'Summer House' Star KJ Dillard Shocks 'WWHL' Audience by Reading West Wilson’s Text Live on Air

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 7:55am

Summer House star KJ Dillard turned a routine reunion aftershock into a full-on breaking-news moment on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen when he revealed he’d finally received a message from West Wilson… then casually decided to read the text to the studio audience.

KJ previously wrote on Threads that he hadn't received a message from West after West said on a podcast he'd reached out to the cast about the explosive news he was dating Amanda Batula.

"He texted me the day after the reunion, and I didn't even look at the message...I was a bit scared to look at it," KJ admitted. Pulling out his phone, KJ teased, "Wait, should I read it right now?"

As the audience literally screamed and host Andy Cohen covered his face, KJ started reading the text—silently— to take in the message before considering if he'd read it to the viewers.

Admitting the message was long, KJ read the text to himself as his girlfriend, Dara Levitan, sat in the audience, sharing with Andy that the reunion was beyond intense.

Andy turns to KJ, asking about the text. "I'll read it," he said, giggling. "West says, 'I wanted to thank you for your articulation and kindness yesterday, despite being hurt. I've been off social, and I think I lost touch with how much hurt there was. I'm incredibly sorry. Also, sending you love in regards to your mental health. You shared a lot yesterday and I know it might carry much weight now, but I'm always rooting for the best for you. I know it will take some time, but whenever you feel like you're ready, lunch or a phone call would mean a lot in the spirit of healing. No need to respond. Take your time.'"

Leaning back in his chair, KJ reflected on the message's impact. "That really hurts," he said. "It just hurts because it's like me and him were so close."

KJ previously told Parade—before West and Amanda began dating—that he had hoped West and Ciara Miller might rekindle their romance, adding that he viewed Ciara as a big sister and West as a big brother.

"That’s big sister, and that’s big brother. I love them both, and I really want them to get married,” he laughed. “But West, he’s gotta settle down. Time will tell. I know he loves Ciara, though.”

Summer House is on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Bravo.

Nancy Guthrie Update: 'This Person Knew Her,' Criminal Profiler Says in Chilling Take on Suspect

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 7:45am

In a new television special set to air on the CW on Wednesday, May 6, criminal profilers Dr. Ann Burgess, Dr. Gary Brocato, and Dr. Casey Jordan sat down with NewsNation's Brian Entin to examine the Nancy Guthrie case.

Exclusive clips provided to Parade show the three experts agreeing the suspect likely knew or knew of Guthrie before the abduction, though they do not believe she knew them.

Dr. Burgess began by suggesting the suspect likely knew of Guthrie in some capacity, saying that the suspect likely "knows her in some way," adding, "I wouldn’t think that Nancy Guthrie knew this person."

"I agree this person knew her," Dr. Jordan added. "I don’t think she knew this person. Knew of her. And it could have been, we have to consider, it could have been somebody who saw her on the 'Today' show with her daughter, Savannah, maybe not even have met her. Could have been an Uber driver that she didn’t leave a big enough tip for. Could have been any of hundreds of service workers, I mean, she has been in this house since the ‘70s."

Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. The Pima County Sheriff's Department has renewed its plea to the public, asking anyone with information to come forward, saying even the smallest tip could prove significant.

For more on the case from these specific profilers, tune in to NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery tonight, May 6, at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.

What Your Ancestors Want You to Know, Based on Birth Date

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 7:41am

Whether we realize it or not, we are the living culmination of those who came before us. Our ancestors don’t just watch over us; they actively guide us through the quiet language of signs, dreams, and—most tangibly—the numerical blueprint of our birth. By understanding the planetary energy tied to your birth date, you can unlock the specific ancestral gifts and talents you were destined to inherit and share with the world. Read on to discover the message your ancestors likely want you to know, based on your birth date.

Each Birth Date’s Ancestral Message

As the language of the universe, numerology serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. When reduced to a single digit, your birth date’s numbers vibrate with the frequency of a specific celestial body, acting as a coded message from your lineage. Below is a breakdown of what your specific birth day reveals about the ancestral torch you are carrying in this lifetime.

Born on the 1st, 10th, 19th, or 28th – “Shine With Warmth and Not Just Intensity”

If you were born on a date reduced to 1, you’re used to others often swirling around you. Ruled by the Sun, you shine a bright light that is hard to ignore. This magnetic inner force you possess is meant to illuminate your way, as well as successful pathways for others, too. You are naturally life-giving and are meant to lead others by compassionately guiding them forward.

Born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th, or 29th – “Your Sensitivity Is Your Greatest Strength”

Being born on a date ruled by the Moon means you have a profound connection with your intuition. You are highly sensitive to other people’s energies and even places. Your ancestors want you to know that this strong gut instinct is a blessing you inherited from them. It is meant to guide and protect you, and even help you nurture those who can benefit from your emotional intelligence.

Born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st, or 30th – “Create and Express Yourself Without Fear”

Having a birth date that responds to the number 3, ruled by Jupiter, means you’re here to experience life in all its fullness. You were born to create paths of personal growth for both yourself and others. If at any moment you are doubtful in your abilities, there’s always a ray of light shining through that reassures your trust. Always protecting you, your ancestors inspire you to access the inner joy you inherited and share it with those around you.

Born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd, or 31st – “You Are the One to Break the Cycle”

If you were born on dates reduced to 4, you’re here to shake things up! Ruled by celestial freedom-seek Uranus, you’re here to break old generational curses and structure a new foundation based on authenticity. You may feel your ancestors breaking through the fog of confusion, inspiring strength and the birth of ideas just as situations reach a boiling point.

RELATE?: The 4 Birth Dates Who Make the Best Cat Parents

Born on the 5th, 14th, or 23rd – “Communicate From Your Personal Essence”

Those born on dates reduced to the Mercury-ruled number 5 are busy bees, often moving and connecting with others. While you may love to absorb information through others, your ancestors insist on always coming back to your essence. What statement or position sounds right to you? Learning to tune out outside noise and communicate from the heart ensures soul-based alignment and personal joy.

FURTHER: The 4 Birth Months With Divine Wisdom, According to Experts

Born on the 6th, 15th, or 24th – “Cultivate Beauty, Harmony, and Love”

Some people are born to chase, but those born on dates reduced to 6 were born to attract. When your ancestors visit, you may feel them inspiring you to open your arms to love, connection, and inner trust. Ruled by Venus, your biggest blessing is to build and nurture relationships that are based on pleasure, mutual trust, and emotional rapport.

Born on the 7th, 16th, or 25th – “Seek Wisdom in the Mundane”

If you were born on dates reduced to 7, you may love spending time exploring the spiritual realms. Your ancestors remind you that transcendence isn’t something to reach outside of yourself. Being ruled by Neptune means you are the embodiment of magic itself. And part of your soul's task is to infuse the lives of others, and even the most mundane moments, with it.

Born on the 8th, 17th, or 26th – “Your Persistence Leads to Lasting Legacy”

If you were born on a date reduced to 8, you chose a path that requires you to show consistency and resilience. When things get tough, your ancestors may find a way to remind you that your persistence is meant to pay off. Ruled by karmic Saturn, you’re designed to break generational cycles of lack, which you do so by creating a strong foundation for yourself and those who come after you.

EXPAND: The 4 Birth Dates Destined to Be Rich

Born on the 9th, 18th, or 27th – “Act With Passion and Purpose”

Having a birth date that responds to the number 9 means you’re here to complete cycles. This path, ruled by Mars, requires you to develop a great amount of courage, which should always be focused in the right direction. Your ancestors want you to know that the anger and intensity you feel at times are your greatest catalysts for dream manifestation and soul-alignment.

Padma Lakshmi Takes Us Inside Her New CBS Show, Motherhood and Making a Difference (Exclusive)

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 7:30am

Padma Lakshmi hosted Top Chef for 17 years before betting on herself and creating her own CBS show—America's Culinary Cup—from scratch. It's currently the No. 1 cooking competition series on television and just garnered two Critics Choice Award nominations. Not bad for someone who never went to culinary school!

But the truth is, Lakshmi has been boldly serving up success for decades. She began her career as a model and transitioned into food after becoming the host of Padma’s Passport, on which she cooked diverse cuisine from around the world, and Planet Food, a documentary series, both on the Food Network.

“There was no forethought,” she tells Parade. “There was just a push against the open door to take advantage of the opportunities that came to me. I had studied theater and literature, and I thought I was going to have a career as an actor.”

Still, the acting training paid off as she used her skills in front of the camera to build her culinary TV resumé. After leaving Top Chef, she created Taste the Nation, which won a 2021 Critics' Choice Real TV Award for Best Culinary Series. But the main dish is her new hit CBS series America’s Culinary Cup, where she was involved in every aspect of its development with her producing partners. That includes such minute details as selecting the thread used to embroider the names on the chefs’ coats and even the design of the winner’s trophy.

“I created this show exactly how I wanted to see a culinary competition show executed,” the 55-year-old says. “I'm very proud of the success and legacy that my other show has and that I've also helped build. But I wanted to refresh the genre. I wanted to take out all the gimmicks and the tricks that most competition shows throw in. I wanted to simplify it, bring it to a fresh and modern new start.”

The cast of 'America's Culinary Cup'

In doing so, Lakshmi decided to challenge the 16 competing chefs with what she labeled "Culinary Commandments": Meat, vegetables, sauces, dessert, innovation, flavors, sustainability, world cuisine, consistency, and culinary science/technology.

“Each episode is different and structured, designed around one culinary commandment or principle of fine cooking,” she explains. “I think the biggest difference between our show and other competition shows is that we don't throw in obstacles. We give them all the weapons they need to succeed, provide them with an unparalleled kitchen with as many beautiful ingredients as they could want, and enough equipment to go around.”

America’s Culinary Cup, which airs Wednesday nights on CBS, drops its finale on May 13, and one talented chef will walk away with $1 million, the largest monetary prize for a culinary competition show. The path from the series premiere to its upcoming finale was not a direct one, but rather a winding road.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Padma Lakshmi (7:14)

“There are so many twists and turns as you go through the season that even though I was there tasting the food and part of the judging process, I certainly didn't know how my two co-judges—Wylie Dufresne and Michael Cimarusti—would score,” Lakshmi says. “But there were things that surprised me. For instance, I had tasted Chris Morgan's food, and I was surprised that he was voted the least likely to win by his fellow competitors. And I was also very surprised that Beverly Kim [who was voted most likely to win] went home when she did, because she had been such a strong competitor and was so compelling the whole way through.”

There’s a lot of food on America’s Culinary Cup, and a lot of calories that come with it. And while that may not have been an issue for Lakshmi in her modeling days, it’s changed now at age 55. And that was actually something she took into consideration when developing the challenges.

“Models are usually freaks of nature,” she says. “They are models because they are extraordinary human beings physically. And part of being extraordinary is also your metabolism, so a lot of models are just naturally thin. When I was younger, I could eat anything and not gain weight. I was lucky, you know? Now it's about hard work.”

Ruvén Afanador/CBS

To help keep the hard work in the gym to a minimum, Lakshmi says she made sure that the chefs knew that, other than specific areas where they were judging for consistency, they knew they only needed to make tasting portions. So she’s usually taking one or two bites of something, three at the most.

“I want to pace myself. But I do go back for another bite if I'm unsure or if I didn't get that perfect bite of a little bit of everything on my fork,” she says. “It just depends. But I am cognizant of the fact that I don't want to get too full. But even if I am full, I still have to taste it thoroughly enough to judge it properly.”

Padma Lakshmi

Darren Goldstein/CBS

When structuring the CBS culinary competition, Lakshmi focused on American chefs, which also reflects her most recent cookbook, Padma's All American: Tales, Travels, and Recipes from Taste the Nation and Beyond.

“What I love about American cuisine is that it's this living, changing, developing organism,” she says about the new work. “People don't realize how regional American food is. It's a vast country where all kinds of things grow depending on where you live. And there's so many different influences on American food that, to me, it's the most exciting food in the world for that reason.”

Born in India on September 1, 1970, Lakshmi immigrated to the United States with her mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, an oncology nurse, when she was three. She first resided in New York City, later spending her high school years in La Puente, CA, where she lived with her mother and stepfather.

Lakshmi graduated from Clark University with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and American Literature and began her modeling career at age 21, becoming India’s first supermodel. When an agent discovered Lakshmi while she was studying in Madrid, that blossomed into her work on TV. Her on-screen appearances then expanded into cookbooks, including Easy Exotic; Tangy, Tart, Hot & Sweet; The Encyclopedia of Spices & Herbs; and her New York Times best-selling memoir Love, Loss, and What We Ate, and children’s book Tomatoes of Neela.

America’s Culinary Cup has yet to be picked up for its second season by CBS. But that’s not a problem for Lakshmi, who has many other projects on her plate. Notably, that includes her work with the United Nations Development Program, which takes her into a variety of communities to work with local leaders on various initiatives.

“What we've found in our research is that when you give women in a community the resources, it trickles down to everyone rather than [giving it to] the males,” she says.  “We've also found that there's still a lot of sexism and chauvinism in the world. Not just in rural communities, but in very developed places. My job with them is to assist in bringing attention to their work more than anything, and it's been a privilege to do that.”

The biggest change of pace, however, is that Lakshmi recently tried her hand at stand-up and took improv classes as well. While comedy is currently on the back burner due to both America’s Culinary Cup and the scripted projects she has in development with her production company, she isn't forsaking it at all.

“I'm hoping that at least one or two of the [development projects] come to fruition in the next year,” she says. “I have been writing comedy and testing it out a little bit in local clubs and just wetting my feet.”

On top of her busy work schedule, Lakshmi is also a single mom. Daughter Krishna (whom she had with venture capitalist Adam Dell) is 16 years old and currently attends a New York City performing arts high school, no doubt following in her mother’s footsteps.

“I try to tell her that she should remember that it's about making the art, not about being famous or living a certain lifestyle,” Lakshmi says. “It's really about the hard work and artists, whether they're writers or actors or painters or singers—she's a songwriter, too—they are trying to illuminate or trying to tell us something about ourselves or each other. They're trying to reveal something about the world. And in order to do that, she has to find out about the world.”

It's safe to say that between being an Emmy-nominated TV host, food expert, bestselling author, producer, and activist, she's discovered that self-care is essential. Exercise helps her feel grounded and stronger, both physically and mentally.

“It's the only time that I really focus without being tested or emailed or called or having to answer to anybody,” she says. “I'm lucky enough to be able to afford to go to the gym and have the time in my schedule to do it. I don't take that lightly. Rather, I try to remember that, so on that morning that I don't want to get up and go to the gym, I remember that it's a privilege that many people don't have, and it helps to get my butt out of that bed.”

That, of course, leads to a question that fans of food competition shows always are dying to know. When you're not judging, what are you eating?

“Sixty percent of my diet is fruits and vegetables," Lakshmi reveals. “I'm lucky. I happen to love fruits and vegetables most, so it's not a chore for me. I try not to drink too much, I don't eat a lot of red meat, I don't eat a lot of sweets, I don't eat a lot of flour. I eat dairy, but I'm a very simple eater. Obviously, I'm a normal person, so I'll go out and have two margaritas and a cheeseburger and fries as well for dinner. But then the couple of nights after that, I’ll probably have something much more humble and clean and healthy.”

“I never feel guilty about taking any pleasure," she continues. "But occasionally, I will take a handful of flaming hot Cheetos from my daughter or eat a bite of her corndog. You want a life of balance."

Indeed, between her time back on reality TV, her work behind the scenes, her writing, her family and her activism, it seems Padma Lakshmi's set of skills, like any good diet, is incredibly balanced.

Prince Archie Turns 7: How His Upbringing Differs From His Royal Cousins, Expert

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 7:27am

Prince Archie, son of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, turns 7 today.

Although he is royal by blood and title, Archie’s life differs significantly from that of his royal cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. An expert notes that while his cousins are being raised within the traditional structure of royal duties and public life, Archie is growing up with a more private and low-profile upbringing.

It's only recently that Meghan and Harry have shared more images of their son and his sister, Princess Lilibet. For many years, the couple has made a conscious effort to keep their children out of the public eye.

In stark contrast, George, Charlotte, and Louis are regularly seen at public engagements and are gradually being introduced to their roles within the monarchy. As the next generation of senior royals, the children are being gently prepared for future responsibilities as Kate and William ensure they have a childhood balanced between duty and normalcy.

Express quoted a specialist in UK Constitutional Law, Dr. Craig Prescott, who pointed out the differences in Archie's royal role versus his royal cousins.

"This is quite a unique situation," Prescott explained. "Given their future roles, the Prince and Princess of Wales have carefully introduced their children to conducting royal duties and attending the largest events, such as Trooping the Color. However, for obvious reasons, this has not been the case for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

He continued, "It seems to me very doubtful that Prince Archie and Princess Lillibet will ever conduct public duties. And that they will ostensibly live out their lives in America as private citizens, despite having the title."

While Archie has a title for the foreseeable future, Prescott believes that when William becomes king, he may further streamline the monarchy by only allowing working royals to have titles.

"We now have the precedent of the 'Princely status' being removed from someone with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, which shows that it could be done. We have moved towards a monarchy where titles and HRH status are increasingly connected to conducting public duties, and Prince William, when King, may wish to further that connection," he explained.

Prince Archie was born on May 6, 2019, at the Portland Hospital in London, England. He is currently sixth in line for the British throne.

Why the Famous 3-2-1 Disney Hack Does Not Work For My Family

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 7:10am

Disney Worldhas evolved tremendously since its opening over 50 years ago, so much so that heading to the parks without any sort of plan or strategy isn’t entirely a good idea. From having to book restaurant reservations 60 days in advance to scheduling lightning lanes for your favorite rides, there’s a lot of pressure when it comes to making sure you have a great time in the most magical place on earth.

Recently, there is a strategy that has become extremely popular amongst Disney World park goers. This is called the 3-2-1 Disney Hack. To follow this, you choose three must-do rides, two must-do entertainment options, and one dining experience. The idea behind following this is to create a tiny bit of structure for your day, ensuring that you hit some of your favorite things in the parks, but it also leaves room for spontaneity.

View this post on Instagram

While I do think that this idea is wonderful in theory—I realized that it wouldn’t be possible for my family’s Disney World trip. I have a large family of 10 that travels to Disney World every couple of years together. That is extremely different from the people who go a few times a year, sometimes with a much smaller group of people. For them, the 3-2-1 method works perfectly, but for us, it simply wouldn’t be an option.

Related: How I Pack For a 7-Day Disney World Trip With A Single Carry-On

We Couldn’t All Agree On What To Do

My family of 10 ranges in ages from 2 to 66. Some experiences are great for the 2-year-old, while others are great for the grandparents, and some are great for the in-between folks. Ultimately, however, we want to experience everything together. It wouldn’t be a family vacation if we all were simply running around to the attractions that we specifically wanted to enjoy, missing out on making memories as a family.

It's hard to choose activities that will please everyone in a family.

Melissa Cabey

If we had to choose just three top attractions to enjoy–that would be incredibly hard to do. Instead, we all discussed our “must-do” rides, and made a sheet in Excel. Then, we looked at which rides tend to have the longest lines throughout the day. For those rides, we booked lightning lanes one week ahead of time. We were able to book three rides per park day. After that, we had a list of the other rides we wanted to hit. After each lightning lane was redeemed on the day of our park visit, we were able to reserve another one in the app. Ultimately, we ended up doing about 5 to 6 rides, scheduled through lightning lanes, on each park day.

In Magic Kingdom, my family rode 6 rides before 1pm.

Melissa Cabey

As for entertainment, we simply fit in the shows or parades that were possible to go to in between our scheduled lightning lane rides. My family tried to experience as many of the entertainment options as possible, especially to appease the younger children in our group. This was something that we more-so did “on the fly”. Some days we were able to see three different shows or parades, and some days we didn’t see any.

Choosing one dining option is the one aspect of this method that I can get on board with. Since reservations are made 60 days in advance, and spots can fill up quickly, planning one special meal in each park is definitely a great idea. My family discussed what our most coveted options were for each park, and we tried to make sure that each person got to go to at least one of their favorite restaurants at some point throughout the week.

We Want Our Money’s Worth

Ultimately, if you only visit Disney once every few years, you’re going to want to experience as much as you possibly can. These trips can cost thousands of dollars–and it wouldn’t necessarily feel worth it if you didn’t take advantage of every second of the day.

Every family is different. Some, like mine, prioritize rides. If that’s the case, only planning on three and “seeing where the rest fall” isn’t going to guarantee that you hit all of your favorites. Instead, strategic planning must be used. The use of lightning lanes, checking the Disney World app for standby line times, and skipping a parade or show might be necessary to make it happen.

Other families love to see as many shows and parades as possible. When this is the case, that can make riding multiple rides in one day a bit tricky. But, if you’re only going to Disney World once every so often–would you really want to risk missing your favorite firework castle show or mid-day parade? You need to make the trip worth the money that you’re spending on it.

My family planned each second of our day out, and it worked beautifully!

Melissa Cabey

I truly do see how this method could be great for a family that goes to Disney World multiple times a year. They don’t feel the stress of “having to get it all in” when visiting the parks. If they miss their favorite attraction, they can simply make sure they hit it next time. For my family, however, the “next time” is years away–and we simply want to experience as much as we can while we’re there.

Carrie Underwood's Farm Life Helped Her Find What She's 'Supposed To Be Doing' (Exclusive)

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 7:00am

It’s been 20 years since Carrie Underwood released her debut single, “Jesus Take The Wheel.” It’s the song that spent six weeks at number one and earned Underwood two Grammys. All those years later, Underwood continues to be the face of country pop. But lately, she’s been enjoying a simpler life rooted in wellness on her 400-acre farm in Franklin, Tennessee.

"You can try to take the farm girl off the farm, but she’s going to find her way back,” Underwood said in an exclusive interview with Parade. “Which is exactly what I did. And there’s just something really beautiful about being outside, about planting things, about making … meals for my family.”

Underwood said that living on the farm has been special and has helped her own wellness and self-care, things that her new brand, HiNote, is aiming to promote.

“It’s a cup-filler for me,” Underwood said. “It feels like that’s what I’m supposed to be doing.”

In 2020, Underwood launched her fitness app, fit52. After seeing its success, Underwood and HiNote’s CEO and co-founder, Kerrigan Behrens, wanted to find a way to continue to empower the community of women that formed through the app.

“We started asking ourselves, ‘What’s the next step? How can we potentially make nutrition a little more approachable?’” Underwood said. “If you can do all the hacks, if you can hire a personal trainer, that’s amazing. But the vast majority of people can’t do that, and end up just feeling super overwhelmed. So we decided to create HiNote.”

HiNote's first product is a protein drink mix, released in fruity flavors inspired by the trees on Underwood's farm.

"I love growing things," Underwood said. "I have peach trees. I have blackberries and blueberries, and I have a lemon tree and a greenhouse.”

Having won American Idol in 2005, Underwood returned to the show as a judge this year for season 24. She said that wellness isn't just something she practices on her farm — it's also something she incorporated during her time on the show.

"I try to get a good night's sleep," Underwood said. "I bring snacks and food and stuff like that with me, so I'm not constantly ordering out or going out, or ordering room service, which can get super expensive anyway. ... I make the most of whatever hotel gym."

American Idol's three-hour finale will air live next Monday, May 11, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+. Underwood will return to the show as a judge, alongside Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys, who will be a guest mentor and performer.

22 Years Ago Today, Iconic Sitcom Aired Its Final Episode and Drew 52.5 Million Viewers

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 6:49am

On May 6, 2004, the final episode of Friends aired in the United States, pulling in 52.5 million viewers and cementing its place as one of the biggest television events of all time.

The episode, titled The Last One, closed the curtain on a decade-long story that followed six friends living in New York City.

The finale instantly became the most-watched TV episode of the 2000s and ranked among the top five most-watched series finales in American history, according to Television Academy. It was also the most-watched entertainment telecast in six years at the time, showing just how strong the show’s impact remained until its final moment.

Written by creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman and directed by executive producer Kevin S. Bright, the finale wrapped up long-running storylines while staying true to the show’s simple and heartfelt tone.

Originally aired as a two-part episode, The Last One served as both the 235th and 236th episodes of the series. Ross Geller and Rachel Green finally admitted their love for each other, ending their long on-and-off relationship.

Monica Geller and Chandler Bing welcomed twins and prepared to move to the suburbs, marking a new chapter in their lives.

The final scene brought all six friends together one last time. They left Monica and Chandler’s apartment, placed their keys on the counter and headed out for a final cup of coffee. Chandler’s line, “Where?” added a light joke to an emotional farewell.

The episode’s success was not limited to the United States. In Canada, it drew over five million viewers, becoming one of the most-watched episodes in the country as well.

From its debut in 1994 to its finale in 2004, Friends remained one of the most popular sitcoms on television. The series starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. Together, they built one of television’s most iconic ensembles.

The show’s success also changed the TV industry. By its final seasons, each main cast member earned $1 million per episode, making them among the highest-paid actors in television history, per The Guardian.

Behind the scenes, filming the finale was just as emotional as the story itself. The cast reportedly cried during scenes and production had to pause at times because of their reactions. Even the pre-show introduction was different, with all six actors walking out together instead of one by one.

After filming ended, the famous Stage 24 at Warner Bros. Studios was renamed “The Friends Stage,” honoring the show’s legacy.Even years later, Friends continues to reach new audiences through reruns and streaming. It also led to a spin-off, Joey, and a reunion special, Friends: The Reunion, bringing the cast back together.

Best-Selling Author Carley Fortune's Reaction to the Upcoming 'Every Year After' Trailer: 'I Almost Cried' (Exclusive)

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 6:40am

Carley Fortune fans have a lot to celebrate this summer. First, the best-selling author just released her latest romance book, Our Perfect Storm, on May 5, transporting readers to Tofino in Vancouver Island, following the friendship-turned-something-more of best buds Frankie and George. But that's not all. One of Fortune's most popular novels is heading to the small screen in just over a month! Every Year After, an adaptation of Every Summer After, is coming to Prime Video on June 10.

The first official look at Barry's Bay was released at the end of March with squeal-inducing photos of Sadie Soverall as Percy Fraser, Matt Cornett as Sam Florek and Michael Bradway as Charlie Florek. And fans have been begging for more ever since, with countless requests for a TV show trailer to be shared online ASAP.

While Fortune tells Parade that the trailer is indeed coming "soon," she herself recently watched two versions of it and "almost cried." Here, she reveals what fans will have a fun time picking out from the trailer's clips of the adaptation, if she ever feels nervous about the casting process (which she'll be going through soon on another project, the upcoming Netflix adaptation of This Summer Will Be Different) and what it's been like to have such a "wonderful" response to the casting of Every Year After.

Fortune's Reaction to the 'Every Year After' Trailer

Fans, get ready to celebrate: the Every Year After trailer is almost here!

"I saw the trailer yesterday," Fortune shared with Parade during our recent interview. "Oh, my God. I love it. I almost cried watching the trailer."

She explains that there's more than one version of it—and she's watched them both.

"I saw the full trailer and I saw a kind of shorter cut," she says. "I can't say when it's gonna drop, but it's soon."

And readers are sure to dissect every single second of the trailer once it's released.

"I think what will be really fun for fans of the book is picking out, like, you can kind of tell in the trailer, there are moments that you're like, 'Oh, it's that moment,' and moments where you'll be like, 'Wait, what's happening here?'" she tells Parade. "You can kind of see the little sprinklings of how the adaptation is expanding the world, which is, I think, a lot of fun."

Just from the few images that have been released so far, fans have been celebrating the little details that they've noticed, like Percy and Sam's friendship bracelets.

"The props department was so committed to getting things right," Fortune says. "Bless them."

The Public's Response to the 'Every Year After' Cast

And speaking of getting things right, the overall reaction to the casting of Sam, Percy and Charlie has been overwhelmingly positive.

"That's just something where you see them and, it feels like to me at least, you're like, 'This is them,'" Fortune tells Parade.

Does she ever get nervous about the casting process, especially in light of strong opinions shared on BookTok, as seen from the response to Emily Henry's Beach Read adaptation casting announcement?

"Not for me, personally," she reveals. "With Every Year After, I love the cast so much, and we'll be casting for This Summer Will Be Different soon. I don't feel that pressure, and fans will always have their opinions about, you know, actors and roles, and are entitled to them. But I think the proof is in the end result."

That being said, a favorable response is obviously welcome.

"The reaction to the Every Year After cast was so wonderful," Fortune says. "I feel happy about that for the actors, for the talent. It's been really, really positive for them, and they're wonderful. They're extremely talented, but they're also just wonderful people."

Dream Castings for Frankie and George of 'Our Perfect Storm'?

Frankie and George are the childhood friends from Fortune's latest novel, Our Perfect Storm. While part of their fiery personalities and bond have been inspired by Jo and Laurie from Little Women, we were curious if the author has a "dream cast" of any actors, in particular, for these two headstrong, complex characters.

"No," Fortune tells Parade. "When you're having these creative conversations with producers about adapting a work, names get tossed out for sure. And I think that's a good way of, like, seeing whether someone's vision kind of aligns with what you're kind of thinking about. But by the time you actually get to casting a thing, it's a completely different conversation."

"It's obviously like such an important ingredient, but at this stage, it's not the part of the conversation that matters most to me," she adds.

As Fortune has told Parade, those adaptation conversations are happening now for Our Perfect Storm, and she sees it as a movie.

We'll definitely be watching!

4 Birth Months Most Likely to Be People Pleasers

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 6:34am

Being a “people pleaser” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. People pleasers are truly selfless individuals who want to help loved ones and strangers alike. They might over-extend themselves, but it’s for a good cause. Many go through periods of being people-pleasers, but individuals born in these four birth months are likely to be people-pleasers throughout their lives. People born during these four birth months become people pleasers for different reasons. Some feel like it’s their duty to do good, while others worry about rocking the boat. Although these four birth months have different motives, they still band together as people pleasers.

The four birth months—June, July, August, and September—feel strongly about putting others’ needs and desires before their own. Although this is admirable, people born during these months must recognize when they need to prioritize their own happiness, goals, and livelihoods. Read on to learn more about June’s, July’s, August’s, and September’s people-pleasing mentalities and what they can do to feel confident about putting their needs first.

Are You a People Pleaser, Based on Your Birth Month?

Check for the month you were born for pro insights.

June: You’re the Shoulder to Cry On

If June doesn’t listen, then who will? Individuals born in June are a mix of chatty Gemini and sensitive Cancer, making them highly empathetic to people from all walks of life. June babies are known for their openness. People will always gravitate toward June when they need a shoulder to cry on. Even if June doesn’t have the bandwidth, they’ll still make time to be there for anyone who needs them. June’s willingness to hear other’s stories, woes, and anxieties is commendable. However, June may need to work on prioritizing their mental and emotional needs before being there for others.

July: Sharing is Caring

People born in July won’t hesitate to give the shirt off their backs. July babies are known for their kindness, thanks to being a stunning combination of caring Cancer and generous Leo. They don’t think twice about lending their personal effects, time, energy, and more to anyone who needs it. July has a deep love for others, since they see their friends, associates, and even strangers as family. Unfortunately, this can lead to being manipulated and taken advantage of. After trial and error, July will learn to reserve their efforts for those who truly deserve it instead of bending over backwards for everyone.

FUN: Your Celtic Goddess, Based on Birth Month

August: Acts of Service is Your M.O.

Those born in August take immense pride in being useful. Between their generous Leo spirit and hardworking Virgo attitude, August-born feel strongly about being productive. One of the many ways they accomplish this is through people-pleasing. August-born don’t necessarily mean to become people-pleasers, but they do find fulfillment and joy in helping out. Everyone knows an August baby will show up and go great lengths to do their best job. While August’s commitment to altruism is commendable, they should be wary of being taken advantage of. As long as there’s a tradeoff, August can continue being useful to others.

RELATE?: Which Classic Movie Matches Your Birth Date

September: Known for People-Pleasing

September-born will give their all to anyone who needs it. Their thoughtful Virgo mentality encourages September to put other’s needs first, but this doesn’t necessarily come from a place of altruism. September also embodies the peace-keeping Libra energy. They don’t want to ruffle any feathers. The last thing September wants to deal with is letting someone down, or worse, creating drama. While everyone loves September for their intentionality and goodwill, September will feel eventually burnt out from keeping up appearances. Luckily, people with this birth month will eventually learn that having boundaries won’t put a damper on their popularity and relationships.

1989 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Mainstream Rock Songs of All Time’ Was Cut From One of the Most Iconic Movie Scenes Ever

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 6:25am

In 1989, The Smithereens had a radio hit with the song “A Girl Like You.” Written by Pat DiNizio, the song was the first single from the New Jersey-based alternative rock band’s third album, 11. It peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1990 and soared to No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Billboard also ranked “A Girl Like You” one of the greatest mainstream rock songs of all time.

For 11, The Smithereens brought in a new producer, Ed Stasium. According to Best Classic Bands, DiNizio once said, “I’m not sure what we were looking for…maybe a heavier guitar sound, like in ‘A Girl Like You.’ We were trying to preserve our integrity, yet find a home on radio.”

The song was originally meant to be a movie theme

"A Girl Like You" was originally written for an iconic movie scene. In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, DiNizio revealed, ”That was written for the movie Say Anything.”

”I based it on bits of dialogue in the screenplay and video that they gave me months and months before the film was released,” he shared. “At a certain point, the producer wanted me to change the lyrics, and I didn`t want to, so the band decided not to give them the song. They used an old Peter Gabriel song,`In Your Eyes,' instead.”

The story was confirmed on Say Anything director Cameron Crowe’s official website, The Uncool. “Originally, the Smithereens were asked to write the theme song for the movie,” a blurb on the site noted. “The result was a ‘A Girl Like You,’  but producer James Brooks and Cameron thought that the lyrics revealed too much of the plot and was rejected in favor of Peter Gabriel’s ‘In Your Eyes.’”

The Say Anything scene DiNizio wrote “A Girl Like You” for comes at the end of the Cameron Crowe film, when Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) holds a blaring boombox above his head as he stands outside the bedroom window of his romantic interest, Diane Court (Ione Skye). The boombox serenade featuring Peter Gabriel’s song remains one of the most iconic rom-com film scenes ever.

RELATED: 1970 Hit Film, Nominated for Rare Academy Award, Ranked Among Best Movies of All Time

Cameron Crowe considered other songs

When Crowe originally wrote the Say Anything screenplay, he wasn’t thinking of The Smithereens or Gabriel for the iconic boombox scene.

“The sad truth is, I wrote that scene for Billy Idol’s ‘To Be a Lover,’ if you can believe it,” Crowe shared in a blog post. “There was one day I liked that song, and that was the day I wrote the scene. By the next day, I knew it was a hideously wrong choice.”

The filmmaker briefly considered using a Fishbone song for the scene, as Cusack was a superfan of the ska-punk band.

“And it was really wrong – as wrong as  ‘To Be a Lover,’ “ he admitted. “You’ve just got to imagine it. Ione’s turning in her bed, and this song is insidiously working into her soul – and then you cut to Cusack holding a boom box blasting… Fishbone? It’s like, ‘Pull it together, man! Have you ever heard about setting the proper mood? Dude, pick your moment.’ It was so wrong.”

While “A Girl Like You” didn’t make the original cut, years later, the song was included in an expanded reissue of the movie soundtrack. In 2022, a post on The Smithereens official Facebook page read, “This is cool! Smithereens HQ finally received a copy of the new reissued SAY ANYTHING film soundtrack. The Smithereens’ original demo for ‘A Girl Like You’ is included on the Say Anything expanded edition soundtrack on vinyl, produced by Cameron Crowe. The film, starring John Cusack and Ione Skye, was released in 1989 and the soundtrack again in 2021.”

The One Note in Toto's 'Africa' You've Never Noticed — And Why It Makes the Whole Song

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 6:10am

Toto's 'Africa' has been streamed more than a billion times on Spotify. It's turned up in movies, television, memes, and wedding playlists for four decades. Newer generations keep discovering it. The band themselves, by their own admission, never thought it would amount to much.

So why does it hold people the way it does?

Rick Beato, a record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and one of YouTube's most-followed music educators (his channel, Everything Music, has over five million subscribers) recently took the song apart note by note in a video titled 'The Mystery Chord That Made Toto's 'Africa' a Mega-Hit.' What he found is the kind of thing you feel every time you hear the song but probably couldn't name.

He's says the answer lives in the verse. Specifically in a single guitar note that guitarist Steve Lukather plays against the keyboard chord underneath it.

The chord itself, built around a G-sharp minor, creates a particular tension. Lukather adds a high open E string on top of it. That note, Beato says, sitting against the D-sharp in the melody, produces what musicians call a 'flat nine', an interval so harmonically tense it practically vibrates. Beato describes it as the dissonance that makes you want to hear the song over and over, the thing your ear keeps reaching for without realizing it.

To understand how that note got there, Beato did something most music breakdowns don't. He called the guitarist and asked.

Lukather confirmed that the guitar part was laid down during the basic tracking sessions, with a scratch vocal from keyboardist David Paich already in place. The lyrics weren't finished yet, but Paich was singing the melody, and Lukather played that dissonant fill in response. According to Beato, both men knew immediately that it worked.

What Lukather played wasn't complicated, but it was exactly right.

Beato also points to the chorus, where a harmony line moves from the second to the third to the fourth degree of the chord underneath the word 'Africa' itself, a quick, nearly subliminal motion that most people have heard hundreds of times without consciously noticing. He argues that line, brief as it is, is a significant part of why the chorus hits as hard as it does.

Beato makes the case, through a comparison to the Weezer cover of the song, that these elements aren't decorative. The Weezer version, recorded a half step down from the original, loses the precise voicing. Beato notes it as an illustration of how much those specific intervals matter. The song exists in a narrow harmonic window, and sliding out of it changes the character entirely.

'Africa' was written primarily by David Paich and Jeff Porcaro and appeared on Toto IV in 1982, the album that won six Grammy Awards including Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Paich, who never visited Africa before writing the song, drew on childhood memories of missionary stories from a Catholic school education and descriptions from a National Geographic article. At the time, Lukather was openly skeptical the song would connect with anyone. He was wrong.

What Beato's breakdown makes clear is that 'Africa' works because of its precision. The musicians who recorded it were among the most in-demand session players in Los Angeles (Lukather alone has recorded guitar on an estimated 1,500 albums) and they brought that level of instinct to every bar. The note that makes the verse is one open string. But its in exactly the right place, against exactly the right chord, and forty-plus years later, people are still listening.

I Went To My First Formula 1 Race—Here's What Surprised Me Most About The Experience

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 6:10am

It was a sweltering MiamiSaturday when I entered the gates of my first Formula 1 race. The excitement for the day’s sprint race was palpable, live DJ sets from Marshmello and DJ Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal’s alter ego) were playing on the Jumbotrons around the Miami International Autodrome, and nearly everyone was decked out in their favorite driver’s colors.

As I ventured further into the various activations around the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prixtrack, I quickly learned how fun and overwhelming (in a good way) my first Formula 1 weekend would be. There was so much to see and do that even over two full days, it would be nearly impossible to do everything and watch the races, though I did attempt to make it to every section of the grounds. But even as I made a list of things I wanted to do, and studied the Miami Grand Prix map, there were still some things that surprised me about the overall experience during the Formula 1 weekend in South Florida. Keep reading to find out the four things that surprised me most about the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.

I Loved How Family-Friendly The Race Weekend Really Was Formula 1 race simulators at the Miami Grand Prix.

Megan duBois

I was truly surprised at how family-friendly the entire race experience was. Throughout the weekend at the track, I saw families with young kids decked out in their favorite driver’s gear, older adults enjoying the festive atmosphere, and everything in between. Between races, there was always something to do, from enjoying different foods and treats to pretending you were an F1 driver with simulator games and more.

And even if you didn’t actually make it to the Miami International Autodrome, there were pop-ups all around the city, from hotels with F1 cars in the lobby to fan zones like the Official Fan Fest at the beach and the Racing Fan Fest in Wynwood, both of which are free for anyone to attend.

Campus Passes Give You Access To More Than I Anticipated During the 2026 F1 Miami Grand Prix on Saturday, May 2, 2026 in Miami Gardens, Fla.

AJ Shorter/F1 Miami GP

One of the cheapest tickets for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix is the campus pass. Think of this more like a festival ticket. Your pass gives you entry into the race facilities, but you don’t have an assigned seat in the Grandstands. You’re free to walk around, enjoy the on-site activations across the themed zones, try all of the food and drinks, and watch the race from behind the fence line or on the many TVs around the Miami International Autodrome.

I spent a few hours each day walking around the grounds, and loved how much there was to do. My favorite thing was heading up the ramps into Hard Rock Stadium to get a look at the Paddock and spotting some of the most popular drivers. Even better, anyone with any type of ticket, including campus passes, can do this in Miami. I also loved the little games and activations around the campus, including the Red Bull Pit Stop Challenge and Gaming Trailer. There were also incredible art installations and luxury car displays that drew crowds.

One New Seating Option Stands Out Among The Rest MSC Yacht Club Activation at the 2026 Formula® 1 Miami Grand Prix

F1 Miami GP

There are Grandstands and risers lining the circuit, but one new seating and hospitality option really stands out among the rest: The MSC Yacht Club experience inside the Marina zone of the campus. This unique hospitality zone is modeled after MSC Cruises ship-within-a-ship concept on its actual cruise ships. The entire structure is inspired by a super yacht. It has five decks boasting panoramic views of turns five through nine.

This is where I spent the majority of my time at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, and it truly lived up to the exclusive experience the Yacht Club on MSC’s cruise ships is known for. Each deck offered a different experience, starting with the Marina Deck, which has trackside cabanas, and Deck 1, with lounge seating and a pool. Deck two is the heart of the Yacht Club, with reserved covered seating, while Deck 3 is home to a Jack Daniel’s Lounge and more reserved covered seating. My favorite deck was the Captain’s Deck, where panoramic views of the track and limited access made it feel even more exclusive.

Over my two days at the Miami Grand Prix, the MSC Yacht Club became an easy home base to enjoy the races. I also loved that all the food and drink were included in the ticket cost. The food is created in partnership with Bagatelle, and throughout the weekend, I had everything from lobster rolls and fresh fruit to grilled cheese sandwiches with freshly shaved black truffles and made-to-order tacos.

And don’t worry if you missed out on your chance to enjoy the MSC Yacht Club at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, because it’s returning in 2027, too.

I Enjoyed How The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix Highlighted Local Culture

One of the biggest surprises is how much the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix highlighted the city’s local culture. Around the F1 campus, there were zones inspired by Miami's iconic neighborhoods. At the West Campus, you could get a taste of Little Havana with a domino park and try some of the best Cuban food from Café La Trova. The North Campus highlighted the modern Brickell neighborhood, with a food hall lined with stands, but a favorite being Doggi’s Arepa Bar. Each of the other zones had local restaurant pop-ups, as well. As I explored, local artists were putting the final touches on art installations. My favorite was a hand-painted F1 car that really showcased the vibrant colors of Miami.

After spending the weekend at the F1 Miami Grand Prix, I walked away not only with a greater appreciation for Formula 1 (and a new Apple TV+ subscription to watch the rest of the season’s races), but also with the anticipation of hopefully going to another race this year, or returning to Miami in 2027. If you’re like me and like to plan out trips pretty far in advance, you can already sign up for access to tickets for next year’s Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix via a deposit program or by joining the waitlist for more information.

On This Day in 1957, ‘I Love Lucy’ Ended—Why TV’s No. 1 Show Didn’t Have a Big Finale

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 6:04am

On May 6, 1957, I Love Lucy ended its six-season run on CBS. The classic TV sitcom, which starred real-life couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz along with co-stars Vivian Vance and William Frawley, aired 180 episodes and was the top-rated show on television for most of its run.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it only took I Love Lucy six months to become the No. 1 show in America when it debuted in 1951, and it remained the most-watched show for four of its six seasons.

The biggest episodes remain classics nearly 70 years later. Fans saw series star Ball stomp grapes, work in a chocolate factory, and welcome a baby boy both on and off screen.

With so much love from fans, it came as a surprise when I Love Lucy ended its run without a bang. On May 6, 1957, a regular episode served as a goodbye to the series. Titled “The Ricardos Dedicate a Statue,” the episode centered on a Revolutionary Day Celebration and Lucy Ricardo’s (Ball) attempt to remain stone-faced (literally) after she accidentally broke a statue that was set to be dedicated in the Westport, CT, town square.

The odd ending to the beloved series came amid the Arnazes' decision to step back from the rigors of a weekly television series and focus more on their Desilu production company.

A continuation series aired, but it wasn’t the same

After I Love Lucy’s end, the Ricardos returned for the 13-episode spin-off The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour. But it didn’t have the same impact as the original series. The expanded series featured the Ricardos traveling and running into celebrity guest stars such as Cesar Romero, Tallulah Bankhead,  Betty Grable, Milton Berle, and Danny Thomas.

Unlike I Love Lucy, sponsorship for the hour-long episodes was a problem. In an interview with Woman’s World, Lucy historian Geoffrey Mark recalled, “Since I Love Lucy was the biggest show on television, one would have imagined an hour-long version every month or so would have had the sponsors screaming, ‘Choose me, choose me!’ But the only sponsor Desi could find was the Ford Motor Company and they would only do five of them.”

He also noted that by the end of its run, the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour wasn’t even comical. “By the last season, it isn’t that the shows were terrible, but everyone was slowing down and getting older,” Mark said. “The last episode is with Edie Adams and Ernie Kovacs, and it’s almost difficult to watch. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz have almost no lines together, and their characters don’t even talk to each other much.”

Arnaz had a bittersweet recollection of the ‘I Love Lucy’ franchise.

Arnaz looked back on the I Love Lucy legacy in an interview after the spinoff series ended in early 1960. "I remembered how it started with I Love Lucy and how it ended, too,” the actor and director once told The Daily Gleaner, per MeTV. "Our marriage had already ended."

"The very last [Lucy Desi Comedy Hour]) I did with Lucy, I was the director," Arnaz shared. "Our marriage had already ended. …Now I am supposed to kiss Lucy in the last second of the last scene. A kiss that wrapped up twenty years of love and jealousy and laughter and tears. We looked at each other. Then I kissed her. And then Lucy, knowing I was the directing, said to me, 'You're supposed to say 'Cut!' And I said, 'Darn it, I know. Cut!'"

Ball filed for divorce from her husband of 20 years just as the last episode aired in March 1960.

“They already knew the divorce was happening; they just waited for that last episode to air,” Mark told Woman’s World.  “After it did, they filed for divorce. They just didn’t want to squash ratings or hurt the characters of Lucy and Ricky. But at that point, it was over. All of it.”

The #1 Sweetener To Avoid if You Have Fatty Liver Disease, According to Gastroenterologists

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 5:25am

When it comes to gut health, we typically focus only on how our stomach feels. But as gastroenterologist Dr. Treta Purohit, MD, says, there's more to the story.

"Your digestive system is a complex, interconnected ecosystem, not just a tube that food passes through," states Purohit, who's also the medical director at Oshi Health. "Your liver, your gut and the trillions of bacteria living in your intestines are all in constant communication."

A food or drink loaded with added sugar sends the wrong message, even if your taste buds may disagree. "It affects your gut bacteria, your blood sugar and, importantly, your liver," Dr. Purohit explains. "Most people do not realize that the liver is responsible for processing much of what you consume."

Over time, certain sweeteners can alter the balance of bacteria in your gut, increase inflammation and contribute to fat buildup in your liver, all of which can contribute to long-term health concerns. One of these concerns is fatty liver disease, which is not just an issue for people who drink excessively.

"Broadly, fatty liver disease is when you have an increased amount of fat in your liver," reports Dr. Adam Pont, MD, a board-certified gastroenterologist with Medical Offices of Manhattan and a labfinder.com contributor. "Generally, this is caused either by excess alcohol consumption or general metabolic causes such as obesity, or elevated blood sugar, such as in diabetes or high cholesterol."

When you minimize or avoid certain sweeteners, you can lower your risk of fatty liver disease or manage the condition better if you're living with it. Unfortunately, some sweeteners that can worsen or contribute to fatty liver disease are seemingly ubiquitous. Gastroenterologists help us play detective by sharing the number one sweetener to avoid if you have fatty liver disease or want to lower your risk. They also share ways to liven up your meals, snacks and drinks that your taste buds and liver will love.

The One Sweetener To Avoid if You Have Fatty Liver Disease, Gastroenterologists Say

Gastroenterologists warn that consuming too much high-fructose corn syrup can contribute to worsening fatty liver disease. It can also put people at greater risk for metabolic syndrome, including obesity, type 2 diabetes and Metabolically Active Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).

One gastroenterologist warns that high intake of high-fructose corn syrup can increase your chances of developing MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis).

"MASH is an aggressive form of MASLD with significant liver inflammation, which can lead to damage and scarring of the liver," states Dr. Lee F. Peng, MD, Ph.D, the chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center. "Over time, the liver scarring can become severe and irreversible, a state known as cirrhosis, which can predispose patients to liver failure and liver cancer."

A 2020 study of mice in Nature Metabolism suggested that high-fructose intake could damage the intestinal barrier and increase the risk of liver disease.

That's a problem, especially when you consider that high fructose corn syrup is hidden in plain sight on tons of ingredient labels. "High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is one of the most widely used sweeteners in the American food supply," Dr. Purohit warns. "You'll find it in sodas, flavored yogurts, salad dressings, bread, cereal, condiments and countless packaged foods—practically everything."

Dr. Purohit shares that the liver processes HFCS differently than other sugars.

"Unlike glucose, which your entire body can use for energy, fructose is processed almost exclusively by the liver," Dr. Purohit explains. "That means when you consume a lot of it, especially in liquid form, like soda or sweetened juice, your liver gets hit with a heavy load all at once."

She says that when the liver is flooded with more fructose than it can manage, it begins to convert it into fat, explaining, "Over time, this contributes directly to the fat buildup that defines fatty liver disease."

That said, Dr. Pont emphasizes that we still need more human studies to determine precisely how harmful high-fructose corn syrup is, especially in people with liver disease (or at a greater risk of it).

"Despite the prevalence of HFCS in the food supply and good data linking HFCS consumption to obesity and diabetes, there is remarkably little human data showing how HFCS affects the liver, either in people with or without fatty liver disease," he says.

The authors of a 2025 review on the subject agreed, finding only one study that met their criteria and calling for more research.

Other Ways High-Fructose Corn Syrup Can Harm Your Gut Health

Beyond directly contributing to worsening liver disease, gastroenterologists say that high-fructose corn syrup poses other health risks, including insulin resistance.

"Our body needs insulin to help balance and manage the energy load," says Dr. Rucha Shah, MD, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at HonorHealth. "But when the insulin levels are triggered to such a high degree, the body develops a mechanism by which it no longer responds to insulin, triggering an insulin resistance pathway where the cells no longer use the fat and go into storage mode."

Chronic insulin resistance can trigger prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. It can also increase the risk of liver disease. Dr. Purohit warns that HFCS can also disrupt the balance of bacteria in your gut.

"A disrupted gut microbiome has been associated with fatty liver disease progression, creating a vicious cycle where the sweetener harms both the gut and the liver, and the damage to one makes the other worse," Dr. Shah says.

Other Sweeteners To Avoid for Better Liver and Overall Health

High fructose corn syrup isn't the only sweetener to avoid if you want to protect your liver and overall health. "Artificial sweetener, such as aspartame, can also have a similar effect when it comes to metabolism and insulin resistance," Dr. Shah says.

Research is mixed, with some studies finding no link between aspartame and insulin resistance. But other studies suggest a potential association between aspartame and liver cancer.

Dr. Purohit also warns against added sugar in general. "HFCS gets the spotlight, but it's not the only sugar that can overload your liver," she says. "Table sugar (sucrose), agave nectar and any added sweetener in excess can contribute to fat buildup."

She reveals that one of the best steps you can take for your liver health is to lower added sugar in your diet. "Sugary beverages are particularly risky because they deliver a concentrated dose of sugar with no fiber to slow absorption."

Liver-Friendly Ways To Sweeten Food and Drinks

Dr. Purohit says you don't have to deny your sweet tooth any satisfaction.
But you do want to be smarter about where it comes from. "Fresh or frozen fruit is the easiest swap," she tells Parade. "Adding sliced berries, banana or mango to oatmeal, yogurt or cereal gives you natural sweetness along with fiber, vitamins and antioxidants."

She shares that the fiber in whole fruit slows sugar absorption, so you don't get hit with a sugar overload, unlike when you consume sweetened drinks and processed foods.

Dr. Purohit adds that other fun add-ins include:

  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla
  • Nutmeg
  • A small amount of pure maple syrup
  • A small amount of raw honey
  • Dates

Not feeling fancy? Your local grocery or convenience store may have some liver-approved options.

"Consume beverages, such as water, sparkling water, unsweetened tea or unsweetened coffee, that don't have added sugar," Dr. Peng says.

The 'Internet's Favorite Labor Nurse' Jen Hamilton Reveals the 'Frustrating' Thing She Wishes 'The Pitt' Did Differently (Exclusive)

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 5:23am

The second season of The Pitt concluded just a few weeks ago on April 16, with the internet abuzz as fans weighed in on what these 15 episodes got right, what they think is coming in Season 3 and, of course, the meme that keeps on giving with "Baby Jane Doe."

One of the biggest fans of the show is Jen Hamilton, a content creator with 4.8M TikTok followers and 1.8M followers on Instagram, labor and delivery nurse, and author of Birth Vibes: Stories and Strategies for an Empowered Birth (which just came out on May 5).

Before Jen was an L&D nurse, she worked in the ER herself. So, while we recently chatted with her about her book release, we had to ask: with her ER background, could she share her take on The Pitt's accuracy? What do they get right, and what could they do better?

Find out the "frustrating" thing she wishes they would do differently, and why she tells Parade, "I wish they would have called me." Plus, she shares which specific character is "spot on" and reveals more about a surprising connection she has with a family member of one of the actors from The Pitt.

Jen Hamilton's Thoughts on the Accuracy of The Pitt

"So I think it super accurately depicts the ER portion of it—like the chaos," Jen tells Parade. "One thing I love about it is that since each episode is one hour of the shift, you kind of see that there's all these different threads that follow you through your shift. [And] there's so many different things that, vie for your attention."

But there *is* something she wishes they would do differently.

"The thing that I wish they would do a little bit better is the OB portion," she reveals. "I wish they would have called me—or somebody—because, in the last episode with the OB patient where she has a seizure, they put the monitors on upside down and in the wrong place, and I'm like, 'Ah!' That's such a simple thing that if you were to ask anybody who's ever worked on an OB [unit], we would tell you, 'Hey, bro, that's wrong.' It's frustrating because everything else is so accurate. That part would be such a simple thing to get right."

That being said, Jen praises "the ER part of it," sharing that the relationships between the people who are working really closely with each other is one of the most accurate aspects of the show as well.

"Dana, the charge nurse [played by Katherine LaNasa href="https://parade.com/news/the-pitt-star-had-never-seen-seinfeld-before-being-cast-i-was-living-under-a-rock" target="_blank"], is spot on [as] an ER charge nurse—I cannot believe she's not actually one in real life," she says. "And then Noah Wyle, of course, he's an incredible ER physician. I think I would trust him to be an ER physician at this point. I think he's done enough clinical hours to qualify."

Her Surprising Connection to One of the Stars of The Pitt

Jen recently shared on social media that she actually worked closely with a family member of Patrick Ball, who plays Dr. Frank Langdon on The Pitt.

"His mom, Lee Ann, is so, so sweet," Jen tells Parade. "I was a baby, baby nurse 14 years ago, and she was one of the people that trained me."

View this post on Instagram

Has Jen picked up on any of Patrick's mom's mannerisms while watching his character care for patients on the show?

"I will say that Patrick's character obviously is a little bit more of a man, I guess is how I'd say it," Jen laughs. "But I think there is that thread of compassion and wanting to do the best for people—so that part I can definitely see. She's an amazing nurse and she raised an amazing actor who plays an amazing doctor!"

Meanwhile, Jen's followers are hoping this connection could lead to her showing up on The Pitt, leaving comments like:

  • "Clearly you need a part of season 3!"
  • "We need a Jen Hamilton cameo."
  • "I need to see a Jen Hamilton CEN and Dana collaboration 🔥"
  • "Maybe you could help them make an accurate labor scene 😂😩"
  • "You need to be on the show!"

We agree!
