Olympic Skating Legends, Who Captivated the World With 'Boléro' at the 1984 Winter Olympics, Honored by King Charles
There are few Olympic figure skaters who transformed the sport in the 1980s like Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. The British duo, known as Torvill and Dean, are among the most celebrated ice dancers in Olympic history. Their technical precision and story-driven skating routines transformed the sport and made them one of the most popular and well-known skating pairs of all time. In recognition of their contributions to figure skating, the pair received one of the highest honors in the United Kingdom from none other than King Charles III.
Honored by King Charles III for Their Lasting Legacy @c5newsIce skating champion Sir Christopher Dean joked with the King that he is enjoying retirement and would “recommend it” as he was honoured alongside Dame Jayne Torvill at Windsor Castle today. The ice dance duo was among 68 people to receive awards from the King on Tuesday, alongside Luther star Sir Idris Elba and comedian and actress Dame Meera Syal. The pair made history when they took home the Olympic gold at the 1984 Winter Games for their “Bolero” performance, and later became the faces of celebrity competition show Dancing On Ice.
♬ original sound - Channel 5 News - Channel 5 NewsHonoring the pair's extraordinary contributions to ice skating and their decades of voluntary service, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were named in the 2026 New Year Honours. Torvill was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, while Dean received a knighthood. The pair were formally presented with their honors by King Charles III during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle in June. Newly retired, Dean reflected on the recognition, describing it as the culmination of 50 years of skating.
The "Bolero" Performance That Changed Olympic Figure SkatingBest known for their iconic free dance to Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Torvill and Dean became international superstars after their performance earned perfect scores for artistic impression and a total of twelve perfect 6.0 marks, creating one of the most legendary moments in Olympic history.
More than 24 million viewers in the United Kingdom watched the routine, making it one of the country's most-watched television broadcasts ever. Decades later, their "Bolero" performance remains the gold standard for Olympic ice dancing and is frequently cited as one of the greatest figure skating performances in history.
Olympic Medals and a Historic ReturnAt a time when Olympic rivalries often became political statements, Torvill and Dean finished fifth at the 1980 Winter Olympics before dominating international ice dancing. They won the Olympic gold medal in Sarajevo in 1984 before turning professional.
The duo later returned to Olympic competition in 1994, winning the bronze medal in Lillehammer after a change in eligibility rules once again allowed professional skaters to compete.
A Career That Extended Far Beyond the OlympicsBeyond their Olympic success, Torvill and Dean enjoyed a 50-year professional skating career and later served as head judges on the U.K. reality series Dancing on Ice.
Despite their enduring careers on and off the ice, "Bolero" may be their greatest legacy. Among the first ice dancing teams to tell a complete story through choreography, the pair's flowing purple costumes, Jayne Torvill's signature short hairstyle, and the way they embodied the music's steadily building tempo created an unforgettable performance that continues to transport fans back to 1984, when the remarkable duo effortlessly skated into the hearts of millions around the world.
Torvill and Dean transformed Olympic ice dancing, inspiring generations of skaters and captivating millions of fans. More than 40 years after their gold medal performance, their influence on the sport remains unmatched, and their recognition by King Charles III serves as a fitting tribute to two of figure skating's greatest legends.

'70s Rock Legend Who Was Just 20 When He Delivered 'Electrifying' Woodstock Jam Turns 77
When Michael Shrieve walked onto the Woodstock stage in August 1969, he was just 20 years old and virtually unknown outside the San Francisco music scene. By the end of Santana's performance of "Soul Sacrifice," however, the young drummer had delivered one of the festival's defining moments.
In his book "Great Rock Drummers of the Sixties," author Bob Cianci called Shrieve's drum solo "electrifying," writing that the performance showcased "incredible chops" for a drummer as young as Shrieve was at the time.

Born July 6, 1949, Shrieve joined Santana at just 19 after impressing the band's manager during a jam session. Only weeks later, the group took the stage at Woodstock before its debut album had even been released. The performance launched Santana into the national spotlight and turned Shrieve, then the festival's second-youngest musician, into one of rock's most talked-about young drummers.
Shrieve remained with Santana through the band's first seven albums, including Santana, Abraxas, Santana III, Caravanserai, Welcome and Borboletta. Along the way, he helped steer the band's increasingly adventurous sound, co-writing four tracks on Caravanserai before leaving in the mid-1970s to pursue jazz fusion, electronic music and a wide range of collaborations.
Over the decades, Shrieve worked with artists including Steve Winwood, Roger Hodgson, Andy Summers, Klaus Schulze, Mick Jagger and Bill Frisell, building a career that stretched far beyond the Woodstock stage. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Santana in 1998, and in 2011, Rolling Stone readers ranked him among the greatest drummers of all time.

"The musical highlight of the original Woodstock concert in 1969 may well be Santana's 10-minute performance of 'Soul Sacrifice,'" wrote Rolling Stone at the time. "Drummer Michael Shrieve holds the whole thing together, and Santana was never quite the same after he left in 1974."
Related: One of Rock’s Most Underrated Voices Turns 76 Today
Yet Shrieve says it took years to fully understand what that Woodstock performance meant. Speaking to MisplacedStraws in 2024, he admitted he never expected people would still be talking about it more than half a century later.
"Nothing prepares you for the length of time, the duration of time where people still derive joy from it," said Shrieve.
He acknowledged that the response was obvious even in the moment, recalling that Santana hadn't even released a record yet but still connected with the massive Woodstock crowd. Looking back today, however, what amazes him isn't the immediate reaction but the performance's lasting emotional impact.
"I'm glad that I could do something that people enjoyed and still enjoy," he said.

Shrieve also revealed that, from a musician's perspective, he doesn't even consider Woodstock to be the band's finest rendition of "Soul Sacrifice."
"I could show you a clip from another festival a year later where my drum solo is much better, the band is playing much better … But what gets me is how moved people are still by that performance."
Now 77, Shrieve's legacy reaches well beyond one famous afternoon in 1969. But for generations of rock fans, the image of the young drummer delivering that electrifying "Soul Sacrifice" performance remains one of Woodstock's most unforgettable moments, proving that sometimes a single performance can echo for a lifetime.

Quote of the Day: Psychologist B.F. Skinner on Ingenuity and the Importance of Human Intelligence
The human mind is truly a wonder to think about. Even without reflecting on the most visionary thing you’ve ever come up with, just considering all of the philosophers before us who influenced what we think today, or psychologists who figured out how the brain works or why certain people behave the way they do, is enough to be amazed at how smart people can be. And B.F. Skinner was one psychologist and behaviorist who contributed so much to understanding human behavior.
As VeryWellMind reported, Skinner’s “ideas continue to impact how we understand human actions,” as he was an “influential psychologist” who is known for his theory of operant conditioning and his belief in radical behaviorism. According to Harvard University’s Department of Psychology, Skinner was the quintessential experimental scientist, with lab rats and pigeons in contraptions that hoped to answer questions about behavior. Given his profession and his work, it makes sense that our quote of the day features his thoughts on human intelligence and the importance of ideation.
An EBCO study reported that John B. Watson, Ivan Pavlov and Skinner led the study of behaviorism in the early 20th century. This field of psychology “asserts that behavior can be shaped through interactions with the environment.” While Pavlov came up with classical conditioning—which says that people learn through associations—Skinner pioneered operant conditioning, which states that behavior can be altered via reinforcements or punishments. VeryWellMind reported that some of his findings were controversial because they implied the lack of free will in humans, and he later tried to “dispel many rumors” such as these.
Skinner was born in 1904, and his career and much of his research took place after he received his PhD from Harvard in 1931 until he died in 1990, with the majority of his studies and writing happening from the 1950s through the 1970s. He taught at Harvard, the University of Minnesota and Indiana University, then went back to Harvard for the rest of his career. And today’s quote by Skinner came from 1969 and focuses on the human mind and ingenuity and the importance of continued creativity.
Quote of the Day by B.F. SkinnerCanvaPro/Parade
“But the real question is not whether machines think but whether men do.”
This quote comes from Skinner’s 1969 book, Contingencies of Reinforcement: A Theoretical Analysis. It appears later in the book, and is part of a larger paragraph:
“It is only when machines seem to take over central processes that we grow uneasy. When they select stimuli, identify patterns, convert stimuli into forms more suitable for processing, categorize data, extract concepts and follow problem-solving strategies, they perform functions which in man are attributed to Mind… But the real question is not whether machines think but whether men do. The mystery which surrounds a thinking machine already surrounds a thinking man.”
Related: Quote of the Day: Poet Edgar Allan Poe on the Power of Creativity, Imagination and Daydreaming
Deeper Meaning of B.F. Skinner’s Quote—The Importance of Human CreativityIn a world where AI is super prevalent, this quote from Skinner feels more relevant now than it was in the late 1960s. As he states, he’s referring to larger computers that did lots of complex formulas and computations. They might have been able to problem-solve as he said, but they weren’t “thinking” the way that AI chatbots are now.
However, as Skinner’s main point says, it isn’t necessarily whether machines can think, but more so whether humans still think and use their brains. Humans need to continue using their intelligence and being creative, because that’s something technology can’t replicate (or at least not well). Philosophical thinking, ingenious ideas, clever storytelling and emotionally moving art are things that humans have been great at for centuries, and it shouldn’t go away anytime soon.
When looking at Skinner’s quote, it’s good to remind ourselves to embrace creativity and grow our knowledge through experiences and experimentation. Read books, even ones that you usually wouldn’t, and especially ones that might expand your mind. Whether you’re interested in using computers and technology to aid in thinking or planning things for you, it’s always good to remember that the human mind is complex. It can come up with a vast number of things that contain such imaginative ideas only a person could have thought up. We are all original and bring so much to the world and others around us. So don’t ever stop thinking and creating.
More Quotes from B.F. Skinner- “We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading. Knowing the contents of a few works of literature is a trivial achievement. Being inclined to go on reading is a great achievement.”
- “A failure is not always a mistake, it may simply be the best one can do under the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying. ”
- “The only geniuses produced by the chaos of society are those who do something about it. Chaos breeds geniuses. It offers a man something to be a genius about.”
- “Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten.”
- “A person who has been punished is not thereby simply less inclined to behave in a given way; at best, he learns how to avoid punishment.”
- “We are only just beginning to understand the power of love because we are just beginning to understand the weakness of force and aggression.”

This Timeless Sitcom, Which Tested Poorly, Premiered 37 Years Ago Today
Larry David is still creating laugh-out-loud material on the small screen after all these years. Just look at HBO's Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness as exhibit A.
Looking back, he once wrote for Saturday Night Live — and Sunday, July 5 marked exactly 37 years since the sitcom of all sitcoms premiered on TV, which he created with Jerry Seinfeld.
And fun fact: Seinfeld went by a different title at first. In 1989, The Seinfeld Chronicles is what households first witnessed.
"Good News, Bad News" was the pilot episode's title, as fans might recall, though that might surprise some since virtually the rest of the installments that aired began with the word "the" ("The Contest," "The Soup Nazi," etc.).
Plus, die-hards might also remember that Emmy-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus — AKA Elaine — didn't even appear in the debut episode. Instead, we first meet Kramer (Michael Richards), Jerry (Seinfeld) and George (Jason Alexander), the latter two kicking off "Good News, Bad News" with a nit-picky conversation about a button-down shirt. Co-creator David, 79, calls back this topic in the series finale of Seinfeld when Jerry and George sit in a jail cell together — remember?
Luckily, television critics spoke highly of The Seinfeld Chronicles when it first aired, despite previous test audiences reacting negatively to the content, and Seinfeld ultimately took shape. The rest is history, with the entertainment website Collider recently calling the show about nothing "the greatest American TV show ever made" for many reasons, including the fact that it broke out of the cutesy, family-centric sitcom mold and thrived on unpredictability.
Meanwhile, David's new HBO sketch series, which he co-created with former President Barack Obama, made headlines recently when its second episode featured the great Rob Reiner in his final role. In ultimate satirical form, the late actor and filmmaker is pitch perfect as George Washington. Find out more here.

'80s Rock Band, Formed by Accident, Ranked Among 'Best Supergroups' of All Time
The Traveling Wilburys, the rock band formed by five legendary musicians, left a remarkable legacy that is now recognized with a prestigious all-time ranking.
In a ranking released by Louder Sound, the band was named among the best supergroups in rock history alongside Cream and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Securing the eighth spot, the five-piece band composed of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan created a different kind of music that featured folk rock, heartland rock and roots rock.
Described as the “billion-dollar quintet” due to the members’ musical careers, the supergroup never intended to form a band. Instead, the Traveling Wilburys came together entirely by accident.
Back in the '80s, Harrison, along with Lynne and Orbison, was in Los Angeles for dinner when the former Beatles member mentioned that he needed to record a song the next day.
The Traveling Wilburys members in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. The Electric Light Orchestra co-founder offered to produce it while Orbison volunteered to sing on the track.
The last-minute session led Harrison to Tom Petty's house to pick up the guitar he had left there. The encounter prompted Petty to join the trio after hearing that they were working on something.
Bob Dylan came into the picture when the group had nowhere to record the track because most of the studios in Los Angeles were fully booked on such short notice.
The singer-songwriter offered to let the band use his home studio in Malibu and the rest is history.
“It was just too good to miss... George conned us into doing it!… We were all sitting there throwing in words, and it was so easy you couldn’t believe it. It was so, so easy,” Petty told Mojo Magazine in 2010, as mentioned by Beatles Rewind.
Before their debut, the band members used humorous pseudonyms instead of their real names, posing as half-brothers from an imaginary family called the Wilburys, which inspired the band name, The Traveling Wilburys.
Harrison adopted the name Nelson Wilbury while Dylan took Lucky Wilbury, Petty became Charlie T. Wilbury Jr., Orbison became Lefty Wilbury and Lynne adopted Otis Wilbury.
Using these pseudonyms gave the musicians a chance to escape the pressure and expectations attached to their individual fame.
Rather than ending because of internal conflict, The Traveling Wilburys did not break up abruptly but gradually came to a close following their second and final album in 1991.
Moreover, the death of Orbison in 1988, shortly after the release of their debut album, had a profound impact on the band, leaving the supergroup without one of its founding members.

50 Years Ago, Two Outlaw Country Legends Recorded Two Classics in One Day
Some of country music's most memorable moments happen on stage. Others happen quietly behind studio doors. On July 6, 1976, two of the genre's biggest icons, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, came together at Cash's House of Cash Studios in Hendersonville, Tenn., to record two songs that would become lasting reminders of country music's outlaw movement: "There Ain't No Good Chain Gang" and "I Wish I Was Crazy Again."
By the mid-1970s, both artists had already cemented themselves as leading voices in country music, each known for pushing beyond Nashville's traditional expectations. Jennings had become one of the faces of the outlaw country movement, while Cash's unmistakable voice and rebellious spirit had made him one of the genre's most influential stars.
Their July 1976 recording session brought those two forces together.
"There Ain't No Good Chain Gang" paired the pair's rugged vocals on a song about regret, consequences and hard-earned wisdom; subjects both singers had explored throughout their careers.
Released the following year, the duet climbed into the Top 10 on the country charts and remains one of the best-known collaborations between the two legends.
During the same session, Jennings and Cash also recorded "I Wish I Was Crazy Again," another reflective duet that showcased the easy chemistry they shared in the studio.
The recordings arrived during a defining period for outlaw country, a movement that emphasized artistic freedom over the polished "Nashville Sound" dominating much of country radio. Artists like Jennings and Cash helped reshape the genre by embracing grittier storytelling, more personal songwriting and greater creative control over their music.
Although each man had already enjoyed enormous solo success, their collaboration demonstrated why they were so often mentioned together whenever the era's biggest names were discussed. Their distinct voices complemented one another, creating performances that felt conversational rather than competitive.

I know the girlies fought for it like their life depended on it” and “The bouquet went through a lot. The girls were fighting.” Another asked, “Is that the actual bouquet or what was left of it?” To which a second commenter replied, “Most people do a special one just for tossing.”

Beloved '90s Rom-Com Queen, 58, Marks 24 Years of Marriage With a Rare Selfie
Julia Roberts rarely lets fans into her personal life, so a new post this weekend caught them off guard.
On July 4, the actress marked 24 years of marriage to cinematographer Danny Moder with a rare selfie on Instagram, leaning close to her husband. Her caption ran just two words, split by a red heart: "TWENTY FOUR."
View this post on Instagram A Fourth of July WeddingRoberts and Moder married on July 4, 2002, at her ranch in Taos, New Mexico. The date means their anniversary always lands on the holiday, a quiet celebration for one of Hollywood's most guarded couples. They met on the set of The Mexican and have been together ever since, a rare run of stability in an industry where it is anything but common. She marked their 23rd anniversary in 2025 the same quiet way.

A Rare Look at a Private MarriageThe couple share three children: twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, born in 2004, and son Henry, born in 2007. Roberts, 58, has spoken often about keeping her family out of the spotlight, which is exactly why a post like this one stands out. She tends to save her Instagram for causes and the occasional romantic throwback, not personal milestones.
The Erin Brockovich Oscar winner and Pretty Woman icon has spent decades as one of the most famous women on the planet while saying remarkably little about her marriage. Fans filled the comments with congratulations within minutes. For a star who protects her private life as fiercely as Roberts does, two words and a selfie said plenty.
What Penélope Cruz Just Revealed About Her 16-Year Marriage May Surprise You
Don't listen to the haters. This is one celebrity relationship that lasts.
Penélope Cruz has been married to fellow Oscar-winner Javier Bardem for 16 years — and they've known each other for much longer than that.
In a new interview while out promoting her comedy The Invite, the beloved actress, 52, shared candidly about their rapport after tying the knot and bringing two kids into the world. And what she said to People might surprise you.
"I feel like I'm still learning [in my relationship], you know? And I am with somebody that I've known for 33 years," Cruz told the magazine in an article published Saturday, July 4. “I really know that person, but it's like, is there a day where you really get to know yourself? No. So the same with your partner."
Her new movie, directed by Olivia Wilde, is a prime example of couples "learning" things about each other. Cruz also told People that The Invite, which centers on the relationship dynamics of two couples at a dinner party, is so relatable because so many people are still discovering new things about their partners — regardless of how long they've been together.
In another recent interview to promote the film, Cruz revealed something else surprising about herself: “For the last 12 years, I study medicine every night of my life,” she told The New Yorker.
The actress shared she reads “books that are this thick about the endocrine system and stuff like that makes me so happy, so happy, and every night probably, I don’t know, five, six days a week for the last 12 years, I’ve been reading that for hours every night. And I love it. And I cannot explain why I love it.”
In the group interview, Wilde, 42, shared her unique hobby as well.
“It’s not that obscure, I love miniatures. I’m a miniac,” said the actress and filmmaker, adding that she has a miniature version of the original Seinfeld set.
1972 Rock Classic, Named No. 1 Hit Song, Became a Timeless Motivational Anthem
Some songs entertain. Others help define an era.
Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" did both. Released in 1972, the empowering anthem became the Australian singer’s breakthrough hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning a permanent place in pop culture. More than 50 years later, its message of resilience and self-belief continues to resonate with listeners around the world.
The song was born out of frustration.
After struggling to find music that reflected the growing women’s movement, Reddy decided to write one herself. Teaming with songwriter Ray Burton, she created "I Am Woman" as an anthem celebrating strength, perseverance and equality, hoping to give women a song they could truly call their own.
"It came to me and it wouldn't leave me," Reddy told Houston Public Media in 2014. "It was simply a phrase that — over and over, 'I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman.' And I thought, well, this has to be a song."
The message struck a chord almost immediately.
"I Am Woman" climbed steadily before reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Reddy the first Australian-born artist to top the chart. The song also earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, cementing her status as one of the decade’s biggest stars.
Its influence quickly extended beyond radio.
As the women's liberation movement gained momentum during the early 1970s, "I Am Woman" became closely associated with marches, rallies and celebrations of women's achievements. Although Reddy wrote it from a personal perspective rather than as a political statement, the song evolved into one of the defining cultural touchstones of the era.
"I couldn't find any songs that said what I thought being woman was about," Reddy said in a 2003 interview. "I thought about all these strong women in my family who had gotten through the Depression and world wars and drunken, abusive husbands. But there was nothing in music that reflected that. I certainly never thought of myself as a songwriter, but it came down to having to do it."
Over the decades, its message has continued to find new audiences. "I Am Woman" has appeared in films, television shows and documentaries while being covered and referenced by numerous artists. Its iconic chorus remains instantly recognizable, continuing to inspire listeners with its message of confidence and determination.
The song also transformed Reddy's career. Following its success, she went on to score a string of additional hits, including "Delta Dawn," "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)" and "Angie Baby," becoming one of the most successful pop artists of the 1970s.
More than 50 years after it topped the Billboard Hot 100, "I Am Woman" remains far more than a chart-topping hit. It endures as one of popular music’s greatest motivational anthems, proving that a song rooted in hope and empowerment can inspire generations long after its original release.

Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 FIFA World Cup Will Be His Final Tournament
It's the end of an era for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, July 5, ahead of Portugal's Round of 16 game against Spain on Monday, the soccer superstar, 41, confirmed that this year's World Cup will be his last, marking his final appearance with the Portuguese national team.
"It's about enjoying it as much as possible," Ronaldo said, per ESPN. "This will be my last World Cup, but let's hope tomorrow isn't my last game."
"The day will come [when I retire from international football]. But I'll be honest: whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience—100%, no, 1,000%. Because I've given everything in football," he continued.
While Ronaldo's future at the 2026 World Cup, as well as with the Portuguese national team, depends on Monday's game, the sports legend said his love of football remains, adding that he's proud of his showing at the tournament thus far.
View this post on Instagram"I don't need it; I have a good life, but it's about passion," Ronaldo, who has played in six editions of the tournament — including 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 — said of the sport. "I play football because I love it... You have to enjoy every day. And I've scored three goals [at this World Cup], I'm not doing too badly, right?"
He's already made history, becoming the first player to score in six World Cups after landing two goals in the back of the net against Uzbekistan in the group stage. Ronaldo also scored a penalty during the team's Round of 32 match against Croatia, marking his first goal in a World Cup knockout game.
"It's been fantastic," he added of this year's tournament, which has long been rumored to be the sportsman's final World Cup run. "It goes beyond the pitch... This is the World Cup I'll remember the most because of people's passion. It's even more this time; I don't know why. It's been, emotionally, the best. I've enjoyed it very much."
"I'm not lacking anything in life," Ronaldo went on to say as he reflected on his decades-long soccer career. "I'm not going to be more or less Cristiano because I win the World Cup. We have the qualities to win, but only one country can win it... Age gives you maturity and experience."
Ronaldo, who joined Saudi Pro League team Al-Nassr FC in 2023, with a contract that will keep him with the team through the summer of 2027, said he's thankful for it all, even the criticism he's received both on and off the pitch.
"I'm thankful even for the attacks I receive, turning 40 — and I hope to live another 40 years — with the criticism, that's how you grow the most as a person, and I thank you journalists for that," Ronaldo concluded.
Iconic '90s Trading Card Craze Turns 30 as Its 'Holy Grail' Sells for a Record $16.5 Million
A booster pack of Pokémon cards once cost just a few dollars.
In February 2026, a single Pokémon card sold for $16.492 million. The Pokémon Trading Card Game turns 30 this year, and the anniversary lands right in the middle of the biggest collecting boom the hobby has ever seen.
A Record-Breaking Year for a Childhood Card GameThe crown jewel is the Pikachu Illustrator, a 1998 Japanese promo handed out to winners of a CoroCoro Comic art contest. Just 39 official copies exist, and only one ever earned a perfect PSA 10 grade. Influencer and boxer Logan Paul bought that card in July 2021 for $5.275 million, then sold it in February 2026 for $16.492 million. Guinness World Records certified it as the most valuable trading card on the planet.
It was not the only jaw-dropper. A rare Japanese Base Set Charizard, long the most coveted card in the hobby, cleared $1.7 million in March. The cardboard monsters a lot of us once traded at recess now move like fine art.
Pokémon's 30th Anniversary PlansThe Pokémon Company is leaning all the way in. Its 30th Celebration expansion arrives worldwide on September 16, the first time a Pokémon TCG set has launched simultaneously across the globe. Every booster pack includes one of 30 different Pikachu foil cards, each drawn by a separate artist. A Pokémon Day 2026 collection is already rolling out with a stamped anniversary Pikachu and a commemorative coin.
Thirty years in, the little pocket monsters that started as a schoolyard trade have become some of the most valuable collectibles in the world. Somewhere, a parent is looking at that shoebox in the closet a little differently.
