Iconic '90s Rapper Snow, 56, Nails Performance of 'Informer': 'You Just Transported Me to 7th Grade'

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 6:28pm

Snow is 56. He was at a Toronto charity event over the weekend. He performed “Informer.” And then the internet did what it always does when it suddenly remembers something from middle school. It completely lost its mind: “You just transported me to 7th grade.” “I bought his cassette tape at the mall as a teenager.” “Why are we so old now.” Same.

The song was No. 1 for seven weeks straight in 1993. Nobody could understand the lyrics then. Nobody fully can now. Snow is genuinely the only person on earth who knows what he’s saying. He just proved it in Toronto and the whole thing ended up on TikTok.

@nowtoronto

Snow’s still got it! The Canadian rapper was spotted at a Toronto charity event over the weekend singing his 1992 hit song “Informer.” 🔥

♬ original sound – Now Toronto – Now Toronto

Here’s where to start with Snow though … Rick James was his babysitter when he was a kid. Rick James was dating a friend’s mother at the time. Just sit with that for a second. The rapper known as Snow’s real name is Darrin O’Brien, and he grew up in a housing project in Toronto’s North York district — Irish-Canadian kid surrounded by Jamaican neighbors who loved dancehall and changed everything for him. They called him Snow.

He fell hard for reggae. He eventually made a demo in Queens with rapper and producer MC Shan, got a record deal and then went to prison for assault. “Informer” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 while he was still in his cell. They released him to a limousine. Then told him he couldn’t tour America because of his criminal record. His song was No. 1 in the country. He couldn’t get into the country. He watched the whole thing from Toronto. And 12 Inches of Snow sold over eight million copies worldwide. That’s not a one-hit wonder. That’s one of the best-selling debut albums of 1993.

Related: 1993 One-Hit Wonder Songwriter Had Just Three Words for One of Rock’s Biggest Frontmen

The TikTok from Now Toronto shows Snow at his own give-back party — something he organized himself for his community. He gets up to thank the crowd first. “We all put this together and everybody came together,” he says. “Some people try to stop us but them can’t stop us.” Then, he launches into “Informer,” and the crowd does what every crowd does with “Informer”: goes somewhere between completely wild and completely confused.

“And the crowd went mild” writes one commenter which is the funniest thing anyone has written on the internet this week.

“The DJ sitting on the scooter got me rolling” writes another. “You do NOT grab the mic from the original OG.” Someone mentions Jim Carrey‘s Snow impression on In Living Color and honestly that’s a good reminder. When Jim Carrey’s parodying your song on the most-watched sketch comedy show on television, you’ve genuinely made it. Snow had made it.

@officiallyfunny4ever

#jimcarrey #snow #imposter #inlivingcolor #inlivingcolorjimcarrey #informer #musicparody

♬ original sound – Officiallyfunny4ever

But the comments that hit hardest aren’t the funny ones. They’re the ones where someone just looked up from their phone and quietly realized 30 years went by:

  • “I was OBSESSED with him when I was like ten. I tried looking him up in the phone book.”
  • “I’m still obsessed with Snow. I bought his cassette tape at the mall as a teenager.”
  • “42 year old millennial here — Informer is still in HEAVY rotation in my playlist.”
  • “I played the heck out of that cassette till it busted just on that one hit.”
  • And then there’s just: “Why are we so old now.”

Yeah. Same.

He Still Knows Every Word

Here’s what made “Informer” genuinely unlike anything else on the radio in 1993. Nobody knew what he was saying. He rapped in Jamaican patois so fast that the lyrics were basically impenetrable to anyone who hadn’t grown up listening to dancehall.

“He’s the only one that knows the lyrics” writes one fan. “I remember thinking I was so cool because I knew all the words. Somehow I still do. I’m 45 and can’t remember 5 minutes ago.” Everyone pretended they knew the words. Snow actually knew them. The song ended up in The Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest-selling reggae single in U.S. history.

In 2007, VH1 put it at No. 84 on their 100 Greatest Songs of the ’90s. In 2010, Pitchfork put it on their list of the seven worst No. 1 singles of the decade. Both of those things are true simultaneously. That’s the whole “Informer” experience right there. And Snow isn’t done. In 2019, he teamed up with Daddy Yankee on “Con Calma” — a full reworking of the “Informer” melody — which hit No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart and made it back onto the Billboard Hot 100. His first chart entry in 26 years. Still Snow.

Nobody knew he was Canadian. Nobody knew he was white. Nobody could understand a single word he was saying. They bought the cassette anyway. They played it till it broke. He’s 56 now and he still knows every word. He just proved it in Toronto. Some things don’t change.

2007 Career-Defining Hit, Inspired by a Reba McEntire Song, Is Still a Powerful Masterpiece 19 Years Later

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:42pm

19 years ago, on Sept. 10, 2007, Sugarland, made up of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, released their career-defining country hit, “Stay.”

Written solely by Nettles, the track became the Grammy-winning country duo’s signature hit, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, where it remained for four weeks. Though it never reached the top spot, “Stay” earned Sugarland two Grammy Awards for Best Country Song (awarded to Nettles as a songwriter) and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal.

A gentle acoustic ballad, “Stay” tackles the serious subject of infidelity, with Nettles portraying a frustrated mistress who begs her married lover to make a choice.  She pleads with him to leave his wife and choose her, but eventually realizes that waiting around for him isn’t worth it. In the end, Nettles walks away from the man she once longed for.

According to Country Thang Daily, Nettles was inspired to write the song after hearing Reba McEntire’s 1986 hit, “Whoever’s in New England,” which flips the script with a wife wondering why her husband is always away on business and suspecting he’s up to no good. Nettles’ “Stay” gives listeners the perspective of the other woman.

“19 years ago, we released “Stay” as the final single from Enjoy the Ride. Little did we know this song would go on to change our careers and prove to be such a defining anthem for us,” Sugarland wrote on Instagram, celebrating the song’s release. “It’s a song that still feels so emotionally raw and vulnerable after all these years. Thank you for always loving our music. ❤️”

Though it’s been nearly two decades since the release of “Stay,” the song still captures the hearts of listeners far and wide. Fans reminded of the 19th anniversary in Sugarland’s Instagram post chimed into the comments section, sharing just how much the song has impacted them throughout their lives.

“This song has been an anthem to so many seasons of my life,” one follower wrote. “Places I needed to escape and people I needed to leave behind. It still makes me emotional every time I hear it.”

“I absolutely love this song. Its really powerful lyrics and beautiful sound touch my heart,” a second person added, while a third fan wrote. “This song shuts down everything every time I hear it. 😢”

“Stay” appears on Sugarland’s second studio album, 2006’s Enjoy the Ride, which spawned three additional Top 10 country hits: “Settlin,’” “Want To,” and “Everyday America.”

Stephen Colbert Set to Make Late-Night Return Months After 'Late Show' Finale

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:21pm

Former Late Show host Stephen Colbert is set to make his return to late-night just four months after his show was canceled.

Colbert will appear as a guest on pal Jimmy Kimmel’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, September 15, according to LateNighter. His appearance will mark his first since saying goodbye in May.

The comedian signed off for the last time after CBS axed The Late Show after 33 years. Colbert sat at the host’s desk for 11 of those seasons.

Despite signing a five-year contract extension in 2023, CBS announced in July 2025 that they were pulling the plug on the series, claiming it was “purely a financial” decision.

“I do not dispute their rationale,” Colbert told The New York Times in May. “I do make jokes about it. But I also completely understand why people would say (A) that doesn’t make sense to me and (B) that seems fishy to me, because the network did it to themselves by bending the knee to the Trump administration over a $20 billion, settled for $16 million, completely frivolous lawsuit.”

He continued, “It’s possible that two things can be true. Broadcast can be in trouble. They cannot monetize because of things like YouTube, because of the competition of streaming. They’ve got the books, and I do not have any desire to debate them over what they say their business model is and how it does not work for them anymore. But less than two years before they called to say it’s over, they were very eager for me to be signed for a long time. So, something changed.”

Colbert’s appearance on Kimmel is set for one night after he and Kimmel go head-to-head for Outstanding Variety Series at the 78th Emmy Awards on Monday, September 14.

What will happen in the lead-up to Beyond the Gates Season 3?

The press release teased plenty of drama for fans to look forward to, as The Duprees, their friends and foes, will wade through a flood of fresh tests and triumphs.

As tensions simmer behind closed doors, a greater threat looms that could upend the entire community. Will Fairmount Crest ever be the same? Viewers will have to tune in and watch as the drama unfolds.

Will there be a crossover in Season 3 of Beyond the Gates?

Viewers watched as members of The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless made appearances on the CBS daytime drama during Seasons 1 and 2 and are now anxiously awaiting whether a similar crossover will happen in Season 3. As of right now, no crossovers have been confirmed, but that doesn’t mean that a crossover won’t happen in the future. Martha Stewart’s ‘Classy’ Ottoman Bench Is an Elegant Upgrade From Bulky Storage Bins, Now 68% Off

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:17pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Not every storage solution needs to look like a storage solution. While I love having a place to tuck away blankets, toys, and other items that pile up around the house, I don’t necessarily want another bulky bin or basket sitting out in the open. A piece that can pull double duty as furniture? Now that’s much more my style.

That’s what makes Martha Stewart’s Lily Pond Leslie Oval Storage Bench at Wayfair such a good find. It has a curvy, oval shape and fully upholstered design that make it look more like an accent piece than a spot to stash clutter. Right now, it is $158, down from $500 — that’s $340 off. According to shoppers, the bench delivers plenty of style while being “surprisingly spacious.”

The bench measures 48 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 18 inches high, making it a useful size for an entryway, bedroom, or living room. It can also fit beneath a window or at the end of the bed, where the extra seating can come in handy without taking up too much room.

The 4.25-inch-thick seat is filled with plush foam, giving you a comfortable spot to sit while getting ready or putting on shoes. It supports up to 400 pounds, so it’s sturdy enough for everyday seating. Lift the lid, and there’s plenty of hidden storage for blankets, toys, games, pillows, and other things you’d rather keep out of sight.

For safety purposes, the bench features a soft-close lid that gently shuts instead of slamming, making it especially handy for households with kids. There are also ventilation holes inside to promote airflow and help make the storage compartment safer for everyday use.

Shoppers appreciated how “functional” and “classy” the bench was. One reviewer said, “It looks high-end, the fabric is soft and durable, and it offers plenty of hidden storage for blankets, toys, and games.” Another shopper said it was “beautiful” and “comfortable” to sit on.

There’s no assembly required, either. Simply place the bench where you want it and put it to use.

Psychologists Warn Women Against Using This 2-Word Phrase That ‘Downplays’ Their Voice

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:15pm

As women, we’re socialized to be very compromising and amiable to others. We’re often shamed for taking up too much space with our opinions or what we have to say. This can manifest as phrases women say to keep the peace—even if it comes at a cost to our own well-being, mental state or self—or having “nice girl” behaviors that could actually be hurtful overall, in the long run. When you’re constantly worrying about others and being there for them, you never have time for yourself or to do what is true to you.

Starting at a young age, girls are conditioned to be “good” and not fight back against the greater consensus, even if that opinion is detrimental to them. From eldest daughters putting forth immense emotional labor to women getting imposter syndrome because they feel like they shouldn’t be at such high levels of authority, these lessons from childhood (and, again, from society) can really dim a woman’s light in adulthood.

But it’s not all dark; there are tips and tricks out there to help you get your power back—including knowing the one phrase psychologists want women to stop saying because it “downplays” their voice. Just like there are things that women shouldn’t apologize for, this phrase can shrink you and your opinions. Read on to find out what it is, and what you should start saying more of instead.

Related: If You Say These 7 Things Regularly, You ‘Exude Confidence Effortlessly,’ According to a Psychologist

The One Phrase Women Should Stop Using Because It ‘Downplays’ Their Voice, Psychologist Warns

In case you weren’t aware, words are powerful. What we say to ourselves as our inner critic or supporter, and what we say to others, can leave lasting impressions. That’s why it’s so important to be kind to ourselves, speak to our brains as if we were talking to our inner child and to remember to treat others with kindness and respect. And this is especially true if you’re a woman.

“Words matter, especially the ones we speak about ourselves,” noted Dr. Crystal Saidi, PsyD, a psychologist with Thriveworks, in a previous article about phrases that women should stop saying. “When women use dismissive, people-pleasing or shrinking phrases, it subtly reinforces the power dynamics and limits how confidently we show up.”

So what’s the one phrase you should stop using because of how it diminishes you and your credibility? “I’m just…”

“Whether it’s ‘I’m just a stay-at-home mom’ or ‘I’m just asking,’ the word ‘just’ shrinks whatever follows it,” Dr. Saidi also shared at the time. “It downplays your role, your voice and your contribution, even when it is valuable.”

If you say this two-word phrase, you’re letting others know, off the bat, not to take you seriously because you don’t take yourself very seriously. It comes off as unsure and has no authority.

Related: 10 Things Women Over 50 Should Never Apologize For

What Women Should Start Saying More Often

Of course, to start, it’s good to wipe out “just” from your vocabulary, at least when it comes to addressing yourself. Don’t preface a sentence, opinion or thought with “I’m just…” Confidently go straight into sharing your sentiment.

Outside of that, another phrase you should include in your lexicon more often is an unapologetic way to stand your ground: “I said what I said.”

“It’s bold, clean and unapologetic,” Dr. Sanam Hafeez, PsyD, a neuropsychologist and the Director of Comprehend the Mind, told Parade. “It shuts down the need to over-explain, walk back a truth or soften a boundary. It’s best used when someone tries to challenge, twist or diminish what you’ve already made clear.”

Related: 11 Boundaries Every Woman Should Set by 40, According to Therapists

Dr. Saidi also shared one more that’s assertive, respectful and a really good reminder to keep for yourself: “I can be kind and still say no.”

“This one is great because it affirms agency, encourages setting boundaries—which some women may struggle with—and promotes assertiveness,” she raved at the time. “It reminds women that they do not have to choose between being kind and respecting themselves.”

Sure, you can say this to someone else. But again, it’s good to keep repeating and reminding yourself.

This Iconic TV Star Was Nominated 10 Times but Never Won an Acting Emmy

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:13pm

Over the course of his career, Hugh Laurie, 67, has been nominated 10 times for an Emmy Award. Sadly, the British actor’s name has yet to be announced as a winner.

The iconic TV actor got his first nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2005 for his role as Dr. Gregory House on the FOX medical drama, House. He went on to be nominated five more times for his portrayal of the cranky but genius doctor over the course of the show’s eight seasons.

It’s all so strange. The whole notion of competitive acting is so weird,” Laurie told Entertainment Tonight of his Emmy nominations and lack of wins. “It would only have meaning as a competition — and that’s what it is — if 10 actors all played Jack Bauer.

The fact that Hugh Laurie NEVER got an Emmy for this show is a travesty beyond belief. Absolutely criminal.

— @DebsStillCute (@debsstillcute) January 11, 2025

He continued, “But until that happens, until they enter acting in the Olympic Games, I think the whole thing is kind of crazy.”

Luckily, he was rewarded in other ways for his role as Dr. House. He won two Golden Globe Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for his work on the popular show.

He went on to be nominated again at the Emmy Awards, this time for Outstanding Supporting Actor and Outstanding Drama Series (as a producer) for his work on AMC’s The Night Manager. He was also nominated twice for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as politician Tom James in Veep on HBO.

So, why didn’t Laurie win, especially for his role as Dr. House? Well, let’s just say the competition was tough. He was up against major actors and drama series, such as Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad, The Sopranos‘ James Gandolfini, and Jon Hamm in Mad Men.

Surprisingly, Laurie is not the actor with the most Emmy nominations and losses. That title goes to Angela Lansbury, with 17 nominations and no wins. Twelve of those nominations were for Murder, She Wrote.

Hit Song by Darius Rucker Named Among the 'Greatest Country Songs of All Time'

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:09pm

14 years after the debut of Hootie & the Blowfish‘s first album, Cracked Rear View, Darius Rucker released his first solo country record, 2008’s Learn to Live. The 2008 album ended up doing quite well, especially the record’s third track, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” which took home the No. 1 Billboard’s Hot Country Songs spot in October 2008.

The tune, which depicts a narrator revisiting a past relationship, was featured on Rolling Stone magazine’s ranking of “The 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time.” Rolling Stone placed “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” penned by Rucker and Clay Mills, at the list’s 174th spot.

Darius Rucker Discussed Making ‘Learn to Live’ in a 2009 Interview

In a 2009 interview with Digital Rodeo, Rucker discussed the debut of Learn to Live. He explained that while the album was in the country genre, he “didn’t feel like [he] was singing different or writing different” from when he was working on pop rock records for Hootie & the Blowfish.

“I just felt like I was making the record I wanted to make,” said Rucker during the interview.

In addition, he said he was “so, so worried about being accepted” among country fans because he was “coming from the pop world,” and was relieved when Learn to Live was celebrated.

“For radio people to have just said, ‘Okay, hey, we don’t care what everybody else does, what do you got?’ And then they heard it, and they liked it. To be accepted like that was when I really saw how real country music is, how there’s no BS here. It’s just real, and if you got the song, it doesn’t matter what you look like or where you’re from,” said Rucker, now 60.

While speaking to Digital Rodeo, Rucker also noted that Mills and producer Frank Rogers helped him write Learn to Live. He explained that making his 2008 country album “was so different” because he had been the sole songwriter for Hootie & the Blowfish.

“So when I started doing this, I really realized how songwriting in Nashville is a science. And it’s so beautiful,” said the musician.

1965 Rock Song, Recorded in New York, Is Still a Powerful Hit 61 Years Later

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:07pm

Sixty-one years ago, garage-rock group The McCoys released “Hang on Sloopy,” a defining hit for them that remains a classic in its genre.

Released in July 1965 as the lead single and title track of their debut studio album, “Hang on Sloopy” became a massive success. Upon its arrival, the song climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 1 on October 2. In total, the song spent 14 consecutive weeks on the tally.

Although the song remains uncertified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), it has sold over 1 million copies in the U.S. alone. The track served as the catalyst for the group’s career, launching them into mainstream international fame overnight.

The Creation of “Hang on Sloopy”

“Hang on Sloopy” was penned by songwriters Wes Farrell and Bert Berns in 1964. The track was originally recorded by R&B group The Vibrations under the name “My Girl Sloopy.”

In 1965, The McCoys re-titled and re-recorded the track in New York City with producers Bob Feldman, Gerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer. Lead singer Rick Derringer was only 16 years old at the time of the recording sessions, bringing a youthful charm to the track that captivated listeners.

“Hang on Sloopy” tells the story of a young girl who comes from a disadvantaged background on the wrong side of town. The track serves as a heartfelt plea, encouraging her to stay strong despite the difficult circumstances she faces. Its uplifting sentiment resonated deeply with a wide audience, establishing an appeal that has endured for decades.

Over six decades after its release, “Hang on Sloopy” remains a timeless garage-rock anthem. The track has persevered into the digital era, racking up nearly 57 million streams across its various versions on Spotify.

Wired vs. Wireless Home Security Systems: What’s the Difference?

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 5:00pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Wired and wireless home security systems can both protect a house effectively, but they differ in how they connect, how they’re installed and how easy they are to expand.

Wired systems rely on physical cables between sensors and a control panel. Wireless systems use radio signals, which usually makes installation faster and gives homeowners more flexibility when adding equipment later.

The better choice depends on the home, the existing setup and how much flexibility you want from the system.

ADT offers both wired and wireless options, along with professional installation and monitoring for homeowners who want help choosing the right configuration. Below, we break down the differences that matter most before you buy.

If you’re unsure which setup fits your home, ADT offers professional security consultations and can recommend equipment based on your existing system, property layout and monitoring needs.

What Is the Difference Between Wired and Wireless Security Systems?

Wired security systems use physical cables to connect sensors and other devices to a central control panel. Wireless security systems use radio signals to communicate between those components. Both can support professional monitoring, but installation, maintenance and expansion differ considerably.

A hardwired system typically requires cables running from sensors back to the control panel. In contrast, wireless sensors use batteries and communicate without those dedicated wires.

ADT notes that both types can provide effective home security, and both can be professionally monitored. Here’s how the main differences compare:

Feature

Wireless Security System

Sensor connection

Physical wiring

Radio signals

Installation

Usually more involved

Generally faster and less invasive

Expanding system

New wiring may be required

Additional sensors are easier to add

Are Wireless Security Systems Easier To Install?

Yes. Wireless security systems are generally easier to install because sensors don’t require dedicated wiring through walls. This also makes them easier to expand when homeowners want to add another door sensor, motion detector or other compatible device.

Installing a hardwired system in a finished home can involve routing cables behind drywall and connecting each sensor to the control panel. ADT notes that this process is generally more time-consuming than installing wireless equipment.

Wireless equipment provides more flexibility.

ADT’s current door/window sensors, for example, offer wireless mounting, while its motion sensors communicate wirelessly with the system. That doesn’t mean placement should be casual. Wireless sensors still have communication ranges and installation requirements. Walls, distance and other environmental conditions can affect performance.

Are Wired Security Systems More Reliable Than Wireless?

Wired systems avoid some of the radio interference that can affect wireless sensors, but reliability depends on the complete system rather than wiring alone. Modern wireless security systems use battery-powered sensors and can include cellular communication and backup power to maintain important security functions during outages.

Wired equipment has some inherent advantages. Because components communicate through cables, they aren’t subject to the same radio-frequency interference as wireless sensors.

Wireless systems address reliability differently.

ADT’s current security base supports Wi-Fi and cellular networks and includes up to 24 hours of battery backup. With qualifying professional monitoring, cellular backup allows alarm events to be transmitted when the home’s Wi-Fi connection is unavailable.

That distinction is important when comparing modern systems. Losing Wi-Fi doesn’t necessarily mean losing alarm communication when cellular backup is available.

Can Wireless Home Security Systems Be Hacked?

Wireless security devices face cybersecurity risks because they communicate over radio signals or connect to home networks. Strong passwords, secure Wi-Fi, software updates and account security reduce those risks. Wired equipment avoids some wireless threats but isn’t automatically immune from tampering or other security problems.

Homeowners with connected cameras should also pay particular attention to network security. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using strong, unique Wi-Fi and router administrator passwords. It also advises changing default credentials rather than leaving manufacturer settings in place.

ADT notes that wireless signals can experience interference and recommends proper system setup to maintain reliable communication. Current ADT equipment also uses encrypted communication between supported components.

Physical wiring brings different considerations. Older wired alarm systems that depend on traditional telephone lines may lose that communication path if the line is damaged or cut.

Homeowners who prefer wireless equipment without handling placement themselves can choose ADT professional installation. ADT says its technicians install the system, test it and identify potential security gaps before completing the appointment.

Do Wireless Security Systems Work if Wi-Fi Goes Down?

Wireless sensors don’t necessarily stop working when Wi-Fi fails because many communicate directly with the security hub rather than through the home’s wireless internet. Systems with cellular backup can also transmit supported alarm events when broadband service is unavailable.

This is one of the most common misconceptions about wireless security. “Wireless” doesn’t always mean every sensor depends on Wi-Fi.

ADT’s current base, for example, uses a dedicated wireless protocol to communicate with compatible sensors while Wi-Fi supports other connected features. Qualifying ADT monitoring plans also include cellular alarm backup.

Internet-dependent features such as camera streaming may still be affected during an outage.

ADT has even introduced a cellular-only setup option for qualifying ADT+ systems, allowing core security functions to operate without home Wi-Fi.

Is a Wired or Wireless Security System Better for Your Home?

A wireless system is often the easier choice for an existing home because installation requires less wiring, and additional sensors can be added more easily. Wired systems remain useful where cabling is already installed or where homeowners prefer physical connections between components.

The best configuration also depends on what’s already in the house. Some properties can use a combination of wired and wireless equipment rather than replacing an existing system completely.

ADT currently offers packages with both professional installation and self-setup options, along with professional monitoring and cellular backup on qualifying plans.

If you’re comparing wired and wireless home security, ADT can evaluate your current setup and provide a customized quote based on the equipment and monitoring your home needs.

Billboard No. 1 Hit, Lasting for Nine Weeks, Was Written in New Zealand by a 15-Year-Old

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 4:46pm

Lorde’s “Royals” became a rare global breakthrough: a song written in New Zealand by a 15-year-old that went on to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stay there for nine weeks.

The song helped introduce Lorde, born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, to a worldwide audience and became one of the defining pop songs of 2013.

According to Rolling Stone, Lorde wrote “Royals” when she was 15. She wrote the song in about half an hour, drawing from her teenage life in New Zealand and her interest in the way pop and hip-hop artists presented wealth, luxury and fame.

The song was written with New Zealand producer and songwriter Joel Little. Together, they created the track during Lorde’s early recording years, when she was still attending school.

The success of “Royals” was not limited to the United States. The song reached No. 1 in several countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom. On the Billboard Hot 100, it became Lorde’s first No. 1 hit.

Billboard’s chart record lists “Royals” as debuting on the Hot 100 in July 2013. It eventually reached the top position in October and spent 44 weeks on the chart.

The story behind “Royals” began with a young Lorde writing lyrics at home.

Rolling Stone described the song as being written “in like half an hour” by a 15-year-old New Zealander. Lorde and Little later recorded it in Auckland during a school break.

The song’s writers are credited as Ella Yelich O’Connor and Joel Little.

Lorde’s inspiration came from several places. One important source was a photograph of baseball player George Brett in a 1976 issue of National Geographic, according to Far Out Magazine. Brett was shown signing baseballs while wearing a shirt with “Royals” written across it.

Lorde later explained the moment to VH1: “It was just that word. It’s really cool.”

That single word became the title of a song that would eventually dominate radio and music charts around the world.

The track also reflected Lorde’s interest in aristocracy and royalty. She had been interested in figures such as Marie Antoinette and Henry VIII, which also influenced the stage name she chose.

But “Royals” was not a song celebrating a life of luxury. Its lyrics questioned the images of expensive cars, jewelry, alcohol and celebrity wealth that often appeared in popular music.

Lorde said she was listening to rap and Lana Del Rey while writing the song. She also looked at the difference between those glamorous images and her own everyday life.

As Lorde explained to The Observer, per Far Out Magazine: “This is our reality! If I write songs about anything else, then I’m not writing anything that’s real.”

“Royals” was first released through Lorde’s The Love Club EP before becoming a major international hit. It was later included on her 2013 debut studio album, Pure Heroine.

The song’s success also brought major awards. At the 2014 Grammy Awards, “Royals” won Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Its influence continued beyond its chart run. The minimalist sound of “Royals” was widely associated with the rise of alternative-leaning pop and later bedroom-pop music. Lorde’s teenage perspective also became an important part of the song’s identity.

Rolling Stone placed “Royals” at No. 30 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in its 2024 edition.

At 15, Lorde had written the words to a song that would become a No. 1 hit. A few years later, “Royals” had become a Grammy-winning international hit and a lasting part of modern pop music history.

'The View' Audience Member Left in Tears After Unexpected Giveaway

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 4:36pm

Live audience members of The View were gifted a surprise on Tuesday.

During the final moments of the daytime talk show’s Season 30 premiere, Whoopi Goldberg made a giveaway announcement as part of their “30 Days of Giveaways” segment.

“There’s nothing more that we love than giveaways on this show,” Goldberg said. “All season long, we’ll be surprising the audience with incredible giveaways, and today is our very first one!”

Sarah Haines said that the giveaway entailed a three-night stay at the Secrets and Dreams Playa Mujeres resorts in Cancun, and Goldberg initially said that the giveaway would be won by only one person in the audience. But instead, the 70-year EGOT winner pulled a card out of the gold box and revealed that everyone seated in the live audience won the vacation. Right after, Goldberg announced a commercial break and the cameras panned to the audience, which showed many jumping out of their seats and screaming for joy. Even one audience member was seen wiping away her tears.

The View is a daytime talk show created by journalist Barbara Walters and producer Bill Geddie that premiered on ABC in 1997. The show was designed around a panel of women from different generations and backgrounds to discuss current events, politics, entertainment and other topics, alongside interviews with celebrities, politicians and newsmakers. Hosts this season include Goldberg, Haines, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Joy Behar, who recently made history as the longest-running female talk show host in America.

Over its nearly three decades on television, the show has also become an influential platform for political and cultural discussion, with its hosts frequently weighing in on major news events and inviting prominent figures to debate them. Now in its 30th season, The View remains one of ABC’s flagship daytime programs and has continued Walters’ original vision of putting different perspectives at the same table.

The View is taped in downtown Manhattan in New York City, and everyone seated in the live audience at the Season 30 premiere was a “superfan” according to Haines. Fans can request free tickets through 1iota, which also allows viewers to request tickets to various talk shows, including Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, as well as seats in award shows, TV and movie premieres, screenings and tapings for sitcoms.

Viewers can watch The View air every weekday at 11 am ET on ABC.

Fall is an easy time to give your bedroom a refresh, and swapping out your bedding can make a big impact without requiring a complete room makeover. That’s where a bed-in-a-bag set can make it especially simple, with comforter, sheet, and pillowcase colors that look pulled together. And coordinated bed-in-a-bag sets don’t have to be boring or overly matchy — some sets use complementary shades across the different pieces, creating a pulled-together look without making every layer identical.

One great example is the Amberspace 7-Piece Bed-in-a-Bag Comforter Set. Right now, the queen-sized deep forest colorway is on sale for 38% off at Walmart, bringing the price down from $90 to just $56. That’s a convenient way to update your entire bed setup at once without having to shop for each piece separately.

The set includes everything you need for a coordinated bed: one comforter, two pillow shams, a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. It’s available in full, queen, oversized queen, king, California king, and oversized king sizes, making it easy to find an option for your particular bed. Just keep in mind that discounts vary depending on the color and size.

There are eight colorways to choose from, including fall-friendly shades like terracotta, oatmeal beige, dark purple, and brown. The comforter and shams come in one shade, while the fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcases feature a complementary color. The result is a layered look that feels coordinated without making every piece the same. Cationic dyeing also helps the colors resist fading, so the bedding can maintain its vibrant appearance through regular use.

Made from 100% polyester, the set has a soft, cloud-like feel that’s designed for comfortable sleeping. The 240 GSM filling gives the comforter a cozy amount of loft without making it feel too heavy, while the breathable and reversible design gives you flexibility as the seasons change. You can use it as a comfortable everyday setup or switch up the look by reversing the comforter.

The bedding is also designed for easy care. It’s machine washable in cold water on a gentle cycle, and you can tumble dry it on low. When it arrives vacuum-packed, simply put it in the dryer on low for 15 to 20 minutes to help restore its fluffy shape. The set is also certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, meaning it has been tested for harmful substances.

One of the most useful details is something you might not expect from a bedding set: built-in storage. The fitted sheet features pockets that give you a convenient spot for small items such as your phone, TV remote, book, or tablet. That’s especially handy if your bedroom is too small for a traditional nightstand, but it can also help keep clutter off your bedside table even if you have one.

With over 100 five-star reviews, shoppers praised the look, quality, and feel of the bedding set. One reviewer described it as “beautiful,” dubbing it the “perfect set” in a five-star review. They added, “I love the color! It’s comfy and soft.”

Another shared, “I really like the sewn in pockets on the bed sheet — they’re small enough to store your TV remote so you don’t lose it while sleeping at night. The comforter is thick enough to keep you warm in colder months and fresh enough for summer months.”

O’Connor began his professional career as a ‘writers’ associate on the ABC soap opera One Life To Live back in 2007. He then worked his way up the writers’ room before becoming headwriter of General Hospital in 2013, and left the soap in 2024. He then had a brief stint working on Days of Our Lives, where he assisted the Peacock soap in various roles before his exit in 2025.

Giddens has a long history with Daytime television, working for the entertainment website and podcast Daytime Confidential for years before making his television writing debut in 2017 with former The Young and the Restless star Victoria Rowell’s series The Rich and the Ruthless. Giddens then went on to create his own primetime series, Ambitions, in 2019, before beginning his Daytime writing career in 2020, working as a breakdown writer on Days of Our Lives.

Giddens then worked on the Peacock spin-off series Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem and, most recently, on CBS’s newest soap opera Beyond The Gates as a breakdown writer.

This fall, Giddens is expected to have worked on brand new material airing on all three soap operas: Beyond the Gates, Days of Our Lives, and, of course, The Young and the Restless.

Viewers can watch brand new episodes of Days of Our Lives weekdays on Peacock. Brand new episodes of Beyond the Gates air weekdays on CBS and stream weeknights on Paramount Plus, where viewers can also catch all of the action from the very beginning.

The Devastating Reason Why the Drummer Left This Post-Punk/New Wave Band  - “It’s Pretty Serious”

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 4:12pm

Stephen Morris has spent nearly five decades behind the drum kit for two of the most influential bands in post-punk and new wave: Joy Division and New Order. His propulsive drumming powered Joy Division’s haunting post-punk classics Unknown Pleasures and Closer, and then drove New Order’s fusion of electronic music and guitar rock on landmark records like Power, Corruption & Lies and Technique. Without Morris behind the kit, there is no “She’s Lost Control,” no “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” no “Blue Monday” – the best-selling 12-inch single in history.

But now, for the first time, the Macclesfield native is quietly acknowledging the health battle that has forced him to step back from the bands he helped build.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, conducted ahead of the release of Joy Division’s landmark 14-disc live box set Eternal (Live), Morris confirmed that a serious illness is preventing him from touring with New Order – and will likely keep him from attending Joy Division and New Order’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November.

“I really don’t want to dwell on what this illness is,” Morris said, “but it’s pretty serious. It’s not something that someone’s going to come up with a cure for.”

While his future with New Order is uncertain, Morris is currently revisiting Joy Division’s past with Eternal (Live), a 14-disc collection arriving Sept. 25. The box set features recordings from 16 Joy Division concerts, including two previously unheard performances, much of it sourced from fan-made bootlegs recorded decades ago.

Morris and his collaborators tracked down rare tapes and painstakingly restored them at Abbey Road Studios. One particularly remarkable discovery was an unlabeled rehearsal cassette that turned out to contain Joy Division performing in 1976. The fragile tape broke during playback, but Morris managed to repair it.

What makes Morris’s situation particularly poignant is his characteristic humor and grace in the face of it. Asked how he stays positive, his answer was pure Stephen Morris: “The alternative isn’t worth considering.”

Eternal (Live) is out September 25.

1970 Country Song, Written by Joe South, Became a Career-Defining No. 1 Hit

Thu, 09/10/2026 - 4:02pm

Lynn Anderson had already been placing songs on the country charts for several years when she recorded the song that would forever define her career. Getting it onto an album, however, required some persistence.

Anderson released “Rose Garden” in 1970, transforming a song written and previously recorded by Joe South into an enormous country-pop crossover hit. The single reached No. 1 on Billboard’s country chart, crossed into the upper reaches of the Hot 100, and gave Anderson her signature recording.

South had written “Rose Garden” several years earlier.

The singer-songwriter, also known for hits including “Games People Play” and “Walk a Mile in My Shoes,” recorded his own version for his 1968 album Introspect. Other artists tackled the composition as well, including Billy Joe Royal and Dobie Gray, before Anderson brought it to Nashville producer Glenn Sutton.

Sutton initially wasn’t convinced it was right for her.

Because the lyrics included lines traditionally associated with a male narrator, he reportedly felt the song should be sung by a man. The lyric, “I could promise you things like big diamond rings,” was one the Sutton, as well as his boss, Billy Sherrill, called into question.

“They thought it was not a line that a woman would say to a man,” Anderson said in a 1990 interview. “Therefore there could not be a female vocal on that particular song.”

Anderson disagreed and continued pushing to record it. She eventually got the opportunity after a recording session left enough time to cut an additional song.

The decision changed her career.

Released in late 1970, “Rose Garden” spent five weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached No. 1 in several countries, turning Anderson into an international star.

“That was just a little bit of magic,” Anderson told Country Universe. “That’s just one of those things that, if you’re lucky, happens once in a lifetime. It had been recorded seven times before I did it, and it wasn’t a hit, but it just simply took off and went out of my hands when we recorded it.”

The song’s polished arrangement helped it move comfortably beyond country radio. Sutton’s production paired Anderson’s vocal with strings and a memorable opening guitar figure, giving South’s clear-eyed lyrics about the realities of love an unexpectedly bright setting.

“Rose Garden” also brought Anderson one of country music’s biggest honors. She won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female, and the song helped establish her as one of the most recognizable country singers of the early 1970s.

Anderson continued recording for decades and scored additional country hits including “How Can I Unlove You,” “You’re My Man,” and “What a Man My Man Is.” None, however, eclipsed the song she had fought to record.

“It was popular because it touched on emotions,” Anderson said years later. “It was perfectly timed. It was out just as we came out of the Vietnam years and a lot of people were trying to recover. This song stated that you can make something out of nothing. You take it and go ahead. It fit me well and I’ll be proud to be connected to it until I die.”

More than five decades later, “Rose Garden” remains inseparable from Anderson’s legacy. A song her producer once questioned became a No. 1 crossover smash and ultimately the recording that defined her career.
