In February 2026, a single Pokémon card sold for $16.492 million. The Pokémon Trading Card Game turns 30 this year, and the anniversary lands right in the middle of the biggest collecting boom the hobby has ever seen.

A Record-Breaking Year for a Childhood Card Game

The crown jewel is the Pikachu Illustrator, a 1998 Japanese promo handed out to winners of a CoroCoro Comic art contest. Just 39 official copies exist, and only one ever earned a perfect PSA 10 grade. Influencer and boxer Logan Paul bought that card in July 2021 for $5.275 million, then sold it in February 2026 for $16.492 million. Guinness World Records certified it as the most valuable trading card on the planet.

It was not the only jaw-dropper. A rare Japanese Base Set Charizard, long the most coveted card in the hobby, cleared $1.7 million in March. The cardboard monsters a lot of us once traded at recess now move like fine art.

Pokémon's 30th Anniversary Plans

The Pokémon Company is leaning all the way in. Its 30th Celebration expansion arrives worldwide on September 16, the first time a Pokémon TCG set has launched simultaneously across the globe. Every booster pack includes one of 30 different Pikachu foil cards, each drawn by a separate artist. A Pokémon Day 2026 collection is already rolling out with a stamped anniversary Pikachu and a commemorative coin.

Thirty years in, the little pocket monsters that started as a schoolyard trade have become some of the most valuable collectibles in the world. Somewhere, a parent is looking at that shoebox in the closet a little differently.

Donald Trump’s AI images just won’t quit. Last week, the president posted a faux infomercial-style ‘TDS’ PSA on social media. The video, which featured ‘Dr. Trump’ explaining the cure for TDS (avoid fake news, say your prayers, and drink a Diet Coke), included deepfake likenesses of A-list actors Rosie O’Donnell, John Leguizamo, Whoopi Goldberg, Edward Norton, Robert De Niro, and Julia Roberts. 

And now, Trump is back at it—sharing a clearly doctored photo of former POTUS Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obamaexiting a graffiti-covered Air Force One.

The new Truth Social post includes an obviously altered image of more than just the couple waving from the stairs on the plane. 

In addition to the Obamas smiling for the press, the former president’s “Yes We Can” campaign rallying cry, “BLM,” and Arabic script (which translates to “praise be to God” or “thank God”) are ‘spraypainted’ across Air Force One’s exterior. 

Along with the not-so-subtly racist undertones, the pretend pic also seems to take a jab at the former Air Force One. Trump's new over-the-top, opulent, retrofitted Qatari jet features the president's navy, red, and gold color palette, forgoing the traditional, trademark light blue hull. The mock version of Air Force One in Trump’s recent post is painted, of course, light sky blue. 

What is the reaction to Donald Trump’s new Truth Social Obama post?

It’s no secret that these posts are meant to get reactions and garner as much attention as possible. And this particular image generated an almost-immediate backlash.

One Redditor pointed out, “It’s been all these years and Obama still lives rent free in his head,” while another said the president, “can’t stop thinking about how much better the Obamas are than him at everything.”

Other Reddit users joked, “He just has Obama derangement syndrome” and “Great role model for kids, right?” 

But the backlash didn't end there. Commenters pointed out, “Dude cares more about attacking Obama than helping the American people” and, “Is he having these made, or is he tweeting out ones he sees? I’m not sure which would be worse. Probably both simultaneously.” 

This isn't the first Trump-versus-Obama faux post to cause a major firestorm for the president. In February, Trump shared a video that depicted the Obamas as cartoon apes. The clip was removed from social media after critics, including some top Republicans, slammed it as “unacceptable.”

Sigh, the Japanese metal pioneers, are marking another major milestone amid the band's European and North American tour.

Thirty-seven years after their formation, the avant-garde black metal band announced the upcoming release of its new album.

In an Instagram update shared by British independent record label Peaceville Records, Sigh, fronted by Mirai Kawashima and featuring bandmates Dr. Mikannibal, guitarist Nozomu Wakai, Frédéric Leclercq of Kreator and DragonForce on bass and Mike Heller, the renowned U.S. drummer known for his work with Raven and Fear Factory.

“Main-man Mirai Kawashima notes this as being as equally personal an album as ‘Shiki’, both musically and lyrically. From a musical perspective, if you were to place the main ingredients of Celtic Frost, Voivod, Black Sabbath, horror movies and Japan into a cauldron and stir it, you will get ‘Goh-ka’. Numerous additional spices such as psychedelic rock, prog rock and classical music are also evident over the album’s close to one-hour duration,” the caption reads.

Fans can expect a powerful, technically impressive sound and an epic addition to the band's catalog as the theme highlights the physical and spiritual effects caused by karmic consequences.

Scheduled to be released on Sept. 4, Goh-ka features 11 tracks, including:

The upcoming album will also feature a special guest guitar solo on “Unputenpu” by Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth.

The band's major announcement comes after kicking off its massive tour this year.

Sigh is currently on a two-part tour across North America and Europe and is joined by Denver's Dreadnought and Devil Master on selected dates.

The 2026 tour is also special for the band as it marks its first U.S. dates in 20 years.

Bunnie Xo has some big plans for her life post–Jelly Roll marriage.

The Dumb Blonde podcast host, 46, took to her Instagram Stories on July 3, where she revealed she has been accepted into Arizona State University.

"Dr. Xo, loading?" she wrote over a screenshot of the school's acceptance message.

While Bunnie, whose real name is Alisa DeFord, did not share what she plans to study, the exciting update comes just weeks after she and the "Save Me" singer, 41, decided to call it quits after 10 years of marriage.

Jelly Roll, born Jason DeFord, filed for divorce from the influencer on May 18 in Tennessee, citing "irreconcilable differences." Though Bunnie did not confirm the news until a few weeks later, she said on a June 18 episode of her podcast that she was "so relieved" to finally be able to say her piece.

"[Jelly Roll] and I are getting a divorce. Okay, nobody cry, nobody f–king get upset. It's happening," Bunnie told her listeners. "We did a f–king great job, it'll never be replicated again, but our future is so much more important, and being happy and healthy, and best friends through this is probably, I think, the biggest gift that we could have given each other."

While their romance may be over, the pair, who tied the knot in 2016, plan to remain in each other's lives and even plan to try for a baby after previously embarking on an IVF journey.

"That's my f–king best friend, dude. Like, I love him," she said. "And you guys are going to be shocked to hear this, but we're still having a baby. We have been the most unconventional couple that you guys have ever encountered."

"We're going to co-parent together," Bunnie continued.

As for Jelly Roll, he's moving forward as well, with Bunnie sharing that her ex has already started dating since the split.

"Has my husband started dating? Yes, he has — and we're happy for him," Bunnie went on to reveal. "And I'm excited to discover myself single."

And while life may be taking them in different directions now that they're no longer together, Bunnie maintained that she will always be in the country music star's corner.

"He has always been my best friend, and I love that man more than life itself," she explained. "You guys have seen how I ride for that mofo. Even to this day, behind the scenes, your girl is still riding for that man — and I always will."

The Islanders competed in a couples karaoke competition hosted by Ariana Madix. Following the festivities, Madix revealed that America had been voting, and the couples they kept safe from the vote would be voting for the couple they felt had the least chemistry and were the least compatible.

As a result, Kenzie Annis & Dylan Wrona, Kayda Bosse & Zach Georgiou, and Corbin Mimis and Parmida Keshani were in the bottom three. Having just won the karaoke competition, Kenzie and Dylan were safe and removed from the chopping block.

The safe Islanders were all then allowed to stand behind the couple they wanted to save, between Kayda & Zach and Corbin & Parmida.

Ultimately, more Islanders stood behind Kayda and Zach, saving them for another round, and Corbin and Parmida were dumped from the Island.

Hannah Waddingham is sharing her thoughts on one of Hollywood's most hotly debated casting questions.

While attending a special screening of her new Prime Video action-comedy series, Ride or Die, last month at London's Ham Yard Hotel, Waddingham, 51, was asked what she enjoys most about playing powerful women on screen.

"It's their truth. It's who they are in the quiet — that's what gets me first," Waddingham, who plays an assassin in the new series, told People of what attracts her to those roles. "[My] interest is piqued by who they are when they're alone, and the foibles and the fears and the aspirations they have when they're alone."

Waddingham also weighed in on the future of James Bond and shared whether she'd ever be interested in stepping into the shoes of the iconic MI6 operative.

"No! God, no!" the Ted Lasso star exclaimed, adding that Ride or Die is as close as it gets to Bond for her. "No, this is my version of 007."

In fact, she doesn't believe a woman needs to play Bond at all.

"A woman doesn't need to play James Bond — we've got other things to do," Waddingham quipped.

The conversation over who will step into the iconic role of James Bond has been swirling around Hollywood since Daniel Craig stepped away from the franchise following the release of his final film, No Time to Die, which premiered globally in October 2021.

And while Waddingham doesn't believe she has the license to kill, the official casting process for the next 007 is underway. Though no leading man has been confirmed for the part, several actors remain in contention.

Leading the rumor mill is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who has brushed off speculation when asked about the potential role.

"I can only really talk about the things I'm going to show and tell," Taylor-Johnson said in a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone UK. "So, The Fall Guy, Nosferatu, Kraven the Hunter. I'm here to promote those."

While the Fuze star appears to be the frontrunner, he's far from the only actor linked to the coveted role. Jacob Elordi, Henry Cavill, and Paul Mescal have all been rumored for the part, along with rising star Louis Partridge, Ireland's Daryl McCormack, Bridgerton alum Regé-Jean Page, and Idris Elba, who, in a June 8 interview with British GQ, called his rumored casting unrealistic.

"I've always felt that it's not a realistic thing," Elba told the outlet. "James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don't go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won't [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That's not what they like in their culture. Period."

"Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let's not try and make it woke," he continued. "I think you've got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don't try and answer the world's taste. Just be Bond."

Before Catherine Laga'aia ever stepped onto a movie set, she was a nine-year-old girl watching Moana for the first time and seeing something she'd never seen on screen before. "She was an idol," Laga'aia said of the character. "It was the first time that I got to see what I looked like on screen. I saw my hair, my face, my nose." A decade later, she's the one wearing the title role.

Laga'aia, a 19-year-old Australian actress of Samoan and English descent, was cast as the lead in Disney's live-action Moana after beating out more than 32,000 other hopefuls who auditioned for the part. The film, which reunites her with Dwayne Johnson as Maui, arrives in theaters July 10, marking the 10th anniversary of the original animated movie. For Laga'aia, it's also her first credited film role.

The casting search wrapped in June 2024, and Disney kept Laga'aia's identity under wraps for months while she prepared for the part. She's since described the process as both overwhelming and deeply personal. "I feel like I've been kind of hit with a wave of things," she said. "It feels like I'm finally sharing a story that I've been keeping secret for so long. It's like you're finally allowed to let people in."

Acting runs in her family. Laga'aia is one of eight children born to actor Jay Laga'aia, known for his roles in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Australian television, and his wife, Sandra Jane. Four of her siblings have also worked as performers, including her older brother Iosefa, who played both George Washington and Aaron Burr in an Australian stage production of Hamilton. When her father learned of her casting in 2024, he made an Instagram post calling it her "huge adventure" and writing, "You travel with the teachings of your parents and the love of your family and friends."

Before landing the role, Laga'aia's screen credits were modest. She appeared in three episodes of the Prime Video miniseries The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, a drama led by Sigourney Weaver. Moana represents a different scale of exposure entirely, to say the least.

Original voice actress Auli'i Cravalho, who won the part at 14, does not reprise the role on screen but serves as an executive producer on the new film, alongside Johnson and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The live-action Moana follows the same general story as the 2016 original: a young woman answers the ocean's call, leaves her home island of Motunui and sets off with the shape-shifting demigod Maui to break a curse threatening her people. For Laga'aia, though, it was a little more. "To me, Moana was an icon," she said. "It was a rite of passage" for young girls to finally see a Disney princess who looked like them, she added, echoing sentiments shared widely by fans since Cravalho's original casting nearly a decade ago.

As the film's July 10 release approaches, Laga'aia's story has become as much a part of the rollout as the movie itself, which has to be truly amazing for an actress raised on the original.

According to Blabbermouth, guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine shared plans for the band's near future in an interview broadcast on a radio station in Turkey.

"We've got an announcement we're making [in July] that is so f---ing massive. It's out of this world,” he said. “Let me say it like that. I gave you a clue right there. It's out of this world.”

He added that the band is also planning another cruise.

“We got another MegaCruise we're starting to work on, something we're gonna announce, Peace Sails cruise,” he said. “And that's gonna be—unlike the last time, where I got sick and I couldn't go, I’m going to be on that one.”

The MegaCruise is a five-day heavy metal music festival and cruise hosted by Megadeth. The inaugural event took place in October 2019, sailing from Los Angeles to San Diego and Ensenada, Mexico, aboard the Norwegian Jewel. Featuring live concerts across multiple stages, the cruise included shows from Megadeth, Lamb of God, Anthrax, and more.

Mustaine was unable to take part in the cruise because he was undergoing intensive treatment and recovery for throat cancer. The rest of the band, including bassist David Ellefson, were on board to entertain and interact with the fans.

“That was a real shame for me,” he added, “because we had booked it, all the bands, and everybody had bought their tickets, and everybody was ready to go, and I got really sick. That was the beginning of the evidence that I was developing throat cancer. And so I had to stay home.”

The thrash metal legend, who underwent a “gnarly” treatment, also shared that he’s been in remission and is "happy about that." Although there have been side effects affecting his dental health.

“But you know what? I still can talk, and I can still sing, and a lot of people who get tongue cancer can't even talk,” he said. “So I thank God for that, and I thank my doctors and my family.”

The news and health update come as Megadeth was forced to cancel its most recent show in Lisbon due to technical issues "beyond our control." In a message posted to Instagram today, July 5, the band said, "We never want to let you down … and are just as disappointed as you are with this situation."

Founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, California, Megadeth has been going strong for more than four decades, with Mustaine at the helm. Shortly after his departure from Metallica, Mustaine formed Megadeth with Ellefson, establishing their blistering, technically demanding thrash style on their debut album, Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!

Right now, Megadeth is finishing up its European festival run and will return to the States later this month for several headlining dates before joining Iron Maiden’s Run for Your Lives World Tour in August.

Stranger Things actor Maya Hawke has revealed to People that she has moved into her famous mother's neighborhood.

Maya is the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. The 1990s icons wed in 1998 and have two children together, Maya and Leon, before splitting in 2005.

“I just got myself a home a couple of blocks away from my mom,” the 27-year-old told the outlet. “I’m so excited to finally be able to put some roots down.”

The Do Revenge star has moved to upstate New York, which is great for her new filming schedule. She is currently working on The God of the Woods, a TV adaptation of Liz Moore’s 2024 novel of the same name.

She continued, “I feel like I have the best summer of my life going on, where I get to experience neither thing at the same time.”

Maya, who married Christian Lee Hutson on Valentine's Day, has always been open about her close bond with her mother, Uma Thurman.

“What isn’t a mother-daughter bond?” Thurman told People back in 2023 about her relationship with her daughter. “Good communication. That is a big challenge, to make sure we keep communication healthy, strong and open with your family.”

Last year, Uma Thurman told Late Night With Seth Meyers how proud she was at her children "surpassing" her own career.

“As a mother, you know, honestly, I’m so proud of them and they’re so together, and honestly, seeing your kids kind of surpass you is awesome,” the Pulp Fiction star said, per People. 

 She added about her daughter Maya and her son Leon, who is also an actor. “I think they’re so talented. And so you’re always anxious that the circumstances all support the best outcome. The only thing that makes me nervous is I want them to have the best circumstances."

Some rock careers are defined by one band, while others stretch across decades of unexpected turns.

Jimmy Crespo belongs in the second group. The guitarist, best known for his years with Aerosmith, turns 72 on July 5 after building a career that placed him alongside some of rock's biggest names.

Crespo was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1954 and went on to become one of the guitarists who helped carry Aerosmith through a difficult but important chapter. He served as the band's lead guitarist from 1979 to 1984, stepping in after Joe Perry's departure and contributing to the group's 1982 album Rock in a Hard Place.

That period put Crespo in a rare position. Aerosmith had already become one of the biggest American rock bands of the 1970s, and joining the group meant entering a legacy that was still very much alive, even as the band was going through major changes.

Still, Crespo's playing helped define that era of Aerosmith's sound. His guitar work brought a hard rock edge to the band during a transitional stretch, demonstrating the kind of skill and confidence needed to stand out in a group already known for its powerful guitar presence.

His work also earned praise from one of rock's most recognizable frontmen. According to Vintage Guitar, Steven Tyler once called Crespo "One of the best guitarists I've ever known," while the publication described his playing as "a textbook study in classic hard rock."

Beyond Aerosmith, Crespo built the kind of career that made him more than just a former member of one famous band. Vintage Guitar noted that he performed or recorded with artists including Bernie Taupin, Stevie Nicks, Julian Lennon, Billy Squier and Rod Stewart. His official website also lists work with Meat Loaf, Dee Snider and Lita Ford, showing how widely his guitar work traveled across rock.

That long list of credits reflects what made Crespo's career so durable. Whether he was stepping into a massive band, supporting major artists or continuing his own projects, he remained connected to the sound of classic hard rock.

Now turning 72, Crespo's legacy stands as a reminder of the musicians who helped keep rock moving through its most unpredictable eras. His time with Aerosmith may be the chapter fans know best, but his decades of work across rock show a guitarist whose influence was never limited to one band.

The country singer opened up about his ongoing weight loss journey in and article shared by People on Sunday, July 5, revealing that after shedding the weight, everyday activities have become dramatically easier.

"I don't sweat anymore, which is amazing," Smith, 40, said. "I used to be totally out of breath tying my shoes. I can jump around a lot more."

The changes have extended beyond his daily life and into his performances, too. Speaking with the outlet while attending the Sports Illustrated and Tight End University's Tight Ends & Friends Concert in Nashville back on June 23, Smith said staying in shape helps him give fans the best show possible. The "I Found You" singer also admitted one of his favorite perks has been rediscovering his wardrobe. "I just feel better. Although he's already made incredible progress, Smith isn't done yet. "I think I want to get under 200 lbs.," he shared of his ambitious goal. "So I was like 275 lbs., somewhere in that world. But I want to get down to like 185 lbs. again."

The milestone comes just weeks after Smith celebrated losing 71 pounds on social media. In May, he posted side-by-side before-and-after photos on Instagram and wrote, "Another milestone reached today….. 😭😭😭😭😭," with fans filling the comments to congratulate him on his transformation.

Smith has previously revealed that his health journey began in November 2024 after battling a severe upper respiratory infection, an experience that prompted him to reevaluate his eating and drinking habits.

Some of rock's most enduring songs never become chart hits.

That was certainly true for Kiss' "Detroit Rock City." Released in 1976 on the landmark album Destroyer, the hard-driving anthem has become one of the band's signature songs despite having zero chart history.

The reason is simple: while "Detroit Rock City" was originally issued as the A-side of a single, its B-side, the heartfelt ballad "Beth," became the unlikely hit. As "Beth" caught fire, it ultimately reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 while "Detroit Rock City" was left without a chart run of its own.

The song captured Kiss at one of the most creative moments of its career.

Written by Paul Stanley and Bob Ezrin, "Detroit Rock City" was inspired by the real-life death of a fan who was reportedly killed in a car accident while driving to a Kiss concert.

"Bob Ezrin at the time really wanted us to push ourselves in terms of our lyrics and perspective," Stanley told Ultimate Classic Rock. "And I remembered that a fan going to our show in Charlotte got killed, was hit by a car, and I just remember thinking about the idea of somebody traveling to see something that celebrates life, and in the process losing their life. So the song became about somebody traveling to a Kiss concert and not making it. It was still championing Detroit but also memorialized somebody who didn't get there."

The song became one of the band's most cinematic and emotionally layered recordings. Musically, it also showcased Kiss' evolution.

Produced by Ezrin, Destroyer featured a more ambitious sound than the band's earlier albums, and "Detroit Rock City" reflected that growth with layered guitars, dramatic production and one of Ace Frehley's most celebrated guitar solos.

"Bob and Paul came up with the intro riff," Frehley told Rolling Stone in 2016. "I just put the icing on the cake, with my inverted rhythm guitars. If you listen to a lot of Kiss songs, I'm always playing an octave above Paul to make it thicker sounding. It seemed to work over the years."

The song's opening sound effects and seamless transition into "King of the Night Time World" helped establish the album as one of the defining rock records of the 1970s.

Although "Beth" became the commercial phenomenon, "Detroit Rock City" gradually emerged as the song fans most closely associated with Kiss' live shows. Its explosive opening riff and arena-ready chorus made it a concert staple, while generations of listeners embraced it as one of the greatest hard rock songs of its era.

The song's reputation has only grown with time. It has appeared on numerous greatest-rock-song lists, inspired the 1999 film Detroit Rock City and remains a fixture on classic rock radio to this day.

More than 50 years later, "Detroit Rock City" stands as proof that chart positions don't always determine a song's legacy. Overshadowed commercially by its own B-side, the Kiss classic has ultimately become one of the band’' most enduring recordings and one of hard rock's definitive anthems.

Shocked, Clark asked if there was some kind of country music superstar group chat that Brown was involved with, to which Brown said, “If there is, I ain’t invited.”

Brown went on to explain that, though he knows plenty of artists, the friendships don’t really extend beyond text messaging.

“Morgan [Wallen], he’d probably text me the most,” Brown said. “Shaboozey, Chris Young … [Jason] Aldean has been my guy. There are other artists that I could text, but there’s a difference between texting somebody and being boys with somebody. … When you don’t have somebody that you can talk to about that, and have a brothership over it, I don’t know if I could really say we’re friends.”

Turning his attention to anyone who may be watching online, he made an honest plea for potential buds to reach out, saying, “If anybody’s watching this … I just want a friend in the industry that we can just chill, come over, hit the golf sim, have a few beers, talk.”

The topic of friendships came up again as the “Heaven” singer shared insights into his friendship with NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I think it’s awesome that my job’s got me where I can hang out with Pat and just be friends with him,” Brown said. “Pat’s a cool dude. He’s normal. That’s another thing that I also love, because a lot of people have egos. … I shut down around that.”

Though he might not have that many pals in the industry, he does have several besties at home, per People. Adam Sandler may have officiated Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding, but it was one simple piece of marriage advice that stood out—at least to Andy Reidanyway.

During an appearance at an event in Salt Lake City on Sunday, July 5, the Kansas City Chiefs head coach reflected on the couple's lavish Madison Square Garden wedding and revealed one memorable moment from Sandler's ceremony.

According to Reid, Sandler's biggest piece of advice for the newlyweds couldn't have been simpler. "Adam Sandler conducted the service there and he told them to, 'Keep kissing.' In its simplest form. That's a good thing," Reid recalled in a video shared by Deseret. "It's hard to argue when you give your wife a kiss or your wife gives you a kiss… And make sure you do it every day, every minute that you have an opportunity to. Knock it out, and you won't have any problems."

The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood is remembering the late Amy Winehouse and the words they exchanged.

While speaking to The Sunday Times about The Rolling Stones’ new album, Foreign Tongues, the 79-year-old recalled speaking to the singer before she died in 2011, aged just 27.

“She would go: ‘Oh Ronnie, what am I going to do?' I said: ‘Look, everyone knows you've got vodka in the water bottle. Get it together and get on stage.' But if you could get her up there and she stayed there, it'd be great,” he said in the interview published Saturday, July 4.

“I'm sad because she didn't do her full span,” Wood added. “It was like saying goodbye to Billie Holiday again.” Winehouse struggled with addiction throughout her career, battling drug and alcohol addiction along with bulimia.

July 5 marks a special milestone for one of classic rock's pioneering guitarists.

Michael Monarch, the original lead guitarist and a founding member of Steppenwolf, turns 76 today. Best known for helping define the band's hard-hitting sound during its formative years, Monarch also went on to perform with the all-star supergroup World Classic Rockers, extending his legacy well beyond Steppenwolf's earliest success.

After co-founding Steppenwolf in the late 1960s alongside vocalist John Kay, keyboardist Goldy McJohn, bassist Rushton Moreve and drummer Jerry Edmonton, the young guitarist quickly became an essential part of the band's distinctive blend of blues, psychedelic rock and hard rock. His powerful guitar work helped establish Steppenwolf as one of the defining rock acts of the era.

During Monarch's tenure, the band released several of its most enduring songs, including "Born to Be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride," "The Pusher" and "Rock Me."

"Born to Be Wild," in particular, became a cultural phenomenon after its inclusion in the 1969 film Easy Rider, helping popularize the phrase "heavy metal" through its famous lyric, "heavy metal thunder."

"I was using my Fender Esquire guitar into a Fender Concert Amp, kind of like a Super Reverb, but without the reverb, with four ten-inch speakers," Monarch told Guitar World of the recording session for the hit song. "It had white, round knobs and was covered in brown Tolex. I had turned everything to ten, as there was no eleven back then. Engineers Ritchie [Podolor] and Bill [Cooper] asked me to turn it down because it was too distorted. I don't think I did, and eventually, they thought it blended with the organ in a cool way."

Although Monarch left Steppenwolf in 1969, his contributions to the band's earliest recordings helped lay the foundation for its lasting influence. The group's music continues to be celebrated on classic rock radio, while songs like "Born to Be Wild" remain synonymous with freedom, motorcycles and the open road.

"After Steppenwolf, I worked on building a studio in my house," Monarch recalled in an interview. "I had a lot of musician friends coming over to play; some of the guys from Little Feat came by a few times. I was also thinking of starting a new band. I ended up selling the house and moving to England in '73, and I started a band there backed by the Robert Stigwood Organization. The drummer was Herman Rarebell, who later went on to play in the Scorpions."

Monarch later reunited with fellow classic rock veterans as a member of World Classic Rockers, a touring supergroup featuring musicians from some of the biggest bands of the 1960s and 1970s. The lineup has included members of Steppenwolf, Journey, Santana, Boston, Toto, Lynyrd Skynyrd and other legendary acts, giving audiences the opportunity to hear some of rock’s most iconic songs performed by the artists who helped create them.

"There's a big market for this band in the corporate world. We started it in '96, and it's still going strong; we play great venues all over the world," Monarch said. "We played in Monte Carlo, the Bahamas, Bermuda, South Africa, Ireland, and all over the U.S. and Canada. We play Hawaii often. We also do the fair circuit, but corporate shows more."

More than five decades after helping launch one of rock's most influential bands, Monarch's impact continues to resonate with fans around the world. As he celebrates his 76th birthday on July 5, his work with Steppenwolf and the World Classic Rockers stands as a reminder of the enduring power of classic rock’s golden era.
