More than four decades after reaching the top of the charts, Prince and the Revolution are making another impressive return.

The legendary band's landmark soundtrack album, Purple Rain, has climbed back onto the Billboard 200, landing at No. 166. The latest chart appearance comes 42 years after the album first reached No. 1 in 1984, proving that one of rock and pop music's most celebrated releases continues to connect with listeners across generations.

Originally released on June 25, 1984, through Warner Bros. Records, Purple Rain served as the soundtrack to Prince's hit film of the same name. The album became Prince's sixth studio album and the first to officially credit his backing band, The Revolution, as collaborators throughout the project.

The return to the Billboard 200 adds another chapter to the album's remarkable chart history. During its original run, Purple Rain spent 24 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 167 weeks. It also produced several major hit singles, including "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," "Purple Rain," and "I Would Die 4 U."

The album remains Prince's biggest commercial success, with worldwide sales estimated at 25 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Purple Rain marked a major turning point in Prince's career. Unlike many of his earlier releases, the album featured full-band performances from The Revolution, blending rock, pop, R&B, funk, electronic music, and psychedelic influences into a sound that became known around the world.

The album also helped introduce some of Prince's signature songs. The title track was originally written as a country song and was intended as a collaboration with Stevie Nicks. 

Beyond its commercial success, Purple Rain has remained one of the most honored albums in popular music.

The project earned Prince and the Revolution a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, while also receiving a nomination for Album of the Year.

The album has since been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Its influence has continued long after its original release. Following Prince's death in 2016, both the album and its title song returned to music charts around the world. More recently, Purple Rain climbed back to No. 1 on the Official Soundtrack Albums chart in the United Kingdom, extending another chapter in its decades-long chart success.

Even after spending more than 40 years in music history, Purple Rain continues to find new audiences. Its latest appearance on the Billboard 200 at No. 166 shows that the music Prince and the Revolution created in 1984 remains as powerful today as it was when it first reached No. 1.

In case you haven't noticed, it's pretty hot out there right now...especially if you happen to be in one of the many locations across the globe experiencing record-breaking heat waves. So what's the best way to cope with these sweltering summer days?

Whether you're braving the outdoors or staying inside, you'll need the perfect playlist to beat the heat...and it should probably include Van Halen's 1978 classic, "On Fire."

The last track on Van Halen's self-titled debut album, "On Fire" was ranked the #1 "Top Heat Wave Song" by Ultimate Classic Rock's Matthew Wilkening. As Wilkening put it, Eddie Van Halen "does his best to match the sun for energy output on this absolutely scorching guitar expedition from the band's 1978 debut. David Lee Roth's got his back and a fool-proof plan for heat wave enjoyment: 'Turn your radios on / I'll appear right there / Yes I will / Turn me up real loud / Now I'm hanging ten now baby...'"

What makes "On Fire" all the more impressive is knowing that Van Halen apparently made up his guitar solo on the spot.

According to Van Halen News Desk, when the band was recording "On Fire," the legendary guitarist didn't know what to play when it was time for his solo. As the story goes, everybody just shouted at him to "play like John McLaughlin" (the jazz fusion pioneer). Whether he was trying to play like McLaughlin or not, the resulting solo (played on Van Halen's Ibanez Destroyer “Shark") is undeniably Eddie.

While "On Fire" was never released as a single, the band used the song as a show-opener on their 1978 world tour and it remains a fan favorite to this day.

Interestingly enough, another of Van Halen's guitar solos was rumored to be so hot that it really did set a speaker on fire...but that's not exactly what happened.

As Music Radar reported, while a longstanding myth claimed Van Halen's solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It" started a blaze in the studio — a story backed up in by producer Quincy Jones in his memoir — recording engineer Matt Forger says it was more of a smoke show than an inferno.

“It was glowing red and it emitted a tremendous amount of smoke," Forger said, adding, "So, it's not like it's a giant flame, like a jet engine flame is going to come out. Instead, it's going to smolder like an ember and create a horrendous atrocious smell, that real acidic electronic burning smell. The thing was lighting up like a toaster."

The moral of the story? Van Halen is hot stuff. After all, the opening track on Van Halen — which Rolling Stone ranked at #292 on their list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" — is "Runnin' With the Devil." (No wonder the guys had to call in the "Ice Cream Man.")

Metallica, the legendary heavy metal band, once again proved that its legacy extends far beyond the concert stage.

Amid its massive M72 World Tour, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group remained in the spotlight after delivering a selfless act.

Following the devastating tragedy in Venezuela caused by back-to-back 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, the band donated $100,000.

Through Metallica’s non-profit and philanthropic organization, All Within My Hands (AWMH), the band teamed up with longtime partner Direct Relief to distribute funds supporting local search-and-rescue and emergency medical operations.

“Direct Relief is preparing medical aid commonly needed after earthquakes, including first-aid supplies, hygiene items for displaced families, medicines used to treat acute injuries, and chronic disease medications for people whose access to routine care may be interrupted. AWMH’s $100,000 grant will support Direct Relief as the organization continues to respond to requests in the region as they become known,” the caption reads.

The post captured the hearts of fans who were in awe of the band's act of generosity.

“@metallica I knew you were The Greatest, but this goes beyond that !! Thank you on behalf of Venezuelans,” a commenter said.

“The hero of the day. Gracias, Metallica, I hope you will return to Venezuela one day,” one wrote.

The comment section was filled with messages expressing gratitude for the band's continued support for the community.

“Dear Metallica, there are no words that can truly express how grateful I am. Thank you for being more than just the greatest rock band in the world. Thank you not only for the unforgettable music and the inspiration your songs have given to millions of people, but also for showing the world the kindness and compassion that define who you are.”

“¡Muchas gracias! The best band on the planet. Thank you so much!” a follower added.

The same was true for another fan who wrote, “Gracias Metallica for helping Venezuela. We love you!”

This was not the first time the band had extended help to a community in need.

In March, Metallica's All Within My Hands Foundation (AWMH) teamed up with Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa to donate $125,000 following the catastrophic flooding that hit the island.

Guitarist Kirk Hammett also performed at a benefit concert with Momoa in support of Hawaii's “Aloha in Action” in April.

The news regarding the band’s All Within My Hands initiative marked its latest philanthropic endeavor while the band wrapped up its U.K. summer leg with its final show on July 5 at London Stadium.

After this, Metallica will kick off its Las Vegas Sphere residency this fall, running from Oct. 1 to Nov. 7 at Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jen Terry was dumped from Love Island USA Season 8 last night, and on tonight’s Love Island USA Aftersun, she broke her silence and shared her unfiltered thoughts on her dumping and the reaction.

During Love Island USA Aftersun, viewers were shown what happened moments after she was dumped from the villa. Jen was taken by producers into a house and allowed to decompress.

The Islander made it clear that she left with no regrets; everything she needed to get off her chest she shared in the villa.

Immediately, she was asked what was going on in her head following the dumping. She explained that going into the recoupling, “I knew I was going home.”

She shared that she had no ill will towards any of the remaining Islanders. “I like them as people,” but she acknowledged that there wasn’t any romantic connection remaining between anyone in the Villa.

Regarding Gal Tshnieder, Jen was pretty straightforward. “I do feel a little like I'm used.” She added, “I wasn't really surprised that he wasn't going to pick me, but I was just more frustrated with the fact that I brought him in and then he had the power to give me the boot.”

Later in the episode, Jen was questioned by Love Island USA Aftersun host Ciara Miller and Tefi Pessoa about why she decided to couple up with Gal in the first place. “Because I had a crush on him,” she explained before clarifying, “a crush is just a lack of information.”

Explaining who was the one to end the pairing, Jen revealed that during the “compromise” conversation, she had actually intended to end the pairing there, but she was convinced to meet in the middle and compromise to try and make it work, only for it to fall apart 24 hours later.

While waiting for the next dumped Islander to arrive, Jen shared that she was very curious about who would be joining her after the dumping. “I don't think Corbin [Mims] and Parmida [Keshani] are gonna make it,” elaborating that she believes that the pair are into each other on a superficial level and simply enjoy one another’s looks, pointing to Corbin’s recoupling speech as an example.

As for who else she expected to be dumped from the villa quickly? Jen added, “I'm sure Gal and Amora [Robinson] won't make it either,” taking a shot at her recent partner.

As far as her friendship with Kenzie Annis? Jen revealed that everything is good. “We're already making plans, and I told her, like this is Love Island.”

With that said, Jen established ground rules. “If you’re trying to kiss my man, I'm not going to be your friend.”

As for what’s next for Jen? She shared, “Honestly, I came in here saying like I was ready to find love because I always prioritize work and myself, and when I get out of here that's the same thing I wanna do 10 times harder.”  With that said, she is ready to focus on her work and career and knows that love will find her when the time is right.

Some of rock's most influential musicians built their legacies in the spotlight. Harvey Brooks built his by making everyone around him sound better.

The acclaimed bassist turns 82 today after a remarkable career that has taken him from the groundbreaking sessions for Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited to collaborations with the Doors, Miles Davis and countless other legendary artists. Along the way, he also helped found two celebrated supergroups: the pioneering blues-rock band Electric Flag and, decades later, the New York Rock and Soul Revue.

Brooks emerged as one of New York's most in-demand session musicians during the 1960s.

A versatile bassist equally comfortable with rock, blues, jazz and soul, he quickly earned a reputation for bringing creativity and musicality to every recording session. That reputation led him to play on Dylan's landmark 1965 album Highway 61 Revisited, including the iconic "Like a Rolling Stone," one of the most celebrated songs in rock history.

"For Dylan, it was not enough to be a skilled studio musician," Brooks told Best Classic Bands. "He wanted musicians who could adapt quickly to his style. In talking to Bob, I admitted that I hadn’t heard any of his music before the session, but was really impressed by 'Like a Rolling Stone,' which I first heard when I walked into the studio."

Brooks' résumé continued to grow throughout the rest of the 1960s and into the decade to follow.

Brooks became a founding member of Electric Flag alongside guitarist Mike Bloomfield, singer Nick Gravenites, keyboardist Barry Goldberg and drummer Buddy Miles. The group's ambitious fusion of blues, rock, soul and jazz made it one of the era's most innovative supergroups, even though its original run was relatively brief.

His collaborative spirit also led him to work with the Doors during the recording of The Soft Parade, contributing bass to several tracks as the band expanded its musical palette. Over the years, Brooks also recorded or performed with artists including Richie Havens, John Sebastian, John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton, B.B. King and Miles Davis, whose landmark album B-----s Brew helped redefine jazz fusion.

"I play music for my own enjoyment and to share what I feel with other musicians and listeners," Brooks told Blues GR. "I sum up the music I'm playing into its simplest form and then expand rhythmically and harmonically on that form. When I'm in a band format, I'm listening to the other players and musically conversing, remembering that as a bass player my role is to I doing hold the bottom rhythmically and harmonically. In other words keep the groove solid."

In the early 1990s, Brooks once again found himself at the center of an all-star lineup when he became a founding member of the New York Rock and Soul Revue. The rotating collective featured an impressive cast of musicians, including Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Phoebe Snow and Eddie Brigati, celebrating classic rhythm and blues through acclaimed live performances.

Although he never sought the spotlight, Brooks' influence can be heard across some of popular music's most important recordings. His tasteful playing, adaptability and willingness to cross musical boundaries made him one of the most respected bassists of his generation.

As Harvey Brooks celebrates his 82nd birthday, his extraordinary body of work continues to remind listeners that some of rock's greatest contributions come from the musicians whose names may not always appear on the marquee, but whose artistry helped define an era.

One indie rock band active throughout the 1990s is joining the ongoing trend of rock group revivals and releasing their first new album in 28 years. The Scottish band the Yummy Fur, which was formed in 1992 and stayed together until their disbandment in 1999, is coming back in a major way with a new EP.

The band hasn't released new music in any form since 1998, but the Yummy Fur just revealed the exciting news of their upcoming album called Everybody Talks About The Weather. The new EP will be released on Sept. 25 through Upset The Rhythm.

Everybody Talks About The Weather was recorded by original band members John McKeown, Paul Thomson, and Brian MacDougall, and the album will be released through Upset The Rhythm.

The first single off the album, "Unity Over Europe," is already out. The record will have a tracklist of 10 songs, with others like "King Of Nothing," "Blue Sunshine," and the title track, as reported by Stereogum.

"'Unity Over Europe' was the first song we came up with when we started thinking about putting some new songs into the set to escape the end-of-the-pier vibe of just performing the hits," the band said in a statement about the first track. "It's conceived as a two-act play with three main characters: Diana, Unity and Nancy, the Mitford Sisters."

The band explained, "Act One finds them trapped in a flat two-dimensional Francis Bacon triptych spinning in space-time much like the excellent villains in Superman 2. In the second act Unity is placed in the nose cone of the V2 rocket and fired from Peenemünde into London, a punishment in homage to the final death parabola of Pynchon's Rainbow."

Along with the new album, the Yummy Fur also announced a U.K. tour. It will consist of seven shows in cities that include London, Oxford, Exeter, Bristol, Brighton, Norwich, and Manchester.

The last album the Yummy Fur released was 1998's Sexy World, the follow-up to their debut album Night Club, which came out in 1996. They also have a couple of compilation albums and the EP Male Shadow at Three O'Clock, the last of which also came out in 1998.

After the group disbanded, the members went on to work on several interesting projects. Most notably, former Yummy Fur members Alex Kapranos and Thomson went on to found the popular band Franz Ferdinand, while McKeown is part of the band 1990s.

Target shoppers may not notice the company's latest update at first, but it could help make Drive Up orders arrive a little faster.

The retailer has rolled out a new technology upgrade designed to streamline one of the most common delays its Drive Up team members face, which will end up speeding up the order fulfillment process behind the scenes.

According to Business Insider, employees previously had to unlock secured Drive Up doors with a key fob or assistance from another coworker every time they returned to the store after delivering an order. "We've all stood at home digging for our keys. Now imagine you know you've got a cart in front of you," Ashley Daniels, Target's head of product management for internal software, told the outlet on Friday, July 3. "We saw this was a frequent, very real pain point for our stores."

Target's solution was simple. The company added a feature to employees' handheld devices that allows them to unlock the doors with a tap while connected to the store's secure Wi-Fi network—no fumbling for keys required.

While saving roughly 30 seconds per trip may not sound like much, the impact quickly adds up. Target estimates the update will save more than 350,000 labor hours annually across its nearly 2,000 U.S. stores.

Earlier this year, Target announced plans to invest approximately $5 billion into its business, including remodeling more than 130 stores and opening 30 new locations.

Many remodeled stores will feature expanded grocery departments, refreshed displays, upgraded checkout areas and larger spaces dedicated to Drive Up, Order Pickup, and Returns. Guests can also expect brighter layouts, updated signage, renovated restrooms and, in some locations, more energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration systems.

All these behind-the-scenes improvements could mean getting back on the road just a little bit faster on your next Target run.

The surprises kept coming at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding reception—and two music legends topped the list.

According to People, music legends Paul McCartneyand Stevie Nicks both performed during the couple's lavish wedding reception at New York City's Madison Square Garden on Friday, July 3.

McCartney, 84, reportedly treated guests to The Beatles' chart-topping classic "I Want to Hold Your Hand.” The surprise performances reportedly began after Swift's mother, Andrea Swift, welcomed guests into the reception space.

"After the ceremony, Taylor’s mom Andrea invited everyone into the reception room where the stage was set up," a source told the outlet on Saturday, July 4, adding that Nicks, 78, (who has shared a close friendship and mentorship with the pop star for years) also took the stage.

The musical lineup was just one of several personal touches throughout the celebration. Rather than following tradition, Swift reportedly asked her younger brother, Austin Swift, to serve as her "man of honor," while Kelce's older brother, Jason Kelce, stood beside him as best man. According to Page Six, actor Adam Sandleralso officiated the ceremony.

Outside, Madison Square Garden made the marriage official in its own unforgettable way. Around 7:30 p.m. ET, the venue's digital signage lit up with the message, "JUST&T MARRIED!," confirming the couple had officially tied the knot as guests celebrated inside.

While the couple has kept most details of the celebration tightly under wraps, a social media post from country star Maren Morris offered fans another small glimpse inside the festivities. Morris shared photos from the wedding on Instagram, including an elegant lace handkerchief embroidered with the lyrics "so it's gonna be forever" from Swift's hit "Blank Space," along with the date, "New York City," and a decorative "T" surrounded by two hearts. She captioned the post, "baby just say yes," a nod to Swift's song "Love Story."

Few rock songs sound more explosive than Styx's "Renegade."

With its dramatic a cappella opening, thunderous guitars and unforgettable chorus, the 1978 classic has become one of the band's signature songs and a staple of classic rock radio. Today, it's also a familiar soundtrack for Fourth of July celebrations, but the song began in a far more unexpected way, as a soft piano ballad.

The inspiration struck while Tommy Shaw was experimenting at the keyboard.

Although best known as a guitarist, Shaw revealed that "Renegade" was originally written on piano after he became fascinated with a chord progression from Tales of Mystery and Imagination by The Alan Parsons Project.

"I'm a guitar-playing piano player," Shaw told Guitar Player. "I had a piano, so I figured out the notes, the triad… I started moving them around like chess pieces, 'cause that's what you do when you're a songwriter."

It wasn't long before he'd written the whole song, including the lyrics.

"I wrote the words quickly and then recorded it like that," Shaw told Ultimate Classic Rock. "I listened back to it and it was like, 'I think this is good!' I played it for the band and then they started coming up with the arrangements of it."

When Shaw brought the idea to the rest of Styx during sessions for their 1978 album Pieces of Eight, keyboardist Dennis DeYoung took over the piano part before the band transformed the song into the hard-driving rocker fans know today.

"We transposed it and it turned out to be an easy thing to play on guitar," Shaw recalled. "From that point on we just started carving on it as a song. [...] And within minutes it became the song that you know."

Released as the third single from Pieces of Eight in 1979, "Renegade" became one of Styx's biggest hits, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its story of a wanted outlaw, combined with soaring harmonies and arena-ready guitar riffs, helped make it one of the defining rock songs of the era.

Over the decades, the song has taken on a life far beyond the charts. It has become synonymous with sporting events, most famously as the rallying cry for the Pittsburgh Steelers, while its unmistakable opening has kept it in heavy rotation on classic rock radio. Around the Fourth of July, its all-American energy and stadium-sized sound have also made it a favorite for fireworks shows, backyard barbecues and Independence Day playlists.

Nearly 50 years after its release, "Renegade" remains one of Styx's defining achievements. What began as a piano composition inspired by another classic album evolved into one of rock's most enduring anthems, proving that some of the biggest songs can grow from the simplest musical ideas.

Right now, one of the most recognizable pieces of music in sports is echoing through FIFA World Cup stadiums across North America. And even though millions of fans know it by its first notes, few can actually name the rock legends who created it.

“It has never ceased to amaze me how much use that one tune gets,” the co-writer once said, via Classic Rock. “We get requests for commercials, movies, and it’s become a sports anthem. It’s just incredible.”

That unforgettable prog anthem is “Sirius,” a two-minute piece of instrumental genius. And the maker of that anthem is The Alan Parsons Project, the studio collaboration between pianist Eric Woolfson and legendary English audio engineer and producer Alan Parsons, who previously worked with The Beatles on Abbey Road and Pink Floyd on The Dark Side of the Moon.

Designated the official pitch-taking music for the players competing in the global fútbol tournament, “Sirius” is getting a ton of play lately. But its popularity is nothing new.

The song has a long history in sports, beginning in 1984 when the Chicago Bulls used the it as a pregame hype track, then to soundtrack introductions of the starting lineup, helping turn it into one of the most recognizable pieces of music in athletics.

“It’s a bit of a frustration that people hear the music and say that’s the Bulls theme,” Parsons told ESPN, via Classic Rock. “I wish they did know it was The Alan Parsons Project. But they don't.”

While recording Eye in the Sky, Parsons and Woolfson composed the piece using a Fairlight CMI digital synthesizer and workstation. A cinematic, tension-building prog-rock cut, it features an iconic, echoing keyboard loop that bleeds into a soaring electric guitar solo.

According to Classic Rock, the band was keeping with its tradition of kicking off albums with an instrumental introduction, and this one was designed specifically to segue into the title track.

They could never have known the song would become what Far Outcalls an “eternal sporting anthem.” But here we are. Professional wrestler Ricky Steamboat used the track as his entrance theme, the Nebraska Cornhuskers rock it during their tunnel walk, and every athlete at the FIFA World Cup revels in it before every game.

“Sirius” was named after the brightest star in the Canis Major constellation—a fitting title for a song that, more than four decades later, still shines over the biggest names in sports.

Fans are ecstatic after country star Charley Crockett revealed that his acclaimed 2026 album Clovis is finally back on streaming platforms after it vanished from them earlier this year.

The country singer shared the big news on Instagram on July 3rd, writing, "You told ‘em to Free Clovis and they did. Just when you think it’s over, that’s when it begins…"

Fans were ecstatic about the news, with comments like, "What’s better than releasing the best album of all time… releasing it twice?" and "Clovis is so good they had to drop it twice."

A third declared in a top-liked comment, "This is one of the greatest country albums ever. That includes any artist. Ever. This is one of the best."

Other earnest responses included, "It’s a phenomenal album. Absolutely stunning piece of art," and "I’m crying real tears over this, I wish I was joking but I missed this album so much."

Clovis was originally released on April 28 on Spotify and May 1 on all platforms. The album was immediately a hit, with one review on SavingCountryMusic.com saying, "His surprise album Clovis isn’t just a career-defining record. It’s an act of rebellion." The review referenced how Crockett released the album on his own after completing his contract with Island Records.

Another positive review from Sputnikmusic heavily praised the record, saying, "I think that this is the strongest, most mature and most authentic album that Crockett has penned, and that’s saying something considering there’s not a bad album in his ever-growing discography."

Unfortunately, only days after its release, Clovis was pulled from streaming platforms on May 5 due to a conflict with Crockett's now-former record company, Island Records. Now, about two months later, it has finally returned as an official release through the label Atlantic Outpost.

In a statement from Crockett shared alongside the announcement of the re-release, he said, via Stereogum, "Happy 4th of July week y’all. Sometimes you need to fight. Goliath vs Goliath. On this 250th birthday for America, I’m reminded that freedom is something you continue to fight for. A war that never ends. Today, we win one battle. Clovis is out 4th of July weekend on Atlantic Outpost. Let’s ride."

Kelly Osbourne is honoring her family with words that will move you to tears.

On July 4th, the 41-year-old took to Instagram to pen a deeply personal open letter to her mom, Sharon Osbourne, on what would have been Sharon's 46th wedding anniversary with rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away on July 22, 2025 at the age of 76.

"Today feels different," Kelly wrote. "A day that was once filled with celebration now carries a quiet ache. This is your first wedding anniversary without Daddy by your side, and I can only imagine how heavy your heart must feel. There are some dates that remind us just how deeply we have loved, and today is one of them."

Sharon and Ozzy, who married in 1980, shared one of rock and roll's most iconic love stories and business partnerships - a bond that Kelly made clear didn't end with his passing. "I hope you know that love like yours doesn't end when a life does," she wrote. "It changes shape. It becomes the warmth of the sun on your face when you need comfort, the memories that make you smile through tears, the quiet moments when you somehow know he's near. Daddy may no longer walk beside you, but he will never stop walking with you."

Kelly also shared that she imagines Ozzy looking down on Sharon from heaven "with that magical smile - the one that held so much pride and so much love," adding that he would want Sharon to see herself as he always did: "resilient, compassionate, courageous, and endlessly loving."

The heartfelt letter concluded with a promise from Kelly (and the entire Osbourne family) to support Sharon through every milestone ahead. "We will hold your hand when the days are too heavy," Kelly wrote, "celebrate your victories, sit with you in your sadness and remind you whenever you need reminding that love is still all around you."

Kelly, who shares 3-year-old son Sidney with ex Sid Wilson, ended her tribute on a tender note: "Sidney and I love you more than words could ever hold." We’re sure Ozzy would smile and say 'Mama, I’m coming home'.

TV icon William Shatner'sother creative outlet is music. The Star Trek star is releasing a metal album called A Gathering of Forces, and he revealed his inspirations. There is one song that is titled with a direct reference to a Guns N' Roses song.

The hard rock band released "Patience" in 1989 with the album G N' R Lies. The song opens with beautiful guitar and whistling. The lyrics talk about missing a woman and needing patience to see her again.

"Said 'woman take it slow and things will be just fine/You and I'll just use a little patience'/Said 'sugar take the time 'cause the lights are shining bright/You and I got what it takes to make it.'"

The hopeful song sparked inspiration for Shatner and co-writers. "There’s a popular [Guns N’ Roses] song called 'Patience,'" the actor told TV Insider. "So we wrote a song called 'Impatience.'" He learned something new about what's possible with the metal genre.

"And it’s like, 'I’m not waiting around for anybody! I’m not waiting around!'" he continued. "[I found out] that heavy metal does have guitar solos in it. I didn’t know! I thought heavy metal was 'Bing, bang, crash, boom.' And it isn’t only that; so I’m learning."

The Emmy winner started his recording career in 1968 and covered The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and Queen. He teased his new work in February with Cleopatra.

"I’ve spent a lifetime exploring in both reality and fiction," Shatner said. "Now I am stepping out into the unknown once again with my new project in heavy metal. I am covering Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden as well as a number of new songs written by my team. The whole project is destined for this year. I hope you will join me in the exploration."

Shatner previously revealed the singer who inspires him most. "Freddie had such a superb voice," he told The Guardian. "If you’re asking me who is my favourite singer I’d say Freddie Mercury. Who is my favourite band? Queen. Favourite song? 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'"

"Impatience" isn't the first time the Boston Legal actor wrote a song. He said in the same interview that he wrote something for his funeral.

"I would play a song we wrote called 'I Want to Be a Tree,'" he said. "I had read an article about planting a tree on your body when you die and I thought, 'That’s the way I want to go.' So I’ve made arrangements that I will be cremated, my ashes buried in the ground, and a tree planted on top."

The Canadian actor already has the kind of tree picked out. "I originally wanted a sequoia placed over my body but they said it wouldn’t grow, so I’m going to be a giant redwood," he said.

The release date of A Gathering of Forces and further details haven't been revealed.
