'YMCA' Singer Dies at 74 After Brief Illness

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 5:22am

One of the members of the iconic 1970s disco group, The Village People, has died at the age of 74 after a brief illness.

The band's official Facebook page announced that Victor Willis, who regularly dressed as the group's policeman, has passed away.

The message read, "We are profoundly sad to announce the death of Victor Willis, lead singer of Village People. Victor passed on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, of a short but aggressive illness. Privacy is requested."

His wife, Karen Huff Willis, shared the following statement on Willis' Facebook page. She wrote, "It is with profound sadness that I must announce the death of my husband, Victor Willis. Victor passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, as a result of a short but aggressive illness. The family requests privacy at this time of great loss."

Willis was one of the group's original members alongside Felipe Rose, Alex Briley, Glenn Hughes, David Hodo, and Randy Jones. He wrote some of the Village People's biggest hits, including "Y.M.C.A.," "Go West," and "In the Navy."

Variety reported that Willis grew up in San Francisco, California, and trained in singing and dance. He relocated to New York City, where he joined the original cast of Broadway's The Wiz, where he met his first wife, Cosby Show star Phylicia Rashad.

While living in New York City, Willis was introduced to French disco producer Jacques Morali. Morali, along with his business partner Henri Belolo and Willis, created the Village People in 1977.

The singing group would go on to score some of the biggest hits of the disco era. Their instantly recognizable costumes became just as iconic as their music, helping cement their place as one of the most memorable acts of the 1970s.

In 2019, the Library of Congress added Y.M.C.A. to its National Recording Registry. The song remains one of fewer than 40 singles to have sold more than ten million physical copies. One year later, the 1978 song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, per Deadline.

Willis said of his most beloved hit, "For me, YMCA was about, like the last line says, 'They can start you back on your way'. A person could go stay at the Ritz Carlton or the Hilton, or these expensive hotels. But if you don't have that kind of money, you might have to go to the Y."

Celebrity River Cruises Announces New Premium City Extensions for European Sailings

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 5:10am

Planning a European river cruise usually comes with one major logistical headache: what to do with those few days before or after you actually board the ship. Most travelers end up booking a generic hotel package, dragging bags through train stations and guessing their way through a new city with a standard guidebook.

Celebrity Cruises is officially changing that with the launch of Before and After Stays. These are two- or three-night city extensions in Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam and Lausanne that are designed to act as a premium, entirely stress-free extension of the cruise experience itself.

The program introduces what Celebrity calls Discovery Collection tours. These are experiences built around each city's most rare and authentic stories, and every stay includes one of these tours per day. Instead of being led by traditional tour guides, small groups are paired with Local Storytellers—hometown experts who act like trusted friends and know the city better than any book.

Travelers get to choose from at least three themed tour options each day, allowing them to explore at their own pace based on whether their interests lean toward local food, deep-cut history, or regional art.

During a preview of the program in Amsterdam, I saw firsthand how these experiences bypass typical tourist hubs to get to the heart of local life. A local contemporary artist leads guests through the city’s underground street art scene, visiting vibrant creative districts and evolving walls. The experience wraps up with guests actually picking up a spray can to co-create a piece on the wall themselves, shifting them from passive observers into active participants.

In Prague, the options are just as immersive. If you are drawn to history and mystery, you can follow the mystical trail of alchemists and ancient scholars through Gothic spires and hidden symbols.

For history buffs who want an even deeper experience, you can descend into Prague's shadowed defenses—exploring medieval walls, secret bunkers, and Cold War shelters that witnessed centuries of survival. For those who best discover a destination through food and drink culture, you can trace the city's soul through centuries of Czech beer heritage and historic taverns.

"Every element of a Celebrity River Cruises sailing is designed to bring guests closer to Europe's culture, history and people, onboard and ashore," said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. "Our Before and After Stays are more than an extension of a Celebrity River Cruises vacation; these stays are designed to deepen connection—to the cities, to the people who bring them to life, and to each other—leaving guests with the kind of stories and feelings that only come from truly getting close to a place."

The best part for anyone who hates organizing trips is that the entire middle section of the vacation is handled. Celebrity coordinates the boutique premium or ultra-premium hotel stays, daily breakfast, luggage transfers and the ride directly to or from the ship. The program also partners with regional organizations and small businesses to support local artisans, farmers, and cultural institutions along the way.

The extensions are officially open for booking now, starting with the Prague and Budapest options for the 2027 river season, followed by Amsterdam and Lausanne for 2028. It’s a massive relief for anyone who wants to deeply explore Europe's biggest cultural hubs without the stress of playing travel agent to do it.

Child Psychologist Explains What It Really Means When Kids Collect Random Objects

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 5:05am

If you walk into a child’s room, there’s a good chance that you’ll spot one or more collections proudly displayed. Whether it’s rocks or seashells or action figures, there seems to be an intrinsic connection between being a kid and collecting random objects. As Psychology Today reports, at least 30 to 40 percent of children collect something, but that number may be even closer to 80 percent.

“Collecting can be an indicator of healthy development, and often begins around age six,” Leslie Taylor, PhD, psychologist and director of child services for the UTHealth Houston Trauma and Resilience Center, tells Parade. “This is a practice through which children can learn to categorize, develop expertise in a particular topic area, build their identity and execute organization skills.”

She adds that oftentimes, children use their collections to express aspects of their identities.

“It’s a subtle but important way of showing others who they are, what interests them and what they take pride in," she explains. "It could be rocks, seashells, acorns, paperclips or pencils. Items may be chosen for sensory reasons. Rocks or seashells, for example, come in all sort of shapes, colors, textures and patterns. These preferences and attention to detail are an expression of the child’s interests and identity.”

Additionally, she reveals that collecting can be a reflection of a child’s cognitive skills and their sense of control. Ahead, we’ll go more into these aspects and share the benefits of children creating collections.

What Does Collecting Random Objects Say About a Child’s Development?

According to Dr. Taylor, collecting is an example of something that she refers to as a schema.

“A schema is a mental pattern or theme that helps children test ideas and understand how things work,” she tells Parade. “It’s a repeated pattern children use to investigate the world around them.”

That means that when children collect, although the items may seem random, it can showcase their cognitive development.

“They’re noticing what items have in common, what makes them different and how they fit into their growing picture of the world,” she says. “Collections often also come with a wealth of stories, like when the item was found and why it was chosen. Sharing these stories supports development of vocabulary and language skills.”

The Difference Between Collecting and Hoarding

If a child is constantly picking up random objects, you may believe that something deeper going on. In fact, it’s not only adults who hoard—it can be children, too. But there are distinct differences between simply collecting and hoarding. According to Dr. Taylor, collecting and hoarding are different, and parents may want to review their child’s actions for this distinction.

She says, “A collection has thematic coherence, and children often take pride in their collections. They want to share them with others. Hoarding is inherently different. Children may be collecting any items they believe will be useful to them in the future without organization of coherence (i.e. random items are in a pile on the floor).”

A couple indicators of childhood hoarding may be that they feel embarrassed or uncomfortable allowing people to see or handle items from their collections.

“Children may also have minimal understanding of why they’re collecting these items,” Dr. Taylor explains. “They also show increased anxiety when others touch or take these items without their permission, which could be an indication that children need intervention.”

As research says, around two percent of adolescents display clinical levels of hoarding.

What Are the Benefits of Collecting Random Objects?

Although collecting can, in rare cases, indicate hoarding, most of the time, it’s actually a really positive thing.

“Starting and maintaining a collection can result in stress reduction, enhanced cognitive function, social connection and achievement,” Dr. Taylor points out.

“There’s a sense of accomplishment that comes with developing and curating a collection," she continues. "In some cases, collections can signify emotional processing. They may be a means of connecting with a lost loved one or function as a way of memorializing that person. All of these benefits support healthy development in children and adolescents.”

1978 Hit, Originally 9 Minutes Long, Was This Legendary Rock Band’s Final No. 1 U.S. Single

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 4:55am

Born out of a jam session between Mick Jaggerand Billy Preston, the song "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones became the first single for the Some Girls album. Keith Richards ended up being credited as a co-writer on the track, as was the case with all originals by The Stones.

There is some discrepancy within the band about what type of song they'd conceived. Richards was adamant that they handed created a disco track, whereas Jagger insisted the song was a fabulous disco number saying, "'Miss You' was a damn good disco record; it was calculated to be one."

Regardless, what was happening in dance clubs and discos at the time heavily influenced the track with the song featuring several studio musicians unlike most other Stones songs. Bassist Bill Wyman claimed the riff he put in "Miss You" was copied for an entire year after the fact by everyone from Rod Stewart to "every band in the world."

The original recording of "Miss You" clocked in at over nine minutes long but was edited down to five minutes for the album, and three-and-a-half minutes for the radio version. Separate mixes were constructed and then edited for continuity's sake when constructing the edited versions for radio.

"Miss You" was released on May 10th, 1978 and went on to be the last number-one single in the United States for The Rolling Stones. The song hit the top five on the charts in August of 1978, and it peaked at number three in the United Kingdom.

Multiple live versions of "Miss You" have been recorded over the years. A first was captured during the Rolling Stones' 1989–1990 Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour and was included on the 1991 live album, Flashpoint. The November 1981 performance included on Let's Spend the Night Together was also recorded, as was the July 1995 performances released on Totally Stripped in 2016.

When creating their list of the "500 Best Songs of All Time," Rolling Stone magazine listed "Miss You" at 498.

1977 Live Rock Classic, Lasting Over 8 Minutes, Was Reimagined From Blues Legend's 1954 Hit

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 4:48am

In 1977, Foghat had an unexpected hit with the song “I Just Want to Make Love to You.”

The live version of the song peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1977, five years after the original version opened the English rocker band's debut 1972 album.

"I Just Want to Make Love to You" was a cover of the 1954 Top 4 R&B hit written by blues legend Willie Dixon and recorded by Muddy Waters under the title “Just Make Love to Me.”

But Foghat’s version, from the album Foghat Live, gave the song a hard rock twist. The track recorded at the Dome Arena in Henrietta, New York, featured a blistering slide guitar solo performed by founding Foghat guitarist Rod Price, which extended the song to over eight and a half minutes.

In an interview with Gary James’ Classic Bands, Foghat drummer Roger Earl looked back on the song’s origin story. “’I Just Want to Make Love to You’ was written by Willie Dixon. It was first recorded by Muddy Waters,” he noted.

In a separate interview with Vintage Rock, Earl revealed the band was lucky enough to later meet Dixon and jam with him.

“That was absolutely one of the musical highlights of my life,” he shared. “Back in ’78, we were doing the Stone Blue Tour. ‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’ came out on our first album
and was the single release on Foghat Live. Willie Dixon was, of course, the writer, and unlike some others I won’t mention that would steal his songs, we credited Willie with the songs, and for nearly eight years, he was getting all this money from a band called Foghat because we credited him, rightly, for the song.”

Foghat had been playing a series of shows in Chicago when Dixon and his wife stopped by to meet them backstage.

“Willie was very funny and very gracious,” Earl continued. “They invited us to his house next time we were coming to Chicago. The next time we were in town, we went to Willie’s house over on the south side and hung out ’til like three or four in the morning, drinking and eating and singing and everybody playing guitar and piano
all of us and everyone in his family played and sang too. We talked about blues artists he’d known over the years, and played the old 78-rpm records of the blues guys. It was thrilling to meet one of our heroes. He was a very genuine and great man. We certainly weren’t let down.”

Foghat also had the opportunity to play with Waters during the "Foghat Blues Tribute" fundraiser at the Palladium in New York City in late 1977.

“We put on a show with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Paul Butterfield, Johnny Winter, Eddie ‘Bluesman’ Kirkland, Otis Blackwell, Honey Boy Edwards and others, and we were basically the house band for the night,“ he recalled.

“It was such a highlight of our careers, and my life
playing 'I Just Want To Make Love To You' with Muddy, John Lee Hooker and backing up Paul Butterfield and Johnny and all of them,” the Foghat legend added. “Without any doubt, it was the highlight of my music career.”

1939 Beloved Movie Officially Ranked the 'Greatest Fantasy Film of All Time'

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 4:03am

I am unabashedly one of the biggest fantasy movie nerds I know. As a little girl, I'd often sit in the park looking out at the trees, hoping I'd see a fairy whiz out from behind a bush or catch a gnome scampering across the forest floor. My head was always in the clouds, and as an adult, I am 90% proud of still being that way (and maybe 10% embarrassed). I can, without a doubt, trace it back to a movie that was on repeat in my house: The Wizard of Oz.

The 1939 film, which has inspired film lovers for 87 years, was recently named the "Greatest Fantasy Movie of All Time" by the American Film Institute, ranking number one among 100 beloved films. Other notable films, such as The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946), also made the top 10. AFI defines the genre as films in which "live-action characters inhabit imagined settings and/or experience situations that transcend the rules of the natural world," and The Wizard of Oz undoubtedly fits that description to a-T.

The Film's Humble Origins

In 1900, author L. Frank Baum penned this children's classic as one of the first distinctly American novels. The premise of people already having what they perceived they lacked felt particularly poignant during this tumultuous time in history, and it spawned a fan base that has lasted over 126 years.

Almost instantly, it began to be adapted into other media. By 1902, it became a stage play. When the novel was adapted into a film in 1939, the plucky heroine was played by the brilliant Judy Garland. The Wizard of Oz was actually a box-office disappointment during its 1939 run due to its massive production budget and the constraints of WWII. It didn't become an undisputed cultural juggernaut until its annual television broadcasts began in 1956.

In 1964, The Wizard of Oz co-stars Garland and Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow, reunited on her variety show and openly discussed the film's and book's impact on them.

“I was brought up on the books of The Wizard of Oz, and my mother told me that these were great philosophies," Bolger said. "There’s a very simple philosophy that everybody has a heart. That everybody had a brain. And everybody had courage. These were the gifts that are given to us on this earth, and if you use them properly, you reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And that pot of gold was a home. And home isn’t just a house or an abode, it’s people who love you and that you love. That’s a home.”

The Wizard of Oz Today

The book and film went on to inspire other offshoots, such as the book Wicked, which was recently adapted into a successful film franchise starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Wicked did not have such a rough transition; it earned $758 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in box-office history, according to Variety.

Even today, Las Vegas' most renowned venue, The Sphere, is still offering visitors an immersive experience based on the film, where moviegoers can feel like they are actually walking along the yellow brick road with Dorothy and Toto.

A film that has inspired that much whimsy for that many years totally deserves this high accolade from AFI.

’80s Metal Band, Disbanded Twice, Announces 2026 Show

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 3:46am

New Order will return to Chile for the first time in seven years this November, but two of the band's longtime members will not take part in the performance because of personal health reasons.

The English new wave group announced on Instagram that drummer Stephen Morris and keyboardist/guitarist Gillian Gilbert "won't be touring for the foreseeable future" and will miss the band's appearance at Primavera Chile, scheduled for Nov. 26-28 in Santiago.

"New Order are very happy to be playing Primavera in Chile in November marking the band's first performance there in seven years.”

The band did not provide additional information about the health issues or specify whether they involve Morris, Gilbert, or both.

Bernard Sumner, the group's founding vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist, will perform at the festival alongside guitarist and keyboardist Phil Cunningham and bassist Tom Chapman, who have toured with New Order since 2011.

View this post on Instagram New Order Chile 2026 Performance

The Chile appearance marks New Order's first performance in the country since 2019. While the group confirmed its participation in Primavera Chile, it did not announce who will replace Morris and Gilbert during the show or whether substitute musicians will be added to the lineup.C

Morris and Gilbert have both been part of New Order since the band was formed in Manchester in 1980. Gilbert briefly stepped away from the band in the early 2000s before returning in 2011.

The couple, who married in 1994, have remained central members of New Order throughout its modern touring era.

The announcement also comes as New Order prepares for a major career milestone later this year. New Order and its predecessor, Joy Division, are scheduled to be inducted together into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Nov. 14 in Los Angeles.

The band has not announced whether it will perform during the induction ceremony. It is also unclear whether Morris and Gilbert's health concerns will affect their attendance.

Former bassist Peter Hook, who left New Order in 2007 after a long-running dispute with the remaining members, has previously said he plans to attend the ceremony.

However, Hook recently told Rolling Stone he does not intend to stand alongside his former bandmates.

"No. No. Not after what they did to me and my family, no. No. I won't stand with them."

Hook also said he would rather perform with Oasis during the ceremony if the opportunity arises.

"Definitely. Without a shadow of a doubt, for that first gig I gave them in 1990. Do you know what? All I can say is that plans from my side are underway. I'm hoping they come to fruition."

Founded in 1980 following the end of Joy Division, New Order became one of the defining bands of the 1980s by blending post-punk with electronic dance music. The group released influential albums including Power, Corruption & Lies, Technique and Substance, while the 1983 single "Blue Monday" became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time.

The band first split in 1993 before reuniting in 1998. After another hiatus, New Order resumed performing in 2011 with Cunningham and Chapman joining the lineup following Hook's departure.

For now, the band's Chile performance will move forward without Morris and Gilbert, while New Order has not announced when the pair may return to touring.

'Queen of New York' Turns 81 Today

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 3:17am

On July 1, Debbie Harry turns 81, marking another milestone for one of the most influential and enduring figures in rock history.

Long before she became the platinum-blonde face of Blondie and the undisputed "Queen of New York," Harry was a young singer trying to break into the music business. In the late 1960s, she performed with the folk-rock group The Wind in the Willows, which released its lone album in 1968. The band never found major commercial success, but the experience marked the beginning of a remarkable career that would eventually change the sound and style of popular music.

Born on July 1, 1945, Harry was adopted as an infant and raised in New Jersey. After graduating from college, she moved to New York City and worked a variety of jobs, including secretary, waitress, go-go dancer and Playboy Bunny, while pursuing a career in music.

Related: ’80s MTV Legend Announces Rare Reunion for 2026 Tour With A Ton of Special Guests

Everything changed when she met guitarist Chris Stein. The pair helped form Blondie in 1974, becoming fixtures at legendary downtown venues like CBGB and Max's Kansas City. Their blend of punk, pop and new wave quickly attracted attention, and by the end of the decade Blondie had become one of the biggest bands in the world.

Between 1979 and 1981, Blondie scored four No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Heart of Glass," "Call Me," "The Tide Is High" and "Rapture." Each showcased a different side of the band, from disco and pop to reggae influences and early hip-hop.

Harry's connection to New York became just as important as her music. As Blondie rose from the clubs of downtown Manhattan to international stardom, she emerged as one of the defining faces of the city's creative scene, moving easily between the worlds of music, fashion and art.

Decades later, W Magazine described her as "forever the queen of downtown New York cool," while another W Magazine feature simply dubbed her the "Queen of New York," a title that reflects her lasting association with the city she has called her creative home for much of her life.

Harry's influence extended well beyond the charts. Her distinctive look, fearless attitude and connections to New York's art scene made her a cultural icon. She became associated with figures like Andy Warhol and helped define the creative energy of downtown Manhattan during one of its most influential eras.

She also built a successful acting career, appearing in films including Videodrome, Hairspray and Cop Land. Even during Blondie's hiatus in the 1980s and 1990s, Harry continued recording music and acting before reuniting with the band for another successful chapter that included the international hit "Maria."

Today, Harry remains one of the most recognizable and respected artists of her generation. In 2023, Rolling Stone included her on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time, honoring a career that has spanned more than five decades.

"The effortless cool that exudes from photos of Deborah Harry in her Blondie prime — and even now — is matched only by hearing her come to life on record. She made it sound easy, though it wasn’t ... by 1978’s Parallel Lines, Harry became a sharpie for the ages ... Even when she tried her hand at rapping on 'Rapture' in 1980, her Noo Yawk charm was irresistible," wrote Rolling Stone.

From her early days with The Wind in the Willows to her reign as Blondie's frontwoman and one of New York's defining cultural figures, Debbie Harry has spent a lifetime proving that true icons never go out of style.

Quote of the Day: Novelist Nora Roberts on How It’s Better To Keep Going Than Not Try at All

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 2:45am

Regardless of your age, if you love romance or thriller novels—or if you’ve spent a good amount of time in a library or bookstore—you’ve most likely know who Nora Roberts is (or at least seen her name on the front of a book). She is a #1 New York Timesbestselling author with over 250 novels, per Macmillan Publishers. Her best-known works include Vision in White, The Witness, The Obsession, The Final Target and many more. And our quote of the dayfeatures Roberts’ words on determination and effort, sharing how she’d rather write something than nothing at all.

According to her own website, Roberts is from Silver Spring, Maryland, went to Catholic school and then worked as a legal secretary. Famously, during a blizzard in 1979, she was stuck indoors with two sons under the age of six and she decided to start writing one of her stories. She went on to publish her first novel, Irish Thoroughbred, in 1981.

Roberts also goes by other names that she publishes under, including J.D. Robb, which is the pen name she uses for the
in Death series, which is also a bestselling collection of books. It has over 60 novels total in the series and follows the life and work of Eve Dallas, a New York City Police and Security Department lieutenant, in a futuristic NYC (the first novel came out in 1995 and the story takes place in 2058).

As Barnes and Noble has shared, Roberts was called “America’s favorite novelist” by The New Yorker, and she truly has made a name and an amazing career for herself. Today’s quote features her great advice for writers that easily translates to every walk of life.

Quote of the Day by Nora Roberts

CanvaPro/Parade

“Even if I’m not writing well, I write through it. I can fix a bad page. I can’t fix a blank one.”

This quote is from an interview with Nora Roberts for USA Today in 1997. She spoke about her writing process, which is where she says the above line:

“She says she would never crib an idea from another book—let alone take dialogue or entire scenes—even if her prose wasn’t coming easily. ‘I believe writing is a discipline. I write every day. Even if I’m not writing well, I write through it. I can fix a bad page. I can’t fix a blank one.’”

A year later, she told another journalist a similar quote when talking about writer’s block.

“Writing is a habit, like exercise,” she said. “You have to write something, even if it’s bad at first. You can always fix it, but you can’t fix a blank page.”

Deeper Meaning of Nora Roberts’ Quote—Determination and Effort

While this quote is specifically about Roberts’ writing process, and if only taken literally can feel very niche or narrow in its meaning, you can actually apply this to so many things in life. Even if you’re not a writer or journalist.

Considering my profession is to write daily, I relate heavily to her quote. However, I also see it for so much more. Actually, off the bat, it reminded me of Yoda’s line in Star Wars: Episode V—The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke Skywalker is whining about his X-wing in the Dagobah lake. He tells Yoda that he’ll try to get the ship back up using the Force, and Yoda replies,

“No. Try not. Do or do not, there is no try.”

Here, the Jedi Master is saying you shouldn’t just “try” to do something, you should either do it or not.

In the same vein, Roberts is saying that she writes to make sure she always has words written on a page, even if it’s not the best. Why? Because that’s better than not having words at all. She’s not "trying" to write but setting out and doing it. It’s better to edit a draft than to have nothing to edit at all.

Outside of writing, this quote means that you should always be determined and put effort into your work, your relationships, your life, etc. If you sit around and do nothing, you have nothing to work with or anything to show for yourself. You don’t even have anything to “edit” or fix, as Roberts put it. Not only will this negatively affect your relationships, but you’re also shooting yourself in the foot by stunting your progress.

Do yourself a favor and give yourself something to work with. Make mistakes so you can improve, rather than playing it safe and not trying anything at all.

More Quotes from Nora Roberts
  • “Some things in life are out of your control. You can make it a party or a tragedy.”
  • “If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place.”
  • “Magic exists. Who can doubt it, when there are rainbows and wildflowers, the music of the wind and the silence of the stars? Anyone who has loved has been touched by magic. It is such a simple and such an extraordinary part of the lives we live.”
  • “I do not feel obliged in my reading. I read to be entertained and to relax, and to go into another world, not because it's good for me.”
  • “When we grow up, we lose the talent for loving without restrictions.”
  • “Feeling too much is a hell of a lot better than feeling nothing.”

Queen Camilla Faces Unexpected Backlash After Sharing Photo With J.K. Rowling

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 2:35am

A controversy has erupted around a photo that was posted to the royal family's official Instagram account, in which Queen Camilla poses with children's author J.K. Rowling.

The queen is facing a serious backlash after hosting the creator of the beloved Harry Potter franchise at the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh.

The choice to post a photo of Rowling on the last day of LGBTQ Pride Month has been criticized as distasteful. Rowling is an anti-trans activist online and her history of sharing anti-trans views goes back to 2019.

The post has attracted thousands of angry comments by people who believe that the royal family's choice to platform Rowling is a huge misstep on their part.

"As an admirer of the Queen and her Reading Room I’m deeply disappointed in her giving a platform to JKR, any month but especially during Pride Month," one commenter wrote.

They added, "There are many other admirable individuals to spotlight who champion reading for children and young people."

"Not a good move during Pride month!" wrote another commenter, while someone else said, "Deeply tone deaf, this is so disappointing."

"This is shameful and sad," read another comment.

Rowling, 60, was welcomed to the Palace of Holyrood House by Camilla, 70, to discuss the queen's childhood reading initiatives.

The caption read, "With a shared passion for books and a deep commitment to children reading for pleasure, The Queen and author J.K. Rowling have met at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

"Her Majesty and Ms Rowling discussed the importance of ensuring that young people have access to books and the vital part reading plays in opening doors for future generations."

Rowling was a financial backer of the gender-critical campaign group For Women Scotland that was successful in pushing the UK Supreme Court to define womanhood by biological sex.

When the Supreme Court ruled in 2025 that trans women would be stripped of the right to adopt the legal definition of a woman, Rowling wrote on social media, “It took three extraordinary, tenacious Scottish women with an army behind them to get this case heard by the supreme court."

She added, “I’m so proud to know you.”

Rowling also posted a selfie of herself smoking a cigar to celebrate the Supreme Court's ruling with the caption, "I love it when a plan comes together."

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) April 16, 2025

Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have distanced themselves from the author's viewpoints in the years and have publicly expressed their support of the trans community.

Back in 2020 following Rowling's first wave of anti-trans comments, Radcliffe issued a statement in which he said, "I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J. K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now."

He went on to say, "Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

He later said of his statement, "I wanted to try and help people that had been negatively affected by the comments.

"And to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everybody associated with the Potter franchise.”

He went on, "It makes me really sad, ultimately."

43 Years Ago Today a Beloved '80s Band Signed Their First Deal and Almost Called Themselves 'Johnny Electric'

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 2:17am

Growing up in Northeast Philadelphia, there were several major Catholic high schools, each with its own personality. That was especially true for the all-boys and all-girls schools. The Father Judge crew was known for two things around the early 2000s: the fact that if the pope sneezed, they'd get off from school, and their deep and unabiding love for Bon Jovi.

At any of the annual school dances there, if "Livin' on a Prayer" came on, the entire gymnasium froze and promptly screamed-sang the lyrics. And that was 17 years later, after they originally shot to fame in 1983. It never would have happened if 43 years ago today, on July 1, 1983, Bon Jovi hadn't signed with Mercury Records.

According to Jersey station New Jersey 101.5, the quintet had been playing together for some time when an employee suggested they take a page out of Van Halen's playbook and name the band after frontman John Francis Bongiovi Jr. To make it easier for radio DJs to pronounce it, he phonetically split his surname and ended up with the stage moniker Jon Bon Jovi.

Related: Jon Bon Jovi Is "Always on the Floor" With Millie Bobby Brown's Baby

From a Humble Beginning to a 43-Year Career

Though he had been playing in bands since he was 13, Jon Bon Jovi's career really began to take off while he was working as a janitor at his cousin Tony Bongiovi's famed recording studio, Power Station. According to American Songwriter, he began writing promos for WAPP "The Apple" when the promotional director asked him if he could include his demo song—a little ditty known as "Runaway"—on his homegrown talent album.

While reluctant, he ultimately agreed, and it won over listeners. He joined along with David Bryan, Tico Torres, Alec John Such, and Dave “Snake” Sabo, who would later go on to form Skid Row. After Richie Sambora joined, the group changed its name and procured a Top 40 hit with "Runaway" just a year later.

Just two years after forming in 1986, Bon Jovi released their third album, Slippery When Wet, which would be the record that changed their lives forever. The album spent eight weeks at No. 1, and Billboard declared it to be the best-selling album of 1987.

In 2018, the band solidified its legacy and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On the anniversary of their formation, they announced their latest album, Forever, in 2024, and the band continues to perform.

And to think we all could have been screaming for "Johnny Electric" had one of the record company's employees not made that suggestion all those decades ago.

Why Brandon Lake Has 23 Strangers' Names Permanently Tattooed on His Leg

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 1:30am

Brandon Lake revealed the unique way he financed his first album.

The singer admitted, "I was willing to do anything short of sin to get this record done. Anything short of sin,” during an interview withCBS Mornings that aired on Tuesday, June 30.

His first album, Closer, was published independently in 2016 with the help of an unconventional fundraising method that left him with a permanent reminder.

"I decided, 'I'm going to have to ask people for money and raise this money,'" Lake said.

"I said, 'If you give me a certain amount of money, I'll tattoo your name on my leg,'" he continued. "I have 23 last names tattooed on my thigh — 23 to get the record done."

The 36-year-old singer also spoke about the "panic" and "dark thoughts" he experienced after finding success. He looked to religion while struggling with this huge change.

"I'm like, 'This is not who I am. I'm on the mountaintop right now. My dreams are coming true and it's just crazy.' I guess I'd say a lot of people's lowest moments come from a low moment," Lake shared. "Mine came from a high moment."

His latest album, King of Hearts - in the Room!, was recorded live during his most recent tour. Lake took to Instagram to celebrate after the record was released on Friday, June 26.

"I could try forever to describe the presence of God in the room during these nights. This tour is one of those markers on my life that I'll tell the stories of for decades. Thank you, Lord, for Your faithfulness. Thank you for the hundreds of thousands of lives changed. Thank you that you're not finished yet," he wrote on the social media platform.

The singer came out with King of Hearts in April 2025. He shared his inspiration behind the record on Instagram after it was released.

"I'm not sure if I knew who this record was for when I started writing it, but as the songs came the more I realized it was not for the seemingly put together, but rather those who are honest about their brokenness, but also have a desire to connect with their creator and experience Him in everyday life," Lake wrote.

"This creator is King of the universe, King of Nations, King of creation, but none more important than King of hearts. ♄" he added.

’70s Rock Band Postpones Two Shows Amid 2026 Tour

Wed, 07/01/2026 - 12:38am

Rush has postponed two remaining performances in Fort Worth, Texas, after frontman Geddy Lee was diagnosed with laryngitis and bronchitis, forcing the legendary Canadian rock band to delay part of its long-awaited 2026 Fifty Something reunion tour.

The band shared the announcement with fans through Instagram, confirming that the Tuesday and Thursday concerts at Dickies Arena would no longer take place as scheduled after Lee's doctors advised him to take more time to recover before returning to the stage.

The postponed Tuesday performance has been rescheduled for July 11, while the previously delayed Thursday concert will now take place on July 13.

Rush confirmed that all previously purchased tickets will remain valid for the new dates. Fans who cannot attend may request refunds through their original point of purchase.

The latest postponements come less than a week after the band was forced to reschedule its original June 24 Fort Worth concert because of unforeseen travel and border-related delays while returning to the United States following performances in Mexico City.

View this post on Instagram

That June 24 concert was initially moved to July 2. However, with Lee's illness, the rescheduled July 2 performance has now been pushed back again to July 13.

Despite the early disruption, Rush successfully performed its June 26 and June 28 concerts at Dickies Arena before announcing the latest changes.

The band thanked everyone involved in helping secure replacement dates and expressed appreciation for fans who have continued supporting the tour.

The Fifty Something tour marks Rush's first major tour in more than a decade and the band's first since ending its original run in 2015.

The reunion features founding members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, with acclaimed drummer Anika Nilles joining the lineup following the death of longtime drummer Neil Peart in 2020. Keyboardist Loren Gold also performs as part of the touring band.

The tour began on June 7, 2026, in Inglewood, California, before moving through Mexico City and Fort Worth. After Texas, the extensive trek will continue across the United States and Canada before expanding into South America and Europe in 2027.

Rush originally formed in Toronto in 1968 and has become one of Canada's most successful rock bands. The group has sold more than 40 million records worldwide and is known for classic songs including "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight" and "The Spirit of Radio."

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees reunited for the "Fifty Something" Tour after Lee and Lifeson announced the comeback in October 2025.

Although the Fort Worth schedule has experienced multiple changes, the band said the remainder of the tour is expected to continue after Lee has fully recovered.

Fans attending the rescheduled Texas concerts will be able to use their original tickets, while refund options remain available for those unable to attend the new dates.
