Pop-synth legend Marc Almond is celebrating his 69th birthday today.

Peter Mark Almond — known professionally as Marc Almond — was born on July 9, 1957, in the seaside town of Southport, in Northwest England. He is one of the original founding members of Soft Cell, alongside the late Dave Ball. The duo rose to fame in the early '80s following the release of the massive debut single, a version of Motown artistGloria Jones' "Tainted Love," which defined a new era of music and became one of the most beloved tracks of the decade.

"Tainted Love" shot to the top of the charts in numerous countries, including the Official UK Singles Chart and the Australian Kent Music Report chart. The song also bagged the prestigious Single of the Year award at the 1982 BRIT Awards. However, Almond wasn't the track's biggest fan upon its initial release.

"It fills me with humility I suppose," the singer explained to Virgin Radio in 2023. “I didn’t like the song for a while as in some ways, I thought Soft Cell were more than just that one song, and of course we are. Over time, I came to realize that one song has made so much possible for us both — it changed everything irreversibly and for that I will always be grateful and lucky. I was lucky — never underestimate luck."

In June 2026, Almond announced Soft Cell's sixth and final studio album, Danceteria, which wrapped up recording just two days before Ball's death. The 12-track record is set for release on Sept. 25, 2026.

“Danceteria is a love letter to New York in the early ’80s. The time we spent in New York — where we recorded our first three albums — shaped us both as artists and people,” the singer explained in a statement. “To celebrate this period is a fitting farewell to Dave Ball and the final Soft Cell studio album.”

Now that she has a gold medal, Amber Glenn may have her sights on a Dancing With the Stars Mirrorball.

Speaking on the latest podcast episode of House of Maher, hosted byDWTS alum and fellow Olympian Ilona Maher, and her sisters, the group got to chatting about appearing reality TV shows.

"I would love to do Dancing With the Stars. Oh my God, it's been a dream of mine since I saw Meryl do it in 2014," the Olympic skater said, referring to Olympic champion Meryl Davis who took home the Mirrorball for Season 18.

"I could talk to you all day about what your experience was, but like about the sets, the music, the makeup, the costumes," she said to Maher, who competed on DWTS in 2024.

"I just have so much respect for it, and it's so beautiful," she continued. "I'll listen to songs, and I'll just see it in my head. Like 'This would be perfect for that,' and 'This would be perfect for this.'"

Glenn, 26, took home a gold medal with Team USA at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Games this year. Her routine to Madonna's "Like a Prayer" particularly made waves as the Queen of Pop herself reached out to the skater to praise her performance.

If she were to trade her skates in for dance shoes, she said she'd "possibly" like to be paired with Alan Bersten, Maher's former partner, or "maybe Ezra [Sosa]."

"You'd have a lot of fun with Ezra, Pasha [Pashkov]'s also, like hilarious," Maher added.

Glenn also wasn't opposed to being partnered with a female pro, like how Jojo Siwa was paired with Jenna Johnsonin 2021.

"On the ice, I lift the other girls all the time," she said. "It's a lot of fun. Usually when I do paired up things, I am the lead partner."

Along with Davis and Maher, the skating star would be among many Olympians, including gymnasts Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez, and Shawn Johnson, to participate in the ballroom dance competition show.

Most recently Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles competed on Season 35. She was partnered with Sosa, and the two made it to the finals.

The reason beloved actor John Goodman no longer fires up his grill may be a bit of a surprise. However, it's integral to his health and well-being.

Goodman, 74, is best known for her role as Dan Conner in the legendary ABCsitcomRoseanne, in which he played a working-class dad opposite Roseanne Barr. He also left his mark on the film world in several Coen Brothers productions, including Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?. In recent years, he reprised his role as Conner in The Conners, but the series failed to find the same following that Roseanne did. However, he did find an entirely new generation of followers thanks to his hilarious performance on The Righteous Gemstones.

But the talented star, who recently dropped 200 pounds, revealed in a new video that he quit his hobby of grilling because it contributed to his issues with alcohol.

“I don’t grill anymore because I don’t drink anymore, and that was a good excuse to get drunk and stand in front of something hot,” Goodman shared in a July 8 Instagram video for Simpson’s in the Strand, a London restaurant that's owned by his friend Jeremy King.

What Kicked Off John Goodman’s Weight Loss Journey?

While Goodman’s weight loss may feel sudden, his journey actually began back in 2007. In fact, AARP pointed out that the beloved actor has dropped a total of 200 pounds. So what kicked off his decision to make some serious changes to his health?

“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself,” Goodman told ABC News in 2016. “You’re shaving in the mirror, and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.”

When it comes to his favorite methods of working out, Goodman told AARP that he enjoys “getting out and walking the dogs” and “boxing.”

How Freddy's Fares Against In-N-Out

We all know any ol' burger won't cut it. In-N-Out has long been famed for its seemingly identical bite no matter which location you visit, whether it's a Double-Double or a secret menu hack.

Freddy's, on the other hand, has more in common with Steak 'n Shake, serving thin-smashed steakburger patties, classic diner-style frozen custard, and an array of salty sides instead of the one thing In-N-Outers most often complain about: stale fries.

While In-N-Out's pink lemonade has become something of a legend, Freddy's is giving customers another reason to skip the soda fountain with the recent launch of Bevies — 5 Custard Cream Soda flavors, each topped with Freddy's signature custard cream.

While Peter Gabriel is known as the lead singer of Genesis, he also released his own tracks like "Don't Give Up" that would become a classic duet featuring pop icon Kate Bush.

"Don't Give Up" wasn't a chart-topper by any means, as it landed at No. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100. It had a better run in the UK, where it landed at No. 9 on the singles chart. What captured interest about the track was its overall message of hope and the combination of Gabriel's "mournful" vocals with Bush's breaking through the gloom. Elton John would even credit the track in a 2014 interview as having helped with his journey to sobriety, and it was played at Matthew Perry's funeral in 2023.

It's no surprise that "Don't Give Up" has emotional weight behind its lyrics due to the multiple sources of inspiration. In an interview with Reverb, Gabriel explained having seen Depression-era photos by photographer Dorothea Lange. The photos impacted the singer as they showed a poverty-stricken America.

"I was looking at some photos by Dorothea Lange—she's a great photographer. She had these classic pictures from the dust bowl Depression in America, and there was one called In This Proud Land, although I haven't been able to find it since. [He may have seen the '70s book titled In This Proud Land that includes Lange photos.] I used that for the first line in the song," said Gabriel.

The lyrics to "Don't Give Up" tell an emotional story of a man whose unemployment causes him stress in his relationship. The man feels isolation, loneliness, and despair, while the woman offers him encouragement and a sense of hope.

"I'd also seen a TV programme about the effect of unemployment on family life, so that played into my own problems at that time. I think a combination of that and domestic difficulties," he explained.

Gabriel's former wife, Jill, would also explain that the singer would get into "very deep depressions," and the song's title is something she'd always tell him. When it comes to the track's response among fans, Gabriel says that many have told him it came at a "very good time in their life." He even brings up a certain Friends star and its impact.

"It's fantastic that, a great feeling. This person, let's say, "a well-known American comedian," was very depressed. I was a great admirer of his, and he said, "This song saved my life." Totally unexpected," he said.

When it comes to the song as a duet, it was originally intended as a solo, but realized that the dynamic would work better between a man and a woman. Bush's part was meant for Dolly Parton, but she turned it down and was happy she did. Gabriel admits that "obviously a lot of the power of the song came from the way that Kate sings it."

A decade ago, a group of unknown kids on bikes pedaled straight into television history. On Wednesday, the Emmys let them ride off without so much as a wave goodbye. No member of the Stranger Things cast earned a nomination for the show's fifth and final season, a shutout that left one of Netflix's defining ensembles empty-handed at its last chance for recognition.

The omission stung more because the series was not ignored entirely. Variety reports the final season earned recognition in technical categories while the grown-up young stars who carried the show came away with nothing, listing the snub among the morning's most shocking alongside Sydney Sweeney. TV Insider echoed the point, noting the acting fields shut the core cast out entirely despite the technical support.

That means no farewell recognition for Winona Ryder, Harbour, Brown or any of the young stars who anchored Hawkins since 2016, including Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp and Sadie Sink. It also caps a strange awards journey for a series that was once nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and helped define Netflix's rise as an Emmy player.

The result marks a steep fall for a show that once made ongoing awards feel inevitable. David Harbour earned two Emmy nominations for playing Jim Hopper in earlier seasons, and Millie Bobby Brown collected two of her own as Eleven, back when the series was a fixture in the drama race. Some had even entered the conversation elsewhere, with Sink earning a Tony nomination for her Broadway work last year. By the time the final chapter rolled out between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve, with a finale that even played in theaters, the cast had grown up on screen in front of a global audience.

Several factors likely worked against the farewell run. The final episodes premiered back in late 2025, months before nomination voting, and the season divided its own fandom, with online debate over the writing and the ending stretching well into the new year. Meanwhile, the drama categories overflowed with fresher contenders, as The Pitt piled up 25 nominations and newcomers like Pluribusand Widow's Bay crowded the field, according to reports. The streamer's onetime flagship was left watching from the sidelines as newer shows soaked up the drama field's attention.

The cast will be fine, snub or no snub. Brown and Harbour have already announced a reunion in an untitled A24 spy drama for Netflix, an animated spinoff set in 1985 arrived this spring, and nearly every young star has a full slate ahead. For the fans who spent ten years in Hawkins, though, Wednesday's announcement must feel a little like the letdown some got from the end of the series itself.

Audioslave, fronted by the late Chris Cornell, was ranked among the "greatest supergroups" of all time.

Formed by highly influential musicians from Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine, lead guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk joined Cornell to create one of the most celebrated rock bands of the 2000s.

In a list unveiled by Collider, the publication ranked the top 10 most successful supergroups in rock history that shaped music with their legendary status.

With The Traveling Wilburys, Cream, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Bad Company dominating the top spots, Audioslave secured the No. 5 spot with its unique mix of '90s grunge and '70s hard rock riffs blended with alternative metal rhythms.

Further strengthening the band's appeal, Cornell's powerful and soaring voice instantly became Audioslave's defining strength.

Formed in 2001, at a time when pop music dominated the charts, Rage Against the Machine was left without a vocalist following the departure of Zack de la Rocha.

This major shakeup left the remaining members looking for a new lead vocalist who had a completely different sound from the previous one.

This is where Cornell, a rock icon from Soundgarden, entered the picture after legendary music producer Rick Rubin suggested that Morello and the other members meet the vocalist, who at the time was working on his solo career.

Fast forward to 2002 when the band released its self-titled debut album, which featured the hit track "Like a Stone."

The single hit No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay and Mainstream Rock Airplay charts while peaking at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Three years later, the supergroup released its sophomore album, Out of Exile, which became its first album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, thanks to the hit singles "Be Yourself" and "Doesn't Remind Me."

In 2006, the band released its third and final album, Revelations. Unlike its previous records, the album received less mainstream attention.

Months after the album’s release, Audioslave disbanded after Cornell announced his departure from the band because of "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences."

The late vocalist revealed that it was something that he "doesn't want to do anymore" and wanted to shift his focus to his solo music career.

“There were problems from the very beginning and we dealt with them in a great way,” he told Billboard. “We made three great records. We were a band that got along great, but we’ve also had our differences. My focus is definitely on doing my own music now.

The legendary singer continued his solo career and also reunited with Soundgarden in 2010, taking on several musical projects in the years that followed.

However, after a decade of continued success as a solo artist and with other musical projects, Cornell died in 2017 at the age of 52.

Updates continue to pour in surrounding the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding.

It's been described as an American version of a Royal Wedding, per The New York Times, and countless big names attended the July 3 ceremony.

“The reason Jaime chose Taylor as Leo Thames’s godmother is because they both believe that being a godmother is a deeply personal and spiritual commitment that has nothing to do with public appearances,” King’s publicist Jane Owen told Page Six in an article published Wednesday, July 8.

Owen continued, "Leo Thames is still too young for a large adult wedding celebration, but he and his mother were able to joyfully celebrate Taylor and Kelce’s marriage in his own very special, age-appropriate way during his summer break."

The statement came one day after Page Six also reported that none of Swift’s five godchildren attended the singer’s wedding festivities with Kelce. Sources also said the daughters of the Travis' brother Jason Kelce were the only children who served as flower girls during the ceremony.

When the Bee Gees were putting together the historic soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever, they penned a brilliant piece of disco magic that was destined to become an instant classic. Yet, in a fascinating twist of music history, the legendary brothers never actually released their own studio recording of "More Than a Woman" as a commercial single in the United States.

Instead, that opportunity landed with R&B group Tavares, who took the track, infused it with their own signature sound, and breathed entirely new life into the melody. Their brilliant reimagining completely dominated the airwaves.

Both versions shared a spot on the multi-platinum 1977 Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album. However, it was Tavares’ version that climbed the Billboard charts, peaking at No. 32, and earned them a Grammy win in the category of Album of the Year.

The Bee Gees never actually pushed their version of the song as a commercial single in the US, despite writing it for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. However, both versions are heard in the film.

“More Than a Woman" was co-written by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The song was featured during two titular scenes in the film between Tony Manero (John Travolta) and Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney).

According to U Discover Music, “'More Than a Woman' had also been given to an R&B/funk group called Tavares, so the Bee Gees version was left unfinished. The film studio then decided that both versions of “More Than a Woman” would appear on the soundtrack album, so in September 1977, the Bee Gees hastily put the finishing touches on their song at Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, before mixing it."

The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack was released in November 1977 and became one of the best-selling albums in history. According to the Library of Congress, the LP "sold 25 million copies between 1977 and 1980, which at that time was the most copies sold of any sound recording since sound recording began. So far, it’s sold over 40 million copies."

Additionally, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack stayed in the Top 200 from November 1977 to March 1980 for 29 consecutive months. Its historic, multi-year grip on the charts shattered industry records and permanently cemented the album's status as the definitive soundtrack of the era.

On TikTok Trends, "More Than a Woman" continues its streak in popularity, gaining new listeners with every viral video it inspires. Decades after dominating the dance floor, the track proves it still has staying power 49 years later.

It's an easy mistake to make believing that all hit songs come fully formed from the get-go, spewing from the artist's guitar or drum set as easily as someone whistling "Happy Birthday."

But in reality, great songs take time to mature and form, with musicians typically laboring over them for months, if not years.

As a perfect illustration of this point, Keith Richards recently revealed that it took about 10 years to complete the Rolling Stones' now iconic 1981 track, "Start Me Up," with the song undergoing a decade's worth of tweaks and revisions.

Speaking with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the 82-year-old Richards spoke on a variety of topics, including the Stones' new song, "Some Us," which the musician said had been forming in his mind for quite some time.

“That song had been hanging around in the head for years and years. I never quite got around to putting the finger on it,” Richards said. “Some songs are very elusive.”

As an example, Richards then went on to cite "Start Me Up" as a notably frustrating creative endeavor, one that took about 10 years of continuous work until it saw the light of day.

“I remember ‘Start Me Up’ was 10 years from the writing of it to when it came out,” he started by saying.

“It’s like wine, good wine, some of it’s better aged,” the artist continued. “I remember the first hundred takes were reggae rhythm. It went through a lot of styles before we said, ‘Hey, why don’t we just play rock and roll?’”

“That’s the one that made it,” he concluded.

Released on the Rolling Stones' sixteenth album Tattoo You, "Start Me Up" quickly reached number 1 on Australia, Canada, Spain and U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. In addition to reaching number 7 on the U.K. singles chart, the song climbed to the number 2 position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The belief that getting older means becoming fragile and weak isn’t just outdated—it flat-out isn’t true. While it does take conscious effort to maintain muscle mass and bone density as we age, it’s absolutely possible to become stronger with age, not weaker. 

Many people in their 70s, 80s and beyond have shared with Parade the workout routines that have made them stronger than ever before. Strength is important for staying independent and moving through everyday life with ease, and that includes core strength. 

“Your core is a group of muscles that wrap around your trunk like a natural support system. Together, they stabilize your spine, support your pelvis, help you maintain good posture and transfer force between your upper and lower body whenever you move,” explains Heike Yates ACE, a Pilates and strength coach, and host of the "Pursue Your Spark" podcast. 

Portia Page, ACE, NASM, AFAA, a personal trainer, Pilates instructor and Balanced Body educator, says that one of the biggest misconceptions is that the core is simply the abs or six-pack. “In reality, your core is a 360-degree system that includes the abdominals as well as the back extensor muscles, diaphragm, pelvic floor and deep stabilizing muscles surrounding the spine."

Page tells Parade that as we age, a strong, responsive core helps to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls by keeping the body's center of gravity aligned and making everyday movements easier. 

If you’re 50 or older, one way you can know if you have a strong core is by seeing how long you can hold a bridge.

“Holding a bridge isn't just a fitness milestone—it's a meaningful snapshot of how well your body is working together," she explains. "Especially after age 50, I often think of a bridge as less of a ‘glute or butt exercise’ and more of a conversation between the feet, legs, hips, abs, back and even the shoulders and arms. When all of these systems communicate well, the body becomes more resilient in everyday life."

How To Know if You Have a Strong Core After 50

There are a few key ways to assess your core strength. Allison Goldsmith, CPT, a personal trainer and an older adult fitness specialist, says that if you can maintain proper posture for a prolonged amount of time (both while you’re standing and while you’re sitting down), that’s a good sign.

If you have low back pain, Goldsmith says this is an indicator of poor core strength. If you tend to fall or trip a lot, that's another indicator that your core strength could use some attention because maintaining good balance requires core strength. 

“One of my favorite assessments is simply watching someone perform a bridge,” Page says, explaining that a strong core isn't measured by how high you lift your hips. What’s more important, she reveals, is whether you can lift and lower your hips with control, maintain steady breathing that isn’t labored, keep the hips relatively level and avoid rounding in the lower back.

Here’s How Long You Should Be Able To Hold a Bridge After 50

Page explains that how long you can hold a bridge pose is another key indicator of core strength, sharing, “If you can comfortably hold a bridge for 20 to 30 seconds while breathing normally and maintaining good alignment, that's often a sign of good functional core endurance."

How Bridge Pose Supports Core Strength

Yates explains that holding a bridge pose requires core strength because it uses the deep abdominal muscles to support the body. She adds that these muscles help stabilize the pelvis, keep the spine aligned and prevent the lower back from having to do more work than it should. At the same time, the glutes, hamstrings and the muscles along the spine work together with the core to create a strong, stable foundation. 

“That's why the bridge isn't just an exercise for your abs; it's a full-body movement that teaches your body to work as a team," she says. "For adults over 50, core strength isn’t about holding the bridge for the longest time. It’s about whether the core is doing its job in everyday life."

And unlike crunches, which focus on repeatedly flexing the spine, the bridge teaches the core to do what it does every day: provide stability while you move. “That's why it's such a functional exercise for everyday activities like lifting, carrying and walking,” Yates tells Parade.

She explains that during the bridge pose, the core muscles work to stabilize the spine and pelvis throughout the movement. Rather than working in isolation, the abdominals coordinate with the glutes, hamstrings and back muscles to keep the body aligned and prevent the lower back from taking over. 

Want to give bridge pose a try? Here’s how to safely do it, according to Goldsmith:

1. Lie on your back in a safe and clear space.
2. Relax your head, neck and shoulders while keeping your knees bent and feet flat. 
3. Lift your hips off the floor while keeping the hips aligned. Your knees will track toward your toes. Try to hold the bridge for 30 seconds before slowly lowering the body down to the floor and coming out of the pose. 

“Even if you lift your glutes off the floor just an inch, you’re still doing it,” Goldsmith says.

How To Work up To Doing Bridge Pose

If holding a bridge pose is not accessible to you right now, that’s okay! All three trainers say that you can work up to it. To do this, Yates and Page both recommend lifting the body off the floor and holding for just a few seconds, and increasing the duration and height over time. “Build consistency by practicing several times each week,” Page says.

If bridge pose just isn’t for you, rest assured that there are plenty of other ways to strengthen your core. Page tells Parade that regularly doing Pilates is particularly effective for this because it trains the core to support movement rather than isolate muscles.

According to Page, plank exercises, dead bug and walking with good posture with the arms swinging are all ways to increase core strength when done regularly.

Yates adds to this, sharing that single-leg standing exercises are also great for building core strength. “For adults over 50, learning how to lift, carry, reach and rotate the body correctly strengthens the core by teaching the body how to function during real-life activities,” she notes.

“After 50—or 60, 70 or even 80—fitness should become less about proving what you can do and more about preserving what allows you to live well,” Page explains. “For me, the bridge is a beautiful reminder that healthy aging isn't measured by how much weight you lift or how many crunches you can perform. It's measured by how well your body works as a coordinated whole.” 

She adds that if you can lift into a bridge with control, breathe comfortably and lower with the same precision, you've demonstrated something far more valuable than abdominal strength alone. “You've demonstrated functional movement, coordination and resilience, qualities that support independence and confidence for decades to come,” she says. Now that’s aging gracefully.

Lindsey Vonn says she's finally reached a milestone she wasn't sure would ever come, but she knows the journey is far from over.

The Olympic skiing legend shared a new video on Wednesday, July 8, documenting her recovery, showing herself powering through strength exercises in the gym as she continues rehabilitating the devastating leg injury she suffered during the 2026 Winter Olympics.

"I knew one day I’d get here, just didn’t know how long it would take me…" Vonn wrote in the Instagram caption. "It took 5 months, but I’m finally here! Still a very long road ahead but my strength is coming back 💪🏻 (maybe more mentally than physically still but that’s not a bad thing ;)."

The clip captures Vonn performing a series of demanding rehabilitation exercises, including weighted squats and strength training as she gradually rebuilds the leg she nearly lost. And fans were sure to chime in to cheer the athlete along.

“Thank you for sharing your journey ❤️. You’ve been a real source of inspiration and a role model for me during this difficult time. ,” said one fan who was going through an injury of their own.

“Never doubted you'd come back. You are a great inspiration to others,” said another.

A third wrote, “Love my Lindsey, she s my mental strength hero.”

Vonn's latest update was quite the shift from the emotional place she found herself in just months ago. Following her horrific crash during the women's downhill event at the 2026 Winter Olympics on February 8, the 41-year-old got honest about the psychological toll of her recovery.

"My physical battle began the second I got hurt but the mental battle started today," she wrote in a post on X. "It hit me like a ton of bricks. It’s a battle I’m used to because I’ve done it so many times. I have always learned from every injury. Each one has made me a better and stronger person in different ways…but the battle of the mind can be dark and hard and unrelenting."

Still, even then, Vonn made it clear she wasn't giving up. "Someone I care about said I am a 'master at the psychological game of life,'" she wrote. "I don’t know if that’s true….I do know hard days are coming but I will find a way back to the top of the mountain of life."

The injury itself was even more severe than many fans realized. Vonn later revealed she underwent five surgeries after sustaining a complex tibia fracture, and credited orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett with saving her leg from amputation.

Tom Hanks is celebrating a major birthday milestone. The Forrest Gump actor turned 70 on July 9th! 

Born in Concord, California, on July 9, 1956, Hanks attended California State University, majoring in theater. "What do you mean he escaped Chernobyl ... what!" one Redditor said, starting a thread.

Farber, who has been a longtime fan favorite on Dancing With the Stars, was born in the former Soviet Union. His family emigrated to Australia following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and Farber has previously spoken about fleeing the region as a young child before eventually discovering ballroom dance.

"I remember reading about this last year in an article about Burn the Floor tour," another Redditor chimed in.

"It mentioned some info about the Russian immigrant dancers on the tour (Maks was brought up too), and about Sasha's background. His family lived quite close to Chernobyl so they packed up and fled to Australia. Sasha was about 4 or 5 so he would have been quite young."

"Sasha has previously given interviews where he’s described his family loading their car on the day of the disaster and driving as far away from Chernobyl as they could," another elaborated. Every great musician has a backstory of how they got to the main stage of their music careers, with Elvis Costello having quit his computer job in 1977 to follow his dreams.

The Grammy Award-winning rock icon was born Declan Patrick MacManus into a musical family in 1954. What sparked his love for music was none other than his father, Ross MacManus, a professional trumpet player and jazz musician. Beginning his career in the late 1940s, he played with some of the most respected bands in Liverpool and London. By the time Costello was born, his father was well-known in the music industry.

It just so happens that Costello's musical roots ran deep, with his grandfather, Patrick Matthew McManus, having also been a professional musician. Costello was inspired by his history of playing trumpet in the army, in music halls, and in theater showings of silent films. Not to mention that his mother, Lillian MacManus, sold records throughout the 60s.

Despite having music in his blood, Costello didn't pursue it outright as a career. The music industry has its downsides and pitfalls, all of which Costello was well aware of due to his upbringing and made him hesitant to pursue the same path. Elvis Costello needed a job to pursue music

Instead of jumping headfirst into a music career, Costello knew he needed a decent-paying job to survive. When he graduated from secondary school in 1973, England was going through one of their worst years of unemployment.

"I was very lucky to get a job. I had no ambition to go into further education; I just went out and got the first job I could get. I went along to be a chart corrector, tea boy, clerk — because I wasn’t really qualified for anything. I got a job as a computer operator, which happened to be comparatively well paid: about twenty pounds a week. I’d just put tapes on the machines and feed cards in, line up printing machines — all the manual work the computer itself doesn’t have arms to do," he told Rolling Stone.

His job involved frequent periods of waiting for the mainframe computers to finish their tasks, which gave Costello enough time to write songs. According to Costello, he "stuck out the first computer job for about six months" while working with a folk group in Liverpool and would soon meet musician and producer Nick Lowe.

"When we’ve worked together, it’s been, “I can’t see what’s so difficult about it, it’s just four chords” – and he’d bang them out. He always had that attitude — it was quite a revelation to me," he said.

According to OnThisDayinMusic, Costello quit his computer programming job on July 9, 1977, to become a full-time musician. He released his debut album, My Aim Is True, days later, on July 22. Produced by Lowe, the album was created while Costello was working his computer job. The album and singles like "Alison" and "Less Than Zero" would introduce the musician as a leading artist of the punk rock era.
