Summer gets pretty toasty, but there is something about the end of July that brings out the sweltering temps. With August on the horizon, the mercury can only rise, leaving humans and animals alike in need of a cool down.

Some pets get to enjoy the air conditioning in their homes, while others prefer to cool off in a pet pool. Zoo animals' cool-down routines are often the perfect trifecta of temperature control, playtime, and enrichment. For an otter at Perth Zoo, it's as simple as giving him a hose.

Simple Enrichment or the Perfect Cooldown?

Sometimes enrichment for an otter is as simple as turning the hose on 😂 🦦

You may wonder how water qualifies as enrichment for an otter, since most of them spend a lot of time in it. However, while Asian small-clawed otters enjoy a good swim and live near water, they spend the majority of their time on land. In fact, they spend the most time on land of all otter species. So for them, playing with running water from a hose is the perfect form of enrichment.

In a video from Perth Zoo in Western Australia, one of the otters is holding its paws under a stream of water from a hose and is absolutely thrilled to pieces. The otter brings its hand in a nd out from the stream, even ducking its head close like it was going to take a sip. Of course, the stream coming from the hose is probably too strong for the little guy to drink from, but I don't blame him for trying.

The little otter seems content to keep putting his tiny paws under the water while it splashes into the bucket beneath him. One fan asked the zoo in the comments if the otter likes it for the sound or for the movement. The zoo responded, "Asian Small-clawed Otters are very playful and love the water! You'll often spot them playing with sticks, pebbles, or even water!"

It sounds like these little guys are pretty easy to entertain. Another fan writes, "All he wants is some water...adorable!!" His simplistic needs are pretty cute, especially since he seems so happy.

Asian Small-clawed Otter Facts

Currently, two Asian small-clawed otters live at the Perth Zoo: Saati and Squid. The video isn't clear about which one it features, but something tells me both of them would likely have the same reaction to the water. On top of being the otters that spend the most time on land, they are also the smallest.

They weigh less than 10 pounds and are only around two feet long. Of those 24 inches, around 10 to 14 inches are their tails. According to the Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute, they can live up to 12 years or more in captivity. Some have even lived over 20.

They are very vocal and live in groups of 15 or more in the wild. However, they hunt on their own. Perth Zoo has a small grouping, but Saati is participating in one of the local breeding programs. Wild Asian small-clawed otters are listed as a vulnerable species. It is hard for researchers to get a solid count of the animals since they tend to hide. However, their population is estimated to have dropped by at least 30 percent in the last 30 years.

Did you know that many pets, dogs included, show their affection through their eyes? Soft, relaxed eye contact is one of the most powerful signals dogs use to bond with their humans. In fact, it's linked to the release of oxytocin, a hormone tied to trust and connection.

There's no denying that licking is a natural canine behavior that blends affection, communication and comfort. It’s rooted in early social bonding behaviors seen in wolves and puppies. Therefore it makes sense that your devoted companion would do the same to you.

“In the wild, wolves groom one another as a social activity,” Sinkevich reveals. “This behavior remains in dogs, with puppies licking their mother’s muzzles or dogs licking one another to show affection.”

It can also help dogs self-soothe by releasing feel-good chemicals like endorphins and dopamine, which strengthens the emotional bond they feel with you.

They Rest Their Paw on Your Leg

When it comes to a dog's body language, when they gently place a paw on your leg, it can be a quiet request for connection, or your dog’s way of reassuring you during difficult moments. While this gesture can feel subtle, it’s one of the clearest ways dogs initiate physical contact and tell you they are there for you.

“Physical touch is one of the primary ways our dogs communicate with us,” Sinkevich explains. “By extending a paw, our dogs are offering a helping hand in times of distress, expressing ‘I’m here with you’ without making a sound.”

They Match Your Pace

How do you know if your dog loves you? See if they match your pace as dogs often mirror the emotional state of their humans. Their energy level, movement and even posture can change in response to how you’re feeling, so the next time you notice your pup do this, know it's intentional.

“An energetic dog may become unusually calm when you’re sick, grieving or stressed,” Fleming says. “This ability to synchronize with their person’s mood is one reason dogs are such effective emotional companions.”

They Stand Between You and Something Unfamiliar

Some dogs instinctively place themselves between their owner and something unfamiliar, such as a stranger, another animal or a new object in their environment. It can feel protective, but it’s often deeper than guarding behavior alone.

“This isn’t always protective behavior or aggression,” Fleming explains. “Often, it’s a quiet way of staying close while assessing the situation, reflecting their awareness of you and their desire to remain connected when something unfamiliar appears.”

In those moments, your dog is often doing more than reacting to the environment. They’re choosing proximity to you as their emotional anchor.

Here is why foxtails injuries may lead to some serious veterinarian bills, and how to help prevent an injury from happening in the first place, according to a vet.

What Are Foxtails (and Why Are They So Dangerous to Pets)?

"Foxtails are the sharp, barbed seed heads of certain wild grasses that become dry and brittle during the summer months and are a common weed in California and the West," Dr. Halligan says. "Each seed has tiny, backward-facing barbs that act like fishhooks. Instead of falling out, they only move forward, allowing them to burrow deeper into your pet's skin, ears, nose, eyes, paws and even lungs. They cause problems by embedding in tissue, carrying bacteria with them. This leads to painful abscesses, chronic infections, and, in the worst cases, can reach the lungs, chest cavity, or other vital structures and become life-threatening."

Why a Foxtail Injury May Cost Thousands at the Vet

Despite their seeds' small size, foxtails can lead to costly vet bills for a number of reasons. "The seed itself is tiny, but finding it can be incredibly difficult," Dr. Halligan explains. "Simple surface foxtails between the toes can sometimes be removed under light sedation for a few hundred dollars, but many cases are much more complicated."

Depending on where the foxtail becomes lodged in your pup's body determines how costly care may be. "Many foxtails require sedation or general anesthesia because they're painful and often lodged deep inside the body," Dr. Halligan says. "Depending on where the foxtail is located, pets may need X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, endoscopy, surgery, antibiotics, pain medication and multiple follow-up visits to locate the foxtail."

If the foxtail has the opportunity to go deeper into your pet's body, this may add up even more. "Once the foxtail migrates deeper or causes an abscess, treatment can quickly climb into the $1,000-$3,000 range. Foxtails inhaled into the lungs or chest cavity may require advanced imaging and surgery that can exceed $5,000-$10,000," Dr. Halligan warns.

The 5 Most Vulnerable Foxtail Entry Points on Your Pet's Body

1. Nose

First, the nose. "Dogs often sniff the ground where foxtails grow. A foxtail lodged in the nose causes sudden, violent sneezing, pawing at the face, nasal discharge or even nosebleeds," Dr. Halligan says.

2. Ears

Next up: the ears. "Foxtails commonly work their way deep into the ear canal, causing head shaking, scratching, crying, holding the head to one side or sudden pain," Dr. Halligan warns.

3. Eyes

The eyes are another vulnerable entry point for foxtails. "A foxtail trapped under the eyelid can cause squinting, excessive tearing, redness, swelling and corneal ulcers if not removed quickly," Dr. Halligan says.

4. Paws (especially between the toes)

Pay special attention to your pup's toes, as this is one of the most common places foxtails can get lodged. "Owners may notice limping, excessive licking, swelling, redness or a draining tract between the toes," Dr. Halligan explains.

5. Skin and Coat

Finally, foxtails can actually get into your dog's skin and coat. "Foxtails can penetrate almost anywhere on the body, especially in the armpits, groin, chest and areas with thinner skin. They often create painful swellings or abscesses that continue to worsen until the seed is removed," Dr. Halligan says.

Bug Bite vs. Foxtail: How to Know the Difference

While bug bites and a foxtail injury may look similar, there are some distinct differences between the two. "A bug bite is usually a localized allergic reaction that is red, raised, itchy or painful and often improves within 24 to 48 hours. Bug bites usually don’t create a migrating tract or deep abscess the way a foxtail does," Dr. Halligan says. "A foxtail injury tends to get progressively worse because the seed continues migrating deeper into the tissue. Warning signs include persistent licking or chewing at one spot, limping, repeated sneezing, sudden head shaking, a draining wound or swelling that doesn't improve—or gets worse."

Another clue that can help you distinguish between a bug bite and a foxtail is timing. "One of the biggest clues is timing. If your dog was hiking, running through dry grass, or playing in fields and suddenly develops these symptoms afterward, I would be highly suspicious of a foxtail," Dr. Halligan says. "If symptoms persist beyond a day or your pet seems [in pain], don't wait. The sooner a foxtail is removed, the simpler—and less expensive—the treatment usually is."

The 10-Minute Post-Walk Routine That Saves Lives (and Money)

Simply taking 10 minutes to check all over your pet's body, particularly the most vulnerable entry points, to remove any foxtails that got caught on your pup's fur may not only save your dog's life, but it may also save you a trip to the emergency vet. "The good news is that most of these expensive emergencies are preventable with careful inspection after every outdoor adventure," Dr. Halligan says.

How to Protect Your Pet From Foxtails This Summer

First and foremost, it's all about prevention. "Prevention is always easier—and far less expensive—than treatment," Dr. Halligan says. "One of my favorite sayings is, 'The cheapest veterinary bill is the emergency you never have.' Catching a foxtail early can save your pet from pain and save owners thousands of dollars in advanced treatment."

Dr. Halligan recommends the following to help prevent foxtail injuries:

• Don't walk pets through dry grassy fields where you know foxtails are common.
• Keep up with your yard work, and remove foxtails before they dry and release seeds.
• Check your dog thoroughly after every hike or walk, paying especially close attention to their paws, between their toes, ears, eyes, nose, armpits and groin.
• Brush your dog regularly, especially if they're a long-haired breed, because foxtails often become hidden in thick coats.
• Trim the long hair between your pup's paw pads during foxtail season.
• Pay close attention to any unusual symptoms. "Never ignore persistent sneezing, limping, excessive licking or head shaking after outdoor activities. These are classic warning signs that deserve a veterinary examination," Dr. Halligan notes.

Wow, Hebe had so much to say, and for good reason! She meowed and meowed throughout the video to tell her mom that she isn't receiving the 5-star treatment she deserves. She even got louder when the “spare human” tried to shush her. That’s one smart cat!

How to Bring a Kitten Home

Bringing a new pet home is super exciting! But it can also be overwhelming—for you and for them. Preparation ahead of time is key and being ready to practice patience and let things happen naturally is best for and it's best for your kitty, too.

The most important thing you can do to prepare your home for a new kitten is to first set up a secluded, secure, and quiet place for them to acclimate to their new home. Kittens should be in this space away from other pets for at least a few days or even up to a couple of weeks. They should have access to everything they need in this space, including their food, water, and litter box.

It's important to take your time socializing and bonding with your cat and let them come to you on their own terms. Trying to force it is never a good idea and can actually harm your potential relationship for the future.

Last but not least, always make sure to kitten-proof your whole home and cut off access to places where that isn't possible. Safety is always of the utmost importance.

Walk into any animal shelter in the country, and you will see them. A dog with oversized ears that never quite grew into its head. This Friday, July 31, is National Mutt Day, a twice-a-year celebration, which also falls on December 2. Colleen Paige, an animal welfare advocate, started the tradition in 2005 after recognizing that mixed-breed dogs are more common in shelters than purebred dogs and are less likely to be adopted.

You do not need expensive gifts or special plans to celebrate. Here are a few ideas for making the day memorable.

• Take your dog somewhere they haven't been. Mutts are curious by nature, and an unfamiliar trail will offer plenty of mental stimulation.
• Turn the day into an afternoon challenge, trying to teach your dog some new silly tricks for fun. Or turn it into an adventure, hiding treats around the house for a scent game. If you cannot think of anything else, freeze a stuffed food toy.

The goal is not to create a perfect Instagram moment. It is about spending time doing something your dog loves.

Statistics compiled by the Zebra show that nearly half of pet parents in the United States own a mixed-breed dog, making mutts the most common dog in the country. Yet many dogs waiting in shelters are mixed-breed.

Most dogs spend their beach day digging holes, chasing tennis balls, or enjoying their zoomies on the sand. Now imagine a dog hopping onto a surfboard, riding a wave, and looking like a professional? You do not have to imagine it; you can see it this Saturday in California.

The World Dog Surfing Championship returns on August 1 to California for its 10th annual showing. The event takes place on the Northern California coast near Pacifica.

Dogs compete by size and surfing style. The event starts with small dogs, followed by medium and large dogs.

Then, after a short break, the competition continues with tandems, including dog-dog and human-dog tandems. By midday, the winners will get their awards.

Judges score each on four criteria: length of ride, technique, confidence on the board and the size or strength of the wave being ridden.

Of course, safety is important. Every dog has to wear a life vest, and their parent swims alongside to help position the dog on the board and push them into a wave.

Can Any Dog Learn to Surf?

The short answer is yes, but not all dogs are naturals. Breeds like retrievers and Portuguese water dogs, confident swimmers with a playful personality, will adapt faster than a Chihuahua.

Small dogs have excellent balance, but the biggest requirement is not athletic ability. It is enthusiasm. A dog who loves trying new things will pick up things quicker than a nervous one around water.

Registration for this year's World Dog Surfing Championship has already concluded. Luckily, attendence is free, as long as you reserve your spot.

The TikTok from @sharing.lov3 told Julie's story, who was surrendered to the shelter in June because her family was expecting a new baby.

"Julie is only 8 months old and she is deaf," the caption explained as clips of the precious puppy showed her loving personality. "Normally, puppies don’t stay in the shelter for very long. But Julie has been there for almost 1 month."

The 8-month-old pup is sweet, playful, and over-the-top adorable, yet potential adopters often lose interest after they hear her whole story.

Deaf Dogs Can Learn Hand Signals

Reasons for deafness in dogs range from genetics to old age and illness. Still, canines are extremely resilient and quickly learn to compensate for any physical limitations. Many deaf dogs are easily trained to communicate through hand signals for basic commands and even more complex messages. Julie already knows various visual cues and is a quick learner.

Interestingly, this isn't a problem limited to cats who spend time outdoors. Air conditioning and indoor lighting can also disrupt the natural shedding cycle of any cat, including an indoor cat, Parente explains, which means even cats who never leave a climate-controlled home can experience heavier shedding at unexpected times.

Some cats are also simply more predisposed to hairball trouble than others. Hairballs are most common in long-haired, older, or overweight cats, since they either groom more readily or have difficulty moving hair through their digestive tract properly, according to Parente. Rather than relying on a single fix, Parente recommends a combined approach: combining wet food high in moisture with a healthy, balanced diet (containing natural sources of fiber) can greatly reduce hairball formation. She's clear, though, that this doesn't mean experimenting with home remedies. Do not include any home remedies or oil unless directed by your vet, she cautions.

Why Clipping Double Coats May Cause Other Issues

Clipping double coats doesn't make shedding worse, but it may cause a number of other issues. "It doesn’t necessarily make a dog shed more," Dr. Elden says. "You may just end up with the same shedding, only now the hairs are shorter. The bigger issue is how the coat grows back. The soft undercoat may come in before the longer guard hairs, which can leave the coat looking fuzzy, uneven and more likely to mat. It can take months to grow back, and sometimes it never looks quite the same. Shaving also removes some protection from the sun and heat. Unless there’s a medical reason or severe matting, getting the loose undercoat out is usually a much better move."

Jacki and Aspen are the perfect pair. Jacki lets her bird explore her passions, and in return, receives endless entertainment. The song they're working on right now is Queen of the Night, which even veteran opera singers get a little scared of.

How to Teach Cockatiels Songs

Birds will learn to "sing" all on their own, mostly based on instinct. Birds sing. However, without proper training, their songs are mostly just whatever tunes they pick up on their own, or even ones they make up.

• Starting small: only a few notes, then build up.
• Repeating each section for several days before moving on.

Wild Mane Maine Coons has some of the coolest kittens anywhere in the world, including this mama and her kittens! She's a Black Smoke Maine Coon, which is why she looks a little grey, especially toward her belly. Her kittens match her perfectly!

There are actually two litters of kittens in this video, since the cat is babysitting! Her name is Stormy, and the "stormy" black smoke kittens are hers, while the more solid black kittens belong to her daughter, Luna. She's a grandma! How precious is that?!

Niall Harbison works miracles through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. The animal advocate tends to street dogs with various medical, nutritional, and emotional needs. He often takes dogs who are literally on death's door and rehabilitates them to live their best life.

Rocky is a street dog who was abandoned due to his old age and blindness. Thanks to Harbison and his team, Rocky now has a new leash on life.

Harbison was contacted by a local resident in May to rescue Rocky, who had been deserted due to his poor health. When the precious pooch was brought to the Happy Doggo medical clinic, tests showed he was suffering from blood parasites, skin issues, pressure on his organs, and glaucoma that caused his blindness.

Rocky was in such critical condition, Harbison and his team weren't sure if he would survive. Yet with proper medical care and tons of love and affection, Rocky healed and even flourished.

"Rocky was dumped and left for dead just because he grew old and lost his sight," the caption explained. "When we brought him in, he was so weak, but with good food and lots of love, he fought his way back. He learned to trust our voices and navigate the world in darkness."

Where Is Rocky Now?

Harbison was thrilled with Rocky's progress, but didn't expect many adoption inquiries due to his age and vision issues. Yet wonders never cease at Happy Doggo — Rocky ended up getting his forever family and is truly living his best life.

"Finding a home for an elderly, blind dog felt impossible, but an incredible family stepped up," the story continued as the post showed clips of Rocky in the ocean, playing in the sand, cuddling with his family member, and sleeping peacefully on a cozy couch. "Today, Rocky is safe and living like royalty with people who absolutely adore him."

The transformation from when Rocky first arrived at the sanctuary to him frolicking in his forever home is a testament to the lifesaving work Harbison and his team perform on a daily basis.
