1997 Epic Love Story Listed Among 'Greatest Movies of All Time' Won 11 Oscars

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 11:09am

Just shy of 30 years ago, James Cameron's Titanic was released in theaters, and we as movie goers would never be the same. Beloved for the romance between main characters Jack and Rose while also regarded for its leading innovation in the world of filmmaking, Titanic is listed as the second greatest movie of all time according to Rolling Stone, outranked only by The Shawshank Redemption. Forest Gump, Gone with the Wind, and Jaws were also high up on the publication's list of best films.

Cameron's Titanic bounces between the launch and voyage of the RMS Titanic in 1912 and (at the time) more modern 1996, when a fictional research crew is searching the wreckage of the ship for a necklace known as The Heart of the Ocean 84 years after the fact. In 1912, scrappy but poor artist Jack Dawson and rich debutante Rose DeWitt Bukater fall fast and deeply in love with each other while aboard the vessel. In 1996, a now 101-year-old Rose recounts her time with Jack, her story, and what happened on that tragic, fateful, five-day journey on the RMS Titanic.

Considered groundbreaking in the area of filmmaking, Cameron had long had a fascination with shipwrecks and considered the Titanic the "Everest" of all shipwrecks. He pitched the film as "Romeo and Juliet" but aboard the ship. The movie he would ultimately end up going on to make would take over 160 days to film, and cost $200 million dollars (or $1 million dollars per minute of run time) to produce.

Titanic was not only an absolute commercial hit making over $2 billion at the box office but was also met with overwhelming critical acclaim. The film's soundtrack was also the best-selling-album in the US in 1998. The film would go on to receive Golden Globes, Grammys, and a whopping 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. With 14 nominations, Titanic would be one of two films to hold the record for most nominations at the Oscars, a record that would only be surpassed this year by Sinners.

People still absolutely adore Titanic both for the nostalgia of the 1997 epic, but also for the ways it continues to move people today. Both endearingly, hilariously, and every which way in between.

Mark Ballas Reveals the Advice He Gave His Mom Before Her TV Judging Debut (Exclusive)

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 11:00am

In the world of dance, they say whatever troupe you're a part of becomes your family. For Mark Ballas, that's literal.

Of course, we know him as one of the most talented pros to grace the stage of Dancing with the Stars. So far, he's competed in 21 seasons, having made ten finales and taken home three Mirror Ball Trophies. But it's entirely understandable, given his pedigree. Mark is the son of Shirley and Corky Ballas, two legends in the ballroom community as both performers and teachers.

đŸȘ© SIGN UP for our Dancing with the Stars newsletter to get access to exclusive news, interviews, songs, recaps & more đŸȘ©

Shirley was a rising star in the world of British Ballroom in the '80s and '90s, colloquially known as the "Queen of Latin." But she truly hit her stride when she and Corky were partnered up, quickly finding they follow the same cadence. After marrying in 1985, the two went on a tear across the ballroom scene, taking home commendations that include the 1996 Open to the World International Champions, 1995–1996 Open to the World British Champions, two-time British National Champions, and seven-time undefeated United States International Latin Champions.

As the latter title indicates, the pair decided to cross the pond for what would end up being the last portion of Shirley's dancing career. But the couple did not stray far at all from the world of foxtrots and sambas, as they soon lent their extensive expertise into becoming instructors. Over the years, they've taught such DWTS luminaries as Derek Hough, Julianne Hough, Karina Smirnoff, Tony Dovolani, Edyta Sliwinska — and, of course, their son, Mark.

Mark joined the then-fledgling ABC reality series for Season 5 in 2007, and quickly followed in his own parents' successful footsteps by winning his second season alongside Kristi Yamaguchi. But, a decade later, Shirley received her own DWTS offer — in a manner of sorts. Strictly Come Dancing, the British version of the series, was looking for a new head judge with the departure of Len Goodman. And the only person proper to sit on that throne was the Queen of Latin herself.

Related: Here’s the Rumored Cast for ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Season 35 in 2026

"I was like, 'Yeah, it's a no-brainer,'" Mark tells Parade in an exclusive interview when he heard his mother had received the offer. "She called me. She's like, 'I don't know if this is for me.' Because she loves to teach. She loves her craft. That's one thing I'll say about my mom. No one is more clued in on the fundamentals and mechanics and the craft of Latin American ballroom dancing. She is just the best. And at 65, she'll probably outdance all of us until she can't move."

"So I remember when this came up for her, she's like, 'I don't know if I want to go into it,'" he recalls. "I was like, 'Mom, you are meant for this. It's you. You're the girl.'"

Of course, Mark, who is currently bringing the house down eight shows a week in Chicago on Broadway alongside former partner Whitney Leavitt, had no professional judging experience when Shirley was in the mix for Strictly Come Dancing. But, having been on the receiving end of comments from the panel for a decade, including from Len himself, he had one simply advice for her: Be yourself.

"The cool thing about my mom [is she] comes from a small area outside of Liverpool called the Wirral. She's come from some hard knocks. She had to defy a lot of odds to get to where she is in her field. And I love that about her. I was like, 'Just be you. Just go for it. Talk about the thing you love, which is dancing.'"

Indeed, as Mark prognosticated, Shirley's spot on Strictly was a no-brainer. She got the gig in 2017, and has served as the lead member of the panel ever since. But, excitingly, American fans will get a dose of her in the recently announced spinoff Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, coming to ABC on July 13.

Related: The First-Ever ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Con Is Happening — And the Guest List Is Huge

Hosted by recent champ Robert Irwin, the competition will have twelve professional dancers competing for a spot on Season 35 this fall. But Shirley won't be alone in doing so, as she'll be judging alongside a familiar face: Mark himself! While Mark's involvement in The Next Pro had not been announced at the time he did our interview, he was able to unintentionally give a tease as to what we can expect from the feedback she'll be giving these pros all summer long.

"It's tough love," he admits. "Don't get me wrong, she's very direct. And that's because of her upbringing, the area she's from. But that's what makes it work. If you want to succeed, sometimes we need that tough love."

Surprisingly, this new series does not mark the first time that Mark is sharing the screen alongside one of his parents. In Season 7, his third year on the show, he received a call telling him that Corky would also be a pro on that season. His first reaction was, fittingly, "What?!"

And so DWTS fans were treated to an incredibly rare sight on the show, as father and son squared off to see who would get the Mirror Ball. Mark was partnered with Kim Kardashian, as the reality star was just beginning her pop culture takeover following the premiere season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Corky, on the other hand, danced alongside Oscar-winning Cloris Leachman, who was 82 at the time. And, while Corky would only do one more season after this, partnered up with Brady Bunch star Florence Henderson, Mark knew from the beginning DWTS was a natural fit.

"My dad is an entertainer," he says. "He is amazing. He's a flamenco guitar player. That's what got me into guitar and flamenco dancing. Just a performer. My dad just has the 'rizz,' as the kids say. So that was just such a cool moment to be up there with my dad."

It should be noted as well that, in the first and only Battle of the Ballas Boys, age came out victorious. Mark and Kardashian were eliminated third, while Corky and Leachman made it to seventh place. But, as competitive as the two men are, there didn't seem to be any bad blood in the process.

"I was like, 'This is the best!'" Mark reveals. "We FaceTime pretty much every day. We're buds. So that was a great moment."

We should look forward to some more great moments from Mark and another of his parents, as he and Shirley sit side-by-side to help cast the next dancer to join the hit reality show's ranks on Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, which premieres July 13 on ABC.

'DWTS' Icon Derek Hough Shares 'Incredible Moment' With Baby Girl Everley

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:59am

Dancing with the Starsstaple Derek Hough just shared the cutest update on his newborn baby girl.

"My baby Everley, she's a great sleeper," he said in a recent ABC interview. "She smiles, she's already laughed."

"It was the most incredible moment, I blew her belly and she just started giggling and I was like, 'What!'" he shared. "For like five minutes straight she was just laughing, that guttural laugh, that you're just like, 'Oh my gosh.'

"That's now my goal in life," he added. "I just want to make her laugh for the rest of my life, that's all I want to do."

Everley, whom Hough shares with wife Hayley Erbert, was born in December. The couple documented Erbert's pregnancy journey and now continue to share their lives as new parents.

As a family of three, the Hough brood will be heading out on the road for his tour “Symphony of Dance Encore,” which will feature Erbert, who stunned in promo photos taken just four weeks after she gave birth.

"To now be able to go on tour this summer, to bring her on the road with us even though she doesn't know what's going on yet," Hough said in the interview. "I cannot wait to share that."

The national tour, which kicks off in June and will have stops all over the country through August, was initially considered to be a big undertaking as the two were preparing to welcome Everley.

“I actually said, ‘Honey, I don’t know,’” Hough said in November. “I was like, ‘I don’t even know if I want to go on tour. I don’t know what I’m gonna feel, what I’m gonna experience. I don’t know how my life is gonna be. How personally my worldview is gonna change — and our life together as a family.’”

However Hough said he consulted his fellow dancers, including Val Chmerkovskiyand Jenna Johnson, who brought their 3-year-old, Rome, on the road for the Dancing With The Stars Tour this year, and was ultimately encouraged to bring his newborn along.

Laura Dern Joins ‘The White Lotus’ After Helena Bonham Carter’s Departure

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:50am

Laura Dern is checking into The White Lotus for season 4 after the departure of Helena Bonham Carter from the series.

Dern, 59, a longtime friend and colleague of White Lotus creator Mike White, will play a new character being developed and written for her by White, Deadline reported. The piece noted that at the time of Carter's exit from the series last week, when filming had already gotten underway, “it had become apparent” that the character created by White for Carter “did not align once on set.”

The announcement of Dern's casting on Instagram was received with celebratory praise from the public on social media.

Have Laura Dern and Mike White Worked Together Before?

Yes! The duo first teamed up for White's 2007 film Year of the Dog, which starred Molly Shannon. But their best-known project is the HBO series Enlightened, which ran from 2011 until 2013. The story "about a woman on the verge of a nervous breakthrough," it introduced audiences to Amy Jellicoe, a former executive attempting to put her life back together.

If you're looking for a fun watch, check out the trailer below:

Dern Is Set to Star in a Jeffrey Epstein Series

The White Lotus isn't the only exciting project on Dern's docket. In late March, it was announced that Dern will tackle the complex role of the talented journalist who dedicates her life to tracking Jeffrey Epstein's every move. Based on the book Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story by acclaimed Miami Herald journalist Julie K. Brown, the series will star Dern as Brown as she investigates his crimes.

The series is described as “an explosive account of an investigative reporter exposing the secret plea deal between Epstein and federal prosecutors. Drawing from Brown’s experience as a groundbreaking reporter for the Miami Herald, the book and the limited series follow her relentless years-long investigation that identified 80 victims, persuaded key survivors to go on the record, and led to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s arrests,” the Hollywood Reporter shared.

1994 Pop-Rock Song Hit No. 1—and Became an Iconic TV Sitcom Theme

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:47am

TV sitcom theme songs are often either preexisting hits or created specifically for a series. When Friends premiered on NBC in 1994, it went on to dominate cable TV and become one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time, with its theme song reaching No. 1 on multiple charts.

Everyone who's a fan of the sitcom knows the words to "I'll Be There For You" by the pop-rock duo the Rembrandts. Friends' opening title sequence of the main cast goofing off and having laughs in front of a water fountain and collapsing on the couch as the theme track plays has become iconic. Believe it or not, "I'll Be There For You" wasn't the original track, and the Rembrandts weren't the first choice.

Warner Bros. Television planned to use the track "Shiny Happy People" by R.E.M. as the title track, but the band had turned the opportunity down. The company still wanted a track by the band or its frontman, Michael Stipe, for other episodes, but they once again declined. With no other options, the company turned to the Rembrandts to sing the track.

According to reports, the track was composed by Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman's husband, Michael Skloff. Its main opening verse was then co-written by Friends producers David Crane and Kauffman along with songwriter Allee Willis. The Rembrandts were only chosen to record the track because they were the only available band under Warner Bros. Records.

Members Phil Sƍlem and Danny Wilde didn't want to do the track, but had no choice against the company. According to The Independent, Stipe believes "I'll Be There For You" was created to mimic the R.E.M. song.

"Then they went to another band and said, ‘Can you write an REM song?’ That’s what I’ve heard. I don’t want to diss the other band. I don’t remember who they are, but that’s a good song," he said.

The iconic hand claps at the end of "I'll Be There For You" were a last-minute addition, but helped soar the track to success. It received mixed reviews from critics, some calling it one of the worst songs with a quirky sound. The Rembrandts' track never topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts, peaking at No. 17. Instead, it topped the Adult Contemporary charts, the Hot 100 Airplay, and the Top 40/Mainstream.

"I'll Be There For You" gained notoriety when a radio station looped the original short TV version. Sƍlem and Wilde soon re-recorded the track into a full song with a second verse and a bridge, with Sƍlem claiming they were told to by the company and "there was no way to get out of it." It was later released in 1995 as part of their L.P. album.

Harry Styles and Zoë Kravitz Spark Baby Buzz After Engagement News

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:42am

It’s the question on everyone’s mind—will Harry Styles and ZoĂ« Kravitzhave a baby? News recently broke of the couple’s engagement after nearly eight months of dating. While the pair haven’t officially announced their upcoming nuptials, Kravitz was seen wearing a massive diamond ring on her left hand while kissing the singer in photographs first published by The Sun. Page Sixlater reported that a source confirmed the rumored engagement.

Now that it looks like the actress and the former boy band singer are headed to the altar, fans are wondering if a little Kravitz-Styles will soon be on the way.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE -- Episode 1899 -- Pictured: Host Harry Styles during Promos on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 -- (Photo by: Rosalind O'Connor/NBC via Getty Images)

According to Page Six, a source revealed last January, “He really wants a baby.” While it looks like Styles may have baby fever, neither he nor Kravitz has confirmed any of the rumors. But in a recent interview with The Times of London, the One Direction alum opened up about taking a bit of a break from the spotlight and the importance of family, sharing, “Also, in that time my sister [Gemma] had a baby—and at any other time in my life I would have missed a lot of that. To be there to get to know my niece as she’s growing up, it’s so obvious to me what’s real. It was really obvious that was where I wanted to be.”

What about Kravitz, though? Fans are wondering if the actress shares the same views as her reported fiancé. In 2024, Kravitz was engaged to Channing Tatum, a single dad. Dating Tatum, who shares daughter Everly with ex-wife Jenna Dewan, meant that she would become a stepmom when the pair married. Of course, the couple split before they could tie the knot, making her stepmom status a no-go.

Before calling off their engagement, Kravitz spoke to Esquire about the idea of having children, saying, “For a long time, I felt like there was something wrong with me. I was waiting for this light to go off in my head, and it never did.” She continued, “When you’re younger, you’re like, ‘Well I can’t have kids. I’m too young! It’d be crazy.’ I had to actually look at what do I want?”

And what does Kravitz want? At the time of the interview, in 2024, she wasn’t sure if she wanted children. Of course, now that she’s with Styles, things could change. That means fans of the couple will just have to wait and see! After all, if anyone knows what it’s like to be the child of celebrity parents, it’s the daughter of legendary musicianLenny Kravitz and The Cosby Show actressLisa Bonet.

Is It True That TSA Officers Are Facing No Pay
Again? Here’s What We Know and How It May Impact You

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:39am

There is a quiet rhythm to every airport morning. Coffee cups clink, rolling suitcases hum across tile floors, and the line at airport security slowly snakes forward. Most travelers rarely think about the people scanning bags and checking boarding passes. Yet in recent months, the Transportation Security Administration has found itself at the center of a growing crisis that could reshape the airport experience.

Because of a funding dispute affecting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, thousands of TSA officers may soon be working without pay again. Officials warn the agency could run out of funds to pay roughly 50,000 airport security workers as early as May if lawmakers fail to resolve the budget stalemate.

Subscribe to our newsletter and get the latest travel updates delivered straight to your inbox.

Why TSA Officers Could Be Working Without Pay Again

The current situation stems from a prolonged funding standoff in Washington over the Department of Homeland Security budget. Without approved funding legislation, agencies under DHS, including TSA, cannot fully operate their payroll systems.

During government shutdowns, most federal workers are furloughed. TSA officers are different. Because airport security is considered critical infrastructure, they are legally required to continue working even when the government cannot pay them.

This is not the first time it has happened. Past shutdowns forced TSA workers to go weeks without pay before eventually receiving retroactive compensation once funding returned. Still, that delayed paycheck can cause real hardship for workers earning modest salaries. Travel groups warn that repeated pay interruptions are placing enormous strain on the workforce responsible for screening nearly 1 billion passengers per year in the United States.

Related: TSA Considering Major Changes Amid the Busy Summer Season

What Travelers Might Notice at the Airport

Even small staffing shortages can disrupt airport flow. At smaller airports with limited checkpoints, a few unexpected absences among TSA officers can quickly cause wait times to spike.

The problem can snowball during busy travel seasons. When workers face weeks without pay, some resign or take other jobs. In fact, more than 1,000 TSA officers have reportedly left their positions since the shutdown began earlier this year, raising concerns about staffing levels.

The ripple effect is easy to imagine if you have ever sprinted through an airport to make a flight. Fewer officers means fewer screening lanes. Fewer lanes mean longer lines. And longer lines mean more travelers anxiously checking their watches.

Related: I Absolutely Refuse to Use TSA Facial Recognition at the Airport— Here's Why

Could Summer Travel Be Affected?

The timing of this funding crisis could not be worse for travelers. Summer is the busiest season for U.S. aviation, with millions of passengers passing through airports every week. If the shutdown continues and TSA payroll funds run dry, experts warn that delays could worsen just as vacation season ramps up.

The industry is already worried about the long-term effects. Previous shutdowns triggered spikes in TSA resignations and increased absenteeism, which can take months to recover from. For travelers, the advice remains simple but important. Arrive earlier than usual, monitor airport wait times, and allow extra time to get through security.

Be the first to know about new travel trends, tips, and tales—subscribe now.

What Travelers Should Keep in Mind

The real risk is gradual disruption rather than sudden chaos. Longer lines, reduced staffing, and a slower checkpoint experience may become more common if the funding dispute drags on.

For frequent travelers like me, it is a reminder that air travel depends on far more than planes and runways. It depends on thousands of people working behind the scenes to keep passengers moving safely.

Next time you place your laptop in the plastic bin and step through the scanner, it might be worth remembering that the person guiding you through the process could be doing the job without knowing when their next paycheck will arrive.

With 2 percent back on eligible purchases, retirees could conceivably get back $3,450 when using this card to cover those costs, which can then be used for other expenses or even to lower their credit card balance.

How to Apply for the Barclays Card

To apply for this card, you'll need to meet the minimum requirements, including a 620 credit score. Additionally, you'll need to be prepared to make monthly payments if you carry a balance. Interest rates are between 20.24 percent and 29.99 percent, so the monthly payment could creep up depending on how big a balance you're rolling over each month.

If all of that sounds good to you, your next step will be to head over to the Barclays website to submit your application. But it's important to note that the application will result in a hard credit inquiry on your credit report. That could be something you will want to avoid if you're planning on applying for a mortgage anytime soon, since new credit pulls can impact your credit score and factor into your debt-to-income ratio, which are just two of the ways that lenders judge your creditworthiness.

Robin Williams’ Kids, Zelda and Zak, Hit the Red Carpet To Carry on Dad’s Legacy at Mental Health Event

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:32am

Two of legendary actor Robin Williams' children, Zelda and Zak Williams, hit the red carpet this week, and they're keeping their father's memory alive.

Robin, who died by suicide in 2014, worked his way into our hearts in iconic films ranging from Good Morning, Vietnam and Dead Poets Society to Mrs. Doubtfire and Good Will Hunting. The father of three, who spoke candidly about how much he loved raising children, suffered from diffuse Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), a severe progressive neurodegenerative disease, before his death. Now, the actor's children are carrying on his massive legacy and shining brightly on the red carpet.

This week, Zelda Williams and Zak Williams hit the red carpet to attend the nonprofit Bring Change to Mind's "Revels and Revelations Celebration" at the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture in San Francisco, California. The organization describes its mission as "empowering young people to build connected, empathetic, and supportive school communities where conversations about mental health are welcome and stigma-free."

Williams' Son Spoke Candidly On His Birthday

Last year, Zak Williams took to Instagram to honor his father on what would have been his 74th birthday. In a touching post about the lasting nature of grief and his father's tremendous effects on those around him, Zak spoke candidly about his dad's legacy.

"Today would have been my dad’s 74th birthday. Every year, this season arrives with gravity. In just sixty days, we pass through Father’s Day, his birthday, and the anniversary of his death. It’s a tender and complicated stretch of time. One that asks a lot of the heart. For me, grief isn’t linear. It loops and echoes. It softens, then crescendos. But alongside it lives a legacy, the kind built not from fame or recognition, but from generosity and relentless kindness. My father lived to make people feel seen. He gave permission to feel deeply and to laugh through the pain. In his absence, that mission continues. So today, I hold close the idea that the best way to honor those we love is to live the values they stood for. To lead with service and compassion. To lift others when they’re down. And to find paths of light, even in the dark corners. To anyone carrying loss right now: you’re not alone. You are part of a passage of love and connection that never really ends. Happy birthday, Dad. Love you forever," Williams captioned the photo, which showed his father in a still from Good Morning, Vietnam.

Major Airline Implements Restrictions on Popular Travel Gadgets and Batteries— Here's How to Pack 'Around' It

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:27am

If you rely on portable chargers, spare batteries, and travel gadgets to get through a long flight, a new airline policy may change how you pack this summer. American Airlines has introduced stricter rules on lithium-powered devices, particularly power banks, joining a growing list of carriers tightening safety measures ahead of peak travel season.

What the New Restrictions Actually Say

Under the updated policy, passengers are now limited to two portable chargers per person, and each device must not exceed 100 watt-hours. But the changes go beyond simple limits:

  • Power banks must be kept visible and within reach during the flight
  • They cannot be stored in overhead bins
  • Passengers are no longer allowed to recharge them mid-flight using seat outlets or USB ports

In other words, you can still bring your devices, but how you store and use them is now tightly controlled.

This marks a noticeable shift from previous policies, where travelers could carry more spare batteries and had fewer restrictions on in-flight use.

Why Airlines Are Cracking Down

These new rules are rooted in a growing safety concern: lithium-ion battery fires.

Portable chargers, smartphones, laptops, and other everyday devices all rely on lithium batteries, which can overheat and, in rare cases, ignite. This phenomenon, known as “thermal runaway”, can happen quickly and without much warning.

And incidents are becoming more frequent:

Even when rare, these incidents are taken seriously because fires are harder to control in confined spaces like airplane cabins, especially if devices are stored out of sight. That’s exactly why airlines now require chargers to remain visible: so crew can respond immediately if something goes wrong.

Related: A Major Airline May Have Sold Your Personal Data To Set Airfares

Part of a Larger Industry Shift

American Airlines isn’t alone. Airlines around the world are rolling out similar restrictions. Some carriers now limit passengers to just one power bank, while others ban in-flight charging entirely.

In fact, aviation authorities and airlines are increasingly aligning around a few core rules:

  • Lithium batteries must be kept in carry-on bags (never checked luggage)
  • Devices should be easily accessible, not buried in overhead storage
  • Charging restrictions are expanding to reduce overheating risks

What used to be a convenience item is now treated as a regulated safety risk.

How to Pack Around the New Rules

The good news: you don’t have to ditch your travel tech, you just need to be smarter about it.

  • Choose the right power bank: Stick to chargers under 100Wh, which are widely allowed without special approval. If you’re unsure, check the label or product specs before flying.
  • Bring fewer, better devices: Instead of packing multiple cheap chargers, opt for one or two reliable, high-quality options. Lower-quality batteries are more prone to overheating issues.
  • Keep everything accessible: Pack your power bank in your personal item (like a backpack or purse), not in a carry-on that goes overhead. You may even want to keep it in a seatback pocket during the flight.
  • Avoid charging mid-air: Even if your airline hasn’t fully banned it, many are moving in that direction. Charge devices before boarding or during layovers instead.
  • Protect your batteries: Use cases or covers to prevent short-circuiting, and avoid tossing loose batteries into bags where they can come into contact with metal objects.

The new restrictions from American Airlines reflect a broader shift in aviation: convenience is taking a back seat to safety. As lithium battery incidents continue to rise, airlines are prioritizing visibility, control, and prevention.

For travelers, the adjustment is relatively minor, but important. With a little planning, you can still stay powered up without running afoul of new rules.

These 5 '70s Haircuts Will Quietly Become Summer’s Most Sought-After Styles

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:27am

Trends don’t just come back—they re-introduce themselves with a whole new attitude. And right now, all signs point to the return of '70s hair. Not in a costume-y, retro-for-retro’s-sake way, but in a softer, more wearable evolution that feels perfectly aligned with how we want our hair to look now: full, touchable and just a little undone.

The 1970s were all about movement and personality, like airy layers and face-framingvolume and fringes. From Farrah Fawcett’s iconic feathered layers to Jane Birkin’s soft, lived-in bangs, the era delivered hairstyles that felt expressive, and that same energy is exactly what’s resonating now. Today’s version keeps the spirit—volume, shape, movement—but tones down the excess, making it easier to wear day-to-day.

And it’s no surprise the look is everywhere again. A new wave of celebrities, from Sabrina Carpenter to Jenna Ortega, are leaning into that texture and breezy volume, proving that these cuts don’t just photograph well—they actually live well. As we head into summer, when low-effort styling is key and air-dried texture reigns supreme, the appeal only grows stronger.

If your current cut is starting to feel a little flat, consider this your sign. The new wave of '70s-inspired hair is all about shape, softness and just the right amount of edge to feel current. Read on for the standout styles set to quietly take over this summer, according to celebrity stylists.

What Defines a '70s Haircut?

Unlike other modern styles, '70s hair was never about perfection. As celebrity hair stylistNicolas Flores, who has styled the likes of Kendall Jenner and Sofia Richie Grainge, explains, it was all about "movement and softness—nothing was overworked."

He explains that "the shape came from the cut, not heavy styling," which means layers did the heavy lifting, creating shape naturally rather than relying on hot tools or an abundance of hairspray. The result was hair that felt lived-in from day one, with pieces that framed the face and fell exactly where they should. No forcing, no stiffness.

Even when styled, it never looked overly done. "It still felt touchable and natural, like you didn’t spend hours on it," says stylist at NYC THE TEAM, Paulina Raciborski, which is exactly why the look resonates now. It’s polished enough to feel intentional, but relaxed enough to feel real.

The Most Popular 1970s Haircuts Making a Comeback

The return of '70s hair isn’t about one single cut dominating the conversation, it’s about a shift in energy, says celebrity hair stylistTerraRose Puncerelli, who has worked with Dua Lipa and Kim Kardashian.

Stylists are seeing clients move away from super blunt, one-length styles and lean into something softer and more dimensional. As Raciborski puts it, "there’s a big shift back to softer, layered hair," with "curtain bangs, longer layers and that slightly shaggy texture" leading the charge. It’s not quite a full-on shag revival, but you still get that same airy movement and volume that made the era so iconic—just toned down enough to feel wearable now.

The difference this time around? The modern version is less extreme, but you still get the bounce, texture and personality. It’s lighter, looser and exactly what summer hair calls for.

How To Modernize a ’70s Haircut

The secret to making '70s hair feel current isn’t adding more—it’s actually pulling back. As Flores explains, "the key is restraint," which means keeping "the ends full, softening the layers and avoiding anything too exaggerated."

Instead of those super separated, overly feathered pieces, today’s version is all about blend and balance. Larisa Love, Joico Global Brand Ambassador and Artistic Director, echoes that approach, noting you want to "soften the layering so it blends versus separates," and "avoid over feathering, keeping the ends more natural." The result feels less costume-y and more elevated—like great hair that just happens to fall perfectly.

It also comes down to customization and finish. "You want movement, but not bulk," says Puncerelli, emphasizing that layers should feel "blended instead of choppy" for that touchable, modern look.

Keeping the perimeter slightly stronger helps ground the style so it doesn’t drift too vintage, while a softer fringe keeps everything feeling fresh. And perhaps most importantly, it should actually fit your life. The goal is something that "works with minimal effort and grows out beautifully," Flores tells Parade.

Sabrina Carpenter is fully in her feathered era—and it shows why this cut never really left the zeitgeist. The layers create that signature bounce without feeling overly styled, giving you that just-blow-dried, airy movement all day long.

As Raciborski explains, this look "gives that classic, bouncy blowout feel," but more importantly, it keeps hair "light and airy, which is perfect going into summer when people don’t want anything too heavy." The modern twist? Softer layering that blends seamlessly, so it grows out like a dream and doesn’t require a daily round-brush marathon.

2. Soft Shag

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

Miley Cyrus makes a strong case for the new-wave shag—less rockstar chaos, more controlled cool. The 2026 version keeps the texture but dials down the drama, which is exactly why it’s having such a moment.

Puncerelli notes that "the shag is coming back in a much softer, more wearable way," meaning you still get that edge, just without the harsh, choppy layers. The result is movement that feels intentional but relaxed—perfect for air-drying and letting your natural texture take the lead.

3. Curtain Bangs

Getty

Curtain bangs are more than just a trend—they’re basically a lifestyle at this point, and Suki Waterhouse is the perfect example. According to Raciborski, they’re "probably the most requested [style] right now," and it’s easy to see why.

They "frame the face" in that soft, flattering way while still being incredibly low-maintenance. Even better, they "blend really well as they grow," which means fewer emergency trim appointments. It’s the kind of fringe that works with you, not against you, even in the summer heat.

4. Shaggy Bob

Todd Owyoung/NBC via Getty Images

Jenna Ortega lead the charge on the shaggy bob—a cut that feels equal parts edgy and effortless. Love describes it as bringing "edge to the ’70s revival," with a vibe that’s "a little undone, a little rebellious," yet is still "totally wearable."

The magic comes from shorter internal layers and texture through the mid-lengths, which create movement without sacrificing shape. It’s the cool-girl bob’s more relaxed cousin—less hours spent styling in front of the mirror, and way more personality.

5. Natural Volume With Texture

Getty Images

Embracing what your hair already wants to do and elevating it is key, and Yara Shahidi is the blueprint of this look. In the '70s, "hair was really about embracing your natural texture," explains Puncerelli, and that mindset is fully back.

Instead of forcing sleekness or structure, the focus is on a great cut that enhances your natural pattern, paired with lightweight products that add definition without weight. The end result is hair that moves, breathes and feels like you—and no retro vibes.

‘Shark Tank' Star Thinks a Spirit Airlines Bailout Is a 'Really Bad Idea'

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:20am

For many travelers, Spirit Airlines is synonymous with ultra-cheap flights, cramped seats, and spontaneous weekend getaways that somehow cost less than dinner. Yet the budget carrier now finds itself in serious financial trouble, sparking a political and economic debate that could reshape the landscape of affordable travel in the United States.

The controversy grew louder after investor and Shark Tank star Kevin O'Leary criticized the idea of a government rescue for the airline, calling it a “really bad idea.” He argued that struggling companies should fail rather than rely on taxpayer support, saying that market competition drives out weak businesses.

Spirit Airlines Bankruptcy and the $500 Million Bailout Debate

Spirit Airlines has faced repeated financial challenges over the past few years. The company has filed for bankruptcy twice since 2024 and continues to struggle with rising fuel costs, operational problems, and changing passenger preferences after the pandemic. To keep the airline running, discussions have emerged about a possible $500 million government bailout that could involve loans or even government ownership of a large stake in the company.

Supporters of the rescue argue that Spirit’s collapse could disrupt travel markets and threaten thousands of jobs. Critics see the proposal differently. Some lawmakers and analysts warn that government intervention might simply delay an inevitable collapse rather than fix deeper business problems.

From a traveler’s perspective, the debate feels oddly personal. Airlines are not just corporations. They are gateways to destinations, spontaneous adventures, and sometimes the only affordable way to connect smaller cities.

Kevin O’Leary’s Argument: Let the Market Decide

Kevin O’Leary’s view on the bailout is blunt and rooted in free-market philosophy. In interviews about the situation, he argued that rescuing failing companies undermines the competitive system that allows stronger businesses to emerge, according to Fortune.

His position aligns with a broader economic view that struggling companies should restructure through bankruptcy or be acquired by stronger competitors. According to this logic, government support may protect bad management decisions and distort market competition.

I understand the argument intellectually, yet part of me thinks about the traveler sitting in an airport cafĂ© refreshing their boarding pass app. Economic theory feels very different when the next affordable flight home suddenly disappears. Still, O’Leary’s point reflects a reality of the airline industry. Carriers rise and fall frequently, and competition constantly reshapes the market.

How the Collapse of Spirit Could Change Travel

If Spirit Airlines disappears entirely, experts warn the effects could ripple across the travel industry. The airline currently accounts for a significant share of domestic capacity in the United States, particularly on leisure routes, according to The Verge.

Some analysts believe fares could rise if Spirit leaves certain markets, as fewer competitors would remain to drive prices down. At the same time, other airlines may step in to fill the gap. Low-cost carriers like Frontier or Avelo could expand routes, while traditional airlines might adjust their pricing strategies. For travelers, the outcome could mean fewer rock-bottom fares but potentially a more stable airline landscape.

What Travelers Should Watch Next

The fate of Spirit Airlines remains uncertain. Negotiations with creditors, government officials, and investors continue as the company searches for a path forward, Reuters reported.

For travelers planning trips in the near future, the best strategy may be simple awareness. Airlines facing financial turmoil sometimes cancel routes, change schedules, or restructure operations. In the end, the debate around Spirit’s bailout is about more than one airline. It reflects a larger question about how travel works in a competitive economy.

2019 Award-Winning Drama Was Ranked No. 1 Miniseries This Decade—and You Can Binge It in a Day

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:15am

Collider recently ranked the “10 Best Miniseries From the Last 10 Years,” which is an excellent resource for anyone looking to binge-watch a new show in a single day. Making the list are hits like The Queen’s Gambit, The Haunting of Hill House, and Adolescence—but coming in at number one is Chernobyl.

This 2019 historical drama, which was produced by HBO, is about the 1986 nuclear plant disaster. It depicts the firefighters who responded to the scene and teams of miners who dug a tunnel under Reactor 4, as well as the cleanup efforts that followed the tragedy.

The five-part series received 19 Emmy nominations, winning three categories. The show also won several Golden Globes and BAFTAs. It is well-regarded by fans too, with a 97% audience score onRotten Tomatoesand a 95% critic score.

The show was created by Craig Mazin, who is known for his other popular HBO series, The Last of Us. In an interview with Vice, he spoke about how he originally came up with the idea to make a series about the Chernobyl disaster.

“Because I was 15 when Chernobyl happened, I’ve been vaguely thinking about it for most of my life,” he said. “But somewhere around 2015, it occurred to me that I didn’t know how it happened, which seemed like a pretty bizarre lapse in my understanding of the world and how it functions. So I just started reading. I honestly just wanted to know, from a scientific point of view, what exactly went wrong that night.”

Mazin continued, “What I discovered as I kept reading was something that was shocking, and remarkable, and kept coming at you. It was a little bit like I had discovered a war that no one had really written thoroughly about. And then, of course, I found out that people had—it’s just that it hadn’t crossed over into everyone’s consciousness. And I became obsessed.”

Related: 1962 ‘The Twilight Zone’ Episode Was Ranked as Having the Best Plot Twist in the Entire Series

Mazin explained that it took about “two and a half years of research and preparing and structuring” before he sat down to write the scripts for the series. Although it is mostly based on true events, there are a few changes he made throughout the story. “We had a basic rule of thumb: If you had to change something to be able to tell the story, narratively, then that was the only reason we could change it,” he said. “We couldn’t change things to make them scarier; we couldn’t change things to make them more dramatic, or more sensational, or more horrifying.”

Chernobyl is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Jack McBrayer Shares His Favorite Part of Filming 'Zillow Gone Wild' and It Made Us Say 'Aww!' (Exclusive)

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:14am

As the host of HGTV's Zillow Gone Wild, actor and comedian Jack McBrayer gets to travel all over the country and explore some of the coolest (and wackiest!) homes on the market. In fact, for the upcoming third season of the hit show, McBrayer got to tour a whopping 41 wild homes.

But for McBrayer, who is also known for playing Kenneth on 30 Rock, getting to go on those exciting adventures is not what it's all about — his favorite part is actually something much sweeter.

Parade recently spoke with McBrayer ahead of Season 3 of Zillow Gone Wild, which premieres on HGTV on Friday, May 1, at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. Jack McBrayer's Favorite Part of Shooting Zillow Gone Wild Is Connecting With the Homeowners

"My favorite part is just hanging out with the homeowners," McBrayer tells Parade over Zoom. On each episode of Zillow Gone Wild, McBrayer meets up with a few different property owners from across the U.S., and they take the comedian on tours of their wild homes.

"Even when the cameras aren't rolling, I'm just able to talk to them and hear their story. I like to feel that they are comfortable enough and at ease," he says. "My favorite part is just the social chit chatting when the cameras aren't even rolling, like we're sitting at lunch from whatever local establishment we're able to get our Cobb salads from."

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor adds that he and the crew like to make it clear to the homeowners that the production is "here to celebrate and explore and be curious with you, and to showcase and highlight you. This is all complimentary — not like at a hotel, like complimentary towel service, but we are complimenting you."

Jack McBrayer Reveals His Favorite House From Zillow Gone Wild Season 3

"There was one house in Yucca Valley, California that had just this incredible pool," McBrayer says, when asked about his favorite house from Season 3. "It was on this bluff with this incredible viewpoint. I'm just like, 'Oh, I could see myself here.'"

However, he definitely can't see himself in some of the wilder homes he toured this season.

"What I love is that [each] homeowner has such love and passion for their space," he says. "[But] after 41 houses, you see a lot of wild design choices, and some are for me, and some I politely smile and say, 'Thank you for your time.'"

Another favorite Season 3 moment for McBrayer was working with David Bromstad from My Lottery Dream Home. The two HGTV hosts teamed up to shoot a crossover episode, which will air as the Zillow Gone Wild season finale. In the episode, McBrayer and Bromstad will explore a home inspired by international spies in Reunion, Fla.

"That day was Webster's definition of chaos," McBrayer says with a laugh, about the day he filmed with Bromstad in Florida. "He is so funny. We just spent the whole day giggling, even when the cameras weren't rolling."

He adds: "Any opportunity to work with David Bromstad, I'm gonna say yes. He's just a hoot."

3 Worst States To Retire In If You Plan On Living On Social Security Alone

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:13am

While many people rely on multiple income sources in retirement, many Americans still rely solely on Social Security for their monthly income. In some areas, that monthly check from Uncle Sam is enough to get by when you stick to a budget and live within your means.

However, there are some states where relying on Social Security alone simply won't work because of things like a high cost of living or taxes, making these areas a no-go for retirees who are looking to make a move. I talked to some professionals to find out which states were the worst of the worst for Social Security recipients, and their responses may surprise you. Here's the states they said to avoid.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Hawaii

While Hawaii may be an absolute dream getaway for those looking to soak in the sun while enjoying all the splendor the Aloha State has to offer, Elias Friedman, CFPŸ, Founder and Senior Wealth Advisor at Kadima Wealth, says it's one of the worst places for retirees.

"Hawaii is number one as it has a 'double whammy' of high rent/mortgage costs and high food costs because most food needs to be imported," he explains.

Sain Rhodes, a real estate expert at Clever Offers, agrees. "The cost of living in Hawaii exceeds the national average by 90 percent, with a gallon of milk reaching up to $8," he says. "The median rent for one-bedroom apartments in Hawaii costs as much as $2,200 per month, making it extremely hard for a retiree on Social Security to pay for other expenses."

Related: 4 Hidden Gem Towns in Florida, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and More Where Retirees Can Live Comfortably on $2,500 a Month

California

Another dreamy destination, California makes the top of Rhodes' list thanks to the state's high cost of living, where he says median rents are around $2,500 a month, and even a modest home could run you around $6,000 in real estate taxes each year.

But Friedman does have a suggestion for those hoping to age in place here: get a roommate.

"While frowned upon years ago, many find that having a roommate helps with people on a fixed income and socialization as you grow older," he says, adding that it can also help you to make friends and meet new people.

New York

New York also gets a shoutout from our experts due to the state's high costs, with Ben Mizes, a real estate agent and president of Clever Real Estate, saying that New York is "difficult for retirees because the prices of providing services, food, and housing are also high."

Additionally, Rhodes notes that the state also taxes Social Security if you earn above a certain threshold, making it hard for even high earners to get by.

Where is the Best Place to Live on Social Security Alone

The news isn't all doom and gloom, though. Rhodes says that there are a number of states that make it easier to get by on Social Security alone, and they include:

  • Mississippi
  • West Virginia
  • Arkansas
  • Alabama
  • Oklahoma

"These states offer relatively low property taxes, no or little tax on Social Security payments, as well as monthly rentals lower than $1,000 in some towns," he says. "Apart from being one of the few states without state income tax, Tennessee is a perfect choice thanks to reasonable property taxes and four moderate seasons, which is crucial for retired individuals staying healthy."

While where you ultimately decide to spend your golden years is a deeply personal decision, it's clear that these experts have a lot to say when it comes to where your Social Security payments will go the furthest in retirement.

Archaeologists Uncover an Ancient Ship in Norway That Is Older Than the Vikings

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:10am

Travel often begins with a map, but sometimes it begins with a mound of earth. On a quiet island along Norway’s rugged coastline, archaeologists recently uncovered evidence of an ancient ship burial that predates the Vikings. The discovery is changing how historians understand the maritime culture of early Scandinavia and how travelers might imagine the origins of the seafaring legends that define this part of the world.

What makes the find remarkable is not just the ship itself, but its age. Radiocarbon dating suggests the burial occurred around AD 700, nearly a century before the Viking Age is traditionally thought to begin. For anyone who has stood on a windswept Norwegian shore and imagined Viking longships slicing through the waves, the idea that this maritime culture began earlier adds a deeper layer to the landscape.

Fuel your wanderlust with our top travel stories—join our newsletter today.

A Ship Burial Older Than the Vikings

The discovery centers on Herlaugshaugen, a massive burial mound on the island of Leka along Norway’s northern coast. Archaeologists studying the site found iron rivets, charcoal, and fragments of wood that once formed a ship roughly 65 feet long, buried inside the mound more than 1,300 years ago.

For decades, scholars believed that monumental ship burials in Norway emerged during the Viking Age, around the late eighth century. The new dating pushes that timeline back significantly. The burial now serves as a missing link between earlier ship graves found in places like England and Sweden and the famous Viking burials later discovered in Scandinavia.

Related: 120,000-Year-Old Discovery Made in Cave Hidden Under Historic Welsh Castle May Rewrite History as We Know It

Standing at such a site, it becomes easier to picture what early power might have looked like in this coastal world. Constructing a burial mound nearly 200 feet wide and more than 40 feet tall required immense labor and resources. That level of organization hints at powerful leaders, trade networks, and skilled shipbuilders long before Viking raids became legend.

The Island of Leka: A Quiet Place with Ancient Connections

Leka is the kind of place that travelers often stumble upon rather than plan for. Located along Norway’s Trþndelag coast, it feels remote in the way only Scandinavian islands can. The wind moves freely, the sea is never far away, and the land carries that quiet Nordic stillness that makes history feel unusually close.

But this island may once have been a hub of early maritime activity. Archaeologists now believe Leka served as a strategic node connecting northern Norway with southern Scandinavia and even trade routes across the North Sea. Ships traveling between Norway and Britain may have passed these waters long before the Viking Age reached its height, per Popular Mechanics.

Visiting Norway’s Maritime Past Today

For travelers fascinated by Viking lore, Norway offers far more than museums and reconstructed longships. Sites like Herlaugshaugen remind visitors that history often hides in landscapes rather than glass cases. A grassy mound on a remote island may contain centuries of untold stories beneath it.

Those exploring Norway’s coast might also visit places tied to later Viking discoveries. The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, for example, displays the remarkably preserved Oseberg and Gokstad ships, which provide a glimpse of the craftsmanship that defined Viking seafaring.

Traveling through Norway, I began to see the landscape differently once I understood its deeper history. A fjord was no longer just scenic. It felt like a passageway once traveled by early traders and chiefs centuries ago. Standing along the coast, it was easy to imagine early ships moving through these waters long before the Viking Age, reminding me that Norway’s maritime story began far earlier than most people realize.

What I love about discoveries like this is how they subtly change the way we see places we thought we understood. The Vikings often dominate the narrative of Scandinavian history, but this ship burial suggests their story was part of a longer continuum of seafaring innovation.

For a traveler standing on Norway’s coast today, the realization is humbling. The waves moving toward the shore have likely brushed the hulls of countless ships across centuries, some famous, many forgotten. Somewhere beneath a grassy mound on Leka lies one of those ships, quietly reminding us that history rarely begins where we think it does.

U.S. Issues Travel Warning for Beloved Island Destination Over Virus Outbreak

Tue, 04/28/2026 - 10:00am

For many travelers, a tropical island getaway represents the ultimate escape, with turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and a slower pace of life. But even the most idyllic destinations aren’t immune to global health concerns. Recently, U.S. officials issued a travel advisory for the stunning island nation of Seychelles, reminding travelers that paradise can come with unexpected risks.

What Prompted the Travel Warning

The advisory comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which issued a Level 2 travel notice due to an outbreak of chikungunya, which is a mosquito-borne virus spreading across parts of the region.

Chikungunya is transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause symptoms such as fever, severe joint pain, muscle aches, fatigue, and rash. While most people recover within about a week, some experience lingering joint pain that can last for months or even years.

Importantly, the advisory does not tell travelers to avoid visiting altogether. Instead, a Level 2 warning means visitors should “practice enhanced precautions,” such as using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and staying in accommodations with screens or air conditioning.

Why Seychelles Is So Popular

The timing of the advisory is notable because Seychelles is one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations. Made up of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, it’s known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and nature reserves.

Travelers flock here for its postcard-perfect landscapes, luxury resorts, and biodiversity, including UNESCO-listed sites.

In other words, this is a bucket-list location for honeymooners, adventure travelers, and beach lovers alike. That’s why even a moderate-level health advisory is enough to catch global attention.

A Growing Trend in Travel Advisories

This warning is part of a broader trend. In recent years, travel advisories tied to health risks have become more common, especially as mosquito-borne illnesses like chikungunya, dengue, and Zika continue to spread in warmer climates.

In fact, Seychelles isn’t alone. The CDC has issued similar Level 2 advisories for destinations like Bolivia and Suriname due to the same virus.

At the same time, the U.S. Department of State regularly updates travel advisories worldwide, covering everything from crime and political instability to natural disasters and healthcare limitations.

The takeaway? Travel warnings are becoming a normal part of trip planning, not necessarily a reason to cancel, but a signal to be more informed.

What This Means for Travelers

For those with trips planned to Seychelles or similar destinations, the advisory doesn’t mean you need to scrap your vacation. Instead, it shifts how you prepare.

Travelers should take proactive steps to reduce risk, especially regarding mosquito exposure. That includes packing insect repellent, choosing accommodations wisely, and being mindful during peak mosquito activity times (like dawn and dusk).

Ultimately, the experience of visiting Seychelles may not change dramatically, but the level of awareness and preparation required certainly does.

In today’s travel landscape, being informed is just as important as being inspired. And for those willing to prepare, even a “riskier” destination can still deliver the unforgettable experience travelers are seeking.
