“Hanky Panky” is one of rock’s greatest comeback stories.

What began as an overlooked regional single eventually became a No. 1 smash in 1966, launching 18 year-old singer Tommy James and the Shondells into the national spotlight.

The song’s success almost never happened.

Written by legendary songwriting duo Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, “Hanky Panky” was first recorded by Tommy James and his local Michigan band in 1964. The single attracted little attention, and the group eventually disbanded. But nearly two years later, a Pittsburgh disc jockey began playing the forgotten record, generating overwhelming listener demand that spread rapidly throughout western Pennsylvania.

That unexpected buzz changed everything, especially on the label side.

“When ‘Hanky Panky’ exploded out of Pittsburgh, and I came to New York, right out of the Midwest, we got a yes from everybody,” James later told Best Classic Bands. “We got a yes from Columbia, Epic, RCA, Atlantic and the last place we took the record to was Roulette. So, I’m feeling really good thinking we’re probably going to be with CBS or Atlantic. The next morning, we started getting calls from all the labels that had said yes the day before suddenly saying, ‘Tom, we gotta pass,’ and I said ‘Whadya mean? I thought we had a deal,’ and finally Jerry Wexler at Atlantic told me the truth, that Morris Levy from Roulette had called up all the other labels and scared ’em. Basically, threatened them [by saying] ‘This is my f**king record.'”

James quickly reunited a band under the Shondells name and signed with Roulette Records, which reissued “Hanky Panky” nationally in 1966.

The move paid off almost immediately.

The single soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, transforming Tommy James and the Shondells into one of the biggest acts of the era. The breakthrough launched an extraordinary run of hits that included “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Mony Mony,” “Crimson and Clover,” and “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” firmly establishing James as one of the defining voices of ’60s rock.

“I think one of the reasons [our songs] hold up today and probably will for a long time is because we weren’t writing about political events,” James told Classic Bands. “We weren’t necessarily putting ourselves in the ’60s. We paid very little attention to what was going on around us, and just kind of wrote from the heart, and wrote from our feelings. I’m very glad that we kept it like that, ’cause that’s the reason I think that we’re still around and why our records still get covered.”

Its appeal has endured for generations.

With its infectious beat, singalong chorus, and unmistakable garage-rock energy, “Hanky Panky” has remained a staple of oldies radio and classic rock playlists for decades. The story behind its unlikely rise, from forgotten local release to nationwide chart-topper, has become one of the most celebrated comeback stories in rock history.

“It was very important for us to always stretch the envelope and I believe that it’s the reason why we had so many hits,” James said years later. “You know, we ended up with twenty three gold singles and nine platinum albums and we sold over a hundred million records. When you look at it, this was only an eight year period of time, but now it’s been forty four years in the major leagues. This is a business that maybe gives you two or three years, so truly I am very grateful for the longevity. It’s been an amazing time.”

Sixty years after it climbed to No. 1, “Hanky Panky” continues to sound as energetic and infectious as ever. Featuring an 18-year-old singer from Michigan, the 1966 classic remains the song that introduced Tommy James to the world and launched one of rock’s most remarkable careers.

While American classics like The Grapes of Wrath, 1984, or Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are usually considered the best of U.S. literature, several books published within the last few decades can also be considered masterpieces. For instance, the publication Collider recently released a ranking of “the 10 best American books of the 21st century.”

According to Collider, the top American books released after 2000 include The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins from 2008, Stephen King‘s 2004 hit The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower, and No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, published in 2005. Journalist Patrick Radden Keefe‘s 2021 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction-winning work, Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty, took home the title of the “best American book of the 21st century.”

The book, which delves into Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family’s role in America’s opioid epidemic, has a score of 4.53 out of 5 from 149,195 readers on Goodreads.

Patrick Radden Keefe Discussed the Legacy of ‘Empire of Pain’ in a 2026 Interview

In a March 2026 interview with Penguin Random House, Keefe, who also wrote the nonfiction books Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland (2018) and London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a Family’s Search for Truth (2026), discussed the impact of Empire of Pain. He explained that his role as an investigative journalist was to speak to those involved with the situation and to ideally “pin a butterfly down.”

“But the truth is that the story often keeps going. And keeps evolving after you’ve written your story. And sometimes the writing that you do actually changes those events. I should say most of the time it doesn’t,” said the New Yorker staff writer.

He went on to say that he “spent years looking into this family and their role in helping kickstart the opioid epidemic” when writing Empire of Pain.

“Initially, there was an article in The New Yorker and then this book, Empire of Pain. Part of what I was trying to do was create a situation in which the family couldn’t disassociate itself from the downstream consequences of these business decisions they had made in terms of how OxyContin, this drug that they made billions of dollars from, was marketed. After the book came out, you had this sequence of events. There was a legal process, a bankruptcy case in which the family ultimately agreed to pay billions and billions of dollars,” said the journalist in the March 2026 interview.

In addition, he said that the Sackler family ended up facing “another kind of accountability, a sort of public-shaming factor in a way” after the “Oscar-nominated documentary, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed about Nan Goldin and her campaign” was released in 2022. He also noted that he had written about Goldin, a famed photographer who “was pressing to have all these different art museums and these kind of illustrious institutons” where Sacklers donated to remove the family name, in Empire of Pain.

“Nan Goldin, this revered American photographer who had been addicted to OxyContin, initially read the article that I wrote in the New Yorker and then said, ‘I’m going to start a campaign. I’m going to try and persuade these institutions to take that name down,'” said Keefe.

He clarified that he doesn’t “take any direct credit for that.”

“But when I started working on the Sackler story, the Sacklers were moving through the world without any real, they weren’t even getting asked questions about any responsibility that they might have had for the opioid crisis,” continued Keefe during the Penguin Random House interview. “And to see people like Nan Goldin kind of take the stuff that I’ve managed to reveal in my reporting and run with it more as activists, right? And sort of see what they can do in terms of bringing about accountability was an incredibly humbling but also affirming thing.”

Years before Tom Waits would reinvent himself in the ’80s with his particular brand of abrasive, avant-garde singer/songwriter music, a lesser known psychedelic blues-rock band had completely blown open the music world with one of the most unique albums ever created. “Trout Mask Replica” is an album that I have always seen as a rite of passage for serious music fans. I’ll just come right out and say it, the album sounds genuinely horrendous. It is the most dissonant, nonsensical, abrasive, and atonal piece of rock music I’ve engaged with in my life. It was written on a piano by a man who did not know how to play the piano– and that’s the point. Because of this, the album is one of the most raw expressions one can listen to, and that is perhaps why in 2010 it was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.

Some call it a disaster, while many call it one of the greatest records of all time. So what is the allure of “Trout Mask Replica?” I think I find myself in line with Vox, who put out a great episode on their Earworm series, seeking to show everyone why this ‘awful sounding album’ is one of the most important ever.

Tom Waits would name the record as one of his favorites in an interview with The Guardian, and any fan of his can absolutely see the massive influence that “Trout Mask Replica” had on him. Between with instrumentation, vocal delivery, and commitment to sounding utterly unique, the album is spiritually in line with everything waits would go on to do.

‘Trout Mask Replica” is an album that defies a lot of easy categorization. It’s an extremely painful listening experience, as well as one of the most pure musical expressions one can experience. It’s similar to how an inexperienced child can wield all the emotion and life of an accomplished musician, but unlike them, can’t learn the language of music to transcribe it eloquently, so instead the child just bangs on the piano.

The album is an experience in the way sound and tone can stir emotion. It strips away all the polish and sophistication of musical manners in favor of treating the band like a vehicle for pure noise. It’s a psychologically weathering experience that transports you unlike any other piece of music you will find.

Hayden Panettiere died on Aug. 16, 2026, just days shy of her 37th birthday.

The Nashville star was in several high profile relationships throughout her life, as well as more low-key romances.

Her previous partners included Laguna Beach and The Traitors star Stephen Colletti, football player Scotty McKnight, her much-older Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia, boxer Wladimir Klitschko and convicted domestic abuser Brian Hickerson.

In addition to her public consensual relationships, however, Panettiere revealed in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning that she was in non-consensual sexual situations with at least two much older famous men.

In one incident, she alleged that an older woman she considered a friend put a then-18-year-old Panettiere in a bed with a much-older singer, but that she was able to flee before anything happened to her. In a separate incident, an older, award-winning actor flashed his genitals at her when she was 19.

Panettiere did not name the men involved in either incident, explaining to the Hollywood Reporter, “It was a bad look for them and [the people I didn’t name] were generally people within my industry. They’re people I could run into again. I didn’t want to put myself in that position. Things happened a long time ago, but it was to protect me and my company from being sued by some very pissed-off famous people.”

TMZ reported that police claimed he punched the petite starlet “with a closed fist on the right side of her face.” A police report indicated that Panettiere’s face was swollen and red and that she told responding deputies that Hickerson was “throwing her around and punched her.” Hickerson was also charged with interfering with a police officer for allegedly refusing to identify himself to the cops on the scene.

TMZ reported Panettiere got a restraining order against Hickerson in Wyoming after the February 2020 incident, claiming that Hickerson beat, spit on her, threw her around, poured water on her and threw things when he drank.

In July 2020, a California judge later approved a restraining order in the Golden State as well after Panettiere filed a complaint against Hickerson, alleging multiple domestic violence incidents to the Santa Monica and Los Angeles police departments. PEOPLE reported Hickerson was arrested on four felony charges of corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant (Panettiere), two felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and one felony charge of intimidating a witness (Panettiere), as well as misdemeanor battery of a spouse or cohabitant (Panettiere).

“I am coming forward with the truth about what happened to me with the hope that my story will empower others in abusive relationships to get the help they need and deserve,” Panettiere said in a statement at the time. “I am prepared to do my part to make sure this man never hurts anyone again. I’m grateful for my support system, which helped me find the courage to regain my voice and my life.”

In April 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse/cohabitant and was sentenced to 45 days in jail, four years of probation, 52 domestic violence classes and $500 restitution, PEOPLE reported. In exchange for a guilty plea, the rest of his charges stemming from his July 2020 arrest were dropped.

In late March 2022, Panettiere and Hickerson were both caught on camera in a massive bar brawl—this time not fighting one another, but other people. Thankfully, by that July, the pair reportedly split.

“It was a very dark and complicated time in my life,” Panettiere told PEOPLE in July 2022 of her relationship with Hickerson. “But a lot of women go through what I went through, and I want people to know it’s OK to ask for help.”

Brian Hickerson — one of the last people to see Hayden Panettiere alive — has deleted his social media profile.

On Monday, August 17, just one day after Panettiere’s death, Hickerson’s Instagram profile was deleted. His account was inactive for years prior to her passing.

The news comes as more details emerge in the Remember the Titans star’s untimely death.

According to TMZ, two ambulances arrived at a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment on Sunday, August 16, where Hickerson and his brother were living. The on-again, off-again couple had flown from Los Angeles to South Carolina the evening prior.

Despite the call for two ambulances, nobody was seen being wheeled out, and it’s unclear whether Hickerson was also attended to by first responders.

“According to dispatch audio, Hayden was in cardiac arrest and the caller suspected it was the result of an overdose,” TMZ reported.

Before her death, the Nashville star opened up about her abusive relationship with Hickerson during an appearance on On Purpose With Jay Shetty.

“I found myself in a terrible position,” she said in May. “The abuse, the fact that I allowed this person not only into my life, but for how long I put up with it. I realized that I was more afraid of being alone than being abused.”

She added, “We could be dancing and joking, and then a switch would flip and suddenly it was on. Something would snap, and it was like watching a predator suddenly smell blood.”

The Ice Princess star told listeners to not “believe just what you see in a picture.”

“There is so much more going on, so much more going on. Truth is stranger than fiction.”

For the last five months, A Court of Thorns and Roses fans have scoured the internet for clues. They’ve looked for signs of the titles for the upcoming ACOTAR books.

Back in March 2026, Sarah J. Maas went on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast with Alex Cooper to share the exciting news. Not only would she have one more book in the world of ACOTAR coming, but there would be two. The first would arrive in October, while fans would have to wait until January 2027 for the second.

Despite not having titles or plot details, fans were immediately excited. Now, finally, titles have been revealed, with Maas sharing them in back-to-back posts on Instagram. At the same time, LA, New York, and Denver were hit with digital billboards announcing the exciting news.

‘ACOTAR’ 6 Book Title

The sixth book title is A Court of Splintered Harmony. It will be released on Oct. 27, 2026, and there are many midnight drop parties happening around the world.

The caption for the novel reads “What was broken will be remade.” This doesn’t give us too many details about what to expect, but it adds a little more than the question mark that has been over the book’s head since the initial announcement.

As for the seventh book, which will be released on Jan. 12, 2026, it’s titled A Court of Forgotten Melody.

Following the tragic death of actor Hayden Panettiere, many are looking back at her final moments and one of her last public appearances, where she revealed how she wanted to be remembered.

This Is Me: A Reckoning detailed her upbringing as a child star, which affected her at a young age and her loss of privacy. Being constantly told who she needed to be also affected her identity as an adult, and recounts multiple uncomfortable incidents involving sexual advances and unwanted, inappropriate moments with people in the industry.

Panettiere also publicly came out as bisexual in her memoir, while also revealing her postpartum depression after having a traumatic delivery with her daughter, Kaya, in 2014. It was largely attributed to her drinking and eventual addiction, and pill use that she was introduced to as a teen.

According to reports, authorities responded to a 911 call placed by “an acquaintance” of the actor after having found her unresponsive in her home. Medical assistance was administered, but Panettiere was pronounced dead later on. Authorities revealed that a “preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances,” with them reporting she died from an apparent overdose and cardiac arrest.

A rep from Nashville shared the news of her death on behalf of Panettiere’s father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere.

“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss,” they reported.

Blended families come in all shapes, and few in Hollywood stretch quite as far as the one Mary Steenburgen described this week. Standing on a red carpet to celebrate her husband, the Oscar winner reflected warmly on the the rock legend she now calls a relative.

The occasion was the 28th Television Academy Hall of Fame ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Aug. 13, where Ted Danson was among the honorees. It’s only been around 18 months since Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress Michelle Trachtenberg died from complications due to diabetes after her liver transplant. In June 2026, Daveigh Chase passed away due to complications from AIDS. 

Now, it’s Panettiere, who had shared her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression in the past. While the cause of death is still unknown, she was found by a friend suffering from cardiac arrest just three years after her brother died of an unknown heart condition.

In an Instagram post, the Spy Kids star shared her tribute to Panettiere and other child actors who have passed away. She specifically called out Trachtenberg and Chase, noting that they aren’t just names from her childhood. One of Stephen King’s most terrifying creations is set to return in the very near future.

According to Deadline, HBO is officially moving forward with plans to begin production on It: Welcome to Derry’s second season.

In a short video confirming Welcome to Derry season two, HBO also confirmed that the series is jumping back in time to the year 1935, focusing on the previous reign of terror for Bill Skarsgård’s monstrous Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

As reported by the outlet, HBO was already eager to greenlight the series for another season, with the network mainly waiting to confirm key creative details related to the second season’s premise and plot.

“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”

“We know It: Welcome to Derry will continue to captivate viewers with its spine-tingling new journey into the 1930s for Season 2,” Clancy Collins White, Warner Bros. Television’s President of Creative Affairs, added. “We look forward to bringing fans back to the town of Derry to experience the next chapter and uncover even more of what lies beneath the surface.”

Borrowing key narrative elements from Stephen King’s original novel, the second season of It: Welcome to Derry will specifically focus on Pennywise’s encounter with the Bradley Gang, a collection of Great Depression-era bank robbers who are referenced in Welcome to Derry‘s first season.

“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege,” Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who have been involved with the franchise since their original It film back in 2017, said of the announcement. “The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”

It turns out, former Spice Girls singer Emma Bunton‘s platform sneakers were function over fashion when it came to one of her wardrobe choices as Baby Spice.

“When I first started dancing in those it was really easy. Didn’t think anything of it,” she recalled. “It started to get a little bit harder I think when we were traveling so much, and you’re slightly tired, and then you’re, you know, you are literally trying to stay up on stilts.”

Bunton, now 50, recalled two times when she actually fell in public: once at the MTV Europe Music Awards and another time in front of Madonna.

“I was actually on tour, and I remember looking out to the crowd, and Madonna was watching us,” she recalled. “So I was literally at this moment looking at her like, ‘Madonna’s in the crowd!’ and then I fell over.”

Accidents aside, the platform sneakers, along with her baby doll dresses became her signature look during her time with the iconic. girl group. Her Spice Girls fashion origin story somewhat applies to the rest of the group as they all agreed to have individual looks.
