Robert Irwin credits a lot of the strength he learned at an early age to his mother, Terri Irwin.

The wildlife conservationist told Jimmy Fallon that Terri helped him deal with the grief over the unexpected death of his father, Steve Irwin, in 2006. Irwin was just two when Steve died after being impaled by a Stingray.

In turn, he honored his mother by dancing in her honor for Dancing With the Stars "Dedication Night." He and his pro-partner Witney Carson performed an emotional contemporary routine to the Phil Collins song, "You'll Be In My Heart," dedicated to Terri.

“This was like a turning point for me with this show," he told Fallon. "It was the first time I really told kind of my journey of grief and the way that she helped me through that.”

"To use your body as this expression of self, to share such a deeply personal story through the lens of gratitude for my mom. That's when I realized dancing, it's storytelling that's all it is,” he added.

Irwin won Season 34 of the celebrity competition series, taking home a mirrorball for his efforts. His success came ten years after his sister, Bindi Irwin, won alongside pro-Derek Hough.

Since his win, Irwin returned to the Australia Zoo, where he works alongside Terri, Bindi, and her husband Chandler Powell to run the zoo, take care of the animals, and ensure an unforgettable experience for guests.

However, he has also been active in the states, promoting the zoo, his time on Dancing With the Stars, and touring with the cast on their latest run of live shows. Recently, Irwin was announced as the host of a series spinoff, Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro.

It's always a major event whenever Costco introduces a new menu item to food courts across the nation.

Joining the elite ranks of Costco's affordable pizza slices, frozen yogurts and hot dog and soda combos, the beloved warehouse brand is reportedly testing out a brand-new food court item in the form of their chicken breast strips.

According to Sporked, multiple shoppers have reported seeing the new chicken strips pop up select Costco locations, most especially in Chicago and around Illinois. Featuring five breaded chicken strips and an accompanying dipping sauce and a side of french fries, the item is available for $6.99, making it a fantastic option for all those looking for a hearty meal that doesn't put too much stress on your wallet.

Originally introduced as an exclusive offering to Canadian Costco locations, on paper, the new food court item sound like the ultimate addition to the brand's menu lineup. However, Sporked revealed that many shoppers are maintaining mixed opinions about the new arrival.

For example, the folks at The Takeout shared their honest opinions about the new meal, believing the continued excitement around the dish a tad overrated.

"Now, far be it from me to rain on any Costco fan's parade, but I think the comment section of the TikTok video featuring the latest food court choice is teeming with a little too much excitement over something as simple as chicken strips," the outlet wrote.

"They're a great snack, but nothing that warrants the level of enthusiasm some people are displaying," the publication continued. "For instance, one commenter indicated they were willing to drive an hour to get their hands on some if they were good. Yet, a reply to that comment backs up my assertion that the hype is overblown, as they said, 'They were okay.' That's not exactly a ringing endorsement."

Exactly two weeks after he was found dead at his home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Storage Wars star Darrell Sheets' cause of death has officially been ruled a suicide.

According to People magazine, the ruling comes from the Mohave County Medical Examiner's Office in Arizona, confirming prolonged beliefs that the 67-year-old's death was self-inflicted.

Sheets' body was first found at his residence from what police believed to be an apparent suicide at around 2 a.m. on April 22, with first responders investigating a call related to "a reported deceased individual.”

“The male was pronounced deceased on scene, and the Lake Havasu City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit was notified and responded to the scene to assume the investigation," the police release at the time read.

Previously, Sheets was known as one of the most popular stars on A&E's TV show Storage Wars, the premise of which followed professional buyers looking to purchase abandoned storage lockers.

Dubbed "the Gambler," Sheets remained well-known for his aggressive bidding strategies at auction, frequently appearing alongside his son Brandon on the show.

Originally appearing in the first season of Storage Wars back in 2010, Sheets eventually left the series in 2023 after the conclusion of its 15th season. He would go on to retire from the show entirely, opening an antique store in Arizona called Havasu Show Me Your Junk.

Following the death of the TV star, several of Sheets' co-stars and a spokesperson for A&E shared tributes to The Gambler, expressing their thoughts and sentiments to Sheets' family.

“We are saddened by the passing of a beloved member of our Storage Wars family, Darrell ‘The Gambler’ Sheets," A&E said. "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

There’s nothing more frustrating and annoying than going out to tend to your garden and then realizing crabgrass has started to appear. Not only does it ruin the beautiful aesthetic of your garden, but it can also be detrimental to your lawn and flowers such as daisies, tulips and roses. It can also make it more of a hassle for you to maintain your garden now there’s another pesky weed in the way that needs to be managed before it’s too late. 

“Crabgrass is a warm-season annual that tends to show up in areas where soil is bare, compacted or where turf isn’t growing densely enough to compete,” says Anton Ledin, gardener and plant expert at Planta, a plant care app. “Crabgrass is caused less by the presence of seeds, which are almost always there, and more by the conditions that allow those seeds to germinate.”

Luckily, there are ways to stop crabgrass and most of them are actually pretty easy if you know what to do. Rarely will you need professional assistance to help get a grasp on crabgrass.

Ahead, we spoke with gardening experts about how to stop crabgrass and here’s what they had to say. Spoiler alert: Prevention is key. 

How to Stop Crabgrass

If you have crabgrass in your lawn, then there are some ways to get rid of it. Here are five tried and tested ways to get rid of crabgrass. 

1. Focus on Prevention 

The best way to stop crabgrass before it takes over your lawn is to try to prevent it in the first place. “Prevention starts with building a thicker, healthier lawn or planting area that naturally crowds out weeds,” says Ledin. “That can mean improving soil, overseeding and incorporating more diverse plantings where appropriate.”

2. Hand-pull It Before It Grows Larger

If you notice crabgrass on your lawn (even if it’s just a small amount), then you can get rid of the weed by pulling it out by hand.

“When crabgrass is small, it’s easy to manage by hand-pulling it in short intervals rather than allowing it to spread,” says Ledin. “After removal, addressing the underlying issue by filling in bare spots with desirable plants helps prevent open space and ensures they don’t remain open for the next round of weeds.”

3. Maintain a Healthy Lawn

According to Lucie Bradley, an expert gardener at Easy Garden Irrigation, if you have a healthy lawn, then it will be too strong for weeds, including crabgrass, to grow. 

“To ensure your lawn is healthy the first thing to check is that you have the correct grass for your area,” Bradley tells Parade. “This means choosing a cool-season grass if you live in North America and cutting your lawn to the correct height, ideally keeping your lawn to a height of three inches, which shades the soil so it doesn’t become warm enough for crabgrass seeds to germinate.” 

Additionally, to help encourage healthy, strong roots and thriving grass, you’ll want to water it deeply at least once or twice a week. “If you water it lightly on a daily basis, this will result in weaker roots and a lawn more easily susceptible to weeds or disease.”

4. Use a Pre-Emergent Herbicide

One of the best ways to stop crabgrass is to use a pre-emergent herbicide that contains either prodiamine, dithiopyr or pendimethalin, according to Bradley. 

“A well-timed crabgrass pre-emergent application will provide added protection against crabgrass,” says Roger May, director of technical operations at Trugreen. “They form a barrier beneath the soil surface to block new weeds from taking root. When applied correctly, they create a thin barrier in the soil that stops weeds from emerging after the seeds germinate.”

With a pre-emergent herbicide, they must be applied before crabgrass seeds begin to germinate in late spring to be effective. “Timing is critical for prevention, as crabgrass will start germinating once soil temperatures reach 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit for a few days straight,” she adds.

5. Use Boiling Water

If you notice that there is crabgrass in isolated areas on your lawn, then you could opt to use boiling water.

“Boiling water will kill crabgrass by rupturing its cell structure and resulting in dehydration, wilting and death,” says Bradley. “It’s only advisable to use boiling water when you have crabgrass growing in pathways, between paving slabs etc. where it is isolated enough that the water will only kill the weed and not any surrounding plants.”

This is a budget-friendly and low-lift option that is not only highly effective, but also easy to do, especially for beginner gardeners. 

Aside from boiling water, you can also opt for something more natural like corn gluten meal on your lawn to prevent crabgrass seeds from germinating. This method works best in dry weather as the presence of excessive rain would cause it to disappear and become ineffective.

A young entertainer stepped onto a stage on May 6, 1941, at March Field in California and made history. Bob Hope performed his very first show for the United Service Organizations (USO), beginning a decades-long mission to bring laughter and comfort to American troops. 

Eighty-five years later, that first performance is remembered as the start of one of the most meaningful entertainment traditions in military history.

Hope’s debut USO show came months before the United States officially entered World War II. At the time, he was already gaining fame from hit films like The Cat and the Canary (1939) and The Road to Singapore (1940). But his appearance at March Field marked a turning point.

From that day forward, Hope made it his mission to perform for service members wherever they were. What began as a single radio show in California soon grew into tours across the country and eventually around the world.

Hope’s first show was warmly received by troops, encouraging him to continue. When the U.S. joined World War II later that year, he committed himself to working closely with the USO. Over the next 18 months, he traveled to military bases across America, performing for thousands of service members preparing for war.

Soon, his reach extended overseas. Hope brought shows directly to soldiers stationed in Europe and the Pacific, often performing near front lines. His goal was simple: to make troops laugh and feel closer to home.

He didn’t do it alone. Over time, he built a team of regular performers, including singer Frances Langford, musician Tony Romano and comedian Jerry Colonna, according to the USO website. His longtime film partner Bing Crosby also joined several tours.

Hope’s dedication stood out. Even as his Hollywood career soared, he continued to prioritize entertaining troops. Between 1941 and 1991, he completed 57 USO tours, reaching service members in major conflicts including World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

After World War II, Hope did not slow down. He remained a steady presence for the military during difficult times. During the Berlin Airlift in 1948 and the Korean War starting in 1950, he once again joined USO efforts to support troops.

He also created a new tradition: holiday specials for service members. Starting in 1950, Hope filmed Christmas shows in military locations around the world. These programs became a yearly event, giving troops a sense of celebration even while far from home.

One of his most famous efforts came during the Vietnam War, when he recorded multiple holiday shows for troops. Despite public controversy surrounding the war, Hope continued to perform, showing unwavering support for service members.

Between 1964 and 1972, he filmed nine Christmas specials in Vietnam, with one 1970 broadcast becoming one of the most-watched television events in U.S. history.

Although Hope never served in the military, his impact was widely recognized. In 1997, the U.S. Congress honored him as an honorary veteran, a rare distinction given for his lifelong support of the armed forces.

The biggest selling point for Flights by Royal is the "Assured Arrival" guarantee. In an era of unpredictable delays, Royal Caribbean’s team monitors your flights and, if things go sideways, they take on the burden of rebooking you. If you can’t make it to the ship before it leaves the dock, they’ll even coordinate your travel to the first port of call. Cruisers on the Cruise Critic forums point out that this "peace of mind" is the primary reason to stick with the cruise line.

As one user, PNFL, noted: "My thought was with the airlines canceling so many flights lately it will be up to the cruise line to get new flights."

Another advantage is the "Book Now, Pay Later" flexibility. You can lock in your airfare when you book your cruise, but don’t have to pay for the tickets until your final cruise payment is due (usually 75 to 120 days before sailing).

The Trade-Off: Cost vs. Control

The consensus among seasoned travelers on the Cruise Critic boards is far from unanimous. While some wouldn't dream of booking any other way, others argue that the convenience comes at too high a price—both in dollars and in personal control. Here's how the pros and cons stack up based on the latest cruiser feedback:

• The "East Coast to Europe" Score: For long-haul hops, the cruise line often wins on pure value. One member flying out of Boston’s Logan Airport noted they have "never been able to get flights as cheaply" as the cruise company when heading to Europe, often scoring non-stops for less than the public fare.
• The Control Crisis: The biggest gripe from skeptics is the "bulk rate" nature of the tickets. As one member warned, "if you allow the cruise line to book your flights, you give up all control." This often means you can't see your specific flight times or choose a seat until the cruise line officially "tickets" the reservation, which sometimes doesn't happen until 30 days before departure.
• The Transfer Toss-Up: Usually, booking through the line includes a representative meeting you at the baggage claim to whisk you to the ship. While this removes the first-day stress for many, experienced travelers point out a major catch: if you deviate by flying in a few days early to explore the city, you often lose those free transfers and may be hit with an extra "deviation fee."
• Flexible Fares vs. Re-issue Fees: While Royal Caribbean's "FLEX" fare allows for no-money-down booking, some travelers found that once the ticket is finalized, the cruise line may charge a re-issue fee (sometimes around $100) for changes—whereas many major airlines have moved to a permanent "no change fee" model for direct bookings.
• The Safety Net: Despite the potential for higher costs, many stick with the program for the "guaranteed arrival." With current flight volatility, members noted it was comforting to know that if a connection is missed, it's the cruise line's responsibility—not theirs—to get them to the next port.

The Expert Take

Ultimately, booking through cruiseline airfare programs like Flights by Royal are buying an extra layer of insurance. If you're flying into a tricky international port or traveling during a season prone to weather delays, the "Assured Arrival" guarantee might be worth the extra cost.

However, if you're a "seat snob" who needs to pick a specific row the moment tickets go on sale, or if you're finding a significantly cheaper fare on your own, you might prefer the control of a direct booking. As with all things travel, the best move is to price out both options and decide if the peace of mind fits your budget.

Two years after terrifying audiences across the globe, Nicolas Cage's spellbinding horror movieLonglegs is officially getting a sequel.

According to Deadline, the upcoming sequel is reportedly being planned for release on January 14, 2028.

As of yet, it's not clear whether Cage will reprise his role as the eccentric title character from the original film. However, the National Treasure star is expected to serve as a producer on the project, alongside Longlegs director Osgood Perkins and fellow producers Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Chris Ferguson and Dave Caplan.

Similarly, the plot to the enigmatic horror movie is being kept tightly under wraps. More details about cast and crew are likely to make their way into the public spotlight as the months roll on and production for the project continues.

Sometimes described as the "scariest films of the decade," Longlegs quickly made a lasting impression on audience members for its tense atmosphere, persistent psychological horror and Cage's predictably off-kilter portrayal of the title character: a Satanic murderer who harbors more secrets than viewers might expect.

Set in the 1990s, the original Longlegs followed a young FBI agent (Maika Monroe) as she investigated Longlegs' various crimes, uncovering some unsettling connections between herself and the enigmatic serial killer.

Released on July 8, 2024, Longlegs immediately enjoyed a successful theatrical debut, thanks in large part to the heavily advertised transformation of Cage into the movie's demonic, near unrecognizable main antagonist.

Above all else, many complimented the movie for balancing out its various genres, as well as the inherent horror at the heart of director Osgood Perkins' film.

With the first week of May behind us, we're officially halfway to the holiday and the company behind some of the biggest brands of the season, Mars Inc., is giving fans some sweet news to savor over the next five or so months.

This morning, the century-old candy company revealed it has plans to launch a "creepy" new Skittles variety and a "hauntingly fun" new Twix. It also confirmed plans to return a few fall favorites from M&M's, Snickers, and more.

"Halfway to Halloween has become a treasured tradition at Mars," Tim LeBel, chief Halloween officer and chief customer officer at Mars Snacking North America, shared in a statement.

"Our 2026 portfolio is a direct reflection of what consumers are telling us they want: new textures and experiences, along with beloved classics," LeBel added, "As a result, this year’s lineup has something for everyone, no matter where or when they choose to celebrate the season."

New Twix and Skittles Innovations to Debut This Fall

Debuting later this year are the all-new Skittles Pop'd Creepy Crunch and Twix Skulls.

The new Skittles Pop'd Creepy Crunch takes the original treats for a freeze-dried spin and offers a superiorly crunchy, airy, and crispy confection (similar to the M&M's Pop’d Caramel variety it dropped this past October), as you may have guessed by its name.

The new Twix shape also sounds like exactly what it is: a skull-shaped Twix candy bar perfect for trick-or-treaters, Halloween parties and Día de los Muertos celebrations. While it may sound like a simple update, fans look out for the seasonal shapes every year, as the ratio of cookie to caramel and chocolate may differ from the original, often leading to unique texture and taste experiences.

As for those returning favorites, fans will be able to enjoy the "amazing" Pumpkin Pie M&M's by the handful and its adorable pumpkin-shaped Snickers again this year. Even better, Snickers Pumpkins will now be available in Fun Size!

Mars also announced it would bring back its Ghoulish Green Twix and Snickers, M&M's Halloween Blends (to be available in Milk Chocolate, Peanut and Peanut Butter Varieties), along with its limited-edition, sour Skittles Shriekers.

All of the treats are expected to be available at major retailers like Target and Walmart, as well as grocery chains nationwide, this fall. When exactly the company plans to roll out all of its Halloween innovations is currently unclear, but if retailers are following similar timelines to past years, shoppers have spotted the seasonal treats and decor as early as mid-July (also known as "Summerween), so it may become available much earlier than you'd expect—only time will tell.

When you think of Sweetgreen, what’s the first thing to come to mind? Probably salads, maybe bowls with rice or quinoa, or if you’ve been a long-time fan, perhaps soft serve for dessert. 

Now, the fast casual chain is leaning into an emerging trend with its largest category expansion to date, introducing wraps to its national menu. After market testing the handheld food in New York, Los Angeles, and the Midwest, Sweetgreen has officially put four kinds of wraps on its national menu.

The flavors come wrapped in tortillas, which are made with extra-virgin olive oil and are free of seed oils and preservatives. Priced at under $15 each and delivering over 40 grams of protein, the wraps come in three classic flavors, plus a limited-time flavor through the better part of the summer.

There’s the Classic Chicken Caesar, with antibiotic-free roasted chicken, parmesan crisps, shaved parmesan, garlic breadcrumbs, and chopped romaine, tossed in Caesar dressing with a squeeze of lemon. The Chicken Jalapeño Ranch feels more like a burrito with its antibiotic-free roasted chicken, warm white rice, corn salsa, white cheddar, and pickled onions, finished with spicy charred jalapeño ranch. The Cali Chicken Club comes with antibiotic-free roasted chicken, avocado, crumbled bacon, tomatoes, and chopped romaine, and is finished with garlic aioli.

Through August 11, customers will also be able to try the KBBQ Chicken wrap, which comes with antibiotic-free roasted chicken, white rice, napa cabbage slaw, apple kimchi sauce, and crispy onions, finished with KBBQ drizzle.

“We spent over a year making sure we got this right, from the custom extra virgin olive oil tortilla to the bold flavors in every bite. Wraps are a new way to experience Sweetgreen, built around a lineup of familiar favorites reimagined with the same high quality fresh ingredients we’re known for,” Nic Jammet, Chief Concept Officer and Sweetgreen co-Founder told Parade. “Wraps tackle everyday cravings so we wanted to pair that with a price point that allowed our customers to come back again and again. Wraps start at $10.45 at certain locations, with the full lineup priced below $15 when ordering in-store and for pickup on our app.”

Sweetgreen isn’t the only major chain leaning into wraps, as Jimmy Johns brought back its “most loved” wrap, the Thai Chicken Wrap, for the summer, and Popeyes added the formerly limited-time wrap onto its permanent menu, complete with a new flavor.

Summer House star KJ Dillard turned a routine reunion aftershock into a full-on breaking-news moment on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen when he revealed he’d finally received a message from West Wilson… then casually decided to read the text to the studio audience.

KJ previously wrote on Threads that he hadn't received a message from West after West said on a podcast he'd reached out to the cast about the explosive news he was dating Amanda Batula.

"He texted me the day after the reunion, and I didn't even look at the message...I was a bit scared to look at it," KJ admitted. Pulling out his phone, KJ teased, "Wait, should I read it right now?"

As the audience literally screamed and host Andy Cohen covered his face, KJ started reading the text—silently— to take in the message before considering if he'd read it to the viewers.

Admitting the message was long, KJ read the text to himself as his girlfriend, Dara Levitan, sat in the audience, sharing with Andy that the reunion was beyond intense.

Andy turns to KJ, asking about the text. "I'll read it," he said, giggling. "West says, 'I wanted to thank you for your articulation and kindness yesterday, despite being hurt. I've been off social, and I think I lost touch with how much hurt there was. I'm incredibly sorry. Also, sending you love in regards to your mental health. You shared a lot yesterday and I know it might carry much weight now, but I'm always rooting for the best for you. I know it will take some time, but whenever you feel like you're ready, lunch or a phone call would mean a lot in the spirit of healing. No need to respond. Take your time.'"

Leaning back in his chair, KJ reflected on the message's impact. "That really hurts," he said. "It just hurts because it's like me and him were so close."

KJ previously told Parade—before West and Amanda began dating—that he had hoped West and Ciara Miller might rekindle their romance, adding that he viewed Ciara as a big sister and West as a big brother.

"That’s big sister, and that’s big brother. I love them both, and I really want them to get married,” he laughed. “But West, he’s gotta settle down. Time will tell. I know he loves Ciara, though.”

In a new television special set to air on the CW on Wednesday, May 6, criminal profilers Dr. Ann Burgess, Dr. Gary Brocato, and Dr. Casey Jordan sat down with NewsNation's Brian Entin to examine the Nancy Guthrie case.

Exclusive clips provided to Parade show the three experts agreeing the suspect likely knew or knew of Guthrie before the abduction, though they do not believe she knew them.

Dr. Burgess began by suggesting the suspect likely knew of Guthrie in some capacity, saying that the suspect likely "knows her in some way," adding, "I wouldn’t think that Nancy Guthrie knew this person."

"I agree this person knew her," Dr. Jordan added. "I don’t think she knew this person. Knew of her. And it could have been, we have to consider, it could have been somebody who saw her on the 'Today' show with her daughter, Savannah, maybe not even have met her. Could have been an Uber driver that she didn’t leave a big enough tip for. Could have been any of hundreds of service workers, I mean, she has been in this house since the ‘70s."

Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. The Pima County Sheriff's Department has renewed its plea to the public, asking anyone with information to come forward, saying even the smallest tip could prove significant.

But the truth is, Lakshmi has been boldly serving up success for decades. She began her career as a model and transitioned into food after becoming the host of Padma’s Passport, on which she cooked diverse cuisine from around the world, and Planet Food, a documentary series, both on the Food Network.

“There was no forethought,” she tells Parade. “There was just a push against the open door to take advantage of the opportunities that came to me. I had studied theater and literature, and I thought I was going to have a career as an actor.”

Still, the acting training paid off as she used her skills in front of the camera to build her culinary TV resumé. After leaving Top Chef, she created Taste the Nation, which won a 2021 Critics' Choice Real TV Award for Best Culinary Series. But the main dish is her new hit CBS series America’s Culinary Cup, where she was involved in every aspect of its development with her producing partners. That includes such minute details as selecting the thread used to embroider the names on the chefs’ coats and even the design of the winner’s trophy.

“I created this show exactly how I wanted to see a culinary competition show executed,” the 55-year-old says. “I'm very proud of the success and legacy that my other show has and that I've also helped build. But I wanted to refresh the genre. I wanted to take out all the gimmicks and the tricks that most competition shows throw in. I wanted to simplify it, bring it to a fresh and modern new start.”

In doing so, Lakshmi decided to challenge the 16 competing chefs with what she labeled "Culinary Commandments": Meat, vegetables, sauces, dessert, innovation, flavors, sustainability, world cuisine, consistency, and culinary science/technology.

“Each episode is different and structured, designed around one culinary commandment or principle of fine cooking,” she explains. “I think the biggest difference between our show and other competition shows is that we don't throw in obstacles. We give them all the weapons they need to succeed, provide them with an unparalleled kitchen with as many beautiful ingredients as they could want, and enough equipment to go around.”

America’s Culinary Cup, which airs Wednesday nights on CBS, drops its finale on May 13, and one talented chef will walk away with $1 million, the largest monetary prize for a culinary competition show. The path from the series premiere to its upcoming finale was not a direct one, but rather a winding road.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Padma Lakshmi (7:14)

“There are so many twists and turns as you go through the season that even though I was there tasting the food and part of the judging process, I certainly didn't know how my two co-judges—Wylie Dufresne and Michael Cimarusti—would score,” Lakshmi says. “But there were things that surprised me. For instance, I had tasted Chris Morgan's food, and I was surprised that he was voted the least likely to win by his fellow competitors. And I was also very surprised that Beverly Kim [who was voted most likely to win] went home when she did, because she had been such a strong competitor and was so compelling the whole way through.”

There’s a lot of food on America’s Culinary Cup, and a lot of calories that come with it. And while that may not have been an issue for Lakshmi in her modeling days, it’s changed now at age 55. And that was actually something she took into consideration when developing the challenges.

“Models are usually freaks of nature,” she says. “They are models because they are extraordinary human beings physically. And part of being extraordinary is also your metabolism, so a lot of models are just naturally thin. When I was younger, I could eat anything and not gain weight. I was lucky, you know? Now it's about hard work.”

To help keep the hard work in the gym to a minimum, Lakshmi says she made sure that the chefs knew that, other than specific areas where they were judging for consistency, they knew they only needed to make tasting portions. So she’s usually taking one or two bites of something, three at the most.

“I want to pace myself. But I do go back for another bite if I'm unsure or if I didn't get that perfect bite of a little bit of everything on my fork,” she says. “It just depends. But I am cognizant of the fact that I don't want to get too full. But even if I am full, I still have to taste it thoroughly enough to judge it properly.”

When structuring the CBS culinary competition, Lakshmi focused on American chefs, which also reflects her most recent cookbook, Padma's All American: Tales, Travels, and Recipes from Taste the Nation and Beyond.

“What I love about American cuisine is that it's this living, changing, developing organism,” she says about the new work. “People don't realize how regional American food is. It's a vast country where all kinds of things grow depending on where you live. And there's so many different influences on American food that, to me, it's the most exciting food in the world for that reason.”

Born in India on September 1, 1970, Lakshmi immigrated to the United States with her mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, an oncology nurse, when she was three. She first resided in New York City, later spending her high school years in La Puente, CA, where she lived with her mother and stepfather.

Lakshmi graduated from Clark University with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and American Literature and began her modeling career at age 21, becoming India’s first supermodel. When an agent discovered Lakshmi while she was studying in Madrid, that blossomed into her work on TV. Her on-screen appearances then expanded into cookbooks, including Easy Exotic; Tangy, Tart, Hot & Sweet; The Encyclopedia of Spices & Herbs; and her New York Times best-selling memoir Love, Loss, and What We Ate, and children’s book Tomatoes of Neela.

America’s Culinary Cup has yet to be picked up for its second season by CBS. But that’s not a problem for Lakshmi, who has many other projects on her plate. Notably, that includes her work with the United Nations Development Program, which takes her into a variety of communities to work with local leaders on various initiatives.

“What we've found in our research is that when you give women in a community the resources, it trickles down to everyone rather than [giving it to] the males,” she says.  “We've also found that there's still a lot of sexism and chauvinism in the world. Not just in rural communities, but in very developed places. My job with them is to assist in bringing attention to their work more than anything, and it's been a privilege to do that.”

The biggest change of pace, however, is that Lakshmi recently tried her hand at stand-up and took improv classes as well. While comedy is currently on the back burner due to both America’s Culinary Cup and the scripted projects she has in development with her production company, she isn't forsaking it at all.

“I'm hoping that at least one or two of the [development projects] come to fruition in the next year,” she says. “I have been writing comedy and testing it out a little bit in local clubs and just wetting my feet.”

On top of her busy work schedule, Lakshmi is also a single mom. Daughter Krishna (whom she had with venture capitalist Adam Dell) is 16 years old and currently attends a New York City performing arts high school, no doubt following in her mother’s footsteps.

“I try to tell her that she should remember that it's about making the art, not about being famous or living a certain lifestyle,” Lakshmi says. “It's really about the hard work and artists, whether they're writers or actors or painters or singers—she's a songwriter, too—they are trying to illuminate or trying to tell us something about ourselves or each other. They're trying to reveal something about the world. And in order to do that, she has to find out about the world.”

It's safe to say that between being an Emmy-nominated TV host, food expert, bestselling author, producer, and activist, she's discovered that self-care is essential. Exercise helps her feel grounded and stronger, both physically and mentally.

“It's the only time that I really focus without being tested or emailed or called or having to answer to anybody,” she says. “I'm lucky enough to be able to afford to go to the gym and have the time in my schedule to do it. I don't take that lightly. Rather, I try to remember that, so on that morning that I don't want to get up and go to the gym, I remember that it's a privilege that many people don't have, and it helps to get my butt out of that bed.”

That, of course, leads to a question that fans of food competition shows always are dying to know. When you're not judging, what are you eating?

“Sixty percent of my diet is fruits and vegetables," Lakshmi reveals. “I'm lucky. I happen to love fruits and vegetables most, so it's not a chore for me. I try not to drink too much, I don't eat a lot of red meat, I don't eat a lot of sweets, I don't eat a lot of flour. I eat dairy, but I'm a very simple eater. Obviously, I'm a normal person, so I'll go out and have two margaritas and a cheeseburger and fries as well for dinner. But then the couple of nights after that, I’ll probably have something much more humble and clean and healthy.”

“I never feel guilty about taking any pleasure," she continues. "But occasionally, I will take a handful of flaming hot Cheetos from my daughter or eat a bite of her corndog. You want a life of balance."

Indeed, between her time back on reality TV, her work behind the scenes, her writing, her family and her activism, it seems Padma Lakshmi's set of skills, like any good diet, is incredibly balanced.

An expert notes that while his cousins are being raised within the traditional structure of royal duties and public life, Archie is growing up with a more private and low-profile upbringing.

Express quoted a specialist in UK Constitutional Law, Dr. Craig Prescott, who pointed out the differences in Archie's royal role versus his royal cousins.

"This is quite a unique situation," Prescott explained. "Given their future roles, the Prince and Princess of Wales have carefully introduced their children to conducting royal duties and attending the largest events, such as Trooping the Color. However, for obvious reasons, this has not been the case for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

He continued, "It seems to me very doubtful that Prince Archie and Princess Lillibet will ever conduct public duties. And that they will ostensibly live out their lives in America as private citizens, despite having the title."

While Archie has a title for the foreseeable future, Prescott believes that when William becomes king, he may further streamline the monarchy by only allowing working royals to have titles.

"We now have the precedent of the 'Princely status' being removed from someone with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, which shows that it could be done. We have moved towards a monarchy where titles and HRH status are increasingly connected to conducting public duties, and Prince William, when King, may wish to further that connection," he explained.

Prince Archie was born on May 6, 2019, at the Portland Hospital in London, England. He is currently sixth in line for the British throne.

Disney Worldhas evolved tremendously since its opening over 50 years ago, so much so that heading to the parks without any sort of plan or strategy isn’t entirely a good idea. From having to book restaurant reservations 60 days in advance to scheduling lightning lanes for your favorite rides, there’s a lot of pressure when it comes to making sure you have a great time in the most magical place on earth.

Recently, there is a strategy that has become extremely popular amongst Disney World park goers. This is called the 3-2-1 Disney Hack. To follow this, you choose three must-do rides, two must-do entertainment options, and one dining experience. The idea behind following this is to create a tiny bit of structure for your day, ensuring that you hit some of your favorite things in the parks, but it also leaves room for spontaneity.

While I do think that this idea is wonderful in theory—I realized that it wouldn’t be possible for my family’s Disney World trip. I have a large family of 10 that travels to Disney World every couple of years together. That is extremely different from the people who go a few times a year, sometimes with a much smaller group of people. For them, the 3-2-1 method works perfectly, but for us, it simply wouldn’t be an option.

We Couldn’t All Agree On What To Do

My family of 10 ranges in ages from 2 to 66. Some experiences are great for the 2-year-old, while others are great for the grandparents, and some are great for the in-between folks. Ultimately, however, we want to experience everything together. It wouldn’t be a family vacation if we all were simply running around to the attractions that we specifically wanted to enjoy, missing out on making memories as a family.

If we had to choose just three top attractions to enjoy–that would be incredibly hard to do. Instead, we all discussed our “must-do” rides, and made a sheet in Excel. Then, we looked at which rides tend to have the longest lines throughout the day. For those rides, we booked lightning lanes one week ahead of time. We were able to book three rides per park day. After that, we had a list of the other rides we wanted to hit. After each lightning lane was redeemed on the day of our park visit, we were able to reserve another one in the app. Ultimately, we ended up doing about 5 to 6 rides, scheduled through lightning lanes, on each park day.

In Magic Kingdom, my family rode 6 rides before 1pm.

As for entertainment, we simply fit in the shows or parades that were possible to go to in between our scheduled lightning lane rides. My family tried to experience as many of the entertainment options as possible, especially to appease the younger children in our group. This was something that we more-so did “on the fly”. Some days we were able to see three different shows or parades, and some days we didn’t see any.

Choosing one dining option is the one aspect of this method that I can get on board with. Since reservations are made 60 days in advance, and spots can fill up quickly, planning one special meal in each park is definitely a great idea. My family discussed what our most coveted options were for each park, and we tried to make sure that each person got to go to at least one of their favorite restaurants at some point throughout the week.

We Want Our Money’s Worth

Ultimately, if you only visit Disney once every few years, you’re going to want to experience as much as you possibly can. These trips can cost thousands of dollars–and it wouldn’t necessarily feel worth it if you didn’t take advantage of every second of the day.

Every family is different. Some, like mine, prioritize rides. If that’s the case, only planning on three and “seeing where the rest fall” isn’t going to guarantee that you hit all of your favorites. Instead, strategic planning must be used. The use of lightning lanes, checking the Disney World app for standby line times, and skipping a parade or show might be necessary to make it happen.

Other families love to see as many shows and parades as possible. When this is the case, that can make riding multiple rides in one day a bit tricky. But, if you’re only going to Disney World once every so often–would you really want to risk missing your favorite firework castle show or mid-day parade? You need to make the trip worth the money that you’re spending on it.

My family planned each second of our day out, and it worked beautifully!

I truly do see how this method could be great for a family that goes to Disney World multiple times a year. They don’t feel the stress of “having to get it all in” when visiting the parks. If they miss their favorite attraction, they can simply make sure they hit it next time. For my family, however, the “next time” is years away–and we simply want to experience as much as we can while we’re there.
