Sharon Stone Almost Starred in This Popular, Long-Running Soap Opera in the ‘70s
While appearing on the May 7 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sharon Stone, 68, spoke about a past audition for a popular soap opera. When she was a teenager working as a model in the ‘70s, she was asked to audition for the role of Laura on General Hospital.
The character, who was originally played by Stacey Baldwin in 1974, was eventually played by Genie Francis in 1977. This was around the time that Stone auditioned for the part. However, she revealed that General Hospital didn’t seem like they knew what they wanted to do with the character at the time.
“They were like, ‘Are we going to knock her off? We going to replace her?’” Stone said. “And they flew me out here. I'd never been to California. And they flew me out here to audition to play Laura.”

She continued, “The lady called me in to discuss my audition, and she was the very old-school type of casting director who had the gigantic beehive and the cat-eye glasses, which were now down on her nose. And she's sitting at the desk, and she made me stand in front of her while she was on the phone. Then finally she got off the phone, and she looked over her glasses at me and said, ‘We'll be sending you back.'”
Stone went on to explain that she had done a lot of commercials back then, but nothing else. She also revealed the strange note that the casting director gave her about her performance. “She went, ‘You have no mystery,' And I was like, ‘Huh?' And I just didn't know what to do with that.”
She continued, “I went home to my roommate, and she was like, ‘What happened?' And I told her, and she went, ‘Baby, you're Technicolor in a black and white world.'”
Kimmel assured Stone that she had “a lot of mystery” and Stone agreed. “I made a career on mystery,” she said.
Stone went on to win a Primetime Emmy Award for The Practice and a Golden Globe Award for Casino. Recently, she’s appeared in hits like Euphoria, Nobody 2, and The Flight Attendant.
The 'Easiest Make-Ahead Breakfast Casserole' Is Perfect for Mother's Day Weekend, 'Chopped' Champion Says
I know so many people who thrive in the kitchen, getting joy and satisfaction from cooking with seasonal ingredients or baking a dessert that's been passed down in their family from generation to generation. And I love this for them. Part of me wishes that I was included in this talented, creative group. Instead, I'm spoiled with a husband who enjoys cooking and I'm able to shine as our designated order-placer (which is a big deal, as fellow Millennials know) when we opt for takeout.
So, when Chef Suzanne Vizethann, Chopped champion, owner and founder of Buttermilk Kitchen, and author of the best-selling cookbook Brunch Season: A Year of Delicious Mornings from the Buttermilk Kitchen, shared a recipe with Parade that she calls the "easiest" make-ahead breakfast casserole, I thought I'd test it out to see just how "easy" it would be for a woman with no culinary skills whatsoever (a friend of mine lovingly refers to my skill level as "below novice").
The dish in question? Baby Vidalia Onion Casserole. It sounds fancy and impressive, which means I was even more intimidated to try it out. But with Chef Vizethann revealing that this brunch dish takes "10–15 minutes to assemble [and] 20 minutes to bake" and only "six to seven ingredients," I rolled up my sleeves with a little more confidence. I even began to imagine that maybe this would become a casserole I'd make again and again—one that my kids would start associating me with throughout the years.
That isn't far off from Chef Vizethann's childhood experience, after all.
"This is a dish we always had on the table growing up, most commonly paired with a steak my dad would grill," she wrote in her cookbook, adding that it's also great with eggs.
So, ahead of Mother's Day weekend, I gave it a try to see if it was truly as easy as she says (and to see if I was about to make this my entirely new personality...maybe I should buy an apron?!). Here's how to make the breakfast casserole yourself, and my honest thoughts on the recipe.

What Makes This Easy Make-Ahead Breakfast Casserole Special?Chef Vizethann tells Parade, "It’s easy to prep ahead, hands‑off to bake and feels special without being complicated—perfect for letting Mom relax while still enjoying something comforting and delicious."
After making it myself, I completely agree that it's a great option for Mother's Day weekend since it's not too complex, and the flavor is incredible.

Ingredients NeededServing eight to 10 individuals, this recipe calls for:
- 1/4 pound bacon, sliced
- 2 pounds baby Vidalia onions, green tops cut off and reserved (you can use regular Vidalia onions if you can’t find baby Vidalias, which is what I did)
- 1/4 stick unsalted butter
- 4 to 5 sprigs whole thyme, plus more for garnish
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 36 whole wheat Ritz crackers, blended in a food processor (we gave my kids a bowl with the crackers in it and a potato masher, and they got the job done just fine)

How To Make Baby Vidalia Onion CasseroleFirst, preheat the oven to 350°. In a large sauté pan, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Then, drain and crumble the bacon.
(For this part, I actually put the bacon in the oven and then poured the bacon fat into a sauté pan after because the last time I tried to cook bacon on the stove, I set off the fire alarm!)

Next, as Chef Vizethann has instructed in her cookbook, "Slice the baby Vidalias in half lengthwise and slice into half-moons." (Remember, I used regular Vidalia onions, but it still worked great!)

Next, she says, "Place in the pan with the bacon fat, add the butter, thyme and cream, and sauté until limp, but not brown."
Season with salt and pepper, as desired, and then remove and discard the thyme sprigs.
(Quick side note: This part smells divine.)

Next, in a casserole dish, Chef Vizethann says to "layer half of the onions, crumbled bacon, cheese and the cracker crumbs. Repeat layers."

She then says, "Bake for 20 minutes, or until lightly browned. Garnish with sliced reserved green tops and fresh thyme sprigs."

Baby Vidalia Onion Casserole Recipe Review: My Honest ThoughtsI'm not going to lie, I was shocked by how flavorful this dish turned out to be—especially without a long list of ingredients. And while I, personally, wouldn't call it the "easiest" recipe (my opinion on "super easy" would probably consist of just dumping things into a pot or pan without any chopping or bacon-making required), it definitely wasn't overly-complicated.
When my husband snuck the first bite, he immediately said, "It's like a really savory onion ring." And that instant-reaction nailed it. The crumbled crackers gave the casserole a really satisfying texture (without being too crunchy like a true onion ring).
You really can't go wrong with heavy cream, cheese and onions—the flavors work so well together and I went back for seconds (and thirds) after the casserole came out of the oven.
I was happy to see that the regular Vidalia onions worked just fine, and Chef Vizethann says that even if you can't find either Baby Vidalia onions or regular Vidalia onions, you can "use any sweet onions."
She also tells Parade, "The bacon is optional, but I think it gives a nice brunch touch." I would absolutely agree. If you're a fan of bacon, I would even suggest using more than the 1/4 pound that the recipe calls for.
Leftovers heat up easily and, echoing Chef Vizethann's comment about how the casserole pairs well with eggs, I'd recommend adding it into a scramble or putting on top of an egg sandwich. It also paired well with mashed potatoes!
I've already raved about this casserole to some mom friends who are eager to try it out as well, and it's a dish I'll 100% be making again.
Maybe I really do need to go buy that apron...

'Summer House's West Wilson Denies Jennifer Fessler Rumors After Ciara Miller Says They 'Slept Together'
Summer Housestar West Wilson and The Real Housewives of New Jersey's Jennifer Fessler are hitting back against Ciara Miller's claim that they slept together.
The rumor started after someone posted on Threads that Page Six had asked Jennifer about the Summer House scandal, and she reportedly gushed that West was a sweet “golden retriever” who didn’t mean to hurt anyone and deserved a break. The Bravo drama began in late March when West and Kyle Cooke’s estranged wife, Amanda Batula, admitted they were in a romantic relationship. At the same time, West and Ciara had recently rekindled their friendship, which appeared to be heading back toward a romance.
Ciara responded to the thread by writing, "lol, because they slept together too." Another commenter replied, “Ma’am! I beg your pardon?!?! Ain’t that old lady married? Oh he got a type,” which prompted Miller to reply, “That’s what I thought….”
The comment went viral, and West posted the viral "math lady" meme on his Instagram story, writing "News to me" along with a crying emoji.
Jennifer, who is married, also denied the rumor, telling Page Six, “It’s flattering that anyone would think someone who slept with Ciara Miller would be interested in sleeping with me.” In April, Jennifer shared a wedding photo with husband Jeff, marking their 27th anniversary, writing, "Happy 27. You could sleep with West or Amanda and I’d still stay!"
Summer House Season 10 is quickly heading toward its finale, setting the stage for what could be one of Bravo’s most explosive reunions yet. Host Andy Cohen called it one of the most “intense” and “emotionally draining” reunions he’s ever conducted. Shortly after his comments, shocking audio leaks from the taping surfaced, with Ciara reportedly heard calling Amanda a “snake,” while Kyle referred to West as a “schmuck.”
Summer House is on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Bravo.
This Hidden Coastal Escape Is the Secret Version of France You’ve Been Dreaming of and Here’s Why
When many people think of visiting France, cities like Paris, Nice, Marseille and Lyon likely come to mind. While these places are popular, dreamy destinations, there’s more to France than these touristy, sought-after cities. That’s why I was thrilled to travel to the Vendée region, a western part of France that’s just a three-hour train ride from Paris.
While under-the-radar for many Americans, the Vendée is where many local French residents and European visitors escape for a quiet getaway and for good reason. For starters, it comprises more than 250 towns and villages so there’s plenty to explore depending on where your travel takes you and what you want to experience. Collectively, the region is teeming with culinary delights, fascinating arts, and breathtaking natural beauty that rivals the more famous French Riviera.
During my six-night stay, I visited a few towns and villages including Challans, La Garnache, l'Île d'Yeu and Les Sables d’Olonne. From eating freshly chucked oysters to riding a bike through winding, rural roads along the coastline, the Vendée region offered a plethora of fun, cultural and enlightening experiences.
Here’s what you can expect if you decide to ditch the tried-and-true France destinations and discover a hidden gem that’s worthy of exploration.

How to Get to the Vendée RegionIf you’re flying from New York City, like me, getting to this western region in France is a cinch. I took a flight from JFK to Paris and then a high-speed train to Challans. You can also travel by plane to reach the destination directly. Since the Vendée is situated on the Atlantic coast of France, between Nantes and La Rochelle, you can fly into those cities where the nearest airports are located. However, keep in mind that there is typically at least one layover in Paris or Amsterdam.

The Best Time to Visit the Vendée RegionIt’s no secret that the term “Euro Summer" is ubiquitous across social media. After all, summer is prime time for tourists to head to European cities for unforgettable stays and understandably so. While the Vendée has an ideal climate throughout the year, June through September is especially attractive for tourists seeking nonstop sunshine. In fact, the region averages 104 days of sunshine per year. I visited the first week in September and the weather ranged in the mid-70s with clear, blue skies. Perfect for outdoor activities and dining al fresco.
Local Markets Galore Courtesy of Karla PopeKarla Pope
If you enjoy visiting open-air markets stocked with the freshest fruits and vegetables while traveling, the Vendée won’t disappoint. Since I visited during the start of autumn, I saw plenty of root vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, and turnips. There are also plenty of local storefronts selling cheese, fresh seafood, and of course, baked goods you can smell a mile away. Exploring markets around the world and discovering new ingredients always inspires me to create dishes influenced by the region.

Fresh Seafood At Every TurnKarla Pope
Speaking of food, over 13,000 tons of shellfish are produced each year in the region. As a proud pescatarian, I was in paradise. In fact, one of my first stops was to Baptiste Raimbaud Oysters, an oyster farm where I ate freshly-chucked oysters straight from the Bay of Bourgneuf. With just a squeeze of lemon, they were the most delicious oysters I’d ever eaten. The seafood utopia didn’t end there. Seafood is the main protein in this part of France. I also visited Conserverie l'Île d'Yeu, a cannery in l'Île d'Yeu where sardines and salmon are smoked to perfection.

A Cyclist’s Dream Courtesy of Karla PopeKarla Pope
No trip to the Vendée region is complete without a scenic bike ride. You’ll blend in with locals, as cycling is a popular mode of transportation in the area. During my visit I took my first e-bike ride through l'Île d'Yeu, where I rode through the charming town where quaint homes dotted the tree-lined streets. The best part of my ride was stopping by the Le Vieux Château, a 14th-century medieval fortress perched atop rocky cliffs. Before approaching the historic monument, I rode along the coastline treating myself to remarkable views of the Atlantic Ocean. With countless bike paths throughout the region, the Vendée is an ideal destination for avid cyclists.
Breathtaking Natural Beauty Courtesy of Karla PopeKarla Pope
The Vendée is such a picturesque part of France, so visitors will be pleased to find natural beauty all around. From nearly 100 miles of golden, sandy beaches to extensive pine forests, the region boasts a diverse landscape that makes it a good choice for travelers who enjoy the great outdoors. Plus, there’s Passage du Gois, the unique 2.6-mile submersible causeway that connects Beauvoir-sur-Mer to the Île de Noirmoutier. Accessible only at low tide, the route disappears beneath the Atlantic twice daily and remains a popular passage for cyclists, tourists and locals alike. It’s truly a sight to see and I was thoroughly amazed when I visited this natural wonder.
Arts, Culture & Shopping Courtesy of Karla PopeKarla Pope
Of course, France is known for its diverse, vibrant art scene and the Vendée upholds that reputation. For starters, the beautiful architecture throughout the region is art in of itself. Outside of that, the area is teeming with arts and cultural activities. During my stay, I visited an art exhibition showcasing female-centered pieces in an old, vacant church in Les Sables d’Olonne. I was hoping to visit the museum devoted to seashells, but I never got the chance. Beyond its arts scene, the destination also boasts lively shopping, from traditional artisan workshops to stylish boutiques. I spotted a colorful top in a window display on my last day but didn’t make it inside before closing. It will always be that one-of-kind piece that got away.
Where to StayDuring my trip, I stayed at two completely different properties. The first few nights, Le Clos du Petit Saint Thomas, in the village of La Garnache, was my home away from home. It’s a charming cottage perfect for large groups. I had a spacious bedroom and private bathroom, plus shared spaces like a living room, kitchen, and a charming backyard that felt straight out of the French countryside. I also stayed at Hotel Vertime, a chic property in the heart of Les Sables d’Olonne with attractive rooftop amenities and ocean views.

Oprah’s Book Club Pick Named Among Novels Readers Devoured in One Weekend
There’s nothing better than spending an entire weekend binging a great book. Readers looking for the perfect novel to dive into over the next two days should look no further than The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese.
BookBub asked its readers to recommend books that “were so good they read them in just one weekend,” and The Covenant of Water earned a spot on the compiled list.
“I just finished The Covenant of Water,” reader Ann-Marie said. “It is a thick book, but I read it quickly; it was fantastic.”
Released in May 2023, the novel follows a Malayali family living in southwest India, with the story spanning three generations from 1900 to 1977. Within each generation, some family members drown due to an affliction they call “the Condition.”
The Covenant of Water became the 101st Oprah’s Book Club selection in May 2023.
“It’s one of the best books I’ve read in my entire life,” Oprah Winfrey said at the time. “It’s epic. It’s transportive. Many moments during the read I had to stop and remember to breathe. I couldn’t put the book down until the very last page. It was unputdownable!”
That same month, Winfrey, 72, explained how she chose The Covenant of Water for her book club.
“We probably read 12 [to] 15 books to get to choose this, and this book was on the list of books to read,” she recalled during a sit-down with Verghese, 70. “It was on my desk, and I kept moving it because [it ’s thick]. I kept moving it over there, then I’d put it over there, then I’d put it under something else, then I’d move it. And then one day we ran out of books and I said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna take a look at that Covenant and see what’s happening in The Covenant of Water.’”
After initially hesitating to begin the book due to its intimidating 700-plus pages, Winfrey was hooked right away.
“I started and I knew by page three,” she said. “The first opening sentence was it for me.”
By the time she was more than halfway done reading the book, Winfrey declared, “I know that the world is gonna love this book.”
The Covenant of Water was partially inspired by Verghese’s mother, who wrote a 157-page history of her childhood in a spiral notebook in 1998 after her granddaughter asked what she was like as a girl. While the author used several of his mother’s stories in his novel, he noted to Oprah Daily, “More precious to me were the mood and voice that came through in her words, which I supplemented with my own recollections of summer holidays with my grandparents in Kerala, and later visits when I was in medical school.”
Beyond The Covenant of Water, BookBub’s list of weekend reads also included The Women by Kristin Hannah, The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters, Christine by Stephen King, Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, among others.
4 Birth Months Who Always See the Best in Everyone
Some people have a natural ability to see the best in others, particularly in moments when it might not be so obvious. Whether it comes from optimism, empathy, or a deep understanding of human nature, this point of view allows them to move through the world with compassion and ease. In astrology, certain birth months are more inclined to carry this energy, reflected in the blend of zodiac signs that show how they connect, communicate, and relate to others. Below are four birth months that naturally see the best in others.
Which birth months are most likely to reveal the best qualities in others?Birth months are listed.
February — The Hopeful VisionaryPeople born in February have a natural ability for seeing the best in others, thanks to this month's highly sensitive, idealistic nature. Made up of humanitarian Aquarius who always strive to make the world a better place and dreamy Pisces who romanticize everything, both signs are visionary dreamers who keep their focus on the future rather than dwelling in the past. This hopefulness, optimism, and forward thinking help them see the bigger picture in all situations and the inherent beauty of the world. Their empathy helps them understand that everyone is going through something and truly trying to do their best, given the circumstances they are in. This level of compassion colors their perspective, allowing them to show others a deeper level of understanding rather than judgment.

April — The Open-Hearted OptimistThose born in April have a natural ability to see the good in others at first glance and stay rooted in it. There’s a sweet childlike innocence to Aries that trusts easily and enthusiastically, while reliable and loyal Taurus brings a loving and devoted energy to their connections. Together, this creates a dynamic that feels both open-hearted and steady, where trust is met with consistency, and people feel safe to be themselves. By focusing on what’s working, they naturally encourage others to lean into their strengths and show up more fully. Because of this, others feel accepted as they are, making it natural for April-born individuals to consistently see the best in everyone.

June — The Compassionate CommunicatorPeople born in June are easily optimistic and bring that positive energy into every situation. With curious, clarity-focused Gemini and sweet, sensitive Cancer, both signs are strong communicators who understand the impact of their words. Geminis can see both sides of any situation with ease, allowing them to understand, forgive, and move forward quickly. Cancer seeks to nurture and create harmony in their relationships. This combination makes them keenly attuned to others’ comfort and more inclined to move with compassion, even when times call for greater patience, tolerance, and perspective. Because of this, they bring an effortless tranquility into their relationships, helping others feel seen, heard, and supported. That sense of emotional safety allows them to consistently see the good in others.
August — The Sunshine SupporterAugust-born individuals have a sunny disposition that naturally brings out the best in others. With radiant, warm-hearted Leo and thoughtful, detail-oriented Virgo, the energy of these two signs is uplifting, generous, and attentive. Leo naturally celebrates others with warmth, encouragement, and enthusiasm, while Virgo is perceptive and insightful, noticing all of the small ways someone puts in effort and shows up. This allows them to see beyond first impressions, noticing both a person’s true qualities and their potential. Because of this, they don’t just see the best in people—they help others see it in themselves.
Seeing the best in others implies choosing to accept people as they are, rather than faulting them for what they haven’t yet learned or experienced. It stems from understanding that everyone is still growing and figuring things out. These birth months embody that perspective, reminding us that how we choose to see people affects the energy of every relationship we maintain. Sometimes, being seen in that light is exactly what allows someone to realize their true potential.

Legendary ‘The Wonder Years’ Star and Emmy-Winning Soap Opera Actress Turns 75
A true sitcom icon, Alley Mills, is officially 75 years old as she celebrates the landmark birthday on May 9. The actress, who has worked in the entertainment industry for six decades now, had fans excited as she marked the personal milestone.
Mills has had an impressive career as an actress, with many interesting roles over the years, but she's arguably most well-known for her role in the legendary sitcom The Wonder Years and her work on soap operas.
She debuted as the character Norma Arnold in the coming-of-age comedy series The Wonder Years in 1988, which established her as a household name in television. The show also starred Dan Lauria as Jack Arnold, Mills' character's husband, with Fred Savage starring as their son Kevin. Olivia d'Abo and Jason Hervey played Kevin's siblings, Karen and Wayne, respectively.
The Wonder Years aired for six seasons between 1988 and 1993, with a total of 115 episodes. The show was an extreme success and is still cited as one of the best sitcoms in history.
While this role on its own was enough for Mills to make her mark in entertainment history, she has gone on to have quite a few other memorable roles as well after The Wonder Years came to an end.
Related: A Divisive Romance Novel Is the Most-Read Classic on Goodreads in 2026
In particular, she gained a whole new group of fans when she joined The Bold and the Beautiful in 2006 as the character Pamela Douglas. She has appeared on the show sporadically since then, becoming a part of the soap opera's recurring cast and its lasting legacy.
But surprisingly, after over 15 years of working on The Bold and the Beautiful, it was another major soap opera role that ended up earning Mills multiple Daytime Emmys for her performance, and that was the role of Heather Webber on General Hospital. She joined the show in 2022, and her acting led her to win the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series in both 2023 and 2025.
Along with The Wonder Years and well-known soap operas, Mills has also appeared in many prominent shows and films over the decades. Just a few of these include Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, NYPD Blue, Girlfriends, and more.

'90s Country Legend Jo Dee Messina Surprises American Idol Contestant Singing Her Hit Song - Reaction Is Priceless
Sometimes the best moments in life are the unexpected ones that nobody sees coming. The ones so unthinkable and unplausable that we can’t even fathom the daydream of the possibility. And, that’s exactly what happened.
Hannah Harper was performing "Heads Carolina, Tails California" on American Idol — the '90s country anthem that made Jo Dee Messina a household name — when suddenly, something absolutely magical unfolded in real time.
@jodeemessinaLoved this so much! Be sure to tune in to @AmericanIdol on Monday to watch me surprise @hannahharperofficial in her hometown 💜 #americanidol #hannahharper #jodeemessina
♬ original sound - Jo Dee MessinaThe legend, Messina herself, walked onstage.
The stunned look on Harper's face said absoutely everything you need to know. Her jaw dropped immediately. Her eyes went big and wide. And, then the tears started.
"Loved this so much!" Messina posted on TikTok, teasing fans to tune into Monday's episode. "Be sure to tune in to American Idol on Monday to watch me surprise Hannah Harper in her hometown."

The video shows the exact moment Harper realizes her idol is standing right there in front of her, and it's the kind of genuine reaction you cannot fake. One fan perfectly captured the moment: "Her flabbers were gasted."
What makes the moment even more special? That appears to be Harper's dad playing guitar behind her, his face beaming with pride as he watches his daughter meet one of her heroes.
"Her dad! That smile is decades of knowing his baby girl's heart and watching her run after her dreams," one fan wrote. "How cool to share that moment together!!"
The song choice couldn't have been more perfect. "Heads Carolina, Tails California" was Messina's 1996 breakthrough hit, reaching number two on the country charts. Impressively, thirty years later, a new generation of fans still knows every single word.
Why Jo Dee Messina's Surprise Represents Everything Right About Country MusicFans couldn't stop talking about how authentic the magical moment felt.
"Hannah's reaction just makes me wanna cry. She's so genuine," one fan commented.
"I could watch this a million times, just the coolest thing ever!!! Only you Jo Dee!!!!!!!!!"

That comment gets at something important about Messina's overall appeal. She's built a career not just on incredible and undeniable talent, but on being terrifically and authentically herself — kind, humble, and genuinely excited to lift up other artists. This is why fans so deeply connect with her music.
"I absolutely love you Hannah Harper and it shows just the kind of person Jo Dee Messina is," a fan wrote.
This isn't Messina's first time supporting new and emerging talent. Messina's experienced a career resurgence lately, connecting with new fans and reconnecting with true fans through TikTok and surprise performances, proving authentic talent never goes out of style.
For Harper, navigating the high-pressure world of American Idol, having one of her musical heroes show up and validate her talent must feel like confirmation she's on the right path.
The surprise happened in Harper's hometown, which adds even a deeper layer of meaning to the situation. This is where she grew up dreaming of making it in country music, probably listening to "Heads Carolina" on repeat, never imagining the woman who sang it would one day walk onstage while she performed it.
Sometimes, dreams don't just come true — sometimes, they show up on stage to surprise you and make everything that much better.
The full surprise airs Monday on American Idol, and it's going to be one of those moments people talk about all season.
Here's What You'll Need to Be Considered 'Upper Class' In Retirement
Retiring in the group considered “Upper Class” is less about a number and more about your lifestyle. While the threshold for that class bracket tends to sit around $1.5 million, retiring well has a variety of factors, including lifespan, location, habits, and more.
✨ Parade's daily newsletter has all the info you need for retirement planning and more ✨
Ready to RetireYou worked your entire life and are now wondering if you have not only the funds to retire, but to retire well. Retiring well means different things for different people. Are you a jet setter who wants to continue to travel throughout your golden years? Or are you focused more on slow living surrounded by nature?
Whatever your plans are, you should consider the 4% rule for your long-term retirement. This rule states that your funds can withstand a 4% annual withdrawal, adjusted for inflation, for long retirements (ie, living well into your 90s)
It looks something like this:
- A $100,000/year lifestyle requires $2.5 million
- A $150,000/year lifestyle requires $3.75 million
- $200,000/year lifestyles require $5 million
While these are approximate totals, they’re pretty close to what you’ll actually need to be able to live the way you want.
Related: Americans Are Terrified of This Retirement Issue More Than Death
Other FactorsLocation plays a huge role in how much money you’ll need to maintain your lifestyle. Low-cost-of-living areas like the South and the rural Midwest tend to require less funding to live comfortably, while places like the California coast will require more.
The cost of living in highly desirable locations like Los Angeles is notably higher than in a small town a few hours away from Columbus, Ohio. Neither option is bad, but your personal preference will determine how comfortably you’ll be able to live without an additional income.
Related: This 'Lazy' Habit Can Add a 20% Bonus to Your Retirement
Smart MovesYou may think that reaching the $5 million benchmark isn’t achievable, but it’s more about strategy than luck. Working with a financial advisor early can help you build a sizable nest egg. If your current income allows you room to play with investments, a financial advisor is a necessity, not a luxury.
An advisor does more than manage investments. They’ll look at your assets and habits to help you assess exactly what you’ll need to contribute and the moves you’ll need to make to have a comfortable retirement. Is your house paid off? Do you travel several times a year? What will your healthcare needs be in the long term?
Retiring in the top 20% may only require hitting a benchmark of $1.5 million in the bank, but outside factors will determine your comfort way more than your bottom line.

These Are the 10 Least Reliable States for Senior Healthcare Access
Many people already know that it's important to have easy access to healthcare. And while there are several stages in your life where that seems like a bigger priority—when I was a new mom, I took great comfort in knowing that we had an emergency room within five minutes of our home—seniors typically require a more robust healthcare team as they age.
That's because this is when you're likely to need to see more than just your primary care physician, whether for your annual exam or when you have a cold. But when people decide where to move in retirement, they often forget to consider how easy it will be to get in to see their doctor, which is why I asked several pros which states are the worst for senior healthcare access. Keep reading to see if your favorite retirement destination made the list.
Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Colorado, and AlaskaWhile many retirees flock to the South in search of warmer weather, there are those who miss the changing seasons and instead opt to head somewhere that they can experience it all... including snowy weather. But that snow can present a physical barrier to seniors who are looking to see their doctor, which is exactly why Jordana Masserman, owner of the Tucson branch of Preferred Care At Home, says it can be hard to access healthcare here.
And while Masserman says that those who can easily get around in slick conditions may be fine, "seniors with mobility challenges may not want to move north where ice and snow are more common."

Mississippi, West Virginia, and OklahomaWhile Masserman's concern was more about seniors physically being able to get to the doctor's office, Yahya Khan, Founder and Medical Billing Specialist at AMRG, says seniors living in Mississippi, West Virginia, and Oklahoma may struggle to find a doctor once they arrive at the office.
"As per my knowledge, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Oklahoma consistently rank among the worst states for senior healthcare, struggling with physician shortages, high uninsured rates, and chronic disease prevalence," he says. "WalletHub's 2025 rankings confirm that Mississippi scored lowest overall at 43.15 out of 100, followed by Alaska, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas."
However, Rene Hermes, CPPM and Chief of Operations at Hermes Health, says that West Virginia deserves a spot on this list for more than just a shortage of doctors. "As a healthcare executive, the reports I see confirm that West Virginia is consistently ranked as last in the U.S. for access to healthcare for seniors," he says, noting that one of the reasons is that many people live in more remote mountain areas here, putting them hours away from the nearest medical facility.
Related: These Are the 3 Worst Southern Cities for Retirement
Kentucky and GeorgiaLastly, Hermes says that Kentucky and Georgia belong on the list due to the high rates of seniors living in poverty who cannot afford to go to the doctors. So, what's the solution if you're already living in one of these states or otherwise committed to retiring here? Prevention.
“Lifestyle habits such as eating a healthy diet as well as daily exercising and stretching can help seniors stay independent as long as possible," Hermes says. "If transportation to medical clinics is a problem, check with rural community services that offer homebound care. Some areas also offer concierge services, which include physician house calls, Telehealth, and text messaging."

1981 Infectious Hit Catapulted Juice Newton to Country-Pop Stardom—But Slipped Past Two Music Icons
In 1981, Juice Newton scored a career-defining hit that quietly slipped past two music icons to become her biggest hit.
"Queen of Hearts" was an infectious, country-pop song that hit all the right notes with listeners, who catapulted the song to No. 2 on the Billboard charts. The song blended pop sensibility with a touch of country twang and just enough mainstream energy to appeal to a wide range of listeners.
According to American Songwriter, the tune was written by Hank DeVito, a pedal steel guitar player for Emmylou Harris’ band. Reportedly, Harris passed on the song.
Then, "Queen of Hearts" was given to Dave Edmunds to record. Edmunds, who would have a hit with "I Hear You Knockin'" in 1970, put his own spin on the tune, releasing it in the UK in 1979, where it charted just shy of the Top 10. However, the song never became a hit in the United States.

That was good news for Newton, who released her version two years after Edmunds, in 1981. The song would go on to become a blockbuster hit for the artist, falling short of the No. 1 spot held strong by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's ballad "Endless Love."
Newton included the song on her LP Juice. The album would send three songs into the Top 10, including "Queen of Hearts," "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known) and "Angel of The Morning."

In a 2011 interview with Review Magazine, the singer discussed her collaboration with Richard Landis, producer of her breakthrough hits and her Juice LP. She credited Landis with helping turn the project into the career-defining moment that followed.
"I believe that hooking up with Richard Landis, who produced those first big hits on the Juice LP was my lucky break. I actually think that the timing was just so lucky as we were both available at the same time, that doesn’t always happen."

She continued, "We sort of interviewed each other and did a few demos to see if we really liked the way we worked together in the studio. I consider that excellent timing."
Newton concluded, "I try to pick songs that I really like that speak to me. If I didn’t write them, I chose them because they speak to me as an interpreter."
"And I think that’s the key. If you pick or write those types of songs, it just translates into your energy level and your commitment, and if you really love performing, then it works its way to the surface."
Juice Newton retired from touring in 2021. She lives in San Diego, California.

Why Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Chris Hemsworth Think Stem Cell Therapy Could Be the Future of Pain Relief
Stem cell therapy is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest wellness obsessions, with celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Chris Hemsworth, Tony Robbins, and more publicly sharing their experiences with regenerative medicine specialist Dr. Adeel Khan.
For Kylie, the treatment came after years of struggling with chronic pain following the birth of her son, Aire.
“Nothing I tried seemed to help,” Kylie shared on Instagram, revealing she underwent stem cell therapy after giving birth, which left her with bad chronic back pain for almost three years. “I’m honestly so grateful for the opportunity and resources. Everybody’s body is different, but this has been a huge step in my healing.”
View this post on InstagramShe also encouraged followers to proceed carefully before pursuing similar treatment.
“Definitely do your research... talk to your doctor and medical professionals, but I just wanted to share in case this helps anyone,” she added.
Kylie says she was inspired to visit Dr. Khan after her sister, Kim, and Khloe Kardashian publicly documented their own stem cell treatments with Dr. Khan in recent months.
Kim revealed she sought treatment for a torn shoulder and “chronic back pain,” later saying the “results were immediate.”
“I can’t recommend this treatment enough,” Kim shared on Instagram. “It’s transformed my life when I thought my body was breaking down.”
Khloe also said the treatment helped with “recovery, inflammation and overall wellness” tied to her intense workout routine.
“My dream is that one day treatments like this will be accessible and affordable to everyone, everywhere,” Khloe wrote on Instagram. “I know what a privilege this treatment is and I feel so incredibly blessed we were able to receive it and with such great care.”
The growing celebrity interest in stem cell therapy has extended beyond the Kardashian-Jenner family. Actor Chris Hemsworth recently appeared alongside Dr. Khan on social media, while motivational speaker Tony Robbins has also publicly endorsed regenerative medicine treatments through the doctor’s clinic.
View this post on Instagram“Really enjoyed meeting Dr. Adeel Khan,” Chris said via an Instagram post shared on Dr. Khan’s platform. “His work with MUSE cells — an incredible type of regenerative stem cell, is unique. The fact that he directly collaborates with Professor Mari Dezawa, who pioneered these cells, made me feel confident that I was in the hands of someone at the very forefront of regenerative medicine.”
As more celebrities openly discuss chronic pain, recovery, longevity, and anti-aging treatments, stem cell therapy has increasingly moved from niche medical circles into mainstream celebrity wellness culture.
Dr. Khan’s clinic, Eterna Health, has locations in Florida, Dubai, Mexico, and Canada.

4 Birth Dates Who Become Unapologetically Authentic With Age
According to the Yale School of Public Health, experts are challenging the notion that aging leads to decline. Studies have found that nearly half of adults aged 65 and older showed measurable improvements in cognitive and physical function over time, largely due to their positive outlook on aging.
Those who perceive the passage of time as an opportunity to gain more wisdom, grace, and self-respect can thrive and discover new meaning in their lives. Further, expert numerologists and astrologers note which four birth dates are most likely to become more authentic in their self-expression with age, no longer apologizing for their true, innermost selves. Read on for cosmic insight.
Which Birth Dates Become More Authentic (and Stop Apologizing) With Age?Check for your birth date. Disregard birth months.
Born on the 8th - Trusting Your TimingPeople born on the 8th are most likely to transform self-doubt into empowerment over time. Their early life journey is often filled with restrictions, instilling in them a strong work ethic. However, they also carry unconscious fears of losing everything or feeling unworthy of progress. Ruled by the planet of karmic maturity, Saturn, their inner critic tends to become less intense. They begin to walk with more authority, gaining wisdom and self-trust along the way. During their youth, they may be shy, but as they grow older, they become less affected by outside opinions. As late bloomers, they have found that all they needed was self-trust to make things happen.
Born on the 14th - Finding Your VoiceMercury, the planet of communication and self-expression, governs this birth date. People born on the 14th tend to have mentally agile and active minds. As a result, they benefit from thinking quickly on their feet but can also struggle with patterns of overthinking. In their youth, they may hesitate to express their true thoughts. However, as they mature, they discover their voice, embrace true self-expression, and gain a clearer understanding of their own sharp thoughts. They begin to articulate what they mean and mean what they say, refusing to let outsiders dictate what they should believe.
FUN: The 4 Birth Dates Who Shop Until They Drop
Born on the 20th - Trusting Your IntuitionThose born on the 20th are ruled by the Moon, which symbolizes our inner world and emotional nuances. People with this birth date often have heightened intuition, making them quite sensitive to others and their environment. In their younger years, they may be timid and prioritize predictability for emotional safety. However, as they grow older, they begin to feel more secure within themselves. Time is the greatest healer, and as they improve their emotional regulation skills, they stop shrinking themselves and fearing visibility, allowing them to embrace who they truly are.
RELATE?: Your Dream Home Aesthetic, Based on Your Birth Month
Born on the 28th - Stepping Into Your IdentityThe Sun, the luminary of core identity and ego, rules this birthday. During their earlier journey, individuals often dim themselves to fit in, as others make them feel "too much" when they are being their fiery selves. They may begin to seek validation or ego boosts from others. However, as they age, it becomes clear to them that finding authenticity is far more important than being liked. Their unapologetic presence allows them to shine brightly and take up the space that has always been rightfully theirs.

1987 Classic Ranked Among ‘Greatest Albums of All Time’ Gets Unexpected New Honor
When Guns N' Roses released Appetite for Destruction in 1987, the album didn’t arrive with instant blockbuster success. But over time, the gritty hard rock record transformed into one of the defining albums of its era—and now it’s receiving a major new honor decades later.
In April 2026, Barnes & Noble selected Appetite for Destruction as its Album of the Month, spotlighting the record alongside other featured monthly picks. In an Instagram post, the retailer called attention to the album while encouraging fans to revisit the classic release.
The recognition adds another accolade to an album that has already spent decades near the top of “greatest ever” conversations. Rolling Stone ranked Appetite for Destruction at No. 62 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, writing that it "hit the metal scene like an asteroid."
The publication praised the record for bringing “the grit and fury of Seventies rock back to a mainstream hard-rock scene that was starved for something real,” while highlighting the chemistry between vocalist Axl Rose, guitarist Slash and the rest of the band. Rolling Stone also pointed to songs like “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Paradise City” as proof that Guns N’ Roses “left all other Eighties metal bands in the dust.”
Released on July 21, 1987, Appetite for Destruction initially struggled to gain traction. It wasn’t until MTV began airing the video for “Welcome to the Jungle” and radio embraced songs like “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Paradise City” that the album exploded into the mainstream.
The record eventually climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went on to become the best-selling debut album in U.S. history. More than 30 million copies have been sold worldwide, and the album remains one of the defining rock releases of the 1980s.
Over the years, Appetite for Destruction has continued to appear on countless “greatest albums” lists while influencing generations of hard rock bands. Nearly four decades after its release, the album’s latest recognition suggests its reputation is still very much alive—and still loud enough to shake the walls.
1972 One-Hit Wonder Started as an Advertising Jingle — and Became an Anthem That Defined an Era
In the early 1970s, the song “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)” was everywhere. Written by Bill Backer, Billy Davis, Roger Cook, and Roger Greenaway, the song was originally created for a Coca-Cola commercial jingle, and was first performed by the New Seekers for the 1971 ad.
But amid the ad campaign’s success, an alternate version of the song by the Hillside Singers was quickly released as a single, hitting No. 13 on the Billboard charts and making the studio-assembled group a one-hit wonder, according to Songfacts. The New Seekers promptly followed up with a full-length recording of the song and hit No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in early 1972. The song reached No. 1 on the UK singles chart.
“I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” was a song about universal peace and harmony. The famous Coca-Cola ad, titled "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke," was meant to inspire "unity and happiness," per the Coca-Cola website. The company noted that more than 50 years later, the song and the campaign have “a lasting connection with the public.” “The commercial has consistently been voted one of the best of all time, and the sheet music continues to sell today,” the beverage company shared.
The famous song went straight to radio—as a commercialBritish songwriter Roger Greenaway opened up about the process of creating the song in an interview with Billboard. He revealed that the song was originally titled “True Love and Apple Pie." But co-writer Bill Davis didn’t think the lyrics were suitable for the Coke campaign.
Per the Coca-Cola website, Davis reportedly said, "Well, if I could do something for everybody in the world, it would not be to buy them a Coke. …I'd buy everyone a home first and share with them in peace and love.”
Greenaway revealed that the song was then rewritten as “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” in about six hours.
“After we finished the recording sessions, the commercial went straight to radio — not to TV,” Greenaway recalled to Billboard, noting that the radio ad didn’t get a lot of attention at first. “It wasn’t until a man called Harvey Gabor, who worked in the TV commercial area at McCann, had the idea of filming a group of young men and women of different nationalities and backgrounds standing on a hill with a bottle of Coke in their hand and used ‘Teach the World’ as the anthem that the song took off.”
RELATED: 1976 No. 1 Hit Song Was So Good, a TV Show Was Renamed Before It Was Released
A massive hitIn an essay for Songwriting magazine, Greenaway said everything changed after the TV commercial aired with the singers on the hill.
“The commercial went on air, and within a week of it being on television throughout America, the main office of The Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta had received in excess of 10,000 letters from the public, asking where they might find copies of the music. So they knew they had something special,” he said.
“Billy Davis took [the New Seekers] into the studios one afternoon, to produce the single that went to the top of the charts,” the songwriter added. “Within two nights of it being on television here [in the UK], we were selling 150,000 records a day. It went to No. 1 at Christmas, and it sold a million copies in less than 10 days!”
Could These Be Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding Songs? Experts and Swifties Weigh In
Taylor Swift has spent her career turning real-life moments into music. So when it comes to her upcoming wedding, the first dance with Travis Kelce might not come from a playlist at all.
“As a wedding DJ, the first dance is always the moment where the couple shares their love story,” says Dominic Fournier, co-founder of The Wedding Duo. “My honest prediction is that Taylor wouldn’t just choose a song. She would probably write one specifically for that moment.”
It's an idea that feels entirely on-brand.
“Artists like Taylor tend to mark big chapters of their lives with music, and a wedding would be the ultimate chapter,” Fournier adds. “I could absolutely see her debuting a brand new track during their first dance. Something stripped down, romantic and very storytelling-driven. Probably piano or acoustic guitar, lyrics about timing, fate and how their worlds unexpectedly collided. It would feel intimate, almost like the room is getting a private performance.”
For a couple whose relationship has unfolded so publicly, that kind of grand gesture makes perfect sense.
What Taylor Swift Might Walk Down the Aisle ToBefore the first dance or the party even begins, the most emotional moment may come when Swift walks down the aisle. For some fans, that moment calls for something soft and cinematic.
“Walking down the aisle: ‘Wildest Dreams’ (Taylor Swift cover by Duomo) from the Bridgerton soundtrack,” says longtime Swiftie and author Lindsey Smith, pointing to the orchestral version as a natural fit for a ceremony.
Others imagine something more classic from her catalog.
“Enchanted” is another popular pick, says longtime Swift fan Kristin McClement. Its sweeping, romantic tone and lyrics feel "Taylor-made" for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Whether she chooses something instrumental, nostalgic or pulled directly from her own music, the tone is likely to feel intimate and reflective—a quiet pause before the rest of the celebration unfolds.

If Swift pulls from her existing catalog, fans have plenty of opinions about which song would fit the moment.
“You Are in Love,” says Smith. “It’s no surprise that Travis is a 1989 stan and I think the song ‘You Are in Love’ from the 1989 album sets the perfect scene of being in love (true love) and has the perfect cadence for a first dance song.”
For others, the answer leans quieter.
“Sweet Nothing,” suggests McClement, pointing to the song’s intimacy and message of choosing each other amid everything else.
Walker Thomas—a recently self-proclaimed Swiftie—sees it as something even more emotional. He imagines a moment that feels less like a performance and more like a reflection of their relationship, something soft, romantic and a little bit cinematic.
Not everyone is convinced she’ll go that route, though.
“‘Lover’ is one of the most popular first dance songs right now, but I don’t expect Taylor to dance to her own music,” says Zoe Burke, wedding expert and head of brand at Bridebook.
Instead, Burke imagines something more timeless. "I think she’d go for a classic, inspired by ’90s rom-coms,” she says. “Something like Etta James’ ‘At Last’ or ‘L.O.V.E.’ by Nat King Cole would work beautifully.”
That mix of possibilities—something deeply personal, something from her own catalog or something entirely classic—is part of what makes the moment so hard to predict.
The Taylor Swift Lyrics That Already Tell Their StoryPart of the reason Swift’s music works so well for weddings is that so many of her songs already feel like chapters of a love story.
“Taylor has told us from the very beginning what she wants: a whimsical love story,” Smith says.
And for fans, certain lyrics stand out as especially fitting. “'Cause you can hear it in the silence / You can feel it on the way home / You can see it with the lights out / You are in love, true love,” Smith says, quoting from “You Are in Love.”
For McClement, it’s a softer ballad such as "Sweet Nothing" that she expects to be played. “They said the end is coming. Everyone is up to something. I find myself running home to your sweet nothings… All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing.”
It’s that balance—between big, sweeping emotion and something more intimate—that makes her catalog feel so tied to real-life milestones.
How the Reception Playlist Might EvolveBeyond the first dance, the music will likely evolve throughout the evening.
“I think it will be a story arc of all of these vibes,” McClement says. That means softer, more romantic tracks during the ceremony and dinner, followed by something higher-energy once the party starts.
“Shake It Off” is an obvious contender for getting people on the dance floor, Smith says, while songs like “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me” have become wedding staples for a reason.
Burke agrees the playlist will likely balance romance with crowd-pleasers.
“For the party playlist, we can expect a mix of whimsical, romantic songs, and big crowd-pleasers designed to fill the dance floor,” she says.
And knowing Kelce’s personality, that high-energy side may play an even bigger role.
Travis Kelce's big personality will most definitely be seen on the dance floor at the reception!Photo by Kansas City Star on Getty Images
How Travis Kelce Could Shape the PartyWhile Swift’s music will likely anchor the emotional moments, Kelce’s presence could shift the tone once the reception is in full swing.
Smith points out that Kelce has already shown his appreciation for Swift’s catalog, noting he's a “1989" stan.
But beyond that, fans expect a playlist that leans into bigger, more playful energy as the night goes on.
Burke notes that the couple are fans of The Darkness, hinting that the playlist could include a few unexpected throwbacks alongside more traditional wedding hits.
The result is likely a mix that feels balanced—part romance, part full-on celebration.

Could Ed Sheeran or Other Stars Perform at the Wedding? Taylor Swift and Carole King in 2021Photo by Kevin Mazur on Getty Images
Of course, when the bride is one of the biggest musicians in the world, the playlist isn’t the only thing people are thinking about.
There’s also the possibility that the music doesn’t just come from a DJ.
Swift has built close relationships with a number of artists over the years, from longtime collaborator Ed Sheeran to producer Jack Antonoffand The National’s Aaron Dessner, all of whom have played key roles in shaping her sound. She's also reportedly close with Stevie Nicks, Carole King and Lana Del Rey.
If any of them were in the room, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a more spontaneous moment unfolding, whether that’s a stripped-back performance, a surprise duet or even an acoustic set that feels more like a private concert than a wedding reception.
There’s precedent for it, too. Celebrity weddings have increasingly blurred the line between performance and celebration, with close friends stepping in for moments that feel personal rather than staged.
And for an artist like Swift, whose relationships are so closely tied to her music, that kind of magic feels almost inevitable.
Related: Taylor Swift’s Famous Friend Hints at Wedding Date Leaving Fans Scratching Their Heads
The Last Song Might Say It AllIf the first dance sets the tone, the final song is what people leave with. For some fans, that moment belongs to “Karma.”
“Karma,” Smith says, noting that it feels like a fitting nod to how Swift’s Eras Tour ended—the same tour that played a role in the early days of their relationship.
Others point to “Long Live,” a song that captures the feeling of holding onto a moment you don’t want to end.
Either way, the final track is likely to feel less like a performance and more like a shared moment.
Could Taylor Drop a Surprise Song at the Wedding?Of course, there’s always the possibility that none of these predictions are right. Fans have speculated everything from a surprise duet to a completely new song debuting mid-reception.
“I think Swifties would lose their minds if Taylor either created a special song just for her wedding day, or if she and Travis did a fun duet on the dance floor,” Smith says.
“People would go absolutely wild if she dropped a surprise album or changed lyrics to fit the moment,” Thomas says. “She’s known for Easter eggs, so it would make sense for her to do something unexpected like that.”
It’s a different kind of possibility, but for an artist who has built her career on surprise reveals and hidden meaning, it wouldn’t be entirely out of character.

The Rise of 'Grandma Tourism': Why Travelers are Trading Landmarks for Traditions
What started as a nostalgic social media trend—the "grandmacore" aesthetic now boasts over 251 million views on TikTok—has evolved into a significant cultural movement. Travelers are increasingly choosing to trade digital algorithms for human connection, redefining how a younger generation engages with global culture. This shift has birthed a new travel behavior: "Grandma Tourism."
According to a new report from GetYourGuide, the leading global marketplace for travel experiences, "Grandma Tourism" describes a growing preference for experiences led by older local guides who share traditional skills, cultural heritage and personal narratives. The data signals a clear move away from passive sightseeing toward active participation.
Tradition Over Trends: The DataThe shift is already visible in booking behavior. On GetYourGuide, bookings for workshops and classes grew by more than 250% between 2023 and 2025, growing six times faster than traditional attraction tickets. Furthermore, the report finds that:
- 69% of travelers prefer learning from older local guides over younger guides.
- 76% of travelers would book a “grandma-inspired” experience.
- 94% of travelers want to experience a “grandma” mindset—focused on calm and connection—when they travel.
“Travel isn’t just turning up and ticking boxes anymore, it’s about learning something meaningful about a place from the people who know it best," says Johannes Reck, Co-Founder of GetYourGuide. "As our lives become increasingly digitalised, travellers are seeking moments to slow down, reconnect and engage with culture passed down through generations in a more human way."
Nonna Rosella: The Art of the Shared Moment (Rome, Italy)GetYourGuide
In a home just outside the bustling streets of Rome, 68-year-old Rosella—known to her guests as Nonna Rosella—hosts pasta-making classes that are about much more than flour and eggs.
“I teach people how to make real Italian pasta," says Rosella. "People come to my tour because they want to make something with their hands from scratch, but also to spend time with an Italian grandma and hear my stories.”
For Rosella, hosting is a way to bridge the gap between her quiet city life and her roots in the Roman countryside. “I come from a very small village in the Roman countryside," she explains. "When I got married, I moved to Rome and used to spend a lot of time at home alone. I’ve always missed my village and now I meet people from all over the world and share what I learned growing up in my village.”
The connection often becomes deeply personal. “Guests can be shy at first. But when they leave, they’re so open and warm! They hug me and want to spend more time with me," Rosella shares. "If I accepted all the invitations I get from people all over the world, I’d never stay in Italy anymore! This is what matters in the end, the relationships we create.”
Ultimately, her goal is for guests to take the spirit of the kitchen home with them. “I don’t just want to teach the new generations how to make pasta, but also remind them how important it is to share moments together and surround themselves with people they love. I want them to use these pasta-making skills to spend time with their loved ones.”

In the shadow of the Basilique Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre, 63-year-old Catherine teaches the delicate art of macarons at L’Atelier de Mamies. For Catherine, a former HR professional, the atelier is a place for "un-curated" authenticity.
“I’m retired, so I teach because I want to," Catherine says. "Before, I worked in HR, managing a team of 20 people! Now, I work just a few days a week. It’s about connecting with the people, sharing my love of pastry and showing the France of French people, not a fantasy.”
The GetYourGuide report notes that 84% of travelers in the French market would book a grandma experience, the highest across all markets surveyed. Catherine sees this desire for connection daily. “The atelier is in a really beautiful part of Paris near Basilique Sacré-Coeur, and there’s always a wow moment when people arrive. But I also think they choose it because it’s not intimidating," she notes. "Macarons seem a little technical, but anyone can learn if they keep trying.”
She finds particular joy in teaching the youngest travelers. “I love teaching children and we welcome kids as young as three or four. Because the recipes are simple enough, the little ones are so happy to make cookies just like their parents can. The parents always say the kids never would have eaten macarons from a patisserie!”
Catherine’s mission is to provide a souvenir that isn't found in a gift shop. “I wanted to give people a wonderful memory of Paris. Not something bought, but a skill, a little piece of Parisian tradition they could take home with them from their vacation. My guests leave feeling confident they can recreate a French recipe at home. Paris is the most beautiful city in the world and we Parisians don’t even realise it because we're too busy complaining.”
Isidora & Puri: Love Language on a Spanish Farm (Málaga, Spain)GetYourGuide
In rural Málaga, 83-year-old Isidora and her sister-in-law, Puri, host a farm-to-table experience that serves as a masterclass in "slow living."
“Food is my love language," Isidora says. "My whole life was about raising four kids and preparing delicious meals for them. Making everything from scratch and creating something tasty from basic, available products.”
For Isidora, the experience is a way to travel the world from her own kitchen. “I worked for a short period of time, but my life experience was really about taking care of my family at home. Now, we love meeting new people and exchanging stories and recipes. It is always nice to hear about each country's customs. With our age, it is more difficult to travel abroad, so the abroad comes to us!”
The appeal, she believes, lies in the honesty of the encounter. “Perhaps because it’s honest. We don’t sell them a tour, we share our real life: the beauty of rural Málaga, freshly pressed olive oil from the farm, citrus trees, and food. Sharing simple and meaningful moments.”
Isidora hopes her guests leave with a renewed appreciation for the elderly and the "analogue" life. “I hope they take away respect for older people, their cooking methods and their food. The world is changing to make everything more convenient, but there is real beauty in preparing a meal from scratch, spending time with loved ones and using ingredients that matter."
She leaves her guests with a piece of wisdom that echoes the findings of the GetYourGuide report: “Money comes and goes, even for the richest, but real happiness comes from family and the people you surround yourself with. When you are old, that’s all that matters: the people who want to spend time with you. Our advice is to create memories together, don't just buy another object.”
The "Why" Behind the TrendWhy are we so obsessed with learning from elders now? The GetYourGuide report suggests a direct link to digital fatigue. Consumers are taking up "analogue" hobbies to:
- Feel calm (67%)
- Get time away from their phones (53%)
- Learn a tangible skill (51%)
- Reduce anxiety (48%)
Whether it's mastering the fold of a musubi in Tokyo or playing a high-stakes card game with a 94-year-old in Istanbul, "Grandma Tourism" offers a structural shift in how we spend our time—moving from seeing a place to truly belonging to it, if only for an afternoon.
Sam's Club Just Made Mornings So Much Better With These Soft and Buttery $6 Scones
Sam's Club is elevating the breakfast game with a new item that's bound to make mornings so much better.
If your mornings have been feeling a little rushed or repetitive lately, the warehouse giant may have just delivered the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy breakfast again
The new Member’s Mark Cinnamon Chip Iced Scones have been recently spotted in various locations in the bakery aisle.
Whether you're rushing out the door or settling in for a slow weekend morning, these scones are making a strong case for skipping the coffee shop line.
Scones have been a morning go-to for centuries, rooted in British and Scottish culinary tradition, with the first scone believed to originate in Scotland in the early 1500s. Simple, quick, and filling, they're a natural fit when you want to start the day with something hearty.
Sam's Club has now made it even easier, as you can reach for a box and throw it right into your cart.
Members are buzzing over the recent find, which is quickly becoming a sweet breakfast staple. They're easy enough to grab when you're in a hurry, but they are also the ideal addition to a glorious morning spread, especially on Mother's Day, complementing bagels, bacon and fruit.
Paired with a cup of coffee or tea, they hit that sweet spot between indulgent and effortless that mornings desperately need.
The soft, buttery scones clock in at just under $6 for an 8-count, which is a value that's just as impressive as the taste.
Even Sam's Club agrees, revealing that they are the perfect choice to "start your day the sweet way."
Each bite promises a "warm cinnamon flavor," topped with a "drizzle of sweet icing."
"Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an anytime treat," the post suggested, as many the Instagram account Sam's Club Lovers even called them "a must."

While some said their kids liked them, others felt they were a little "too chewy" with an "underdone" taste.
If you find yourself intrigued or tend to enjoy a morning scone, give them a try and see what you think for yourself.
When you see them in the bakery section, just sitting there and calling your name, they're almost impossible to resist.
This Nostalgic Power Ballad Is the Fastest Song to Ever Reach 1 Billion Streams
There are over 1,200 songs in Spotify's Billion's Club, but one fan-favorite track was the fastest to ever do it.
According to new data released by Spotify as part of its 20th anniversary, the song fastest song to ever reach one billion streams was the Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars duet, "Die With a Smile."
The retro-inspired single was released in August 2024, and by November of that year it had already amassed one billion streams. It only took 96 days for it to reach a milestone that most songs never achieve, never mind doing so in a matter of months.
"Die With a Smile," a long-awaited collaboration between the two music superstars, is a nostalgic, soulful ballad reminiscent of 1970s soft rock. Its bittersweet lyrics about holding on to love as the world ends — along with the smooth yet powerful vocals harmonies from Mars and Gaga —made the song an instant hit with listeners.
The song spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it even won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2025 ceremony. (It was also nominated for Song of the Year, though that award ultimately went to Kendrick Lamar for his smash hit "Not Like Us.")

That title belongs to Drake, Wizkid and Kyla for the 2016 chart-topper "One Dance," which hit the milestone just over sixth months after its release.
Meanwhile, other songs have taken years, or even decades, to amass one billion streams, such as the Goo Goo Dolls' beloved 1998 track "Iris," which surpassed the milestone in 2022, 24 years after its initial release.
