7 Psychological Benefits of Doing Puzzles, According to a Psychologist

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 2:11pm

Puzzles—they're often thought of as something for little kids and older adults. Brain games can keep a little kid occupied so their caretakers can shower with the door closed, and they can keep an older adult's mind sharp. But one neuropsychologist stresses that people of all ages can reap the psychological benefits of doing puzzles.

"Puzzles are one of those things that are quietly doing a lot more for you than you realize," Dr. Sanam Hafeez, Psy.D., a neuropsychologist and director of Comprehend the Mind, tells Parade. "Your memory, focus and problem-solving are all getting a workout at the same time without it feeling like work."

Dr. Hafeez shares that research suggests that keeping the brain active can slow cognitive decline as you get older.

"The best part about it is that it doesn't feel like a chore," she explains. "It's just something you enjoy doing."

Zooming out, she loves the enjoyment factor of hobbies, more generally.

"Hobbies give your brain something to look forward to, which matters more than people [think]," Dr. Hafeez says. "They pull you out of your own head when stress or worry starts to pile up. There's also a quiet sense of accomplishment that comes from getting better at something you enjoy."

And you can certainly get a sense of accomplishment from completing a jigsaw puzzle or a daily crossword. If they're not currently a go-to hobby, you may be interested in making them one after reading Dr. Hafeez's insights. Scroll on to learn more about the psychological benefits of doing puzzles.

What Are Some Key Types of 'Mental Health Puzzles'?

There are tons of puzzles that can benefit your mental health, and the best one for you is the one you enjoy the most. But Dr. Hafeez loves five types of puzzles for people who need a mental health reset.

  1. Crossword puzzles. Dr. Hafeez says these word-based puzzles require you to fill a grid using clues, so they're great for vocabulary, memory and building general knowledge (Next up: Trivia Night glory).
  2. Sudoku. For the uninitiated, Sudoku is a logic puzzle. There's a grid, and you'll fill it in using numbers 1 to 9. Good news for some: "No math is needed—it's all about pattern recognition and focus," Dr. Hafeez says.
  3. Memory card games. Memory-card games are childhood classics, and sports teams often use them to let fans watching the game in person compete for prizes during breaks in the action. But people of any age can enjoy them at home. "You'll flip cards to find matching pairs while remembering where everything is," Dr. Hafeez explains. "This game directly trains short-term memory and concentration."
  4. Word search. Scan a grid full of letters to pinpoint hidden words running across, diagonally, backward and more. It's a fun riff on hide-and-seek. "Word searches are low-stress but great for attention and visual focus," Dr. Hafeez says.
  5. Logic grid puzzles. Dr. Hafeez says that, to do these puzzles, you'll use clues to figure out how different elements connect. "They require methodical thinking and are excellent for reasoning skills," she explains.

Are There Mental Benefits to Doing Puzzles?

Dr. Hafeez says there are real mental benefits to doing puzzles, sharing, "They push your brain to think critically, recognize patterns and stay focused. all of which strengthen cognitive function over time."

When you regularly engage with a mental activity, Dr. Hafeez says you're less likely to experience a rapid cognitive decline. You're also more likely to have a better memory and improved mood.

"There's also something to be said for the satisfaction of finishing one, which gives you a small but genuine confidence boost," she notes.

That said, puzzles aren't a magic cure, and Dr. Hafeez believes it's worth understanding their limits.

"The brain is good at getting efficient, meaning the more you do the same type of puzzle, the less of a workout it actually becomes," she concedes. "If you're doing the same crossword difficulty every day for years, you're probably more in autopilot than you think. Switching up the type and difficulty level matters a lot if you actually want to keep challenging yourself."

What Type of Person Is Good at Doing Puzzles?

Lots of people can be "good" at doing puzzles. But honestly? Curiosity might matter more than anything else," Dr. Hafeez notes. "People who actually enjoy not knowing the answer yet are the ones who stick with it. It's not really about being smart. It's about being someone who finds the process satisfying rather than annoying."

That being said, she adds that specific types of people often have a natural leg up when solving puzzles.

"Patient people tend to do well with puzzles simply because they're okay with things taking time," she explains. "Logical thinkers have a natural edge too, since a lot of it comes down to eliminating what doesn't work until something does."

Do People With ADHD Like Jigsaws?

They certainly can. "It's actually more common than you'd think—a lot of people with ADHD genuinely enjoy jigsaw puzzles, even if it seems like the kind of quiet, slow activity that wouldn't suit them," says Dr. Hafeez, who regularly sees people with ADHD in her practice.

Some reasons why people with ADHD may love puzzles include:

  • Puzzles let their hyperfocus kick in. Dr. Hafeez shares that people with ADHD have brains that are "wired for hyperfocus when something is visually stimulating enough, and jigsaws can trigger exactly that." She credits the constant visual searching and sorting that keeps the brain busy enough to remain dialed in.
  • They're hands-on. When people with ADHD use their hands, Dr. Hafeez notes, they often perform the task better. Jigsaws provide that opportunity because you have to physically sort, flip and place pieces.
  • Puzzles provide quick, visible progress. People with ADHD can struggle with delayed gratification, but puzzles can provide a quick reward—and added motivation. "Every piece placed is instant, visible proof that you're getting somewhere," she notes.

That said, some people with ADHD may not like jigsaw puzzles. For some, Dr. Hafeez says the middle stretch of the puzzle is "brutal."

"Once the easy edges are done and you're staring at 400 similar-looking pieces, the novelty wears off fast," she notes. "That's usually where ADHD impatience takes over, and the puzzle gets abandoned on the dining room table for two weeks."

7 Psychological Benefits of Doing Puzzles, According to a Psychologist1. You might reduce stress

Daily living gives us plenty of reasons for stress—especially these days. Puzzles provide a reprieve.

"Puzzles pull your focus into one simple task, giving your brain a break from everything else," Dr. Hafeez says. "That kind of quiet concentration actually lowers cortisol levels. It's almost meditative without having to sit still and 'do nothing.'"

2. You could notice an improvement in memory

Forget me not? You may have an easier time remembering names, faces and why the heck you walked into a room if you give puzzles the old college try.

"Puzzles constantly ask your brain to recall shapes, words, patterns and positions," Dr. Hafeez explains. "That repetition strengthens the neural connections involved in memory. Over time, that translates to better recall in everyday life, too."

3. You'll enjoy a mood boost

Dopamine, delivered—without looking at your TikTok or Instagram follower count.

"Every time you place a piece or solve a clue, your brain releases a small hit of dopamine," Dr. Hafeez says. "That feeling of progress, however small, genuinely lifts your mood. It adds up more than people realize."

4. You'll practice patience

It's unlikely you'll complete a 300-page crossword puzzle in one morning or a 1,000-piece puzzle in a sitting. There's a psychological benefit to doing things that don't reward rushing.

"With puzzles, you have to slow down, whether you like it or not," Dr. Hafeez explains. "That teaches your brain to sit with frustration without immediately giving up. It's a surprisingly transferable skill for real life."

5. You'll sharpen your focus

A sharper focus is perhaps the best-known benefit of doing puzzles.

"Puzzles require sustained attention, which is something most people are genuinely losing in the age of scrolling," Dr. Hafeez explains. "Practicing that kind of deep focus regularly actually strengthens your attention span. Your brain gets better at the things you make it do consistently."

For instance, focus can help you improve impulse control, offer mental clarity and hone in on the people and things that matter most, giving you some massive psychological gains.

6. You'll increase self-confidence

Each time you put together a puzzle piece or find a word in a word search, you'll learn that you can do hard things. And when you complete the puzzle? "Finishing something hard gives you proof that you can work through a challenge," Dr. Hafeez notes. "That sounds simple, but it genuinely builds a sense of competence over time. Small wins matter more to your self-esteem than people give them credit for."

7. Encourages mindfulness

Yes, it's a buzzword, but mindfulness matters when it comes to your psychological health, and puzzles are a gateway to it.

"When you're deep in a puzzle, you're not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow," Dr. Hafeez says. "You're just fully in the moment, trying to figure out where that one piece goes. That present-moment focus is basically mindfulness without calling it that."

Jennifer Aniston Posts a 'Think Before You Bang' Hair Regret Gallery — Fans and Sandra Bullock Disagree

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:42pm

Few celebrities have a more storied relationship with their own hair than Jennifer Aniston. She has spent three decades setting trends (perhaps accidentally), and on Thursday she apparently decided to issue a public service announcement about one of them.

The Morning Show star, 57, shared an Instagram post on Thursday, May 14, reflecting on some of her most popular banged looks throughout the years. The actress kicked off her post with a photo of herself with brunette hair and bangs in the film Horrible Bosses, before sharing additional photos of her throughout the 2000s and 2010s with side bangs and curtain bangs.

Alongside a carousel of throwback photos showing her sporting fringe in her various film and television roles, Aniston captioned the post 'Think before you bang,' appearing to issue a gentle warning to anyone considering the cut. The final image in the post drove the point home; a cartoon of a turtle saying it took a hundred years to grow out the style.

View this post on Instagram

Aniston's infamous haircut was courtesy of her longtime stylist Chris McMillan, who previously admitted he was trying to convince her to try something different when he created 'The Rachel.' He acknowledged the look demanded maintenance from the start. 'It's high-maintenance, not a wash-and-go style,' he said. 'You need to blow-dry with a round brush to help define all those flicks.'

Aniston has been candid about that upkeep burden before. During a past appearance on the Graham Norton Show, she described McMillan's creative enthusiasm as something of a mixed blessing. 'He didn't think about, like, 'Oh she's going to have to do this herself. I'm having a great time being creative with this blowdryer.'

Related: Lisa Kudrow Says the 'Friends' Set Had a Dark Side Most Fans Never Knew About

Sandra Bullock quickly defended the hairstyle in the comments, writing simply, 'You wore them best.' Fans piled in to agree, with comments insisting Aniston looks 'amazing in any style.' One commenter summed up the online reaction: 'Jen's hair has been setting impossible standards for decades and somehow still keeps winning.'

Other fans were equally firm in their defense, with one writing, 'LOVE your bangs and I want them too now,' and another adding, 'No because your bangs are goals.'

Aniston launched her haircare brand, LolaVie, in 2021, and that has only deepened the association between her public identity and her hair. Whatever she thinks of the bangs, they clearly belong to the rest of us as much as they ever belonged to her.

4 Michael Jackson Classics Are Suddenly Climbing the Charts Decades Later

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:38pm

Nearly 50 after they first dominated pop radio, several of Michael Jackson’s biggest hits are suddenly climbing the Billboard Hot 100 once again.

For the Billboard Hot 100 dated May 16, Jackson currently has four songs on the chart, led by “Billie Jean” at No. 17, “Human Nature” at No. 29, “Beat It” at No. 32 and “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” at No. 42.

Three of the songs officially re-entered the chart this week, while “Billie Jean” continues climbing after returning to the Hot 100 earlier this month.

The renewed chart surge appears tied largely to the massive success of Michael, the new biopic chronicling Jackson’s rise from child star to global superstar. The film has sparked renewed streaming interest in Jackson’s catalog worldwide, helping push multiple classics back onto the charts simultaneously.

The King of Pop's chart resurgence is extending far beyond the Hot 100 singles chart. On the latest Billboard 200 chart, Jackson’s Number Ones compilation album climbed to No. 6, giving him a top 10 album in every decade since the 1970s.

According to Billboard, Jackson became just the fifth artist ever to achieve that milestone, joining Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and James Taylor. The renewed interest surrounding the Michael biopic has also pushed Thriller back into the top five for the first time since 1984, further proving that Jackson’s catalog remains one of the most commercially powerful in music history decades after its original release.

The biggest performer of Jackson's resurging singles remains “Billie Jean,” which originally spent seven weeks at No. 1 in 1983 and became one of the defining songs of the MTV era. The track also earned one of the week’s biggest streaming gains as audiences continue revisiting Jackson’s Thriller catalog.

“Human Nature,” now back at No. 29, originally peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 in 1983. Over the years, the dreamy synth-pop ballad has become one of Jackson’s most acclaimed songs thanks to its emotional atmosphere and influence on modern R&B and hip-hop.

Meanwhile, “Beat It” re-entered the chart at No. 32. The groundbreaking 1983 hit famously fused rock and pop, aided by Eddie Van Halen’s blistering guitar solo, and spent three weeks at No. 1 during its original chart run.

“Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” returns at No. 42, more than four decades after first launching Jackson’s solo superstardom in 1979. The disco-funk smash became Jackson’s first solo No. 1 Hot 100 hit as an adult artist and helped establish the sound that would define Off the Wall and eventually Thriller.

The resurgence spans multiple eras of Jackson’s career. Few artists have managed to return so many catalog hits to the Hot 100 simultaneously decades after their original release.

The renewed success also highlights the enduring power of Jackson’s music across generations. While nostalgia spikes tied to movies are common, Jackson’s catalog continues performing at a level rarely seen for legacy artists.

The biopic stars Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, and follows Jackson’s rise from his Jackson 5 beginnings through the height of his solo superstardom.

For longtime fans, the chart comeback is another reminder of just how massive Jackson’s music remains. And for younger listeners discovering songs like “Beat It” and “Human Nature” for the first time, the resurgence may be introducing a whole new generation to one of pop music’s most influential catalogs.

The Dietitian-Approved Starbucks Matcha Order You Need To Try

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:25pm

Matcha is having a major moment right now, and honestly…as a registered dietitian, I’m here for it. This earthy, vibrant drink has taken over coffee shops across the country for good reason: it’s delicious, energizing and packed with antioxidants. And unlike coffee, it delivers a smoother, more sustained energy boost without the jitters.

But if you've ever ordered a standard Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte and wondered why it tastes so sweet, you're not imagining it—the classic version is loaded with sugar.

As a registered dietitian, I want my matcha to taste great and make me feel good (aka not leaving me with a sugar spike before 9 a.m). And with so many people looking for ways to enjoy their favorite drinks without the blood sugar crash, it's worth knowing exactly what's in your cup. That's why I love this lighter order inspired by @lazymillionaire, which gives you all the flavor, with way less sugar.

These small swaps make a big difference, and there's zero barista training or matcha-whisking skills required. Once you try it, you may never go back to the original.

The Best Matcha Order at Starbucks, According to a Dietitian

Here’s my go-to matcha order that I’ve been recommending to everyone lately:

Grande Iced Matcha Latte with:

  • Water instead of milk
  • Sugar-free vanilla syrup
  • No classic syrup
  • Splash of your milk of choice

Think of it like a "matcha Americano" since we’re using water instead of milk. This lets the drink become more matcha-forward and gives you a bolder, more authentic flavor than the classic latte. It's still creamy and satisfying thanks to the splash of milk, just way less sweet.

One heads up: since you can't swap milk for water in the Starbucks app, you'll need to order this one in person. It's worth the extra step, though, I promise.

Related: We Asked 3 Cardiac Experts About the Best Dinner for Heart Health and They All Said the Same Thing

Estimated Nutrition Breakdown

The standard Iced Matcha Latte typically has around 160 calories and 25 grams of added sugar in a grande—all from the classic syrup. Swapping out the milk for water and skipping the classic makes a huge difference. Here's how this customized order breaks down (using skim milk for the calculations):

  • ~25–30 calories
  • ~1–2g sugar (no added sugars, this is naturally occurring sugar from the lactose in the dairy milk)
  • ~2–3g protein
  • ~80mg caffeine

Related: ‘I’m a Cardiologist—This Is the One Snack I Always Have on Hand To Keep My Blood Pressure Down’

3 Reasons Why I Love This Order as a Dietitian1. It leans into matcha's health benefits

Matcha isn’t just a pretty powder. It’s rich in antioxidants called catechins, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which research shows may help reduce inflammation and support heart health. Matcha also contains a unique amino acid called L-theanine, which works alongside caffeine to promote calm, focused energy without the jittery spike you sometimes get from coffee.

2. It cuts sugar without cutting flavor

The standard Iced Matcha Latte at Starbucks contains classic syrup, which brings the total sugar up to 25 grams in a grande. That's already at the American Heart Association's daily recommended limit for women (25 grams) and over half the limit for men (36 grams)—just from your morning drink. By skipping the classic syrup and swapping in sugar-free vanilla syrup, you still get subtle sweetness while bringing the added sugar down to zero.

3. It’s a gentler caffeine boost

With roughly 80 mg of caffeine from the matcha powder, this drink gives you a calm energy boost. The L-theanine in matcha also works alongside caffeine, with research suggesting the combo may give you a cleaner energy boost, without the jitters. It’s a great option if you’re sensitive to coffee or just want something a little lower in caffeine later in the day.

Related: Here’s Exactly What Happens to Your Body When You Drink Matcha Every Day

Tips for Ordering
  • Order in person: Since water isn’t an option under the “milk” drop-down on the app, you’ll have to order this drink in person.
  • Want it creamier? Instead of water, keep the original milk. Just be sure to still remove the classic syrup pumps if you don’t want it sweet.
  • Want more protein? Add your favorite protein cold foam on top. All flavors deliver 17-18 grams of protein, but keep in mind they also add 240-280 calories and anywhere from 3-22 grams of sugar, depending on the flavor. Sugar-free vanilla or plain (unflavored) is your best bet for keeping it light.
  • Want it a bit sweeter? Ask for 2-3 pumps of sugar-free vanilla syrup instead of one.

A Starbucks matcha latte can be a super refreshing summer beverage, and with a few simple swaps, you can turn it into something that aligns with your wellness goals. Use water instead of milk, skip the classic syrup and add sugar-free vanilla syrup.

You're left with a lighter, better-for-you matcha that still tastes like a treat. Just be sure to pair it with a protein and fiber-rich breakfast to round out your morning.

Trader Joe’s Debuted This New Limited-Time Sweet Treat Just in Time for America’s 250th Birthday

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:22pm

America is celebrating its 250th birthday this summer, and that means a slew of red, white, and blue merch is about to hit a retailer near you. Trader Joe’s shoppers can get an early preview of all the July 4th holiday hoopla. The much-adored grocery store just dropped a new limited-time sugary snack, and it packs a patriotic punch.

Trader Joe’s Red, White, and Blue Cookie Bites just hit store shelves. Unlike refrigerated dough, this confection is completely shelf-stable, making it the perfect addition to your list of pantry staples. And you won’t get that doughy, squishiness here. This sweet has a snap to it.

So what can you expect from this tiny treat? As the name implies, this new addition to TJ’s seasonal lineup is red, white, and blue. The trio of boldly-hued balls (courtesy of vegetable juice, spirulina, and annatto extract instead of chemicals and artificial colors) has a vanilla cookie center and either a cherry, lemon, or raspberry candy coating.

What Do Shoppers Think About Trader Joe’s New Treat?

The reviews are starting to pour in, and they’re, at best, mixed. As TJ’s shoppers know, the Trader Joe’s subreddit is a goldmine of info on new, seasonal, and fan favorite products. After trying this treat out (we’ll give it a solid seven for the not-overly-sugary flavor and kinda’ crunchy texture), we took a look at what Redditors had to say about this brand-new buy.

One Reddit user nailed their review, aptly describing the Red, White, and Blue Cookie Bites, “Reminds me of blueberry, cherry, and lime flavored malt balls with a cookie-like center instead of the typical chocolate coating.” And another TJ’s shopper played up the patriotic angle, “They taste like freedom, which tastes like Fruity Pebble malt balls.”

Of course, the reviews weren’t all positive. Another Redditor wrote, “Didn’t like them at all. I thought they tasted like Flintstones vitamins.” Other shoppers seemed to agree that this isn’t the best the store has to offer, with one writing, “One of the few sweets from TJs I tried to finish and didn’t finish. They’re just kind of off.”

Not sure if you’re willing to spend $4.99 on the 10-ounce tub? Try them. Don't try them. Or, be a bit daring and fill your cart with some of Trader Joe’s other brand-new buys.

Other May arrivals include a rich creamy Whipped Ricotta Cheese, frozen Potato Cheese Sticks (these really deserve a spot in your freezer), Passion Fruit Orange Guava Juice (it’s perfect for making summertime mocktails and cocktails), a decadent Lemon Tiramisu, Garlic Shrimp Chips, and Vanilla Mascarpone. FYI, if you’re already on a red, white, and blue Independence Day kick, Trader Joe’s Raspberry, Vanilla, and Blueberry Macarons are back in stock right now!

Nancy Guthrie Update: Sheriff Nanos Offers Reality Check on Investigation Timeline

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:20pm

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is addressing why the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains unsolved. In a new interview, he acknowledged public frustration over the lack of answers but said the case requires a careful and thorough approach as it continues to develop.

“Nobody wants to make a false arrest. Nobody wants to falsely accuse somebody,” Nanos told People. "At some point in time, someday we may have somebody in a courtroom that deserves his or her right to have a fair and impartial trial. The way you get that is through a fair and impartial investigation."

"There’s frustration because people want to know [what happened]," he continued. "But this is just like any other case. Sometimes you solve them within hours or days. Sometimes it takes a long time."

Guthrie has been missing since Feb. 1. Investigators believe that she was abducted from her home in the overnight hours, though it's unclear who took her and for what reason. Nanos has asked that anyone with information come forward as any tip—big or small—could help break the case wide open.

"We still get calls, we still get tips,” Nanos told People. "Even if the tip is from last night, 102 days later, because it might be somebody calling saying, ‘Somebody in this neighborhood doesn’t look right.’ We tell our folks here in Pima County: if you see something suspicious to you, call us."

Anyone with information pertaining to the case is asked to call the FBI (1-800-CALL-FBI).

1958 Film That Inspired a Bruce Springsteen Cover 20 Years Later Ranked Among Best Rock Movies

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:11pm

As this year’s graduating classes walk the stage and turn their tassels, there’s no better time to revisit the glory days of high school. And for classic rock fans, few movies capture the teenage experience quite like High School Confidential!

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

A campy 1958 cult classic devoted to rock ’n’ roll energy, juvenile delinquency, and an unforgettable performance from Jerry Lee Lewis, the film was recently named the best rock movie of 1958 by Ultimate Classic Rock. Here’s why.

Released June 13, 1958, the film stars Russ Tamblyn, Jan Sterling, John Drew Barrymore, and Mamie Van Doren, with Lewis appearing as himself. It follows the transfer student Tony Baker as he sniffs out the drug scene at Santa Bella High, where rich teens are hooked on marijuana cigarettes (hey, it’s the ’50s). But what kicks off as a cautionary tale ends up being a showcase for Lewis’s explosive rock ‘n’ roll performance.

“Once again, the ties between rock 'n' roll and juvenile delinquency were depicted on film,” UCR writes, noting that the opening scene of the film features Lewis performing the title track from the bed of a moving truck with a flock of teenagers following close behind.

Capturing the raw energy and rebellious spirit of the early rock ‘n’ roll scene at the height of the genre’s cultural panic, High School Confidential! became one of the earliest films to fully embrace rock music as its identity. And that opening scene is widely considered one of the most iconic intros in early rock cinema.

Produced by Albert Zugsmith and directed by Jack Arnold, the movie was a hit at the box office, bringing in $2 million against a $6,000 budget. Its success was boosted by Lewis’ track, which became a Top 40 Billboard hit.

Though critical reviews were mixed, the film’s camp and sensationalism helped build a devoted cult following — including one very famous fan: Bruce Springsteen, who liked the title track so much he recorded his own version 20 years later, performing it live for the first time with E Street Band during the Darkness tour of summer 1978.

1968 Classic Film With Iconic Songs Ranked Among ‘Greatest Rock and Roll Movies’ of All Time

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:06pm

Among the countless music documentaries produced over the decades, only a select few stand as true cinematic milestones. That is the legacy of this 1968 masterpiece, which overcame network rejection and a lackluster box office performance to become a defining work in the genre.

In 2019, Consequence ranked the 50 greatest rock and roll movies, compiling a list of the best films that incorporate the beloved genre through both soundtrack and plot. Ranked among classics such as Alan Arkush’s 1979 film Rock ‘n’ Roll High School at No. 25 and Alan Parker's 1991 film The Commitments at No. 23, D.A. Pennebaker’s 1968 documentary Monterey Pop secured the No. 24 spot.

Released in the U.S. on December 26, 1968, Monterey Pop was initially a box office failure. Upon its limited theatrical rollout, the film brought in only about $1,500. Despite famously being rejected by ABC for a a planned television broadcast due to its radical content, the film persevered, building a cult following from glowing word-of-mouth reviews.

Monterey Pop provided groundbreaking, in-depth coverage of the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival. The film perfectly captured the spirit of the late '60s counterculture while offering stunning, first hand looks at the festival's historic sets. By utilizing immersive, cinéma vérité-style camera work with no voiceover narration, Pennebaker placed audiences in the front row of legendary performances by artists like The Who and Jimi Hendrix. The intentional cinematography allowed viewers to experience raw crowd reactions and lively stage presence from the comfort of their theater.

Some of the greatest moments in the film featured iconic hits that set the tone for the documentary. Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" served as the opening track, immediately immersing audiences in the festival's hippie roots. The Mamas & the Papas also had a major showcase with "California Dreamin'," spotlighting the West Coast folk-rock explosion that defined the era.

To this day, Monterey Pop remains one of the most critically recognized musical documentary films in cinema history. On Rotten Tomatoes, the picture holds an 89% audience score and 96% critic score, affirming its status as a legendary testament to the power of rock and roll.

Aldi's Colorful 4-Pack of Lidded Tumblers Are Perfect For Stylish Summer Sipping

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:05pm

Not to get all, "Well back in my day...," on you with tales from the '80s, but, seriously, hasn't 😋😋SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter🍳🍔 come such a long way? Forget the oversized 40-ounce tumblers for a minute (though they are amazing), and just focus on the simple lidded can-style glasses that have kind of taken over our kitchen cabinets.

The trend didn't just randomly appear out of nowhere, it really started with the rise of iced coffee culture and our collective obsession with making everyday drinks feel a little more aesthetic. The actual can-shaped glass design was inspired by classic beer can glasses, but things really shifted when small shops on Etsy and social media creators started giving them a glow-up with bamboo lids, reusable glass straws and cute custom designs. It gave your morning cold brew a whole new vibe.

Crofton 4 Pack Ombre Can Glasses, $6.99 at Aldi Aldi's Crofton 4 Pack Ombre Can Glasses

Aldi

Never ones to shy away from a trend, Aldi is selling the prettiest four-pack of ombre can glasses with matching bamboo lids and straws for $6.99. That's roughly $1.75 per glass which makes for a pretty sweet deal. The glasses come in blue, pink, yellow and orange—just a really lovely assortment of colors (not to mention making it easier not to mix up your glass with someone else's).

As cute as these can glasses are, they're really meant for cold drinks only. Most are made from standard glass that can be sensitive to sudden temperature changes, so pouring in hot coffee or tea could cause cracking or even shattering. The bamboo lids also don’t love heat or excess moisture, which can lead to warping over time. Ultimately, they're perfect for iced lattes, cold brew or matcha, but for anything steaming, it's definitely smarter (and safer) to reach for a mug.

Head to Aldi right now for all kinds of seasonal finds, particularly fun stuff for your patio or outdoor space. There are the sweetest little fairy garden solar lights that add whimsy anywhere, and don't even get me started on the portable hammock chair for easy summer relaxing. It jut feels like Aldi is looking out for everything ahead of the warm weather season to make sure you have just what you need to enjoy yourself.

Bill Maher Says Trump Fell for China’s ‘Red Carpet’ Treatment in Brutal Monologue

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 1:03pm

Bill Maher is once again taking aim atDonald Trump, and this time it’s over the president’s recent visit to China.

During the Friday, May 15, episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the comedian delivered a lengthy monologue mocking Trump’s trip to Beijing and joking that Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to win the president over with spectacle and ceremony, per multiple outlets.

“I can just tell they’re better now. I ordered take out today [and] the menu said go ahead, make some substitutions,” Maher joked while discussing U.S.-China relations. He suggested the summit largely avoided difficult political issues, instead becoming what he portrayed as a carefully staged display designed to flatter Trump.

“Our two countries have a lot of issues between them,” Maher said. “But it seemed like in this summit they were mostly avoided. No demands except: you have to try these dumplings.”

He also poked fun at Trump’s praise of Xi throughout the visit, joking, “Trump says with Xi there’s no games with him. It’s getting a little weird, at one point Xi told his translator: tell Trump don’t catch feelings.”

Much of Maher’s criticism centered around the pageantry of the trip, arguing that China understood exactly how to appeal to Trump’s personality. “China knows what Trump likes. What does he like? He likes the pomp, and the parades, and he likes the red carpet,” Maher said.

Trump also addressed comments he made earlier that day about not considering Americans’ financial situations while negotiating with Iran. Speaking to Fox News, Trump doubled down on earlier remarks in which he said his primary concern was preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, rather than the potential economic impact the conflict could have domestically.

Maher has increasingly used his HBO platform to criticize what he sees as political spectacle and presidential overreach. Earlier this year, he also sparked headlines after calling the State of the Union address a “stupid, boring, performative after-dinner speech from hell,” arguing the tradition makes presidents appear “like a king.”

"That was kind of tough to deal with. Yeah, I mean, at home it’s in a much better place. It’s easier to come out to work when everything at home lines up. Everything’s a lot better. Sarah Michelle Gellar Has Strong Opinions on Which '90s Trends Should Stay in the Past

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 12:41pm

Sarah Michelle Gellar's biggest hits came out in the '90s. She was that girl inBuffy the Vampire Slayer, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, and Cruel Intentions. But even though she was one of the era's biggest stars, Gellar recently admitted that she is not a fan of the "Mom, what were you like in the ’90s?" trend that took over TikTok and Instagram in recent months.

While chatting with Glamour about her Olay Regenerist endorsement, Gellar got on the topic of '90s trends, sharing that there are some she really didn't enjoy while admitting to one that she never let go of. All the while, the latest addition to the Ready or Not 2 cast defended the era, saying, "By the way, the ’90s were cool AF."

View this post on Instagram

Indeed, the '90s were quite a time to be alive, but the decade had its disappointments too. For example, Gellar pointed out the thin eyebrow trend that had ladies plucking or waxing their eyebrows down to nearly nothing. The other downside is that, for many, those lush brows never fully grew back.

"I don’t want overtweezed eyebrows back," Gellar confessed. "We all look better with an eyebrow."

Another trend she is not on board with, despite it unfortunately making a rebound recently, is choker necklaces. She quipped, "And I don’t get the choker thing. It just cuts your neck off. It looks like you’re a weird bobblehead. I am not a choker girl. Those are my two."

When it comes to '90s style trends that Gellar never gave up, she shared, " Thank God for Love Story bringing back slip dresses. I never stopped wearing them."

To that, we'd have to ask, did slip dresses ever go out of style? There's no question that they were huge in the '90s, but they never really left. Now, the simple, body-skimming style is rebounding in popularity, proving to be a classic minimalist piece that can be styled several different ways.

'80s Star and Cult-Classic Leading Man Cancels Tour: ‘I Don't Think It's Fair’

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 12:38pm

Kiefer Sutherland is an '80s film icon, known for his roles in coming-of-age films like Stand by Me and cult classics like The Lost Boys. He's still making movies, too, along with music, having recently released his fourth album, Grey.

To promote the new music, Sutherland was scheduled for a US leg of his Love Will Bring You Home tour in June and July 2026, kicking off in Patchogue, New York, and ending with a show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unfortunately, those shows have now been canceled after Sutherland was unable to drum up enough ticket sales to fill his venues. On Friday, May 15, the actor, who plays a blend of Americana, country, and classic rock, shared the news with fans with an Instagram post on his official account, with a caption that read, "See kiefersutherland.com for all upcoming gigs."

🎬SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬

The post itself was just words and read, "With great disappointment, I am going to have to cancel the US leg of my tour due to very low ticket sales. I don't think it's fair to the people who have bought tickets, or the venues, to play to half empty houses."

He continued, "I look forward to touring the United States again at a more suitable time. I hope you understand. Sincerely, Kiefer Sutherland. (Refunds will be available from point of purchase)."

Sutherland's cancellation news mirrored a message shared from another group recently forced to cancel the US leg of their tour for the same reason. Less than two weeks ago, The Pussycat Dolls dropped all but one date from the US leg of their tour because of lackluster ticket sales.

Other bands, including the Psychedelic Furs, Living Colour, Zayn Malik, Post Malone, Meghan Trainor, and Dolly Parton, have canceled several US shows for various reasons.

Not everyone has a large backyard to work with, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still grow a thriving garden this season. Whether you’re starting small with herbs or carving out space for vegetables and flowers, the right setup can make gardening feel a lot more manageable.

If you’ve been looking for a compact raised garden bed that fits comfortably on a patio, balcony, or in a tight backyard corner, this Amazon find is worth a closer look — especially while it’s currently on sale. Right now, the Giantex Wood Raised Garden Bed with a built-in folding potting table is just $40, down from $60, making it one of the standout gardening deals we’ve seen this season. Its compact design is well-suited for small spaces like patios, balconies, and tinier backyards.

The planter box measures 25 inches wide, though larger 32-inch and 48-inch options are also available if you need more growing space. Since it’s elevated on legs, it reduces the need to bend or kneel while planting and caring for your plants, which is beneficial for anyone with back or knee pain. That extra height can also help keep small animals from easily getting to your harvest.

A slatted bottom panel with drainage gaps helps excess water flow through instead of pooling, supporting healthier roots and more consistent plant growth over time. It’s crafted from natural fir wood, which gives it a rustic look, but you can paint it if you prefer a different look.

The foldable side table is the standout feature. Flip it open when you need a surface for potting soil, seedlings, or tools, then fold it back down when you're done. One Amazon shopper noted it was "easy to assemble," which is a bonus for anyone who just wants to get straight to planting.

Melissa Gilbert Shares Emotional Update About Loving Life ‘Even When It’s Hard’ Amid Timothy Busfield's Legal Woes

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 12:07pm

Melissa Gilbert is showing off her resilience during what is seemingly an especially emotional chapter in her life.

The Little House on the Prairie star returned to Instagram over the weekend with a makeup-free selfie and an encouraging caption, pushing her followers to keep moving forward, even when life feels difficult.

“Ok @officialmodernprairie so many women posted photos on our app, I’ll accept the challenge and bring it here to IG,” Gilbert, 62, wrote on Saturday, May 16, alongside an early morning photo of herself fresh faced with zero filters.

View this post on Instagram

“This is me. No makeup. Early morning. Jammies. No filter,” she continued before adding, “Definitely getting into the picture of my life today. So much more to come.” the actress also included several hashtags in the post, including “#KeepMovingForward,” “#NeverGiveUp” and “#LoveLifeEvenWhenItsHard.”

The actress tagged Modern Prairie, the lifestyle brand and online community she co-founded for women over 50. Just days earlier, Gilbert teased that “something BIG is coming” for the brand as she officially returned to her personal Instagram account for the first time since January.

The recent social media activity comes amid legal troubles surrouding her husband Timothy Busfield. Busfield, 68, was indicted earlier this year on four felony counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor connected to alleged incidents in 2022 and 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Gilbert has publicly continued standing by her husband throughout the legal proceedings. In a previously submitted court letter, she described Busfield as “my love, my rock, my partner in business and life” and called him “the beating heart of our wild and wonderful extended family.”

She also acknowledged the emotional toll the situation has taken, writing, “This is the strangest letter I’ve ever had to write. Please, please, take care of my sweet husband.”

Notably, Gilbert has disabled comments on both of her recent Instagram posts.

1970 Classic Film, Originally Rejecting ’60s Rock Band, Ranked Among ‘Best Movie Soundtracks’ of All Time

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 11:35am

While some films are celebrated for their groundbreaking cinematography and storytelling, others possess a soundtrack so iconic that it defines the movie's entire legacy.

In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked the 101 greatest movie soundtracks of all time, curating a list of cinema's finest scores. Ranked among films such as Tim Burton's 1989 film Batmanat No. 86 and Harmony Korine’s 1990 film Kids at No. 90, Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 classic Zabriskie Point secured the No. 87 spot.

Released in the U.S. on Feb. 9, 1970, Zabriskie Point was a massive box office failure. The movie only grossed $1 million against a $7 million budget, resulting in a significant financial loss for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Along with its commercial flop, critics slammed the film upon release, considering it clumsy and a misrepresentation of American youth.

Despite the harsh reviews, the film grew a passionate cult following over time due to its visually stunning desert imagery and phenomenal soundtrack. Antonioni commissioned several legendary musicians for the project, most notably Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead, both of whom wrote original material for the film. Other popular artists such as The Youngbloods, Kaleidoscope, John Fahey and Patti Page were also featured.

Famously, Antonioni rejected the iconic psychedelic rock band The Doors, turning down their song submission after deciding their sound was too overpowering for his vision. The talent ultimately chosen for the movie shaped a cohesive soundscape that amplified the project's nostalgia factor, creating a perfect time capsule of the late '60s counterculture scene.

Zabriskie Point follows a rebellious college student fleeing a false accusation that he killed a police officer during a campus riot. While on the run, he encounters a young woman in Death Valley, and the two form a romantic connection. Throughout the film, the pair explores themes of anti-capitalism and youthful rebellion within a temporary desert oasis, away from the pressures of a conforming society.

Today, Antonioni's film remains a resonating work within its cult audience. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a 74% audience score—an impressive feat for a project that initially failed so spectacularly. Its enduring popularity and dedicated fanbase attest to its ability to stand the test of time.

1976 Boxing Film's Star Just Recalled Being Told He'd Lose Best Picture Before His Stunning Oscar Win

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 11:18am

Sylvester Stallone never thought Rocky was going to win.

The 79-year-old actor opened up about being warned by industry insiders that he had no shot at Best Picture at the 1977 Oscars. The piece marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic 1976 boxing film.

The Warning Before the Oscars

"You're new in this town. First of all, your screenplay is never going to win," Stallone recalled being told ahead of the ceremony. "You're not winning Best Picture either, because Network is going to win."

Network, the Paddy Chayefsky media satire, was widely tipped as the Best Picture frontrunner. It won four Oscars that night, including Best Actor for the posthumously honored Peter Finch and Best Actress for Faye Dunaway. But the top prize went to Rocky, beating out Network, Taxi Driver, Bound for Glory, and All the President's Men.

"When we won, I was so stunned, I just went, 'Oh my god,'" Stallone exclaimed. "If I wasn't holding onto the chair, I probably would've just done a back flip."

Why It Hit

Stallone's theory on why Rocky connected, post-Vietnam and post-Watergate: "People were looking for something life-affirming."

The film was written in three days in March 1975, shot in 24 days in Philadelphia, and made on a budget of under $1 million. It grossed $225 million worldwide, the top-grossing film of 1976. Director John G. Avildsen also won Best Director.

Stallone's reaction to his sudden stratospheric rise was less straightforward than it looked from the outside. "The good news is, I've peaked, and the bad news is, I've peaked," he said.

What's Coming for the 50th

Rocky returns to theaters in a remastered 4K edition Nov. 7–11.

The Stallone biopic I Play Rocky, starring Anthony Ippolito and directed by Peter Farrelly, hits theaters Nov. 20, just before the film's true 50th anniversary on Nov. 21.
