1970 No. 1 Hit Medley Became a Timeless Classic Rock Anthem
Fifty-five years ago, the Guess Who topped the charts with a song medley that would become one of their signature hits. The song, “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,” appeared on the Canadian rock band's breakthrough album American Woman. It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 9, 1970, remaining there for three weeks, and became a classic rock anthem. The two-part hit was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.
The first part of the song originally appeared as the B-side to the song “American Woman.”
“Out comes ‘American Woman,’ the longest song to ever be number one at the time,” Guess Who founding member Randy Bachman told Best Classic Bands in an interview. “The other side, ‘No Sugar Tonight,’ which I wrote alone, was the shortest.”
Bachman wrote “No Sugar Tonight” after he witnessed a couple arguing on a street in San Francisco.
“She slams the door, and she then says, ‘Baby, when you get home, you ain't getting no sugar tonight,’” Bachman told Goldmine magazine in 2024 . “And I go, ‘Wow, that one thing says it all.’ And I went and wrote this song. It was kind of racy when I wrote it because you know what it means. I had to clean it up. “
‘No Sugar Tonight’ was paired with a second song to make a singleClocking in at just over two minutes, “No Sugar Tonight” was too short to be a single on its own. It was paired with fellow Guess Who band member Burton Cummings’ “New Mother Nature” and was released as a separate single in March 1970.
“We put it together with 'New Mother Nature’ because it’s only really half a song ... [it] was very short,” Bachman told Goldmine. “And we wanted to do what The Beatles did with ‘A Day in the Life.’ Put my song, then Burton's song, and then back to back.”
In a 2023 interview on the Professor of Rock podcast, Bachman explained the songwriting process. “When Burton and I would get together, we'd play each other a song, and I would see that he would like the beginning of my song or the hook, but the rest bored him,” he shared. “Then he'd play me a song, and we would take the parts that really excited each other and put them together.”
“Well, we each had written a song, and it was very weird because we're trying something different,” Bachman continued. “I said, ‘Let's put the two songs together, you know, you don't need to write a middle eight for mine, I don't need to write a hook for yours, let's put them together, we'll have our own ‘Day in the Life.’ So we start with ‘No Sugar,’ then ‘New Mother Nature.’ I said, ‘Then guess what, ‘in the end they could overlap each other.’”
“It was really fun, and it ended up being like a cool suite of putting two songs together,” Bachman added.

Bachman left the Guess Who at the height of the band’s fame in 1970, while Cummings left in 1975 to pursue a solo career. The two recently reunited for a reunion tour.
As part of his solo act, Cummings had a cheeky introduction for the Guess Who medley. During a 2025 show in New Jersey, he told the audience, “This next song reminds me of the old Doublemint gum commercial because it’s ‘Two, two, two songs in one.” He then went into the “No Sugar Tonight" and “New Mother Nature" medley, according to New Jersey Stage.

Disneyland Paris Says Its Upcoming Lion King Ride Will Be 'One of Its Biggest'
If you thought the opening of the World of Frozen was the peak of the Disneyland Paris transformation, think again. Disney has shared details for its upcoming Lion King water attraction, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious builds in the park's history. Already under construction since fall 2025 at the newly renamed Disney Adventure World, this experience will be the first-ever immersive land entirely dedicated to Simba’s journey.
Related: Disneyland Paris’ New ‘Up’ Ride Has a Name—and It’s a Love Letter to Adventure
View this post on Instagram The Main Event: A 52-Foot PlungeThe biggest win for thrill-seekers is the attraction’s physical scale. Guests will board boats and journey into the caves beneath a massive, 120-foot-high Pride Rock. The ride will feature three distinct slopes, culminating in an impressive 52-foot-high descent. It’s a significant addition to the park’s thrill portfolio, combining the emotional storytelling of the 1994 animated masterpiece with the adrenaline of a world-class water flume.

A "Circle of Life" Tech UpgradeThis won't be a simple "book-on-report" ride. Disney is utilizing state-of-the-art Audio-Animatronics and special effects to bring the Pride Lands to life. Guests will move through iconic musical sequences from the film, coming face-to-face with Simba, Nala and the rest of the Animal Kingdom in a way that feels immersive rather than just observational.
The attraction serves as the anchor for a brand-new "land" that includes themed dining, shopping and character meet-and-greets. It’s a massive piece of the creative vision that is effectively doubling the park’s footprint and reimagining nearly 90% of its current offerings.
The Transformation TimelineWhile the World of Frozen just opened as of March, the Lion King area represents the "next chapter" of the park's evolution. Following the recent news of the Wilderness Explorers Sky Swings (the Up-themed family attraction), the Pride Lands addition proves that Disney is leaning heavily into "Adventure" as the primary theme for its second gate.
The Take: For Disney fans, the move to Pride Rock is a long-overdue spotlight for a franchise that has dominated Broadway and the box office for decades but has lacked a dedicated "e-ticket" ride. By combining a 52-foot drop with Broadway-level tech, Disneyland Paris is ensuring that this won't just be a ride for kids—it will become the new "must-do" for every traveler heading to Europe.

Top-Selling Author Forced to Miss Book Fair for Legal Reasons
A beloved children’s writer missed one of the biggest moments of his career after being stopped from boarding a flight due to a passport issue, yet the day still ended with unexpected good news.
Michael Rosen, the famous author behind the classic We're Going on a Bear Hunt, was set to attend the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy. The 79-year-old writer had been shortlisted for the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award, one of the highest honors in children’s literature.
But instead of arriving at the event, Rosen was turned away at the airport gate due to a technical rule involving his passport.

According to The Independent, Rosen left his home early in the morning, traveled to Stansted Airport, and went through check-in and security without problems. The issue only appeared when he reached the boarding gate.
He explained what happened: “I go through the check-in and I go through security and I go through all that, finally get to the gate and present my passport and ticket.”
Airport staff checked his passport and found that it did not meet European Union travel rules for UK citizens. While his passport was still valid until 2026, it had been issued more than 10 years before his travel date, making it ineligible for entry under post-Brexit regulations.
The rule requires that passports must be issued less than 10 years before the date of entry, even if the expiry date is still valid.
Rosen admitted the mistake but explained why it happened: “You can tap me on the wrist, and say, ‘you fool Rosen – you should have read the regs’.”
“Well, there’s a simple reason for that: because I was a guest, I didn’t see any travel documents. They just sent me a ticket which I then popped into my wallet on my phone,” he added.
Event organizers had arranged his trip but were unaware of the unusual passport issue affecting some UK travelers.
Although he missed the event, Rosen’s day took a surprising turn when he received a phone call after returning home.
“There is a happy ending to this story,” he said. “I came home and one of the first calls that came in was an Italian lady telling me that I had won the Hans Christian Andersen Award.”
The award recognizes a lifetime of achievement in children’s literature, making it a major milestone in Rosen’s long career. He has written more than 200 books and is widely respected as a storyteller, poet, and educator.
Still, he admitted feeling a bit disappointed about missing the moment in person.
Ha! I’ve just been refused entry onto a plane from Stansted to Bologna because my passport issue date is March 2016. The expiry date is August 2026 but the rule is 10 years from issue date. Another Brexit benefit. Apparently. Go home now.
— Michael Rosen 💙💙🎓🎓 NICE 爷爷 (@MichaelRosenYes) April 13, 2026“I’m a little bit sad that I wasn’t at the announcement, to bask in the glory and all that,” he shared. “But I’ve had a happy day basking in that glory.”
Rosen also noted that because the trip was arranged for him, he did not lose money from the incident.
“If I had paid for the ticket… I would have been a little bit more miffed, but, as you can see, I’m still smiling.”
1988 Hit Single Defined the Hair Metal Craze When It Released 38 Years Ago Today
On this day in music history, Def Leppard released one of the classic '80s track that would help shape the hair metal era.
Exactly 38 years ago, the English rock band released on of the biggest singles of their career: "Pour Some Sugar On Me." Having already been included on their smash hit album Hysteria in 1987, the song took on a new life when it was officially released as a single on April 16, 1988.
"Pour Some Sugar On Me" would end up debuting on Billboard's Hot 100 just one week after its release and later climbed its way up to the No. 2 position, peaked in July 1988. It is one of Def Leppard's highest-charting singles on the Hot 100, behind the band's only No. 1 hit, "Love Bites."
"Pour Some Sugar On Me" spent a total of 24 weeks on the Hot 100, which is the longest run of any Def Leppard single on that chart.
It's been ranked on a number of music roundups, including VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s, with the classic Def Leppard track landing at No. 2 on that list, behind only Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer."
View this post on InstagramEven though "Pour Some Sugar On Me" ended up being a massive success for Def Leppard, the band has previously admitted that the song almost didn't even make the album.
Lead singer Joe Elliot previously told New Zealand outlet Stuff.co.nzthat the band was just about done recording their fourth studio album Hysteria when he was fiddling around on the guitar, playing the chorus of "Pour Some Sugar On Me." When producer Robert Lange walked into the room, he knew the band had to record it, but Elliot was hesitant.
"We had been working on this album for two and a half years, they're not going to want to hear - 'hey we've got a new song,'" he recalled. "He suggested we get it as far as we could before they came back, so we stopped working on whatever we were doing and put a fresh piece of tape on the machine and literally built this song up from scratch."
A few days later, "We played the guys what we had," Elliot said. "The smiles broke out after about 45 seconds, luckily."
1980 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Dark Breakup Anthem
Released in 1980, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division remains one of the most haunting songs ever written about a relationship falling apart.
Rather than dramatizing a breakup, the track captures something more unsettling—the slow unraveling of two people who are still together but already emotionally distant. Lines about routine, resentment and a “bedroom so cold” paint a picture of love quietly eroding from the inside.
That emotional weight was drawn from real life. Frontman Ian Curtis wrote the lyrics during a period of personal turmoil, including the breakdown of his marriage and ongoing health struggles. The song was released just weeks after his death by suicide, adding an even deeper layer of meaning to its now-iconic chorus. Curtis died on May 18, 1980 at the age of just 23.
The track became Joy Division’s biggest hit, reaching No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart and eventually earning widespread recognition as one of the defining songs of its era. Over time, its legacy has only grown.
In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked “Love Will Tear Us Apart” among the 500 greatest songs of all time, placing it at No. 41 and writing that it "still hits like an ice pick aimed at your soul." The song has also topped major lists from outlets like NME, which once named it the greatest single ever released.
Part of what makes the song endure is its stark honesty. There’s no resolution, no sense of closure—just the recognition that something once meaningful is no longer working, even if neither person knows how to fix it.
The title itself carries an added layer of irony. Curtis reportedly came up with “Love Will Tear Us Apart” as a sardonic response to “Love Will Keep Us Together,” the upbeat 1975 hit by Captain & Tennille. In a fitting twist, Joy Division even recorded the track in the same studio where that earlier song had been made, underscoring the stark contrast between the two visions of love.
“Love Will Tear Us Apart” captures the quiet moment when a relationship has already slipped beyond repair, even if neither person has fully said it out loud.
More than four decades later, the track still resonates, giving listeners a stark portrait of love’s unraveling and the complicated emotions that come with it.
Quote of the Day by Sophia Loren: 'When You Learn To Tap This Source, You Will Have Defeated Age'
On Sept. 20, 1934, Sofia Villani Scicolone was born in Rome, Italy. And before Sophia Loren became an Oscar-winning actress who stunned the world with her talent and beauty, she was a shy little girl facing extreme poverty in Italy during World War II. "Hunger was the major theme of my childhood," she wrote in her memoir Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: My Life. After being abandoned by her father, she shared a single bedroom with eight of her family members. Sophia also survived bombings—one of which left a shrapnel scar on her chin.
But even on the worst days, she never lost hope. At 15, she entered the Miss Italia beauty pageant and won the title of Miss Elegance. It's also where she caught the eye of film producer Carlo Ponti, who would become her mentor, manager and future husband. Sophia signed with Paramount Pictures and became a bona fide screen icon, starring alongside Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando in major films. In 1962, Sophia became the first person in history to win an Oscar for a non-English-language performance for her role in 1961's Two Women. Now 91, Sophia has appeared in more than 100 films and her story of resilience is why she's today's quote of the day.
Quote of the Day by Sophia LorenCanvaPro/Parade
"There is a fountain of youth: It is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age."
Let's be real: Society is constantly telling women that we need to look young forever—whether it's through cosmetic procedures, expensive creams or fad diets. And that's why this quote is so refreshing. Because her biggest beauty and anti-aging secret doesn't have a price tag. It's not about a fancy moisturizer or new diet—it's about something only you have and it comes from the inside. Tap into your intelligence and creativity and pour it into everything you do and share it with the people you love. That's how to stay young.
Related: Quote of the Day: Audrey Hepburn’s Life Advice is Just Like Her—Timeless
Deeper Meaning of Sophia Loren's Quote: Inner BeautyAnother reason why I love this quote is because of the person who's saying it. Sophia Loren is absolutely stunning and one of the most beautiful women to ever grace our screens. She could have totally coasted on her looks alone—but she didn't—and she doesn't think anyone else should either. Because it's our minds, hearts and creativity that make us beautiful. And when we tap into that, we become ageless.

Her quote becomes even more powerful when you think about the adversity Sophia Loren overcame to get to where she is today. It makes you realize that she didn't become a global superstar because of her cheekbones or smile, but because of her resilience, work ethic, talent—and refusal to let a painful past define her future.
The real fountain of youth isn't something you buy; it's something you build when you embrace the unique qualities that make you, you. Your personality, your talents and the love you show yourself and share with family and friends is the key to feeling young forever.

- "Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life."
- "If you haven't cried, your eyes can't be beautiful."
- "It's better to explore life and make mistakes than to play it safe and not to explore at all."
- "I've never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don't understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now."

Best-Selling Author’s Novel Named Among ‘Best Reviewed Books of the Week’
A new book by best-selling author Patrick Radden Keefe is gaining strong attention after being named one of the “Best Reviewed Books of the Week” by BookTrib.
The recognition highlights London Falling, a gripping nonfiction story that explores a mysterious death, hidden identities and the darker side of modern London.
Keefe, known for his deeply reported books like Say Nothing and Empire of Pain, brings readers into a real-life case that feels like a thriller. His latest work follows the tragic story of 19-year-old Zac Brettler, whose secret double life shocked even those closest to him.
London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a Family’s Search for Truth tells the story of a young man who lived two very different lives.
WATCH WHAT HAPPENS LIVE WITH ANDY COHEN -- Episode 19129 -- Pictured: Patrick Radden Keefe -- (Photo by: Charles Sykes/Bravo via Getty Images)In November 2019, surveillance cameras near MI6 headquarters captured Zac Brettler pacing on a balcony of a luxury building along the River Thames. At 2:24 a.m., he jumped into the river. Days later, police confirmed his death to his family.
At first, the case seemed like a possible suicide. But as his parents searched for answers, they discovered something unexpected: Zac had been living under a false identity.
He had been pretending to be “Zac Ismailov,” the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. Under this fake persona, he moved in elite social circles, wore designer clothes and chased a life filled with luxury and power.
Keefe explains how this transformation began when Zac was still a teenager. Surrounded by wealthy classmates, he became fascinated by extreme wealth and status. Over time, that fascination grew into a full double life.
“It’s about this kid Zac Brettler… who ends up, unbeknownst to his parents, adopting this alter ego,” Keefe said in an interview.
The deeper Zac went into this world, the more dangerous it became. He eventually got mixed up with questionable figures, including a businessman and a known gangster. This led his parents to question whether his death was really what it seemed.
At the heart of London Falling is a grieving family trying to understand what happened to their son.
Zac’s parents, Rachelle and Matthew Brettler, did not believe he was suicidal. As they looked closer, they found clues that pointed to something more troubling. They began their own investigation when they felt authorities were not giving clear answers.
The book also paints a wider picture of London itself. Keefe shows a city filled with wealth, but also hidden dangers. He compares it to places affected by crime and corruption, where truth can be hard to find.
“There’s a ubiquity of luxury consumer goods,” he noted, pointing out how the culture of wealth has changed the city.
Critics have responded strongly to London Falling, calling it both suspenseful and deeply emotional. The book combines investigative reporting with storytelling that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.
It also stands out for its focus on real human struggles: grief, identity and the need to belong. Keefe explores why people lie and how those lies can grow over time.
“Sometimes you get trapped in it,” Keefe said when discussing the nature of lying.
The book does not offer easy answers. Instead, it presents a complex case where the truth may never be fully known. This open-ended approach has made it especially powerful for readers and critics alike.

When we think of horror movies, children's movies may not be the first ones that come to mind — unless, of course, we're talking about Coraline.
The 2009 animated film, which is rated PG for its dark themes and visuals, sits somewhere between a children's Halloween movie and a straight-up horror flick, and apparently, it's one of the top fan-favorited films for the movie junkies that love a good spine-tingling scare.
According to Letterboxd, Coraline is ranked at No. 1 on their list of the Top 250 Horror Films with the Most Fans. (Letterboxd defines fans as members with a particular film as one of their four favorites on their profile.) The stop-motion animated film outranks some of the most iconic and grotesque horror movies in history, like The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, Psycho — even The Exorcist.
View this post on InstagramBut the list is not to be confused with Letterboxd's Top 250 Horror Films, which simply ranks movies in the horror genre by their average member rating. (Coraline is ranked #15 on that list.) It only holds the No. 1 position on the "Most Fans" list, which counts the number of Letterboxd users who have given Coraline a spot in the "favorites" section on their profile. (Users are limited to four movies to be displayed as their "favorites.")
Fans who love Coraline seem to really love Coraline, as it is "favorited" more than any other horror film on the platform. But it even ranks highly on Letterboxd outside of just the horror genre, as it's placed at No. 37 on the platform's Top 250 Animated Films list. (Parade has it ranked at No. 41 on our list of the 53 Best Animated Movies of All Time.)
The 2009 movie from Laika Studios was directed by Henry Selick, the same filmmaker behind similar dark animated films like James and the Giant Peach (1996) and Disney's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Coraline was based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 dark fantasy novella of the same name.

1977 Hit Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’
In 1977, a romantic comedy arrived that would go on to become one of the most celebrated films in cinematic history.
Annie Hall has now been ranked among Rotten Tomatoes' list of the "300 Best Movies of All Time," adding another major honor to a film that has remained a favorite with critics and audiences for decades. The movie also holds a 97% critics score on the site, reflecting the lasting respect it continues to earn.
Directed by Woody Allen and starring Allen alongside Diane Keaton, Annie Hall follows comedian Alvy Singer as he reflects on his relationship with the free-spirited Annie Hall. Its mix of humor, romance and introspection helped set it apart from more conventional comedies of its era, giving the film a voice and structure that still feel distinctive today.
Allen later spoke about his approach to filmmaking in a 1987 interview with Rolling Stone, emphasizing the creative passion that defined his work. "I'm trying to make as wonderful a film as I can," he said. "I enjoy the writing most… [the movie] always seems great in the writing."
The film was also a major success during awards season. At the 50th Academy Awards, Annie Hall won Best Picture, while also earning Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Keaton.
Its influence has only grown with time. The American Film Institute ranked it No. 4 on its list of the funniest American films ever made, highlighting one of its greatest qualities that has made it so beloved and timeless.
The movie also connected with audiences when it first arrived. Made on a $4 million budget, it earned more than $38.3 million worldwide, showing the immediate and powerful impact it had on viewers in its era.
Nearly fifty years after its release, Annie Hall is still being recognized among the greatest films ever made. Its latest ranking is another reminder of how strongly it continues to resonate and why it remains such a defining title in American cinema.

2007 Film Named Among the 'Most Book-Accurate' Film Adaptations
One of the most acclaimed films of all time, No Country For Old Men is not only praised for its cinematic excellence, but also for how well it used its source material.
The iconic 2007 film, directed by Ethan and Joel Coen, is based on the 2005 crime novel by renowned author Cormac McCarthy, and by many accounts, it is considered one of the best book-to-film adaptations of all time.
According to CBR, No Country For Old Men is among the top film adaptations of famous novels, earning it a spot on their list of 10 Book-Accurate Movies That Are Flawless From Start to Finish. The Coen brothers' masterpiece is ranked at No. 10 on the list, with the outlet reporting, "From the casting to the cinematography and editing, the movie perfectly captured the unsettling atmosphere of the book."
With a star-studded cast, No Country For Old Men features notable performances from Javier Bardem, JoshBrolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Kelly Macdonald, plus appearances from Tess Harper, Barry Corbin, Woody Harrelson and Garret Dillahunt. It's also no wonder the book translated so well from the page to the screen, as McCarthy initially wrote the story as a screenplay, before ultimately transitioning it into a novel.
View this post on InstagramNo Country For Old Men is ranked as the No. 8 top book-to-film adaptations by Just Watch, and it comes in at No. 6 on the ranking by Shortlist.
But even aside from its revered interpretation of McCarthy's novel, No Country For Old Men as a film itself is frequently ranked among the top-rated movies of all time. It's listed at No. 6 on the New York Times' Top 100 Films of the 21st Century, and is also included on Letterboxd's Top 500 Films of All Time (coming in at No. 148).
No Country For Old Men also racked up eight Academy Award nominations at the 2008 ceremony, with four wins in the categories for Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Bardem).
