Child Psychologist Reveals 7 Key Traits of Parents Who Raise Outspoken Children
We're so past the days when children were expected to be seen and not heard. However, what if you (and teachers) hear your child a lot? They may get labeled "disruptive" at school for interrupting or get gold stars for being a "joy to have in class," only to come home and have a tantrum. Sound familiar? This might mean your child is outspoken. Dr. Amy Kincaid Todey, Ph.D., a child psychologist with Todey Psychology, regularly works with parents of outspoken children. She empathizes with them.
"Short-term challenges may include more power struggles at home, higher emotional intensity and social friction if empathy and impulse control aren’t explicitly taught," Dr. Todey says. "Long-term risks, if not mitigated through parenting support, can include conflict with authority, risk-taking behavior or peer rejection if social awareness is underdeveloped."
No pressure, right?
The good news is that Dr. Todey says that outspoken kids are their own best advocates, rarely staying silent when something feels wrong.
"That can be exhausting, but it is also protective," she shares, adding that these kids often grow up to be leaders and entrepreneurs.
Also, for what it's worth, parenting matters, but it's not everything. Still, the child psychologist says that understanding your own wiring can help you better raise an outspoken child.
"If you are naturally anxious, your child’s boldness may feel threatening," she states. "If you are highly dominant, their assertiveness may feel like defiance. If you are calm and regulated, their intensity may feel like leadership in progress."
To help, Dr. Todey shares seven traits of parents who raise outspoken children, plus a few mistakes to avoid.

What Does an ‘Outspoken' Child Look Like, Exactly?Tatsiana Volkava/Getty Images
"In temperament research, outspoken children often score high in what Mary Rothbart describes as surgency/extraversion—traits that include high activity level, impulsivity, approach behavior and strong positive affect," Dr. Todey explains.
She shares that outspoken children may:
- Have high energy and emotional intensity.
- Take risks more readily.
- Speak up quickly.
- Experience big highs and lows.
- Show leadership and social dominance.
"They can be charismatic and magnetic," she states. "They often stand up for what feels fair. They are willing to raise their hand—or challenge the rule."
Like people of all ages, though, outspoken children face some common challenges.
"At times, they may struggle with perspective-taking or recognizing how their intensity impacts others," she reports. "Without scaffolding, boldness can turn into interrupting, arguing or taking up a disproportionate amount of social space."
That said, she shares that the temperament is not the issue in outspoken children.
"The skill-building around it is what shapes outcomes," she clarifies.

7 Traits of Parents Who Raise Outspoken Children, According to a Child Psychologist1. They're strong regulatorsParents raising outspoken children have to become masters in regulation, which is admittedly challenging during a tantrum (especially if it's not the first one of the day and it's not even noon).
"They understand that escalation fuels escalation," Dr. Todey notes. "Calm containment communicates safety."
Related: Psychologist Says if You Have These 8 Habits, You Are Highly Emotionally Mature
2. They're able to mix warmth with clear structureNo, these two things are not mutually exclusive.
"Parents who raise outspoken children are firm and kind," Dr. Todey explains. "Boundaries are predictable. Love is not conditional."
3. They can masterfully reframe "defiance" as "emerging leadership"This one can get challenging, especially if you get pushback from others, such as family members who still believe children should be seen and not heard. However, Dr. Todey shares that parents who raise outspoken kids can block the literal and figurative noise and adapt a different mindset about their child.
"Instead of asking, 'Why are you so argumentative?' they think, 'You have a strong voice. Let’s learn how to use it well,'" she says.
4. They teach perspective-takingDr. Todey shares that caregivers of outspoken kiddos don't just internalize their perspectives. They open the book and actively coach their children to practice social awareness. She says these parents may tell their child, “You can share your opinion. Let’s also notice how it landed.”
"Teaching kids to always be thinking about other people’s perspectives and emotions can build their empathy and self-control," she states.

5. They're gutsy enough to allow natural consequencesIt's natural to want to remove any consequence or hardship from a child, especially if you can see it coming from a mile away. Especially if you know it will result in a meltdown, but people caring for outspoken kids have learned to stay the course.
"They don’t overprotect from every social misstep," Dr. Todey points out. "Experience becomes teacher, without shame."
6. They have thick skinSelf-regulation and awareness come in clutch regarding the thick skin these parents develop.
"Parents sometimes blame themselves when things do not go right for their child, and this can result in shame and anger, which may be unintentionally directed back towards them," Dr. Todey says. "It can be hard not to judge ourselves, particularly when we feel like other people may be judging us based on our kids’ behavior."
However, she shares that it's vital to keep in mind that intensity is developmental, not a personal attack.
7. They're resourcefulDr. Todey shares that parents know how to tap into school and community resources to challenge an outspoken child's energy rather than trying to squash it.
"They provide outlets such as sports, debate, theater and leadership roles, where strong personalities can thrive constructively," she explains.
3 Common Parenting Mistakes To Avoid With Outspoken Children1. Clamping down with too much controlDr. Todey wants parents of impulsive or intense children to try to increase control in response to these behaviors. It often backfires.
"The difficulty is that harsh authoritarian strategies—high control without warmth—are associated with increased rebellion and conflict," the child psychologist explains. "When intensity is met with force, escalation tends to follow. Structure works. Humiliation and overpowering do not."
2. Removing warmthDr. Todey would be remiss if she didn't double-tap on the "warmth" aspect. She understands why parents may start to act or feel chilly toward their child.
"Outspoken children can be draining," she empathizes. "It’s easy to unconsciously withdraw warmth and operate only in correction mode."
Still, she advises combining warmth with expectations.
"Even strong-willed children need to feel emotionally connected, which helps them accept limits," she shares. "Warmth is not permissiveness. It is regulation."
3. Missing the strengthDr. Todey says it's natural to only see the struggle when you're constantly correcting interruptions or arguments. Yet, she reminds parents that "boldness is raw leadership energy."
"The goal of parenting is not to quiet a child’s personality," she notes. "It is to help them channel their natural gifts into skills that build confidence and social competence. Children develop self-esteem when their strengths are shaped, not shamed."

I Tried an Alice Springs Chicken Dupe and It Hit Just Like the Real Deal
Growing up, one of my favorite places to go out for a celebratory dinner was the Outback Steakhouse located practically across the street from my childhood home. For my family, it was the go-to spot for birthdays, good report cards or really any occasion that deserved a night out.
What’s not celebratory about a steakhouse dinner where there is always a giant blooming onion for the table and their famous dark brown bread (which my brother and I simply called “the chocolate bread” when we were kids)? It felt fancy and fun all at once.
Naturally, when you’re at a steakhouse, you assume the steak is the thing to order. For years, I stuck to my classic filet. But I still remember the first time I veered off course and ordered Alice Springs Chicken instead. I was instantly hooked.
The combination of juicy sautéed chicken, crispy bacon, sautéed mushrooms, melted cheese and that sweet-and-tangy honey mustard sauce was just about perfect—it's rich, savory and comforting in the way a great chicken dish should be.
Alice Springs Chicken also happens to be my husband’s all-time favorite chicken dish, so when I saw a copycat recipe pop up online by @melissajorealrecipes, I knew I had to try making it at home to see if it was as iconic as I remembered. Bonus points: my kids tend to love anything topped with melted cheese, so I had a feeling maybe the love for this dish would be genetic.

What Is Alice Springs Chicken and Why Is It Called That?Alice Springs Chicken is one of the most well-known dishes on the Outback Steakhouse menu. The dish features grilled or pan-seared chicken breasts topped with sautéed mushrooms, crispy bacon, melted Colby Jack cheese and a signature honey mustard sauce.
The name comes from Alice Springs, a town located in the Northern Territory of Australia. While the dish itself isn’t actually a traditional Australian recipe, the name fits with Outback Steakhouse’s Australian-themed branding.

Like many of the restaurant’s menu items, the name helps evoke the spirit of the Australian Outback, even though the restaurant chain itself was founded in the United States.
Regardless of the name’s origins, the flavor combination is what keeps people coming back. The mix of smoky bacon, savory mushrooms, gooey cheese and sweet honey mustard sauce creates a rich, satisfying dish that’s easy to see why fans love recreating at home.

This copycat recipe keeps things simple while still delivering those classic Outback flavors.
To make the honey mustard dressing, you’ll combine mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and honey until smooth and well blended.
For the chicken itself, you’ll need three chicken breasts that have been butterflied, along with garlic salt and freshly cracked black pepper for seasoning.
Additional ingredients include six to seven slices of bacon, freshly shredded Colby Jack cheese, sliced white mushrooms, butter, the reserved bacon fat for cooking and chopped green onions for finishing the dish.

How To Make the Alice Springs Chicken Copycat RecipeStart by making the honey mustard dressing. In a bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and honey until smooth and creamy, then set it aside.

Next, cook the bacon in a large pan until crispy, reserving the bacon fat in the pan for cooking.

Season the butterflied chicken breasts on both sides with garlic salt and cracked black pepper.
In the same pan with the bacon grease, sauté the chicken over medium to medium-high heat until it develops a beautiful golden brown crust, about five minutes per side. Remove the chicken and set it aside.

Add the sliced mushrooms to the same pan along with a tablespoon of butter and sauté until they become golden and tender.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with foil and place a rack on top. Arrange the chicken on the rack and begin layering: chicken first, then a generous spoonful of the honey mustard dressing, followed by the sautéed mushrooms, two half slices of bacon and a generous handful of freshly shredded Colby Jack cheese.
Bake for about 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Finish with chopped green onions and serve with extra honey mustard sauce on the side.

Alice Springs Chicken: My Honest Thoughts on the Copycat Outback RecipeCourtesy Jeanette Donnarumma
Alice Springs Chicken still absolutely slaps. The honey mustard sauce is creamy, tangy and perfectly balanced, and once you realize that the chicken, mushrooms and everything else are cooked in bacon fat, it suddenly makes total sense why this dish is so outrageously flavorful. Every bite has that salty, savory richness layered with the sweetness of the honey mustard and the melty cheese on top.
One thing I did notice while making the recipe at home: the full 20 minutes in the oven really isn’t necessary. If you brown the chicken for about five minutes on each side in the pan, it’s already most of the way cooked. From there, you really just need about five to seven minutes in the oven to finish cooking the chicken through and melt the cheese. Leaving it in for the full 20 minutes would likely dry it out more than you’d want.
The family verdict was pretty great, too. This will for sure be a repeat dinner! My husband, Jimmy, took one bite and immediately said, “It tastes like I’m sitting in a booth at Outback! I love that you found this and we can make it at home now.” My five-year-old loved the dish as well, although he did remove the bacon from his portion (his loss). My daughter, age three, was more interested in the sautéed chicken dipped generously in the honey mustard sauce.
All in all, this copycat version totally delivered and might just save us a trip to the steakhouse next time the craving hits.

Tips & Tricks for Making Alice Springs Chicken at HomeCourtesy Jeanette Donnarumma
I don't think there was one tip or trick Melissa Jo left out of this recipe! She gave a whole list of them, so I'll share the ones I thought were the most useful.
- Melissa recommends shredding your own cheese for freshness and quality, and I agree that definitely makes a huge flavor and texture difference.
- The honey mustard dressing is the star of the dish, so feel free to adjust it to your taste by adding more honey for sweetness or extra Dijon for tang. My advice: double the recipe and enjoy with anything else you're eating this week.
- Good quality bacon also makes a difference, especially since the rendered bacon fat adds smoky flavor to both the chicken and mushrooms.
- While the classic version includes mushrooms and bacon, you can easily customize it with toppings like caramelized onions or bell peppers.
- Alice Springs Chicken pairs perfectly with steakhouse-style sides such as garlic mashed potatoes, buttered asparagus or a fresh garden salad.

Some restaurant dishes are impossible to recreate at home, but Alice Springs Chicken isn’t one of them. This version delivers the same comforting flavors that made the Outback classic famous—savory, cheesy and packed with flavor. If you’re craving the steakhouse favorite, this copycat recipe proves you don’t have to leave the house to enjoy it.

We Asked 4 Doctors What Habit Best Supports Weight Loss and Heart Health—They All Said the Same Thing
More than 40% of adults in the U.S. have obesity, which is defined as having a body mass index greater than 40. It’s important to know that obesity is not a moral failure—as Dr. Nina Radford, MD, FACC, a cardiologist at Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, tells Parade, “Obesity is a chronic, neurohormonal metabolic disease. It is not a character flaw. It is not an indicator of laziness or lack of discipline."
At the same time, it’s also important to be aware of how obesity impacts health. One of the most serious impacts of obesity is increasing the risk for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S.
“Excess body fat, especially visceral fat around the abdomen, is linked to higher blood pressure, worse cholesterol patterns, insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and a greater likelihood of type 2 diabetes. Each of those factors increases strain on the heart and blood vessels over time,” explains Dr. Alfred Hurley, MD, a cardiologist with the Center for Vein Restoration.
Obesity medicine doctor Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb, MD, adds to this, saying that excess fatty tissue also means there’s a greater likelihood that it is stored in places like the pericardium, which is the thin membrane around the heart.
Often, obesity cannot be managed through diet and lifestyle habits alone. Because of this, if you have obesity, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about the best ways to manage it, which may include prescription medication. That said, there’s one powerful habit that can support weight loss and cardiovascular health at the same time.
Related: If You're Trying to Lose Weight, There's One Thing Obesity Medicine Doctors Say You Should Never, Ever Do
We talked to four doctors specializing in weight loss and heart health about how to best lose weight and support heart health at the same time. They all had the same answer: consistent aerobic activity.
“Consistency matters far more than intensity," says Dr. Pooja Gidwani, MD, an internal medicine and obesity medicine doctor. "I often encourage patients to start with simple aerobic activities like brisk walking, incline walking, jogging, cycling or swimming, and focus on building a sustainable routine rather than pushing themselves to exhaustion."
Dr. Garcia-Webb says this too. “After listening to hundreds of patients and the difficulties that they have with exercise, what's most important is to just start by being consistent." Her advice is to pick an aerobic activity you like and commit to doing it once a week (such as every Monday).
Related: 'I'm 53, Lost Over 100 Pounds, and Am Healthier Than Ever—Here's How'
When you’re setting goals related to aerobic activity, Dr. Hurley says to make them achievable. “Starting with targets that are realistic and easy to meet helps build consistency and reinforces positive habits. In contrast, goals that are too ambitious early on often lead to missed days and discouragement,” he explains.
Dr. Radford agrees, sharing that just five minutes of aerobic activity a day can be a great starting point. “Plan to slowly build up your weekly exercise time as you are able. If you cannot exercise for 30 minutes in a row, you can exercise for ten minutes three times a day,” she says.
When it comes to the amount of aerobic activity that leads to weight loss, Dr. Radford says that many weight loss experts recommend 300 minutes of aerobic exercise a week (roughly 45 minutes a day). But again, she emphasizes that it’s much more important to set realistic goals and be consistent. Over time, you can slowly work up to 45 minutes of aerobic activity a day and remember, it doesn’t have to all be done at once.
BlessedSelections/Getty Images
Why Is Consistent Aerobic Activity So Effective for Weight Loss and Supporting Heart Health? There are several reasons why all four doctors say that consistent aerobic exercise is such a powerful habit. According to Dr. Hurley, aerobic exercise supports the heart by making the cardiovascular system more efficient. “Over time, regular aerobic activity lowers resting heart rate, helps reduce blood pressure, improves insulin sensitivity, supports healthier cholesterol levels and improves how well blood vessels dilate and respond to increased blood flow,” he explains.
On top of that, Dr. Gidwani says that consistent aerobic exercise strengthens the heart, adding that the consistency impacts health at a cellular level too by stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis, which is the process of the cells building more mitochondria.
“Healthier mitochondria allow muscles and other tissues to use oxygen and fuel more efficiently, which improves endurance and overall metabolic health,” she says.
This is all on top of aerobic exercise contributing to weight loss, which in itself is a massive win in the heart health department.

How Long Does It Take To Make an Impact?Perhaps you’re wondering how long it takes after starting to do aerobic exercise regularly for this new habit to have a noteworthy impact on your cardiovascular system. In other words, how long does it take to positively impact your heart?
Dr. Hurley says that while it can take between one and three months for consistent aerobic exercise to have a meaningful impact on blood pressure, other impacts are more immediate, such as insulin sensitivity.
Dr. Gidwani adds to this, saying, “Exercise supports heart health even before significant weight loss occurs. Many of the metabolic benefits, such as improved blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and vascular function, happen independently of changes on the scale. That’s why I encourage patients to view exercise as a way to strengthen their cardiovascular system, not just as a tool for burning calories."
The longer you are consistent with exercising regularly, the more your health will benefit. But Dr. Hurley emphasizes that exercising should be one of many healthy habits. “Aerobic exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have for cardiovascular prevention, but it works best as part of a broader strategy that also includes sleep, nutrition, blood pressure control, cholesterol management, diabetes care when relevant and smoking cessation,” he says.
Remember, you don’t have to start doing super intense, long workouts to lose weight and support your heart. Instead, set achievable habits and gradually increase your aerobic activity over time. Every step you take, your heart will benefit.

1977 Hit Ranked Among 'Best Movies of All Time'
In 1977, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope changed the landscape of Hollywood forever.
Directed by George Lucas, the film introduced audiences to a galaxy far, far away, blending science fiction, adventure and mythic storytelling in a way that felt entirely new. What began as an ambitious project quickly became a cultural phenomenon, launching one of the most successful franchises in film history.
The story follows a young farm boy, Luke Skywalker, as he becomes entangled in a battle between good and evil alongside characters like Princess Leia, Han Solo and Darth Vader. Its mix of classic hero's journey elements and groundbreaking visual effects helped it stand out from anything audiences had seen before.
Upon its release, the film became a massive box office success, eventually becoming the highest-grossing movie of its time. It also earned critical acclaim, winning multiple Academy Awards and setting a new standard for visual effects, sound design and blockbuster storytelling.
"I had a real problem because I was afraid that science-fiction buffs and everybody would say things like, 'You know there’s no sound in outer space,'" Lucas told Rolling Stonein 1977. "I just wanted to forget science. That would take care of itself. Stanley Kubrick made the ultimate science-fiction movie [with 2001: A Space Odyssey] and it is going to be very hard for somebody to come along and make a better movie, as far as I'm concerned."
Beyond its immediate success, A New Hope had a lasting impact on the industry. It ushered in the modern era of franchise filmmaking, merchandising and large-scale special effects, influencing generations of filmmakers and reshaping audience expectations.
The film's success directly led to the expansion of what would become the Star Wars franchise, with Lucas continuing the story through sequels like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, among others. Over time, the universe grew to include prequels, sequels, spin-offs and television series, turning Star Wars into a global entertainment empire that has spanned generations.
"I would feel very good if someday they colonize Mars when I am 93 years old or whatever, and the leader of the first colony says: “I really did it because I was hoping there would be a Wookiee up here," said Lucas.
Decades later, its legacy remains as strong as ever. The film continues to be ranked among the greatest movies of all time, including by Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to its enduring characters, innovative filmmaking and timeless story.
Nearly 50 years after its release, Star Wars: A New Hope is still more than just a movie, it's a cultural touchstone that forever changed the way stories are told on screen.
Taylor Swift Narrowly Misses Ex-Boyfriend at Paul McCartney Concert
Taylor Swift's weekend involved a little bit of everything—a star-studded concert, a viral moment with her fiancé, and a very deliberate exit strategy.
The pop superstar was spotted at Paul McCartney's show at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 28, where she was seen chatting with Olivia Rodrigo and other guests. Also in attendance? Ex-boyfriend John Mayer.
According to TMZ, the two were photographed mingling separately at the event, but Swift made sure to keep it that way—slipping out through a different exit than Mayer to avoid what would have been a notably awkward run-in.
The history between the two is well-known and pretty well documented. Swift, 36, and Mayer, 48, were romantically linked in 2009, when she was 19 and he was 32. After their split, Swift reportedly penned her track "Dear John" about the relationship; a song whose title alone has never exactly been subtle.
The McCartney sighting came just days after Swift had a much warmer evening out with her man. On Thursday, March 26, she hit the iHeartRadio Music Awards red carpet at the Dolby Theatre, marking her first major red carpet appearance since her engagement to Travis Kelce last year. The night turned into a full sweep, with Swift taking home Artist of the Year, Pop Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year, presented by Olympian Alysa Liu.
But it was a candid moment that had social media talking. A video circulating on X shows Swift hugging Kelce, 36, during RAYE's performance, right as the lyric "Where the hell is my husband? What is taking him so long to find me?" played out. It’s safe to say it sent fans into a frenzy.
With a wedding reportedly scheduled for June 13 at the Ocean House in Rhode Island, it seems like Swift's next chapter is very much underway.
Kim Basinger Shares Touching Memory of Working With Bruce Willis: ‘Nobody Could’ve Been a Better Partner’
Kim Basinger and Bruce Willis had a great time in the rom-com Blind Date, and the legendary actress is looking back on their time together.
After kicking off her career as a model in the ’70s, Basinger switched to acting. During the ’80s, Basinger made waves alongside Mickey Rourke in the sexy drama 9 1/2 Weeks, and skyrocketed to the top of the box office in the role of Vicki Vale in Tim Burton‘s Batman, alongside Michael Keaton. However, it was her role in 1997’s L.A. Confidential that earned her an Academy Award. But in a new Instagram post, it's her role in the 1987 flick Blind Date alongside Willis that Basinger is reflecting on.
"Nobody could’ve been a better partner than Bruce Willis for this movie… Blind date was such an opportunity for us all to work with Blake Edwards and just let it loose… And as you can see… We did just that… When Blake said go we just went… Can’t believe it’s been 39 years… So blessed… Thank you all🙏✨🩷✨🌸," Basinger reflected, sharing a hilarious scene where Willis dances like a wild man by the pool.
View this post on Instagram Kim Basinger Loves Grandma LifeWhile Basinger’s marriage and divorce from Alec Baldwin became the stuff of tabloid legend, the relationship did introduce the couple’s daughter, Ireland Baldwin, to the world. Ireland chronicles her own path through parenthood with her longtime partner, musician André Allen Anjos, on her social media account, and Basinger is occasionally featured as a loving grandma. In honor of his birthday, Baldwin shared a series of sweet photos, one of which included a rare cameo from her mother, who has chosen a quieter life these days away from the bright lights of Hollywood and social media’s prying eyes.
In the fifth photo, Basinger can be seen chatting with Anjos alongside her grandchild. Sporting black sunglasses and her trademark long, blonde hair, Basinger has barely changed a bit since her days as Vicki Vale in Batman.
“Happy birthday to my everything ♥️,” Baldwin captioned the photo carousel.

Taxi Driver, starring Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, and Jodie Foster, was king at the box office on this day in 1976. Released on Feb. 9, the neo-noir psychological drama reached No. 1 at the box office in its sixth week.
According to Variety, the film actually carved out its pinnacle week during One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest eight-week run at the top.
View this post on InstagramDirected by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader, the gritty and provocative narrative follows De Niro’s Travis Bickle, an isolated, mentally unstable veteran who takes a gig as a cabbie in New York City and slowly loses his grip on reality. Shepherd plays Betsy, a political campaign figure and Travis’ fixation, and Foster, Iris, an underage runaway prostitute (the actress worked with a child psychiatrist during production, as she was only 12 at the time).

Now, with four Oscar nominations and the top prize at the 29th Cannes International Film Festival in its arsenal, the film has been boosted with a legacy placing it at the top of the classic crime genre. Beyond the awards, the film’s backstory is just as fascinating as its accolades are imprassive.
According to Mental Floss, De Niro worked 15-hour days as a cab driver in NYC to prepare for the role. And the garbage you see piled up on the streets of Manhattan was real, as the city was suffering through a garbage strike while Scorsese was filming his movie. Oh, and the “You talkin’ to me?” line -- that was inspired by The Boss.
“Robert De Niro improvised that whole paranoid monologue,” the outlet writes, “including what would become the movie’s most famous line. De Niro got the line from Bruce Springsteen, whom he’d seen perform in Greenwich Village just days earlier, at one in a series of concerts leading up to the release of Born to Run. When the audience called out his name, The Boss did a bit where he feigned humility and said, ‘You talkin’ to me?’ Apparently it stuck in De Niro’s mind.”
In a conversation with Film Comment for the outlet’s March/April 1976 issue, Schrader said, “The bit that’s not in the script, the only thing, is De Niro’s dialogue, ‘Who you looking at? You looking at me? You’re a f—!’ To me, it’s the best thing in the movie. And I didn’t write it.”
Another point of interest is the topline crew. With his script being shopped around, Schrader had two heavyweights who were not Scorsese and De Niro on the hook, but just didn’t feel like they were right.
“We were talking about doing Taxi Driver with Robert Mulligan [Summer of ’41] and Jeff Bridges [The Last Picture Show],” Schrader told the magazine. “I was fighting that off because it didn't make any sense to me. … I saw Mean Streets and said, ‘That's it. DeNiro and Scorsese.’”
De Niro and Scorsese went on to make another eight films together. Starting around 2002 with Gangs of New York, Scorsese began regularly working withLeonardo DiCaprio, now 51, in his films. When asked about his favorite Scorsese film, the Departed star said Taxi Driver.
“The one that really moved me the most was Taxi Driver,” DiCaprio told Charlie Rose in a December 2013 interview that included Scorsese sitting across the table from him. “I remember watching it at 15 years old, and being transfixed with Travis Bickle, because I was locked in to this character and I felt such incredible empathy. I understood him. I understood his loneliness. And then he deceived me.”
Scorsese followed the praise by hailing Schrader, his script, and the effort the screenwriter went to to get the movie made with the best cast and crew.
“Scrader is extraordinary,” Scorsese says. “Paul went through a lot on that one. Brian DePalma gave me the script. He said, ‘You’ve gotta read this thing.’ It was amazing.”
DiCaprio added, “To me, it’s the greatest independent film ever made.”
Taxi Driver is available to rent or buy on Prime Video.

Rob and Michele Reiner Honored at Human Rights Campaign Gala
Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner were remembered at the Human Rights Campaign gala dinner in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 28.
Kelly Robinson, the president of the LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, praised the couple for their efforts in the fight to legalize same-sex marriage in the United States.
"When Prop 8 passed in 2008, Rob and Michele stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a real-life league of queer Avengers,” she said.
Robinson continued, “And from that moment when they locked arms, they decided to launch the American Foundation for Equal Rights and that legal team took the fight all the way to the Supreme Court and won for our rights and for our lives."
Robinson described the Reiners as "superheroes" and that they "showed us what real allyship is."
"They were courage embodied and most importantly, they never stopped giving a damn – not for themselves or for self-image but for the good of all of us," she added.
The Human Rights Campaign gala chairman, Todd Hawkins, also dedicated the night to the late couple.
"They helped make it possible for LGBTQ+ people to marry the person they love,” Hawkins said at the beginning of the night, “I remember looking out from this very stage last year. Rob and Michele were right there cheering us on with everything that they had. We may have lost them in the physical sense, but we have never lost their spirit, their fire, their fight, their energy, their friendship, their influence and their everlasting impact. So tonight, we dedicate this evening to them. We remember them, we honor them."
Rob Reiner was also recently memorialized during the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15, where former stars of his iconic films reunited to honor his legacy.

1959 Marilyn Monroe Classic Premiered at This Historic Theater 67 Years Ago Today
It's hard to go a whole conversation about Hollywood royalty over the generations without touching on Marilyn Monroe.
Perhaps the finest film she graced was Some Like It Hot, which is celebrating a joyous milestone on Sunday, March 29. Exactly 67 years ago, the Oscar-winning movie premiered in New York City, at Loew's newly renovated State Theatre — from then on becoming known as the Capitol Theatre.
Monroe, who died in 1962 at age 36, arrived at the Manhattan premiere on Broadway with her husband, playwright Arthur Miller.
Billy Wilder's renowned crime comedy film also starred Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, and ultimately received six Oscar nominations, with its sole win going to costume designer Orry-Kelly. In 1989, the Library of Congress selected it as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Here's the film's synopsis, per Rotten Tomatoes: After witnessing a Mafia murder, slick saxophone player Joe (Curtis) and his long-suffering buddy, Jerry (Lemmon), improvise a quick plan to escape from Chicago with their lives. Disguising themselves as women, they join an all-female jazz band and hop a train bound for sunny Florida. While Joe pretends to be a millionaire to win the band's sexy singer, Sugar (Monroe), Jerry finds himself pursued by a real millionaire (Joe E. Brown) as things heat up and the mobsters close in.
In other Monroe news, her former Palm Springs home officially hit the market last month for $3.3 million, offering buyers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Hollywood history in the California desert. Tucked within the celebrity-favored neighborhood of Vista Las Palmas in Palm Springs, the midcentury-modern residence reflects the glamour and escapism that defined Monroe’s era.
Though Monroe owned several properties throughout her lifetime, her Palm Springs retreat — often referred to as the “Marilyn Monroe Doll House” — has long captured the imagination of fans.

Noah Wyle's Daughter Made Him a Tin Foil Golden Globe in Case He Lost
Noah Wyle's 10-year-old daughter Shay had a contingency plan for awards season. In case her father came home empty-handed from the Golden Globes, she built him a replacement trophy out of tin foil and chopsticks.
'She fabricated a golden globe in the event that I lost,' Wyle told hosts on a recent appearance on This Morning. 'To make me feel better, she made one out of tin foil and chopsticks, and got the proportions right.'
He didn't need it. The Pitt, the HBO Max medical drama Wyle stars in and co-produces, won Best Television Series, Drama at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards and took five prizes at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor. The tin foil version remains a keepsake.
The wins cap a creative stretch Wyle, now 54, describes as the most satisfying of his career. 'I've never felt this creatively satisfied,' he said. 'To have it come at 54 years of age has been incredibly humbling.'
The Pitt premiered on HBO Max on January 9, 2025. The show follows Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, a veteran ER attending physician navigating a single 15-hour shift, with each of its 15 episodes covering one consecutive hour of that shift in real time. Wyle describes his character as a man who worked through the pandemic without ever processing it. 'He's a drowning man that doesn't know he's drowning,' he said, 'and this shift is going to trigger him in the worst way.'
Related: Noah Wyle Has One Rule for ‘The Pitt’s Guest Stars — And It Might Surprise You (Exclusive)
The structural format required the writers' room to map all character arcs and medical cases across all 15 episodes before scripting began. Continuity on set is managed by two dedicated script supervisors, one tracking the physical environment, one monitoring hair and makeup, to maintain consistency across what is, on screen, an unbroken day.
Wyle and the creative team, which includes ER executive producer John Wells, were deliberate about revisiting medical drama territory. 'All we really risked was damaging the legacy we've already established,' Wyle said. The decision to move forward came down to a story they believed needed telling. Specifically, the toll the pandemic took on frontline healthcare workers. On the aggregate math alone, Wyle noted, ER physicians currently treat four patients per hour across a 12-hour shift. 'That's four people's worst day,' he said. 'An hour. For 12 hours.'
His mother, a retired nurse, has long served as an unofficial technical consultant, whether he wanted one or not. She called every Thursday at 11:01 p.m. after ER aired to critique his medical accuracy. 'Now, thanks to the internet,' Wyle said, 'I've got a million mothers.'
The Pitt has been renewed for a third season. Season 2 premiered January 8, 2026. Both seasons are streaming on HBO Max.
Iconic '90s Actor With Major Emmy Award Turns 71
Beloved Irish actor Brendan Gleeson turned 71 on Sunday.
Known for his commanding on-screen presence, Gleeson has spent decades building one of the most respected careers in film and television.
Born in Dublin, Ireland on March 29, 1955, Gleeson didn't begin his acting career right away. He initially worked as a schoolteacher before transitioning into acting, performing with local theater groups and gradually building his reputation on stage before moving into film.
Over the years, Gleeson has become known for his ability to bring depth and complexity to a wide range of roles, from historical figures to darkly comedic characters. He appeared the role of the beloved Mad-Eye Moody in the Harry Potter film series, which made him instantly recognizable when out and about in public.
"It's difficult to browse in a shop. It's a big price to pay and I don’t like it," Gleeson told The Guardian. As it turns out, Gleeson revels observing the world around him instead of being the subject of observation. Perhaps it's part of his ability to take on so many different types of roles. But, fame has changed that for him. "It's stopped me from being able to people-watch with any great success and comfort. And that's part of what you really need to do to stay aware of what's going on."
Beyond the popular film franchise, Gleeson has starred in films like Braveheart, Gangs of New York and In Bruges, and has become known for his consistently dynamic and lived-in performances.
One of his most acclaimed performances came in the HBO film Into the Storm, in which he portrayed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. His powerful performance earned him a win at the Primetime Emmy Awards, solidifying his reputation as a standout actor.
"He's such a complex individual," Gleeson said of Churchill in a 2009 interview. "His resilience and self-belief and facing down a situation so much greater than he was at the time—his ability to make people realize they were more than they thought they were."
In more recent years, Gleeson has continued to earn critical praise, particularly for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, which brought him renewed attention and award nominations. He has also remained active in television and film, taking on projects that highlight both his dramatic range and his ability to bring depth to complex characters.
At 71, Brendan Gleeson's career continues to evolve, with each role reinforcing his reputation as one of the most versatile and compelling actors working today.

Martha Stewart Shares Her Ideal Man Checklist—Right Down to His Yacht
Lifestyle mega-mogul Martha Stewart, 84, has never been one to beat around the bush about what she likes or doesn't like. She made many things very clear in her candid, unapologetic 2024 Netflix documentary—from how to choose the right knife to cut oranges and how she approached her early marriage to ex-husband Andrew Stewart to what she expected from boyfriends after that. Currently, Martha says she's a single woman, but she's not shy if you ask her what makes the perfect man.
Stewart recently shared her checklist for the ideal man in an interview with People. She didn't call it a checklist exactly. We're just calling it a checklist because we've been paying to attention to the queen of organization all these years. After all, Martha Stewart teaches us to have a checklist for everything—and it's a lifesaver!
The desired traits Martha Stewart says she likes in her ideal man include the following:
- Looks: "Nice-looking"
- Hairline: "Bald or not bald—I don't care. If they have a nice-shaped head ..."
- Smile: "Nice teeth and a nice smile"
- Intelligence: "Smart"
- Sense of humor: "Funny"
- Wealth: "Rich helps"
- Plane: "Very nice"
- Yacht: "I love yachts"
This is a very spectacular checklist.
It's funny. Some might guess that money and wealth wouldn't matter as much when you're a self-made, lifestyle entrepreneur and already a millionaire in your own right, but it does. I mean, what badass, self-supporting single woman in her 80s (or any age really!) is ready to start taking care of some unmotivated dude who sits around on the couch playing video games all day. Not Martha, people, definitely not Martha.
Martha Stewart is currently starring in the spring campaign for the denim brand Mother, and, in early March, she opened her second restaurant, the Bedford by Martha Stewart at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.
