to shoot it—nothing worked,” he told the outlet. “We had songwriters come in and try to write a song—nothing worked.”
Crowe had an inkling to listen to his old wedding tape that included the Gabriel hit. He says listening to “In Your Eyes” gave him “this chill because all the words linked up to what we'd filmed and what we were struggling to find a score to or a song.”
“I just raced to the editing room, and we put it on, and it was perfect,” he shared.
However, locking down the song was another battle.
“A guy from Geffen Records (Gabriel’s label) came and saw the movie, took me aside and said, ‘I'm going to tell you what nobody else is going to tell you. It's not Fast Times. You've really missed with this movie. If you really want to save your career, you should be doing another Spicoli movie, and I'm just going to tell you the truth right now,” Crowe recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh f—, now we're really not going to get the song. We're doomed.’”
The other rejection Crowe faced was an initial “no” from Gabriel, himself, who told him, "I appreciate you asking for the song. It's a very personal song to me, and I just hope you don't mind that I have to turn you down."
Luckily, Gabriel had mistaken Crowe’s film for someone else’s, and after watching it, he ultimately approved the use of the song.In the end, that near-missed opportunity became the very heartbeat of Say Anything… Decades later, the image of Dobler standing beneath Courti’s window, holding a boombox with his heart on the line and the classic “In Your Eyes” playing on, remains one of cinema’s most memorable expressions of love.
