Bella Hadid’s Ex Adan Banuelos Arrested Days After Split — What We Know So Far
Bella Hadid’s ex Adan Banuelos is having a bit of a rotten day.
Hours ago, the Mexican-American cowboy and award-winning performance-horse trainer was arrested in Texas for public intoxication, E! News reported. According to Parker County Jail records, the horseback-riding champ has since been released after posting a minor $386 bond.
TMZ published images of Banuelos’s mug shot; he can be seen with a glossed-over expression and jailbird stripes. According to the outlet, details about the Friday night that landed him behind bars have yet to surface, but Banuelos was spotted at the 4YO Open Derby at the Bosque Ranch Winter Back last night.

In 2023, Hadid moved from her family’s farm in Pennsylvania to a ranch in Texas, which her mom, Yolanda Hadid, was building with her husband.
“They were basically like, ‘Just come. You can ride, sleep, tap out. You just can’t be alone,’” she told British Vogue last year. “So I go. I’m with my stepdad. We move cows, we’re on trail rides, and I’m starting to feel a little better, but just still dealing with my own stuff. Then, the next day, I meet my boyfriend.”
Neither Bella Hadid, nor Banuelos have commented on their split or Banuelos’s arrest.

Why Starbucks Is Losing Ground to Rivals Great and Small
Despite reports that the price of your favorite cup of coffee is steadily on the rise, with Toast putting the increase at approximately 3.4%, that's not stopping most people from heading to their local coffee shop. According to the National Coffee Association, more American adults drink coffee than any other beverage, up 7% from 2020. While that may seem like excellent news for Starbucks, which has more coffee shops in the U.S. than any other, competition is fierce.
According to food industry consulting firm Technomic, Starbucks' share of customers' spending in U.S. coffee shops is currently 48%, down from 52% in 2023. Starbucks' rival, Dunkin', on the other hand, has seen an increase in its share of the coffee market. However, for those thinking this is just a battle between Starbucks and Dunkin', think again.
Small- to mid-sized coffee companies have grown in volume over the past decade. While their numbers may be nowhere near Starbucks' 17,000 or Dunkin's 10,000 U.S. stores, their growth still takes a bite out of the large corporations' profits.
Scooter's Coffee, which started in Nebraska in 1998, had 200 stores in 2019. It now has 890 locations across 29 states. The Arkansas-based 7 Brew operated just 14 shops in 2019. It announced the opening of its 600th store in Dec. 2025. Other chains are also adding more stores, like Dutch Bros., Luckin Coffee, Mixue, and Blue Bottle. Even fast food restaurants like McDonald's are adding more coffee drinks to their menus.
“People haven’t fallen out of love with Starbucks, but they’re now polyamorous in their coffee choices,” Chris Kayes, chair of the department of management at the George Washington University School of Business, told the Associated Press. “People are now experimenting with other coffees, and they’re seeing what’s out there.”
Starbucks' chairman and CEO, Brian Niccol, has launched a plan that he hopes will lure customers back to Starbucks, which he calls "Back to Starbucks." Part of that strategy includes adding 25,000 seats across stores, encouraging customers to gather and meet.
“My experience tells me that when we get back to our core identity and consistently deliver a great experience, our customers will come back," Niccol said.

'Days of Our Lives' Teases DiMera Legacy Clash
A funeral sets the stage for a powerful conversation about blood, legacy and family on Days of Our Lives next week, according to the show’s latest promo.
In the weekly promo released on the series’ official YouTube channel, viewers see E.J. DiMera’s (Dan Feuerriegel) reacting to the news that his son Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman) and daughter-in-law Chanel DiMera (Raven Bowens) are expecting a baby.
“The baby she's carrying, is a DiMera,” E.J. joyfully exclaims to his son in the weekly preview.
Johnny pushes back, reminding his father that blood alone does not define family. “The son I already have is a DiMera,” Johnny tells him.
The Story So FarJohnny and Chanel’s journey towards parenthood has been complicated. In a previous storyline, Chanel lost a pregnancy after being trapped in an ice storm. Doctors later warned her that future pregnancies could pose serious health risks, advising her not to conceive again for a period of time.
The couple later turned to adoption and became attached to the idea of raising a baby believed to be the child of Johnny’s cousin Tate Black (Leo Howard) and Sophia Choi (Rachel Boyd).
Johnny eventually withdrew from the process after learning new details around his own conception, creating tension and uncertainty for everyone involved.
It was later revealed that Tata was not the baby’s biological father. After time and reflection, Johnny recommitted to adoption, and he and Chanel were ultimately awarded custody of that child, whom they named John “Trey” DiMera, in honor of Johnny’s late grandfather John Black (Drake Hogestyn).
More recently, Chanel learned she is pregnant again. Despite the increased health risks discussed in the storyline, she has decided to carry the pregnancy to term.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Boatman and Bowens would be exiting their roles. Due to Days of Our Lives’ advance production schedule, their scenes are expected to continue airing through 2026 and potentially into 2027.

The One Supplement Pharmacists Say People Take Incorrectly the Most Often
Confession time: While I wouldn’t call myself an avid supplement-popper, I'm probably too lax about taking them. The bottles include some great-sounding promises for my health, and they aren’t the same as “medicine,” right? Plus, they're natural, so there’s nothing to worry about. Or so I thought until recently.
If you've had a similar line of thinking about this topic, it’s time for a rude awakening for both of us. According to pharmacists, supplements can be taken incorrectly and unsafely, resulting in negative health consequences. They shouldn’t be taken like candy, nor do we need to take all the supplements lining the aisles of the drugstore.
The possible dangers of supplements have become evident in recent research. For example, the American Heart Association found that melatonin is linked to a higher risk of heart failure, which is (obviously) pretty scary stuff.
Supplement-related concerns extend to another common supplement, too. Pharmacists say it’s often taken in the wrong way, or when it’s not needed, and the health effects are real. That holds even though roughly 25 percent of Americans are deficient in the mineral. For expert-backed insight and safer alternatives, keep reading.

In our wellness-focused society, you may (for better or worse) feel pushed to take lots of supplements, including iron. No shame here, but knowing the risks is important.
“Social media plays a huge role in this, with ads everywhere promoting iron and iron supplements as harmless energy boosters, leading to self-treatment without proper diagnosis,” says Dr. Kelsey Goderwis, PharmD, the pharmacy manager for Kroger Health.
The fact that some people need more iron is valid. Iron deficiency is the most common form of nutritional deficiency, according to the CDC. It can contribute to many less-than-enjoyable symptoms, too, such as hair loss, brittle nails, restless legs, feeling depressed, getting sick more often, trouble concentrating, dizziness, pica and more.

However, that doesn’t mean an iron supplement is the answer, especially for everyone. In fact, those symptoms may not even be from low iron levels. It’s probably fair to say this is widely misunderstood, and here’s why: According to Dr. Shannon Fitzgerald, PharmD, a toxicologist and pharmacist who contributes to Drugwatch.com, “A significant portion of people misuse iron supplements.” Additionally, iron ingestion was once the leading cause of poisoning deaths.
To be clear, iron isn’t the only supplement that’s often overconsumed—and that comes back, in part, to the media piece. “More common nutritional deficiencies are frequently overtreated due to widespread reporting, screening and the ever-growing supplement market,” Dr. Fitzgerald says. “Many consumers seek quick-fix remedies for health concerns, and with dietary supplements remaining unregulated by the FDA and content creators dispersing health information on a myriad of platforms, the outcomes can be uncertain and even harmful.”

That isn’t to say that taking iron supplements is always a concern, however. For people who are truly deficient in iron, supplements may help. With that said, it’s vital to know if that’s the case for you. If you don’t know for a fact that you’re iron-deficient, taking iron is not a good move.
“Consuming iron without bloodwork is really taking a shot in the dark,” Dr. Goderwis warns. “Iron is not harmless; consuming too much can cause a lot of issues.”
Pharmacists’ Concerns About Iron and People Taking the Supplement IncorrectlySo, the million-dollar question: What’s the big fuss? A plethora of issues, according to Dr. Goderwis. GI side effects include constipation and nausea. Too much iron can interact with or interfere with the absorption of other medications, too, making them completely unhelpful or less helpful.
Those aren’t even the scariest effects. “Taking too much iron can lead to serious health issues, including organ damage (liver, heart, pancreas), organ failure and even death,” Dr. Fitzgerald says. “Acute iron poisoning is a medical emergency and occurs most often in children, who sometimes accidentally ingest these supplements, mistaking them for candy.”

Additionally, avid iron-takers need to know this surprising and concerning fact: Not all iron supplements are the same. According to Dr. Fitzgerald, they don’t all provide the same absorption and general tolerance. Plus, the cheaper and more common versions can be more likely to cause gastrointestinal issues.
All of that is especially concerning (and, frankly, unnecessary) if you don’t need more iron in the first place. To know if your iron levels are where they need to be, you’ll want to get labs done, not just rely on symptoms.
The bottom line is this: Labs or no labs, taking iron supplements without a medical provider’s support is something to avoid. “Iron supplementation is not ‘one size fits all,’” Dr. Goderwis says. “As with any health condition, diagnosis and treatment should be guided by a qualified provider and monitored at regular intervals.”

The Easy Way To Turn Canned Crescent Rolls Into a Bakery-Worthy Pastry

Traditionally, they're made with laminated dough and careful shaping, but Brown's version, which leans on canned crescent roll dough, skips all of that fuss while still giving you the flavor and texture you want.
This recipe features only four ingredients, one muffin pan and about 20 minutes in the oven to deliver a tray of cinnamon sugar pastries that look like they belong in a pastry case. Roll out the crescent dough, pinching the perforations together to seal them. When you're done, you should have a large rectangle of solid dough. This was hard for me to achieve because my rolls kept separating and tearing, but I eventually got it close enough to the right shape.

Spread a light layer of softened butter across the dough, then mix the cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle that mixture over the butter.

Roll the dough tightly into a log, pinching the end to seal.

Slice the dough in half crosswise, creating two dough rolls. Working with one dough roll at a time, slice the dough in half lengthwise, exposing the cinnamon sugar layers inside.

Wrap the dough pieces into loose spirals around your finger, with the cut sides facing outward so the layers remain visible as they bake. Place each dough spiral into a muffin cup.

Bake at 350°F for about 20 minutes until the cruffins are golden and crisp on top. As soon as you remove them from the oven, sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar generously over the pastries.

Crescent Roll Cruffins: My Honest ThoughtsFrom a difficulty standpoint, this recipe is extremely approachable. The dough is pretty easy to handle, but it does take some practice to get the spiral right. I will say that even imperfect spirals bake up beautifully, though, which makes this an especially friendly recipe for inexperienced bakers.

The texture is where these really shine. The edges are crisp and caramelized, while the centers stay soft and tender. Each bite has visible layers, pockets of cinnamon sugar and just enough butter to make them indulgent without being greasy. The flavor is simple but nostalgic. It's like a classic cinnamon roll went to Paris on vacation.
But the real win? My kids declared them "the best breakfast we've had all week!" That compliment, plus the fact that these treats are so easy to put together, means I'll absolutely make them again.

4 Tips for Making This RecipeBased on my experience and Brown's, here are a few things to keep in mind if you make this recipe.
1. Roll it rightTo create cruffins with tall, flaky, layered tops, you need to take your time when rolling and shaping the dough. "Rolling tightly and slicing cleanly makes the biggest difference in those pretty layers," shares Brown.
2. Top it offThe final hit of cinnamon sugar might not seem like a big deal, but Brown says that the simple step makes the pastries so much better. "Don’t skip the cinnamon sugar sprinkle on top," she says. "It gives them that extra sweet crunch."
3. Mix things upThe cinnamon sugar version is classic and delicious, but I think it would be fun to divide the dough in half and make two variations so you could have a cruffin assortment for breakfast or brunch. I have my eye on Brown's Nutella version, but the carrot cake option would be great for any upcoming spring parties.

This 1969 Classic Song Reached No. 1 on Billboard 56 Years Ago Today
Fifty-six years ago today, the Jackson 5's classic song "I Want You Back" reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
The hit was the group's debut single and became a massive success due to its infectious energy, catchy melody and outstanding vocals. While the song was the first released by the group under the Motown label, it launched them into megastardom within the first four months of release.
"I Want You Back" was written by the Corporation, a record production team assembled by Motown label head Berry Gordy. The song was originally intended to be for Gladys Knight or Diana Ross; however, after hearing the Jacksons' rendition, it is hard to imagine anyone else singing it.
The classic song was the first of four consecutive hits for the band. Songs such as "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There" all debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart in the year that followed, 1970.
The multi-hit run quickly established the small-town group as a pop-soul phenomenon. Their unique youthful sound and energy played a pivotal role in defining the genre in the early 1970s. The Jackson family's fame only grew in the coming years, with the breakout band member Micheal Jackson pursuing a solo career in 1971.

“I feel like there have been a lot of times when I’ve been doing my best work creatively, and yet my celebrity has been louder than the work,” she said, tears falling as she spoke. “And my mom has always been here to set the record straight in my head and remind me of my worth as an artist and as a human being every time that noise has almost derailed me.”
Loved on the screen as well, Grande was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked: For Good. The Oscars, however, did not come a’calling, causing many to chalk the snub up to one of the most egregious of all time. But you can be the judge on that.

It's been over a year since the world learned that Dave Grohl fathered a child outside his marriage, but now, it looks like it's all love between the Foo Fighters frontman and his wife of over 20 years, Jordyn Blum.
The pair was spotted on the red carpet together on Friday, Jan. 30, as they attended the 2026 MusiCares Person of the Year event honoring Mariah Carey at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The couple looked comfortable and color coordinated as they posed for the cameras. Grohl sported monochromatic black pants, a black button-down shirt featuring silver buttons, and a black velvet jacket.

This isn't the first time Grohl and Blum have been spotted together since he announced in September 2024 that he had fathered a child with another woman. In that statement, Grohl confessed, "I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness."
Foo Fighters fans were both shocked and disappointed in Grohl, and rumors about the future of his marriage didn't look good, but Grohl and Blum never separated.

Dave Grohl Collaborated With Taylor Momsen for the 2026 MusiCares Person of the Year EventWhile on hand for the 2026 MusiCares Person of the Year event that honored Carey, Foo Fighters took to the stage with special guest Taylor Momsen to treat the audience.
Together, they performed songs from the '90s grunge offering Someone's Ugly Daughter. The album was released in 1995 by Chick, with Carey's friend, Clarissa Dane, singing lead.
Carey's involvement in the Chick project wasn't known until her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, when she revealed that she wrote, produced, and sang background vocals for the '90s grunge project, though her vocals were not included in the 1995 album release.
The 10 Most Important Black TV Shows of All Time
Abbott Elementary. Atlanta. The Chi. Queen Sugar. The Other Black Girl. Swarm. There’s no doubt about it—we’re in the midst of the Golden Age of Black television.
“The last few years have been very pivotal in terms of Black creators doing really interesting things on TV,” says Bethonie Butler, author of the 2023 bookBlack TV: Five Decades of Groundbreaking Television from Soul Train to Black-ish and Beyond. “That’s why it’s a good time to look back at the last 50, 60 years and see how far we’ve come.”
Indeed, the wealth of fresh content is the culmination of an undeniably long struggle for Black artists to find a voice and fight for representation.
Though Black performers have appeared on television for as long as the small screen has been around—Broadway star Ethel Waters hosted a one-off variety show on NBC in June 1939 when television was still in its infancy—quality roles took decades to develop. Most actors were relegated to playing servants or service workers.
The first Black sitcom, Amos ‘n’ Andy, originated from a radio program in which two white men portrayed the Black characters. When adapted to TV in 1951 with a Black cast, the actors behaved like caricatures and spoke with a broad dialect, relying heavily on stereotypical malapropisms. Meanwhile, 1960s stalwarts from The Andy Griffith Show to Bewitched featured zero diversity.

But as TV (and the culture) evolved, Black characters became more prominent and influential. And the likes of Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay and Issa Rae, who grew up watching popular shows like The Jeffersons, Family Matters, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Sister, Sister—which captured Black people in various lights and occupations—eventually entered the business and elevated the medium.
“They’re telling our own stories on TV and doing it in a way that’s authentic and reflects our experiences and not necessarily what networks are telling them to put on the screen,” Butler says. While she acknowledges that the state of Black TV still isn’t perfect, “we’re definitely headed in the right direction.”
So how did we get to this Golden Age, and what does the future look like? Butler covers many more shows in her book, but here’s her rundown for Parade of the 10 most important Black TV shows in history.

1. Julia (ABC, 1968–71)Premise: Julia Baker (Diahann Carroll) is a nurse who relocates to Los Angeles after her husband gets killed fighting in Vietnam. Now she’s raising her five-year-old son, Corey (Marc Copage), on her own. Paul Winfield, Don Marshall and Fred Williamson appeared over the years as memorable suitors.
Why it matters: The pioneering sitcom—which premiered just months after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.—“was the first time we saw a Black family on TV,” Butler says. “And Julia herself was such a hardworking nurse and mom. It got us over the hump because it showed that you could actually tell our stories.” Carroll made history in 1969 as the first Black actor to be nominated for an Emmy and won a Golden Globe that same year.
Behind the scenes: On the very first day of the show’s production, Carroll was dismayed that the studio’s makeup department couldn’t provide any products suitable for her skin tone. “The studio had only dealt with the little American girls or European girls,” Carroll, who died in 2019, once said. “How could you have a makeup department and you don’t have makeup for every skin in the United States of America?”

2. Good Times (CBS, 1974–79)Premise: In the spinoff of Maude from producer Norman Lear, the Evans family tries to make it work in the Cabrini-Green housing projects of Chicago. James (John Amos) and Florida (Esther Rolle) are the working-class parents raising their three kids—including the lively J.J. (Jimmie Walker). They’d also get visits from their neighbor Willona (Ja’Net DuBois) and superintendent Bookman (Johnny Brown).
Why it matters: Though Butler says the sitcom wasn’t “necessarily told in the most authentic way all the time,” she commends its impact: “I know [Black-ish creator] Kenya Barris has talked about how much he loved it and respected Norman Lear. And back when there were just a few networks, this show was very popular and everybody was watching.” Even Walker’s “Dy-no-mite!” catchphrase became a national obsession.
Behind the scenes: After the show started to focus on Walker’s character, tensions among the cast began to boil over. “By the end of the third season, John Amos was so glum and dispirited that it seemed impossible to go on,” Lear wrote in his 2014 memoir. “[So] we decided to write him off the show.” Amos himself admitted to Jet in 2008, “I wasn’t the most diplomatic guy in those days.”

3. Roots (ABC, 1977)Premise: Based on Alex Haley’s 1976 novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family, the eight-part miniseries revolves around the lead character Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) as he’s taken from Gambia, West Africa, and sold into slavery in America. The sprawling story consists of his experiences and the generations that follow.
Why it matters: The Emmy-winning drama, which aired consecutively from Jan. 23 through Jan. 30, was unusual at the time for its graphic, violent depiction of slavery and racial injustice. “It was the first time Americans of any race really saw the horrors of slavery,” Butler says. “And everyone was talking about it.” That’s no exaggeration—its final episode was viewed by more than 100 million people, representing nearly 85 percent of television households at the time.
Behind the scenes: Burton was a 19-year-old theater major at USC when he auditioned for Kunta Kinte—his first professional audition ever. Remembering the series, he said on Twitter in 2021, “My first day on the set, legendary [Cicely Tyson] played my mother, Bings Kinte. [Maya Angelou] played my grandmother, Nyo Boto. I was in the big leagues. The sole reason I wasn’t intimidated was the actor’s certainty that I KNEW who the character was. I knew that kid. I was that kid!”

The Cosby ShowNBC
4. The Cosby Show (NBC, 1984–92)Premise: The Huxtables are a well-to-do family living in a Brooklyn brownstone. Cliff (Bill Cosby) is a doctor; his wife Clair (Phylicia Rashad) is a hard-charging lawyer. They also have five kids, including stylish rebel Denise (Lisa Bonet) and precocious Rudy (Keshia Knight Pulliam). The parenthood struggle is all too real ... and hilarious.
Why it matters: When the mega-smash sitcom premiered in the fall of 1984, “A whole generation started watching a Black family on TV in a way that wasn’t stereotypical,” Butler says. “Cliff and Clair were upwardly mobile and had a real partnership in the way they raised their children. It was a wonderful show.” However, she notes that Cosby’s recent assault allegations have cast a pall on its legacy: “Unfortunately, I think it’s impossible to separate The Cosby Show from Bill Cosby and his behavior as a person.”
Behind the scenes: All five of the Huxtable children were based on Cosby’s actual children. The character of Theo (portrayed by Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who died in 2025) was inspired by his late son, Ennis—as was his dyslexia diagnosis. “I’m still proud of its legacy,” Warner said in 2023. “The family dynamic was one that practically every family—no matter the ethnicity, socioeconomic status or even family makeup—could find something to relate to.”
Must-watch episode: “Happy Anniversary” (Season 2, Episode 3)
In Living ColorFox
5. In Living Color (Fox, 1990–94)Premise: The irreverent variety show created by and starring Keenen Ivory Wayans featured a predominantly Black cast, including future breakouts Damon Wayans, David Alan Grier and Jamie Foxx. Plus, Jennifer Lopez was a Fly Girl dancer. It also propelled the then-fledgling Fox network to new pop-culture heights.
Why it matters: Thanks to outrageous characters like Homey D. Clown, Wanda Wayne and Men on Films, the show boldly went where Saturday Night Live wouldn’t dare. In prime time, no less. “This was a show that brought in a lot of Black and Brown comedians who had been working for years and never got the spotlight,” Butler says. “So there was something inherently Black about the humor that you weren’t going to get from SNL.”
Behind the scenes: By the series’ third season in 1992, it had so much clout that Fox decided to run a live special as counter-programming to the more conservative Super Bowlhalftime show. Among the sketches: “Men on Football” with sexual innuendos galore. “There was a Fox executive in the booth with a 60-second delay button and they could have hit the button anytime they wanted,” Keenen Ivory Wayans said in 2019. “But they wanted the controversy.” The next year, the Super Bowl hired Michael Jackson to perform at halftime.

Living SingleFox
6. Living Single (Fox, 1993–98)Premise: Queen Latifah is Khadijah James, the mastermind behind a monthly magazine. She lives it up in Brooklyn with her cousin Synclaire (Kim Coles) and friend, would-be diva Regine (Kim Fields). Pitbull lawyer Max (Erika Alexander), handyman Overton (John Henton) and stockbroker Kyle (Terrence C. Carson) round out the bunch.
Why it matters: A year before Friends, this sitcom featured six upscale twenty-somethings relying on each other while trying to make it in New York City. There was one noticeable difference, of course. “This is a really important show because it highlighted another universal experience, which is friendship,” Butler says. “It was meaningful to watch young Black professionals have this dynamic group. And the women were people you knew.”
Behind the scenes: At the end of the pilot, the ladies grab bathroom appliances and sing and dance to “My Girl.” It wasn’t a coincidence, as the show was originally titled My Girls. The show’s creator, Yvette Lee Bowser, also handpicked each member of the main cast: “Knowing who I wanted those characters to be, I built the ensemble around them,” she said in 2023. Queen Latifah and Coles came onboard early because of their development deals.

7. Moesha (UPN, 1996–2001)Premise: Brandy plays the show’s titular character, a teen living with her middle-class family in South Central with her younger brother, Myles (Marcus T. Paulk), father Frank (William Allen Young) and his new wife, Dee (Sheryl Lee Ralph). Moesha also has a circle of friends—including the chatty Kim (Countess Vaughn)—and loves to frequent The Den.
Why it matters: One of UPN’s biggest hits took on important issues like race, drugs, sex and infidelity. It also starred one of the hottest pop singers of her day. “Adolescence can be a pretty awful experience and it can be detrimental to not see that reflected on TV; this was the exception,” Butler says. “To be a fan of Brandy and then see her as Moesha navigating her life was very meaningful to a lot of Black girls.”
Behind the scenes: There was palpable strife between Brandy and breakout star Vaughn, who later got her own spinoff with The Parkers. Per a 1998 Ebony interview, Vaughn even called the singer a “B---h” during filming. The bad blood went on for years until Vaughn wrote an open apology letter on Instagram in 2015. Brandy responded with, “You are beautiful to me. Always have been and always will be!”

8. Scandal (ABC, 2012–18)Premise: Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is a sharply dressed Washington D.C. fixer with a penchant for yelling “It’s handled!” when asked to perform any task. Each week, Olivia and her “gladiators” at her crisis-management firm tackle a different case, using major spin to cover up affairs and even the occasional killing. She’s also in love with the President of the United States (Tony Goldwyn).
Why it matters: During its heyday, the juicy drama created by powerhouse producer Shonda Rhimes was a did-you-see-it social sensation. Emphasis on drama. “There were so few Black dramas for decades because the emphasis was placed on comedy and people in outrageous situations,” Butler says. “But with Shonda Rhimes at the helm, she felt a responsibility to show a flawed Black woman doing her thing day in and day out.” Washington was also nominated for two Emmys.
Behind the scenes: Both Taraji P. Henson and Gabrielle Union were in top contention for the role of Olivia before Washington nabbed it. But there are no hard feelings. Said Union in 2013, “It’s very rare to have a Black female lead who gets to do stuff ... So to have the opportunity to even audition for a role like that was awesome. And Kerry does such an amazing job.” Henson added in 2015, “When I went in to read for Shonda Rhimes, in my mind I was like, ‘This is Kerry Washington. Why am I even in here?’ ... It was her job and she’s great in it.”

9. Insecure (HBO, 2016–21)Premise: Two modern-day Black women (played by co-creator and writer Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji)—best friends since graduating from Stanford—juggle work and a myriad ofrelationships in their South L.A. neighborhood.
Why it matters: In a refreshing update on Living Single, the comedy—loosely based on Rae’s acclaimed web series Awkward Black Girl—portrayed relatable characters and highlighted the subtleties of everyday life through friendship, romances and careers. It also took on headier issues like mental health and race. “This is a depiction of being young and figuring out what it means to be an adult,” Butler explains. For Black Millennials, “It resonated in a special way.”
Behind the scenes: Orji said in 2020 that she first interacted with Rae after writing her on Twitter to say she was a fan of Awkward Black Girl. The actress says that Rae responded and invited her to her wine and game night at her house. “Of course I get to her house and her friends are like, ‘What? Issa is inviting people to the house off Twitter?’” she said. By the time she auditioned for Insecure, “We weren’t best friends, but we had a rapport.”
Must-watch episode: “High-Like” (Season 3, Episode 5)

10. Abbott Elementary (ABC, 2021–)Premise: For this mockumentary-style workplace comedy, a group of dedicated teachers are brought together in a Philadelphia public school. Despite the odds stacked against them, they’re determined to help their students succeed. Taking the lead: writer Quinta Brunson’s optimistic second-grade teacher, Janine Teagues.
Why it matters: “It goes back to Quinta,” says Butler of the Emmy-winning writer, creator and star. “She created a personal story inspired by her own experiences at school and is able to tell a story that’s really funny and touching to everyone—not just Black people. It shows how far we’ve come in presenting authentic Black stories and recognizing talent.”
Behind the scenes: Yes, Brunson has said that her mother’s 40-year career as a schoolteacher inspired her to create the show. Sheryl Lee Ralph’s character is based on Mom, and the title is a tribute to her elementary school teacher, Joyce Abbott. But she’s not here to impart hard lessons: “I simply want to make people laugh,” she said in 2022. “That’s all I’m here for. Which is the beauty of the 22-minute sitcom: It can only do so much.”

How John Ritter and Suzanne Somers Quietly Reconciled Before His Sudden Death
In a resurfaced interview from the podcast Still Here Hollywood With Steve Kmetko, actress Amy Yasbeck is sharing a little-known story that longtime Three’s Company fans may find especially meaningful—a brief, unexpected reunion between her late husband John Ritter and his former co-star Suzanne Somers, who left Three's Company over a reported salary dispute.
The moment unfolded during a Broadway night out at Victor/Victoria. During intermission, Yasbeck ran into Somers in the ladies’ room and introduced herself, then told Somers she would "make sure" Ritter said hi at the after-party where Somers was performing.

Back at her seat, Yasbeck decided to give Ritter a heads-up. “I went back to my seat, and I said… ‘John, who’s the last person you would want to see here?’” His first guess missed the mark. “He went, ‘Oh s--t Bochco’s here?’ … I went, ‘No, Suzanne.’”
Yasbeck remembers Ritter physically reacting to the news. “He just like, sat down… he was like, OK.” Though he stayed through the rest of the show, the possibility of a reunion clearly lingered.

'Can’t Dance, Don’t Ask Me'Later that night, Somers performed “Can’t Dance, Don’t Ask Me” at the after-party, and Yasbeck says the song became an opening. “I think he went up to her—she was talking to somebody—and he said, 'Can't dance, don't ask me,' And he like, turned around and they hugged it out and stuff, which was great. It was a big thing."
Looking back, Yasbeck is careful to downplay any intentional reconciliation. “I didn’t do it a sneaky way,” she said, adding, "I think they were great together. But I don't think they ever maybe 'got' each other, like where each other was coming from [after Somers left the show]…John wasn't able to—he didn't ever want to talk about it."

Instead, Ritter chose grace. “He didn’t want to refute anything that Suzanne was saying or get into any kind of a weird thing,” Yasbeck said. “He just loved her, you know?”
Both Ritter and Somers have since died. Ritter died unexpectedly in September 2003 at the age of just 54 from an undiagnosed aortic dissection while starring on the sitcom8 Simple Rules opposite Katey Sagal and Kaley Cuoco. Somers died 20 years later at the age of 76 after a long battle with breast cancer.
“It was sad when she passed. It was sad when John passed away,” Yasbeck reflected. “Because that’s then 20 years [lost]. Lost for like a friendship or any kind of furthering of a reunion. But she was great. She was a great, super strong woman and did a lot in also being her own health advocate. So, I thought she was cool."

February Is Black History Month! What Are the Black History Month Colors, and What Do They Mean?
February is Black History Month, a time to pay tribute to the achievements of African Americans throughout U.S. history. It has been celebrated since 1976 but actually started back in 1926 with Negro History Week. This is when historian Carter G. Woodson decided to showcase the contributions of Black history, which eventually led to Black History Month.
During this month, the focus is on learning about Black culture, influential leaders and significant historical events. Learning about Black History Month's colors is one way to do this.
Each year, as Black History Month is celebrated, there are four colors that you'll likely see incorporated into brands' logos, Facebook profile picture themes, flags flying outside of homes and businesses or featured in windows, social media content and more.

These four colors for Black History Month offer individuals and groups the opportunity to show solidarity, as well as pride, by paying tribute to (and honoring) the achievements and history of African Americans.
So what are the colors of Black History Month? We'll go over the four colors and explain what they signify.

Black History Month uses four colors—black, red, green and yellow—to symbolize unity and pride. Each of the four colors has its own distinct meaning and significance.
The colors of Black History Month are also the colors of many African flags, which have been derived from the Ethiopian flag, as well as the Pan-African flag. Each set has three colors; Ethiopia uses the colors red, yellow and green, which are used to represent the rainbow, while the Pan-African flag contains the colors red, black and green.
The Pan-African flag was created in 1920 to represent the unity of African people no matter where they live and to symbolize Black liberation in the United States. The Ethiopian flag was inspired by the rainbow and is used by several of the other 53 African countries.
Although the Pan-African flag contains the three colors of red, black and green, yellow was borrowed and added to the Black History Month colors from the Ethiopian flag. The four colors are a combination of the two sets of Pan-African colors.

Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Assn. (UNIA) in 1914, which "encouraged the formation of separate institutions out of pride, not because of discrimination." Garvey "emphasized black unity based on shared African heritage."
And in a book published by the UNIA in 1921, this is what was written about the significance of three of the four colors used for Black History Month: "Red is the color of the blood which men must shed for their redemption and liberty; black is the color of the noble and distinguished race to which we belong; green is the color of the luxuriant vegetation of our Motherland."
- Black: Represents the resilient people whose existence as a nation is honored and affirmed by the existence of a flag.
- Red: Symbolizes the blood of innocent Black lives that have been shed throughout history.
- Yellow: Stands for optimism, justice and equality for everyone.
- Green: Symbolizes Africa's rich greenery and other natural resources.
This year's Black History Month theme is "A Century of Black History Commemorations." According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), "For our 100th theme, the founders of Black History Month urge us to explore the impact and meaning of Black history and life commemorations in transforming the status of Black peoples in the modern world."
