1973 Glam Rock Song, From a Legendary Band That Toured With Alice Cooper, Didn’t Originally Chart

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 8:19am

“Trash” was a catchy 1973 glam rock song from the New York Dolls. Although the song didn’t originally end up on the charts, it became a well-known song in the genre. It was produced by Todd Rundgren, who also produced popular artists like Meat Loaf, Cheap Trick, and Badfinger.

“Trash” was written by lead singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain. When speaking with Uncut magazine about the creation of the song, Johansen said, “I co-wrote ‘Trash’ with Syl, so they tell me! I don’t remember exactly, but I always had a notebook so I could write things down, little tidbits. So I had this idea for ‘Trash,’ and he started playing this thing: ‘dang – adang – adang, dang – adang – adang – ding – ding – ding–ding wah!’ I thought, ‘Oh, that would fit this idea.’ It was one of those deals. Usually, the first time we play something, it’s just about getting ideas, and then I’ll go home and write the words. That’s how it worked then, anyway, Syl and I have done a lot of different techniques over the years.”

The New York Dolls were an influential band formed in New York City, who were known for their unique fashion and stage presence. They reached No. 116 on the Billboard 200 for their self-titled debut album, New York Dolls. Some of the band’s other popular songs include “Personality Crisis,” “Looking for a Kiss,” and “Stranded in the Jungle.”

The New York Dolls originally disbanded in 1976. However, they ended up reuniting in 2004 and released three new albums. The band also toured with the legendary Alice Cooper. Unfortunately, they disbanded again after the tour ended in 2011.

At this point in time, all of the original members of The New York Dolls have died. Johansen died in 2025 at the age of 75. Sylvain died in 2021 after a battle with cancer. Drummer Billy Murcia died in 1972, guitarist Johnny Thunders died in 1991, and drummer Jerry Nolan died in 1992.

I Tried Lucille Ball’s Sunday Night Special Casserole, and It’s a Throwback Totally Worth Revisiting

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 7:57am

If you were a kid in the ’90s, Lucille Ball was still very much a household name. With reruns of I Love Lucy taking up blocks of television time, there was no escaping the charming personality of the groundbreaking comedian. Starring alongside her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz, the couple helped establish the modern sitcom format as we know it today, while Ball herself became one of television’s most recognizable female stars.

Pioneering the three-camera format and filming in front of a live studio audience on permanent sets, I Love Lucy effectively made the Ricardos and Mertzes a wholesome example of what family life looked like on television in the 1950s. Now, decades later, Ball’s influence continues to inspire countless fans who want to discover more about the woman who made Lucy Ricardo such an iconic character.

In honor of Lucille Ball and her role as one of television’s most chaotic homemakers, I thought it might be fitting to explore one of the recipes she enjoyed in her own kitchen: Lucy’s Sunday Night Special.

While Lucy Ricardo may have been better known for her culinary mishaps, Ball apparently had some impressive cooking chops of her own. Naturally, a vintage casserole recipe seemed like the perfect place to start, leaving me the fun of discovering whether this throwback dish could live up to its famous namesake.

If you’re a fan of easy dinner ideas, this casserole is sure to be right up your alley. And while variations of the recipe exist online with slightly different measurements, this version makes enough to fill a standard 9-by-13-inch roasting pan or extra-large skillet.

To get started, you’ll need 1 pound of sausage, 1 cup of chopped celery, 1 cup of chopped green peppers, 1 cup of chopped onion and ¼ cup of blanched, finely chopped almonds fried in butter. You’ll also need 1½ cups of uncooked rice and 2 pints of chicken broth.

Using a large skillet or frying pan, fry the finely chopped almonds in butter until they just begin to change color. Remove the almonds from the pan and set them aside for later. Next, add the ground sausage and cook until browned, then transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate to drain off the excess grease.

Now, using the same skillet, sauté the veggies until the onions are slightly translucent. Remove them from the heat, and get ready to layer all the cooked ingredients in a casserole dish. If your skillet is large enough and oven-safe up to 350°F, you can also bring the recipe to life using just one pan.

Evenly spread the sausage in the casserole dish, followed by the veggies and fried almonds. Next, layer on the 1½ cups of rice, then pour in the 2 pints of chicken broth. Place the dish on the center rack of an oven preheated to 350°F and cook for 1 to 2 hours, or until the broth has been absorbed and the rice is fully cooked. Once finished, remove the dish from the oven, let cool for 5 minutes and serve hot.

What I Thought of Lucy’s Sunday Night Special

Courtesy Nathan Hutsenpiller

Given that this recipe includes literally zero seasonings or spices, I was a little suspicious going in. That said, like many of the casseroles I’ve made in the past, Lucy’s Sunday Night Special truly serves as a blank canvas that is super easy to upgrade. So while I was impressed by the end results, I admittedly took the liberty of seasoning the veggies and adding some shredded cheddar on top for extra flavor.

On its own, this recipe is a reliable budget-friendly dinner that may take a couple hours to come together, but it’s totally worth it in the end. And with such a simple lineup of ingredients, it’s truly a no-fuss recipe that is more than easy to recreate at home.

Tips for Making Lucy’s Sunday Night Special

Here are some ways to make this casserole even more special.

1. Trust the process.

If you’re anything like me, incorporating uncooked rice into this dish might initially seem like a mistake. But if you trust the process and stick to the measurements, you’ll be surprised by the results. If the top layer of your rice is taking a little longer to cook, cover the dish with foil to trap the steam inside and help the rice cook through and fluff up.

2. Experiment with the protein.

While this recipe calls for sausage, you have plenty of freedom when it comes to which sausage or protein you use. Considering the other ingredients are simply rice and veggies, you can easily experiment with breakfast sausage, hot Italian sausage, chicken, ground beef, ground turkey and more. Part of the charm of casseroles is their flexibility, and this recipe is practically begging for a little creativity.

3. Amp up the flavor.

As I mentioned before, Ball’s recipe does not include any sort of spices or seasonings, which gives you a major opportunity to make this dish your own. I personally had onion powder, dried parsley, smoked paprika, thyme, and salt and pepper on hand, which did a great job bringing more flavor out of the veggies and meat. And if you want a little more color in the end result, top the dish with a layer of shredded cheddar during the last 15 minutes of baking for a golden, bubbly, cheesy finish.

Final Thoughts

Now that you’ve got a new recipe to explore and a handful of tips on how to bring it to life, you can make your own version of Lucy’s Sunday Night Special at home. Have fun with it, make mistakes and have a laugh along the way in honor of the redhead who expertly turned chaos into comedy.

Travel Experts Say This Is the Best Seat to Book on a Long Flight After 50

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 7:48am

Your airplane seat can make or break a long flight—especially after 50. Pick well, and you’ll have more room to move, stretch and reach the restroom without a hassle.

Travel experts agree one seat stands out. Here’s what to book, and what to avoid.

Related: This Airline Just Upgraded Premium Economy With Full Privacy Screens, Electric Recline, and Wireless Charging

Why the Aisle Seat Wins

For long-haul flights, travel pros overwhelmingly favor the aisle seat for travelers over 50. The view may be less scenic, but easy movement matters more: Sitting still for hours can worsen stiffness, cramping and the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

“In general, for travelers over 50 who are flying on a long flight of 6 hours or more, I recommend an aisle seat,” says Kelly Connor, associate travel agent with AAA Club Alliance in New Jersey.

Direct aisle access lets you stand, stretch and walk the cabin without climbing over your seatmates.

“The aisle gives you the easiest path to stand, stretch, use the restroom, and change positions without asking someone else to move,” Expedia travel expert Melanie Fish tells Parade.

The aisle can also feel less confined and offers a little room to stretch when carts aren’t passing. For even more space, check the airline’s seat map.

The Aisle Seat’s Hidden Drawbacks

Freedom comes with trade-offs: passing carts, foot traffic and frequent interruptions. Where you sit in the cabin matters. “The aisle is convenient, but it is not automatically peaceful,” says Fish.

Skip rows beside galleys and restrooms, where carts, lines and noise pile up. A mid-cabin aisle seat is often calmer but know about other issues too. “The main drawback of an aisle seat on a long-haul flight is the disruptions from seatmates,” said Connor with AAA Club Alliance.

If your row is busy, a few smart accessories can soften the disruption.

“The light and sound from the galleys, even with curtains can also be disruptive, but it’s nothing a good eye mask and ear plugs and headphones cannot fix,” says Katy Nastro, aviation & travel correspondent at Flighty, a flight tracking app.

Is a Premium Upgrade Worth It?

Premium economy and extra-legroom rows cost more, but on a 6+ hour flight, the added space may be money well spent.

“For over 50 travelers, it is worth the extra cost to have extra legroom in a bulkhead, exit row or premium economy seat on a long flight if you have circulation issues or any other physical or medical condition that makes it uncomfortable to sit for long periods,” says Connor.

Premium Economy typically brings a wider seat, deeper recline and more space, welcome relief for your back and knees without the first-class price.

Still, extra-legroom seats have trade-offs worth checking before you pay. “Exit rows can offer excellent legroom, but they are not always better,” points out Fish at Expedia.

Bulkhead rows lack under-seat storage during takeoff and landing, so anything you need must go overhead.

However, if you can splurge on business class, enjoy the privilege, with more comfortable seats, upgraded food and attentive service.

Seat-Map Traps to Avoid

Before you confirm, scan the aircraft layout. Limited recline, engine noise and nearby galleys can turn a long flight into a grind.

“When I review a seat map, I look beyond the labels,” emphasizes Fish. Avoid the last row when possible: Those seats may barely recline and often sit beside noisy galleys, restroom odors and lines.

Easy In-Flight Comfort Hacks

Prone to motion sickness or vertigo? Choose a mid-cabin seat over the wings, where the ride is usually steadier.

Once you board, set up your space right away. A few simple ergonomic tweaks can head off stiffness before they start.

Your carry-on already holds useful comfort tools. Of course you already know to bring a quality neck pillow, but there’s more tips to know.

“Use a sweatshirt or jacket for lower-back support,” says Nastro. Another hack: roll a tennis ball under your foot arches to boost circulation and release tension.

The Takeaway

For a long-haul flight after age 50, book a mid-cabin aisle seat away from galleys and restrooms. The CDC recommends getting up every two to three hours on long flights to support circulation and reduce blood-clot risk. Use a neck pillow, add compression footwear and some lower-back support, and you’ll be better set to land feeling good and ready to enjoy your trip.

Barry Williams Names His Favorite ‘Brady Bunch’ Girlfriend—And It Might Surprise You

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 7:42am

Greg Brady had an eye for the ladies on The Brady Bunch, but one of them stood out to Barry Williams. The actor who played the eldest Brady son for five seasons on the ABC sitcom in the 1970s recently revealed that he’d love to get an update on one of his onscreen romances.

During a fan Q&A at RetroCon at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center on Sept. 13, Williams, 71, was asked if he ever had a real-life attraction to any of his character’s girlfriends on the show.

“All of them!” the actor replied at first.

Williams then explained that they all hung out in a professional setting so things never went further with any of his TV girlfriends.

Still, The Brady Bunch star admitted there is one actress he still wonders about.

“From the Cincinnati amusement park, Marge,” Williams told the crowd, adding that he would like to look up the actress to see where she ended up.

“Marcia hated her!” Williams joked of his co-star Maureen McCormick, who famously had a crush on him at the time.

Actress Hilary Thompson played Marge, an amusement park worker at a football-throwing stand, on the 1973 Brady Bunch episode “The Cincinnati Kids.” The episode was filmed at the Kings Island amusement park in Cincinnati.

In one scene, Greg Brady hangs at the football stand, throwing balls as he flirts with the pretty park employee played by Thompson. “I’m gonna keep throwing until you tell me your name,” he says. “I think I’ve thrown more balls than Joe Namath in a whole season.”

Greg later dresses up in an animal costume in an attempt to find Marge in the employee lounge so he can take her on a date.

Thompson, now 77, had a fairly prolific acting resume in the 1970s and ‘80s, appearing in episodes of Starsky & Hutch, Barnaby Jones, Charlie’s Angels, Operation Petticoat and more. Her last TV credit on IMDb is listed as a role in the 1988 sitcom ALF, the same year she got married.

Williams, who married his wife Tina Mahina in 2017, previously joked about looking for Marge.

In 2013, he returned to Kings Island for a fan event alongside his Brady co-stars Christopher Knight and Susan Olsen. When asked by Attractions magazine if Marge was still working the football throw game 40 years later, Williams replied, “I hope so. I hope so because I am looking for her!”

The actor added, “I understand they’ve made the football throw hole 33 percent smaller so it’s really going to test my arm. But I’m up to the challenge. Can you believe we’re still talking about these things?”

Over five seasons of The Brady Bunch, Williams’ character had plenty of crushes and girlfriends. Some of the most memorable were Jennifer Nichols (Tannis Montgomery) from the episode “Greg’s Triangle”; Linda from the episode “Peter and the Wolf”; Greg’s “revenge date” Kathy Lawrence (Sheri Cowart) from the episode “My Sister, Benedict Arnold”; and Rachel, who appeared in several episodes of the series and was played by Brady Bunch showrunner Sherwood Schwartz’s daughter, Hope Juber.

Dakota Johnson and Machine Gun Kelly Spark Dating Rumors, and the Internet Would Like a Word

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 7:41am

Dakota Johnson and Machine Gun Kelly are sparking dating rumors after being spotted together in New York City, and fans already have plenty to say about the unexpected pairing.

The newly single actress and Megan Fox’s ex were photographed getting out of a black SUV and heading into Taylor Swift’s Tribeca apartment, according to photos obtained by TMZ. While the sighting doesn’t confirm the two are dating, the timing has fans wondering whether there could be something more going on. Johnson split from singer Role Model weeks ago, while MGK has been linked to Fox, with whom he shares a daughter.

Of course, social media users had plenty of thoughts, with many seemingly convinced the potential pairing is anything but a match made in heaven.

“Damn she sure knows how to sink her reputation. She can’t do better?” one person wrote in response to TMZ’s X post about the sighting. Another wondered whether Johnson and MGK may have been seeing each other for longer than fans realize.

“It’s obvious they’ve been meeting secretly before the announced split. The way women move on from their existing relationship is amazing,” the social media user wrote.

Others weren’t impressed with Johnson’s track record when it comes to romance. “the way she went from don jon to mgk is actually the plot of a horror movie. no notes,” one person commented.

Some commenters, however, weren’t buying the dating speculation at all.

“This is all BS. Just like the clay Matthews ad..,” someone posted. “Mgk will be pimping cesears sportsbook by noon tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, another X user urged everyone to pump the brakes on the speculation, pointing out, “hate to break it to you guys but just because a man and a woman are hanging out together doesn‘t mean that it‘s romantic.”

MGK and Fox were engaged in 2022 following a whirlwind romance. Their relationship hit turbulence in 2024, and they later separated before welcoming their daughter, Saga Blade, in 2025. Johnson and Role Model dated for less than a year before reportedly splitting in mid-2026.

The 'Healthy' Cooking Oil a Cardiologist Never Uses To Make Eggs

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 7:36am

The alarm goes off, the coffee starts brewing and it’s time to whip up the most important meal of the day. For many of us, breakfast means cracking a couple of eggs into a skillet. Eggs are a beloved morning staple—they are packed with protein, incredibly versatile and quick to prepare before a busy day of work or family obligations. But if you are trying to be mindful of your cardiovascular health, you might be accidentally sabotaging your morning routine before it even begins. It turns out that how you cook those eggs matters just as much as the eggs themselves.

In recent years, wellness influencers and online health blogs have championed one particular cooking oil as a miracle ingredient, encouraging home cooks to scoop it into their frying pans for everything from evening stir-fries to Sunday morning omelets. But despite its glowing reputation on social media, many top heart doctors are firmly against it.

Dr. Nick West, an interventional cardiologist, chief medical officer and divisional vice president of global medical affairs at Abbott’s vascular business, knows a thing or two about starting the day right, and has previously shared his typical breakfast with Parade. While he occasionally treats himself to scrambled eggs with avocado on wholemeal toast topped with sriracha sauce, he is highly selective about how his morning meals are prepared. Specifically, there is a “healthy” cooking oil he warned about using: coconut oil.

While coconut oil is frequently marketed to consumers as a miracle superfood, Dr. West cautioned that using coconut or palm oils to fry foods can be detrimental to your body due to the severe cholesterol implications. When you are looking to protect your heart—the engine that keeps you alive and present for your loved ones—falling for this wellness trend could actually be putting your long-term cardiovascular health at risk. The betrayal of deceptive health marketing is real, and the stakes for your arteries are simply too high to ignore.

Related: How Long Does It Take To Lower Cholesterol? Cardiologists Explain the Real Timeline

Why Coconut Oil Isn’t the Heart-Healthy Choice You Think It Is

When you stroll down the grocery store aisle, coconut oil jars are often plastered with imagery of pristine beaches, fresh coconuts and trendy wellness buzzwords. It inherently sounds healthy—after all, there is literally a fruit in its name. But when you look beneath the surface, the nutritional profile tells a much darker story for your cardiovascular system.

In a previous Parade interview on the dangers of coconut oil, Dr. Rohit Vuppuluri, an internal and vascular cardiologist at Chicago Heart & Vascular Specialists, echoed Dr. West’s concerns about the popular pantry staple.

“Coconut oil is very high in saturated fat, approximately 80 to 90 percent,” Dr. Vuppuluri explained. “Even though coconut oil has been called a superfood, consuming foods with increased saturated fats can lead to elevated LDL cholesterol, which is a strong risk factor for heart disease. Unlike olive oil, coconut oil has not been shown in long-term studies to protect the heart.”

Elevated LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is notorious for creating thick plaque buildup in your arteries. Over time, this buildup restricts essential blood flow, silently raising your risk for a catastrophic, life-altering event like a heart attack or a stroke. Pouring a heavy dose of coconut oil into your skillet every morning might give your scrambled eggs a slightly sweet, tropical flair, but it’s fundamentally a shortcut to compromised cardiovascular health.

Healthier Cooking Oils for Your Morning Eggs

If you want to treat your heart with the care, longevity and respect it deserves, ditching the coconut oil is a powerful first step. But what should you use to grease your pan instead?

According to Dr. Srihari Naidu, a cardiologist and professor of medicine at New York Medical College who also spoke with Parade about cooking oils, unsaturated fats are the way to go to protect your heart.

“Overall, as a cardiologist, I would still recommend canola, sunflower or safflower oils,” Dr. Naidu said. Additionally, many dietitians and heart experts highly recommend extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil, which actively work to lower your LDL cholesterol and protect your long-term wellness.

However, even when using a heart-approved oil, it is important to remember that dietary moderation is the ultimate key to a long, healthy life.

Dr. West pointed out that he doesn’t eat his avocado and egg breakfast every single day, precisely because of the inherent fat and cholesterol content of the dish itself. Instead, he balances his week by relying on meals that are high in fiber, vitamins and nutrients, while keeping his sugar intake strictly limited. On a typical morning, you are much more likely to find the cardiologist eating a bowl of berries, apples or pineapple combined with low-fat yogurt and granola.

By swapping out dangerous saturated fats for truly heart-healthy ingredients, you can reclaim your morning routine—and successfully safeguard your heart for decades to come.

Most kids love cookies and being able to take part in making them becomes a fun activity with yummy results.

24. Make Food Art

53. Look at Old Pictures

Take a trip down memory lane by browsing through old photo albums. Kids love to see younger versions of parents and grandparents. Best of all, they’ll learn a little of their history at the same time.

54. Make a Gift for Mom and Dad

Being away from mom and dad gives kids the opportunity to make them a special surprise gift. It’s a rewarding way to be creative.

55. Play Karaoke

Get your grandkids singing with a round of karaoke. This is best for older kids, but even the young ones can join in with their own rendition.

56. Set Up an Obstacle Course

Use pillows, cardboard boxes, hula hoops and jump ropes to create an indoor or outdoor obstacle course. Time each other to see who can get through it the fastest, and let the grandkids help design the course.

57. Conduct a Fun Science Experiment

Turn your kitchen into a laboratory for the afternoon! Simple experiments like making a baking soda and vinegar volcano, creating slime or mixing cornstarch and water (oobleck) will completely fascinate kids of all ages.

58. Have a Make-Your-Own Pizza Night

Instead of ordering out, buy some pre-made dough (or make your own) and set out a buffet of toppings. Let each grandchild stretch out their own personal-sized pizza and decorate it exactly how they want before tossing it in the oven.

59. Create a Scrapbook

Print out some of the photos you’ve taken together over the years and grab a blank notebook, some stickers and markers. Spend the afternoon reminiscing while you paste the photos in and write funny captions or dates next to them.

60. Start a Container Garden

While planting a tree is a wonderful long-term project, planting a few quick-sprouting seeds (like radishes, beans or marigolds) in small, decorated pots gives them a project they can watch grow on your windowsill every time they visit.

1971 Song, a Billboard No. 1 Hit for One Week, Was Written at Tennessee Studio in 15 Minutes

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 6:37am

Al Green had one of his biggest songs almost by accident.

“Let’s Stay Together,” first released as a single in 1971, became a major turning point in Green’s career. The song later reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for one week in February 1972. It also reached the top of the R&B chart and became Green’s only song to reach No. 1 on the pop chart.

At Royal Recording Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, producer Willie Mitchell was working on a musical arrangement with drummer Al Jackson Jr. Mitchell had already been guiding Green’s career at Hi Records, but Green had not yet reached the pop Top 10, per Ultimate Classic Rock.

When Mitchell presented the developing track to Green, the singer was not immediately convinced. Green took about 15 minutes to write the lyrics. The music already had its basic shape, while Green supplied the words and vocal idea. But getting the final recording right took much longer.

Mitchell recalled that Green needed time to find the right way to sing the song. At that point in his career, Green was still trying to sing with the power of performers such as Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and Wilson Pickett.

Mitchell wanted something different.

Green remembered Mitchell telling him, “Don’t try to handle the song, Al. Just let the song happen – just let it happen. Just let it ooze out.”

That advice became important to the recording. Instead of pushing his voice, Green gradually found a softer and more personal sound.

The recording process was far slower than the writing. Mitchell said it took “100 and some hours to put the song on tape.” The producer kept asking Green to stop trying to sound like other singers and simply use his own voice.

“I was trying to sing like Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke and Wilson Pickett,” Green later told The New York Times. “He said, ‘Sing like Al Green.’”

The breakthrough came when Green finally delivered the vocal Mitchell wanted.

“I wanted this golden voice on it, and he kept giving me somebody else’s voice,” Mitchell told NPR. “And that’s why we kept going over and over and over and over again. When he nailed it, I said, ‘That’s the one.’”

Another important part of the recording was the microphone.

Mitchell had tested different microphones for Green’s voice. He eventually found the sound he wanted with an RCA 77DX ribbon microphone, which he marked as No. 9.

The microphone was sensitive enough to pick up the small details in Green’s performance, including his softer sounds and changes in pitch. That helped create the intimate vocal style heard on “Let’s Stay Together.”

Green explained the difference he felt while using the microphone in Mitchell’s studio.

“I’m not learned in sound, but I know that we got some magic going,” Green told The New Yorker. He described singing the song and hearing Mitchell respond, “Now, that’s what Al Green sounds like. Damn.”

The finished recording was released as a single in 1971 and later became the title track of Green’s January 1972 album, Let’s Stay Together.

According to Billboard, Green has one No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. That song is “Let’s Stay Together.” It reached the top after entering the chart in late 1971 and remained on the Hot 100 for 16 weeks overall.

The song also became a major R&B success, spending nine weeks at No. 1 on the R&B chart.

The success helped establish Green as one of the leading soul singers of the early 1970s. His next releases continued to perform strongly, including “I’m Still in Love With You,” “Look What You Done for Me” and “You Ought to Be With Me.”

Green’s original recording continued to receive major recognition decades after its release. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2010 for its cultural, historical or aesthetic significance.

The song has also appeared in films, including Pulp Fiction and Hellboy. Its place in popular culture has kept the 1971 recording familiar to new generations.

The path from a Tennessee recording studio to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 began with a simple arrangement and lyrics written in about 15 minutes.

Beloved Theme Park Shuts Down Fan-Favorite Ride After 32 Years

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 6:37am

For more than three decades, Hersheypark visitors have had one way to cool off during the summer: Tidal Force. But after 32 years of sending riders plunging into the water, the Boardwalk attraction officially ended its run last Monday, on Labor Day.

Opened in 1994, Tidal Force became one of Hersheypark’s signature water rides. The attraction would take riders up a 100-foot incline before sending them down a steep drop at speeds of more than 50 mph. The splashdown was big enough to soak riders — and often anyone standing nearby.

The amusement park has not said why they are closing down the ride or whether another attraction will eventually replace it. Hersheypark officials announced the shutdown of Title Force over the summer.

Located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Hersheypark is one of the country’s best-known amusement parks, combining the town’s famous chocolate heritage with roller coasters, family rides, water attractions and seasonal events. The park currently features more than 70 attractions, including a large collection of roller coasters and The Boardwalk water park.

Many visitors expressed their disappointment on social media over the ride being shut down.

“them getting rid of tidal force actually has me upset,” a user quote-tweeted on X. “that’s one of their best rides.”

“RIP, Tidal Force. I went on it once, and every inch of my body and clothes was SOAKED. Even stuff in my wallet,” an X user reminisced. “It was like being propelled through a wall of water. Nothing like it.”

“Was just on this ride a few weeks ago and we had a blast lol terrible that it’s closing,” a recent park-goer posted.

Another recent park-goer who went over Labor Day weekend commented: “i just went yesterday it was very busy and an amazing amusement park!!!”

“Damn this is sad,” another X user quote-tweeted. “Loved this ride as a kid.”

One asked: “Would it be too much to ask, why they are closing down that ride?”

The park’s history dates back to 1906, when entrepreneur Milton S. Hershey opened Hershey Park as a place for his employees and their families to relax and enjoy the outdoors by hosting picnics, boating and park entertainment. It eventually evolved into a full-fledged theme park.

By the 1970s, Hershey Park had undergone a major transformation, adopting the one-price admission model and expanding its lineup of rides. Today, Hersheypark has become a major Pennsylvania attraction while maintaining its connection to the chocolate brand and Milton S. Hershey’s original vision.

But don’t worry, Hersheypark’s 2026 season is far from over, and the legendary theme park isn’t planning on slowing down anytime soon.

Weekend operations resumed on Saturday with Hersheypark Halloween during the day and Dark Nights after sunset. The park will then transition into its holiday celebration on November 13 with its iconic Christmas Candylane that features millions of lights, holiday entertainment and attractions, which runs until January 3, 2027.

Tickets for Hersheypark are currently on sale starting at $36.99 for select dates.

1974 Soft-Rock Gem, Recorded by Helen Reddy, Captured the Unbreakable Bond Between Parent and Child

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 6:33am

When Helen Reddy‘s “You and Me Against the World” hit the airwaves in the spring of 1974, it immediately set itself apart from standard Top 40 love songs.

Instead of romantic heartbreak, the track focused on the quiet resilience of family. What made the record truly unforgettable was its intimate opening and ending: the delicate, spoken-word voice of Reddy’s own young daughter, Traci.

That simple, genuine addition turned a beautiful arrangement into a deeply personal snapshot of parenthood, which resonated with listeners. Decades later, that delicate mother-daughter moment remains one of the most tender ever captured on tape.

Paul Williams and Ken Ascher wrote the song. According to Songfacts, it was the first song they composed as a songwriting team.

In an interview with Songfacts, Williams shared details of the song’s creation. He explained, “Kenny’s sitting at the piano, turned to me, and played the intro to what became ‘You And Me Against The World.'”

He continued, “I just looked at him when he finished the intro and sang, ‘You and me against the world,’ and he hit another chord, and I went, ‘Sometimes it feels like you and me against the world.’ And we went on from there. It’s the first song we ever recorded, and God bless Helen Reddy; she had a big hit with it.”

Classic Song of the Day wrote, “Ascher and Williams wrote ‘You and Me Against the World’ as a fairly traditional love song. When singer Helen Reddy got hold of the song, however, she thought it came off as too paternalistic and turned it around to be about the love of a mother for her child. This is reinforced on the recording by her then 10-year-old daughter Traci saying, ‘I love you, mommy’ at the end of the track—and Reddy answering, ‘I love you too, baby.’”

The song became a touchstone of an era when single mothers were quietly navigating a changing society without much of a voice in popular music. Williams noted that the track “seems to really touch the single mother, you know?”

More than half a century after its release, “You and Me Against the World” remains far more than just a sweet slice of nostalgia. It stands as a gentle, enduring monument to the quiet strength of parenthood and the mothers who held everything together behind closed doors.

At its core, Helen Reddy’s song is a simple, enduring pledge that as long as family holds each other close, the rest of the world can wait. It remains one of the sweetest moments in ’70s radio.

Nirvana and Dolly Parton Recorded the Same Appalachian Folk Song—But Their Versions Were Worlds Apart

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 6:24am

Kurt Cobain and Dolly Parton couldn’t have had more different musical styles, but they had one song in common. The legendary artists both recorded live performances of an old Appalachian folk song, “Where Did You Sleep Last Night”—and they were released less than a year apart.

While Parton turned the song into a haunting bluegrass classic, Cobain’s Nirvana stripped the song down to make it one of the most unforgettable moments in rock history.

“Where Did You Sleep Last Night” dates back to the turn of the 20th century Appalachian Mountains, according to Slate, and it’s known under several titles.

A full-on murder ballad, the song includes the haunting lines, “My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me, tell me where did you sleep last night? … In the pines, in the pines, where the sun doesn’t shine and I shiver the whole night through.”

In 1993, Nirvana performed the song on a Hell’s Kitchen stage as part of an acoustic set for MTV’s Unplugged. It was the closing number—and an impactful one.

“This was written by my favorite performer,” Cobain prefaced the performance, crediting the song to a 1944 version recorded by folk and blues singer Lead Belly.  With his acoustic guitar in hand, the Nirvana frontman delivered a raw, intimate performance that featured whispers and anguished screams. Cobain then exited the stage, refusing to return for an encore.

“I really tried to get him to do an encore,” Unplugged producer Alex Coletti told Guitar World in 2024. “But Kurt just wasn’t into it. I was just doing my job for MTV at that point, trying to get that one extra song in the can, to see if the night could produce one more gem. The pleading went on for about five minutes. Finally Kurt said, ‘I can’t top that last song.’ And when he said that I backed off. ‘Cause I knew he was right.”

Nirvana Unplugged in New York featuring “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” was the first posthumous Nirvana album released following Cobain’s death in 1994.

Months after Nirvana’s live performance, Parton performed the song under the title “In the Pines” for her 1994 live album Heartsongs (Live From Home).

The country singer brought the old song back to its storytelling roots for a performance that was very different from Nirvana’s. It stemmed from a lifetime of singing the song with her parents, Robert and Avie Lee.

“I remember how we used to all gather ‘round when we was all together back home and sing the old-timey mountain songs,” Parton said on her self-titled 1976 TV variety show. “Songs Like ‘In the Pines’ and ‘Little Brown Jug,’ and all that stuff.”

After she recorded the song for her album, Parton later said, “I grew up singing that song in the Smoky Mountains, then I sang it with my family on my TV show back in the ’70s.”

More than 30 years after Nirvana and Parton’s live versions of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night/In the Pines” were recorded, both songs have special meaning for fans. For Cobain, it showed a more vulnerable side to the singer and his final TV appearance, and for Parton, it paid homage to her connection to the Appalachian Mountains and traditions that shaped her music.

1975 Power Ballad, Reimagined into a No.1 Celine Dion Song, Is Still a Powerful Hit 51 Years Later

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 6:05am

Six years after she last headlined a full concert, Celine Dion stepped back onto a stage Saturday night in Nanterre, just outside Paris, and closed the night the way generations of fans hoped she still could: an a cappella run through “All by Myself.”

The moment came late in a career-spanning show opening Dion’s return engagement at an arena just outside Paris, her first full concert since revealing in December 2022 that she’d been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological condition that had made touring, and at times even walking, difficult. Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Aya Nakamura, and astronaut Thomas Pesquet were among the roughly 30,000 people in the crowd. Earlier in the night, overcome during “On Ne Change Pas,” Dion told the audience in French, “I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. I don’t keep my promises.”

Clips of the “All by Myself” moment spread fast online afterward, with fans in the comments landing on two reactions that amounted to the same thing: her voice has changed, and it barely mattered. Several noted she was singing in a noticeably lower key than her 1996 recording, something many chalked up to her ongoing health battle. Others focused purely on the moment itself, calling it one of the most emotional comebacks they’d ever watched.

@celine_world_fan

That was very impresive! I didn’t think she would be able to sing this song again in 2026. The show was incredible. 10/10. Céline you will always be the most impresive woman on this planet! #celinedion #paris #comeback #allbymyself #highnote

Eric Carmen wrote and recorded “All by Myself” in 1975, built around a melody borrowed from the second movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a detail that later required Carmen to add the Rachmaninoff estate to the songwriting credits. Carmen’s original peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1976.

Dion’s version arrived two decades later, produced by David Foster for her 1996 album Falling Into You. It became one of the defining vocal showcases of her career, topping Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks in 1997 and cracking the Hot 100’s top five.

1984 Power Ballad, Rejected by Kenny Rogers, Became a Band's Career-Defining Comeback Hit

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 6:03am

Before it became one of Chicago’s most beloved ballads, “You’re the Inspiration” nearly took a very different path.

The tune, written by Peter Cetera and David Foster, was originally intended for country icon Kenny Rogers.

At the time, Cetera had been collaborating with Rogers and believed the emotional, slow-building ballad would be a natural fit for his signature style.

However, Rogers ultimately passed on recording the track, opening the door for Chicago to lay claim to the song.

When it was released in 1984, it marked a huge turning point for the band as part of their Chicago 17 era, their fourteenth studio album.

“You’re the Inspiration” came at the right time, becoming a shining example of their evolution from jazz-rock roots to a more pop-forward sound.

As audiences loved it, it also brought them commercial success. The third single from the album climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it spent 22 weeks and 23 weeks, respectively.

“16 and 17 were their most popular albums. Peter Cetera and David Foster seemed to be magic together. Great album sound, hugely produced. Very, very different from Chicago-Chicago 15. I loved 17 and 16, but was a Foster fan since ‘79 and Chicago from WAY back. That voice…. so great” one fan wrote on Reddit.

It quickly became one of the band’s signature songs, with heartfelt lyrics, impressive chord progressions and harmonies, and a chorus that emphasized Chicago’s comeback, all while introducing them to a new generation of listeners.

It also won Foster and Cetera honors from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in the most performed songs category.

Cetera reflected on the inspiration behind the tune, noting that he “was writing things about, ‘Michelangelo you should know, Michelangelo.’ And I came up with, oh…you’re the inspiration! [So, I] came back with the words, worked on this melody, and came back and presented the song. And [Kenny] basically didn’t have the time or didn’t want to do it. Good for me!”

Over the span of four decades, the song has continued to be a nostalgic hit, appearing on wedding playlists and throughout pop culture moments, with its most recent inclusion supporting another comeback—Ted Lasso Season 4.

The song, widely considered one of the era’s most iconic power ballads and even ranked on SiriusXM’s list of the “Top 500 Songs of the ’80s,” plays softly in the background of the second episode, during a heartfelt and pivotal moment as Jason Sudeikis’ Ted reconnects with best friend/soulmate/fellow coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) at the pub upon returning to England to coach the AFC Richmond women’s soccer team.

As they say, one man’s pass is another band’s treasure.

1979 The Cars Song, Never Released as a Single, Remains a Fan Favorite 47 Years Later

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 5:38am

In 1979, The Cars’ second studio album, Candy-O, featured the hits “Let’s Go” and “It’s All I Can Do,” but it was the album’s final track that would take on a life of its own. “Dangerous Type” was never released as a single, but its hypnotic guitar riff and cool, understated vocals helped turn the album closer into a fan favorite that endures 47 years later.

Written by Ric Ocasek, “Dangerous Type” features a memorable riff seemingly inspired by the T. Rex classic “Bang a Gong (Get It On).” In the Studio With Redbeard even described the repetitive riff as “a musical nod to T. Rex’s Marc Bolan.”

Billboard also weighed in, noting that The Cars made “inspired use of one of the genre’s defining riffs”—as well as an understated chorus that is repeated throughout the song. Ocasek “runs through the four-line hook”— “She’s a lot like you/the dangerous type/she’s a lot like you/come on and hold me tight”— 10 different times during the song’s four-and-a half minutes, according to Rolling Stone.

Ocasek once explained his songwriting style, admitting to Rolling Stone, “We’re not what you’d call a free-form jam band. We try to be precise and tight, but that doesn’t make our music ‘stiff or ‘calculated.’ My way of songwriting — even if it seems overly obsessed with form and structure — is just as emotional to me as soul music may be to someone else.”

As for “Dangerous Type’s” glam-rock swagger mixed with an undercurrent of anxiety, Ocasek told High Fidelity, “That’s because I’m probably a very anxious person.”

RELATED: The Cars 1978 Classic Became a Career-Defining Anthem

The Cars guitarist Elliot Easton revealed that the band began playing “Dangerous Type” on tour before it was recorded, and that he perfected his guitar solo during those shows.

“We’d been playing the song live,” Easton told Guitar Player. “The first album was out, and so we were touring, but we weren’t introducing too many new songs that weren’t on the [first] album. ‘Dangerous Type’ was one of the few that we were playing then, and I’m sure that I started blocking out what I was going to do for the solo. I just refined it and nailed it down for the record, which we did in L.A. Cherokee Studios.”

Nearly 50 years after its release, “Dangerous Type” remains a beloved part of The Cars’ catalog—a fan-favorite deep cut with a hypnotic guitar hook that continues to captivate listeners decades later.

Aldi's Massive 6-Piece Comforter Set Brings All of the Cottagecore Coziness to Your Bedroom

Sun, 09/13/2026 - 5:31am

Can I ask a question? Why can’t a bedding set just come with everything you need to make the bed look, well, done? These days, getting a comforter and its matching shams in the same package can feel downright generous. But if you’ve ever tried to recreate that layered, styled-bed look you see in catalogs and on Pinterest, you know a comforter is really only the beginning.

A well-made bed usually involves a few different players: the comforter or duvet for warmth and the main visual moment, shams to give the pillows some height, a coverlet or quilt folded at the foot for another layer of texture and color, plus those decorative pillows that always seem to multiply when you’re not looking. And, of course, there are the sheets and pillowcases underneath it all.

Kirkton House 6-Piece Comforter and Coverlet Set in Checker, $39.99 at Aldi Kirkton House Comforter and Coverlet Set

Aldi

So wouldn’t it be nice if one package could actually get you most of the way there? That’s what makes a six-piece bedding set particularly intriguing. Aldi’s Kirkton House Comforter and Coverlet Set includes a comforter, two shams, a coverlet and two quilted shams—basically, a head start on that layered look without requiring a second shopping trip.

The set comes in both King and Queen sizing, both priced at $39.99, which is a great value. What’s really nice about the checker print, which is featured on the comforter and regular shams, is that it’s a warm neutral that pairs well with anything. It provides a cottage-like aesthetic that makes a room feel all kinds of cozy.

The quilted coverlet is a solid dark-ish taupe, and the quilted shams follow suit in the same colorway.

For the most styled look, start with your sheets and sleeping pillows, then spread the comforter over the bed as your main layer. Instead of tucking the coverlet underneath, fold it across the bottom third of the bed. That little bit of layering makes the bed look more finished and gives you some extra texture and dimension without much effort.

Up top, put the two regular shams behind your sleeping pillows, then place the quilted shams in front. The different textures keep the pillow arrangement from looking too matchy-matchy, while the coverlet adds another visual layer at the foot of the bed.
