It’s been 50 years since Boston released their debut single, “More Than a Feeling.” The song was the first track from the legendary band’s self-titled 1976 debut album and has been a classic rock radio anthem ever since.

Released in September 1976, "More Than a Feeling” stood out for its signature guitar riff and layered vocals. The song peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Dec. 25, 1976, remaining on the chart for 19 weeks. In 2025, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked the Boston hit as one of the top 100 classic rock songs of all time, noting that the band “burst into the airways” with their lead track “in the fall of America's bicentennial celebration of 1976.”

“With a sound that was unique and yet somehow familiar, Boston were tailor-made for mid '70s FM radio,” the outlet noted, describing the band's debut song as “a rush of sunshine-laced guitars and vocals.”

“More Than a Feeling” firmly established Boston as one of the biggest rock bands of the 1970s.

The song took five years to write

Writing “More Than a Feeling” was no easy feat. According to Rolling Stone, Boston founding songwriter-guitarist Tom Scholz worked on the song for five years in his basement studio. In an essay for Entertainment Weekly, Scholz revealed that the song was not about a specific event but instead something that almost everybody could identify with: “Losing somebody that was important to them, and music taking them back there.”

He also revealed he and bandmate Brad Delp were rejected by record labels many times before he made a last-ditch effort with “More Than a Feeling.”

“I spent six years submitting dozens of recordings to dozens of record companies and I got nothing but rejections,” he shared. “By this point, I was 29 and I decided it was time to get responsible. I was married. We weren't rolling in cash. This was going to be my last demo—and ‘More Than a Feeling’ was the last one that I completed. Epic Records got that song and a couple of weeks later, Brad Delp and I had an offer to become recording artists.”

Scholz once noted that Epic Records executives had previously passed on his music.

“Epic flat-out rejected it and sent me an insulting letter!” Scholz told Maximum Guitar of his early demos, per Music Radar. "Then later, someone went through the proper political channels with Epic and all of a sudden, they were interested. Still, we didn’t get signed until they heard ‘More Than A Feeling.'"

Scholz said he was thankful that fans still love the song decades later.

Delp also talked about the song's longevity. In a 1999 interview posted by Melodic.net, he said, “I’ve had many people come up and say that ‘More Than A Feeling’ was their song when they were in high school or college. It's nice to feel that you’ve touched so many people in some small way."

The song seemingly inspired a future iconic rock riff

Boston went on to inspire future rock bands. Fifteen years  after “More Than a Feeling" was released, Nirvana ushered in the mainstream grunge scene with their song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Some fans thought the guitar riff in the Nirvana song sounded like the famous riff in “More Than a Feeling” in a different key.

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain later noted the similarity, telling Rolling Stone, “It was such a cliched riff. It was so close to a Boston riff or ‘Louie Louie.’ When I came up with the guitar part, Krist [Novoselic] looked at me and said, ‘That is so ridiculous.'”

Nirvana further embraced the Boston connection by playing “More Than a Feeling” to a crowd at the Reading Festival in the UK in 1992.

Scholz didn’t consider Nirvana’s riff to be a ripoff. He told the outlet he took the similarity as “a major compliment even if it was completely accidental.”

“It made me feel good that Nirvana listened to Boston at all and ever wanted to mention it,” Scholz told Classic Rock in 2006.

We've all been there before: after picking up the perfect book series, you let it alter your brain chemistry forever, allowing it to become your personality for at least six months. But after you're done reading it, it's hard to find something that even comes close. For a lot of Heated Rivalry fans, that probably sounds all too familiar. After devouring that novel—and most likely the rest in the Game Changers series it belongs to (by Nova Scotia author Rachel Reid), you're probably looking for other books like Heated Rivalry to really scratch that itch.

Nothing has hit quite like this series's success. The niche, queer-sports romance books have crossed over into mainstream audiences, even spawning the first season of the hit show by Canadian streaming service, Crave. American audiences were then introduced to Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov in late 2025 when HBO Max brought the series to its platform.

Heated Rivalry is the second book in the Game Changers series, which is currently comprised of six novels, two of which are about Shane and Ilya directly. Reid is working on a third book about the fictional couple (and the seventh in the series)—it's coming out in June 2027, which is later than originally expected due to the sudden fame and also Reid's Parkinson's symptoms, which she was diagnosed with in 2023, according to the Associated Press.

The foundational gay hockey romance series, though, has taken the literary world by storm. Perhaps most likely because it intertwines secrecy and love affairs, a tension that says, "We shouldn’t be doing this," according to public librarian Brynn Hurley, who goes by the TikTok handle @brynn.hb.

So, if you need more books likeHeated Rivalry (for fans who just can't get enough of similar genres and character arcs!) that you can go read right now, she shares several with Parade.

What Is ‘Heated Rivalry’ by Rachel Reid?

First published in 2019, the book Heated Rivalry tells the story of two rival professional hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. In the series, Hollander is a Canadian player who plays for the fictional team, Montreal Voyageurs, while Rozanov, a Russian athlete, plays for the fictional Boston Bears. 

Both players are huge hockey stars, but harbor a secret: their casual, albeit spicy romance that turns into something big and real. 

The series TV adaptation follows the same plot line, played by Hudson Williams (Hollander) and Connor Storrie (Rozanov), and the rest is history. It eventually turned into a huge cultural phenomenon, showcasing a queer sports story that hasn’t typically been seen before. 

The book’s general story has introduced overdue conversations on LGBTQ+ representation in the sports world, with queer romance becoming a huge sub-genre lately, according to the University of Alberta. 

Hurley agrees with that notion, saying that the book series isn't just about a sports romance.

"From a reader’s advisory perspective, Heated Rivalry isn’t just 'a hockey romance,'" the librarian shares. "It’s really about emotional intensity, secrecy and long-term tension between two people who can’t quite let each other go."

What Kind of Books Feel Like ‘Heated Rivalry’?

Is this series too niche to replicate? Do similar books have to have a queer romance element, mixed with an athletic storyline?

It might depend on who you ask, but Hurley says "appeal factors" have a lot to do with this. Some of those factors include a "high-intensity, character-driven romance, often rivals-to-lovers or forbidden," she shares.

An "emotional arc that spans time," as well as "some level of secrecy," are also good elements to look out for when choosing a book that feels comparable.

While not needing to be exclusively revolving around an LGBTQ+ storyline, some of those factors are what fans of Heated Rivalry loved most about the books and the TV series. Hurley says these aspects matter when it comes to appeal.

"Queer romances often capture that same tension and stakes, especially around visibility and identity, while sports settings naturally heighten rivalry, pressure and public scrutiny," she explains. "That being said, I’d still recommend non-sports or even non-queer titles if they deliver the same emotional payoff and intensity because I feel like that’s really what readers are chasing."

7 Books Like ‘Heated Rivalry,’ According to a Librarian

It's so true that some of us would love the chance to read Heated Rivalry for the very first time again. But if you've already read it and are craving something with similar tensions, vibes and storylines, Hurley gives some suggestions for your next big read.

1. 'Him' by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy

This hockey romance is a sports-related gem of a find for anyone who liked Heated Rivalry. The Him book series tells the story of two former friends who later reconnect in adulthood, when their college teams are about to face each other at a championship. 

“It has strong emotional history and chemistry, making it a good fit for readers who liked the relationship depth in Heated Rivalry," says Hurley. “But it’s less centered on secrecy.”

2. 'Gravity' by Tal Bauer

This book is a great example of a “hockey romance that explores identity and being openly queer in professional sports,” according to Hurley. 

“It matches the emotional stakes and pressures of a high-profile athletic career, though it’s more about visibility than a hidden relationship,” she shares. 

3. 'The Foxhole Court' by Nora Sakavic

Another gay male sports-focused tale that is just as character-driven as Heated Rivalry, The Foxhole Court is the first book in the All for the Game series. The premiere story may feel like déjà vu for Heated Rivalry fans, since it focuses on many of the book's similar aspects.

The first three books in the series revolve around Neil Josten, who is the son of a murderer on the run. As part of his fake identity, he signs up with his college team's "Exy" team, a fictional sport that resembles a cross between lacrosse and hockey. Not only does he stay on the team to keep hiding who he really is, but to get closer to the goalkeeper, Andrew Minyard.

“Romance is secondary, but the intense rivalries, loyalty and long-term character arcs will appeal to readers who liked the emotional investment of Heated Rivalry," says Hurley.

4. 'Red, White & Royal Blue' by Casey McQuiston

In a book that may just be the royal alternative to Heated Rivalry, this novel centers around the fictional first son of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz, and his rival—and romantic interest, eventually—a British monarch, the fictional Prince Henry of England.

While not as spicy as Heated Rivalry, Hurley assures that it contains a relationship that must be kept under wraps from their public and royal subjects.

"The secret relationship and public scrutiny create similar tension, but the tone is lighter and more rom-com-leaning," Hurley states.

5. 'Captive Prince' by C. S. Pacat

In the first book of the Captive Prince trilogy, a prince named Damen is sent to live in a rival kingdom, where he has to work as a slave and hide his true identity. While navigating the court and other struggles, he must also deal with the growing tension between him and the powerful Prince Laurent as feelings begin to shift between the two.

The book is what Hurley calls a "fantasy enemies-to-lovers story with a slow-burn relationship that develops over a trilogy."

"The dynamic is more political and power-driven, but it shares the long-term tension and complicated emotional evolution," she notes.

6. 'The Favorites' by Layne Fargo

Anyone who enjoyed reading the heated, but passionate relationship between Shane and Ilya will find something to read on about in this sports romance pick by Layne Fargo.

"A toxic, obsessive relationship set against a competitive backdrop," Hurley says about this novel. "The rivalry, ambition and emotional volatility make it a great fit for readers who liked the intensity of Shane and Ilya."

7. 'You Should See Me in a Crown' by Leah Johnson

You Should See Me in a Crown explores themes in Heated Rivalry such as discovering yourself and wanting to be heard.

The book follows a high school student named Liz who is running for prom queen, and hopes to win a college scholarship. While dealing with internet trolls, catty girls and popularity, she starts to fall for the new girl in school.

"It’s much lighter in tone," says Hurley of this YA novel. "But it still explores identity, visibility and being seen, offering a softer connection."

Amy Sherman-Palladino found great TV success with Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but when it comes to her equally great ballet-focused titles, much less so: Both Bunheads (the 2012 ABC Family dramedy about a former professional Las Vegas showgirl who teaches dance in a sleepy, coastal California town) and last year's Étoile (a Prime Video series about two world-renowned dance companies who trade their most talented stars to drum up interest in the failing institutions) sadly never made it to a second season.

Gordita Chronicles tells the childhood story of Latina reporter Cucu Castelli in 1980s Miami.

"Like its heroine, Gordita Chronicles shows the potential to grow into something special — and also like its heroine, it’s sweet enough to earn our patience while finding its way there," Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter wrote of the sweet and funny series.

Based off the classic 1992 baseball movie of the same name and similarly centered on the formation of a World War II-era women's professional baseball team, Prime Video hit a home run with A League of Their Own, which was co-created by Broad City's Abbi Jacobson (who also stars as wannabe catcher Carson Shaw) and Will Graham. The streamer actually picked up the sporty period piece for a four-episode second season but scrapped those plans in the wake of the WGA strike.

Few Netflix shows are quite as fun as Julie and the Phantoms, a musical comedy about a high schooler (Madison Reyes) who accidentally summons the ghosts of three dreamy but deceased musicians from the '90s and forms a supernatural band with the lads. However, we only got to watch Julie and company rock out for nine episodes, as the streamer canceled the series after one season in December 2021.

Prime Video canceled its science-fiction drama Night Sky after one eight-episode season.

Holmes and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, a likeable trio of lonely hearts in Brooklyn's Crown Heights.

Netflix got rid of its Lord of the Flies-esque teen thriller The Society due to COVID-19 delays.

A little bit Lord of the Flies, a little bit of Yellowjackets, this 2019 teen thriller centers on a group of high schoolers (led by Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, Sean Berdy, Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Jacques Climon) who returned from a canceled field trip to find their parents, teachers and all other adults gone and a mysterious, confining forest in their wake, forcing the kiddos to form their own society to survive. The series was initially picked up for a season two, which was ultimately thwarted by COVID-19-related delays.

Starring Michael Raymond-James and Donal Logue, FX's Terriers is another great show that got away.

Netflix is no stranger to telekinetic teens (hi Eleven!), but it found a particularly great one in Sophia Lillis' Syd Novak. The dark comedy earned positive response from critics but was yet another casualty of the COVID pandemic and was canceled after one season in August 2020.

Starring an ever-game Kirsten Dunst, this '90s-set Showtime satire revolves around Dunst's Krstal Stubbs, an Orlando water-park employee drowning in debt following her husband's death. She seeks financial revenge by rising up the ranks at Founders American Merchandise, the cult-like pyramid scheme that caused the couple's money problems in the first place. The series was renewed from a second season in September 2019, but Showtime reversed the renewal, citing COVID challenges.

Still, the atmospheric show — which follows an archivist (Mamoudou Athie) who gets pulled into the mystery of a missing grad-school filmmaker (Dina Shihabi) — was axed after just one season in March 2022.

Despite being dubbed "brisk and funny, warm and wonderfully oddball" by critics like Entertainment Weekly's Kristen Baldwin, the crime comedy couldn't outrun a Netflix cancellation.

However, it's still an enjoyable watch, following the dysfunctional cast of an early-2000s sitcom who get a second chance at stardom when the old comedy gets revived for a reboot, all of their lingering personal problems be damned.

Our titular guys are the winning duo of Bradley Whitford (as old-school detective Dan Stark) and Colin Hanks (as by-the-book rookie Jack Bailey), whose unexpected buddy act and unorthodox methods are used to solve minor petty crimes in Texas. Though the FOX cop comedy had plenty of energy and humor, it had a hard time finding an audience during its original summer 2020 run and was canceled by the end of that year.

Netflix caught a lot of flak for canceling this coming-of-age comedy — starring Miles Heizer as a closeted teen who enlists in the Marines alongside his best friend in pre-Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell America — after just one season, despite considerable love from fans and wide praise from critics. (The series has a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.) Alas, criticism from the U.S. government, who weren't happy about the series' "woke" portrayal of military service, reportedly played a part in the show getting discharged.

It took about half a decade to develop the FX post-apocalyptic drama Y the Last Man — based on the comic series of the same name, about a mysterious cataclysmic event that simultaneously kills every mammal with a Y chromosome, all but Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer) and his pet monkey Ampersand–but only a mere month to get canceled by the network. Its short run was made even more disappointing because the show "improves so much over the course of its first six episodes that its potential feels limitless," wrote Judy Berman of TIME.

From Moulin Rouge to Elvis, Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, Elvis) brought his brand of over-the-top-spectacle to Netflix with The Get Down, a 1970s-set series chronicling the bird of hip-hop in New York City. However, "a funny thing happened on the way to cancellation: Selfie got better," wrote Eric Francisco for Inverse. "Cho and Gillan displayed more comfort in their roles — and their chemistry became electric, then downright hot."

Critics praised the show's "terrific cast" and "inspired fight choreography" — it earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for Comedy Programming — but The Brothers Sun was still axed after only a single season.

Given all of the awards love it received (it earned 18 Emmy nominations and won two, and scored Critics Choice wins for lead actress Jurnee Smollett, supporting actor Michael K. Williams and the show itself for Best Horror Series), it was a bit of a surprise that HBO didn't continue on with the historical fantasy drama following its first season. A continuation of Matt Ruff's 2016 novel, the series follows young Black man Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he travels across Jim Crow-era America in search of his missing father.

Grosse Pointe was a memorable teen-soap satire that aired on The WB for just 17 episodes.

Not to be confused with the recent Grosse Pointe Garden Society (which, funnily enough, was also canceled after only one season), the Darren Starr-created Grosse Pointe was a WB sitcom that sharply satirized — what else? — WB sitcoms. A "sassy, catty riot," per TIME, the show centered on five actors starring in a 90210-esque high school drama, but it didn't last nearly as long as the types of series it was making fun of and was canceled 17 episodes in February 2001.

It would sadly also be one of Duncan's final acting roles, as the performer passed away four months after The Finder's series finale.

Despite its intriguing premise and cool 1970s atmosphere, the neo-noir's cancellation was announced in May 2016.

The coming-of-age show was positively compared toStranger Things and Degrassi, yet only survived for a single season on the streamer.

Few series feel as iconically '90s at My So-Called Life, which made a star of then-teenaged lead Claire Danes — who earned a Golden Globe for his portrayal of 15-year-old Angela Chase — and was a lovingly relatable take on the lives of suburban high schoolers (played by Jared Leto, Wilson Cuz, Devon Gummersall and A.J. Langer). Russell Dickerson and Keith Urban recently spent time overseas at the Country to Country Music Festival. While on the red carpet at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards, the “Yours” singer-songwriter spoke highly of his musical hero, whom he now considers a friend.

Dickerson, 38, said that while he hasn’t gotten a chance to shred on guitar alongside Urban just yet, the “Blue Ain’t Your Color” crooner, 58, did manage to watch his entire set from the side stage. 

“It was very cool for him to watch [me perform my set],” Dickerson acknowledged. “It’s just planting seeds. Now he knows I can rip, and maybe one day I can get up and rip with him.” 

Urban recently made headlines outside of country music when news broke that he and Nicole Kidman, 58, were getting a divorce following 19 years of marriage. The Oscar-winning actress filed for divorce from the country hitmaker in September 2025, and their divorce was finalized on Jan. 6, 2026. 

Speaking on how Urban appears to be navigating the split, Dickerson said, “I think he’s doing great. We didn’t get to spend tons of time together, but he seems to be in good spirits.” 

“He’s always been focused on music, and so I think he’s just kind of doubling down on that, and it’s just beautiful,” he continued. “I can’t wait to hear what comes out of it.”

Dickerson’s suggestion is likely correct as Urban recently teased an upcoming covers album during a performance at Country Radio Seminar (CRS) in Nashville, Tenn.

“It’s a thematic record (of) yacht rock songs,” Urban told the crowd during his set at the Ryman Auditorium. “You think I’mkidding? I’m not kidding.”

Pack your bags and grab your ears because the wait is finally over: the most ambitious transformation in the history of Disneyland Paris is officially here. While the resort is technically calling this a "reimagining" of its second gate, anyone walking through the gates this week will tell you it feels like a brand-new kingdom has risen from the ground.

On the eve of its public opening on March 29, 2026, the park formerly known as Walt Disney Studios Park has been reborn as Disney Adventure World, marking the first time since the resort opened its second gate that fans have seen an expansion of this magnitude.

The star of the show is, without a doubt, the breathtaking World of Frozen. Stepping into Arendelle feels less like visiting a theme park and more like walking straight into the screen, complete with the 118-foot-tall North Mountain and Elsa’s Ice Palace shimmering in the distance.

The celebration wasn't just about the scenery—it was a true A-list affair. The festivities kicked off on Friday with a visit from French President Emmanuel Macron, who joined Disney leadership to highlight the park's massive impact on European tourism. As the grand opening approached, the guest list read like a global talent directory.

Among the icons walking the blue carpet were French cinema legend Isabelle Huppert and Emily in Paris favorite Lucas Bravo. They were joined by Academy Award-winner Penélope Cruz and recent Golden Globe winner Teyana Taylor, who both got an exclusive preview of the park’s new magic. The ceremony reached a heartfelt peak when 11-year-old Lou from Make-A-Wish joined the stage to sing "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" with a high-tech, robotic Olaf.

Ashley McBryde may be a country music star, but she just proved she can channel any genre solo with only a guitar in hand. 

On Saturday, March 28, the Arkansas native, 42, took to Instagram to deliver a stripped-down take of Tommy James & the Shondells’ 1967 pop hit, “I Think We’re Alone Now,” which was later made famous a second time by teen pop sensation Tiffany in 1987.

“The song stuck in my head today is: ‘I think we’re alone now’ by Tiffany (1987), but also by Tommy James & the Shondells back in 1967. What song is stuck in YOUR head today?” McBryde captioned alongside her video, which features her dressed in head-to-toe denim. 

Strumming on her acoustic six-string, McBryde showcases her effortless vocals and signature twang on the track, giving it a countryfied flair in contrast to the Tiffany smash. McBryde threw all of her energy into her on-the-fly take, without the need for a backup band, earning plenty of praise from her followers.

“Love this 👏,” one person wrote, while another follower added, “Release this PLEASE.” 

“Wow, that took me way back in time 😍 thank you,” a third fan wrote.

“I loved that song when I was growing up. Now I’m singing it because it’s stuck in my head. And, it’s kinda creepy. I don’t know.  I don’t want to analyze the lyrics. I like that song. It’s a jam. Now it’s in your head. You’re welcome,” McBryde said at the end of the video.
