Cher Proved Mike Nichols Wrong After He Refused to Cast Her

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 6:06am

Director Mike Nichols essentially told Cher to “snap out of it” when she asked him for advice on how to launch her acting career after music.

Originally known as one half of the duo Sonny & Cher, Cher hoped to move beyond her variety-show TV persona from The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and become a serious actor — something Nichols doubted she could do.

Cher recently recounted on The Howard Stern Showhow she was with David Geffen trying to get an audition. “We had all these friends, high as you can go — nobody wanted to,” she recalled. So she “went to Mike Nichols because he was doing a movie, and I said, ‘I’d like to audition for the part.’ He said, ‘Cher, there’s only two kinds of women, and you’re not the right one.’”

Ouch.

Nichols felt so strongly that he wouldn’t even consider allowing Cher to audition. But she recalled him as “sweet, because that’s who he was. He said, ‘But I’ll keep you in mind.’ I said, ‘Well, you know what? I’m talented, and someday you’re going to be sorry.’”

Ultimately, Nichols granted Cher an audition for his 1975 film The Fortune. He passed on casting her, but she finally landed the role of Dolly Pelliker in the 1983 Academy Award-nominated film Silkwood. Cher won the Golden Globe for Silkwood and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Of course, the rest is history. Cher went on to star in 20 feature films, with breakout performances in Moonstruck, The Witches of Eastwick, Burlesque, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. In 1988, Cher won the Oscar for Best Actress for Moonstruck.

In addition to Silkwood, Cher won a Golden Globe for The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in 1974 and Best Actress in a Motion Picture for Moonstruck in 1988.

Was there anyone who supported her dreams to act in the early days? She recalled how director Francis Ford Coppola and actress Shelley Winters were more supportive, with Winters telling her, "If you want to be serious, and you want to be an actress, get your ass to New York."

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Hit With $2.1 Million in Property Liens: Report

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 6:04am

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ upstate New York property has been hit with more than $2.1 million in unpaid contractor debt, The Daily Mail reports.

Westchester County filings show five separate contractors and subcontractors filed mechanic's liens against the property in April 2026. According to official records reviewed by the publication, the outstanding claims total exactly $2,108,856.63.

The 110-acre estate was purchased through an LLC beginning in 2018. During a previous town planning board hearing, Lively described the site as a "beautiful buffer" for their family. Plans for the site include a main residence, a pool house, a separate gym, geothermal heating, and custom copper roofing.

According to the filed documents, the unpaid work spans multiple construction sectors across the 110-acre estate:

  • Flower Construction (FlowCon Inc.): This firm filed the largest single lien against the property, totaling $1,356,157.54. The scope of their extensive contract included structural framing, the installation of HVAC systems, comprehensive plumbing and electrical work, as well as drywall, masonry, and waterproofing. They were also responsible for the property's aesthetic finishes, including painting and high-end millwork.
  • Specialized Subcontractors: A group of four additional contractors filed claims regarding technical aspects of the estate's development. These filings seek outstanding payments for custom copper roofing, complex drainage and septic systems, geothermal excavation, and structural steel fabrication. Detailed finish work, such as rough carpentry and trim installation, is also cited in the unpaid claims.

County records indicate that while construction activity on the site was consistent throughout late 2025, all work effectively ceased between December 2025 and early 2026. The liens were subsequently filed in April 2026, bringing the total outstanding debt to $2,108,856.63.

The Daily Mail notes these property liens arrive immediately following a high-profile legal battle between Lively and her It Ends With Us co-star, Justin Baldoni. With the outlet claiming: “According to reports, no money changed hands in the settlement despite months of explosive allegations, leaked messages and legal filings.”

The dispute cost both sides tens of millions of dollars in legal fees and ended in a settlement earlier this month, just two weeks before the scheduled trial. Court records show Lively is currently continuing her push to recover legal fees and damages tied to Baldoni's failed countersuit, after a judge denied her latest request to submit additional filings.

Parade has reached out to representatives for the contractors, Reynolds and Lively for comment.

Heinz Just Revived Its Iconic Glass Ketchup Bottle—for a Limited Time

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 6:01am

Heinz is rolling out a familiar favorite this grilling season, one that fans haven't seen in decades, but only at Walmart.

The popular condiment brand has been paired with mealtime favorites for 157 years and to celebrate, it's going back to its roots and bringing back one of its most recognizable—and now rare—releases.

This morning, Heinz announced a limited-time revival of its iconic glass ketchup bottles.

Heinz Is Reviving Its Iconic Glass Bottles for a Limited Time

When Heinz first hit shelves in 1876, it was sold in glass bottles to showcase its rich, hearty recipe. While its packaging changed with the times, it wasn't until the mid-1980s that it switched to a plastic, squeezable bottle, similar to what's offered today.

But now, 150 years later, it's reviving its glass packaging as part of Heinz's new “157 Years of Being Food’s Best Friend” campaign, which the company said is "inspired by the rituals and fan behaviors that have made the brand a mealtime staple for generations."

Heinz's iconic glass ketchup bottle returned for a brief period in 2011, and after over a decade off shelves, it will be available exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide beginning May 20, while supplies last (prices may vary).

1982 Yacht Rock Masterpiece, Ranked Among the Greatest Songs of All Time, Hid an Incredible 20 Year Secret

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 5:57am

Few songs capture the breezy, sun-soaked sound of yacht rock quite like this 1982 classic. But behind its smooth exterior lies a surprising twist.

The track’s most iconic musical moment wasn’t entirely new at all. It borrowed from a song written more than 20 years earlier, hiding in plain sight inside one of the soft rock’s most celebrated hits.

Michael McDonald's “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” is considered one of the greatest Yacht Rock songs ever written. But before the genre even emerged, McDonald's biggest solo hit was a soft-rock blockbuster that leaned heavily on a 1962 tune penned by an iconic songwriting duo.

"I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 100 in October 1982. Additionally, the song would rank among the Best Yacht Rock Songs of All Time on the Music Influence Substack.

According to American Songwriter, McDonald penned the song with Ed Sanford of the Sanford-Townsend Band. The men used a refrain from a 1962 song, "I Keep Forgettin'" performed by Chuck Jackson and written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

However, McDonald didn't just borrow elements from the original Lieber and Stoller song. He credited the duo as additional songwriters on the tune.

The song tells a story about a couple whose relationship has ended. McDonald plays the part of the man who is convinced they're still together when they are apart.

"I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)"  featured Toto members Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro, along with Greg Phillinganes, Louis Johnson, and McDonald’s sisterMaureen.

After years of singing and performing with the Doobie Brothers, this song was McDonald's breakout solo single after the band split in 1982 reported Songfacts.

Ironically, McDonald's hit would also move forward into the future when, 12 years after its release, the song was sampled by Warren G and Nate Dogg on their 1994 hit "Regulate."

Warren G told Buzzfeed, "My parents used to play 'I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)' when I was a kid, and that's one of the songs that stuck in my head. I was thinking I wanted to do something different instead of the same old hip hop. I thought, 'Why don't I take a song that I liked from back then and recreate it in hip hop style?'"

That quiet musical connection adds a new layer of appreciation to an already timeless track. For yacht rock fans, including those who love the unmistakable sound of Michael McDonald, it is another reminder that some of the genre’s smoothest moments have deeper roots.

Psychologist Says That People Who Rewatch the Same TV Show Over and Over Again Have These 7 Traits

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 5:55am

Once a really good TV show ends, it's normal for a lot of people to move on to the next one. But if it provided laughs, comfort or a lot of emotion you hung onto, what's really stopping you from simply starting Season 1, Episode 1 again?

You could argue that starting a new show is better. New characters, surprising plot lines and the excitement of not knowing what will happen next. But some of the shows we hold dear to our hearts are just that much better to binge-watch all over again.

We all have free will and perhaps a bit of time to spare time to rewatch TV shows, especially the ones that mean something to us. But is there a deeper reason why we do this?

Rewatching our favorite TV shows can allow us to fulfill all sorts of emotional needs, such as nostalgia and the reassurance of knowing how something will end up. It definitely makes sense why we might turn back to these shows, especially at hard times or whenever we want to revisit certain beloved characters.

But what else does it indicate? Do we rewatch shows because they give us the certainty that real life often can't? Do you understand yourself better through the development of fictional characters? Or is watching the same cast like catching up with a dear friend? A psychologist shares what this behavior says about us, including seven traits people might have if they rewatch the same TV show over and over again.

Related: Psychologist Says if You Rehearse Conversations in Your Head Before They Happen, You Likely Have These 8 Traits

What Is the Psychology of Rewatching Shows?

It's true that turning an old TV show back on can be a great thrill for most of us. But what does it suggest about our brains?

Dr. Danielle Roeske, PsyD, explains that this behavior is rooted in wanting to have a kind of certainty, to be comforted in knowing exactly what is going to happen.

"When we rewatch a favorite show, we’re essentially giving our brains a gift of predictability," she explains. "Choosing something new requires our brains to work because we don’t know the characters, the plot, or the tone and we can’t be sure we’ll enjoy it. A familiar show removes all of that uncertainty."

Speaking from a more psychological lens, Dr. Roeske points out this is a form of "emotional self-regulation."

"The brain releases dopamine, not just in response to new rewards, but also in anticipation of known ones, so even before you press play, your nervous system and brain are already beginning to anticipate the things you love about your favorite show," she says.

Most of all, revisiting these shows makes us perceive that we're coming back to something so familiar that it makes us feel like we're no longer alone in some cases.

"The characters can also feel like old friends, which can genuinely ease stress, loneliness or emotional fatigue in a way that starting fresh with strangers in a new show simply can’t," she explains.

Is Rewatching the Same Show Emotionally Intelligent?

Carlos Barquero/Getty Images

Good news: rewatching the same shows might mean you have a hint of emotional intelligence (EQ), and that's never a bad thing. Dr. Roeske explains that being emotionally intelligent requires that you understand your feelings and needs. Rewatching a show to manage that could be seen as emotionally intelligent.

"Emotional intelligence at its core involves self-awareness, so understanding what you’re feeling and what you need, and the ability to self-regulate," she says. "Someone who recognizes they’re stressed, overwhelmed or emotionally depleted, and intentionally reaches for something they know will comfort them, is demonstrating emotional intelligence."

But it's also not so black and white. The psychologist says high-EQ people might also recognize that they should try new things in order to get out of a funk, for example.

"Emotional intelligence can also be attributed to those who like seeking out new experiences in alignment with trying new shows," she reveals. "It is not so much the pattern of television watching that determines emotional intelligence as much as the motivation, self-awareness, rigidity and flexibility that indicate a sense of internal and emotional groundedness."

Do People With Anxiety Watch the Same Shows?

It would make sense that people with anxiety watch the same shows over again, and if that's the case, Dr. Roeske says there's a "very clear psychological reason for this."

"Anxiety is rooted in uncertainty and the fear of unpredictable outcomes, so watching a TV show that you already know can help soothe anxious thoughts," she explains.

Returning to a show that you know and love is a comfort because you know nothing new is going to surprise you. For people with anxiety, it might be the one predictable thing that's really reliable.

"For someone whose nervous system is frequently in a heightened state, the predictability of a comforting show can feel genuinely regulating, almost like a reset button," says Dr. Roeske. "In this sense, the person has identified something that reliably helps them feel safe and they may return to it time and time again."

Is Rewatching a Show Over and Over Again a Sign of Mental Illness?

While consistently tuning into the same show over and over again isn't a sign of mental illness in any form, it can be a red flag if they're doing so to avoid real life.

"If someone is using excessive rewatching to completely avoid responsibilities, relationships or difficult emotions that they need to process, that’s worth exploring with a mental health professional and might need deeper attention," shares Dr. Roeske.

In fact, rewatching shows can be "completely healthy" and "quite common," she explains, so if you're worried that you should try something new, don't fret too much.

"When life feels uncertain or overwhelming, returning to a familiar show provides a sense of comfort and predictability that our brains genuinely crave," she tells Parade.

7 Common Traits of People Who Rewatch the Same TV Show Over and Over Again, Psychologist Reveals

If you repeat watching the same shows, you might have some of the traits that Dr. Roeske highlights below.

1. Empathetic

People who rewatch the same TV show over and over again have the tendency to be "highly empathetic," according to Dr. Roeske.

"When we return to the same characters and stories on TV, we tend to form deep emotional connections with those characters and their journeys, and we feel what they feel," she explains. "Their excitement, enjoyment and even their struggles feel like a shared experience."

2. Self-aware

Rewatching a show means that you know what you want, shares Dr. Roeske. In that case, individuals who practice this have a pretty "strong self-awareness."

"They typically know what they need emotionally and feel comfortable seeking it out, showing a meaningful form of emotional intelligence," she says.

3. Sensitive

Sensitive, or even anxious people, could very likely be show re-watchers. That's because they can take comfort in the fact that nothing will shock them or reveal something new that they haven't seen.

"The certainty of a known outcome is deeply soothing for a nervous system that’s frequently on high alert and familiar content in a TV show eliminates surprise," says Dr. Roeske.

Related: 7 Signs You’re Not ‘Too Sensitive’—You’re Actually Highly Perceptive, a Psychologist Says

4. Sentimental

Sentimental, as well as being a bit nostalgic, is a trait most commonly found in people who frequently rewatch shows. That particular show might remind them or something or someone, and that brings upon a sense of yearning for some, according to Dr. Roeske.

"Re-watchers often associate certain TV shows with specific memories, people or chapters of their lives. Returning to that is a way of reconnecting with something meaningful," she explains.

5. Detail-oriented

Perhaps our obsession with some shows reveals a lot more than we think. According to Dr. Roeske, rewatching them might make us more detail-oriented.

"Watching something again with fresh eyes often reveals details that we didn’t notice the first time, and finding something new can be really enjoyable and satisfying," she notes.

Not only that, but individuals who watch the same shows again could notice patterns in relationships on screens that mean something in their own lives.

"Similarly, they may be highly attuned to the nuances and emotional dynamics in relationships that then play out in their own interpersonal relations," she explains.

6. Loyal

Dr. Roeske explains some show re-watchers "might be more loyal" as individuals because they often return to the same things over and over again—not just TV shows.

"The same way they return to a favorite TV show, re-watchers may often also return to the same restaurants, the same vacation spots and the same people," she states. "Loyalty and familiarity could show up across many areas of their lives."

7. Creatures of habit

Some of these people tend to be creatures of habit, says Dr. Roeske. It is common that they want to repeat similar routines and patterns in their lives.

"Re-watchers tend to thrive on routine in other areas of their lives too, like with a favorite coffee order, comfort meal, book and more," she shares. "For these individuals, repetition isn’t boring; it’s grounding for them."

Why Is It Called a Bomb Pop? The 70-Year History Behind America's Favorite Summer Treat

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 5:44am

On July 4, 2026, the United States will celebrate its 250th birthday—and Americans are gearing up for what's being called the biggest Independence Day celebration in U.S. history. From Salute to America 250 on the National Mall to drone shows, tall ship parades, and millions of barbecues and block parties, Summer 2026 is shaping up to be the most red, white and blue summer in a generation!

Of course, one of the biggest icons every Fourth of July is the Bomb Pop. Just like the American flag, the flavor-packed popsicle has three colors—red, white and blue—and has been a fixture for 70 years. (Depending on where you grew up, you might know it as a Firecracker instead.)

And just in time for the big celebration, 5-hour ENERGY® is hard launching a brand-new flavor inspired by the classic treat: Firework Freeze. I like to think of it as the grown-up version of the Bomb Pop. Just like a firework, it blasted me right back to my childhood with its bold, juicy cherry flavor that turns into citrusy lime before it finishes off with a
blue raspberry tang.

The limited-time Extra Strength shot packs 230mg of caffeine—about as much as a premium 12-ounce cup of coffee. It's got zero sugar—but tons of flavor—and B-vitamins and nutrients to help you stay energized from the morning parade with the kids to an afternoon at the beach and all the way through the big barbecue and firework party at night.

But before you crack open a bottle, let's rewind to the surprisingly intense backstory behind the iconic popsicle that started it all.

The Bomb Pop Origin Story Just like Saved by the Bell's Zack and Kelly, the Bomb Pop is an American institution!

Photo by William Nation on Getty Images

My favorite part about the Bomb Pop is that it wasn't concocted via a corporate test kitchen with focus groups and flavor scientists—it was born during a '50s summer road trip.

In 1955, two employees from Merritt Foods—a Kansas City-based ice cream novelty company—were driving from Memphis back home to Kansas City and brainstorming ideas for a new kind of ice pop. D.S. "Doc" Abernethy and James S. Merritt wanted something eye-catching, multi-flavored and unmistakably American. By the time they arrived home, they had it: a red, white and blue rocket-shaped popsicle with six fins, three stacked layers of flavor and a name that perfectly captured the moment. And on July 30, 1955, the Bomb Pop was officially born.

Believe it or not, the design and name were totally intentional. That's because in 1955, the Cold War was happening. Nuclear tension was a daily topic of conversation and American patriotism had reached sky-high levels. Abernethy and Merritt leaned all the way in—designing their popsicle to look like a missile and naming it after the very thing the country was terrified of. Looking back, it sounds crazy, but it helped ease the fears of kids nationwide—and Americans young and old simply could not get enough.

The Bomb Pop vs. Firecracker Drama, Explained

If you're from New Jersey, you know all about the Taylor ham vs. pork roll debate. When it comes to three-layered popsicles, we've got Bomb Pop vs. Firecracker—and surprisingly, it's a pretty contentious rivalry.

For over 30 years, the Bomb Pop dominated freezer aisles and ice cream truck windows across the country. But the lore truly begins when American patriotism surged again as the Berlin Wall began to fall—signaling the end of the Cold War and a major win for the U.S.

That's when Popsicle—a much bigger and more widely distributed brand—launched its own three-layered, rocket-shaped treat: the Firecracker. Same cherry, lime and blue raspberry combo. Same exact vibe, except packaged under a different name and a slightly different shape.

Bomb Pop or Firecracker? Even the ice cream man can't always tell at first glance!

Photo by Ronda Churchill on Getty Images

Naturally, a frozen arms race ensued. Throughout the '90s and 2000s, the two brands competed fiercely to win over American consumers—and created a rivalry so intense (think Yankees/Red Sox) that it eventually landed in a courtroom.

In 2014, Unilever—the maker of the Firecracker—filed a complaint against Wells, the creator of the Bomb Pop. Their argument was that the Bomb Pop's packaging was "confusingly similar" to the Firecracker's. Wells fired back with a counterclaim, arguing that Unilever was falsely advertising the Firecracker as "The Original"—when it really wasn't. In a win for the underdogs, the court ultimately sided with Wells.

So to settle the debate once and for all: The Bomb Pop is the original, invented in 1955. The Firecracker came along 34 years later, in 1989. But because Popsicle's distribution is so massive, the Firecracker name took over in many parts of the country.

Who Makes Bomb Pops Today? The Summer I Turned Pretty's Gavin Casalegno celebrates National Bomb Pop Day in 2023.

Photo by John Lamparski on Getty Images

When Merritt Foods closed its Kansas City plant in 1991, the Bomb Pop nearly disappeared for good—until Wells Dairy (now Wells Enterprises) of Le Mars, Iowa, swooped in and acquired the brand. Wells—also the parent company behind Blue Bunny ice cream—has been producing Bomb Pops ever since.

And under Wells' ownership, the original three-layered treat has multiplied into a full lineup. There are now nine main Bomb Pop flavors—plus four extra-intense "Extremes" varieties for kids who like a challenge. The current lineup includes Watermelon, Banana Fudge, Hawaiian Punch, Nerds, Crush, Berry Burst, Candy Clash and—of course—the original Cherry, Lime and Blue Raspberry that started it all. There have even been collaborations along the way, including a Buzz Lightyear version released by Disney in 2003.

In 2005, Wells made it official by establishing National Bomb Pop Day. It's celebrated every year on the last Thursday of June, so mark your calendar!

5-hour ENERGY's New Firework Freeze Flavor is a Bomb Pop Lover's Dream 5-hour ENERGY's newest flavor—Firework Freeze—packs the perfect punch of 4th of July parade nostalgia.

There's something undeniably magical about chasing down an ice cream truck on a scorching hot summer afternoon. But in 2026, the average adult is more likely to be juggling morning errands with kids in tow, an afternoon at the pool or beach (where just packing the bag feels like its own herculean task), followed by a sports game and barbecue—all in one day. (I'm getting tired just thinking about it.)

That's exactly where Firework Freeze comes in. The brand-new 5-hour ENERGY flavor is a love letter to the classic Bomb Pop, reimagined as a 1.93 fl oz shot. Every sip delivers that same nostalgic three-flavor experience: bold, juicy cherry that gives way to a citrusy lime, then finishes with a crisp blue raspberry tang. Since it's sugar-free, you can save those calories for ribs and hot dogs. And the best part? Its compact size makes it perfect to bring on the go—and it won't ever melt in your purse or make your hands feel sticky.

Each shot has 230 mg of caffeine—that's around the same amount in a premium 12-ounce cup of java—and it's also packed with B-vitamins and essential nutrients to help fight fatigue and beat the heat on a 90-degree day.

I tried it myself and it tastes just like the Bomb Pops I grew up with. It's the kind of flavor that immediately transports you back to your childhood summers—except this time, you're an adult with responsibilities and a to-do list. Thankfully, this new flavor will help you tackle it all.

Firework Freeze is available now at the 5-hour ENERGY website and on Amazon. Grab a pack before they're gone—because just like summer, this flavor is only here for a limited time.

Kyle Cooke Reveals Why He Felt Relieved at the ‘Summer House’ Reunion

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 5:16am

After spending an entire season at the center of some of Summer House’s darkest relationship moments, Kyle Cooke is admitting there was one unexpected feeling he had walking into the reunion: relief.

Kyle confessed on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that he was “absolutely” relieved to be out of the hot seat after speculation surrounding his wife, Amanda Batula, and former friend West Wilson’s romance suddenly became the focus of the conversation instead.

From the Season 10 footage alone, Kyle admits he was prepared to be the bad guy and was ready for everyone to come for him, especially after hurling expletives at Amanda on more than one occasion. But West and Amanda's affair completely changed the trajectory, positioning him in a different light both on and off camera.

WWHL and Summer House reunion host Andy Cohen said he had planned "to go deep. I said that episode where you yelled at her, I was like, 'This is the darkest episode for Kyle,'" Andy said to Kyle. "Were you at all relieved to be out of the hot seat?"

"I think people are looking at things through a different lens..." Kyle says, finally admitting he's "absolutely" happy to have been out of the reunion "hot seat."

He added, "It's such a bittersweet situation. It sucks. But yes, it's great because I thought I was gonna have to wait a year...[to say] 'I'm so sorry.'"

"Well, it's like it's so hard to explain yourself when you're like misunderstood."

Andy wondered what he was missing because Kyle did have several combative moments this season, not only with Amanda but also during his fight with Carl Radke. WWHL co-guest Lindsay Hubbard explained that "it becomes evident when you watch tonight's episode, the In the City premiere...the reunion. Like he loves [Amanda] so much and the reunion is like strong," she shared. "Kyle is a terrible communicator."

But Kyle also says having the entire house come for him — especially those who aren't in relationships — pushes him over the edge. "Imagine filming with a bunch of people that don't understand," he added.

Part one of the Summer House reunion airs Tuesday, May 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

This Dog-Friendly City in the Midwest Has a Off-Leash Beach, National Park Trails and a Pup-Approved Brewery Scene

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 5:10am

I was born and raised in Cleveland, or “the Land,” as anyone from there will proudly call it, and lived there until I was in fifth grade. My family still lives just outside the city, so I’ve been going back for most of my life. When I had dogs, they were part of those trips, too, and Cleveland made it easy to bring them along, with lakefront trails, dog-friendly patios, roomy parks and neighborhoods where a good walk is part of the day.

A good day might start with a walk along Edgewater Park, where the western end of the beach is dog-friendly, then move into Ohio City for West Side Market and a patio beer, or over to Tremont or Gordon Square for shaded sidewalks, shops, and dinner outside. You can still do the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, catch views from the Flats, and build in enough outdoor time that your dog is part of the trip instead of something you have to work around.

“Cleveland is incredibly unique because it effortlessly blends city living with vast amounts of nature,” says Dawn Eischen, APR, MS, of the Lyndhurst Animal Clinic team in Lyndhurst, Ohio.

Related: Best Dog-Friendly Vacations In The U.S. For Families

Why Now?

National Park Service

Pet owners aren’t just looking for hotels that allow dogs anymore. They want trips where the dog can actually come along: to the park, to lunch, to the brewery, to the neighborhood they planned to wander anyway. Cleveland makes that easier than a lot of cities. There’s the lake, there are real neighborhoods to walk, and there are enough patios and parks that you don’t have to build the whole weekend around your dog’s limitations.

“You never have to choose between a fun urban experience and giving your dog the outdoor space they need. We have a massive network of parks, very walkable neighborhoods like Tremont and Ohio City, and an amazing local patio culture where dogs are generally welcome to join the fun,” says Eischen.

There’s another reason to think about traveling with dogs right now, too. Millions of dogs enter U.S. shelters each year, according to the ASPCA, and older dogs often wait longer to be adopted. Kris Rotonda, founder of Jordan’s Way, knows that reality well. His dog Jordan spent 3.5 years in a shelter before he adopted her, and they had 11 years together. Now, through Jordan’s Way, he’s traveling the country to bring attention to shelters and the dogs people too often overlook.

That easygoing lifestyle is also why Cleveland stands out as an incredible place to live with a dog, not just visit with one.

“Because Cleveland is highly affordable compared to other major metro areas, pet owners can often afford homes with actual, spacious backyards,” Eischen says. “On top of that, we have a wonderful Midwestern sense of community. Clevelanders are famously loyal and friendly, and having a dog here is the ultimate icebreaker. Your neighbors actually want to stop and chat, and the local coffee shop barista probably knows your dog's name by heart.”

For dog lovers, that may be Cleveland’s strongest selling point. It is not just pet-friendly on paper. It is a city where dogs actually mold into daily life, from lakefront mornings to patio afternoons to neighborhood walks where everyone seems to know your pup first.

Best Place To Stay That’s Pet-Friendly View this post on Instagram

For the least complicated stay with access to the restaurants and allure of downtown, book Kimpton Schofield downtown. Its pet policy is unusually generous: no pet fee, no weight limit, no size limit, and no cap on how many pets can stay with you. Plus, they offer pet beds, treats, and water bowls in every room. Location wise, it puts you close to East 4th, Playhouse Square, restaurants, and quick walks for the furrballs when you need them.

If you want more space and a more neighborhood-type feel, look west. Tremont Black gives you a rooftop patio in one of Cleveland’s best dining neighborhoods, while this dog-friendly Lakewood two-bedroom puts you in a walkable area near bars, shops, and renovated Edgewater Park. For something quieter, this Tremont cottage keeps you close to coffee, restaurants, the Towpath Trail, and downtown without feeling like a hotel stay.

One of Cleveland’s biggest draws, for both locals, tourists and pups alike, is the lakefront. “A lot of people don't realize Cleveland sits right on Lake Erie,” Eischen says. “Spots like the dog beach at Edgewater Park allow pups to run off-leash and splash in the waves with the downtown skyline in the background.” Edgewater, which also boasts a huge playground and the iconic "Cleveland" sign with the skyline behind it, is a great space to ground yourself on the lake while still being just a few minutes from Lakewood on one side and downtown on the other.

Beyond the parks, Cleveland also has an impressive trail system that connects the city to the suburbs. Cuyahoga Valley National Park sits just south of town, and, as Eischen points out, “is one of the only National Parks in the entire country that actually allows dogs on its hiking trails.” That makes it easier than ever to plan a jog, walk, or even a picnic without needing accommodations for your pets.

“In a lot of major cities, taking your dog to a significant hiking spot requires a massive day trip and hours of traffic,” Eischen says. “In Cleveland, you can easily grab a coffee on a dog-friendly patio downtown and be hiking past a waterfall in a deep forest just 20 minutes later.”

The Cleveland Metroparks system is just as important. Locals call it the “Emerald Necklace,” a chain of reservations that wraps around the city and suburbs with trails, picnic areas, rivers, forests and lakefront access. “No matter which neighborhood you choose to settle down in, you are almost guaranteed to be within a few minutes of hundreds of miles of protected, dog-friendly trails,” Eischen says. And when the weather turns, Taps & Tails gives dogs a place to play indoors or out. “You never feel like your dog is a burden to bring along; it’s the norm,” she says. “You never feel like your dog is a burden to bring along; it's the norm,” Eischen says.

Where The People And Pups Can Eat

Cleveland’s food scene has exploded over the past few years. Michelin inspectors have already started visiting restaurants in Cleveland and other Midwest cities for the new American Great Lakesguide, which means the city’s dining scene is getting looked at on a much bigger stage. For travelers with dogs, the good news is that some of Cleveland’s most useful pet-friendly stops are in the same neighborhoods you’d want to eat through anyway: Ohio City, Tremont, Larchmere, Gordon Square and the lakefront.

In Ohio City, start with West Side Market, then make the short walk to Great Lakes Brewing Company, where the tree-lined patio is dog-friendly and the pup menu includes a small cup of whipped cream with a spent-grain dog treat. Nano Brew is nearby for burgers, 24 beers on draft, and a multistory patio and beer garden; BringFido notes dogs are welcome both inside and outside. For river views, BrewDog Cleveland Outpost has 28 taps, fire pits, outdoor games and a patio where dogs are welcome.

Closer to the lake, Terrestrial Brewing is one of the most obvious dog-person stops, with a spacious patio, lakefront views, and a location near Edgewater and the Towpath Trail. Whiskey Island Still & Eatery is another good warm-weather option, with a huge outdoor patio, live music, lake views, and a family- and pet-friendly setup. On the east side, Batuqui in Larchmere has a front patio where dogs can sit outside while you order Brazilian dishes like Xim Xim, Churrasco Misto, Calamari Samba and caipirinhas. Poppy, also in Larchmere, works for a prettier dinner or cocktails outside, with one of the area’s larger patios and garden-heavy setting.

Steve McQueen’s ‘The Getaway’ Is Getting a Netflix Remake, and Film Buffs Are Furious

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 4:49am

Netflix plans to remake The Getaway. The streamer just announced a new version of the 1972 crime flick, and fans of the film have strong opinions. The original is a ‘70s cult classic, directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring  Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw. The internet thinks trying to copy that cinematic blend of sweat and shotguns is a terrible idea, and they want the studio to know about it.

One user pointed out that you cannot separate the movie from the man who filmed it: “I don't even love this movie, but it's definitively Sam Peckinpah and you'll have to change a lot to get it to work without him. I don't know how much was changed in the Baldwin/Bassinger version but I know the reception wasn't great. Ditto the Straw Dogs remake. Whether you think the things Peckinpah did in those movies worked with him doing them or not, I don't think you can argue someone else could have done them better. You could make a pretty compelling relationship drama without the Al Lettieri character, and it could be really interesting and challenging, but there's not much action in that.”

That 1994 remake with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger is the elephant in the room. It tanked, both commercially and critically. Another commenter cut straight to the point: “It's was done in the 90s with Basinger and Baldwin. And badly. Why do it again? McQueen and McGraw were PERFECT.”

But the thread shifted when people remembered the source material. Jim Thompson wrote the 1958 book, and his ending was not a happy ride into Mexico. It was a surrealist horror show about an underground city of criminals who end up turning on each other.

That book angle gave a few fans a reason to pay attention: “Idk if you know, but it's based on a book. The Peckinpah movie is alright, and of course cinematically nothing will compete even with mid Peckinpah, but the book has a pretty sweet, surreal ending, that if adapted would make it a pretty unique 'heroes on the run' film.”

If Netflix stays true to the book instead of trying to remake the film, they might find something new, the internet mused. Another user agreed that the text belongs to anyone brave enough to shoot it: “You know the Peckinpah film was an adaptation, right? The 'perfect film' wasn't a new idea. Books are the perfect thing to be adapted by different people in different eras with different interpretations. Neither of the previous two adaptations were faithful to the book.”

The remake is already in motion. “Peter Craig will pen the script. The original movie starred McQueen and Ali McGraw in a twisty two-handed as an ex-con and his wife who rob a Texas bank as a condition for the man’s release," a Redditor commented. "After a deadly double-cross, the couple is forced to go on the run as spurned thieves, violent thugs and the police all give chase across an overheated state.”

Craig wrote The Batman, so he has a history of dark thrillers. Director Philip Barantini is behind the camera. He made Boiling Point, that is famous for having one continuous, 90-minute shot without cuts.

Because of that crew, Reddit is leaving the door open. Just a crack. “That is a tough one to remake, but Barantini at least makes it more interesting than a normal studio recycle.”

It seems film buffs don’t want a copy of the iconic Steve McQueen saga. But fans think that if Netflix goes full psycho noir, they might actually enjoy the ride.

Amazon's $35 Metal 2-Tier Plant Stand is 'Perfect' For Greenery, Shoes, and Garden Tools

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 4:45am

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

If you've been looking for a better way to display your plants, a tiered plant shelf might be just the upgrade you need. While a single stand works well for one pot, a shelf-style design gives you space to display several plants at once in a more organized way.

The Giantex 2-Tier Metal Plant Stand at Amazon is a great option. With two shelf levels for display, it helps give your greenery a more intentional, neatly arranged look instead of leaving pots scattered throughout the house. The stand is currently on sale for $35, marked down from $52.

Made from steel with a rust-resistant finish, this stand is built for both indoor and outdoor use. It measures 25 inches long by 12 inches wide and 24.5 inches high, making it easy to fit into a corner, entryway, or compact outdoor area without feeling bulky or intrusive.

The two-tier design helps you make better use of vertical space while keeping plants organized and properly spaced. Taller pots work well on the lower shelf, while smaller planters, herbs, or décor pieces fit neatly on top. The upper shelf supports up to 33 pounds, and the lower shelf can hold up to 44 pounds.

While it’s designed with plants in mind, shoppers say it’s surprisingly versatile. Some use it as a shoe rack by the front door, while others keep gardening tools, books, or outdoor accessories stored on it. One reviewer shared that it works “perfectly on a covered patio to store shoes and garden tools.”

Assembly is another feature that consistently gets praise in reviews. “Easy to put together, sturdy, looks great — so happy to have more floor space,” one Amazon shopper wrote. Another added, “Love this shelving, perfect for my plants. So easy to assemble. All parts worked like a charm. [I] will probably purchase another one.”

It also has adjustable foot pads to help keep things steady on uneven surfaces while protecting floors from scratches. Plus, the smooth side handles make it easy to move around whenever you feel like switching up your plant setup indoors or outside.

1978 Rock Classic Snubbed by Some Radio Stations After Legendary Rocker Refused to Change Lyric

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 4:33am

In 1978, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released the song  “Listen to Her Heart.” The second single from the band’s sophomore album, You’re Gonna Get It, was a moderate hit, peaking at No. 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Oct 21, 1978. And while it ultimately became a classic rock radio staple, it could have been a bigger hit at the time of its release.

According to Ultimate Classic Rock, ahead of its release, Petty was asked by his record company to change one of the lines in the song, but refused, which “meant the song got less airplay” on the radio, most notably AM stations.

In a 1978 interview with Rolling Stone, Petty revealed that he was asked to change the song’s opening line, "You think you're gonna take her away/With your money and your cocaine,” to “with your money and your champagne.”  He took issue with the change because he felt it didn’t make sense.

"I mean, first of all, it's anti-cocaine. I don't even like the stuff,” Petty said at the time. “And second, what's champagne going for these days? Two bucks a bottle?"

Petty once explained to the Los Angeles Times why he refused to change the lyric in “Listen to Her Heart.”

“This was a love song. I wrote it after my wife at the time told me about going to a party at [a famous musician’s] house and there being all this cocaine around, and I think that kicked off the opening line of the song,” he shared. “There was a lot of resistance from radio to the word ‘cocaine.’ The record company wanted me to change it to champagne,’ but that was a whole different image, and I wouldn’t do it.”

The rock legend admitted that while his refusal to change the controversial lyric made it less radio-friendly, he stood by his decision because he didn’t want to change the meaning of his song.

In a 1993 interview, Petty recalled, “At the time, there was some controversy about the song.  It was suggested that we change the word ‘cocaine’ to ‘champagne.’  That bothered me because it didn’t mean the same thing at all. Cocaine is much more expensive than champagne, and it didn’t put it in the proper light for me. I thought since the song was putting the drug in a very negative context, there shouldn’t have been anything wrong with it, but I do think that some stations wouldn’t play it because of that.”

RELATED: 1981 Rock Duet Became the Biggest Hit Ever for Both Artists

Petty was no stranger to radio censorship. In 2002, his album The Last DJ was boycotted by some radio stations due to its lyrics about greed in the music industry. The rocker later told Rolling Stone he was “elated” when his song was banned.

“I mean, nothing could have complimented me more than to hear they just banned it as such-and-such a station because it’s anti-radio,” he said. “In 2002, to have a song banned that doesn’t have a dirty word, doesn’t advocate violence—it’s fascinating, you know. Like, what are you afraid of?”

“When I was a young rock ‘n’ roll star, I was really fascinated and shocked at times by the power that I had. By the power of my words,”  Petty continued. “[I was] shocked that it can be taken wrong. I don’t believe in censorship. But I do believe that an artist has to take some moral responsibility for what he or she is putting out there.”

Best-Selling 'Goddess of Pop' and Legendary Icon with Six-Decade Career Turns 80

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 4:15am

Cultural phenomenon and one of the best-selling artists in music history, Cher, turned 80 years old on May 20th, 2026. The only solo artist to have number one hits in seven decades, Cher has been awarded two Grammys, an Emmy, three Golden Globes, the Billboard Icon Award, and an Academy Award. She is the only performer to have an Oscar for acting, and be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

View the original article to see embedded media.

Born Cheryl Sarkisian, Cher was raised by a poor mother, Georgia Holt, in El Centro, California. Her father, an Armenian-American, struggled with drug and gambling addictions and was not in her life after her parents divorced when she was 10 months old. Cher's mother remarried several times, frequently moving them across different states.

Cher grew up idolizing actresses and performers like Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn. She dreamed of fame and later said of her ambition growing up, "I couldn't think of anything that I could do. I just thought, 'I'll be famous'. That was my goal."

Cher dropped out of school at 16 and moved out, dancing in nightclubs on Hollywood's Sunset Strip to support herself while she took acting classes and networked with managers, other performers, and agents. In November of 1962, she met Sonny Bono and agreed to work as his housekeeper. Bono introduced her to producer Phil Spector, who began using her as a backing vocalist and eventually produced her first single under the pseudonym "Bonnie Jo Mason."

Sonny Bono and Cher became very close friends and eventually fell in love, marrying in Tijuana in October of 1964. While Bono encouraged her to pursue a solo career, Cher's nerves and stage fright made it difficult for her and she preferred to perform alongside Bono.

Sonny and Cher rose to fame in the mid-1960s, becoming one of the decade's most recognizable acts. Singles like "Baby Don't Go", "I Got You Babe", "But You're Mine", and "The Beat Goes On" made them a household name in the folk-rock and pop scenes. In the 1970s, the pair moved into television, with the variety programs The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour  and The Sonny & Cher Show, making them utter household names. The couple had one child together, Chaz Bono, in 1969.

Sonny and Cher had a highly publicized divorce in 1975, where Cher sought full custody of Chaz and also to break free of an incredibly exploitative contract Bono held over her. She began her own solo show the same year. Unlike Bono's solo show, which ended after just 13 weeks, critics adored Cher's stating, "Sonny without Cher was a disaster. Cher without Sonny could be the best thing that's happened to weekly television this season."

In 1979 Cher adopted her singular name as a monolith, the name she's most known for legally, and pivoted her solo singing career to capitalize on the disco craze of the era. Her album and single of the same name, Take Me Home, were both massively successful, being bestsellers for over half of 1979 and being certified gold by the RIAA.

Facing struggling album sales in the '80s, Cher shifted towards acting, desperate to prove herself in an area where she felt she previously had not been taken seriously. After several roles here and there and some stints on Broadway, finally in 1987, she was cast in Norman Jewison's romantic comedyMoonstruck opposite Nicolas Cage. This role would land her an Academy Award, and help solidify her as a bankable actress.

With multiple decades of a career, essentially every Lifetime Achievement one could aim for, and being known as an icon across several mediums, it's safe to say the name Cher is one anyone can recognize. It's what she always wanted, and it's what she absolutely deserves.

This Popular Cruise Line Just Added Free Poolside Barbecue and Fried Chicken Venues to a Fan-Favorite Ship

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 4:10am

If you’ve spent any time planning a family cruise vacation recently, you already know that while your baseline ticket covers your cabin and main dining room meals, the "hidden fees" can add up incredibly fast. One of the biggest pain points for modern cruisers is casual, poolside dining. On many mainstream fleets, if you want a premium burger, a basket of wings or street tacos while lounging under the Caribbean sun, you're forced to pay an extra a la carte premium—or dry off entirely to trudge through a crowded indoor buffet line.

But a fresh upgrade from MSC Cruises just solved that exact poolside dilemma for travelers sailing out of Florida.

Following a brief statutory dry dock at the Grand Bahama Shipyard, MSC Seashore has officially returned to its year-round homeport of Port Canaveral. While dry docks are usually reserved for behind-the-scenes mechanical maintenance and routine cosmetic refreshes, MSC used the session to quietly drop a massive value upgrade for passengers: two brand-new, entirely complimentary grab-and-go dining concepts.

By embedding high-quality, walk-up comfort food directly into the ship's most popular outdoor zones at no extra charge, the line is delivering a serious injection of value and convenience for families trying to maximize their deck time.

How To Book The First Cruises To Sandy Cay, MSC's Newest Luxury Escape

"The introduction of these new grab-and-go options aboard MSC Seashore further reflects our commitment to continuously enhancing the guest experience," said Bernhard Stacher, Senior Vice President Shipboard Hospitality Operations at MSC Cruises, in a statement. "Our guests consistently tell us they value having a wide choice of dining available, so we are focused on delivering greater convenience and flexibility, making it easier than ever to experience carefully designed and meticulously crafted local favorites while making the most of the ship’s pools and the Caribbean’s endless sun.

The first new addition is The Chicken Man, located on the main pool deck on Deck 18. Complete with its own dedicated, themed, and shaded seating area, this fast-casual spot offers instant walk-up service for anyone craving comfort food between swims. The menu focuses entirely on crispy chicken tenders and a variety of freshly prepped chicken sandwiches, paired with a massive lineup of signature dipping sauces.

The second, and perhaps most unexpected, venue is Red Cactus BBQ & Ribs, located right next to MSC Seashore’s famous, glass-walled aft infinity pool on Deck 8. Boasting its own shaded open-air dining area and dual service lines to keep queues moving fast, this Texas-inspired spot is open for both breakfast and lunch.

The breakfast menu is an absolute game-changer for early risers who want to skip the standard buffet, offering hearty options like loaded barbecue burritos, savory pulled pork hash, country grits, fresh biscuits and eggs. At lunchtime, the menu transitions into a full smoked spread featuring slow-cooked pulled pork, beef brisket, barbecue chicken, pork ribs, and sausage. Cruisers can round out their plates with classic Southern sides like burnt-end macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and buttermilk coleslaw, followed by classic banana pudding or a cookie pecan butter pie for dessert.

Related: MSC Reveals Plans for Second Private Island as Part of Massive Caribbean Expansion

These two free concepts roll out right alongside MSC Seashore's newly minted "Dine on Your Time" program, which gives guests in the main dining rooms greater flexibility to choose their dinner hours on the fly.

For travelers looking to plan a quick tropical escape, the newly refreshed ship is executing a highly flexible schedule of 3-, 4- and 7-night summer itineraries through the Western Caribbean and The Bahamas. Every single sailing features a dedicated stop at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve—the cruise line's stunning private island paradise—with select 4-night getaways featuring a rare overnight stay on the island. The longer 7-night Western Caribbean routes expand the itinerary to call at Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, alongside Nassau.

When you aren't lounging by the infinity pool with a plate of ribs, the ship functions as a massive entertainment and culinary resort, boasting five additional specialty restaurants (including the signature Butcher’s Cut steakhouse and Hola! Tacos and Cantina), 18 bars and lounges, and an expansive 7,534-square-foot dedicated kids zone.

If you want to map out a summer Caribbean getaway where you can enjoy premium poolside comfort food without constantly swiping your cruise card, MSC Seashore's zero-zipper food upgrades are officially open for business.

Walmart's 'Comfortable' $70 Corduroy Folding Sofa Is a Hosting Game-Changer, and It Comes in 4 Colors

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 4:01am

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

When furniture lovers look back on 2026, they may remember it as the year of the boneless couch. The trend has been taking off in a big way, as shoppers embrace the soft, unstructured loungers that basically blur the line between sofas and jumbo pillows. The Neche Corduroy Folding Sofa Bed offers a similar vibe in a more compact form.

That might be just the thing if you're looking to add extra seating to your home, but lack space for an actual sofa. This hybrid checks all of the boxes, combining classic style with unmatched support. Normally $160 at Walmart, the black version is now on sale for just $70. You can also score a white version for $80 and navy and gray versions for $90.

Shop at Walmart

The beauty of the boneless design is that it's very much a set-it-and-forget-it situation. The product arrives tightly sealed in a single box. Simply break the seal to release the couch, which begins to expand in seconds. Give it a good pat and wait about 48 hours for it to reach its full form. There's absolutely no assembly required, a key reason people have gravitated to the trend.

The sofa also happens to be incredibly plush and supportive. It's the ultimate comfort ecosystem, with a headrest and lumbar pillow included for cushioning that feels great whether you're kicking back with a book or lying down for a nap. Both pieces conform to your natural shape, creating an almost personalized feel when you sit or recline.

Boneless structures maintain a sense of stability despite their lack of framework. This Walmart option is a great example, with thick shredded foam creating a firm and substantial base on which to relax. The material is covered with rich corduroy, known for its distinctive ribbed appearance. "This sofa bed is amazing," one shopper wrote. "It's incredibly comfortable and soft!"

"I really like this chair," another person said. "I wanted something I could easily move from room to room for my kiddo or dog and it's perfect. It's slightly heavy, but well worth it given how comfy it is since it's made of foam."

You can't put a price on your comfort, but you definitely don't have to spend a fortune on it either. Pick up the Neche Folding Sofa Bed for as little as $70 (that's a savings of $90!) at Walmart. Don't miss it while it's available in your preferred color!

The watch comes in two vibrant colorways: silver and gold. Both have a luxe aesthetic that makes them look far more expensive than they actually are. The watch is built around a 30-millimeter, sleek stainless steel case paired with a polished 16-millimeter stainless steel bracelet designed to fit wrists up to 8.25 inches. Its standout detail is easily the mother-of-pearl dial, which reflects light differently throughout the day.

But the sparkly crystal-lined bezel is a close second, and gives the watch a touch of sparkle. The watch runs on a Thailand-made quartz movement complete with a date function, and it has a scratch-resistant face. One shopper, who gave it a five-star review after purchasing it as a gift, wrote, “Beautiful piece. My sister was satisfied.”

Although it has a bold face, the watch’s slim 30-millimeter case makes it versatile enough to wear every day, whether it's to the office, brunch, or date nights. At 11 millimeters thick, it’s also lightweight enough not to feel heavy on the wrist. The stainless steel construction also adds durability, as does its impressive 100 ATM water resistance. 1999 Sentimental Hit, Called the 'Most Iconic Farewell Anthem,' Resurfaces Every Year Despite Never Reaching No. 1

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 3:26am

It's the farewell anthem that fans will never actually say goodbye to: Vitamin C's nostalgic track "Graduation (Friends Forever)."

The beloved sentimental pop song was released as part of Vitamin C's self-titled debut album in 1999, and over 25 years later, it still remains a go-to graduation staple that fans continuously bring back every year.

But despite its continued success over the years, "Graduation (Friends Forever)" never hit No. 1 on the charts. After it was released as a single in 2000, the song peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 38, spending a total of twelve weeks at various spots on the chart.

The song also hit the Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart (now known as the Pop Airplay chart), where it peaked at No. 12 in June 2000. According to Spotify, "Graduation (Friends Forever)" has been streamed more than 43 million times, making it by far the most popular song from Vitamin C's entire music catalog.

The fan-favorite graduation song has been referred to as the "most iconic farewell anthem ever," as noted in a 2020 press release from Vizzy Hard Seltzer, which released a light-hearted parody of the Vitamin C track to bid farewell to the tumultuous year that was 2020.

"Graduation (Friends Forever)" is also consistently included on roundup lists of the best graduation songs, including a ranking from Teen Vogue, which placed the Vitamin C classic as the No. 16 song on its list of the Best Graduation Songs for the Ultimate Graduation Playlist.

Parade even named it the "best graduation song of all time" in a May 2026 ranking, along with other ceremony staples like "Good Riddance (Time of Our Lives)" by Green Day, "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons and more.

Quote of the Day: Painter Vincent van Gogh on Passion and Not Letting ‘The Fire Go Out in One’s Soul’—‘Keep It Burning'

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 2:45am

Vincent van Gogh was one of the most famous painters to ever exist. Not only are his paintings unique, as he painted in a Post-Impressionist style, but his story is tragic and interesting.

As Britannica reported, van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the Netherlands and didn’t start painting until he was 27 years old. Even though he started when he was older and only lived for another decade after he began, he created 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings in that time. Even if you don’t realize it, you’ve definitely seen a van Gogh painting before; he’s known for “Sunflowers,” “Bedroom in Arles” and “Wheatfield with Crows,” with maybe his most famous painting being “The Starry Night.” If you know van Gogh’s story and if you see the beauty and vibrancy of his paintings, you know that he was passionate about his work. And that’s the inspiration behind our quote of the day.

He came from an upper-middle-class family and worked as an art dealer when he was a young adult. According to Britannica, he worked for a branch of art dealers in London from 1873 to 1875, then in Paris until 1876. However, art dealing depressed him, and he went on to become a teacher and “lay preacher” in England in 1877, even getting more into theology and entering a ministry. However, he was radicalized after doing missionary work in poor mining communities in Belgium; he gave away all his possessions and was let go from the ministry because he had a “too literal interpretation of Christian teaching.”

This then led him to start drawing by 1880, which led to painting. As mentioned earlier, he’s considered a Post-Impressionist artist, a movement that came in the late 1880s, after the “naturalism” of Impressionism, per the Met Museum. It broke free of those natural brush strokes that still featured realistic elements. Post-Impressionists used bold colors, abstract shapes and other techniques to create “natural” scenes or pictures through an abstract lens.

Van Gogh studied art and met with other artists of the time. His passion took him far and led him to paint those hundreds of artworks we mentioned before. However, in the years before the end of his life, van Gogh became more depressed, very mentally ill and was poor. He spent time in different psychiatric hospitals and had psychotic episodes, per the Van Gogh Museum. He died on July 29, 1890, two days after a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite the tragic last few years of his life, he left the world with his amazing art, which includes his paintings, drawings and even letters he wrote to his brother. And thanks to those letters, we know a lot more about his thoughts and feelings, along with how much he really was struggling near the end. But today’s quote gives us a glimpse into what van Gogh thought of keeping passion alive in your soul, which he displayed often through his work.

Quote of the Day by Vincent van Gogh

“One must never let the fire go out in one's soul, but keep it burning.”

This quote appears in the book Letters of Vincent van Gogh, edited by Mark Roskill, which is a collection of letters written by the late painter in chronological order. All of them are to his brother and art dealer, Theo, who was also van Gogh’s “closest confidant,” the book’s description reads.

As the Van Gogh Museum reported, the painter wrote more than 2,000 letters in his life, with almost half surviving the tests of time.

In the chapter titled “Early Years,” van Gogh wrote this line in a letter to his brother around the late 1870s. In the paragraphs before, he is telling Theo about how good it is “to love many things” because there’s strength in that: “whoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done…” He then tells his brother that it’s better to say and do things with significance, even if it’s in smaller quantities, than to do many things. Van Gogh then points out that loving what you do is essential to living well and being independent, and having a job you’re good at is overall important.

Then, he states that life is short and goes by really quickly, so you should master one thing you really love. And it’s okay if someone is more introverted or wants to choose poverty and loves it. They'll "go safest through the world and among people” and "possess a great treasure, and will always clearly hear the voice of his conscience…”

Deeper Meaning of Vincent van Gogh’s Quote—‘Never Let the Fire Go Out in One’s Soul'

van Gogh was passionate about making art. He didn’t get fame or fortune while he was alive (as is the case with many famous artists), but he kept painting despite seeing little monetary success. But that’s what makes what he did a passion profession; he was in it for the love of the game, not what he could get out of it.

Even though you can see glimpses of his depression in his work, his paintings didn't take on stale or dull colors or become dreary. His use of vibrant colors, even darker ones like the blues in “The Starry Night,” is what he’s known for, and where you can really see the fire burning in his soul.

He really did live out this quote, never letting his fire go out and keeping devotion for his art alive, no matter what his inner turmoil and mental health were doing to his mind.

And to translate this quote to people’s lives nowadays, it's saying that no matter what you choose to do with your life—if you love it and have passion, that’s what matters. And it’s important to keep that fervor alive in your heart. If you start living life without any fire in your soul or without any true driving force and purpose, then you’re living a dull life. We should all listen to van Gogh’s words to “keep it burning” and live with tenacity.
