French Soccer Star Kylian Mbappé Calls Out 'Despicable' Paraguayan Senator Over Racist Posts
Kylian Mbappé is slamming Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla for her racist comments after France's 2026 World Cup win over Paraguay.
The comments, which saw Amarilla, 61, call Mbappé, 27, a "colonized Cameroonian," came after a contentious game between the two on Saturday, in which France defeated Paraguay 1-0 to advance to the quarter-finals.
"Cameroonian colonized, pretending hard to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant and ugly," Amarilla captioned the post, which was translated from Spanish to English. "He was nervous and scared to death the whole game, like his whole team. They couldn't score a goal. They won by penalty."
The senator's comments didn't stop there. Amarilla said she wished the team, nicknamed La Albirroja, had slapped Mbappé with an "open hand" after the match.
She continued, "The only thing that many of us complain about Albirroja is that we didn't slap him with an open hand after the match ended. And that I'm not a fan of football."
Amarilla, who, per The Athletic, has served in the Senate of the Republic of Paraguay since 2023, made more racist remarks about Mbappé on X earlier that evening, referring to him as a "brute" who "didn't even learn to write." She also compared him to a chimpanzee, writing that "instead of mother's milk, he sucked on coconuts."
— Celeste Senadora (@CelesteSenadora) July 5, 2026The French national team captain responded to Amarilla on Monday, July 6, also taking to X, where he called her a "despicable woman" who does not represent Paraguay or its national team.
"Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position," Mbappé wrote in the post, which was translated from French to English. "You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honor throughout the competition."
The soccer star continued, "Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country."
Madame Celeste Amarilla,
The French Football Federation (FFF) also issued a statement on Monday defending the Paris-born player and calling Amarilla's "racist" remarks "completely abusive and unacceptable."
"How can one hold such a speech? These words are disgraceful and reprehensible," the FFF's press release read. "They must be prosecuted here as well as elsewhere. The FFF is reporting this matter to the prosecutor's office for the purpose of prosecution."
The organization added that it "gives its full support to its captain, players and, more generally, to all victims of such hateful words."
"These words dishonor those who utter them and those who spread them," the statement concluded. "The players of the Équipe de France represent France. It's our country that is being insulted."

Hit '90s Series With 8 Seasons Has Weeks Left on Netflix
Fans of classic sitcoms who have access to Netflix have only weeks left before a beloved TV series leaves the platform, as Home Improvement is joining a bunch of other movies and TV shows leaving the streamer on Aug. 1.
The show, which ran from 1991 to 1999 and has a total of eight seasons, stars Tim Allen as Tim Taylor, a family man who has his own show called "Tool Time." As with a lot of sitcoms, the plot follows Tim amid his chaotic life with his wife Jill, played by Patricia Richardson, and their three kids. This includes the oldest named Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), the middle child Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and the youngest, Mark (Taran Noah Smith).
While the show aired in the 1990s, it still has plenty of fans, both new and old, and it finally came to Netflix in early 2025. But for those who have had Home Improvement on their watchlist and still haven't started it, they need to get on it now. All eight seasons will be gone by the start of next month.
Home Improvement isn't the only show or film leaving in August. Other shows include Fear the Walking Dead, A Discovery of Witches, and Better Than Us, among others. Some notable movies also disappearing from the platform are Triple 9, 27 Dresses, Father of the Bride, Ouija, Pretty Woman, and many more.
While it's possible that Home Improvement could return to Netflix in the future with another streaming deal, it likely wouldn't be anytime soon.

A reboot series of Home Improvement has also been in talks for a while now, but it's currently paused due to difficulties securing original cast members, according to Allen's comments about the project in a recent interview with Us Weekly.
He told the publication, "They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys... That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly." It remains to be seen if the reboot ever gets off the ground.

1972 Soft Rock Classic, With Iconic Harmonica Riff, Became One of the Era's Greatest Love Songs
As Joni Mitchell once said, she "was an albums artist, not a singles artist. And that’s got nothing to do with the hit parade.” Of course, Mitchell became one of the most legendary singer-songwriters of her generation even without any number one hits...but that doesn't mean she didn't know how to write one.
After Mitchell's managers, David Geffen and Elliot Roberts, started Asylum Records, she signed with the fledgling label to record her classic 1972 album For the Roses. According to Rolling Stone, when Geffen tried to persuade Mitchell to write a hit single, she rose to the occasion with the sweet, almost silly love song, "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio."
While Geffen later said "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" was "almost kind of making fun of my attempt for her to write a hit record,” the song still stands as one of Mitchell's beloved. It also happens to feature another iconic musician on the harmonica: Graham Nash.
"I've never had a hit record in America so I got together with some friends and we decided we were going to make this hit — conjure up this bit of magic for AM radio, destined to appeal to DJs," Mitchell explained in a 1972 interview with Sounds Magazine.
"Graham and David [Crosby] came and Neil [Young] lent me his band and he came and played some guitar and somehow it didn't work," she continued. "There were too many chefs you know. We had a terrific evening, a lot of fun, and the track is nice, but it's just...it's like when you do a movie with a cast of thousands. Somehow I prefer movies with unknowns. So I'm going to start looking for people who are untried, who have a different kind of enthusiasm that comes from wanting to support the artist."
In the end, only Nash's unforgettable harmonica riff can be heard on the track that made the album, though Mitchell released a demo version of "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" in 2023 with Young on guitar.
Joni MitchellGijsbert Hanekroot / Getty Images
Mitchell went on to say that before writing the tune, she "decided there were some ways to make a hit, increase the chances."
“DJs have to like it, so you put a long part at the beginning and the end so the DJs can talk over it. Take a tender situation and translate it into commonly appealing songs for the DJs. It’d have to be a bit corny," she quipped, per Far Out.
Indeed, Mitchell even called herself out in the lyrics:
If you're driving into town with a dark cloud above you
Dial in the number who's bound to love you
Oh honey, you turn me on, I'm a radio
I'm a country station, I'm a little bit corny
I'm a Wildwood flower waving for you
Broadcasting tower waving for you
While "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" didn't exactly top the charts, it did end up qualifying as a hit: The song peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and #10 in Canada and spent a total 16 weeks on the charts.
David Beckham's Reported $25 Million World Cup Ad Takeover Has Fans Divided
David Beckham may not be playing in this year's World Cup, but fans are joking that he's still getting more screen time than some of the players.
The former England captain has been popping up throughout the tournament in a string of high-profile ads, prompting mixed reactions from viewers who say they can't seem to get through a commercial break without seeing him (which, for the record, is true).
In fact, the 51-year-old appears in ads for several major brands during the World Cup, including Bank of America, Lay's, Home Depot, McDonald's, Stella Artois and Adidas.
Market analysts have estimated, per The Sun, that Beckham could earn around £19 million from endorsements tied to the tournament (which is equivalent to about $25 million U.S. dollars). Marketing Made Clear told the outlet, "Brands work with Beckham because he is dependable and recognisable."
And during Monday night’s match between the U.S. and Belgium, fans couldn’t help but sound off online about Beck’s air time.
“David Beckham is the real MVP of this world cup. The amount of ads this man in his money niceeee,” one quipped on X.
“David Beckham has never actually shopped in a Home Depot,” another fan noted.
A third said, “I can't wait for David Beckham to go back into the Disney Vault for commercials for a while.”
“Yes I very much enjoy David Beckham in every ad,” a fourth replied.
The East London-born soccer legend retired from the sport in 2013. Since then, he has continued to build a massive business empire, including his role as co-owner of Inter Miami.
His heavy presence during the U.S.-hosted tournament comes as another soccer icon is preparing to say goodbye to the World Cup stage. Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed ahead of Portugal's Round of 16 match against Spain on Sunday, July 5, that the 2026 tournament will be his last.
"It's about enjoying it as much as possible," Ronaldo said, per ESPN. "This will be my last World Cup, but let's hope tomorrow isn't my last game." The 41-year-old added that he will eventually step away from international football with no regrets. "I play football because I love it… You have to enjoy every day. And I've scored three goals [at this World Cup], I'm not doing too badly, right?"

'70s Soft Rock Legend and Member of Iconic Rock Band Turns 81
July 6 marks a special milestone for one of the unsung heroes of 1970s soft rock.
Rik Elswit, the longtime guitarist for Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, turns 81 today. Best known for his distinctive guitar work and decades with the beloved band, Elswit helped craft the sound behind many of Dr. Hook's biggest hits, leaving a lasting mark on one of the era's most recognizable groups.
Elswit joined Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show during the band's rise to national prominence in the early 1970s. Originally formed by Ray Sawyer, Dennis Locorriere, Billy Francis, George Cummings and Jay David, the group blended rock, country, pop and humor into a style all its own, quickly earning a devoted following.
Interestingly, it was beloved author, poet and musician Shel Silverstein who introduced Elswit to his would-be bandmates.
"I knew Shel because a folk rock band I was in, Ripple, had a very pretty brunette bass player," Elswit told the Marin Independent Journal. "So hed show up at Gatsby's (a popular Caledonia Street restaurant in Sausalito that had live music in the '70s) on Sunday afternoons and watch us. One day he came into the music store where I was teaching guitar and told me the guys in Dr. Hook were looking for a guitar player, and would I see what I could do. After I spent a week trying to find someone, I told Shel I hadn't found anyone yet. He said, 'No, you idiot. You. Go there. Go to their rehearsal tonight.' I did, and I got the gig."
As the band's lead guitarist, Elswit became an integral part of its evolving sound. His tasteful playing complemented the group's vocal harmonies and helped bring to life a string of enduring hits, including "Only Sixteen," "A Little Bit More," "Sharing the Night Together," "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" and "Sexy Eyes." Those songs helped transform Dr. Hook from an offbeat country-rock act into one of the most successful soft rock bands of the decade.
The band's crossover appeal made it a fixture on both pop and adult contemporary radio throughout the late 1970s. With memorable melodies, relatable lyrics and polished musicianship, Dr. Hook built a catalog that continues to resonate with listeners decades later.
Although the group underwent lineup changes over the years, Elswit remained one of its longest-serving members, contributing to both its live performances and studio recordings. His steady presence helped maintain the band's signature sound through its most successful period and beyond.
Today, Dr. Hook's music remains a staple of classic hits and soft rock radio, introducing songs like "Sharing the Night Together" and "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" to new generations of listeners. Elswit's guitar work continues to be an essential part of those timeless recordings.
"I've made my living in rock and roll, worked almost every bar in San Francisco, probably putting number of them out of business, and have a number of gold singles to my credit as a member of Dr. Hook," Elswit said. "But the music I make for love has always been roots music, country and blues, and I specialize in banjo, three-finger and clawhammer, and in thumbstyle guitar."
As Rik Elswit celebrates his 81st birthday on July 6, fans are recognizing a musician whose contributions helped define the sound of 1970s soft rock. While he may not have always occupied center stage, his playing remains woven into some of the decade’s most beloved and enduring classics.

Trump's 'So Hot' Remark About Nicki Minaj at White House Luncheon Sparks Backlash Online
She's calling herself White House Barbie! Nicki Minaj joined the president at a White House Rose Garden luncheon on Monday afternoon, andDonald Trumphad some very complimentary things to say about the rap star.
Trump introduced Minaj by showering her with praise: “We also have a woman that is so respected and so hot and so great and such a great friend of, I don’t say conservative; I say of common sense.” The president continued, “She’s a fantastic person, and she’s a woman that’s respected by everybody, and she’s got real talent.”
And, based on a recent X post, Minaj is giving that praise right back. The rapper shared a photo of herself in the Oval Office with Trump, writing, “Whoa!!!! #WhiteHouseBarbie with her favorite President of all time!!!!”
Whoa!!!! #WhiteHouseBarbie with her favorite President of all time!!! 🙌🏽🇺🇸♥️ pic.twitter.com/Kz7GJxEds0
— Nicki Minaj (@NICKIMINAJ) July 6, 2026 What did fans think of Nicki Minaj’s visit to the White House and Trump's comments?Minaj’s White House appearance shouldn't come as a surprise. This isn’t the first time the unlikely pairing has publicly supported one another. In 2025, the celeb thanked the commander in chief while speaking on a United Nations panel (Combating Religious Violence and the Killing of Christians in Nigeria), “I would like to thank President Trump for priotitizing this issue and for his leadership on the global stage in calling for urgent action to defend Christians in Nigeria, to combat extermism and to bring a stop to violence agaisnt those who simply want to exrecise their natural right to freedom of religion or belief.”
In January of 2026, Minaj applauded Trump again, saying at a U.S. Treasury event celebrating Trump Accounts (which launched recently), “I am probably the president’s number one fan, and that’s not going to change.” She addressed her critics, adding, “The hate or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more.”
And yes, it does look like some hate is coming her way for spending time with Trump. Critics took to her X post, writing, “You are going to regret this in a few years” and “How come you weren't invited to perform at his so awesome freedumb festival?”
Of course, plenty of fans approved of her White House visit, commenting, “Congratulations! You deserve this and so much more! Thank you for always inspiring so many worldwide!” and “Loving it! Both will go down as the G.O.A.T.”
View this post on InstagramThe White House’s official Instagram account also posted a photo of the pair, and the comments were again divided. On a high note, some fans wrote, “This crossover is the best thing to happen to me” and “Queen and President.” But others had a different take on the visit: “No one even 15 years ago would believe this was real” and “Such an awkward photo.”
The backlash continued on Reddit, where it seems like everyone panned his “so hot” comment, “She really thinks this charade will work. Oh, girl gonna learn the hard way”, “Every day there’s a new headline that somehow feels even weirder than the last,” and “Gross.”
1981 Anthem That Almost Never Became a Single Was a No. 1 Hit 44 Years Ago Today
The Human League was a cutting-edge band in the ’80s, building its identity around futuristic electronic sounds and embracing synthesizers and drum machines. So when it came time to release the fourth single from their third studio album,Dare!, the band had serious doubts about whether it belonged in their catalog.
“Don’t You Want Me” was catchy, polished, and undeniably mainstream—perhaps too mainstream for a band determined to push electronic music into the future. Still, it’s a good thing they quelled those nagging thoughts, because “Don’t You Want Me” became the biggest hit of their career.
According to the Official Charts, Oakey thought so little of the song that he didn’t want to release it as a single because “he thought the fans would’ve thought they’d sold out.” To ensure fans loved the track, he insisted the single come with a free poster. Because, '80s.
Released in November 1981 in the U.K., the single crossed the pond in January. By March 1982, it had debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, then climbed to the top spot. Beginning July 3, 1982, “Don’t You Want Me” spent three weeks at No. 1.
It was an even bigger hit in its native country. Hitting the top spot on the Official Singles Chart in December 1981, it became the biggest-selling U.K. single of the year and ranks as the23rd-most successful single in U.K. chart history with more than 1.56 million copies sold.
Co-written by lead singer Philip Oakey, keyboardist and guitarist Jo Callis, and visual/conceptual member Philip Adrian Wright, the synth-pop track relies heavily on the aforementioned electronic production techniques. Lyrically, it's a sort of elevated duet that blends a he-said/she-said power struggle with soaring vocals from Oakey and vocalist Susan Ann Sulley.
Speaking of Sulley, the song transformed the amateur singer from a teenage backing vocalist into one of synth-pop’s defining voices. Before “Don’t You Want Me,” she had never taken the lead on a major Human League track.
“The key to that song is that we didn't spoil it,” Oakey told NME in 2012, via Songfacts. “With most songs, you think of a couple of nice tunes and some words, and then you start working, and you work until they're not very good. We happened to stop before, stop while it was still all right. So in a strange way, it sounds complicated, but it's a pretty simple sort of song.”
Though Oakey has since grown to appreciate the track and its impact on the band, he still doesn’t think much of it. In 2014, he told Classic Pop magazine, per Songfacts, “‘Don’t You Want Me’ might have shifted gazillions, but either I’ve heard it too many times or the rest of Dare! is just so far ahead that it puts it in the shade. Still, it made the band.”
Today, The Human League is still together.
Andy Willsher / Getty Images
Philip Oakey, joined by longtime vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley, recently wrapped a major North American Generations Tour with special guests Soft Cell and AlisonMoyet. They’re now getting ready for a 2027 Generations Tourhopping around Australia and New Zealand.
No doubt they're performing “Don’t You Want Me,” and every screaming fan is responding with a resounding YES.

Target’s ‘Very Coastal’ Arch Floor Lamp Is Just $50, and It Has the Dreamiest Beach House Look
Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
If you can’t make it to the beach every day but still want your home to feel a little more coastal for summer, the Costway Arc Floor Lamp is a great Target find to consider while it’s on sale. It’s usually $87, but right now it’s down to just $50, making it 43% off. The lamp comes in black and has a woven paper rope shade that adds a breezy, natural texture, making any room feel warmer and more relaxed.
The lamp measures 63 inches tall, has a 10-inch base, and a 12.5-inch-wide shade. It’s made with a metal pole and a paper rope shade, and it weighs a little over 10 pounds. The floor lamp has a standard socket that works with several bulb types up to 60 watts, though you’ll need to buy the bulb separately. It also has a 6.2-foot power cord and a foot pedal switch, so you don’t have to reach behind furniture every time you want to turn it on.
Costway Arc Floor Lamp, $50 (was $87) at Target Shop at TargetA basic floor lamp can brighten a room, but it doesn’t always do much for the space beyond that. This one feels more decorative thanks to its stylish woven shade, which has a rattan-like look while still staying budget-friendly. The black metal frame keeps it from being too beachy, so you get that airy, coastal-inspired feel without making your living room fully look like a beach house. And although it feels especially fitting for summer, its neutral design makes it easy to leave out year-round.
One reviewer called it “very coastal, but not grandma‘s beach condo,” which is perfect if you like its breezy look but don’t want the lamp to feel kitschy or dated. They also added that it offers a “nice bright light, but not overly bright.” Another shopper said it “makes the room look more comfortable with a modern look.”

This lamp would look right at home with a cream-colored sofa or chair, a light-wood coffee table, a cane cabinet, or a woven rug. It could also soften a room with darker furniture, since the shade adds some warmth, while the black pole pairs well with darker accents. And since the base is only 10 inches wide, you don’t have to worry about it taking up too much floor space.

1987 Soft Rock Classic, Just Reimagined 39 Years Later, Was Iconic Band's Last Top 10 Hit
While Fleetwood Mac is probably best known for their hit songs from the '70s (particularly anything off the Rumours album), almost half of the band's Top 10 hits were actually released in the '80s. Among those chart-toppers were "Big Love," "Hold Me," and the last Top 10 track of Fleetwood Mac's career: "Little Lies," which peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987.
Released as the third single from Fleetwood Mac's fourteenth studio album, Tango in the Night, "Little Lies" was written by Christine McVie and her then-husband, Eddy Quintela...or was it? As McVie told MOJO in 2017, Quintela apparently wasn't all that involved in the process.
"Let’s just say that...I wrote most of the songs," McVie said with a laugh. "'Little Lies' was very much my song, and it’s not about me, and it’s not about Eddy. It’s just a song I wrote, lying out by my pool with a pad and paper and that’s what I came up with. Counter-vocals written across Lindsey’s tune and…I just kind of made it up."
As the title implies, the song is about troubled romance:
If I could turn the page
In time then I'd rearrange just a day or two
Close my, close my, close my eyes
But I couldn't find a way
So I'll settle for one day to believe in you
Tell me, tell me, tell me lies
Tell me lies
“The idea of the lyric is: If I had the chance, I’d do it differently next time. But since I can’t, just carry on lying to me and I’ll believe, even though I know you’re lying," McVie told Billboard‘s Timothy White.
All these years later, McVie's words are still resonating with listeners, especially those dealing with relationship drama. In fact, a recent cover of the song by SVRCINA x Cat Vs. Cat was just featured on Season 8, Episode 26 of Love Island USA (speaking of relationship drama).
As Love Island USA executive producer James Barker explained to Rolling Stone, the team behind the show has to be musically prepared for anything.
"We work to get hundreds or sometimes thousands of songs ready to go, because we don’t know where the story’s going. 'OK, this track is going to be great for when somebody eventually breaks up with somebody, or this track is going to be the perfect first-kiss song when that comes up,'" he said. "It's all based on the feeling and the lyrical content and just making sure that in our minds, whatever story could come of Love Island, that we have something locked and ready to go for that."
It wouldn't be all that surprising if a second (or third, or fourth) Fleetwood Mac tune showed on Love Island. (Just imagine "Go Your Own Way" playing when somebody gets sent home.)

"Hard launch 🚀" Tomlinson captioned a sweet video with his new girlfriend, Sarah Siebert, on Monday, July 6.
In the clip, Connor was sipping a beer poolside before Sarah popped into frame to give him a peck on the cheek.
"Sarah and I are just boyfriend & girlfriend and for now that’s good enough for us ❤️🔥" Connor added in the comments.
Fans were quick to point out one physical characteristic of Connor's new lady that shocked Netflix viewers.
View this post on Instagram"BUT SHES BLONDE????" one fan questioned.
"AND SHE’S BLONDE!!!!! 🤭" another teased.
"Naturally blonde or not Connor looks happy and that's all that matters ❤️" yet another follower wrote.
Fans of the Netflix dating show will remember the fan-favorite made it clear that he prefers brunettes.
"I didn't think you were so hung up on hair color," Connor's mom, Lise, said after trying to set him up with a friend's daughter.
"And you didn't think to tell me?!" Connor hilariously retorted. "I am very upset with you."
Following the mishap with his mother, Connor was set up on a blind date by producers during season 3. That blind date with a girl named Georgie Harris turned into Connor's first love.
He was immediately smitten, referring to Georgie as his "demigoddess." Unfortunately, and to the shock of viewers, the pair called it quits after a trip to London.
Country Star Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 24 Years After No. 1 Hit
More than two decades after it first topped the country charts, Toby Keith's signature patriotic anthem is climbing the music rankings once again.
"Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" has surged to No. 4 on the Apple Music chart, showing that the song continues to connect with listeners 24 years after it became a No. 1 country hit in 2002. The renewed success follows another Independence Day weekend in which Americans streamed Keith's music in large numbers.
The comeback adds another chapter to the lasting popularity of one of country music's most recognizable songs. Originally released in May 2002 as the lead single from Keith's Unleashed album, "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart during the Fourth of July weekend that same year.

Its latest rise also comes more than two years after Keith's death on Feb. 5, 2024, when fans again turned to his catalog in record numbers. Since then, several of his biggest hits and albums have continued to perform strongly on streaming platforms and music charts.
The renewed momentum for "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" follows another strong Independence Day showing across major streaming services.
According to recent streaming data, the song became the most-streamed track on Spotify in the U.S. on July 4, 2026, finishing ahead of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." and Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas."
Now, its climb to No. 4 on Apple Music further highlights the song's continued popularity during the holiday season.
The anthem has become closely linked with Independence Day celebrations since its release, making it one of the country's most recognizable patriotic songs every July.
Keith wrote the song in late 2001 after two life-changing events. The first was the death of his father, Korean War veteran Hubert "H.K." Covel, who died in a traffic accident earlier that year. The second was the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which deeply affected the country.
According to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Keith said his father lost an eye during the Korean War but never lost his love for America. That memory inspired him to write the song from his father's point of view.
The emotional connection behind the lyrics became a key reason why the record stood out when it was released.
Before officially recording it, Keith only performed the song live for military audiences. Their response convinced him that the song deserved a wider audience.
The song quickly became one of the defining country releases of 2002. After debuting on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart in May of that year, "Courtes of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" climbed to No. 1 on the chart dated July 20, 2002. It also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached No. 25, making it Keith's biggest solo pop hit at the time.
Over the years, the single has continued to find new audiences. Following Keith's death in February 2024, it returned to Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart at No. 15 as fans revisited his catalog. In 2025, the song again re-entered the charts during the Fourth of July period, reaching No. 8 on Hot Country Songs and No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 through increased streaming.
Its commercial success has also continued to grow. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified the song 5× Platinum, making it the highest-certified single of Keith's career in the United States.
The anthem's continued popularity reflects the lasting appeal of Keith's music. Throughout his career, he built one of country music's strongest catalogs, earning 42 Top 10 country hits and 33 No. 1 singles. His breakthrough came with "Should've Been a Cowboy" in 1993, while later chart-toppers such as "How Do You Like Me Now?!," "Beer for My Horses," "American Soldier" and "Made in America" helped establish him as one of the genre's biggest stars.
Even after his passing at age 62 following a battle with stomach cancer, listeners have continued to celebrate his work. Keith was also posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024, honoring a career that spanned nearly three decades and produced some of country music's most enduring songs.

John Wayne Classic Originally Meant to Co-Star Fess Parker Named a 'Perfect' Western
Nearly 70 years after its release, The Searchers continues to be regarded as one of the greatest Westerns ever made. Starring John Wayne in one of the defining roles of his career, the 1956 classic is widely considered a masterpiece that transcends the genre. A new ranking names The Searchers among a select list of perfect Westerns, another reminder that the film's legacy and impact remain as vital today as they were nearly seven decades ago.
Hailed as a perfect film thanks in part to John Wayne's complex performance and the story's moral complexity, The Searchers continues to captivate audiences and critics alike. Here's why it remains one of the greatest Westerns ever made.
"The Searchers is the Western that gives you Monument Valley at its most mythic and then makes the myth feel poisoned. Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) returns to his brother's Texas home after the Civil War, carrying bitterness, mystery, and a hatred of Comanches that goes far beyond ordinary frontier fear. When a Comanche raid destroys the family and Debbie is taken, Ethan begins a years-long search with Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), the adopted nephew who keeps trying to pull him back from the darkest version of himself.
The film is enormous because the search changes meaning the longer it continues. At first, Ethan seems driven by rescue. Slowly, horribly, the possibility grows that he may prefer Debbie dead to changed by life among the Comanches. John Wayne makes Ethan charismatic and frightening in the same breath, which is exactly why the movie still provokes arguments. Martin's loyalty, Laurie's (Vera Miles) waiting, Scar's (Henry Brandon) presence, the snow, the doorways, the long rides—all of it turns the Western quest into something morally unstable. It delivers the genre's beauty while forcing you to stare at the ugliness inside its legend."
Why The Searchers Is Considered a MasterpieceDirected by John Ford, The Searchers did something few Westerns of its era attempted by presenting a deeply flawed hero in John Wayne's Ethan Edwards. The character's moral complexity elevates the film from a traditional Western into a richly layered character study that challenged audiences' expectations. Combined with sweeping cinematography and emotionally resonant storytelling, the film transcends both its genre and its era, making it one of the most enduring and re-watchable Westerns of all time.
John Wayne's Defining PerformanceBy 1956, John Wayne was already Hollywood's biggest Western star, but The Searchers allowed him to portray a character unlike any he had played before. Ethan Edwards is courageous yet deeply troubled, heroic yet often unsettling, resulting in one of the most nuanced performances of Wayne's legendary career.
The film also marked another landmark collaboration between John Wayne and director John Ford. Together, the two icons helped define the Western genre and created some of Hollywood's most enduring classics.
The Casting Story That Almost Changed the Film @a_man_of_music3elease as a single in February 1955. "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" is a song with music by George Bruns and lyrics by Thomas W. ♬ original sound - Officially Better TikTok MusicFord originally hoped to cast Fess Parker as Martin Pawley following the popularity of Parker's portrayal of Davy Crockett on television. However, contractual obligations to Walt Disney kept Parker from accepting the role. In an interview with the Archive of American Television, Parker later said Disney never informed him about the offer to appear in The Searchers, calling it the biggest career disappointment of his life.
How The Searchers Continues to Influence HollywoodThe influence of The Searchers extends far beyond Westerns. The film's visual style, storytelling, and character-driven approach have inspired generations of filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino, and the Coen Brothers.
Its DNA can be found in everything from epic adventures to psychological dramas, with directors frequently citing the film's iconic imagery, emotional depth, and unforgettable closing shot as inspiration for their own work. The movie helped demonstrate that genre films could be both commercially successful and artistically ambitious.
More importantly, The Searchers continues to spark conversation with each new generation of viewers. Its thoughtful exploration of race, history, revenge, and the mythology of the American West has kept the film culturally relevant while cementing its reputation as one of the greatest and most influential Westerns ever made.

1976 Rock Classic, Named No. 1 Hit Song, Became a Soft Rock Anthem
One heartfelt ballad changed the trajectory of Chicago's career.
Released in 1976, "If You Leave Me Now" became the band's first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, introducing a softer side of the rock group that audiences immediately embraced. Nearly 50 years later, the song remains one of Chicago's signature recordings and one of the defining soft rock anthems of the 1970s.
The song showcased a different side of the band.
Written and sung by bassist Peter Cetera, "If You Leave Me Now" departed from the horn-driven rock sound that had defined Chicago's early success. Instead, the ballad relied on delicate acoustic guitar, lush strings and Cetera's soaring tenor to tell the story of a man pleading for one last chance to save a relationship.
"Musically, the jazz and blues that the rest of the guys loved was never my cup of tea," Cetera told Louder. "In a way I never really felt part of the group anyhow."
And yet, "If You Leave Me Now" was infused with an emotional honesty that resonated with listeners around the world.
The single climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 while also topping the Adult Contemporary chart. It became Chicago's first chart-topper in the United States and reached No. 1 in several other countries, helping transform the band into an even bigger international success.
But, not every member of the band was as excited about the hit song as listeners.
"[A change in direction] occurred, I guess, with 'If You Leave Me Now’'around '76," singer Robert Lamm said in an interview. "By the time the '80s hit, the ballads were the only way we could get on the radio. I felt terrible about it, as a guy who doesn’t care for ballads and has written very few of them. That's always been the more boring side of Chicago, but ironically the most successful side." I think it was a confluence of what was going on in radio and where did Chicago fit in. We’ve been really good at finding a place to fit in.”"
The recording also earned widespread industry recognition. "If You Leave Me Now" won two Grammy Awards, including Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus, further cementing its place as one of the year's biggest songs.
Although some longtime fans initially viewed the softer direction as a departure from Chicago's jazz-rock roots, the song ultimately broadened the band's audience and paved the way for many of its biggest ballad hits in the years that followed. It also established Cetera as one of rock's most recognizable vocalists, a role he would continue to build throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
Over the decades, "If You Leave Me Now" has remained a fixture on soft rock and adult contemporary radio. Its timeless melody, elegant arrangement and universally relatable lyrics have helped it endure across generations, while its unmistakable opening instantly transports listeners back to one of the most successful periods in Chicago's storied career.
Nearly 50 years after reaching No. 1, "If You Leave Me Now" continues to stand as one of soft rock's defining classics. What began as Chicago's first chart-topping single ultimately became one of the most beloved ballads ever recorded, proving that heartfelt songwriting never goes out of style.

Keith Richards Says America Is ‘A Bit of a Disappointment’—And the New Rolling Stones Song Proves It
Music icons Keith Richards and Mick Jaggeropened up about the meaning of The Rolling Stones’ new track ‘Ringing Hollow’ on the band's soon-to-be-released 25th album, Foreign Tongues. While there’s been some speculation that the lyrics make an anti-Trump statement, the legendary musicians are setting the record straight.
In a recent interview with The Times, Richards said the song is “a nostalgic love affair with America, and (it being) a bit of a disappointment at the moment.” He added, “All you hear is the moaning about the price of gas. This is where it hurts people.”
What exactly does Richards mean by a nostalgic love affair? He told MOJO, “I take ‘Ringing Hollow’ to be about America when we were growing up in the ‘50s.” Richards continues, “The romance of it all: have a cocktail, smoke your cigarettes, play your jukeboxes. We were 14, 15 years old, dying for more black music in America, and slowly you go through the rock’n’rollers and realize that these cats all learned from Muddy Waters.”
The guitarist adds, “Even now, if I’m stuck for an idea, I’ll go back to the blues because the musical form is limited and that makes it all the more intriguing. You’re telling me you can get more out of this thing? ‘Ringing Hollow’ is our way of saying: we love you.”
Fellow Rolling Stone Mick Jagger also talked to MOJO about the politics behind the new album, revealing, “It's about America as an idea. The American Dream is intact for some people, and I’m sure we can find some wonderful immigrant stories that happened within the last 12 months, but we read about the decline of the American Empire.”
Jagger went on to say, “Is the Iran war America’s Suez moment? Well, it’s not the same at all, but there are a lot of questions about imperial overreach and the lobbying system. The money spent on an election is absurd. It’s not corruption per se but unnecessary. Is it indicative of this administration, or is it something that has been happening a long time? In any case, it’s not the same place as it was.”
Rolling Stone (the magazine, not the band) called ‘Ringing Hollow’ Richards and Jagger’s “kiss-off letter to the U.S. And it looks like fans agree. On a recent Reddit thread about Richards’ “disappointment” with America, one commenter posted, “When Keith says ‘you’ve got a problem,’ you’ve got a problem,” and another added, “It takes a slot to disappoint Keith.”
While Richards is originally from the UK (he was born in Dartford, Kent, England), he’s lived in Connecticut since 1985. Jagger currently splits his time between the UK and New York City.
’70s Heavy Metal Legends Debut at No. 1 With New Release
More than 50 years ago, Judas Priest helped lay the foundation for heavy metal, evolving from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal pioneers to the modern outfit that still tours and performs today.
Decades after their formation, the British legends continue to set new milestones, like the one last week, when they added yet another No. 1 to their arsenal.
View this post on InstagramThe Best Of, a career-spanning compilation album featuring 16 tracks on CD and 10 on vinyl, arrived on June 19 and shot straight to the top of the United Kingdom’s Official Rock & Metal Albums chart for the week of June 25 to July 1.
Anthems including “Breaking the Law,” “Painkiller,” “Living After Midnight,” and other hits from Judas Priest’s first two albums, Rocka Rolla (1974) and Sad Wings of Destiny (1976), helped score another winning album for the group, marking their sixthNo. 1 on the survey.
Judas Priest's last chart-topper came courtesy of Invincible Shield in spring 2024.
“Sad Wings of Destiny is my personal favorite,” lead vocalist Rob Halford told radio personality Eddie Trunk in 2020. “I really love that album. … It’s an important album for us as a band and for heavy metal music in general. It’s just a very solid representation of a lot of the best of Priest: the riffs, the tempo, the songwriting and vocals. It still stands the test of time.”
According to Forbes, The Best Of also debuted on half a dozen other rankings across the Atlantic.
A time capsule showcasing the thrilling and aggressive mix of twin guitars, rapid rhythms, and soaring vocals, The Best Of is the epitome of hard rock—its nostalgic aura allowing fans to practically smell the band’s classic leather-and-studs aesthetic.
Formed in Birmingham, England, by Al Atkins, the NWOBHM trailblazers influenced speed, thrash, and power metal, kicking off their reign with progressive roots in the '70s, stadium-ready hooks in the '80s, the "Ripper" Owens era in the '90s, and continued evolution ever since.
Today, Judas Priest continues to sell out venues--right now, they're currently on their EuropeanFaithkeepers 2026 Tour--and keeps fans updated on social media.
In an era dominated by streaming-first pop releases, the band’s latest win highlights the staying power of classic heavy metal, and especially the church of Judas Priest.
