1972 Ballad Made Famous By Elvis Presley Became a Grammy-Winning Hit for a Country Icon 10 Years Later

Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:49pm

A decade before Willie Nelsonearned a Grammy for his 1982 recording of "Always on My Mind," the song was largely put on the map by none other than Elvis Presley.

10 years earlier in 1972, Elvis released his now-iconic version of the heartfelt ballad, written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher and Mark James — but the King of Rock and Roll was hardly the first artist to take the song for a spin in the recording studio.

"Always on My Mind" was first recorded and released by Gwen McCrae in March 1972, followed by Brenda Lee's version just a few months later. By October of that year, Presley had put out his powerful rendition of the ballad, turning it into a commercial chart success and setting the stage for future widespread popularity.

In 1982, Nelson lent his voice to the endearing song, which served as the title track and lead single off his 1982 studio album of the same name. Nelson's version became a massive success, soaring to No. 1 on the Country Singles chart and No. 5 on the Hot 100.

"Always on My Mind" even earned Nelson a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1983, and the song was also nominated for Record of the Year at the same ceremony.

To this day, "Always on My Mind" — which has since been covered by other artists like the Pet Shop Boyz in 1987 — remains a timeless classic, and is even been considered to be one of Nelson's best songs ever, according to Rolling Stone. In April 2025, the publication released a list of "The 50 Best Willie Nelson Songs," where "Always on My Mind" was placed at No. 8.

Shannon Miller Calls This the 'Highlight' of the 2026 U.S. Gymnastics Championships

Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:48pm

Fans of the Magnificent Seven delighted in seeing six of the seven gymnasts from the 1996 gold medal-winning U.S. women’s gymnastics team reunite this weekend at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Phoenix, AZ. Not only did the storied team reunite to celebrate the 30th anniversary of bringing home America’s first-ever women’s team gymnastics gold medal, but athletes like Shannon Miller also took in the competition in support of the sport’s next generation. When technical difficulties temporarily paused the competition, unexpected fun broke out. Miller calls it the “highlight” of the tournament. Watching from home, it’s clear why.

The U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Team Had an Unexpected Dance Break View this post on Instagram

The 2026 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships were held August 6–9 in Phoenix. During a technical-difficulties break, members of the U.S. men’s team spontaneously broke into a Saturday Night Fever-style dance break. Dancing to “Cha Cha Slide” by DJ Casper, the men’s team entertained the crowd, and themselves, with the unplanned moment.

Shannon Miller Called It the “Highlight” of the Weekend

Shannon Miller called the dance break the highlight of the weekend. She’s not alone. Fans were quick to tumble into the comments section of a video shared online to celebrate the fun and unexpected moment.

“We need a dance break in the middle of every competition from here on,” one wrote.

Another added, “Men’s team having fun!🥰 Love it!😍”

“This was one of the best ‘goofs’ to ever happen in sports. All the guys doing the Cha Cha Slide, it was just a good time,” gushed one more.

Saturday Night Fever took over the U.S. Gymnastics Championships! 🕺

♬ original sound - NBC Olympics & Paralympics

Competitive gymnastics is often presented with the utmost seriousness. Athletes train from a very young age, often sacrificing other childhood experiences to pursue the dream of one day becoming an Olympian.

Fans watch every landing and turn while judges analyze and scrutinize a gymnast’s every move. Behind the competitive gazes and perfect scores, the athletes are teammates, friends and young people who know that blowing off steam and having fun when the moment calls for it can only increase their competitive edge.

Why Fans Love Seeing Gymnasts Have Fun

Fans love seeing a more human side of male gymnasts. While the women’s teams over the years, including Miller’s Magnificent Seven, have shown fans their more emotional sides, including the highs and lows of competition, it’s still rare for male gymnasts to let down their stoic facade and express themselves.

Shannon Miller, a six-time Olympic medalist, knows firsthand what it’s like to perform under the bright lights of Olympic-level competition. The 1996 U.S. women’s gymnastics team entered the Atlanta Games with the hopes of an entire nation on their young shoulders. A full team effort, the Magnificent Seven all worked together to bring home a gold medal.

Shannon Miller may know that earning top scores and sticking the perfect landing is what competition is the end goal, but having fun in the process is what it’s all about.

Iconic '70s Rock Band Chicago Announces Update on 2026 Tour

Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:45pm

Even after more than five decades on the road, Chicago isn't slowing down.

The legendary rock band has announced another update to its 2026 Windy Cities Tour, adding three new November performances to an already packed schedule. The newly announced concerts will take place at Wind Creek Event Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 5, Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Connecticut, on Nov. 11, and Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca, New York, on Nov. 14.

The additional dates continue a banner year for the band.

Chicago launched 2026 with a nine-show residency at The Venetian in Las Vegas before kicking off its North American Windy Cities Tour in the spring. While many of the summer performances feature Styx as a special guest, the newly announced November shows will be headlining appearances for Chicago alone.

The tour celebrates one of rock's most enduring catalogs.

Since forming in 1967, Chicago has built a legacy by blending rock, jazz, pop, and soul into a sound that became instantly recognizable thanks to its signature horn section. The band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and produced an extraordinary run of classics, including "25 or 6 to 4," "Saturday in the Park," "If You Leave Me Now," "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "You're the Inspiration."

Few bands have matched Chicago's longevity.

The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. Despite lineup changes over the decades, Chicago has remained one of the busiest touring acts in classic rock, continuing to perform for audiences around the world while introducing its music to new generations.

In recent years, the lineup has changed dramatically. Chicago co-founders Robert Lamm and James Pankow have stopped touring due to health issues, but cofounder, trumpet player and singer Lee Loughnane, remains active and performing throughout the tour. Meanwhile, founding member Walter Parazaider died at 81 in June this year after battling Alzheimer's disease.

"I always preferred being in the background, not having to put myself out in front and talk to the audience and do all that," Loughnane told Rolling Stone. "I just sort of left that to the other guys. And now I don't have any choice. I've got to be out there doing more things than I ever imagined that I would be doing. And I'm enjoying it. You grow with whatever it is you need to do at the time."

The band's current lineup includes Loughnane, Ray Herrmann (saxophone/flute), Wally Reyes Jr. (drums), Ramon "Ray" Yslas (percussion), Nick Lane (trombone), Tony Obrohta (guitar), Eric Baines (bass/vocals), Carlos Murguía (keyboards/vocals) and Justin Avery (keyboards/vocals) and Rudy Cardenas stepping into the role of lead vocalist.

With the latest concert additions, Chicago's 2026 itinerary stretches even further into the fall, giving fans more opportunities to see the iconic band live. More than 55 years after emerging as one of the defining rock groups of the 1970s, Chicago continues to prove that its unmistakable sound and its commitment to the stage remain as strong as ever.

Best-Selling Author’s Landmark ‘Philip Marlowe’ Novel From 1954 Ranked the No. 1 Best Crime Book of All Time

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:35pm

Raymond Chandler, a master of hard-boiled detective fiction, released his sixth novel, The Long Goodbye, in March 1954 in the U.S. And now, more than 70 years later, the landmark novel has yet to leave the zeitgeist, with Collider recently ranking it the No. 1 best crime book of all time.

It's a surprising choice for the top spot, especially considering Chandler wrote seven Philip Marlowe novels, and the outlet had iconic crime reads likeMichael Connelly's The Lincoln Lawyer, Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, and Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, at its disposal.

Chandler's first Philip Marlowe mystery, The Big Sleep, made the list, landing at No. 5, but the coveted top spot ultimately went to Chandler's sixth tale.

    View this post on Instagram

First published in the U.K. in 1953, The Long Goodbye is widely considered a masterwork in the crime genre. It’s also regarded as one of the author’s most ambitious and more emotional and autobiographical stories, due to its themes of loneliness, aging, and post-WWII societal impacts.

There was another deeply personal reason this novel felt different from the others in the series. Chandler was writing it while his wife, Cissy, was seriously ill, giving the story's themes an especially painful resonance.

“The Long Goodbye feels a lot more personal compared to Chandler’s earlier novels,” Collider writes. “The connection between Marlowe and Lennox lays the foundation for the narrative, and this loyalty also humanizes Marlowe more than ever before. The author uses the investigation to criticize how money and power can control popular opinion, which adds another layer of nuance to the already intriguing mystery.”

A web of murder, disillusionment, and betrayal, The Long Goodbye follows Chandler’s infamous private investigator as he befriends Terry Lennox, a war veteran who’s married to a wealthy woman. When she turns up dead, Terry flees and leaves Marlowe to answer to the cops and, worse, the mob. Though the case is closed almost immediately with Lennox blamed for the crime, Marlowe senses there’s more to the story.

“His investigation eventually connects him to Roger Wade,” Collider explains, “a successful novelist whose career and marriage are being destroyed by alcoholism. Although the two cases initially appear separate, Chandler gradually brings them together without allowing the mystery to overpower the characters.”

Winner of the prestigious Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1955, The Long Goodbye has since become a perennial bestseller, staying continuously in print worldwide and often represented in classic literature and mystery bestseller lists.

In 1973, the book, like several of Chandler’s other famous works including The Big Sleep, Double Indemnity, and Farewell, My Lovely, was adapted for the screen. A satirical neo-noir, the film was directed by Robert Altman and starred Elliott Gould as Marlowe, and received both critical and commercial acclaim.

As for Chandler, the author himself has been described as a “lovable grump” and “hopeless cat-lover,” with the Marginalian also calling him “one of the most celebrated novelists and screenwriters in literary history.”

In March 1957, two years before his death, Chandler reflected on the strange persistence of his identity as a writer, offering the public a little more insight into who he is as a person.

“I am the same man I was when I was a struggling nobody,” he said in 1957 per the outlet. “I feel the same. I know more, it is true, break all the rules and get away with it, but that doesn’t make me important. I may have written the most beautiful American vernacular that has ever been written (some people think I have), but if it is so, I am still a writer trying to find his way through a maze. Should I be anything else? I can’t see it.”

A year later, the author sat down with another literary giant, Ian Fleming, for a BBC radio discussion about their respective heroes, Philip Marlowe and James Bond. That conversation, a wide-ranging talk that again gave fans a peek into Marlowe's maker, has since become the only surviving recording of Chandler’s voice.

“Your hero, Philip Marlowe, is a real hero—he behaves heroically,” Fleming noted, speaking about Marlowe, who is tough, honest, and loyal.

“A man with his job can’t afford to feel tender emotions—he feels them, but he has to quell them,” Chandler responded, revealing exactly what separated his detective from Fleming’s dapper spy.

Playback, Chandler’s seventh and final novel, was published inOctober 1958. Less than a year later, Chandler died. But his legacy lives on.

More than seven decades later, Chandler, who said he was just a writer trying to navigate his way through a maze, has found his way to the top once again.

Reese Witherspoon’s Dad Released From Hospital After Scary Poolside Incident

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:25pm

Reese Witherspoon's father, Dr. John Witherspoon, has been released from the hospital and is back home following a scary incident that occurred on Friday, Aug. 7, Page Six reports.

A source told the outlet that he was released from the hospital on Sunday, Aug. 9, after he was found at his building, face down on the concrete near the pool. A resident spotted him and alerted the doorman, who then called authorities.

“The doorman and building manager rolled him over, and they said, ‘Dr. Witherspoon, are you OK?’” The source further told Page Six. “He blinked his eyes, and that’s when he was rushed to the hospital.”

On the same night as his fall, the actress confirmed her father's accident.

“Earlier today, several outlets reported that my dad was taken to the hospital after a fall. I want to let everyone know that he is fine now. He is being taken care of by wonderful doctors and nurses,” she wrote. “Thank you to everyone who reached out. It means the world to our family.”

She did not share any additional details about the circumstances surrounding the fall.

"Prayers to Reese's father hopefully he makes a full recover," another person commented.

Witherspoon has also credited her parents with supporting her throughout her career, including in an interview with Marie Claire dating back to 2008.

“I had parents who believed I could do anything,” she expressed, "and I know how that made me feel. I think both my parents, having careers in the medical profession, feel they are helping people on a daily basis, and that was inculcated in me as a value.”

Joseph and Kendra Duggar Withdraw Not Guilty Pleas in Child Endangerment Case

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:09pm

Joseph Duggar and Kendra Duggar have withdrawn their not guilty pleas in their child endangerment case.

According to Us Weekly, the couple were allowed to skip a Monday, Aug. 10, court hearing in Arkansas after both submitted pleas by order to the court.

Joseph and Kendra are now allowed to enter guilty or no contest pleas, according to a spokesperson for the Washington County District Court who spoke to People. A judge overseeing the case will now have the opportunity to accept those pleas and determine whether the couple will serve jail time or pay penalties.

RELATED: Kendra Duggar’s Parents Break Silence on Son-in-Law Joseph Duggar’s Arrest

Joseph, 31, was previously arrested and charged with Lewd and Lascivious Behavior involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor in Florida in March.

Two days later, Joseph and Kendra were hit with additional child endangerment charges in Arkansas that are unrelated to Joseph's Florida case. The couple face four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.

Kendra, 27, was released from jail shortly after her arrest after posting a $1,470 bond. Joseph, meanwhile, was released from custody in Florida after posting a $600,000 bond on March 31.

In April, Kendra's lawyer submitted a motion to dissolve a no-contact order against her alleged victims. Per the documents, the unnamed victims “have expressed a desire to have contact” with Kendra after she “complied” with the order's terms.

Later that day, a judge approved the request and dissolved the no-contact order.

“It is further ordered that the Arkansas Department of Human Services is authorized to supervise, communicate and facilitate reunification between the Defendant and the individuals previously covered in the no contact order,” the judge's ruling read.

Joseph and Kendra have been married since 2017 and share four young children.

World Market's Botanical Stoneware Serving Platter Elevates Any Table Setting

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:05pm

Botanical prints bring a fresh, romantic charm that can give decor an almost old-world quality without feeling stodgy. Those sort of natural shapes and patterns inspired by flowers and foliage have kind of a calming feel, too, which is a nice sentiment to bring to your dinner (or breakfast or lunch) table. Because, let's face it, meal times can often feel rushed. If a print can even hint at telling you to slow down a little, why not give it a try?

I have a small collection of different types of tableware so I can set things up depending on my mood. And, to be honest, I'm more of a mix-and-match kind of girl, so I like having an eclectic mix of pieces so I can create a one-of-a-kind look, even if what I'm serving on a random Wednesday isn't all that exciting. At least the table looks interesting.

Legendary ‘70s Drummer Facing 'Serious Health Issues' as Band Cancels Show

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 6:01pm

ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard is reportedly facing serious health problems that have already begun affecting the legendary rock band's tour.

Beard, 77, was absent when ZZ Top performed in Saratoga, California, on Saturday, August  8, with Michael Monahan filling in behind the drums. TMZ reported that Beard is currently dealing with "serious health issues," though the exact nature of his condition has not been disclosed.

The band also abruptly canceled its August 5 performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. At the time, the band didn't disclose Beard's condition, instead attributing the cancellation to circumstances it couldn't overcome.

“Insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance,” frontman Billy F Gibbons said in a statement shared to the band’s Instagram page. “Friends, fans and followers of ZZ Top are the best in the business and the band is counting on everyone to bear with us for this brief interruption.”

Sources have since told TMZ that Beard's health was behind the cancellation.

It's not the first time health problems have forced Beard away from the stage. In 2025, he temporarily stepped back from performing "to attend to a health issue," with longtime substitute drummer John Douglas taking his place.

Beard has been behind the drums for ZZ Top since 1969, alongside Gibbons and late bassist Dusty Hill. The Texas rockers found success in the '70s with songs including “La Grange” and “Tush” before reaching a new generation during the MTV era with hits like “Gimme All Your Lovin'” and “Legs.”

Hill died in 2021 and was replaced by longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis. ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

For now, the band's The Big One! tour is still scheduled to continue through October 9, with its next performance set for 11 in Redmond, Washington.

One month after her father made a posthumous cameo in Larry David’s new series Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, which marked his last on-screen appearance, Romy guest-starred on the show. She portrayed a nurse who tends to President William Henry Harrison (Fred Melamed).

This is not the first time she's worked with David, appearing in the comedian's HBO series, Curb Your Enthusiasm, as a cashier in 2021. As for Rob, his appearance was for a sketch where he played George Washington, with the episode airing on July 3. And then there's Rob's son Jake, who appeared in the first episode of Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness as a World War I soldier.

Earlier this month, Romy and Jake made a rare public appearance, throwing out the first pitch at the Los Angeles Dodgers game against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, Aug. 2. And shortly after, Jake shared a sweet tribute to his father.

“The @dodgers have always been a huge part of our family,” Jake wrote on Instagram. “My dad and I could talk baseball for hours, and I truly never felt closer to him than when we’d watch games together. Dodger Stadium is a place we’d love to come to as a family.”

“Romy and I wanted to honor our mom and dad by throwing out a ceremonial first pitch for each of them. We’re grateful the Dodgers helped make this moment so special," he added.

Ronb and his wife Michele were murdered in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, 2025. Their other son, Nick, was arrested and is charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He has pled guilty and is awaiting trial. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

1978 Yacht Rock Song, Written by Neil Young, Sent a 26-Year-Old All the Way to No. 1

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 5:25pm

Nicolette Larson’s “Lotta Love” has a whole lotta fascinating backstory. Not only did the 1978 song, written the legendary Neil Young, become Larson’s first solo hit, taking the 26-year-old singer to No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, but it might have never happened had she not found the song on the floor of Young’s pickup truck.

Released on her debut studio album, Nicolette, in September 1978, then a month later as a single, “Lotta Love” has been called a “kitchen sink” song, as it features a massive production of horns, strings, and soaring vocals. Jazz saxophonist Plas Johnson even lays down a flute solo before Memphis Horns' Andrew Love delivers on the sax.

It’s a lot, but it all worked.

The track reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the outlet’s AC chart the following year in February. The song also became the highest-ranked yacht rock song by a woman, landing at No. 29 on BroadwayWorld’s comprehensive list of best yacht rock songs—a massive feat for a woman in a male-dominated genre.

Behind the notes, the song is a wealth of fun facts. First and foremost, it was written by Young himself. Rock history has it that Larson found a copy of “Lotta Love” on the floor of Young’s truck, slipped it into his tape deck, and fell in love with what she heard.

“I got that song off a tape I found lying on the floor of Neil’s car,” Larson said in a 1978 interview, per American Songwriter. “I popped it in the tape player and commented on what a great song it was. Neil said, ‘You want it? It’s yours.’”

Larson, who cut her teeth singing backup for Young, met the Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young alum a year earlier when Linda Ronstadt recommended Larson to Young as a harmony vocalist.

“I didn’t know much about Neil Young,” Larson said, per American Songwriter. “But we went over and sat by the fireplace, and Neil ran down all the songs he had just written, about 20 of them. We sang harmonies with him, and he was jazzed.”

Together, those songs became Young’s eighth studio album, American Stars ‘n Bars, released in 1977 and featuring one of his greatest songs of all time, “Like a Hurricane.” Larson and Ronstadt, along with Carole Mayedo and Ben Keith, were credited as The Bullets singing backup on the album’s side one.

Months later, Young recruited Larson for his following album, Comes a Time. She fronted his acoustic ensemble, known as the Gone With the Wind Orchestra, and, in doing so, caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records, which signed Larson and paved the way for her solo debut.

Featuring an impressive roster of collaborators—from Little Feat keyboardist Billy Payne and guitarist Paul Barrere, to Ronstadt and Michael McDonald on backing vocals, and Eddie Van Halen on guitar for “Can’t Get Away From You”—Nicolette gave Larson the perfect showcase for her solo hit.

By then, she had already established herself as a sought-after backing and session vocalist, working alongside Emmylou Harris and others. But “Lotta Love” finally put Larson in her own spotlight.

Rolling Stone named Larson Female Vocalist of 1978, with all the attention and fandom helping propel her debut album, which reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200, to Gold certification by the RIAA. The song even transcended borders, with Canada (No. 4), Australia (No. 11), and New Zealand (No. 22) giving it airplay.

Though Larson had trouble replicating the success of “Lotta Love,” she came close with another yacht rock legend, Michael McDonald. The two recorded “Let Me Go, Love” in 1979. The soft rock duet reached No. 35 on the charts.

In the mid-’80s, she crossed over into country and managed several chart-climbers, including her track, “That’s How You Know When Love’s Right,” recorded with Steve Wariner.

Larson passed away in December 1997 from complications of cerebral edema, but her legacy lives on. A two-night tribute concert named after her defining track was held in her honor, with music legends Dan Fogelberg, Joe Walsh, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Carole King, and so many more all performing.

Nearly 50 years later, “Lotta Love” remains the artist’s signature hit and career-launching calling card. And it continues to get a whole lotta love.

A New Michael Jackson Movie Using No Actors, Only His Own Footage, Releases This Month

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 5:12pm

The King of Pop has been everywhere on screen this year, played by a nephew in one film and put on trial again in a streaming series. The next project to carry his name takes the opposite approach and hands the story back to the man himself. Michael Jackson: A Life in Music is built entirely from real footage.

The documentary is set to open in theaters on August 29, carries a PG-13 rating and runs two hours and nine minutes. Rather than dramatize his life, it relies entirely on archival material, tracing his path from a child performer with the Jackson 5 through the breakthrough albums and stadium concerts that made him the most famous entertainer on the planet. That's it; no reconstructed scenes or talking head interviews.

A life in music is a wide canvas for an artist who reshaped pop, dance and the music video across four decades. The Jackson 5 years gave way to the solo run of Off the Wall, Thrillerand Bad, records that turned him into a global phenomenon and made moments like the famous "moonwalk" debut on Motown 25 part of history. An archival film like this means fans can return to those performances as they happened.

Listings show Jackson appearing throughout alongside brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy. The archival cast also gathers a who's who of the eras he moved through, from Diana Ross, Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder to television fixtures like Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett and Barbara Walters. The film is listed as a French production, part of a long European fascination with Jackson's music and myth.

This archival documentary follows the blockbuster biopic Michael, the Antoine Fuqua drama starring Jaafar Jackson, which became a major box-office success before drawing criticism for sidestepping the abuse allegations that trailed Jackson for years. The biopic was made with his family's cooperation, yet still prompted a sharp rebuke from his daughter, Paris, who dismissed parts of it as pure fantasy. The archival film also arrives after a Netflix docuseries revisited his 2005 trial, in which he was acquitted.

For fans who grew up on the videos and the tours, an all-archival portrait offers something the previous recreations cannot, namely Jackson performing as himself at each stage of his career. Whether the film reckons with the fuller, more contested picture of his life remains to be seen. Michael Jackson: A Life in Music reaches theaters August 29.

She spoke to The Hollywood Reporterin April about her time on the show.

“It’s been beautiful because there’s been kind of a parallel growth with my character, Olivia Benson, and Mariska, and we had each other to go through this together — becoming a leader, finding the equilibrium in that, becoming a mother on the show and having to manage my people, my squad, when we used to be even, and then all of a sudden you’re the boss," she said.

The actress has become an executive producer and director on Special Victims Unit, even directing the 600th episode.

“They just asked me to direct the 600th! Which is episode six next year. It’s crazy. Even I can’t download it. Even I go, ‘Wait, what?!’ No, it’s nuts,” she told THR.

'Inexplicable' 1969 Hit, Written in 30 Minutes, Had a 6-Week Run at No. 1 for Zager & Evans 57 Years Ago

    Mon, 08/10/2026 - 4:47pm

In 1969, a futuristic song recorded for just $500 by two Nebraska musicians became one of the year's biggest hits.

Zager & Evans' "In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 6, 1969, beginning a six-week run at the top of the chart. It would also spend three weeks at No. 1 in the U.K., turning the little-known duo of Denny Zager and Rick Evans into international stars.

The song's vision of the distant future was decidedly bleak. Beginning in the year 2525, Evans' lyrics jump forward through the centuries, imagining technological advances gradually stripping away elements of human existence.

The story behind the recording was nearly as unlikely as the song itself.

Evans wrote "In the Year 2525" in 1964 in 30 minutes while he was a member of a Lincoln, Neb., group called the Eccentrics, according to Wayne Jancik's"The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders."

"Rick was eager to try out 'In the Year 2525,' a futuristic fable of depressing proportions he had dashed off in 30 minutes," wrote Jancik. "Since 1964, the darn thing had been collecting dust in his dresser drawer. Denny agreed to perform the tune but clearly wasn't happy about it."

By the time Evans brought the song to Zager, the two musicians had formed another band, the Devilles. Zager admitted to music historian Fred Bronson for his book "The Billboard Book of Number One Hits" that his initial reaction wasn't exactly enthusiastic.

"I didn't go nutty over the song," Zager recalled, explaining that it wasn't the style of music he wanted to make.

But audiences responded differently. After Evans and Zager left their respective groups and formed a duo, they began performing "In the Year 2525" and discovered that listeners kept requesting it.

    So they took a chance.

The pair invested $500 to record "In the Year 2525" at a studio in Odessa, Texas. According to accounts of the session, the studio was located in the middle of a cow pasture. Zager wrote a new arrangement for two voices, and the musicians then had 1,000 copies pressed on their own Truth Records label.

They didn't have a major record company behind them, so they distributed the records themselves, taking copies to local radio stations and record stores.

    It worked.

A local station put "In the Year 2525" into rotation, and the song became a regional hit. RCA Records eventually heard about it and signed Zager & Evans to a recording contract.

Once the song reached the national charts, its rise was astonishingly fast. "In the Year 2525" entered the Hot 100 on June 21, 1969, at No. 72. Just three weeks later, it was No. 1.

And it wasn't going anywhere for a while.

"In the Year 2525" remained atop the Hot 100 for six weeks, putting Zager & Evans at No. 1 during an extraordinary moment in American history. Its run coincided with the Apollo 11 moon landing, and it was still No. 1 as the country approached the Woodstock festival in August.

According to "The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders," the record eventually sold more than 5 million copies. But Zager & Evans were never able to come close to duplicating its success.

"We tried everything to come up with that second hit, but it never happened," Zager said. "A lot of groups climb their way up very slowly. They get a mediocre hit, then a little bigger hit, and then they get a super-big hit and just stay in the limelight. But we were misfortunate enough to have a monster right off the top. What do you do to top it?"

Despite the song's huge success, their monster hit wasn't universally beloved.

Years later, humorist Dave Barry included "In the Year 2525" in his "Book of Bad Songs," which grew out of a reader survey about particularly disliked records.

Barry wrote that if he had to identify the song that generated the "most intense hatred, per voter," it would be Zager & Evans' hit. He called it "the inexplicable 1969 hit" and joked that it's the song "that sticks in your brain like a malignant growth."

The reaction is all the more striking considering just how thoroughly America embraced the song in 1969.

"In the Year 2525" ultimately became the only Zager & Evans single to reach the Billboard Hot 100. The duo parted ways in 1970, with RCA continuing to release previously recorded material afterward.

More than half a century later, however, the record they made for $500 in a Texas cow pasture remains impossible to separate from the summer of 1969.
