My dogs are used to seeing their reflection in the mirror, but it took some time. When my Dachshund first caught sight of herself, she stared at her image in disbelief. My Pug mix growled at himself in the mirror, then went into full-on bark mode. He assumed the dog looking back at him was barking, which made him bark more. After awhile, they both lost interest in seeing themselves and now it's not a big deal.

Birdie the Golden Retriever puppy had some issues with the dog she saw in the mirror and was ready to rumble.

In the TikTok from @ourgoldengirlbirdie, the precious puppy stood in front of the mirror and repeatedly barked at the image in front of her. Birdie held a strong stance, clearly prepared for any abrupt moves from her "adversary".

At one point, Birdie got brave enough to approach her reflection and give the mirroring dog a sniff. Still, she didn't trust the situation and backed up. Birdie stayed vigilant in case she had to defend herself against this canine she'd never met.

"What is this thing?! Who is that puppy?!" the caption joked.

Followers got a kick out of the fur baby's confusion and noted Birdie's charm.

"Who’s that handsome pup!" one raved.

"It's you, cutie!" another pointed out.

"Ooh look, a new friend," someone posted.

How Dogs React to Their Reflection

Dogs lack self-awareness, so they don’t realize that they are seeing themselves when they see their reflection. They assume it’s another dog and usually bark, stare, growl, or stiffen in response to the sight because they aren't sure if the other fur baby is friend or foe.

Canines gather information through scent, which makes crossing paths with their reflection more confusing. Since they cannot smell the dog in the mirror, they have no way of analyzing their situation or the precious pooch facing them.

After your dog gets more accustomed to seeing their reflection, they will most likely get bored and start ignoring the mirror. Birdie looked quite fascinated with the pup staring back at her, so she may be hanging around that looking glass for a while.

Cats are known for being independent, but every once in a while, one comes along who completely rewrites the rules. One Tabby cat named KeKe is doing exactly that after being caught caring for a group of newborn puppies like they belong to her.

And honestly, she seems pretty convinced that they do.

The adorable clip from the TikTok account @amber_nunnally shows KeKe stretched out in the sunshine with five tiny puppies snuggled up against her.

The caption explains the unexpected moment.

In the video, KeKe looks completely relaxed as the puppies cuddle into her, and at one point, she even starts making biscuits on one of them like a proud, slightly confused mom.

In the background, the human can be heard saying, “KeKe, what are you doing? Those aren’t your babies.”

The puppies, however, do not seem to agree.

As soon as the human questions the situation, the little pups start whimpering and snuggling even closer to KeKe.

Viewers in the comments quickly took KeKe’s side.

Another commenter imagined the actual dog mom’s reaction.

While it might seem unusual, it's not unheard of for cats to show motherly behavior toward animals that are not their own kind.

Cats have strong nurturing instincts, especially females who have had kittens before or are naturally maternal. When they encounter small, vulnerable animals like puppies, those instincts can sometimes kick in.

In some cases, cats will groom, cuddle, and even try to “mother” animals who are not their own, simply because the behavior feels natural to them.

As long as the interaction is supervised and both animals are safe, these cross-species bonding moments can be surprisingly gentle and heartwarming.

And in KeKe’s case, it is pretty clear she has already made up her mind.

Copper the Newfoundland is only about 9 weeks old, and he's already huge. His family has known about him from the moment he was born, and they had to wait the whole time before they could take him home! He went home to several human siblings and a whole lot of love.

He doesn't care, though. The only thing he really seems to care about is his fan. He cared so much, in fact, that his mom said his first errand was actually to Home Depot to get one.

Copper is the only dog in his house, and his human siblings are so in love with him! He's definitely in for the good life! His mom said her kids told her it was "Newfie or nothing," which is a philosophy I might need to adopt. They even got to meet his parents:

Desensitizing a Newfoundland Puppy

Desensitization is important for any puppy, but it's especially vital for giant breeds like the Newfoundland. When they get spooked by something, it can be legitimately dangerous.

Luckily, desensitizing a puppy is relatively easy, and it can start pretty much as soon as they get home. Some common tips include:

• Running the vacuum cleaner.
• Touching their paws and claws often (to make nail trims easier).
• Putting them in front of a fan or a blow dryer on the cool setting (Newfies will need to be blow-dried after their baths).
• Splashing water on them.

Have you ever seen your cat's ears move around, or your kitty run for no particular reason? You may think they're "hearing things," and you may be right. However, the sounds aren't in your cat's head. Dr. Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian with Embrace Pet Insurance, says there are sounds only cats can hear that people can't. "A cat's hearing is more sensitive than a human's is," Dr. Hunt explains. So, how well can cats hear? "Cats are able to detect sounds that are about 10 decibels quieter than humans can hear. This helps cats hear sounds approximately five times farther away than humans can."

In fact, Hunt says that cats have some of the "broadest hearing ranges" in the animal kingdom. "They can hear more ultrasonic sounds—such as those with a higher frequency—than humans," Dr. Hunt reports. "In fact, humans can hear sounds up to about 20,000 Hz and cats can hear sounds up to 85,000 Hz. While cats can hear high-frequency sounds better than humans, they can also still hear low-frequency sounds."

Dr. Hunt adds that a cat's unique ear mobility also contributes to their top-notch hearing making this somewhat odd cat behavior even more impressive. "Cats are able to move their ears to the sides or back, which improves their ability to hear sounds behind them and helps them to localize sounds very accurately," Dr. Hunt says. Because of all of these things, Dr. Hunt reveals that there are weird sounds cats can only hear. Are you curious what those are? Why Do Cats Have Such Great Hearing?

So why did cats evolve to have such a powerful sense of hearing? Cats have such great hearing because it helps them survive and hunt. Being able to detect high-frequency sounds allows them to locate prey like mice and birds, even when hidden. Their rotatable ears help them pinpoint danger or food, giving them an evolutionary advantage in both hunting and avoiding predators.

Can Cats Hear Better Than Dogs?

Cats can hear better than dogs in certain ways, especially when it comes to high-frequency sounds. While dogs can hear sounds ranging from about 67 Hz to 45 kHz, cats can detect noises between roughly 48 Hz and 85 kHz. This means cats can pick up ultrasonic sounds that even most dogs cannot hear.

Cats’ superior hearing is partly due to their highly mobile ears, which Dr. Hunt explains can rotate up to 180° to pinpoint the source of a sound. They also have more auditory cells in their inner ear, which allows them to detect very subtle noises. Dogs, on the other hand, are often better at detecting mid-range sounds and vocal cues, including human voices. So while both cats and dogs have hearing far superior to humans, cats have the edge when it comes to detecting subtle and high-pitched noises.

There are times when animals appear to see or hear things that we humans don't notice at all. This often makes pet owners wonder whether dogs may be seeing ghosts or something paranormal. The truth is, cats can hear higher-frequency sounds, which can help them hunt and also protect themselves. Below, Dr. Hunt reveals five sounds cats can hear that people can't and why.

1. Ultrasonic prey noises

If you're curious if cats can hear ultrasonic sounds, you'll be happy to learn that they can! Kitties can hear high-pitched rodent squeaks and insect noises that are way too high in frequency for the human ear. Dr. Hunt reminds us that cats can hear sounds up to 85,000 Hz—far more than the 20,000 Hz a person's ears can detect.

Dr. Hunt points out that humans can, in fact, hear some prey noises. However, cats can hear them from way further away. "For prey noises that humans can also hear, such as prey squeaks, cats can hear these approximately five times farther away than humans can," Dr. Hunt adds. "Cats are also very good at quickly localizing where sound is coming from. When three feet away from their prey, cats can localize the sound to an area within three inches of the prey. These features of their hearing make them more effective hunters."

2. Electronic interference

What's a sound only cats can hear? high-frequency sounds! Cats have incredibly sensitive hearing and can detect high-frequency sounds, including electronic interference from devices humans can’t hear. "Electronic interference" (high-pitched whines from computer monitors, TVs or even fluorescent lights) are another weird sound cats can hear that people can't hear. These high-frequency sounds may be especially noticeable in houses where someone works from home or where there are multiple electronics running simultaneously. "This means that they can hear high-frequency electronic hums such as those created by computers, TVs, fluorescent lights, LED bulbs and smart home devices," Dr. Hunt says.

A cat's remarkable hearing range allows them to detect these ultrasonic or high-pitched noises, which can sometimes cause stress, anxiety, or alert behaviors in sensitive cats. "A cats’ sensitive hearing is developed to make them more efficient hunters, but it also means they detect sounds that humans can’t, including these electronic buzzing and humming noises.”

3. Long-distance sounds

Cats' hearing truly goes the distance, to the tune of ears that can detect noises five times farther away than people can. "They can hear sounds from up to 0.7 to 1 mile away—or 2,300 to 3,000 feet—depending on the features of the sound," Dr. Hunt says. "This may be beneficial in locating prey or threats to the cat’s safety."

Cats’ long-range hearing is another example of how their ultrasonic sensitivity and keen auditory perception make them uniquely aware of the world around them—hearing things humans can’t even imagine.

4. Your heartbeat/breathing rhythm

Can cats hear your heartbeat? They sure can! "Cats have sensitive hearing and are able to detect sounds that are about 10 decibels quieter than sounds that humans can hear," Dr. Hunt reveals. "A human’s heartbeat and breathing are approximately 10 decibels, although if the cat has contact with the chest wall, these sounds may register up to 30 decibels."

Cats can also hear sounds as quiet as decibels and as low as -10 decibels. "Therefore, it’s likely that they can hear human heartbeats and breathing," Dr. Hunt explains addng that this sound may be soothing to cats.

5. Underground, high-frequency vibrations

If you've ever wondered if cats can detect earthquakes thanks to their hearing, Dr. Hunt says they can. She notes that cats do have highly sensitive hearing that lets them detect subtle underground vibrations and high-frequency sounds that humans can’t perceive, giving them an edge in sensing natural events. "The ground and soil can transmit or amplify sounds, transferring seismic activities into sound waves that can be heard, especially by animals," Dr. Hunt explains. "These high-frequency sounds may sound like roars or rumbles to cats."

This unique ability may give cats an advantage in noticing natural disasters. "This allows cats to sense unusual or increased seismic activity, such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions,” Dr. Hunt says. "This is beneficial, as the cat can attempt to find a safe place to hide." It's no wonder they have nine lives!

The Phoenix Ferals are the cutest little rescue crew ever. Mila, the mama of the bunch, is a Calico cat. She ended up giving birth to 5 kittens before her new mom could get her into the clinic:

• One Tortoiseshell.
• Two black and brown Tabbies.
• One orange Tabby.
• One fully orange female cat.

The babies are all happy, healthy, and will be up for adoption in May. For now, they're hanging out with their mom, and they're being brought up in a loving home. I just know these cats are going to have some attitude to them!

Mila the Cat Needed Help

Though we're not exactly sure how old Mama Mila is, we know that she was found at night in a random parking lot. She's fully feral and was clearly pregnant, and the woman who rescued her works with feral cats for TNVR: Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Release.

In the world of rescue, things don’t always go as planned. When I trapped this pregnant feral cat on Friday night, I was praying she’d make it until I could get her to a clinic Monday morning. But mama Mila had different plans. Within hours, she’d already began labor, and by Monday morning, we already had babies 🥲 As adorable as baby kittens are, it’s hardly ideal to keep a feral mama in captivity as the stress can take a toll on her mental health and how she cares (or doesn’t care) for the babies. But when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade! We are giving Mama Mila lots of human-free alone time and all the food and comfort she’s willing to accept 🩷 It seems like this isn’t her first rodeo, and she’s taken to mothering like a champ 🥹 A few days in, and the little m&m’s are growing like weeds. In May, the babies will go up for adoption through @tubbytabbyrescue, and Mama Mila’s fate is in her own hands. She had planned to take her to the clinic and have her spayed as soon as possible, which would also terminate the pregnancy, but Mila gave birth before that could happen. Apparently, she really wanted those kittens! She's lucky: all of them are happy, healthy, and perfect.

How to Help Feral Cats

Spring is here, and with spring comes so many kittens that it's overwhelming. While you might want to rescue a feral cat and bring them home forever, a lot of them simply won't tolerate that. You need to have other ways to help.

The best way you can help feral cats is by making sure as many of them are vaccinated and spayed/neutered as possible. Not only will that prevent the spread of disease, but it will also help control the population. If you can't trap the cats yourself, reach out to a local shelter/TNVR organization. They provide:

• Vaccinations.
• Spays/spay aborts for pregnant ferals, and neutering.
• In some cases, relocation.

Many organizations work with local farmers/landowners to place them as barn cats. City life is dangerous, especially for feral cats. Luckily, Mila and her babies are safe now!

Cocker Spaniels are known for their furry, floppy ears, but many also have what can best be described as heart-shaped noses. Both of my dogs shamelessly beg whenever anyone has a meal or snack. My Dachshund and my Pug mix will whine, bark, and paw at whoever dares to eat in their presence until they get their share. We've tried training them out of it, though we could have been more consistent. They never give up, even though most of the time, we don't give in.

In the TikTok from @shybunnydachshund, the precious pooch sat next to her mom and barked, clearly upset about something.

"My Mini Dachshund when I won't share my Goodles with her," the onscreen text read.

Apparently, her mom was eating Goodles macaroni and cheese, and Bunny felt she should get a portion. The pup persisted in her quest for her share and made it clear she wasn't backing down.

Bunny dug at her mom's blanket, then stopped and gave her a hard stare. More barking ensued when the Doxie's demands weren't met, and she even waved her paws in the air to express her mounting frustration.

Creed the German Shepherd is just like me. I also start barking when I see someone littering on the ground! He saw the litter on a walk, and he couldn't believe it. He was so upset that someone would do that that he finally broke his vow of silence.

The best part is that barking at it wasn't enough: he ended up going over to it and making sure to tear it up. His mom took it away pretty quickly, but not before he got the last word! That bag will never come around again!

Creed is about 10 weeks old. He typically doesn't bark: when he needs to vocalize, it's mostly whining and crying. He's a good boy, but he's a little bit of a crybaby. Such can be said about 99% of German Shepherds!

Ryder’s story makes his sweet personality even more remarkable. Before landing in his current home, Ryder was found abandoned in a bag in Connecticut. Because of his paralyzed back legs, no one initially wanted to adopt him.

He spent several days in a veterinary emergency hospital, where a team worked to save his life. Despite the challenges he faces, Ryder has adapted in incredible ways. He moves around by dragging his back legs and uses his strong front legs to help him get where he needs to go.

He even climbs the stairs to get into bed using only his front legs.

In the TikTok from @teddysdogs, the precious Pug explored the daycare by dragging her back legs. She mingled a bit with the other dogs, though she couldn't run with the pack due to her disability. But the daycare had something to give her a boost.

"We had a disabled dog join us at daycare, so we did this for her," the onscreent text announced.

The video featured the daycare owner assembling a special doggy wheelchair and placing the Pug in it for a spin. The fur baby stood still for a few minutes, trying to get her bearings in the unfamiliar contraption. But then something kicked in and the peppy Pug was off like a shot, running around on the grassy field with her pooch playmates. She quickly took to the chair like a duck to water.

Nothing could slow down the daring dog as she darted in between her fellow fur babies on the field, who probably had a hard time keeping up with her. She had a new spring in her step and completely embraced her new set of wheels.

What you do during your dedicated time depends entirely on your dog's unique personality and breed-specific needs. “There is a large movement in the dog training community to honor the genetic predisposition of dogs to certain activities and find ways to fulfill that,” Stynchula says. 

For example, Australian Shepherds may prefer something physical that involves herding or agility, while a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may be thrilled to play a short game of fetch around your yard, followed by cuddle time on the couch. You can even look into bigger activities you and your pooch can do together, like agility training classes, or simply set up obstacles in your yard or local park for your dog to do.

However, you don’t need to make massive gestures to have a big impact on your dog’s mental health. At a bare minimum, practicing mindful pet ownership is key. “At a bare minimum, be present with your dog,” Stynchula says. "That includes leaving your phone in your pocket so that you can fully concentrate on your pooch. Spivak has seen this up close, having co-authored more than 15 pet neuroscientific studies.

One study conducted by the Emory Canine Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory examined dogs' brains using MRIs. It found that dogs have a special region of the brain that helps them process people's faces and respond more strongly to scents of familiar humans. According to pet researchers, these long-term bonds are anchored by the olfactory system, allowing a dog to recognize and "remember" their favorite person even after years of separation.

You're going to notice a common theme in Spivak's five signs your dog remembers you even after time apart: They're positive. That's by design. "Dogs often become excited by transitions," he says. "Also, dogs are pack animals that prefer solidarity and consistency in their animal-human pack."

In other words, they value being close to their favorite people and connections. Of course, not all dogs will display each one of these signs that they remember you. Spivak says age, energy level, your previous relationship and comfort level with solo time can all factor in. Still, these behaviors are common in dogs when they're reunited with you.

1. You get the most joyful greeting

If you've spent any time online over the last 20+ years, you've likely come across a video of a dog reuniting with their humans returning from military service. These emotional canine reunions are more than just cute videos, they are a clear sign your dog remembers you and has maintained a deep attachment bond, regardless of the time apart. Spivak says this dog greeting behavior, including vigorous tail wagging and frantic running, is a primary indicator of long-term recognition.

"Jumping is a common dog body language signal in younger or untrained pups," Spivak states. "Yet, because dogs rely on scent recognition and vocal cues to identify their favorite people, even a mature, trained dog may impulsively jump after an owner returns from an extended absence."

2. They sniff you...intensely

Spivak shares that intense sniffing is a primary sign your dog remembers you even after significant time apart. This behavior is rooted in canine olfaction, where a dog uses their powerful sense of smell to re-establish a familiar connection.

"Dogs rarely sniff human or animal housemates when everyone has remained home," Spivak says. "However, when an owner has been away for a lengthy period, sniffing provides vital information. It allows the dog to process scent memory, confirming where the person has been and reinforcing their long-term recognition of that individual."

3. They're very vocal

According to Spivak, a dog’s voice is one of their most powerful tools for expressing long-term recognition. He notes that during a long-awaited canine reunion, many dogs become incredibly vocal, using whines, barks, or whimpers as a clear sign they remember you. This "happy crying" is a physiological response to the release of oxytocin when a dog identifies a familiar loved one.

High-pitched barks are especially common vocal cues in dogs who were already vocal before the separation. This auditory recognition confirms that the dog hasn't just remembered your face, but has maintained a deep emotional attachment to your presence and your specific voice.

4. They follow you everywhere

How Long Does This Behavior Last?

Yet, there's no timetable for a dog to go back to their baseline after your reunion. "The time for a dog to return to 'normal' will vary, principally based upon the dog's temperament," Spivak says.

Birthdays are a joyous occasion, especially when there is cake!

Even if it is cake for humans, that doesn't mean Lady, the Dachshund, isn't going to try to have a bite.

That is exactly what is happening in a new video from Abby Baffoe, who just turned 30 years old.

In the video, she sits on her bed in her pajamas with Lady next to her and lights two candles in the shape of the number 30 on a small birthday cake.

In the caption, she writes, "A new decade 🥹💖 starting off with cake for breakfast 💅 thank you for all the bday wishes I love you guys so much!!!!"

Then we see Lady jumping up next to her mom to try to get a bite of that delicious-looking cake.

Now, for Lady, who also recently had a birthday, she had her own cake and a little steak on the side.

It was a small, exquisite cake with pink icing, a little icing Dachshund holding a tiny martini glass, and it said, “A weenie bit older.”

Her mom also took her on a birthday shopping spree that included a new hot dog toy, a mascara toy, bones, and of course, a new sweater in deer print (very chic this season).

They even got Lady a birthday hat!

The French Bulldog says, "wee, wee" to another year as America's favorite dog breed. Our love for the adorable squishy-faced furballs has not waned in the 4 years since the small breed took over the top spot from the beloved, family-friendly Labrador Retriever.

However, the American Kennel Club's top dog list did see a surprising shake-up in the top five with a long-time favorite dropping from fifth position for the first time in four years. This year, a small breed best known for its tiny legs and elongated body hops into 5th position for the first time since 2003.

French Bulldog is Still The Most Popular Dog Breed View this post on Instagram

Frenchies have such a sweet, friendly disposition that it makes sense that they remain the most popular dog breed in America for 2025. The AKC compiles the list from year-end registration statistics, announcing it to dog fans early the following year. French Bulldogs took the top spot for the first time in 2022, when they ousted the Labrador Retriever, a pup who had held the spot for 31 years.

“While the French Bulldog is a wonderful companion for many, it is not a ‘one size fits all’ breed,” said Gina M. DiNardo, AKC President and CEO, in a press release. “Popularity does not mean it’s right for everyone." Not all dog owners can deal with the the intricases that come with owning a brachycephalic dog like the Frenchie. But those who choose to overlook the possible challenges love the pups for their big personalities and jovial attitudes.

In second place is the beloved family pup, the Labrador Retriever, followed by the equally lovable Golden Retriever in third. I may be a little biased, but a pretty special dog breed sits once again in the number four slot, the loyal, brilliant, and downright goofy German Shepherd.

However, the fifth slot belongs to the poodle no more. This year, the Dachshund jumps up from number 6, sliding into the fifth spot on the list. DiNardo says this spunky pup is one to watch in the years ahead.

"The breed has hovered in the top 10 most popular breeds for many years, and it’s no surprise that it’s back in the top five. Dachshunds are very intelligent, excellent problem solvers, and adorable," said DiNardo. "As with any breed, we can’t stress enough the importance of doing your research to find the right breed for your lifestyle and to ensure that you’re getting a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder.”

Completing the top 10 is the Beagle and Rottweiler, holding on to 7 and 8 from the previous year, while the German Shorthair Pointer moves up one, taking the Bulldog's spot at number 9 and dropping the breed to the 10th slot.

Dog lovers know that pups have various ways of communicating with their humans, from barking and tail wagging to when and how they make eye contact. Another way our furry friends let their humans know what they’re thinking is through their ears. As the dog climbs out of his enclosure, he points his ears straight up. When he reaches his human, he flattens his ears. While the dog’s ear acrobatics may seem like a very cool canine party trick, it’s actually one of the dog’s many ways of communicating with mom and dad. Think of a German Shepherd’s ears like a satellite dish the pup uses to convey emotions like fear, alertness, or friendliness.

We’d hate to speak for this gorgeous German Shepherd, but it’s likely the dog is flattening its ears out of concern that mom or dad will put him in a doggie timeout for his recent great escape. Judging by mom’s reaction to her pup’s antics, this dog has nothing to worry about.
