1977 Classic Named No. 1 Hit Song Became an Unconditional Timeless Anthem

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 8:15pm

While disco, funk, rock and soulful pop dominated the charts in the 1970s, Billy Joel quietly rose above the trend and delivered a head-turning ballad through “Just the Way You Are.”

Released in 1977 as part of his fifth studio album, The Stranger, the song was written by the singer as a birthday present for his wife and manager, Elizabeth Weber.

Although Joel had made a mark in the music scene thanks to his earlier hit “Piano Man,” which also became his signature song, “Just the Way You Are” also received a strong reception from the public following its debut.

The bossa nova feel and the sincerity of the lyrics instantly captivate listeners from the very first note.

The New York native once spoke about his writing process, which he described as "backwards" as compared to the traditional method.

Joel shared that he creates the melody and chords first before writing the lyrics.

“I started writing music and then later on in life, I started writing words to the music,” he shared as cited by Grammys, adding “And it's the backwards way of writing because traditional songwriting is you take words or a poem and you set it to music. I actually write music and I set words to that. Melody and chords are first."

With the song’s mass appeal, the single rose to the chart and landed No. 1 on Billboard Adult Contemporary for one week.

In addition, Joel’s track peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for 27 weeks, making this the singer’s first single to reach the US Top 10 and the UK Top 20 at No. 19.

Expanding his list of accomplishments, “Just the Way You Are” secured a top spot on the Billboard Easy Listening chart for the whole month of January 1978.

From chart-topping success, Joel proved that he was more than just a hitmaker after securing a Grammy win.

In 1979, the singer-songwriter won both Record of the Year and Song of the Year, marking his first Grammy wins.

Through the years, “Just the Way You Are” has retained its timeless appeal, prompting other artists to revive the song.

Among the famous covers is that of iconic soul and R&B singer-songwriter Barry White. His 1978 version landed at No. 12 on the U.K. chart.

Adding to the list is music legend Frank Sinatra, with his bossa nova-influenced arrangement. His revival was part of his 1980 triple album, Trilogy: Past Present Future.

Inside Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill's Enduring Friendship — and How She Broke Protocol to Honor Him

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 8:03pm

Queen Elizabeth II and Winston Churchill are both iconic figures in British history, with both having a lasting impact on the United Kingdom today.

Unsurprisingly, Elizabeth and Churchill’s paths were strongly intertwined as they navigated post-World War II Europe. Keep reading to learn about their relationship.

Was Winston Churchill Prime Minister While Elizabeth Was Queen?

Elizabeth ascended to the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952. Churchill, who served his second term in office from 1951 to 1955, was the first prime minister of Elizabeth’s reign.

Churchill had formed a strong bond with Elizabeth's father during his first term as prime minister from 1940 to 1945 as they weathered WWII together. After George died, Churchill said he "felt the loss deeply.”

Were Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill Friends?

Despite their 52-year age difference, Elizabeth and Churchill forged a very close bond throughout their time working together. They held weekly meetings to discuss government matters, and Churchill became a mentor to the new monarch, teaching her about the complexities of government.

After Churchill retired in 1955, Elizabeth wrote a personal letter praising him for his "magnanimity, constant courage, and unfailing humor," per The Churchill Project

“It would be useless to pretend that either [Anthony Eden] or any of those successors who may one day follow him in office will ever, for me, be able to hold the place of my first Prime Minister, to whom both my husband and I owe so much and for whose wise guidance during the early years of my reign I shall always be so profoundly grateful,” she wrote.

What Did Winston Churchill Say About Queen Elizabeth?

Although Churchill was initially skeptical of the young queen, politician Roy Jenkins said that he had “near idolatry” for Elizabeth and great respect for the monarchy, according to British Heritage.

Lord Moran recalled Churchill saying, “I fear they may ask her to do too much. She is doing so well.” The Prime Minister thought she was such a great fit as the monarch that he later said, per Moran, “Lovely, inspiring. All the film people in the world, if they had scoured the globe, could not have found anyone so suited to the part.”

Was Queen Elizabeth at Winston Churchill’s Funeral?

Churchill died in January 1965 at the age of 90. Elizabeth broke royal protocol by being the first person to show up at his funeral. Traditionally, the monarch does not attend funerals of non-royals and is always the last to appear at all functions. She even arrived before the coffin, granting Churchill the precedence as a national hero. Elizabeth also decided Churchill should be given a full state funeral, unheard of for a “commoner.”

In Elizabeth’s personal statement about the decision to give Churchill a state funeral, she reflected on the “outstanding man” who served his country for over 50 years in “war and peace.”

“In the hours of our greatest danger, [he] was the inspiring leader who strengthened and supported us all,” Elizabeth wrote, adding that the country owed Churchill a “debt of gratitude.”

Barack Obama and NYC’s Mayor Mamdani Sing ‘Wheels on the Bus’ with Preschoolers, and We’re Obsessed

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:50pm

Is former President Barack Obama in training to become a grandpa? While his two daughters, Malia Obama (age 27) and Sasha Obama (age 24), aren’t exactly ready to have kids anytime soon, their famous dad is enjoying some time with a younger set. Last week, Obama and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited a preschool in the Bronx, leading the kiddos in a rousing rendition of a classic childhood tune.

Obama recently posted a pic of himself and Mamdani reading to the class, captioning the image, “Great spending time with New York City’s Cutest. And thanks to @nycmayor for giving me an excuse to break out my best Wheels on the Bus.” That’s right, the political pair belted out Wheels on the Bus…and fans are obsessed.

View this post on Instagram

While the former POTUS’s post didn’t include video evidence of the absolutely amazing event, plenty of clips surfaced. And if you haven’t watched it yet, this is certainly something you can’t miss. Obama gets down to business, rolling up his sleeves and joining Mamdani in the hand movements. Yes, the duo even does the whole, “And the wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish” while waving their hands back and forth.

Following their rockstar moment, Obama and the Mayor read the children’s book ‘Alone & Together’ by Emilie Chazerand and Amandine Piu to the young audience. The tale of friendship and community was the perfect story for the pair to share with the preschoolers. But the fun didn’t end there.

Obama and Mamdani sat on the classroom’s carpet with the kiddos and posed for a few group pics. After yelling, Cheese,” the former President asked the children, “Who’s going to help me get up?” And of course, everyone pitched in. The pair’s new friends grabbed their hands and hoisted the two politicians onto their feet. Or at least, as much as four- and five-year-olds can.

Fans flocked to Obama’s Instagram post, praising the preschool adventure. One commenter wrote, “They’re going to tell their grandchildren about this one, it is too iconic. Parents save those photos!” while another said, “Love this! Two amazing leaders!”

Mamdani also shared photos of the day, adding the caption, “Today, President Barack Obama and I read to a group of toddlers at Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx.” NYC’s mayor continued, “In between singing Wheels on the Bus, we discussed our administration’s vision for this City—one where New York’s Cutest have the strongest start possible.”

Chris Hemsworth Trades Thor’s Hammer for Horsepower In This ‘Gnarly’ Family Dirt Bike Clip

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:32pm

Chris Hemsworth isn’t the only one in the family who has a penchant for adventure. The Crime 101 actor recently posted a series of absolutely amazing action clips on Instagram—starring his daughter!

He may play Thor on the big screen, but in real life, Hemsworth is more of a doting dad than the Norse god of thunder, lightning, storms, and strength. He shares daughter India Rose Hemsworth (born in 2012) and twins Sasha and Tristan (born in March 2014) with wife Elsa Pataky

The father of four recently shared a jaw-dropping dirt biking video of his 13-year-old daughter, writing, “Close call and wildly impressed more girl hung onto this landing! So proud.” India races over a hill, briefly flies into the air, and (as Hemsworth notes in his caption) totally sticks the landing. The proud papa looks into the camera as he blurts out, “Oh, my god!”

View this post on Instagram

In the next quick clip, Hemsworth says to the teen, “That was gnarly. Tell me what happened.” She replies, “I like jumped, and I thought I was okay, and I landed sideways, and I don’t know.” The actor adds, “It was like a bucking bronco, well done, good effort.” But the videos don’t end there.

Hemsworth shares another shot of India trying the jump again. And this time she lands perfectly, with her dad shouting, “Yes!”

Friends and fans took to Instagram, applauding India’s efforts with comments like, “I love this! Kids a beast” and “Nice save, India.”

While India gets all the (well-deserved) attention in the most recent clip, Hemsworth has also posted pics and videos of his other children on dirt bikes. Last April, the Thor star shared videos and photos of one of his twin sons, captioning the carousel, “Stoked for my boy competing in his first ever race, finishing 3rd in his class, proud moment.” In a heartwarming moment, Hemsworth picks up his kiddo for a superhero-sized hug, and…well, all we can say is, “Aww!”

View this post on Instagram

Of course, the Hemsworth clan doesn’t let their family adventures end on the race course. Hemsworth recently posted pics of himself and his children surfing. The celeb dad revealed, “Always a big dream of mine to be able to check the forecast, pack the bags, and chase some surf with them. I’ll never take it for granted.”

View this post on Instagram

And then there was the family’s snowboarding trip to Japan. Hemsworth, Pataky, and their brood hit the slopes for what looks like an adrenaline-fueled good time. Pro snowboarder Shaun White even weighed in on this post, commenting, “Love this! The kids are ripping.” And we agree!

Pedro Pascal Shares Candid Moment on Romance Movie Set With Rumored Beau

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:24pm

Pedro Pascal and Rafael Olarra were just spotted in Mexico again on the set of Pascal’s new gay romance film, De Noche, helmed by Oscar-nominated director Todd Haynes (Carol).

In an image obtained by TMZ and published earlier this month, the Mandalorian star is seen in full costume and makeup, sporting a gray vest, purple tie, black fedora, and black-rimmed rectangular specs. Behind him, Olarra can be seen, his hair wavy and relaxed and his outfit beige and casual.

De Noche is being filmed right now in Mexico, near where the duo were seen in March. According to Deadline, the film is a gay romance that was nearly shut down until the four-time Emmy nominee got involved. Pascal replaced Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, who reportedly exited the production after two weeks of no-shows.

As for Pascal and Olarra, the two were last seen in Mexico. Before that, they spent Valentine’s weekend in New York City and went for a PDA-packed stroll in Los Angeles

For his 51st birthday, Pascal celebrated with a not-so-subtle nod to Olarra. Posting a picture of what looked to be a pinata party, he tagged Olarra. Read more about that here.

Pascal is a notoriously private person when it comes to his personal life, rarely speaking to the public about who he’s dating. On the other hand, Olarra, 42, is an openly gay man who studied at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, per Queerty.

Olarra was last linked to actor/singer Luke Evans (Nine Perfect Strangers). The two went Instagram official in February 2020, per People, then announced their breakup in 2021 after a year together, per Out magazine.

1982 TV Show Ranked Among Sitcoms That Were ‘Canceled Way Too Soon’ Became a Cult Classic

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:21pm

With just six episodes, Police Squad! made a major impact despite its untimely cancellation.

The ABCsitcom earned a spot on TVLine’s list of 10 Phenomenal Sitcoms That Were Canceled Way Too Soon. The article points out that Police Squad! later inspired the Naked Gun films, noting, “A lot of the humor and charm from the subsequent movie adaptations prominently appear throughout the series.”

The outlet goes on to describe Police Squad! as “an incredibly short-lived sitcom that ultimately found success in a different medium,” getting “its happy ending on the big screen.”

Created by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker, the police procedural spoof starred Leslie Nielsen—the trio’s collaborator in the beloved 1980 movie Airplane!—as detective Frank Drebin and Alan North as Captain Ed Hocken. Peter Lupus (Norberg), Ed Williams (Ted Olson), William Duell (Johnny the Snitch) and Ronald “Tiny Ron” Taylor (Al) rounded out the cast.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

The Zucker brothers and Abrahams initially conceived the concept as a film. However, Police Squad! ultimately became a TV show after then-Paramount Pictures president Michael Eisner secured the trio a six-episode deal.

Police Squad! premiered in March 1982 as a mid-season replacement. After four episodes aired, the sitcom was removed from ABC’s schedule later that month, with the last two installments airing in the summer. Despite critical acclaim and Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Nielsen and the sitcom’s creators, ABC canceled the series.

In a 2006 interview for the show’s DVD release, Nielsen revealed that ABC entertainment president Tony Thomopoulos claimed Police Squad! was canceled because “the viewer had to watch it in order to appreciate it,” meaning the jokes required the undivided attention of viewers.

Although the show had a brief run, Police Squad! garnered a passionate cult following through cable reruns in the years after its cancellation.

“If Police Squad! had been made 20 years later, it would have been a smash,” Simpsons creator Matt Groening speculated in a 2010 interview with CBS Interactive. “It was before its time. In 1982 your average viewer was unable to cope with its pace, its quick-fire jokes. But these days they’d have no problems keeping up. I think we’ve proved that.”

In addition to the sitcom itself being discovered by new fans for years to come, Police Squad! served as the inspiration for the highly successful Naked Gun film series. The Zuckers and Abrahams revived Neilsen’s Frank Drebin for three movies: 1988’s The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, 1991’s The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear and 1994’s Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult. Williams and Taylor reprised their Police Squad! roles as Ted and Al in the films, while North and Lupus were recast with George Kennedy and O.J. Simpson as Ed and Nordberg, respectively.

Though Neilsen died from pneumonia in November 2010 at age 84, the Naked Gun franchise is still active today, with Liam Neeson portraying his character’s son, Frank Drebin Jr., in the 2025 movie The Naked Gun.

Psychologist Says the 1 Phrase That Instantly Shuts Down a Passive-Aggressive Person Isn’t What You Might Think

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:21pm

Growing up, many of us were conditioned not to be too aggressive, either physically or verbally. You likely had some school and house rules, such as "no hitting, kicking and biting." Name-calling and cursing may have also been off-limits. Yet, passive-aggressive behavior can sometimes fly under the radar, though it can feel so confusing and wrong when you are on the receiving end of it.

"Passive-aggressive means something is being said in a condescending manner that is intended to make someone feel less than or uncomfortable," says Dr. Brittany McGeehan, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and performance coach.

Passive-aggressive phrases can sound like, "No, really, it's fine" (when you are silently seething at someone for not doing what you hoped) or "Wow! Your hair actually looks good today!"

When you think about it, the term "passive-aggressive" honestly feels like a misnomer. The intent is rather aggressive, and it can often work. Passive-aggressive phrases are hurtful, sometimes even more so than direct and harsh ones.

"It’s harmful because there is always a deeper root that isn’t being addressed," Dr. McGeehan says. "Whether it’s related to the other person or an internal issue from the person making the comment, it’s always a way of displacing their own discomfort onto someone else."

If you're the one sitting in embarrassment or with bruised feelings, it's helpful to know how to disarm the person and situation. Dr. McGeehan shares a surprising phrase that instantly shuts down passive-aggressive people. Scroll on for her unexpected (but very satisfying) advice.

Why Do People Make Passive-Aggressive Comments?

Rudzhan Nagiev/Getty Images

Passive-aggressive comments don't typically earn someone any likability points, but people often have a reason for saying what they did.

"People make passive-aggressive comments when they are feeling resentment toward the speaker but haven’t addressed it directly," Dr. McGeehan shares.

She says that, often, people don't address their feelings directly because they have difficulty tolerating conflict or need to improve their communication skills.

"It’s a way of letting off some pressure without actually coming out and taking ownership of their perspective," she explains. "At the core, it’s also a lack of ability to regulate their nervous system during discomfort."

The 1 Surprising Phrase To Instantly Shut Down a Passive-Aggressive Person, According to a Psychologist

Dr. McGeehan's go-to phrase for instantly shutting down passive-aggressive people is: "What an interesting thing to feel comfortable saying out loud. I wonder what you were trying to say. Can you say it again and tell me what you meant?”

Honestly? Our jaws hit the floor at this mic drop of a phrase.

"Personally, I love this response in social settings because it places the ownership back on the speaker and forces them to repeat it again," the psychologist tells Parade. "It also keeps you in a place of curiosity and therefore not picking up their energy, almost like using an energy shield."

She would have no problem pulling this one out at a range of functions, from dinner parties to work meetings ("as long as I'm not speaking to my boss," she clarifies.).

"If there’s a hierarchy and the conversation is public, I probably wouldn’t recommend this phrase, as it may escalate the discomfort, and they could retaliate in private," she adds.

Related: Psychologists Warn: This Harmful Behavior Is Rooted in Insecurity

6 Other Ways To Disarm Someone Who's Passive-Aggressive 1. Just say, "OK"

That's it—seriously. Then, Dr. McGeehan suggests moving right along.

"If you can deliver in a deadpan intonation, bonus points," she adds. "One of the quickest ways to disarm someone who is passive-aggressive is to just agree and move on, knowing what they said is about them and not you."

Related: Psychologist Says if You Have These 8 Habits, You Are Highly Emotionally Mature

2. Ask, "What do you mean by that?"

Passive-aggressive people are generally naturally conflict-avoidant, but you don't have to play by their rules.

"Anytime you lean in to the conflict and seek to understand, they will become flustered and experience appropriate embarrassment and most likely apologize," Dr. McGeehan notes. "Either way, you’ve diffused the issue at hand."

3. Respond literally

This tactic for shutting down passive-aggressive people is a favorite of Dr. McGeehan's. For instance, let's pretend someone says to you, "Must be nice to go home early." She suggests you respond with something like, "It is nice, I planned my week that way. Let me know if you want help doing the same."

"While it can feel surprising, at face value, you’re agreeing with them and then extending support, all while not taking the bait," she shares.

4. Address the potential feelings

Dr. McGeehan says that you can also work to get to the heart of the issue by responding with something like, "Hey, something feels off. Is something wrong?"

"This interrupts the pattern by moving directly toward the issue at hand, while maintaining warmth," she notes.

Related: 12 Things Emotionally Intelligent Women Do That the Average Person Avoids, Psychologists Say

5. Show them the door

Dr. McGeehan has also given people a chance to leave gracefully with honest statements that leave the ball in their court. Think, "If this doesn’t work for you, I’m happy for you to be honest with me and say that."

"By giving them an easy exit to be honest, you’re helping them say no, or disagree, which is at the root of many passive-aggressive comments," she explains. "When you normalize directness, especially with warmth, you reduce the need for indirect avoidance."

6. Know when to give up

These strategies may fall short. It's not your fault if that happens, but Dr. McGeehan says sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is to quit before you fall too far behind.

"I usually give up trying to disarm a passive-aggressive person if they double down on what they said, without pause, and get even puffier," she states. "This kind of behavior speaks to someone who is very dysregulated and unhealthy, and at that point, I would exit the conversation with an 'Oh, OK, I hear you,' because you aren’t agreeing, but you are ending the conversation."

Final Takeaways

Passive-aggressive behavior and phrases are indirectly hostile toward someone else. Sarcasm and back-handed compliments ("Oh, you actually did a good job on that report") are among passive-aggressive behaviors. You'll want to know how to shut them down. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • Passive-aggressive behavior harms. When you're on the receiving end of a passive-aggressive comment or behavior, you may feel confused, hurt or resentful. Knowing how to disarm passive-aggressive types can help you regain agency and directly address conflict.
  • Try this key phrase when responding to passive-aggressive comments. Dr. McGeehan suggests saying, "What an interesting thing to feel comfortable saying out loud. I wonder what you were trying to say. Can you say it again and tell me what you meant?” It lets you take back power, leans into curiosity and shows a refusal to absorb the person's wonky energy.
  • Other strategies can also help disarm passive-aggressive people. Try saying "OK" and moving on, or directly addressing the conflict. Sometimes, someone will double down, and the best thing you can do for your peace of mind is to exit the conversation.

1968 Hit by Country Queen Was Written After She 'Broke' Her Husband's Heart

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:11pm

There's no question that Dolly Parton is one of the most beloved singers in country music history, and with good reason. Not only is she an amazingly talented musician, she's a ridiculously cool person, too, and she's been finding ways to empower women for over half a century.

All the way back in the '60s, for example, Parton wrote a hit song inspired by an argument she had with her husband as a newlywed. As she told Rolling Stone in a 2003 interview, Parton's husband, Carl Dean, had a very sexist reaction when he discovered he wasn't the first person she ever slept with.

“That song was based on a true story,” she said. “My husband doesn’t particularly like for me to tell this, but he’s old enough now, so he don’t really give a big s—t.”

"See, I had had sex before we met, but I hadn’t mentioned it, and he hadn’t asked," Parton explained. "We were married for eight months, happy as we could be, and all of a sudden he decides to ask. I told him the truth, and it broke his heart. He could not get over that for the longest time. I thought, ‘Well, my goodness, what’s the big damn deal?'”

Released as the title track on Parton's 1968 album, Just Because I'm a Woman, the song's lyrics are a call for equality:

“I can see you’re disappointed by the way you look at me / And I’m sorry that I’m not the woman you thought I’d be / Yes, I’ve made mistakes, but listen and understand / My mistakes are no worse than yours just because I’m a woman"

At the time, the song's sentiment was such a radical sentiment that some radio stations in the U.S. actually refused to play it, though it did go to #1 in South Africa.

"I had a lot of fans in South Africa!” Parton said. “All those oppressed women! I found that so amusing, because somebody said, ‘Hey, my mistakes are no worse than yours, just because I’m a woman.'”

Years later, Parton ran into similar problems with 1991's “The Eagle When She Flies.”

“Lots of DJs wouldn’t play ‘The Eagle When She Flies,’ because they thought it was such a women’s-lib song,” she recalled.

Thankfully, Parton has never listened to her haters...and never will.

Packing for a spring or summer trip tends to follow the same pattern. You start off organized, but somewhere between the “just in case” jackets and dresses for dinner, your suitcase fills up fast. And then come the shoes, which are always the hardest to narrow down. You want something comfortable enough for long walks, versatile enough to match multiple outfits, and compact enough that it doesn’t take up half your bag.

That’s why finding one reliable pair you can wear on repeat makes all the difference. Instead of packing multiple options, the goal is to bring something that can handle everything on your itinerary, from sightseeing during the day to dressier dinners at night. The Clarks Breeze Coral Sandals at Amazon fit that role perfectly. Now as low as $34, down 43% from $60 when you clip the coupon on the product page, they combine all-day comfort with an easy, polished look that works across settings, so you can pack lighter without feeling limited.

These sandals keep things simple but not basic, reworking a classic thong silhouette with a few thoughtful updates. Four slim straps on either side meet at the toe post and come together in a woven, medallion-style knot, where multiple tones are braided together to create contrast and dimension. It brings in a bit of variation through the weave, so it doesn’t feel flat or one-note. The overall shape is clean and streamlined with a slightly sporty edge, while the subtle 1.25-inch platform adds just enough lift to feel noticeable without affecting how easy they are to walk in.

Style-wise, they hold their own — but comfort isn’t an afterthought. The brand’s signature cushion soft foam insole adds a plush, supportive layer that feels comfortable right away, with no break-in time needed. On the bottom, a lightweight, flexible sole with added traction moves easily with your step and can handle a variety of terrains without feeling stiff or clunky.

Sizing runs from women’s 5 through 12, making it easy to find a comfortable, true-to-size fit. The sandals come in two colorways: A softer mix of blush, rose gold, and white, and a more classic black and gunmetal silver option. Both feel versatile in their own way — the lighter pair leans more seasonal, while the darker one works as an everyday neutral. Pricing stays accessible, too, with the former option at $34 and the latter at $36, so either way, you’re getting a great deal.

While the majority of shoppers were impressed by how “supportive,” “super comfortable,” and “stylish” they are, globetrotters in particular called the sandals “perfect for travel.” One shopper wrote, “The cushioning is amazing — perfect for all-day wear. They fit true to size, feel lightweight, and have great arch support.”

That same reviewer also highlighted the “simple yet classic design,” adding that “they go with everything from casual outfits to beachwear.”

This Limited-Time Trader Joe's Tart Feels Like Something You'd Order at Brunch

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:05pm

There's something about a savory tart that feels a little elevated. It has the buttery, flaky appeal of a pastry, but with rich, savory fillings that make it feel like a proper meal. It's something you'd expect to order at a café alongside a latte—not pull out of your fridge on a random weekday.

That's exactly the vibe of Trader Joe's latest limited-time find. The Spring Vegetable Tart ($9.99 for 16 ounces) feels fancier than it is, with a mix of roasted vegetables, creamy sauce and a crisp pastry shell that comes together in under 15 minutes. Whether you're hosting brunch or just trying to make lunch feel less routine, this one makes a strong case for stocking up while you can.

This New Trader Joe's Tart Is Basically Spring in Every Bite Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's Spring Vegetable Tart is a seasonal refrigerated item that includes everything people love about spring produce. Each 16-ounce tart is packed with a mix of roasted asparagus, artichokes, golden beets and carrots, along with caramelized onions layered over a creamy goat cheese béchamel-style sauce.

All of that sits inside a flaky, buttery crust that crisps up in the oven in about 15 minutes. The combination hits that sweet spot between rich and fresh, with the tangy goat cheese balancing out the roasted vegetables.

It's designed to serve four, making it an easy option for brunch, lunch or even a light dinner. At $9.99, it also falls in that classic Trader Joe's zone—feels a little elevated, but still affordable enough to grab without overthinking it.

The Easiest Way to Pull Off a Fancy Brunch at Home

Part of what makes this tart stand out is how easy it is to dress up—or not. You can serve it straight out of the oven as a main dish, or slice it into smaller portions for a more brunch-style spread.

A simple salad on the side goes a long way here, especially something bright and acidic to balance the richness of the crust and cheese. Think lemon vinaigrette, arugula or even one of Trader Joe's pre-made salad kits if you're keeping things uncomplicated.

As for drinks, this pairs best with classic brunch sips. Coffee and tea work, but it also pairs well with something sparkling or citrus-forward if you're going for a more weekend feel. And if you want to take it up a notch, one Reddit user suggested adding a little extra flair: "A drizzle of TJ's Balsamic Glaze would probably kick it up a notch."

Everyone Wants a Taste of This Spring Tart View this post on Instagram

Since this is a limited-time item, availability has been a bit of a moving target—and shoppers have definitely noticed. Over on Reddit, some users say it's only showing up in select regions, with one person noting it's "a new regional item only available on the west coast."

Others have had trouble finding it altogether. "Not in Torrance 😭," one Reddit commenter wrote, while another commenter on Instagram added, "I didn't see it my store in DC," showing just how inconsistent the rollout seems to be.

As for taste, the reviews are mixed but mainly positive. One Redditor who tried it said, "I just tried it today. It was ok—I like the butternut squash one a little more." "There wasn't quite enough on it," they added.

Still, most shoppers want to try it first-hand. Plenty of shoppers are eager to try it if they can find it, with comments like "Try for sure" and "I'm going to look for this!" popping up across social media.

If you come across it, don't overthink it—just toss it in your cart. This limited-time find won't stick around for long.

Five Below's New Washable Rug Is the $7 Hit of Dopamine Decor Your Space Will Love

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 7:05pm

I didn't totally get the whole "dopamine decor" thing at first. It sounded a little buzzwordy. Like something I'd scroll past and think, "Okay, but what does that actually mean in real life?" But then I started noticing the spaces that made me weirdly happy, like a bold rug, a pop of color, something a little unexpected—and suddenly it clicked. Oh. That's the point.

Dopamine decor is basically decorating your space in a way that sparks joy at first sight. Not in a minimalist, perfectly curated museum-like way, but in a "this makes me smile every time I walk by it" kind of way. Usually that means bright colors, playful patterns and quirky pieces—anything that feels personal and a little bit fun. It's about surrounding yourself with things that boost your mood, even in small doses. That's actually something I've been doing all along.

Washable Rug, $7 at Five Below

Five Below

Life is chaotic enough. Why not make your space feel like a tiny serotonin factory? If that means leaning into something bold or a little wild, I say go for it, which is exactly why this washable rug at Five Below caught my eye.

This is one of those Five Below finds you kind of have to act fast on. It's new, and if you didn't notice the product name before, it's washable, which is a dream in and of itself. Plus, the neutral cheetah print gives it a fun vibe without totally overwhelming your space.

The size is 24 by 36 inches, making it perfect for smaller spots like entryways, bedside areas or even a bathroom that needs a little personality boost.

Basically, it's an easy, low-commitment way to make your space feel a little more styled—just don't wait too long, because this feels like one of those things that disappears the second people catch on. (I'm still sad I missed out on that retro Sims T-shirt.)

If you're going to be at Five Below for this washable rug anyway, let me clue you in on a couple of other things you may want to check out while you're there. Namely, these cute flower-shaped drinking glasses that scream spring, and the daintiest little serving tray around. They both fall under the "blink and you'll miss them" Five Below finds, so head to the store soon.

How Much Was a Coke From McDonald's When It Opened in April 1955?

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 6:45pm

It's hard to name an American icon more recognizable than McDonald's. You can spot the logo from miles away; those crispy golden fries are practically embedded into our taste buds, and when you need a cheap meal fast, they've always got you covered. Whether you're craving a burger and fries, those tasty nuggets dipped in sauce, or you're just stress-testing whether the ice cream machine is actually working today, we can count on Mickey D's to be a beacon of shining golden arches no matter the occasion.

But despite its enduring status as the brand that helped create the fast-food industry as we know it today, McDonald's has consistently sought to keep value at the forefront. In a sea of $14 burgers with fries sold separately, Mickey D's is all about making sure you get your money's worth, even if it's not as cheap as it used to be. With that in mind, let's take a stroll down memory lane and look at McDonald's in its early days to see how much something as simple as a Coke would've cost in 1955 compared to today. Fair warning, the price jump is drastic.

When Did McDonald's Open Its First Restaurant?

The first McDonald's location was opened on May 15, 1940, by brothers Ray and Maurice McDonald. After failing to make it in Hollywood, the duo decided to pivot to the food business, and the rest, as they say, is history. What began as a humble barbecue carhop slinging out 15-cent burgers went on to become one of the most recognizable restaurant brands ever. Beyond just focusing on the food, though, the brothers made a point of considering that customers would appreciate getting their food fast and set about creating the "Speedee Service System" that would revolutionize the entire industry.

Where Was McDonald's First Restaurant?

Michael Gordon / Shutterstock.com

This is where the McDonald's story often gets confused. The first McDonald's location was at 1398 North E St., San Bernardino, Calif., and it now operates as a free McDonald's museum. Despite that fact, some people mistakenly believe that the first location opened in Des Plaines, Ill., on April 15, 1955. The reason for the mix-up can be traced back to milkshake mixer salesman-turned-business mogul, Ray Kroc. According to the lore, Kroc was so taken by the McDonald's concept that he decided to become a franchise agent for the brand, helping to secure deals that would solidify Mickey D's future as an American icon.

The enterprising salesman eventually bought the brothers out of the business entirely in 1961 for $2.7 million, which, adjusted for inflation, would be around $30 million today. As part of the deal, the McDonald brothers kept the original San Bernardino location, but because Kroc owned the rights to the McDonald's name, they had to rename it The Big M. Ray then opened a McDonald's location nearby, effectively forcing them to shut down.

How Much Was a Soft Drink at McDonald's in 1955?

If you've been to McDonald's at all in recent years, then you're well aware that prices aren't the same as they used to be—especially not in 1955. Back then, you could get a seven-ounce soft drink from McDonald's for a meager 10 cents. Yep, you read that right. For the low cost of just a dime, you could get a Coke, Orangeade, root beer, milk or coffee. You could also upgrade to a milkshake for an additional 10 cents. In today's money, that would equate to roughly $1.23 for a soft drink or about $2.46 for a milkshake.

How Much Was a Meal at McDonald's in 1955?

lightman_pic / Shutterstock.com

Although you're probably still reeling over the soft drink prices, the price of a full meal at McDonald's in 1955 might throw you for an even bigger loop. Considering the prices of the restaurant at the time, you could get a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink for just about 39 cents. You quite literally won't find a deal like that anywhere today. Translated into today's prices, that would be about $4.81.

On the bright side, McDonald's recently brought back its $5 meal deal, which gets you either a McChicken, McDouble, or four-piece nuggets, a small fry and a small drink. Not exactly 1955 prices, but we'll take it.

How Much Is a Soft Drink at McDonald's in 2026?

If you've made it this far, we'd like to reiterate the earlier warning that the price jump might stun you. Ready? Here it goes. A soft drink at McDonald's today can cost anywhere between $1.19 to $3.19, depending on the size you get. To put that into perspective, on the low end, $1.19 would have been approximately $14.66 in 1955, which could've bought anywhere between 20 and 30 McDonald's meals at the time. Talk about a major increase.

In the ever-prevalent words of DJ Khaled, "Yesterday's price is not today's price." At least he wasn't wrong. Unfortunately, the days of getting a meal for less than $1 are long gone, but McDonald's is still one of the cheaper fast-food chains. And honestly, with prices so all over the place these days, we'll take what we can get.

"We're laughing about things the moment they happen," Sprouse, 33, added. "You got to have levity in life. Thankfully, no one was hurt and there was no more violence than what happened. So, it's all OK."

The actor claimed he wanted to make a video joking about his karate skills. Palvin talked him out of it.

TMZ reported that Palvin called 911 to report an attempted burglary. Sprouse reportedly pulled out his gun at the trespasser so he could tackle him. The Suite Life of Zack & Codystar put the gun back into a holster, according to officers. The unidentified man was arrested for outstanding warrants.

1987 Hit Film Was Just Ranked the 'Greatest Romantasy Movie' of All Time

Mon, 04/20/2026 - 6:24pm

Romantasy has become increasingly popular in the world of cinema, and it shouldn't come as a surprise. After all, fantasy stories with plenty of romantic moments usually make for an incredible movie experience.

The publicationColliderrecently released a list of the "10 greatest romantasy movies of all time." The ranking, published on April 10, featured swoon-worthy fantasy films, like 2007's Stardust, The Shape of Water from 2017, Shrek from 2001, and 1990's Edward Scissorhands.

Rob Reiner's 1987 epic The Princess Bride, starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright as the iconic couple Westley and Princess Buttercup, was deemed by Collider as the greatest romantasy film ever made.

The Princess Bride has a score of 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed a total of $31,046,458 worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.

Rob Reiner Discussed How the 'Princess Bride' Movie Ended up Getting Made

In a 2004 interview with The Television Academy Foundation, Reiner, who died in December 2025 at the age of 78, shared how he was able to adapt William Goldman's 1973 novel, The Princess Bride.

Reiner said that while he was finishing up production of his 1985 film, The Sure Thing, he decided that he wanted to take a shot at making a Princess Bride movie. According to Reiner, he had been a long-time fan of the novel and Goldman's other works.

"I love that book and I went and read it again, I said, 'Wow it's still fabulous.' It is just the hippest smartest funniest book ever. And it combined all these sensibilities, you know, satire and adventure and romance," said Reiner in the interview.

After finding out that other directors had already tried to adapt the 1973 fantasy novel, Reiner requested to meet with Goldman. According to Reiner, Goldman, who died in 2018, agreed to "take a meeting" with him after watching his 1984 mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap, and a "rough cut" of The Sure Thing.

During the meeting, held at Goldman's apartment, Reiner told the author "what [he] felt was the essence of his book" and "what [he] thought should be done for the film." Reiner said Goldman was delighted by their conversation and agreed to let him make a Princess Bride movie.

Reiner also said that while the film received "great reviews," it wasn't a box office hit. He then clarified that he's well aware that the film eventually became quite beloved.

"It did okay at the box office but it didn't do what I felt it should have done. And again it's one of those movies that's gained in status over the years," said the late director in the 2004 interview.
